Aaron: No Human Being is Perfect

We are looking at people in the Bible under the theme of \u201cLearning from Others, How to Live with God.\u201d Last week, Pastor Honda spoke about the life of Moses, becoming Moses himself. This Moses had a brother and a sister. In the book of Micah, we find this description.<\/p>\n
Micah 6:4 I brought you up out of Egypt and redeemed you from the land of slavery. I sent Moses\u00a0to lead you, also Aaron\u00a0and Miriam.<\/strong><\/p>\nHere we find the names of Moses\u2019 older brother Aaron, and his older sister Miriam. Miriam, was the dependable older sister who, with tact and courage, saved the life of her younger brother Moses when he was still a baby and placed in the Nile River.<\/p>\n
Older brother Aaron left Egypt with Moses and led the Israelites with Moses during their 40 years in the wilderness. The fact that Aaron\u2019s name appears 312 times in the Bible indicates that he was a key person for Israel. Aaron and Miriam would have been Moses\u2019 right and left arms, supporting him, and Moses would have been comforted and encouraged by their presence. Today we hope to learn from the two of them, especially Moses\u2019 brother, Aaron, and make it our lesson.<\/p>\n
Once when Moses was approached by God who said to him, \u201cFrom now on you will lead Israel,\u201d Moses whined, \u201cI am not a man of words\u201d. In other words, \u201cI cannot speak in public\u201d.<\/p>\n
But God knew this and chose Moses, encouraging him that with him was his older brother Aaron, an eloquent speaker (Exodus 4:10-16). And according to this, Aaron spoke to the people on behalf of Moses. Think about the interpreter by Shohei Ohtani\u2019s side. He is always by Ohtani\u2019s side. I am sure that Aaron was always by Moses\u2019 side and continued to support him.<\/p>\n
Once, the following happened. When Israel was fighting Amalek, Moses stood on a hilltop and raised high the staff of God. When Moses\u2019 hand went up, Israel prevailed; when it went down, Amalek prevailed. For this reason, when Moses grew weary, his brother Aaron supported his arm and they triumphed. (Exodus 17:8-16).<\/p>\n
Two weeks ago, I told you that Joseph was sold into slavery in Egypt because of the envy of his brothers, but Aaron was different. He was well aware, based on his own position, that the leader of Israel was Moses. Sometimes he turned to Moses, \u201cMy lord,\u201d and became like a servant, and supported his brother\u2019s leadership. From this we can see that Aaron was a man of special meekness and humility.<\/p>\n
Aaron was also a man of compassion. When his sister Miriam fell ill with a skin disease, Aaron immediately cried out for God\u2019s mercy, \u201cO God, heal her\u201d (Numbers 12:10-13).<\/p>\n
On another occasion, a plague broke out amongst the Israelites due to their rebellion, and 14,700 people died. Aaron stood between the dead and the living and interceded with God with his life (Numbers 16:46-50). The Bible refers to that Aaron as \u201cthe holy one of the Lord\u201d (Psalms 106:16).<\/p>\n
But even he had his shortcomings. We can learn from the successes of others, but we can likewise learn valuable lessons from their failures. We are all in the same boat, because there are situations in our lives where we fall prey to similar failures. When we know about the failures of others, we can know how we should be when we are in the same situation. And in doing so, we can protect ourselves and those who are with us.<\/p>\n
The failure occurred when his brother Moses was on top of Mount Sinai to meet with God. When Moses did not return, anxiety spread among the Israelites who were waiting for his return at the foot of the mountain. In the absence of their leader, it was Aaron\u2019s responsibility to lead the people in his stead. At that time, the Israelites pressed Aaron.<\/p>\n
Exodus 32:1 \u201cCome, make us gods\u00a0who will go before\u00a0us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don\u2019t know what has happened to him.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\nAaron tells them.<\/p>\n
Exodus 32:2-6 2\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cTake off the gold earrings\u00a0that your wives, your sons and your daughters are wearing, and bring them to me.\u201d\u00a03\u00a0<\/sup>So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron.\u00a04\u00a0<\/sup>He took what they handed him and made it into an idol\u00a0cast in the shape of a calf,\u00a0fashioning it with a tool. Then they said, \u201cThese are your gods,\u00a0Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.\u201d 5\u00a0<\/sup>When Aaron saw this, he built an altar in front of the calf and announced, \u201cTomorrow there will be a festival\u00a0to the\u00a0Lord.\u201d\u00a06\u00a0<\/sup>So the next day the people rose early and sacrificed burnt offerings and presented fellowship offerings.\u00a0Afterward they sat down to eat and drink\u00a0and got up to indulge in revelry.<\/strong><\/p>\nWhen Aaron was told to \u201cmake us gods who will go before us,\u201d he did not pause before saying, \u201cBring me your gold earrings.\u201d Thus was gathered to Aaron the gold that the people wore. He received them, made a mold with his tools, and made it into a calf. The people must have been delighted when they saw it. They thought that this was the god who had led them out of Egypt, and a feast of drinking and eating began. At the same time, the Lord speaks to Moses on the mountain.<\/p>\n
Exodus 32:7-8 7\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cGo down, because your people, whom you brought up out of Egypt,\u00a0have become corrupt.\u00a08\u00a0<\/sup>They have been quick to turn away\u00a0from what I commanded them and have made themselves an idol\u00a0cast in the shape of a calf.\u00a0They have bowed down to it and sacrificed\u00a0to it and have said, \u2018These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\nWith what thoughts did Moses descend the mountain? In his hand were the stone tablets inscribed with the Ten Commandments given by God. But when he approached the camp at the foot of the mountain and saw the people dancing around the golden calf, Moses became righteously indignant and threw down the tablets, which shattered.<\/p>\n
Then he asks his brother Aaron.<\/p>\n
Exodus 32:21-25 21<\/sup> \u201cWhat did these people do to you, that you led them into such great sin?\u201d 22\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cDo not be angry,\u00a0my lord,\u201d Aaron answered. \u201cYou know how prone these people are to evil.\u00a023\u00a0<\/sup>They said to me, \u2018Make us gods who will go before us. As for this fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don\u2019t know what has happened to him.\u2019\u00a024\u00a0<\/sup>So I told them, \u2018Whoever has any gold jewelry, take it off.\u2019 Then they gave me the gold, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf!\u201d 25\u00a0<\/sup>Moses saw that the people were running wild and that Aaron had let them get out of control and so become a laughingstock\u00a0to their enemies.<\/strong><\/p>\nAaron said to Moses, \u201cWell, well, don\u2019t be so angry. You know very well what kind of people these people are.\u201dHis words must have included an excuse such as, \u201cYou must understand that I was dealing with such troublesome people all by myself.\u201d However, Exodus describes why this incident occurred.<\/p>\n
Exodus 32:25 Moses saw that the people were running wild and that Aaron had let them get out of control and so become a laughingstock\u00a0to their enemies.<\/strong><\/p>\nAfter this happened, Moses came to the Lord and said.<\/p>\n
Exodus 32:31-32 31\u00a0<\/sup>So Moses went back to the\u00a0Lord\u00a0and said, \u201cOh, what a great sin these people have committed!\u00a0They have made themselves gods of gold.\u00a032\u00a0<\/sup>But now, please forgive their sin\u2014but if not, then blot me\u00a0out of the book\u00a0you have written.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\nMoses tried to intercede for the people even at the cost of his own life, but it was not to be. Exodus 32 ends with these words.<\/p>\n
Exodus 32:33-35 33\u00a0<\/sup>The\u00a0Lord\u00a0replied to Moses, \u201cWhoever has sinned against me I will blot out\u00a0of my book.\u00a034\u00a0<\/sup>Now go, lead\u00a0the people to the place\u00a0I spoke of, and my angel\u00a0will go before you. However, when the time comes for me to punish,\u00a0I will punish them for their sin.\u201d 35\u00a0<\/sup>And the\u00a0Lord\u00a0struck the people with a plague because of what they did with the calf\u00a0Aaron had made.<\/strong><\/p>\nMany of the people were struck with a plague because of this. The truth of this event was written down in the Bible.<\/p>\n
\u201cwhat they did with the calf\u00a0Aaron had made\u201d<\/strong> (Exodus 32:35)<\/p>\nSince then, countless people, including us, have come to know Aaron\u2019s failure. Aaron compassionately and humbly supported and interceded for his brother Moses. He was a very \u201cnice person\u201d. Today, being a \u201cnice person\u201d is used as a compliment. Certainly Aaron was that \u201cnice person,\u201d but he also had a side of him whose judgment would change depending on the complexion and pressure of others.<\/p>\n
At that time, the Israelites said,\u00a0\u201cCome, make us gods\u00a0who will go before\u00a0us\u201d<\/strong> (Exodus 32:1).<\/p>\nHe should have rejected it outright, told them what they were to serve, and encouraged them to be patient and wait for Moses\u2019 return from the mountain. But he personally encouraged the people to make a golden calf. This allowed Aaron to avoid friction with the people, who probably thought of him as a \u201cnice man of understanding\u201d. Trying to remain a \u201cnice person\u201d has backfired.<\/p>\n
And because of this, as many as 3000 people who worshipped the golden calf fell by the sword (Exodus 32:28).\u300cWhich would be the wiser choice for us, \u201cthe loss of many lives\u201d or \u201cAaron being thought of as a difficult person\u201d?<\/p>\n
We all encounter situations like this in our lives, no matter how big or small. And we are the ones who could always do the same thing as Aaron. We may think the following in response to this event. Aaron sure made a great mistake.<\/p>\n
Yes, this was fundamentally wrong, and God hates it most of all. It is the worst kind of compromise for a leader to know the true God and to offer a man-made god to His people. We might think, surely, I have never done this and will never do this. However, we want to question our own hearts about this.<\/p>\n
If we were asked, \u201cMake the true God go before us,\u201d how would we then respond? Today, we live in a world where, anytime and anywhere, with a cell phone we can summon gods (idols) with just one click. There are countless things that could become idol gods for us, just one click away. Do not those gods go before us? Are we not pointing our fingers at such gods?<\/p>\n
In regard to Aaron, there was also the following. The incident of the golden calf must have provoked deep introspection in Aaron\u2019s heart. But something similar to what Aaron did with these Israelites happened right around him. The fact that Aaron let the Israelites do whatever they wanted was not only related to the outside world; it was also happening in his own home.<\/p>\n
Aaron had four sons, and Nadab and Abihu were his first two sons. The Bible mentions many priests who serve God directly. Aaron was to be the first of these priests, and this priestly office was to be hereditary.<\/p>\n
Therefore, these two sons were born and raised to be priests just like their father. Priests are those who offer to God on behalf of the people what they offer to God for the forgiveness of their sins.<\/p>\n
The priests had the heavy responsibility of offering sacrifices for the forgiveness of sins. In those days, people\u2019s sins were forgiven and they were cleansed and able to come before God and worship Him through the offering of sacrifices by the priests.<\/p>\n
However, even priests are human beings, so what happened when a priest sinned? They had to offer sacrifices to God for themselves even more solemnly than ordinary people. He had to first receive forgiveness for his own sins and then stand between God and man.<\/p>\n
Nadab and Abihu would have grown up closely observing the various ceremonies before God performed by Aaron, their father and priest, and would have learned their solemn role from their father. However, the following is recorded in Leviticus 10:1-2.<\/p>\n
Leviticus 10:1-2 Aaron\u2019s sons Nadab and Abihu\u00a0took their censers,\u00a0put fire in them\u00a0and added incense;\u00a0and they offered unauthorized fire before the\u00a0Lord,\u00a0contrary to his command.\u00a02\u00a0<\/sup>So fire came out\u00a0from the presence of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0and consumed them,\u00a0and they died before the\u00a0Lord.<\/strong><\/p>\nHere it says, \u201cunauthorized fire\u201d.What this means is that the fire they used was \u201cfire contrary to the regulations\u201d and not what the Lord commanded. What then is the prescribed fire? In Leviticus 16:12, 13, we read.<\/p>\n
Leviticus 16:12-13 12\u00a0<\/sup>He is to take a censer full of burning coals\u00a0from the altar before the\u00a0Lord\u00a0and two handfuls of finely ground fragrant incense\u00a0and take them behind the curtain.\u00a013\u00a0<\/sup>He is to put the incense on the fire before the\u00a0Lord, and the smoke of the incense will conceal the atonement cover\u00a0above the tablets of the covenant law, so that he will not die.<\/strong><\/p>\nThe fire had to be taken \u201cfrom the altar before the Lord\u201d. But they must have brought it from elsewhere at random. We think, \u201cIt\u2019s only fire.\u201d However, even if it is \u201conly\u201d to us, if it is important to the Lord, we should obey Him. Moses, the uncle of these two sons, tells his brother Aaron immediately after this tragedy occurred.<\/p>\n
Leviticus 10:3 Moses then said to Aaron, \u201cThis is what the\u00a0Lord\u00a0spoke of when he said: \u201c\u2018Among those who approach me I will be proved holy; in the sight of all the people I will be honored.\u2019\u201d Aaron remained silent.<\/strong><\/p>\n\u201cAaron remained silent.\u201d What does his silence say about his heart? Probably Aaron fully understood what Moses was saying. As a relative, Moses may have pointed out this problem in the past.<\/p>\n
Probably Aaron knew that his sons were doing this not only at this time. Therefore, he must have had no choice but to remain silent without a word of reply. His earlier attitude toward the Israelites \u2013 \u201cAaron had let them get out of control\u201d (Exodus 32:25) – came out here as well.<\/p>\n
And, surprisingly, this was not limited to the priest Aaron. Eli the priest, who was respected by the people who came after him, and the sons of Samuel the priest had the same problem.<\/p>\n
We look at the message every week under the theme of \u201clearning from others\u201d. If I am going to learn something, I want to learn what is good about the person. However, the Bible is not a book that only describes good things. It also records the mistakes they made without hiding them.<\/p>\n
This is something that Aaron, Eli, and Samuel, the parties involved, would not want to make public. However, the fact that it is recorded in the Bible must mean that it is there with the intention that through this we will not make the same mistake.<\/p>\n
We know. It is extremely difficult to teach the next generation about God\u2019s holiness, the fear of God, and faithful obedience to God. When I think of these things, I get thoughts like, \u201cCan I do that?\u201d If I stand on my children\u2019s side and look back on when I was young, I can also understand how they feel. \u201cOn, what a bother. How can I listen to my parents!\u201d I can understand their point of view. But I think.<\/p>\n
Which should we choose, that they would be offended and say \u201cMy father keeps saying bothersome things,\u201d or \u201cthat their lives would fall into ruin\u201d? It probably goes without saying. In regard to this, we should kneel before the Lord and receive guidance from Him on a daily basis.<\/p>\n
Of course, this is not solely entrusted to the father but naturally includes the mother as well. More to the point, those who know these children will not be uninvolved. We, as the Lord\u2019s church, whether they are parents or relatives or not, should look out for the children who gather here,. We want to keep in mind that we have been entrusted with this role by the Lord. And this is not just about the parent-child relationship. In our marital relationships, as well as in our friendships, there are times when we must speak what we must speak.<\/p>\n
Aaron was a nice person. We think so too. I want to be called a nice husband, a nice wife, a nice son, a nice daughter, a nice friend. It is our desire, and indeed we should be nice people. However, as I mentioned today, there are important things that we avoid because we try to remain a nice person. It is to think about how we should be before the Lord and make the decisions He wants us to make.<\/p>\n
We all have the heart of Aaron. I know that I have exactly the same thing in my heart as Aaron. Because of this, there is a possibility for me to repeat the same mistakes as Aaron did. That being so, we want to learn from this Aaron. We don\u2019t want his failure to be for nothing.<\/p>\n
We have been given this great challenge by the Lord to be good men and women, and additionally to continue to stand by our convictions in the Lord.\u3002Brothers and sisters in the Lord, not this person or that person, but all of us, let us kneel before the Lord and pray. In this church, let us watch over one another, pray for one another, encourage one another, and pray and hope for each other to be able to live fully in the Lord to the end. Let us pray.<\/p>\n
