Church Pleasing to God (5): Faithfully Proclaims God\u2019s Truth<br \/>\nSDJCC Sunday Worship Service<br \/>\nJuly 3, 2022<\/p>\n<p>Happy Fourth of July Weekend!\u00a0 Because July 4<sup>th<\/sup> is on a Monday this year, many of you get an extended weekend.<\/p>\n<p>When we think of July 4<sup>th<\/sup>, of course in this country we think of independence, and historically we remember it as the day in which the Declaration of Independence was signed by the founding leaders of this nation.<\/p>\n<p>History is an interesting thing. Depending upon the time in which you live, history goes through revisions. Growing up in this country, and having taken U.S. history in high school, I looked upon the signers of the Declaration of Independence as people of courage. \u3053<\/p>\n<p>As an adult, I also heard of the faith of these courageous people, and although many of them were deists, there were some who had solid Christian faith. However, more recently, I have found out that some of the founding leaders of this nation, 9 of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence to be exact, were freemasons.<\/p>\n<p>Freemasons believe in what is called the Great Architect of the Universe, and also believe that you will go to heaven as a result of good works, thus denying the need for Jesus\u2019 death as the payment of mankind\u2019s sins.<\/p>\n<p>If the Declaration of Independence was truly influenced by faith in Christ, then it probably would have read: \u201cWe hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Holiness,\u201d instead of \u201cHappiness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Happiness is subjective and very self-centered.\u00a0 Holiness is found in God alone and is Christ-centered.The ideology of freemasons is deeply ingrained in the Declaration of Independence itself, and its influence can also be seen in the design and layout of Washington D.C. as well.<\/p>\n<p>Because of time, I will not go into this today, but I encourage you to look into it yourself.<\/p>\n<p>However, what I can say is that a country that I thought was a Christian nation seems to be just an illusion. Actually, it is wrong for us to deem a country to be Christian, unless its leadership and citizens have faith in Jesus Christ and serve Him as the Lord of their lives.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, when thinking about a nation\u2019s identity, one must think about its history,<\/p>\n<p>particularly its founding leadership and what they believe and value.At the same time, in thinking about history and how it goes through revisions, I am challenged to wonder about the reliability and truthfulness of this country\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p>As Christians, we are reminded that history is ultimately about HIStory: God\u2019s story. And God\u2019s story is recorded for us in the Bible. The Bible is not just a religious and spiritual book.It is also a historical book, and thankfully it has not gone through revisions. Bible history is true and has survived the test of time.<\/p>\n<p>For, \u201cAll people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord endures forever.\u201d And this is the word that was preached to you. (1 Peter 1:24-25)<\/p>\n<p>Everything in the Bible is true, and therefore we continually and faithfully proclaim it. It is true that God created the whole universe, and we were created in His image (Genesis 1).<\/p>\n<p>It is true that we suffer and die as a result of Adam\u2019s sin (Genesis 3; Romans 15:21-22)\u3000It is true that God judged the whole world through a worldwide flood (Genesis 6-8).<\/p>\n<p>It is true that God saved Noah and his family preserving them along with specific animals on an ark (Genesis 6-8). It is true that God confused the languages of people at the Tower of Babel (Genesis 11).<\/p>\n<p>It is true that God chose Abraham and blessed him, so that through his future decedent the whole world would be blessed (Genesis 12:1-3; 15:1-6).It is true that God chose Jacob to become the father of the people of Israel, a chosen people through which He may display His glory and teach His will (Genesis 35:9-15).<\/p>\n<p>It is true that God chose Joseph to preserve the people of Israel by making him a leader of Egypt during a time of great famine (Genesis 41; 50:15-21).<\/p>\n<p>It is true that God chose Moses to lead the people of Israel out of Egypt where they were treated as slaves (Exodus 3).<\/p>\n<p>It is true that God gave the people of Israel the ten commandments and the Law, along with the sacrificial system of worshiping God and seeking forgiveness for their sins (Exodus 20).<\/p>\n<p>It is true that God chose David through whom He would establish an everlasting kingdom, and in the future the promised Messiah would come (2 Samuel 7).<\/p>\n<p>It is true that in God\u2019s appointed time, He sent His only begotten Son, Jesus the Christ, to live in complete obedience according to His will, and ultimately to die on a cross to pay for the wages of our sins (Romans 5:6).<\/p>\n<p>It is true that God raised Jesus from the dead on the third day after His death (Matthew 28:1-10; Mark 16:1-8; Luke 24:1-12; John 20:1-10; 1 Corinthians 15:3-4). It is true that after Jesus\u2019 resurrection, He showed Himself to His disciples, spent time with them and instructed them concerning the future (Luke 24:1-44; John 20-21).<\/p>\n<p>It is true that just before Jesus\u2019 ascension back to heaven, He instructed His disciples to stay in Jerusalem and to wait for the promised Holy Spirit (Luke 24:45-53; Acts 1:1-11).<\/p>\n<p>It is true that on the Day of Pentecost, God poured out the Holy Spirit upon Jesus\u2019 disciples (Acts 2:1-4). Some of these very things were declared by Peter on the Day of Pentecost under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n<p>It is a little long, but I will read Acts 2:14-36.<\/p>\n<p><sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: \u201cFellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. <sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It\u2019s only nine in the morning!\u00a0<sup>16\u00a0<\/sup>No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:<sup> 15<\/sup><\/p>\n<p><sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>\u201c\u2018In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.<sup> 1718\u00a0<\/sup>Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.<sup> 1819\u00a0<\/sup>I will show wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke.<sup> 20\u00a0<\/sup>The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.<sup> 21\u00a0<\/sup>And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord\u00a0will be saved.\u2019<sup>22\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cFellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth\u00a0was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs,\u00a0which God did among you through him,\u00a0as you yourselves know. <sup>23\u00a0<\/sup>This man was handed over to you by God\u2019s deliberate plan and foreknowledge;\u00a0and you, with the help of wicked men,\u00a0put him to death by nailing him to the cross.<sup> 24\u00a0<\/sup>But God raised him from the dead,\u00a0freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.\u00a0 <sup>25\u00a0<\/sup>David said about him: \u201c\u2018I saw the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.<sup> 26\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest in hope, \u00a0<sup>27\u00a0<\/sup>because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, you will not let your holy one see decay.<sup> 28\u00a0<\/sup>You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.\u2019 <sup>29\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cFellow Israelites,\u00a0I can tell you confidently that the patriarch\u00a0David died and was buried,\u00a0and his tomb is here\u00a0to this day.<sup>30\u00a0<\/sup>But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne. <sup>31\u00a0<\/sup>Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay.<sup> 32\u00a0<\/sup>God has raised this Jesus to life,\u00a0and we are all witnesses\u00a0of it.<sup>33\u00a0<\/sup>Exalted\u00a0to the right hand of God,\u00a0he has received from the Father\u00a0the promised Holy Spirit\u00a0and has poured out\u00a0what you now see and hear. <sup>34\u00a0<\/sup>For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said, \u201c\u2018The Lord said to my Lord: \u201cSit at my right hand <sup>35\u00a0<\/sup>until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.\u201d\u2019<sup>36\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cTherefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord\u00a0and Messiah.\u201d (Acts 2:14-36)<\/p>\n<p>The fact that Peter under the influence of the Holy Spirit referred to Old Testament Scripture in telling the story of God, that is HIStory, is proof in the reliability and truth of the Old Testament Scriptures.<\/p>\n<p>There is reference to the prophecy and promise of the Holy Spirit written about in the book of Joel. There is reference to Psalm 16, and how God through David spoke about the future resurrection of the Christ.<\/p>\n<p>There is reference to Psalm 110, and how God through David spoke about the divinity of the Christ. Through this message, Peter made it clear that it was the work of God through Jesus Christ who was crucified and yet God rose from the dead by which he and the disciples had received the Holy Spirt and spoke in various languages.He finished his message by saying,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTherefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord\u00a0and Messiah.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peter declared that Jesus is both Lord and Messiah. He is the Son of God, and thus Lord over all, and the Messiah, the Anointed One of God. We see the response of the people to this message.\u00a0 It says:<\/p>\n<p>When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, \u201cBrothers, what shall we do?\u201d (Acts 2:37)<\/p>\n<p>In response to their question:<\/p>\n<p><sup>38\u00a0<\/sup>Peter replied, \u201cRepent and be baptized,\u00a0every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.\u00a0<sup>3<\/sup>And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.<sup>39\u00a0<\/sup>The promise is for you and your children\u00a0and for all who are far off\u2014for all whom the Lord our God will call.\u201d (Acts 2:38-39)<\/p>\n<p>And this message is true for us today.<\/p>\n<p>If we recognize that Jesus is the Son of God, and thus Lord over all, and that He is the Messiah, God\u2019s Anointed One, sent by God to die for our sins and rose from the dead,\u3000then we too are to respond by repenting and being baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n<p>To repent means to change the way we think.\u00a0 It means to turn away from our wrong views of God and wrong way of living, and turn to Him and align our life in accordance with what is right before Him.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, within the context of Peter\u2019s message, to repent meant to turn their thinking around from considering Jesus as worthy of crucifixion to embracing Him as Lord and Messiah. Repentance describes what coming to God is.<\/p>\n<p>You cannot turn towards God without turning away from the things He is against. To be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ means to put our complete trust in Jesus as our Savior and Lord.<\/p>\n<p>When we do so, we are promised that we will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. This promise is for those who heard the message nearly 2000 years ago on the Day of Pentecost, and also for their children and we who are far off.<\/p>\n<p>It is a promise given for all whom the Lord our God will call. Indeed, the gift of the Holy Spirit is given to all who will heed God\u2019s call to repent and put their faith in Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord.<\/p>\n<p>We are reminded here that it is in the name of Jesus Christ through whom we receive the forgiveness of our sins. This is undeniable truth which is part of HIStory!<\/p>\n<p>Jesus before He went to the cross said the following to those who had believed Him:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you hold to my teaching,\u00a0you are really my disciples. \u00a0<sup>32\u00a0<\/sup>Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. . . . Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin.<sup> 35\u00a0<\/sup>Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.\u00a0<sup>36\u00a0<\/sup>So if the Son sets you free,\u00a0you will be free indeed.\u201d (John 8:31-32, 34-36)<\/p>\n<p>One of the first things we need to understand about true history is that it points to the fact that mankind is riddled with sin. And because it is riddled with sin, and because we are all slaves to sin, we need a Savior to deliver us from such a state.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus promises here that He as the Son of God is the One who can set us free. Do you want to align yourself with a history you can trust, a history that does not go through revision? Do you want to be set free from the bondage of sin and death? Do you want to experience true freedom and independence from the bondage of sin and death?<\/p>\n<p>Then, let us listen to the truth given to us in the Bible. When we do, we will be led to Jesus Christ, the Son of God, through whom we can experience true freedom.<\/p>\n<p>This is how Paul described this true freedom found in Jesus in Romans 8.<\/p>\n<p><sup>1 <\/sup>Therefore, there is now no condemnation\u00a0for those who are in Christ Jesus,<sup> 1<\/sup>\u00a0<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>because through Christ Jesus\u00a0the law of the Spirit who gives life\u00a0has set you\u00a0free\u00a0from the law of sin\u00a0and death.<sup> 3\u00a0<\/sup>For what the law was powerless\u00a0to do because it was weakened by the flesh,\u00a0God did by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh\u00a0to be a sin offering.<\/p>\n<p>And so he condemned sin in the flesh,<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>in order that the righteous requirement\u00a0of the law might be fully met in us, who do not live according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. <sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>But if Christ is in you,\u00a0then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life\u00a0because of righteousness.<sup> 11\u00a0<\/sup>And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead\u00a0is living in you,he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies\u00a0because of\u00a0his Spirit who lives in you. <sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>For those who are led by the Spirit of God\u00a0are the children of God.<sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>The Spirit\u00a0you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; \u00a0rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.\u00a0And by him we cry,\u00a0\u201cAbba,\u00a0Father.\u201d<sup>16\u00a0<\/sup>The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit\u00a0that we are God\u2019s children.<sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>Now if we are children, then we are heirs\u2014heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings\u00a0in order that we may also share in his glory.<\/p>\n<p>True freedom in Christ brings us into a right relationship with God, where we are assured of being children of God through the work of the Holy Spirit given to us. On the Day of Pentecost, when people heard the truth of God, they were moved to repentance and to put their trust in Jesus.They then received the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\n<p>Last Sunday, Pastor Okura mentioned that the Holy Spirit is poured out on those who are brokenhearted. He also shared that:<\/p>\n<p>There are many enlightening books in the world. I sometimes look through them. I sometimes take them to heart. However, lately, I have been thinking a lot. Rather than what I get from these 100 enlightening books, to be filled with the Holy Spirit, to bear the fruit of the Spirit, which is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, is far more important for me.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, we can learn many things through studying 100 enlightening books.<\/p>\n<p>However, there is only one book that we can truly claim as proclaiming God\u2019s truth. It is the Bible, the word of God, and it is in the Bible that we learn of the Holy Spirit and the blessing of receiving the Holy Spirit in our lives.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, we share the truth of God that leads to repentance based on the conviction of the Holy Spirit. We share the truth of God that leads people to look to Jesus, the Son of God, in faith.<\/p>\n<p>We share the truth of God that those who do so will receive the Holy Spirit by which they will know for certainty of their relationship to God as His children.<\/p>\n<p>God wants us to faithfully proclaim His truth. Thus, a church that pleases God faithfully proclaims God\u2019s truth. We are told concerning God\u2019s word:<\/p>\n<p><sup>16 <\/sup>All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,<sup>17 <\/sup>so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)<sup>16 <\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Thus, we must faithfully proclaim the whole of God\u2019s word, and not just bits and pieces of it. The Church of Christ has been faithfully proclaiming God\u2019s truth for 2000 years, and we as the San Diego Japanese Christian Church has faithfully proclaimed God\u2019s truth for these 92 years.<\/p>\n<p>This is something that we must continue to do, in good times and bad times, even as the world changes and the history taught in schools and books go through revisions.<\/p>\n<p>God\u2019s word does not change.
