Wisdom, wealth, and fame. But we human are …

 29 April 2012

The book of 1 Kings begins with a description of old king David who could not keep warm even under pile of blankets.  Even this king, who had fought off many nations and walked with God, got old. Recently, a movie was released which depicted the life of an Iron Lady, Margaret Thatcher, who was a strong leader of UK and of the world. I understand that even she is getting old and is spending a quiet life of retirement these days.

When a head of a nation gets old and can no longer perform the duty, the next inevitable question is that of a successor. David had more than 20 sons (1 Chronicles 3:1-9). Chapter 1 of the 1 Kings records that the fourth son of David, namely Adonijah held a coronation feast without permission from David. But, it also says, that David ordered Nathan the prophet and Zadok to take Solomon to the Spring of Gihon and anoint him king over Israel (1 Kings Chapter 1).

This Spring of Gihon exists even today in the town of David in Jerusalem and plenty of water flows out of it now. Last year, I visited this spring which is located at the foot of deep descent from the ground. I still remember that the Jewish guide blew a ram’s horn and shouted out “Long live King Solomon” in Hebrew. These stories we are studying are not fictions but are real historical events. Today, let us look at the reign of Solomon.

When Solomon succeeded the king, he followed the decrees of father David. What were these decrees? These were packed with King David’s wisdom and were like a will David was handing to Solomon. Namely,

1When the time drew near for David to die, he gave a charge to Solomon his son.2“I am about to go the way of all the earth,” he said. “So be strong, show yourself a man, 3and observe what the LORD your God requires: Walk in his ways, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and requirements, as written in the Law of Moses, so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go, 4and that the LORD may keep his promise to me: ‘If your descendants watch how they live, and if they walk faithfully before me with all their heart and soul, you will never fail to have a man on the throne of Israel.’ (1 Kings 2:1-4)

Last week, I pointed out that the only difference between King Saul and King David was whether or not he “obeyed God”. These words David spoke to his son Solomon urged him to “listen to God and obey Him.” If Solomon listens to God’s teaching and walk in God’s way, Solomon and Israel would prosper, and the descendants would also be blesses. This was what David had learned from his life experience.

So, Solomon tried to listen to his father at the beginning. And after Solomon was anointed, God asked Solomon one night in his dream:  “Ask for whatever you want me to give you.” (1 Kings 3:5)

If we were told by God this way, how would we respond? Do we ask: “Please get rid of the house and car loans”? Do we ask for healing of our physical pain? King Solomon responded in this way: 7“Now, O LORD my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. 8Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number. 9So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?” (1 Kings 3:7-9)

Solomon was young at this time. He could have asked for the strongest army of the world or for physical power over and above everyone else. But, Solomon asked for a discerning heart to govern the people and to distinguish between right and wrong. This response of Solomon shows that Solomon was true to what David said, namely to obey God.

God liked what Solomon asked for. 11So God said to him, “Since you have asked for this and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment in administering justice, 12I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be. 13Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for—both riches and honor—so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings. 14And if you walk in my ways and obey my statutes and commands as David your father did, I will give you a long life.” (1 Kings 3:11-14)

People often talk about investment. Perhaps many of you have investments. When we hear the word investment, we immediately think about monetary investment. Such investment might bring some profit in future. Such investment is visible and tangible. But, what you can see and touch can also be lost in the future.

But, investment is not limited to monetary investment. Some type of investment can be stored within us. One example is the wisdom God had granted to Solomon. Such wisdom is not tangible. But it is always with us and no one can take it away from us and can never be lost. God granted such wisdom to Solomon, and Solomon used this God-given wisdom when he governed and lead the nation of Israel. And, in this case, God also granted him with wealth and fame, which Solomon did not specifically ask for but God gave him anyway.

What a wonderful beginning of his governance!! Solomon’s wisdom was immeasurable. The words about his wisdom spread to foreign countries. He expanded trade with other nations and developed the economy. The wealth was considered to be 10 times more of the days of King David. Many kings and envoys came to Israel seeking diplomatic relationship with Israel. Queen of Ethiopia was one of them. When she saw the glory and wisdom of Solomon, she praised him.

Solomon deployed ministers to govern the nation, deployed district officers to each district to collect tax, protected national boundary and key posts, and also set up system of information gathering from each district. So, the nation was protected from outside threat and peace was brought to all regions of the nation. (1 Kings 4:24). It is amazing that such a well-governed nation existed 3000 years ago. This was the result of the wisdom God had granted Solomon.

But, there were problems in this seemingly prosperous nation. Namely, in order to support the wealth of the nation, people were asked to pay heavy tax and to provide forced labor. These tax and labor were used, for example, to build the temple in Jerusalem which took 7 years, and to build Solomon’s own palace which took additional 13 long years. These were constructed with the most advanced technology of the time, and a vast amount of fund had to be poured into such projects.

Further, government officials had to be paid, and importing goods from foreign countries also drained money. Imported goods included not only gold, silver, and ivory, but also exotic creatures such as monkey and peacocks. These were luxury items for Solomon’s personal pleasure. To pay for these, people were forced to provide hard labor. While the nation prospered, the financial debt ballooned, and the gap between the rich and poor widened.

Today, we know that there are many nations suffering from financial burdens they cannot pay for. Financial hardship exists even in USA and Japan. And, we hear that the wealth gap among the people of the nation is widening. Do you remember when the people of Israel demanded Samuel for a king? Do you remember how God warned the people about the consequence of such kingdom? Such problems God had warned were coming to reality in Israel.

The biggest problem was, however, that Solomon had used political alliance with other nations through marriage. These wives brought numerous gods from their home nations, and many places of worship for these foreign gods were built in many parts of Israel. We are amazed to hear that Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines. Many of these women brought their own pagan religion with them (1 Kings Chapter 11). That is why the Bible says that Solomon’s heart was not fully devoted to the LORD as his father’s heart. (1 Kings 11:4) This angered the Lord. Stability and peace was lost from Israel, and only confusion filled the nation (1 Kings 11:9-13)

Just like Saul we studied last week, Solomon was blessed by God at the beginning. Solomon was granted with extraordinary wisdom from God. But, the wisdom had to be used by Solomon, the human. When Solomon started his reign, his top priority was to listen to God and to be faithful to God. But, soon, his reign was no longer centered on God, and it was centered on Solomon himself.

As a result, although Rehoboam, the son of Solomon succeeded as the king after the death of Solomon, Israel would break up into South and North in 922 B.C. These problems were brewing during the reign of Solomon, but exploded into reality after his death.

The book of Kings also talks about the period of around 400 years in which the nation was divided into the south kingdom Judah and north kingdom of Israel. During this period, there were 20 kings in Judah, while there were 19 kings in Israel. Of the 20 kings of Judah, 8 of them were good, namely they feared and honored God. Others were bad kings who did not obey God. Of 19 kings of Israel, all of 19 were considered to be bad kings. As you can see from this, the history of Israel in this period was the time away from God.

During this God-less period, God sent many prophets such as Elijah, Elisha, Jonah, Amos, Hosea, Isaiah, Micah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel to the divided nation of Israel. These prophets conveyed words from God with tears, risking their lives, pointing out sins of the Israel, and tried to let people recall how God cared about them.

During this last three weeks, we have covered Eri, Samuel, Saul, David, and Solomon. Within this short period, we have glanced over many of the key characters in the Bible. But, by taking such a quick and sweeping view of these people, we have learned a very important lesson.

And that is, these people are people of flesh and blood just like us. High Priest Eri and Prophet Samuel were admired outside and have done great deeds. But, they could not control their own household and rebellious children.

Saul who was anointed by God under great expectation. He could have ruled the Israel as the first king if only he had listened to God. But, he could not do so and ended up spending his life filled with jealousy and anger.

King David was born as a shepherd in a remote village of Bethlehem, but was anointed by God, and became the highest king in the history of Israel. His life was centered on God. He made some mistakes, but repented fully in front of God.

King Solomon was given the greatest wealth and honor in the history of Israel, but was overtaken by his own self-centered greed for wealth, and eventually permitted foreign wives to bring in foreign gods into the nation of Israel.

All of these characters are so human. We can share their sentiments they felt in the palace, home, and at the battle field. These people, whether a high priest, a prophet, or a king anointed by God, were unstable, capricious, controlled by self-interests and temptation. And God was there all the time dealing with these characters. This is a history of human weakness. This book of Kings describes such human struggle for power on and on.

But, we must remember that God was with Israel all these times. When we read such story in the Bible, we might change our view of the Bible. We are amazed and saddened by the ugly side of the human, and are overwhelmed by the compassion of the God. We make blunders all the time, God has granted us blessing. But, we take the blessing and turn them into disastrous consequence. But, nevertheless, God still loves us, weak human being. Such God is beyond our understanding.

And after 1000 years of such dark ages after Solomon, Jesus Christ was born in this world of ours. 1000 years is a long time. But, God was patient, and had never abandoned Israel throughout its dark periods.

And, Jesus Christ, born of human to this world, would die on the cross for us weak human beings to redeem us from our sins. When we study this relationship between God and human through the Bible, we sometimes wonder why God is so patient with us. When we see the unchanging love of God, we cannot simply feel grateful. No, we sometimes feel like asking God “Why? Why do you love us so much?”

God might look even foolish doing so. But, this was God’s intension from the beginning. Paul explains why in 1 Corinthians Chapter 1 Verse 21: God was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who believe. (1 Corinthians 1:21)

If I say that there are different levels of love, some of you might misunderstand me.

Love could range from “You are important”, “I like you”, to “I would do anything for you.” And when the love is at its highest level, people might do something for which other people might question, “Why do you go to that length?” And such deeds of love might look even foolish and beyond common sentiment.

But, love of God is something that looks foolish at times. Israel was beyond control and beyond salvation. But, God did not give up or give in and continued to pour compassion and love to them. And, this God also has sent Jesus Christ to save despicable us human and sacrificed the life of Jesus for us. This behavior of God is insane and even looks foolish. But, that is the love of God.

Our world situation or state of our nation is not too different from that of Israel some 3000 years ago. We are imperfect; repeating the same old mistakes; and are controlled by greed. Our behavior and what we harbor in our hearts are not something we are proud of. We are still being controlled by the dark side as these people in the history. But, God understands and embraces us, and loves us nevertheless. If there is hope in this world, it is the love of God and nothing else.

 Let us pray.
