We thank the Lord that we are able to have this Memorial Day Picnic after 3 years. We have been praying for this day to come again, and today it has come true. Some of you may have not come to worship in a while. Some of you may be here for the first time. We wholeheartedly welcome you.<\/p>\n
Today we will share a meal together after the service, and some of you may have your stomachs growling from the smell of BBQ. There are fun games prepared for the kids as well. If we can reserve a field, we will also enjoy playing softball. Please have a relaxing and good time today.<\/p>\n
We will celebrate Memorial Day tomorrow. In Japanese, this day is called \u201cMemorial Day for Fallen Soldiers\u201d. Jesus Christ once said, \u201cGreater love has no one than this: to lay down one\u2019s life for one\u2019s friends.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\nLet this be a day of heartfelt prayers for those who have given their lives to preserve freedom and peace, and for those who have lost their families. At the same time, we remember our family and friends who have already gone to be with the Lord. \u00a0So, today is a memorial day to remember our memories with them.Whenever I think of \u201cmemories,\u201d I am always reminded of one in particular.<\/p>\n
When my mother was 18 years old, there was a young man who came to deliver newspapers to her. The young man was named Teruo Takagi, who later became a pastor, and he evangelized my mother while delivering newspapers. Through this Pastor Takagi, my mother became a Christian.<\/p>\n
Unable to contain her joy of being saved by the cross of the Lord, she enrolled in seminary to become a pastor six months later, something I don’t think would be possible now. Upon entering seminary, she noticed that her Bible was thinner than those of other students. She entered the seminary not knowing that the Bible had an Old Testament.<\/p>\n
Since then, she was a pastor for more than half a century, and she who once entered the seminary without knowing the Old Testament, in her later years, became the dormitory dean of that same seminary.<\/p>\n
What God does is far beyond our thoughts.<\/p>\n
Both Pastor Takagi and my mother are no longer in this world. They are now with the Lord. In his later years, Pastor Takagi became frail and spent every day in a hospital room. At the same time, my mother also became ill and was hospitalized for a long time.<\/p>\n
One day, my mother had to leave the hospital where she had been hospitalized, and the hospital that was assigned to her was the same hospital where Pastor Takagi had been hospitalized. To our surprise, she was put in a hospital room two doors down from his.<\/p>\n
Every day, Pastor Takagi, the teacher who led my mother to Christ 60 years before that time, would come to the sickbed of his student to lay his hands on her and pray.<\/p>\n
I do not know how many thousands of hospitals there are in Tokyo. What God does is always filled with grace and mercy.<\/p>\n
Pastor Takagi was in the hospital for years (something that would never happen in the U.S.). \u00a0He used to say:<\/p>\n
\u201cIn my hospital bed, I ruminate on all the happy memories of the past. So, I hope all of you will make lots of happy memories while you can now.\u201d<\/p>\n
What he said connects with what is said in Psalm 63.5\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><\/strong>I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods;<\/em><\/strong> with singing lips my mouth will praise you.<\/em><\/strong> 6\u00a0<\/sup>On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night. (Psalm 63:5, 6).<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\nThe Bible can be called a history book. It describes the history of the Israelites, and in the Gospels, the words and deeds of Jesus Christ are recorded. However, could we not call it this way? It is also a \u201cbook of memory\u201d of the authors who wrote it.<\/p>\n
Moses and David wrote about their days, Matthew and John wrote about their memories of Jesus Christ, and each time they recalled them, they received heavenly strength, comfort, and hope.<\/p>\n
On the night of Jesus\u2019 crucifixion, He gathered His disciples together and had a meal. At that time, the Lord said, \u201cDo this in remembrance of me.\u201d<\/em><\/strong> Later in life, they gained courage by recalling their memories of that evening with Jesus, and they lived powerfully in the love of the Lord.<\/p>\nThey always had memories of this Jesus in their lives, as well as of their ancestors and God. And it was those memories that gave them strength and hope for each day.<\/p>\n
We, too, inherit their memories of God and Jesus Christ, from which we receive strength and hope to live each day.<\/p>\n
Dear people in the Lord, do you have a sweet memory with the Lord? Dear people in the Lord, there is power in \u201cmemories\u201d!<\/p>\n
Everyone has an album in their heart. What memories do you have in your heart album?<\/p>\n
Do you have memories with your parents? Do you have memories as a married couple? Do you have memories with your children or grandchildren?<\/p>\n
The things we acquire will one day become old. They become useless. It will be lost. However, the memories here (in our hearts) are not lost and will continue to be in our hearts.<\/p>\n
I cannot take anything with me to heaven, but I believe I can bring just these memories with me to heaven. Do you, like Pastor Takagi, have pleasant memories that you can recall when you are on your sickbed? Do you have memories with your church brothers and sisters? Psalm 42 describes memories with those gathered in the temple of God.<\/p>\n
These things I remember<\/em><\/strong> as I pour out my soul: how I used to go to the house of God under the protection of the Mighty One with shouts of joy\u00a0and praise\u00a0among the festive throng.<\/em><\/strong> (Psalm 42:4)<\/strong><\/p>\nNow, when we close our eyes, we remember Frank Ogura and James Yamate smiling as they used to go from one table to the next in this place.I recall Michiko Dunn happily chatting with Tad Hayashi.<\/p>\n
These are treasures that will never be lost from my heart. What they left behind is my treasure that will never decay.Do you have such treasures in your hearts?<\/p>\n

One day, I received a call from Hideko Smith, who is now with the Lord. \u201cSensei, come on, let\u2019s go fishing. Sugisawa-san says she wants to go too.\u201d At the time, Hideko-san was over 70 years old and Sugisawa-san was over 80.<\/p>\n
What reason would I have to refuse? Of course, nothing at all!<\/p>\n
We took the boat out for a half day of fishing. We ate rice balls on the boat, and while rocking back and forth, we caught fish, and had a lot of fun.<\/p>\n
It is a story of sailing with two women, a story that could have caused a pastoral scandal, but my wife was happy to send me off because it was my time with my mothers in America.<\/p>\n
I will take these memories with me to heaven, and someday I hope to share this story with the two of them over there.<\/p>\n
The list of these kinds of memories is endless. When I recall such memories, I think how blessed I am. It is a wonderful life.<\/p>\n
I am now 53 years old. I am now in the latter half of my life. According to the average life expectancy, I have 30 years left to live.<\/p>\n
However, the other day, I came to a shocking realization. If we humans spend a third of our day sleeping, I have only 20 years left to actually be awake, see your faces, and hear your voices.<\/p>\n
When you think about that, how much time do you have left? These are the years when one is kept alive under the best of circumstances; in reality, there may be even fewer years left. Dear people in the Lord, what should we be mindful of during this time left to us?<\/p>\n
My heart is crushed when I think of what happened last week at an elementary school in Texas. In the past, when I dropped my children off at school, I always prayed, \u201cMay I be able to sit around the dining table with them this evening.\u201dThis situation is abnormal. I am not dropping off my children on the battlefield.<\/p>\n
We live in an abnormal world where we do not know when we will lose our own lives. Dear people in the Lord, have you hugged your loved ones lately? Are you expressing how happy you are to be with a person?<\/p>\n
Are you in their albums? Is your smile there?<\/p>\n
A life in which we do not know what will happen tomorrow. A limited life. There is not much for us to do in the midst of it.<\/p>\n
A lifetime of loving them and being loved by them, and having as many memories of them as possible in our hearts. If we can create one or more such memories that will put us in a corner of their memories and make those who remember us smile, what more can we ask for in this life?<\/p>\n
I sincerely hope that the Lord is speaking to us this morning about what is most important in our lives. Having been a pastor long enough, I know what you all want from a message under such a blue sky with the smell of BBQ in the air.<\/p>\n
Yes, \u201cPastor, a short sermon!\u201d Right? Don\u2019t worry, we are almost done.<\/p>\n
Because, today is the day that will add a page to your memories in your hearts of the first church picnic in three years.<\/p>\n
We will have lunch together later today. To eat together is what the Lord Jesus Christ loved most. The children will likely enjoy the games to the fullest. They have been in their rooms wearing masks for the past two and a half years, so they should have a great time today.There is also softball. I have been picturing Machado\u2019s batting form in my head since last night.<\/p>\n
Brothers and sisters in the Lord, let us have a lot of fun today. This day is a treasure to be shared in the album of our hearts.<\/p>\n
Love your family, love your friends, make many good memories with them and diligently store them in your heart album.<\/p>\n
Those memories can be pulled from our hearts anytime and anywhere, and they will always give us strength and hope when we have to walk through the rough patches in our lives in the future.<\/p>\n
Post Covid-19, our church will enter a new chapter.<\/p>\n
In Hebrews it says, \u201cAnd by faith Abel still speaks, even though he is dead.\u201d<\/em> (Hebrews 11:4)<\/strong><\/p>\nThe joyous seniors in the faith in the album of our hearts speak to us. \u201cPlease take care of SDJCC.”<\/p>\n
May this church be filled with smiles in the Lord. And may hope shine brightly.Just as our brothers and sisters who have left us so many memories, may we also leave good things behind in this church. May your smile be added to my album. May my smile be added to your album.<\/p>\n
