Annas and Caiaphas: What Replaces \u201cEnvy\u201d

Pastor Honda and I are currently delivering messages every Sunday about \u201cpeople who appear in the Bible.\u201d For these messages, we take turns selecting a person from the Bible to focus on. And today, I am focusing on Annas and Caiaphas. However, when I looked intently at these two, I regretted bringing them up.<\/p>\n
There are plenty of stories about Peter and Paul. They have also written letters, and there is no shortage of things I could tell you about them. But the two people I am focusing on this time, do not have that much written about them. However, upon carefully researching and reflecting on these two individuals, I realized they have a clear message for us. I pray that what is spoken through them will touch our hearts and make our lives better. Luke, in writing his Gospel that begins with the birth of Jesus Christ, first concisely recorded the historical background of that era at the outset.<\/p>\n
Luke 3:1-2<\/p>\n
1\u00a0<\/sup>In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar\u2014when Pontius Pilate\u00a0was governor of Judea, Herod\u00a0tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene\u2014\u00a02\u00a0<\/sup>during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas,\u00a0the word of God came to John\u00a0son of Zechariah\u00a0in the wilderness.<\/strong><\/p>\nIn verse 1 it describes the political landscape of the time, noting that it was the fifteenth year of Emperor Tiberius\u2019s reign. He reigned as Roman emperor from 14 to 37 AD, coinciding with the period of Jesus Christ\u2019s ministry. The first emperor of the Roman Empire was Augustus, and this Tiberius became Augustus\u2019 adopted son and the second emperor.And it was under this Emperor Tiberius that the Roman, Pilate, was appointed to serve as the fifth governor of the Roman province of Judea from 26 to 36 AD. Thus, the Roman Empire held the actual control over Israel at that time.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, to govern the Jews, who possessed a faith and culture entirely distinct from that of the Romans, Rome installed the Herodian dynasty as kings to rule over Judea. This is the Herod who ordered the killing of all male children under the age of two in Bethlehem and its surrounding areas at the time of Jesus Christ\u2019s birth. Rome demanded that Herod maintain friendly relations with Rome and submit to its authority. Can you understand the relationship between the Roman Emperor Tiberius, the governor of Judea Pilate, and King Herod? This indicates that Israel at that time was politically complex, with clear domination and submission through force.<\/p>\n
And in verse 2, it speaks of the religious leaders of that time, mentioning the names of Annas and Caiaphas. Yes, Annas and Caiaphas were high priests. Their relationship was that of father-in-law and son-in-law.<\/p>\n
Annas served as high priest from 6 to 15 AD and retained immense influence in Jerusalem for the rest of his life. Subsequently, the Roman Empire appointed Annas\u2019 son-in-law, Caiaphas, as the official high priest, but the actual administration was carried out by Annas and Caiaphas. Having seen this far, we can easily imagine the following things that were stirring within Israel at that time. Clinging to vested interests, power struggles, self-preservation, sycophancy…These matters are not unrelated to us; even now, we live our lives shaken by such things. In the world of politics, in the world of business, and in the religious sphere, these things still exist today.<\/p>\n
Now then, today, let\u2019s take a look at what kind of relationship Annas and Caiaphas had with Jesus Christ? In a word, they were the people involved in the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ was betrayed by Judas and arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane, then first brought before Annas (John 18:13). Then Jesus was handed over to the Sanhedrin (Supreme Court), presided over by his son-in-law, the high priest Caiaphas.<\/p>\n
Matthew 26:57-59<\/p>\n
57\u00a0<\/sup>Those who had arrested Jesus took him to Caiaphas\u00a0the high priest, where the teachers of the law and the elders had assembled.\u00a058\u00a0<\/sup>But Peter followed him at a distance, right up to the courtyard of the high priest.\u00a0He entered and sat down with the guards\u00a0to see the outcome. 59\u00a0<\/sup>The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin\u00a0were looking for false evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death.<\/strong><\/p>\nWhat this shows is that the trial Caiaphas presided over was conducted in a manner that disregarded the rules. It was already midnight when the members of the Sanhedrin were summoned, and testimony, interrogation, and deliberation took place. Despite the Mishnah, their oral law, stipulating that trials should not be held after sunset, the trial proceeded.<\/p>\n
The defendant should have been provided with counsel, but this was not done. Moreover, the chief priests and the entire council sought false testimony to accuse Jesus, and indeed, false witnesses gave false testimony. This trial was designed from the outset to condemn Jesus to death, and Caiaphas forced the council to pass a resolution demanding Jesus\u2019 execution.<\/p>\n
However, since Judea was under Roman rule at the time, the execution of the death penalty was not permitted. Therefore, early in the morning, Jesus was sent from Caiaphas to the Roman governor Pilate, and Pilate demanded the death penalty for Jesus. For this reason, Pilate\u2019s name has been disgraced by being perpetuated in the Apostle\u2019s Creed through the phrase \u201csuffered under Pontius Pilate.\u201dThus, Jesus\u2019 death sentence was finalized, and crucifixion was carried out immediately.<\/p>\n
Annas and Caiaphas, though priests, clearly participated in the crucifixion of Jesus. What was going on in their minds up until that point? What do you think was going on in their minds? Matthew records what was in their hearts concerning this matter.<\/p>\n
Matthew 27:18 For he (Pilate) knew that because of envy they had handed Him over (NASB1995)<\/strong><\/p>\nFor Pilate, the Roman governor, the faith of the Jews was of no consequence whatsoever. It\u2019s not that he was making a big deal out of it. But he knew. The reason these men brought Jesus to me and demanded that I sentence him to death is because of their envy of him.<\/p>\n
And what Pilate feared most was the Jewish rebellion and uprising that might occur if he did not grant their request. If that were to happen, Pilate\u2019s position\u2014having been entrusted by Caesar with authority over Judea\u2014would become precarious. Therefore, he granted the Jewish council\u2019s request for Jesus\u2019 death sentence. It was human \u201cenvy\u201d and \u201cself-preservation\u201d that crucified Jesus, the only Son of God.<\/p>\n
The office of high priest in Jewish society traces back to Aaron, Moses\u2019 brother (Exodus 40:15), and throughout Israel\u2019s history, the high priest has borne the sacred duty of mediating between God and humanity. Before them appeared Jesus Christ, the Son of God.The high priest should have been the first to recognize that Jesus was the Messiah sent by God and should have served him. But their eyes were blinded, and they saw Jesus as a threat to their status. They were envious of Jesus because the crowd pressed in around Him to hear His words more than to them. They had always watched that scene with bitterness.<\/p>\n
John the Baptist declared of Jesus, \u201cthe straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie\u201d (John 1:27). John also said, \u201cHe must become greater; I must become less.\u201d (John 3:30) The priests, too, should have discerned Jesus\u2019 true identity like John and known their place. But more than that, the feeling of envy in their hearts had grown immense. In addition to this, Jesus bluntly called the religious leaders \u201chypocrites\u201d and stated the fact that they had turned the temple into a den of thieves. Thus their envy ripened, transforming into anger and murderous intent.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat is envy? I have no idea what you are talking about.\u201d Is there anyone who would say that? This feeling resides within the human heart. This envy is already present even in the hearts of young children. When the child next to them has a more appealing toy, their eyes already betray feelings of envy. If it were a child, you could still laugh it off with an \u201cOh my,\u201d but when it comes to adults, that is not possible. The emotion of envy leads to far more dreadful consequences than we imagine.<\/p>\n
When we see people who seem happy or joyful, we feel envy. In reality, even those who seem happy or joyful are troubled and agonizing over various things . . . I envy when I see people who have things or gifts I don\u2019t have. Setting aside the fact that I too have been given things and gifts that others don\u2019t possess . . . Even when what is right is said or done, envy arises. At that moment, I forget that I too sometimes wield righteous arguments . . .<\/p>\n
Envy, once it takes root in the heart, has a tendency to grow larger day by day. And when that happens, intense hatred toward that person wells up inside. You may even come to find that person\u2019s presence bothersome. No, that\u2019s an exaggeration. Is it?<\/p>\n
What caused the first murder in human history? It was caused by envy. Cain, the firstborn son of Adam and Eve, envied his younger brother Abel, believing that God favored Abel more than him. God, knowing that the feeling of envy was growing ever larger within his heart, warned him thus.<\/p>\n
Genesis 4:7<\/p>\n
\u201csin is crouching at your door;\u00a0it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\nYour heart is on the verge of sin. That sin creeps up on you. Restrain it. But Cain could not control his heart, so he took his brother Abel out into the open field and killed him.<\/p>\n
Saul, the first king of Israel, heard women singing a song in the city.<\/p>\n
I Samuel 18:7 \u201cSaul has slain his thousands, \u00a0and David his tens\u00a0of thousands.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\nThis incident sparked Saul\u2019s envy toward David, which steadily escalated until his mind became troubled. Saul pursued David relentlessly, as if possessed, seeking to kill him. Fearing God, David repeatedly gave Saul chances to change his heart despite Saul\u2019s murderous intent driven by envy. However, like Cain, Saul could not break free from his envy. Saul\u2019s heart never regained peace, and he ended his life in the mountains by a cruel death.<\/p>\n
Dear people in the Lord, the power of envy is immense, and it is exceedingly difficult for us to control it. Even after becoming a Christian, it is difficult to overcome. Because envy clings to our hearts like rust. In Romans 12:15, Paul wrote these words:<\/p>\n
Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Two things are written here. Rejoice with those who rejoice. Grieve with those who grieve. Which is easier for you? To grieve with those who grieve\u2014is this not something we can do without difficulty?<\/p>\n
No matter the era or the country, no matter who the person is, even if they are a stranger, we can empathize with the sorrow of losing a family member. But what about rejoicing with those who rejoice? At that moment, our hearts are searched.<\/p>\n
What kind of person is truly humble? Phrases like \u201cI am not worthy\u201d or \u201cI can\u2019t do anything\u201d are often seen as signs of humility, but is that really the case? My mentor taught me: \u201cA truly humble person is someone who can praise others.\u201d<\/p>\n
If envy dwells in our hearts, we cannot bring ourselves to praise another\u2019s good qualities, even if we our mouths were split open. Our pride won\u2019t allow it. And, dreadfully, we wish for that person\u2019s failure. Here is a question we must pause and consider carefully. It is the question: \u201cAre we to spend the rest of our lives carrying this bitter feeling?\u201d<\/p>\n
Young people are here. You must see and hear many things every day. When I was young, athletic guys were overwhelmingly popular, but what about now?<\/p>\n
I resented children who were more athletic than me. However, now forty years later, no one talks about their athletic abilities anymore. Back then, we focused on handsome kids and cute kids. Now forty years later, our appearances have become almost identical. Students with good grades were held in high regard. Forty years later, I have come to understand that academic performance and character are largely unrelated. Looking back now, I realize there was no reason to envy these things.<\/p>\n
Envy requires a great deal of our energy. If we could pour that energy into something more important, we could expand the possibilities God has given us in our own lives.<\/p>\n
We Japanese tend to be a people who compare ourselves to others more than people in other countries. We find comfort and solace in the idea of \u201ceveryone together\u201d (all the same). In truth, the idea that \u201ceveryone is the same\u201d is impossible, yet we seek it. Those who step outside that framework are envied and excluded from the group.<\/p>\n
Someone once said, \u201cThose who live by comparing themselves to others can never experience true freedom.\u201d Comparison and envy imprison our hearts. We lose the freedom of our hearts. Let us understand that by comparing ourselves to others in an attempt to know our own worth, peace will never come to our hearts. People in the Lord, should we continue to remain in such a place?<\/p>\n
When we believe in God, we come to know what it means to be an \u201cindividual\u201d. Because it reveals the relationship between \u201cGod\u201d and \u201cI,\u201d between \u201cyou\u201d and \u201cme.\u201d When we come to understand this, we become able to think of ourselves and others as separate entities.<\/p>\n
What Solomon said was right. Ecclesiastes 12:1 Remember\u00a0your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble\u00a0come and the years approach when you will say, \u00a0\u201cI find no pleasure in them\u201d\u2014<\/p>\n
Life may be like a marathon. At the start line, there are many people. At first, the atmosphere feels like a festival. Yet, a tension hangs in the air, as if deciding winners and losers.<\/p>\n
That guy is wearing the latest Nike sneakers. Compared to that, I . . . Check out that guy\u2019s calves. Man, I can\u2019t compete with that. With such thoughts in mind, the starting gun sounded, and we began running the marathon of life.<\/p>\n
Just like in a marathon, we run together as a group for a while. Since there are runners in front of and behind me, I can\u2019t help but be aware of my surroundings. That \u201cNike guy\u201d and \u201ccalves guy\u201d keep catching my eye.<\/p>\n
However, within an hour, the crowd begins to disperse for various reasons. And finally, you are left alone. Both \u201cNike\u201d and \u201ccalves\u201d are no longer in my field of vision. All you can hear is the sound of your desperate breathing and the wind. Yes, all one hears is the sound of their own life and the sound created by God.<\/p>\n
Everyone, how many years have passed since that starting point? \u00a0Where are you running in life right now? What do you see? Are you aware that you are running the race of life with the Lord Jesus? Sure, even now, there might be people who occasionally pass you by. But he or she has also endured life\u2019s hardships just like us to get this far, so as fellow human beings, they are like comrades. So let\u2019s make way for that person as they run past us, and cheer them on from behind.<\/p>\n
Some people may be resting along the way because they are tired. There is no point in thinking things like \u201cI passed you\u201d at that moment. He or she is resting because they are tired. I am me. That me is the man whom the Lord Jesus loved so much He gave His life for. That is enough. Let us pour our precious energy, which is drained away by envy, into things that truly matter. What truly makes this journey of life dull, and even dangerous, is \u201cenvy\u201d.<\/p>\n
Just walk straight down the road leading to the Father\u2019s house. And if I may add, enjoy whatever you see and hear along the way. What we now see and hear on this earth will soon be the last we see of it, for we will become citizens of the kingdom.
