What will people think in their hearts when they reach the age of 75? Having accomplished most everything in their lives, many people may think about living the rest of their lives in peace and quiet. God speaks to Abram, who was 75 years old.<\/p>\n
Genesis 12:1-2. \u201cGo from your country, your people and your father\u2019s household\u00a0to the land\u00a0I will show you. 2\u00a0<\/sup>I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\nHe and his wife, Sarai, left the land they had grown accustomed to living in and set out for the promised land God had shown them.\u79c1From our series \u201cLearning from People, How to Live with God,\u201d every week we are learning from people in the Bible and seeing God\u2019s guidance in regard to this. So today I would like to learn first from human beings. Then I would like to look at the truth of God\u2019s presence with us. God says to Abram, who had no children.<\/p>\n
Genesis 12:7). \u201cTo your offspring\u00a0I will give this land.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\nThese words meant that they would be \u201cgiven a child\u201d. At that time, Abram was 75 years old and Sarai was 65. We think. It is impossible for them at that age to be given a child. But what if God, who creates something out of nothing, was involved in this?<\/p>\n
Suppose we believe this word of God\u2019s promise made to Abram. But still, we would think. \u201cThen, sooner the better!\u201d Because, humanly speaking, it\u2019s already too late for them at their age. However, the fulfillment of this promise will be 25 years from this time.<\/p>\n
Yes, that promise was fulfilled when Abram was 100 years old and Sarai was 90. As their bodies deteriorated more and more with each passing year, the years must have seemed incredibly long to them. They could no longer wait for God\u2019s promise, and they tried to do things on their own. The Bible, in Genesis, describes it this way.<\/p>\n
Genesis 16:1-4\u00a0 1\u00a0<\/sup>Now Sarai,\u00a0Abram\u2019s wife, had borne him no children.\u00a0But she had an Egyptian slave\u00a0named Hagar;\u00a02\u00a0<\/sup>so she said to Abram, \u201cThe\u00a0Lord\u00a0has kept me from having children.\u00a0Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.\u201d Abram agreed to what Sarai said.\u00a03\u00a0<\/sup>So after Abram had been living in Canaan ten years,\u00a0Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife.\u00a04\u00a0<\/sup>He slept with Hagar,\u00a0and she conceived.<\/strong><\/p>\nSarai gave Hagar, a woman serving them, to her husband, Abram. This is not something that would be acceptable under today\u2019s ethical standards. However, at the time, this was a common practice to have offspring, and Hagar conceives Abram\u2019s son. This is where the nakedness (shame) of humanity begins to reveal itself. Genesis goes on to record the following.<\/p>\n
Genesis 16:4-6. 4\u00a0<\/sup>He slept with Hagar,\u00a0and she conceived. When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress.\u00a05\u00a0<\/sup>Then Sarai said to Abram, \u201cYou are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my slave in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the\u00a0Lord\u00a0judge between you and me.\u201d 6\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cYour slave is in your hands,\u201d Abram said. \u201cDo with her whatever you think best.\u201d\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\nHagar conceived a son of her master Abram, and looked down on his true wife Sarai.\u3000 This broke Sarai\u2019s heart and created mixed feelings in her mind. However, it was Sarai who urged having a child through Hagar in the first place.<\/p>\n
She suggested it herself, and then she blamed it on Abram, as if he were responsible for what had happened by doing so. Yes, she shifted her own responsibility to her husband. It is exactly the same as with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. And regarding this, her husband Abram did not admonish Sarai, but said.<\/p>\n
Genesis 16:6 \u00a0<\/sup>\u201cYour slave is in your hands,\u201d Abram said. \u201cDo with her whatever you think best.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\nWe can learn an important lesson from this. And it is the following. If Abram had said here, \u201cSarai, that\u2019s not true. The child Hagar bore is my child. That is what you wished for. I will not allow you to lay your hands on this parent and child because of this,\u201d what would have happened thereafter? Furthermore, what if Abram had said to Hagar, \u201cYou should refrain from your words and deeds. It is all God\u2019s grace that a child is in your womb. It is wrong to look down on my wife.\u201d Going back even further, when Sarai told Abram, \u201cSleep with Hagar and get a child,\u201d Abram should have said: \u201cSarai, that is not right. God Himself promised to give a child between us, and we should wait for that time.\u201d<\/p>\n
When the right people don\u2019t say the right things, we will have problems. In the Garden of Eden, when his wife Eve offered Adam that forbidden fruit, he should have said: \u201cEve, do not touch that fruit, for God has said not to eat it.\u201d He should have said \u201cNo\u201d to Eve\u2019s suggestion and rejected it. But he did not reprove Eve at all, but accepted it and ate it, and from that moment sin entered into the heart of man. That has been the cause of humanity\u2019s distress and suffering. Adam and Eve, Abram and Sarai, and their marital relationship, as well as their parent-child relationship, became strained from this point on.<\/p>\n
These people have taught me something. It is that at times I have to say \u201cNo\u201d. Saying \u201cNo\u201d puts a stop to someone\u2019s desire, which may offend them. And it is a normal human desire to want to avoid such things.<\/p>\n
However, if it is not said, it will create problems and pain that the person will later have to reap. Furthermore, I have seen time and time again that the impact is felt by those around that person. That said, if I say no to everything, I am just a stubborn old man. If I say no to something that should be yes, then I will cause someone else a headache.<\/p>\n
When Solomon became king of Israel, he must have realized the importance of this. At the time, God asks Solomon in a dream, \u201cAsk\u00a0for whatever you want me to give you.\u201d (1 Kings 3:5). Then Solomon answered:<\/p>\n
1 Kings 3:9. \u201cSo give your servant a discerning\u00a0heart to govern your people and to distinguish\u00a0between right and wrong. For who is able\u00a0to govern this great people of yours?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\nGod accepted his request as a desire according to God\u2019s will and granted it. People in the Lord, let us pray and ask the Lord to give us a heart to discern when to respond \u201cyes and no\u201d. Based on that wisdom, let us earnestly pray for a heart that is able to say \u201cNo\u201d clearly when it is appropriate, and that is able to discern right from wrong. In this world we live in, we always need people like this. Surely this will save us from difficulties.<\/p>\n
With her husband\u2019s endorsement, Sarah mistreats Hagar from then on. Put another way, Sarah blatantly bullies Hagar.What did Hagar do about Sarah\u2019s bullying? Genesis continues to record:<\/p>\n
Genesis 16:6-12. Then Sarai mistreated\u00a0Hagar; so she fled from her. 7\u00a0<\/sup>The angel of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0found Hagar near a spring\u00a0in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur.\u00a08\u00a0<\/sup>And he said, \u201cHagar,\u00a0slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?\u201d \u201cI\u2019m running away from my mistress Sarai,\u201d she answered. 9\u00a0<\/sup>Then the angel of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0told her, \u201cGo back to your mistress and submit to her.\u201d\u00a010\u00a0<\/sup>The angel added, \u201cI will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.\u201d 11\u00a0<\/sup>The angel of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0also said to her: \u201cYou are now pregnant\u00a0and you will give birth to a son. You shall name him\u00a0Ishmael,\u00a0for the\u00a0Lord\u00a0has heard of your misery. 12\u00a0<\/sup>He will be a wild donkey\u00a0of a man;\u00a0his hand will be against everyone and everyone\u2019s hand against him, and he will live in hostility\u00a0toward all his brothers.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\nBecause of Sarai\u2019s bullying, Hagar ran away from Sarai even though she was heavily pregnant. Along the way, an angel of the Lord meets her and speaks to her, \u201cGo back to your mistress.\u201d Then speaks about the child in her womb.<\/p>\n
Genesis 16:10. \u201cI will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\nHagar accepts the angel\u2019s word and returns to Abram. And she gives birth to a son, as the angel told her, and names him Ishmael. Today, many Arabs claim Ishmael, born of this Hagar, as their ancestor. And the Jews claim Isaac, who was born after this to Abraham and his rightful wife Sarah, as their own ancestor.<\/p>\n
Today, the ratio of the Jewish to Arab population is 1 to 42, and their land area is 1 to 662. As you know, the majority of Arabs today are Muslims. According to the Pew Research Center, the world\u2019s religious population is currently largest among Christians, but by 2050 Muslims and Christians will be roughly equal in number. It is said that by 2070, Muslims will overtake Christians to become the largest force in the world. It says the reason for this increase in the Muslim population is that Muslims have a much higher birth rate than Christians.<\/p>\n
Genesis 16:10\u00a0 \u00a0\u201cI will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\nAmazingly, in ancient times, this was already recorded in Genesis. Thus Hagar gives birth to Ishmael. And Sarah also bears Isaac to Abraham. (Genesis begins to refer to Abram as Abraham and Sarai as Sarah in chapter 17.) These two children, Ishmael and Isaac, can be seen together on Abraham\u2019s property.<\/p>\n
Genesis 21:9-13. 9\u00a0<\/sup>But Sarah saw that the son whom Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham\u00a0was mocking,\u00a010\u00a0<\/sup>and she said to Abraham, \u201cGet rid of that slave woman\u00a0and her son, for that woman\u2019s son will never share in the inheritance with my son Isaac.\u201d 11\u00a0<\/sup>The matter distressed Abraham greatly because it concerned his son.\u00a012\u00a0<\/sup>But God said to him, \u201cDo not be so distressed about the boy and your slave woman. Listen to whatever Sarah tells you, because it is through Isaac that your offspring\u00a0will be reckoned.\u00a013\u00a0<\/sup>I will make the son of the slave into a nation\u00a0also, because he is your offspring.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\nHere God clearly said to Abraham. \u201cThe children that shall be born of your son Isaac shall be reckoned as your offspring.\u201d And He said, \u201cSince the son of Hagar is also your son, he too shall become one nation.\u201d The marital discussions between Abraham and Sarah must have been repeated many times. In conclusion, Abraham, with the words of Sarah and the encouragement of the angel, have this parent and child leave the house.<\/p>\n
Genesis 21:14-21 14\u00a0<\/sup>Early the next morning Abraham took some food and a skin of water and gave them to Hagar.\u00a0He set them on her shoulders and then sent her off with the boy. She went on her way and wandered in the Desert of Beersheba. 15\u00a0<\/sup>When the water in the skin was gone, she put the boy under one of the bushes.\u00a016\u00a0<\/sup>Then she went off and sat down about a bowshot away, for she thought, \u201cI cannot watch the boy die.\u201d And as she sat there, she began to sob. 17\u00a0<\/sup>God heard the boy crying,\u00a0and the angel of God\u00a0called to Hagar from heaven and said to her, \u201cWhat is the matter, Hagar? Do not be afraid;\u00a0God has heard the boy crying as he lies there.\u00a018\u00a0<\/sup>Lift the boy up and take him by the hand, for I will make him into a great nation.\u201d 19\u00a0<\/sup>Then God opened her eyes\u00a0and she saw a well of water.\u00a0So she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink. 20\u00a0<\/sup>God was with the boy\u00a0as he grew up. He lived in the desert and became an archer.\u00a021\u00a0<\/sup>While he was living in the Desert of Paran,\u00a0his mother got a wife for him\u00a0from Egypt.<\/strong><\/p>\nThe bread and water they were given was enough for a few days, but beyond that, there was no guarantee of life for them as they wandered in the wilderness. As someone who experienced the harshness of the wilderness at a recent camp, I understand that the road ahead for this mother and son was hopeless.<\/p>\n
Soon the water ran out. Ishmael cries aloud when it seems that death is prematurely approaching his doorstep. When we think of this child, this child is clearly born out of the unbelief of Abraham and his wife. He was born because they were unable to believe the Word of God.<\/p>\n
However, Ishmael is not responsible for this. God heard the cry of this child and protected Ishmael and Hagar. And He said, \u201cI will make Ishmael into a great nation\u201d (Genesis 21:18). True to God\u2019s word, his descendants now fill the world, multiplying and spreading.<\/p>\n
Perhaps we may find this surprising. But in fact, if one reads the entire Bible carefully, this is not surprising. This is because in Ishmael, the unchangeable character of God is expressed.<\/p>\n
Hagar looked down upon Sarah, didn\u2019t she? That was Hagar\u2019s heart issue. In response, Sarah was harsh with Hagar, placing the blame on her husband and finally kicking her out. That was Sarah\u2019s heart issue. We imagine an indecisive Abraham hovering around them. Herein lies Abraham\u2019s heart issue. They were all imperfect, weak, self-centered, and had \u201cissues\u201d.<\/p>\n
The selfish problems of these adults was thrust upon innocent Ishmael. In this image of them, we see ourselves. This is human nature. From long ago and even now, we have been repeating these things. All kinds of things happen in our homes. We all are dealing with something.<\/p>\n
The Bible points out that the root of these human-created problems is the sin in our hearts. The problems that man has spread because of his sins will extend to our children and grandchildren.<\/p>\n
Yes, like Ishmael, they are not responsible for this. However, people in the Lord, God intervenes in the midst of us. Yes, God is the One who continues to relate to us human beings with mercy toward us. God poured out His mercy on both Ishmael and Isaac.<\/p>\n
We think. I am Jewish. They are Arabs. I am a Christian. They are Muslim. We make a distinction there. But to begin with, Ishmael and Isaac are brothers.<\/p>\n
Certainly there will be conflict between brothers. Abel and Cain, Esau and Jacob, Joseph and his brothers, the Bible is filled with sibling rivalry. Their hatred became so cruel that they took each other\u2019s lives.<\/p>\n
But what parent would desire for their children to hate each other? They are equally irreplaceable to the father who considers them his children. Doesn\u2019t the parable of the prodigal son express this? The love of God the Father was the same for the older brother as it was for the younger brother. God is the One who loves every human being as His own child.<\/p>\n
We say \u201cYes\u201d to things we should say \u201cNo\u201d to and stubbornly say \u201cNo\u201d to things we should say \u201cYes\u201d to. Our decisions are always accompanied by errors, and because of this we can lead many people into suffering. We see the world with our own desires, we pretend to be righteous, and we cause problems, without being mindful of the Father\u2019s will. However, the mercy of our Father God never ceases, and His eyes are on us, imperfect as we are.<\/p>\n
We are now living in this story of God. And this story is not yet complete. So let\u2019s not conclude our entire story based solely on what is currently happening immediately surrounding us. We place our hope in the mercy and grace of God the Father until our last day on earth. We can call God, Father, for we are children of God the Father. May our hearts never be separated from the love and truth of God, who loved us so much that He gave Jesus\u2019 life for us.<\/p>\n
