Ezekiel: It All Starts With a \u201cChange of Direction\u201d

Today we will look together at the book of Ezekiel. This book may not be familiar to you. However, here, too, is a profound truth that God teaches us. Generally speaking, a prosperous country or a strong country is cheerful news to us. However, it is hopeless for us when a country is destroyed by an enemy nation and its inhabitants are captured and taken to the enemy country.<\/p>\n
The book of Ezekiel describes the time of the Babylonian captivity in 587 BC, when the kingdom of southern Judah was destroyed by Babylon and many people, including the king, were taken into captivity in Babylon. Ezekiel, who wrote this book, was also called by God to be a prophet in Babylon, where he was taken captive.<\/p>\n
It must have been a humiliating time in Jewish history. Likewise, there are times in our lives when we are full of hope and other times when we must walk in the midst of discouragement for a while. A track and field coach told an athlete whose record had not improved no matter how hard he tried.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen the flower does not bloom, put down deep, deep roots in the earth.\u201d<\/p>\n
For the Israelites, the Babylonian captivity was clearly not a time for blossoming. However, it was a time to reflect on oneself, to confirm the existence of God and the foundation on which one stands, and to rebuild one\u2019s life on that foundation. On this subject their ancestor, Solomon, said.<\/p>\n
Ecclesiastes 7:14\u3000\u3000When times are good, be happy; but when times are bad, consider this:<\/strong><\/p>\nThese can be opportunities for us, depending on how we perceive setbacks and failures. Therefore, at such times, let us reflect on ourselves and take deep roots in the ground. I believe that one day a large flower will bloom from it.<\/p>\n
Ezekiel records a proverb that was often heard among the Jews in captivity in Babylon at that time.<\/p>\n
Ezekiel 18:2\u3000\u3000\u2018The parents eat sour grapes, and the children\u2019s teeth are set on edge\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\nIt is said that the son of a father who eats sour grapes will be the one to have the sour taste. I suppose \u201cteeth are set on edge\u201d means that sour look on our faces that makes us frown. We immediately think. These words are obviously not right. This is because it is like a parent biting into a jalape\u00f1o, and then the child at his side saying, \u201cIt\u2019s spicy!\u201d Such a thing is inherently impossible.<\/p>\n
However, such a saying went around the streets of Babylon in captivity. Why? At that time, they are in a foreign country called Babylon as captives.<\/p>\n
They will live there for 70 years. Seventy years is not a short period of time, and some of these children must have been brought to Babylon by their parents when they were very young and had no idea what to expect. Many would have been born in the midst of captivity. Several generations were involved in those years.<\/p>\n
From among these people, such words came to be heard. \u201cWhy do we have to live such an unreasonable life, as if we were cleaning up our parents\u2019 mess?\u201d That was what was meant by the phrase \u201cThe parents eat sour grapes, and the children\u2019s teeth are set on edge\u201d. To those who feel this way, the Lord speaks.<\/p>\n
Ezekiel 18:1-4\u3000\u30001\u00a0<\/sup>The word of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0came to me:\u00a02\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cWhat do you people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel: \u201c\u2018The parents eat sour grapes, and the children\u2019s teeth are set on edge\u2019? 3\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cAs surely as I live, declares the Sovereign\u00a0Lord, you will no longer quote this proverb\u00a0in Israel.\u00a04\u00a0<\/sup>For everyone belongs to me, the parent as well as the child\u2014both alike belong to me. The one who sins\u00a0is the one who will die.<\/strong><\/p>\nGod tells Ezekiel that this proverb will no longer be quoted in Israel. Certainly we have things that our predecessors did that we must carry on. They may be national debts, or they may be environmental issues, or perhaps debts left by parents.<\/p>\n
But that is not what God is saying here. God is saying here that \u201cthe child will not bear the sins of the parents\u201d. Therefore, God declares, \u201cThis proverb is no longer valid!\u201d This proverb must have been used so often that the prophet Jeremiah, who lived at the same time, wrote the same thing as Ezekiel.<\/p>\n
Jeremiah 31:29-30)\u3000\u300029\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cIn those days people will no longer say,\u2018The parents\u00a0have eaten sour grapes, and the children\u2019s teeth are set on edge.\u201930\u00a0<\/sup>Instead, everyone will die for their own sin;\u00a0whoever eats sour grapes\u2014their own teeth will be set on edge.<\/strong><\/p>\nJeremiah speaks of the same thing as Ezekiel, and then follows these words with a prophecy that is very important in the Bible.<\/p>\n
Jeremiah 31:31-34\u3000\u300031\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cThe days are coming,\u201d declares the\u00a0Lord, \u201cwhen I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah. 32\u00a0<\/sup>It will not be like the covenant I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband\u00a0to them, \u201d declares the\u00a0Lord. 33\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cThis is the covenant I will make with the people of Israel after that time,\u201d declares the\u00a0Lord. \u201cI will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 34\u00a0<\/sup>No longer will they teach\u00a0their neighbor, or say to one another, \u2018Know the\u00a0Lord,\u2019 because they will all know\u00a0me, from the least of them to the greatest,\u201d declares the\u00a0Lord. \u201cFor I will forgive\u00a0their wickedness and will remember their sins\u00a0no more.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\nYes, here Jeremiah goes even further than Ezekiel, prophesying that God will make a new covenant with Israel. Why did the covenant have to be renewed? Jeremiah says that it was not to God\u2019s fault, but because the Israelites did not keep their covenant with God and broke it. And for the sake of Israel, who broke that covenant, God would make a new covenant with them.<\/p>\n
The covenant is not a law engraved in stone, but the law of God will be engraved on the hearts of each of us. Everyone will then come to know God, and God will give them forgiveness, and God will no longer remember their sins. Do you know what this new covenant is pointing to?<\/p>\n
This indicates the forgiveness of sins of the cross by Jesus Christ, who is born about 600 years after this prophecy of Jeremiah. Jeremiah prophesied that the time would come when the Holy Spirit would speak to our hearts and teach each of us about God. In the coming of these times, not only the Israelites but all human beings will bear what is owed to each of us according to what we have done, regardless of the sins of our ancestors. Even if they are the parents of a cute little child, the parents are not responsible for their sins. We are not to be whipped in place of the punishment for someone else\u2019s sins, nor is someone else to bear our sins.<\/p>\n
In a sense, this is a liberating word for us. But at the same time, this asks us of something that we cannot talk our way out of. It means that we are responsible before God for the sins we commit. As Ezekiel writes.<\/p>\n
Ezekiel 18:20. The one who sins is the one who will die.\u00a0The child will not share the guilt of the parent, nor will the parent share the guilt of the child. The righteousness of the righteous will be credited to them, and the wickedness of the wicked will be charged against them.<\/p>\n
Being \u201cresponsible\u201d carries with it a sense of tension. And we think \u201cI want to be exempt from responsibility\u201d. But what do you think, the fact that the responsibility is entrusted to us means that there is trust in us by the One who entrusted it to us.<\/p>\n
And that is why we are given freedom. God trusts us and gives us freedom, and at the same time He gives us responsibility. To stand before God means that we live as people who are responsible for our decisions and their implementation.<\/p>\n
Let me talk about the second thing. I will talk about an important fact. That is, we who have been entrusted with the responsibility are unable to fulfill it. This is everyone\u2019s experience. And there is something that everyone tends to do in response to this. It is that we shift the blame to someone else. Ezekiel wrote this about people\u2019s shifting of blame.<\/p>\n
Ezekiel 18:25-26\u3000\u300025\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cYet you say, \u2018The way of the Lord is not just.\u2019\u00a0Hear, you Israelites: Is my way unjust?\u00a0Is it not your ways that are unjust?\u00a026\u00a0<\/sup>If a righteous person turns from their righteousness and commits sin, they will die for it; because of the sin they have committed they will die.<\/strong><\/p>\nThere are such sad things in the world. What kind of God overlooks such things? So there is no God. People say, \u201cThere is neither God nor Buddha.\u201d Usually we don\u2019t think of God, or mention Him, but when something inconvenient happens, we think, \u201cWhat in the world is God . . .\u201d This is because we are insecure unless we find the locus of responsibility outside of ourselves.<\/p>\n
Why did the sadness in the world occur? Why is there poverty? Why do we have accidents? Why are Arctic glaciers melting? Why is there a traffic jam on the day when I have an important interview? Why couldn\u2019t I find a parking spot this morning? Why is it that what I am hoping for today is not coming true? Are these all, God\u2019s fault? I will say it again. Are all these things that are undesirable to us really God\u2019s fault?<\/p>\n
The same was true of the Israelites in captivity. It is our parents\u2019 fault that we became captives. It is our grandparents\u2019 fault. They say it\u2019s all God\u2019s fault that this happened to us. They say my way is right. God\u2019s way is not right. Everyone has these feelings, more or less. God is usually silent about such ignorant words of man, but in this Ezekiel, he speaks out clearly.<\/p>\n
Ezekiel 18:25\u3000\u3000\u201cYet you say, \u2018The way of the Lord is not just.\u2019\u00a0Hear, you Israelites: Is my way unjust?\u00a0Is it not your ways that are unjust?<\/strong><\/p>\nNot surprisingly, this has been true since the time of mankind\u2019s first couple, Adam and Eve. When they ate the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden, Adam made a complaint to God.<\/p>\n
Genesis 3:12\u3000\u3000\u201cThe woman you put here with me\u2014she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\nAdam is clearly saying that he ate the fruit because of \u201cthe woman,\u201d that is, his wife, Eve. If one reads the words more carefully, there it says, \u201cyou put here with me\u201d. Yes, he says, \u201cIt is not my fault that I ate the forbidden fruit, but because you gave that woman to me\u201d.<\/p>\n
Ladies and gentlemen, we are heirs of his blood, and therefore we will always have this thought in our hearts. And as long as we remain there, the problems we have will never be solved. Because we are misjudging the cause of the problem. Yes, the problem is within us. The Bible calls it sin. So what should we do about it? Let me talk about the third thing.<\/p>\n
Ezekiel 18:27-32\u3000\u300027\u00a0<\/sup>But if a wicked person turns away from the wickedness they have committed and does what is just and right, they will save their life.\u00a028\u00a0<\/sup>Because they consider all the offenses they have committed and turn away from them, that person will surely live; they will not die.\u00a029\u00a0<\/sup>Yet the Israelites say, \u2018The way of the Lord is not just.\u2019 Are my ways unjust, people of Israel? Is it not your ways that are unjust? 30\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cTherefore, you Israelites, I will judge each of you according to your own ways, declares the Sovereign\u00a0Lord. Repent!\u00a0Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall.\u00a031\u00a0<\/sup>Rid\u00a0yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart\u00a0and a new spirit. Why\u00a0will you die, people of Israel?\u00a032\u00a0<\/sup>For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign\u00a0Lord. Repent\u00a0and live!<\/strong><\/p>\nThe Lord says, \u201cI will judge each of you according to your own ways\u201d. These words do not say \u201cyou are sinful compared to that person\u201d. These words literally mean that we must stand before God according to each one of our ways.So what is it that we are encouraged to do?<\/p>\n
Ezekiel 18:30, 31<\/p>\n
Repent! Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall.\u3000\u3000\u3000\u3000\u3000Repent\u00a0and live!<\/strong><\/p>\nAbout 600 years after the time of this Ezekiel, there was a man crying out in the wilderness. People from Jerusalem, all of Judea, and the surrounding area of Jordan came to him, John, in great numbers. He said to the Pharisees and Sadducees who were among them.<\/p>\n
Matthew 3:7, 8\u3000\u3000\u201cYou brood of vipers!\u00a0Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?\u00a08\u00a0<\/sup>Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.<\/strong><\/p>\nWe like to talk about the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5. It is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, and we sincerely desire to bear this fruit. However, that\u2019s not the only fruit the Bible talks about.<\/p>\n
There is also the \u201cfruit of repentance,\u201d which the Bible also says to bear. No, in fact, first this fruit of repentance is borne, and then the fruit of the Spirit. Shortly after John cried out in the wilderness, \u201cBear the fruit of repentance,\u201d Jesus Christ was the first to preach the gospel of God. With what call did Christ begin his missionary work?<\/p>\n
Mark 1:15\u3000\u3000\u201cThe time has come,\u201d\u00a0he said.\u00a0\u201cThe kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe\u00a0the good news!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\nLadies and gentlemen, we must keep in mind that Jesus Christ\u2019s first words were \u201cRepent\u201d. Later, Jesus called together twelve disciples of his own choosing and sent them out two by two to do the work. What was it that they did everywhere they went? The book of Mark records.<\/p>\n
Mark 6:12\u3000They went out and preached that people should repent.<\/strong><\/p>\nIn the book of Acts, immediately after the people received the Holy Spirit, they asked Peter, \u201cWhat shall we do?\u201d Peter answered:<\/p>\n
Acts 2:38\u3000\u3000\u201cRepent and be baptized,\u00a0every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\nPaul spoke before the Greeks at the Areopagus in Athens.<\/p>\n
Acts 17:30.\u00a0 \u00a0In the past God overlooked\u00a0such ignorance,\u00a0but now he commands all people everywhere to repent.<\/strong><\/p>\nIn Miletus, before the elders of the church in Ephesus, Paul explained in this way what he had done so far.<\/p>\n
Acts 20:21.\u00a0 I have declared to both Jews\u00a0and Greeks that they must turn to God in repentance\u00a0and have faith in our Lord Jesus.<\/strong><\/p>\nWhen Paul was allowed to plead his case before Agrippa, the king of the Jews, he used these words to describe what he had done up to that point as well.<\/p>\n
Acts 26:20.\u00a0 \u00a0First to those in Damascus,\u00a0then to those in Jerusalem\u00a0and in all Judea, and then to the Gentiles,\u00a0I preached that they should repent\u00a0and turn to God and demonstrate their repentance by their deeds.<\/strong><\/p>\nWe often hear the words \u201cGod\u2019s love\u201d or \u201cGod\u2019s grace\u201d as the biblical message, and naturally they are mentioned in the message. And we often hear the phrase, \u201cIt\u2019s okay to be just as you are\u201d. No one is offended by this \u201cbe just as you are\u201d and no one gets upset by it.<\/p>\n
Certainly we do not need to make ourselves look put together before God. That prodigal son did not return home to his father after washing his filthy body and changing his clothes; he returned home just as he was. However, before he actually returned to his father, he had made a decision.<\/p>\n
Luke 15:18.\u00a0 \u201cI will set out and go back to my father and say to him: \u2018Father, I have sinned\u00a0against heaven and against you.\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\nWith this repentance, he returned to his father literally as he was. Everyone wants to hear a comfortable story. We think tell me a generous story. But first, repentance. Why repentance first?<\/p>\n
The word \u201crepentance\u201d is \u201cteshuva\u201d (\u05ea\u05e9\u05d5\u05d1\u05d4) in the original Hebrew of the Old Testament and \u201cmetanoia\u201d (\u03bc\u03b5\u03c4\u03ac\u03bd\u03bf\u03b9\u03b1) in the original Greek of the New Testament. And in both languages, it means \u201cchange of direction\u201d. If we desire to live with God, we will first have to turn our previous direction of life toward Him.<\/p>\n
If all we hear are words that stroke our self-esteem but do not change the direction we are headed, then we are not living in the direction God wants us to. By repenting, that prodigal son changed the direction of his previous way of life and returned to the home where his father was waiting for him. Therefore, let us first repent before God.The basic premise for anything we do depends on whether or not we are certain of where we are going.<\/p>\n
Let me talk about the fourth thing.Up to this point, you may have been listening to this pastor, thinking what a harsh thing to say. Finally, I would like to talk about our hope. Ezekiel writes of God’s true feelings toward those who sin.<\/p>\n
Ezekiel 18:31-32\u00a0\u00a0 31\u00a0<\/sup>Rid\u00a0yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart\u00a0and a new spirit. Why\u00a0will you die, people of Israel?\u00a032\u00a0<\/sup>For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign\u00a0Lord. Repent\u00a0and live!<\/strong><\/p>\nEzekiel 33:11. 11\u00a0<\/sup>Say to them, \u2018As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign\u00a0Lord, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live.\u00a0Turn!\u00a0Turn from your evil ways! Why will you die, people of Israel?\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\nEach person who reads the words of the Bible will have various impressions and feelings. There will be those who read the same thing and feel nothing and are absent-minded, and there will be those whose hearts are cold thinking that they already know this stuff. But \u201ca certain man\u201d was shaken to his core when he read this Ezekiel 33:11.<\/p>\n
At that time, \u201ca certain man\u201d was in a certain prison. He was a former gangster with seven previous convictions, and was in prison because of the crimes he had committed. But in that prison, he picked up a Bible and started reading from Genesis, and then he came to this book of Ezekiel, and the words of this 33:11 caught his eye.<\/p>\n
I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live.\u00a0Turn!\u00a0Turn from your evil ways!<\/p>\n
That certain man, Pastor Tatsuya Shindo, who is currently the pastor of the \u201cSinner\u2019s Friend Church\u201d in Kawaguchi, Saitama, says. That these words made him ashamed of his previous selfish lifestyle, and for the first time in his life, he repented.<\/p>\n
Please remember. God is not pleased with the death of the wicked. An evil person is not a person with a criminal record. It is me and you who are living the way you want to live, turning your back on God, even though He exists.<\/p>\n
This was clear to Pastor Shindo without being pointed out. The fact that Pastor Shindo was behind bars at that time means that he admitted to himself and others that he was an evil person. So, he was really happy. Because he knew that these words were clearly being spoken to him. \u201cI take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live.\u201d<\/p>\n
God speaks to us. \u201cTurn! Turn from your evil ways!\u201d This is God\u2019s will for us.<\/p>\n
Ladies and Gentlemen, our God is not watching what we say and do to judge us. God desires for us. Why should it be okay for you to die!\u00a0 You are to live together with Me! These words are spoken to each and every one of us.<\/p>\n
Ladies and gentlemen, I cannot go to heaven and meet John and Paul without speaking of these things. I cannot report to Jesus what I have been speaking. They would say, \u201cWhat have you been talking about on earth?\u201d<\/p>\n
Repentance is an essential biblical message. Because it all begins here. And the Lord Jesus\u2019 forgiveness on the cross for our repentance is the highlight of the Bible.<\/p>\n
God says, \u201cI take no pleasure in your death\u201d. That is why I sent My only begotten Son Jesus for you. My only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, died for you so that you would not die. The only way for us to know this God and to receive His love is to know who we really are and to repent of that before the Lord. I would like to end today\u2019s message with the words of Isaiah, who felt this in his heart.<\/p>\n
Isaiah 55:6-8.\u00a0 6\u00a0<\/sup>Seek\u00a0the\u00a0Lord\u00a0while he may be found; call\u00a0on him while he is near. 7\u00a0<\/sup>Let the wicked forsake\u00a0their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts. Let them turn\u00a0to the\u00a0Lord, and he will have mercy\u00a0on them, and to our God, for he will freely pardon. 8\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cFor my thoughts\u00a0are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,\u201d declares the\u00a0Lord.<\/strong><\/p>\nYou can always redo your life.\u00a0 And that redo begins with repentance. The Lord is a generous forgiver. He does not want us to die. If your life were to end today, would you be with the Lord today?<\/p>\n
People in the Lord, what I have spoken of this morning is not about what is on the menu for dinner this evening, and it is not about the destination of a vacation for this summer. It is about our eternity.<\/p>\n
People in the Lord, let us first have assurance that we are living in line with God, and then let us plan our lives upon that path. As I said, each of us is responsible before God. That is to say, we think and make our own decisions about ourselves. Someone else cannot make your decisions for you.<\/p>\n
