We are going through a message series \u201cLearning From People, How to Live with God\u201d in our worship services. This series is about knowing how to live with God through the people in the Bible.<\/p>\n
Today, we would like to focus on a woman named Hannah. She was the wife of a man named Elkanah. It was at a time of polygamy. A man could have more than one wife, and Hannah\u2019s husband Elkanah also had a wife named Peninnah. In fact, in Genesis, there were several women married to one man: Sarah and Hagar were Abraham\u2019s wives, and Leah and Rachel were Jacob\u2019s wives.<\/p>\n

When one man has multiple wives (women), we can only imagine the many problems that can arise there. And yes, they all had problems, and at the heart of those problems was the presence or absence of children.<\/p>\n
Abraham\u2019s wife, Sarah, was childless, and because of this, when Abraham had a child by his slave Hagar, it created a rift in their relationship. The fact that Jacob\u2019s wife, Leah, had children and Rachel had no child also caused complications. Considering these problems associated with polygamy, we are reminded of the importance of the God-ordained marriage of one husband and one wife.<\/p>\n
There was always an unsettled feeling in Hannah\u2019s heart, as we will see today. It was that she, too, had wished for a child, but had never been able to have one. In addition, Peninnah\u2019s presence caused her pain. This was because Peninnah had several children while Hannah had none.<\/p>\n
It is unfortunate, but at that time there was a tendency for the power relationship between wives to be determined by how many children they could bear. At a time when the emphasis was on being the \u201cheir\u201d of the family, a childless wife felt ashamed in the family.<\/p>\n
Fortunately, Hannah\u2019s husband, Elkanah, was a loving man who cared about Hannah\u2019s feelings and comforted her with kind words. However, Elkanah\u2019s kindness to Hannah created jealousy in Peninnah.<\/p>\n
To Peninnah, Hannah must have seemed to deprive her of the husband\u2019s love that should have been directed toward her. This is how it is recorded in 1 Samuel 1:6.<\/p>\n
1 Samuel 1:6 Because the\u00a0Lord\u00a0had closed Hannah\u2019s womb, her rival (Peninnah) kept provoking her in order to irritate her.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\nHannah had been bitterly attacked by Peninnah.<\/p>\n
At that time, the tabernacle of the Lord in Israel was located in a place called Shiloh. When we think of the Holy Land of Israel, we think of Jerusalem. However, before David made Jerusalem his capital, people worshipped at the tabernacle in Shiloh.<\/p>\n
This is why Elkanah, accompanied by his family, used to offer sacrifices in Shiloh every year. The family ate their share of the meat of the slaughtered lamb, which was offered there every year. It must have been like our Thanksgiving and Christmas when the family would gather around the turkey and chicken. Concerning that day, 1 Samuel 1:4, 5 states:<\/p>\n
1 Samuel 1:4, 5 4\u00a0<\/sup>Whenever the day came for Elkanah to sacrifice,\u00a0he would give portions of the meat to his wife Peninnah and to all her sons and daughters.\u00a05\u00a0<\/sup>But to Hannah he gave a double portion because he loved her, and the\u00a0Lord\u00a0had closed her womb.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\nWhat we can imagine from this is the scene of Peninnah eating a meal surrounded by her children and Hannah sitting alone at the table. It was supposed to be a pleasant dining table, but the Bible records that Hannah only cried and did not eat. Her husband, Elkanah, looks at Hannah and says:<\/p>\n
1 Samuel 1:8 \u201cHannah, why are you weeping? Why don\u2019t you eat? Why are you downhearted? Don\u2019t I mean more to you than ten sons?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\nI think Elkanah was a good husband who truly loved Hannah. However, his words did not bring comfort to Hannah\u2019s heart. Hannah got up from there and went to the tabernacle. There, the Bible records that she wept with great anguish to the Lord. She makes a vow, and turns to the Lord and prays:<\/p>\n
1 Samuel 1:11 \u201cLord\u00a0Almighty, if you will only look on your servant\u2019s misery and remember\u00a0me, and not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the\u00a0Lord\u00a0for all the days of his life,\u00a0and no razor\u00a0will ever be used on his head.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\nWhen a boy was born, not to apply the razor to his hair meant that the child was to be sanctified and dedicated to God. Hannah vowed that if God would give her a son, she would dedicate him to God. She would have thought she was the only one there. However, there, was Eli, a priest who served in the tabernacle.<\/p>\n
1 Samuel 1:12-14 12\u00a0<\/sup>As she kept on praying to the\u00a0Lord, Eli observed her mouth.\u00a013\u00a0<\/sup>Hannah was praying in her heart, and her lips were moving but her voice was not heard. Eli thought she was drunk\u00a014\u00a0<\/sup>and said to her, \u201cHow long are you going to stay drunk? Put away your wine.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\nWatching her pour out her heart and pray, Eli thought that Hannah had drunk too much wine at a dinner party, and in her stupor had stumbled into the tabernacle. These words of Eli are likely to be passed over as words of caution by a priest serving in the tabernacle.<\/p>\n
However, in reality, his words were a hint of what was going on in the tabernacle on a daily basis at that time. Eli the priest had two sons. They were to be priests as Eli\u2019s heirs. But of them, the Book of Samuel records:<\/p>\n
1 Samuel 2:12 Eli\u2019s sons were scoundrels; they had no regard\u00a0for the\u00a0Lord.<\/strong><\/p>\n2 Samuel 2 records that these sons intercepted the sacrifices that people were offering to God and took them for themselves (2 Samuel 2:13-17). The Bible even tells us that they slept with the women who served at the entrance to the tabernacle (2 Samuel 2:22). Since they were such people, they probably drank alcohol with meat in the Lord\u2019s tabernacle and were drunk at times.<\/p>\n
Because of these sons, the sanctuary of God, far from being a solemn house of prayer, must have had a pervasive air of depravity. So Eli assumed that Hannah, like his sons, was drunk in the tabernacle of the Lord, and he warned her against it. When Eli raises an unforeseen suspicion, Hannah tries to clear up the misunderstanding and says:<\/p>\n
1 Samuel 1:15, 16 15\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cNot so, my lord,\u201d Hannah replied, \u201cI am a woman who is deeply troubled.\u00a0I have not been drinking wine or beer; I was pouring\u00a0out my soul to the Lord. 16\u00a0<\/sup>Do not take your servant for a wicked woman; I have been praying here out of my great anguish and grief.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\nEli must have come to his senses when he heard Hannah\u2019s words. Eli, even though a priest, probably had not seen such pure faith for some time, because of his concerns about his own children. Perhaps that is why he could no longer distinguish between \u201cfervent prayer\u201d and \u201cgetting drunk\u201d. Knowing Hannah\u2019s feelings, Eli, as a priest, spoke words of blessing to Hannah.<\/p>\n
1 Samuel 1:17 \u201cGo in peace,\u00a0and may the God of Israel grant you what you have asked of Him.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\nOf Hannah, who accepted Eli\u2019s words with faith, the Bible says:<\/p>\n
1 Samuel 1:18 She said, \u201cMay your servant find favor in your eyes.\u201d Then she went her way and ate something, and her face was no longer downcast.<\/strong><\/p>\nAfter this, God answered her prayers, and as she hoped, she became pregnant, and being given a son, named him Samuel. Thereafter, the faithful Elkanah and his family go up to the tabernacle again to offer the annual sacrifice and vow offerings. But Hannah does not go with them, and tells Elkanah.<\/p>\n
1 Samuel 1:22 She said to her husband, \u201cAfter the boy is weaned, I will take him and present\u00a0him before the\u00a0Lord, and he will live there always.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\nElkanah responds by saying:<\/p>\n
1 Samuel 1:23 \u201cDo what seems best to you,\u201d her husband Elkanah told her. \u201cStay here until you have weaned him; only may the\u00a0Lord\u00a0make good\u00a0His\u00a0word.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\nWe understand Hannah\u2019s desire as a mother to \u201cbe with her child, at least until he is weaned\u201d. It was her husband, Elkanah, who knew better than anyone how much Hannah had been waiting for that child. Therefore, he accepted her feelings and said, \u201cDo what seems best to you, . . . only may the LORD make good His word.\u201d<\/p>\n
Hannah was the only one who knew of the prayer vow she made at the tabernacle at that time. It was not sworn before the priest Eli, nor was there a written contract. Therefore, no one would have blamed her for not fulfilling that vow. She could have said to herself, \u201cWhat I prayed to God for at that time was just a spur of the moment idea,\u201d and not let go of Samuel.<\/p>\n
However, Hannah knew that God\u2019s power was at work in her pregnancy. She understood very well that this child did not belong to her, but to God. She raised Samuel with this day coming in mind. And it was not only Hannah\u2019s thoughts, but also those of her husband, Elkanah. Numbers 30:13-14 states.<\/p>\n
Numbers 30:13-14 13\u00a0<\/sup>Her husband may confirm or nullify any vow she makes or any sworn pledge to deny herself.\u00a014\u00a0<\/sup>But if her husband says nothing to her about it from day to day, then he confirms all her vows or the pledges binding on her. He confirms them by saying nothing to her when he hears about them.<\/strong><\/p>\nWhen we keep in mind this \u201cvow rule,\u201d we see that the husband Elkanah heard about his wife Hannah\u2019s vow, accepted it, and made it his own. Together, this couple made a decision that to dedicate Samuel to God was a good thing.<\/p>\n
It is recorded that at that time, children were weaned at about three years of age. So Hannah must have spent those three years truly enjoying and valuing being Samuel\u2019s mother each day. I am sure there must have been times when she wished that he would remain not weaned.<\/p>\n
But the time to part finally came. Seeing that Samuel was weaned, Hannah went to Shiloh with young Samuel. There she is reunited with Eli, the priest who gave her his blessing, and says to him:<\/p>\n
1 Samuel 1:26-28 \u201cPardon me, my lord. As surely as you live, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the Lord.\u00a027\u00a0<\/sup>I prayed\u00a0for this child, and the\u00a0Lord\u00a0has granted me what I asked of him.\u00a028\u00a0<\/sup>So now I give him to the\u00a0Lord. For his whole life\u00a0he will be given over to the\u00a0Lord.\u201d And he worshiped the\u00a0Lord\u00a0there.<\/strong><\/p>\nThus, Hannah leaves Samuel with Eli and heads home. The days spent with Samuel for a few years . . . When the time came, she fulfilled the promise to God she had made on that day.<\/p>\n
In Japan, when a child is conceived in a woman\u2019s womb, it is called \u201ca child is given\u201d. That is, the child is a child that has been given, a child that is received. The fact that it was given or received means that there is One who gave it. Have you ever thought about the One who gave you a child?<\/p>\n
If a group of women all run together toward a baby sleeping in a crib on a hill, and the one who gets there first becomes the child\u2019s mother, she may say, \u201cThis is the child I have earned\u201d. But we did not get our children that way. God has given us a child.<\/p>\n
As you know, I was born in Seoul, Korea, to a Korean father and a Japanese mother. My mother was 37 years old at the time. My Korean father died 100 days after I was born.<\/p>\n
A few months after my father\u2019s passing, a child dedication ceremony was held at the Korean church where my mother attended. A child dedication ceremony is a ceremony in which parents offer their child to God, praying that God\u2019s wisdom will be given to the parents as they raise their child and that their child will grow up under God\u2019s protection. It was a large church, so five or six young couples with infants in their arms were invited to the pulpit, where the pastor\u2019s prayer was offered.<\/p>\n
I have heard about that time from my mother. \u201cI was alone with you in my arms where a young couple in a glamorous chimachogori was happily holding their baby.\u201d \u201cAt that moment, along with my gratitude to God, tears flowed down my face as I wondered what would happen to this child without a father.\u201d We, mother and child, started from here.<\/p>\n
Eighteen years later, when I was still in high school, a child dedication ceremony was held at the church where my mother pastored. When I was in high school, I would always attend services, but I would always doze off. Therefore, I have nothing to say to those who sleep comfortably in the worship service.<\/p>\n
However, I still vividly remember the child dedication ceremony that was held during the service when I was 18 years old. At that time, my mother, the pastor, opened the book of Exodus. It was the scene where the daughter of Pharaoh speaks to the mother of Moses.<\/p>\n
Exodus 2:9 \u201cTake this baby and nurse him for me, and I will pay you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\nMy mother said to the young couple standing with their child in front of her. The child that the two of you are now holding in your arms is the child that God has trustingly entrusted to you. As Pharaoh\u2019s daughter said to Moses\u2019 mother, God may be saying to us, \u201cRaise that child on My behalf\u201d. I was only a teenager at the time, but I still remember being struck by the thought that my mother had raised me with this in mind.<\/p>\n
And a few months later, my mother sent me off to the United States. I still remember what she said to me at that time as well. \u201cThank you for being with me for 18 years and giving me so much joy and pleasure. Your mother was able to come this far because of you. The next four years are a thank you from your mother to you. You are free to go see America.\u201d I thought of this as I was preparing this message. That my mother gave me back to the Lord at that time.<\/p>\n
Until that time, I was under my mother\u2019s protection and care. She gave me food, clothing and shelter. If asked whether I had contributed anything to her, I don\u2019t think so; instead, she had suffered and sacrificed because of me. However, she said, \u201cI was able to come this far because of you.\u201d Perhaps parents are the only ones who will say, \u201cJust you being with me, that is all I need to be happy.\u201d<\/p>\n
People in the Lord, Are not our children entrusted to us by God for us to raise on behalf of God the Father? Hannah held her child for three years, and the father, Elkanah, took Hannah\u2019s feelings into account and watched them through those years. During those years, both Hannah and Elkanah must have truly enjoyed their time as Samuel\u2019s parents.<\/p>\n
Hannah and Elkanah were given three years. To those of you who are raising young children now, I am sure that you have been given many more years. However, that time passes quickly. Please cherish the treasured time that God has given you above all else.<\/p>\n
It is recorded in Genesis, \u201cThe child grew and was weaned,\u00a0and on the day Isaac was weaned Abraham held a great feast.\u201d (Genesis 21:8)<\/strong><\/p>\nIn some regions, it was customary to hold a grand feast on the day the child was weaned. There must have been a feast at Samuel\u2019s weaning. Hannah spent her last moments with Samuel, and then, carrying an offering, she took him up to the tabernacle of the Lord in Shiloh, where Eli the priest was.<\/p>\n
Samuel then remained with Eli, where he was trained to become a priest. Thus Samuel would later become the priest who would anoint the heads of Israel\u2019s first king, Saul, and its second king, David.<\/p>\n
There was a Japanese drama called \u201cTonbi\u201d. It is a drama about a father who loses his wife and clumsily raises his son by himself. In one of the scenes, the lady owner of a tavern talks to the father who is lamenting over a drink that his son is leaving for the city to go to college.<\/p>\n
The lady tells him.\u201cIt is enough for the parent to be the Futaba (twin leaves). The twin leaves are the first to sprout after all the hard work, but they don\u2019t get to see all of the growth. That is the Futaba\u2019s destiny. I feel sorry for it. The stalk never looks back and never thanks it for its care, but keeps growing and growing. Maybe that\u2019s how it is with parents and children.\u201d<\/p>\n
Those of us who know God the Father, who has given us a child, pray in our hearts.Parents are indeed like the twin leaves of the sprout. It was God the Father who gave birth to the sprout, watching over the whole process and nurturing it. The Futaba (twin leaves) die off as new shoots grow and bear fruit. The Futaba\u2019s role is to do just that. Giving back to the Lord the child that was given to them, that is the Futaba\u2019s joy.<\/p>\n
What I have spoken today is not about making every child a pastor or missionary. Just as there is no one here and now who is connected to their parents by an umbilical cord, so our children are born by God and live as one individual before Him.<\/p>\n
We pray that these children will be of use to God in some way, and we want to be those who watch over their growth with the Lord. And not only parents, but also our church should watch over the children growing up here and pray that they will one day be useful to the Lord.<\/p>\n
Hannah prayed to God with tears in her eyes, and God answered her prayers. Times change, but I believe that God still answers our prayers.<\/p>\n
