A Church Pleasing to God (11): Participates Together in Missionary Work<\/strong>

Last Sunday, Pastor Okura talked about the fact that \u201cA Healthy Body Grows by Itself\u201d. \u00a0Indeed, we as a church family, are to function as the body of Christ. \u00a0And, as a physical body has many parts that work together to keep the body alive and well, the body of Christ has many parts, that is each of us, with different roles and responsibilities within that body. \u00a0The apostle Paul wrote about this to the Ephesians church:<\/p>\n

From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows\u00a0and builds itself up\u00a0in love,\u00a0as each part does its work. (Ephesians 4:16)<\/strong><\/p>\n

When each part does its work, when everyone lovingly ministers using the gifts given to them by God for the building up of the body of Christ, it will grow together and mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. \u00a0To that end, the Bible teaches us:<\/p>\n

11 <\/sup><\/strong>So Christ himself gave\u00a0the apostles,\u00a0the prophets,\u00a0the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 <\/sup>to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ\u00a0may be built up 13 <\/sup>until we all reach unity\u00a0in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God\u00a0and become mature,\u00a0attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. (Ephesians 4:11-13)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Here it says that Christ Jesus gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip the people that make up the body of Christ for works of service. \u00a0Last Sunday, Pastor Okura talked about the ministry of a pastor in regard to this, and the goal for such equipping for works of service was for the body of Christ to be built up to reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God. \u00a0This morning, I want to focus on the work of a missionary and the body of Christ\u2019s participation together in missionary work.<\/p>\n

Missionaries are sent out by a church to share the Gospel and minister to people in a place other than where the church is located. \u00a0Though usually missionaries are sent to a country other than their own, they can be sent to a specific community to minister in.<\/p>\n

Jesus gave the apostles, who were sent directly by Him to establish churches. \u00a0\u201cApostle\u201d means someone sent as an authoritative delegate. \u00a0Twelve men plus Paul were official apostles who had seen the risen Christ and had received personal appointment from Him. \u00a0The first century apostles were given to establish a foundation for the Church. \u00a0Since the word\u00a0apostolos<\/em>\u00a0also describes any servant who is sent by his master on any mission, \u201cmissionary\u201d is a modern equivalent term.<\/p>\n

Jesus gave the prophets to proclaim His message.\u00a0 New Testament prophets provided edification, exhortation, and comfort to the church. \u00a0Jesus gave the evangelists to share the Gospel.\u00a0 Such evangelists preached the gospel both at home and abroad. \u00a0Jesus gave the pastors and teachers to nurture and care for the flock through the instruction and teaching of the word of God.<\/p>\n

In general, the \u201capostles, prophets, evangelists\u201d linked church to church and served the entire body; the \u201cpastors and teachers\u201d had charge of local and congregational affairs.\u00a0 Each of these people are called by God to serve according to their giftings.<\/p>\n

The manner in which Barnabas and Paul were sent out as missionaries is recorded for us in Acts 13:1-3.<\/p>\n

1\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>Now in the church at Antioch\u00a0there were prophets\u00a0and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene,\u00a0Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod\u00a0the tetrarch) and Saul.\u00a02\u00a0<\/sup>While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said,\u00a0\u201cSet apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work\u00a0to which I have called them.\u201d\u00a03\u00a0<\/sup>So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them\u00a0and sent them off. (Acts 13:1-3)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Here we see how Barnabas and Saul (Paul) were called and set apart by God for missionary work, and were then prayerfully sent out from the church at Antioch. \u00a0Prayer should proceed the sending out of missionaries, but prayer should also continue to accompany the work of missionaries. \u00a0Thus, Paul exhorted the Ephesian church to pray for him as a missionary.<\/p>\n

18\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>And pray in the Spirit\u00a0on all occasions\u00a0with all kinds of prayers and requests.\u00a0With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying\u00a0for all the Lord\u2019s people.\u00a019\u00a0<\/sup>Pray also for me,\u00a0that whenever I speak, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly\u00a0make known the mystery\u00a0of the gospel,\u00a020\u00a0<\/sup>for which I am an ambassador\u00a0in chains.\u00a0Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should. (Ephesians 6:18-20)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Not only should missionaries be supported through prayer, but they should also be supported financially.\u00a0 We read of this in Paul\u2019s letter to the Philippians.<\/p>\n

15\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>Moreover, as you Philippians know, in the early days\u00a0of your acquaintance with the gospel, when I set out from Macedonia,\u00a0not one church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving, except you only;\u00a016\u00a0<\/sup>for even when I was in Thessalonica,\u00a0you sent me aid more than once when I was in need.\u00a017\u00a0<\/sup>Not that I desire your gifts; what I desire is that more be credited to your account.\u00a018\u00a0<\/sup>I have received full payment and have more than enough. I am amply supplied, now that I have received from Epaphroditus\u00a0the gifts you sent. They are a fragrant\u00a0offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God.\u00a0(Philippians 4:15-18)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Here Paul commends the Philippians for their gift giving in support of his missionary work. \u00a0He also reminds them that their giving is to their credit, meaning it is actually a blessing for them to participate in Paul\u2019s missionary work through their giving. \u00a0Paul calls their gift: A fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God.<\/p>\n

Paul also mentions Epaphroditus who was sent to him by the Philippians church to deliver the gifts given for the missionary work.\u00a0 This is what Paul wrote about Epaphroditus earlier on in this letter:<\/p>\n

25\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>But I think it is necessary to send back to you Epaphroditus, my brother, co-worker\u00a0and fellow soldier,\u00a0who is also your messenger, whom you sent to take care of my needs. . . .\u00a029\u00a0<\/sup>So then, welcome him in the Lord with great joy, and honor people like him,\u00a030\u00a0<\/sup>because he almost died for the work of Christ. He risked his life to make up for the help you yourselves could not give me. (Philippians 2:25, 29, 30)<\/strong><\/p>\n

We see that Epaphroditus was not just a delivery person but was of great help to Paul. \u00a0He actually became quite sick while with Paul, but continued to help Paul at great risk to his own life. \u00a0We are thus reminded here of the additional support that can be given to missionaries. \u00a0Mainly, to send people to provide help and encouragement to the missionary. \u00a0Thus, we would do well to think of ways to better support our missionaries, and one way would be to visit them.<\/p>\n

Another way would be to write letters and emails of encouragement to them. \u00a0Sometimes we are given the opportunity to send them care packages and ministry supplies to them as well. \u00a0Thus, there are many ways in which we can participate together in missionary work. \u00a0In these various ways, we work together with our missionaries, so that they can continue on with their work. \u00a0These means of supporting missionaries are also ways in which we can exercise our God given gifts, and thus support the greater body of Christ.<\/p>\n

4\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function,\u00a05\u00a0<\/sup>so in Christ we, though many, form one body,\u00a0and each member belongs to all the others.\u00a06\u00a0<\/sup>We have different gifts,\u00a0according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying,\u00a0then prophesy in accordance with your\u00a0faith;\u00a07\u00a0<\/sup>if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach;\u00a08\u00a0<\/sup>if it is to encourage, then give encouragement;\u00a0if it is giving, then give generously;\u00a0if it is to lead,\u00a0do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully. (Romans 12:4-8)<\/strong><\/p>\n

From the list of gifts mentioned in these verses, I want to highlight the gifts of encouragement and giving.<\/p>\n

if it is to encourage, then give encouragement;\u00a0if it is giving, then give generously;<\/strong><\/p>\n

These two particular gifts can be employed in participating in missionary work. \u00a0Encouragement of missionaries is essential in order for them to continue on with their work. \u00a0As mentioned already, missionaries can be encouraged by regularly writing to them, sending them things, and even visiting them. \u00a0Giving generously to missionaries is essential in order for them to continue on with their work.<\/p>\n

We as a church family have many people who are very generous in their giving. \u00a0This giving is not just given to missionary work, but also to the church as a whole. \u00a0I thank God for your generous giving!\u00a0 And because of your generous giving, we are able to support many missionaries as a church. \u00a0I point out these gifts also, to remind all of you that this too is a way of exercising a gift God has given to some of you.<\/p>\n

Not all of us are called to be missionaries, but all of us can participate together in missionary work through the exercise of our gifts in supporting them. \u00a0We are connected to missionaries as a part of the body of Christ. \u00a0And we are blessed to be able to be a part of the missionaries\u2019 work by supporting them.<\/p>\n

This morning, we are blessed to hear of how God has been at work through the Sue Family in Japan.\u00a0 After we hear their sharing, we will pray over them a prayer of blessing.<\/p>\n
