of Arimathea &amp; Nicodemus: When a Man Becomes a Disciple of Jesus<br \/>\nMarch 1, 2026<\/p>\n<p>When reading the Bible, we see that God placed unexpected people at pivotal moments in events. When we look at the people involved in those events, we begin to see God\u2019s will.<\/p>\n<p>The birth of Jesus Christ was announced to the poor \u201cshepherds\u201d who lived in the fields at that time, and to the \u201cMagi from the East\u201d, who religiously had nothing to do with the faith of Israel. And when Jesus was resurrected, the Lord first appeared in front of His tomb to Mary Magdalene, who had been possessed by seven demons.<\/p>\n<p>What these people all have in common is that they were the ones God deliberately chose to deliver the most important message. What message does God\u2019s selection of these people convey to us?<\/p>\n<p>For Mary Magdalene to encounter the resurrected Jesus at the tomb, that tomb where Jesus was laid to rest was necessary. The reason I mention this is that at that time, those who were crucified and killed on the cross were considered cursed and unclean, and their bodies were discarded like garbage. If no one had claimed the body of Jesus, it too would have been discarded. It was Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, whom I will talk about today, that devoted themselves to Jesus\u2019 burial.<\/p>\n<p>John 19:38-42<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>38\u00a0<\/sup>Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders.\u00a0With Pilate\u2019s permission, he came and took the body away.\u00a0<sup>39\u00a0<\/sup>He was accompanied by Nicodemus,\u00a0the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.<sup> 40\u00a0<\/sup>Taking Jesus\u2019 body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen.\u00a0This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.\u00a0<sup>41\u00a0<\/sup>At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid.\u00a0<sup>42\u00a0<\/sup>Because it was the Jewish day of Preparation\u00a0and since the tomb was nearby,\u00a0they laid Jesus there.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Actually, Jesus\u2019 disciples should have fulfilled this important role, but at that time, they had all abandoned Jesus and disappeared. In their place, Joseph of Arimathea provided a new tomb for Jesus. Nicodemus also offered a large quantity of myrrh and aloes, about 34 kilograms (75 pounds), to anoint Jesus\u2019 body, and buried Him in the tomb.<\/p>\n<p>Being a Christian in America is not uncommon, and Christian faith can be seen everywhere. However, in Japan, being a Christian is very rare. Because in Japan, Christians make up less than 1 percent of the population. And \u201cChristianity\u201d is sometimes confused with \u201csuspicious religions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both my wife and I were raised in Japan as pastor\u2019s kids. Many Japanese churches are housed in ordinary homes, and during my sensitive middle school years, I lived in the \u201cTsujido Christian Church\u201d that was on the route to school. Above the entrance hung a large church sign, and I disliked having to go out from there to the path my friends took to school. So I made sure no one was around before leaving the house.<\/p>\n<p>Back then, it was an era without cell phones. There was only one telephone in the house. I hated answering the phone. Because I had to pick up the phone and say, \u201cThis is Tsujido Christian Church.\u201d When a friend called and I said, \u201cThis is Tsujido Christian Church,\u201d they thought it was a wrong number, and an awkward silence followed. For this reason, I no longer answered the phone by saying, \u201cThis is Tsujido Christian Church.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Japan, it takes courage to be \u201cdifferent from others\u201d. I hoped my friend would not notice my faith. In fact, both Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus were men who were hiding their faith. John writes this about Joseph.<\/p>\n<p>John 19:38<\/p>\n<p><strong>Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jewish leaders.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>John also writes this about Nicodemus.<\/p>\n<p>John 19:39<\/p>\n<p><strong>He was accompanied by Nicodemus,\u00a0the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Both of them tried to hide their relationship with Jesus. Joseph secretly became a disciple of Jesus. Nicodemus went to see Jesus at night, as if hiding, avoiding the gaze of others. The Bible records that both of them were members of the Jewish council, the Sanhedrin, at that time, and this is thought to have been the major reason.<\/p>\n<p>As I mentioned two weeks ago, the high priests Annas and Caiaphas were at the top of this Sanhedrin, and they were the ones who opposed Jesus and desired His death. Therefore, for them to befriend Jesus, while serving as members of the Sanhedrin, to become His disciples, meant that their very positions were threatened. Therefore, they took great care to keep their relationship with Jesus from becoming widely known. However, these two gradually began to act boldly without caring about others\u2019 eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Luke 23:50-51<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>50\u00a0<\/sup>Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man,\u00a0<sup>51\u00a0<\/sup>who had not consented to their decision and action. He came from the Judean town of Arimathea, and he himself was waiting for the kingdom of God.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a religiously and politically pressured assembly, fully aware of the risks involved in not agreeing with the majority\u2019s decisions and actions,\u3000Joseph remained true to his convictions to protect Jesus. Furthermore, in John 7:50-51, we see that Nicodemus also defends Jesus, who was being criticized by the chief priests and Pharisees.<\/p>\n<p>What happened in the hearts of Joseph, who had secretly become a disciple of Jesus, and Nicodemus, who came to see Jesus by night, avoiding the gaze of others? In Luke 23:51, which I just read, there is a hint recorded that addresses this question.<\/p>\n<p><sup>50\u00a0<\/sup>Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man,\u00a0<sup>51\u00a0<\/sup>who had not consented to their decision and action. He came from the Judean town of Arimathea, and he himself was waiting for the kingdom of God.<\/p>\n<p>Joseph was a good and upright man, and he was waiting for the kingdom of God. John records the following exchange that once took place between Nicodemus and Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>John 3:1-5<\/p>\n<p><strong>Now there was a Pharisee, a man named Nicodemus\u00a0who was a member of the Jewish ruling council.\u00a0<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>He came to Jesus at night and said, \u201cRabbi,\u00a0we know\u00a0that you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the signs\u00a0you are doing if God were not with him.\u201d\u3000<sup>3\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus replied,\u00a0\u201cVery truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.\u201d<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cHow can someone be born when they are old?\u201d Nicodemus asked. \u201cSurely they cannot enter a second time into their mother\u2019s womb to be born!\u201d<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus answered,\u00a0\u201cVery truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here we see the common ground between Joseph and Nicodemus. Joseph \u201cwas waiting for the kingdom of God,\u201d and Nicodemus, through his conversation with Jesus, came to know of being born again, and to \u201csee the kingdom of God and enter it.\u201d They shared the same desire and understanding regarding \u201cthe kingdom of God.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At first, neither of them understood what the kingdom of God was. However, through what they saw and heard directly from Jesus Christ, or through what they heard about what Jesus said and did through others, their eyes were opened to the value of living in the kingdom of God.<\/p>\n<p>So what kind of kingdom is \u201cthe kingdom of God\u201d that Jesus Christ preached? The phrase \u201cthe kingdom of God\u201d was included in the very first words Jesus spoke when He began His ministry.<\/p>\n<p>Mark 1:15<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe\u00a0the good news!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jesus said that this kingdom of God has come near to us through His coming into this world. Jesus told a parable, saying that the kingdom of God is like a mustard seed and yeast.<\/p>\n<p>Luke 13:18-21<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>Then Jesus asked,\u00a0\u201cWhat is the kingdom of God\u00a0like?\u00a0What shall I compare it to?\u00a0<sup>19\u00a0<\/sup>It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his garden. It grew and became a tree,\u00a0and the birds perched in its branches.\u201d <sup>20\u00a0<\/sup>Again he asked,\u00a0\u201cWhat shall I compare the kingdom of God to?\u00a0<sup>21\u00a0<\/sup>It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds\u00a0of flour until it worked all through the dough.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jesus said that the kingdom of God begins small, but it will eventually become large. And regarding where the kingdom of God is, Jesus left clear words.<\/p>\n<p>Luke 17:20-21<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>20\u00a0<\/sup>Once, on being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come,\u00a0Jesus replied,\u00a0\u201cThe coming of the kingdom of God is not something that can be observed,\u00a0<sup>21\u00a0<\/sup>nor will people say, \u2018Here it is,\u2019 or \u2018There it is,\u2019\u00a0because the kingdom of God is in your midst.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This statement made clear that the kingdom of God does not refer to a place with specific borders, nor is it an organized group of people. Jesus said that the kingdom of God does not refer only to the world after death, but signifies God\u2019s reign that has already begun in this world, right in our midst.<\/p>\n<p>I have heard this kind of story several times before. Some men think church is \u201ca place for women and children.\u201d Such men think to themselves every time their wives go to church, return home, and affectionately call out \u201cJesus\u201d by name. \u201cJesus is a man, right? Every day I hear \u2018Jesus, Jesus,\u2019 putting him before the husband. Is Jesus more attractive and dependable than me?\u201d \u201cEvery time you open your mouth, it\u2019s all \u2018Jesus, Jesus\u2019\u2014who would listen to such talk about Jesus!\u201d Jesus Christ was indeed a man. But He is not our rival, nor is He an object of envy. We cannot be His rivals, and He is not someone we can compare ourselves to.<\/p>\n<p>I believe both Joseph and Nicodemus knew the Scriptures well. And they were men.At that time, only men could become members of the Sanhedrin. Being chosen from among many men to serve as a representative of the people must have been no small matter for them, but rather an honor.<\/p>\n<p>They must have gained a certain reputation and fame. People held them in high regard. From a human perspective, they received social respect and possessed considerable wealth, so we would think, what more could they possibly need?<\/p>\n<p>Even for them, the name \u201cJesus\u201d\u2014one often heard in the streets\u2014caught their attention. They must have actually seen Jesus in the streets, met Him in person, and spoken with Him. Eventually, they could no longer ignore Jesus Christ. Because they realized \u201cThis Man possesses something I lack.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At first, they approached Jesus while keeping their distance, seeking to secure their own positions. Their hearts were always torn between two things at that time.\u305d\u308c\u306fThat is, \u201cthis world\u201d or \u201cthe kingdom of God.\u201d Seeing Jesus Christ, hearing His words, they pondered these two things in their hearts. And in their hearts, Jesus Christ came to occupy a significant place.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and the Kingdom of God is embodied in all His words and deeds. Every time they saw Jesus Christ, they saw there a \u201clove of God\u201d that transcended human understanding. That love was expressed through various ways upon Jesus.It was a way of love they had never seen or heard of before. And when they looked upon Jesus Christ, they always saw not only love, but also the \u201crighteousness of God.\u201d Jesus did not cling solely to love, but clearly and fearlessly asserted the \u201crighteousness of God\u201d in a way that made listeners feel uneasy.<\/p>\n<p>They heard Jesus\u2019 love and righteous words and deeds, sometimes witnessed them, pondered them, and finally came to understand. Living in the kingdom of God, where God\u2019s love and righteousness reign, as Jesus says, means even if you lose what you have gained, it is still something worth pursuing. Yes, that is exactly what Jesus said.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew 13:44-46<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>44\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cThe kingdom of heaven is like\u00a0treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. <sup>45\u00a0<\/sup>Again, the kingdom of heaven is like\u00a0a merchant looking for fine pearls.\u00a0<sup>46\u00a0<\/sup>When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And their first act demonstrating this commitment was directed toward the body of Jesus, who died on the cross.<\/p>\n<p>John 19:38-39<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>38 <\/sup>Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Joseph summoned his courage and told Pilate he wished to take Jesus\u2019 body, knowing full well he might lose his status. Nicodemus, sharing Joseph\u2019s resolve, with full awareness of the consequences, brought a large quantity of myrrh and aloes mixed together to anoint Jesus\u2019 body. It is because they found value in living for \u201cthe kingdom of God\u201d, and not for \u201cthis world\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Paul once summed up the most important thing in the relationship between husband and wife in a single line.<\/p>\n<p>Ephesians 5:33<\/p>\n<p><strong>However, each one of you also must love his wife\u00a0as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Regarding the nature of marriage, I have never encountered words more apt than these. A wife seeks to be deeply loved by her husband. And a husband seeks to be respected by his wife. If this relationship exists between a husband and wife, I believe that couple will surely succeed.<\/p>\n<p>Men always expect and demand respect from others.\u3002When a man receives this respect, his heart finds stability and he gains confidence. Respect is a man\u2019s greatest reward and his reason for living. However, when that respect is not earned, a man\u2019s spirit becomes disheartened, he withdraws inward, and sometimes becomes self-destructive.<\/p>\n<p>In Japan, there is a famous movie called \u201cIt\u2019s Tough Being a Man,\u201d featuring the character Tora-san. \u201cBeing a man is tough\u201d Why? It is difficult to receive the respect you desperately crave. Why? Because respect is not something we receive for free; it is others\u2019 response to our words and actions.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus Christ lost all respect on the cross. Jesus was reviled, spat upon, flogged, and crucified without a fair trial. He was displayed on the cross in a state of near-nakedness, enduring humiliation. There was not a shred of respect for Jesus Christ there.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus lost all the respect He deserved as the Son of God for our sake. However, by doing so, He gained respect that has never been lost for the past 2000 years. Through the cross, Jesus became the substitute for all human sin and bore its punishment.<\/p>\n<p>Herein lies God\u2019s perfect righteousness in response to human sin. And Jesus\u2019 substitutionary death for us proved God\u2019s perfect love. Brothers and sisters in the Lord, there is something we can learn from this. He is no longer the sort of man we should be competing with.<\/p>\n<p>He possesses everything we should follow and learn from. If we desire to earn the respect of our wives and children, we should learn from this Jesus Christ. We learn God\u2019s love and God\u2019s righteousness from Jesus Christ. We learn how to love others, and what is good and evil before God. Dear brothers and sisters in the Lord, is this not precisely what is required of us as husbands and fathers?<\/p>\n<p>When we read about the Lord Jesus in the Bible, we come to understand that He possesses every virtue we ought to have.\u3000Let us follow Him and learn from Him. While living in this society, let us learn from Jesus and spread the dominion of God\u2019s kingdom as the light of the world and the salt of the earth.<\/p>\n<p>Let us build the kingdom of God that He pointed to and live there. This means we are involved in God\u2019s grand project. When we hear the phrase \u201cgrand project,\u201d we tend to shy away, but there\u2019s no need. What we should do is live faithfully with the Lord, day by day, step by step. Our \u201clife\u201d is the culmination of each day piled upon the next. Jesus clearly spoke about the reward that comes from living each day seeking this.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew 6:33, 34<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>33\u00a0<\/sup>But seek first his kingdom\u00a0and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.\u00a0<sup>34\u00a0<\/sup>Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If we live today seeking the kingdom of God and His righteousness, the Lord tells us not to worry about tomorrow. In this chaotic world, what do you rely on as your foundation, and what do you consider the standard by which you should live? Who will we look up to as a role model as we move forward in life?<\/p>\n<p>Joseph and Nicodemus weighed what they had cherished until then against what the Lord Jesus Christ promised them for the rest of their lives. And they chose to live with Jesus. And that became the most important decision of their lives.<\/p>\n<p>When we become disciples of Christ, when we live in the kingdom of God that Christ spoke of, our lives are transformed.
