The Bible consists of the Old Testament and the New Testament. To put it simply, the Old Testament consists of books written before the birth of Jesus Christ, describing the relationship between Israel and God. And the New Testament records events following the birth of Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n
The first four books of the New Testament\u2014Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John\u2014are called the Gospels. These four books record the words and deeds of Jesus Christ during His life. These four Gospels bear the names of their respective authors as their titles, reflecting the individual character of each writer.<\/p>\n
The Gospel of Matthew was written primarily for the Jews, emphasizing that Jesus Christ is the Messiah who fulfilled the prophecies of the Old Testament. The Gospel of Mark is the oldest, written for the Romans and Gentiles (in this context, Gentiles refer to people other than Jews), and is written concisely and succinctly. The Gospel of John was written with all people in mind, reflecting the author John\u2019s profound spiritual insight. And the Gospel of Luke records events clearly, in order, and in detail for the Gentiles.<\/p>\n
Today, we will look at the man named Luke who wrote this Gospel of Luke. This Luke was not one of the twelve disciples of Jesus Christ. In Colossians 4:14, Paul refers to Luke as \u201cthe beloved physician.\u201d Yes, it seems that he was a doctor.<\/p>\n
There are many different occupations in this world, and when you continue in one for a long time, that work reflects in your way of life and manifests itself in your daily living. After years on the police force, even when sitting in a cafe on their day off, a cop\u2019s eyes will still be drawn to people\u2019s movements.\u3002Those who work in landscaping can\u2019t help but notice the trees lining the roadside and start thinking about how they should be pruned.<\/p>\n
It is unclear how advanced medicine was at that time or what treatments were being administered, but Luke is thought to have written his Gospel while possessing the characteristics of a physician.\u3002He began the book with these words.<\/p>\n
Luke 1:1-4<\/p>\n
1\u00a0<\/sup>Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled\u00a0among us,\u00a02\u00a0<\/sup>just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first\u00a0were eyewitnesses\u00a0and servants of the word.\u00a03\u00a0<\/sup>With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account\u00a0for you, most excellent\u00a0Theophilus,\u00a04\u00a0<\/sup>so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.<\/strong><\/p>\nHe addressed the opening words to Theophilus. Theophilus is said to have been a high-ranking Roman official or nobleman in Jewish society at the time. Since Theophilus was not a Jew, he likely had neither faith in nor knowledge of the things recorded in the Old Testament. To Theophilus, a Gentile with no prior knowledge of these matters, Luke did not ask him to \u201cbelieve what I am about to write,\u201d but instead presented the actual events in chronological order.<\/p>\n
Here we see the character of Luke, who was a physician. What is required of a doctor is to calmly and objectively observe the patient\u2019s body. Doctors do not become emotional about the illnesses their patients suffer from, nor do they speak of delusions. Based on facts, they calmly document the symptoms and continue to examine the person to facilitate their healing and recovery. They objectively identify the sequence of events through which that disease came to affect our bodies. Luke wrote this Gospel of Luke with that mindset.<\/p>\n
In other words, Luke addresses us, saying, \u201cI know these facts, but how will you receive them?\u201d Furthermore, Luke recorded things not written in the other three Gospels.\u4f8b\u3048\u3070\u3001He found special meaning in these things and decided they should be recorded for posterity. For example:<\/p>\n
Luke 19:1-10: The Encounter Between Zacchaeus the Tax Collector and Jesus. And the Parable of the Prodigal Son, spoken by Jesus and recorded in Luke 15:11-32. The words spoken by Jesus to the criminal on the cross, as recorded in Luke 23:39\u201343.<\/p>\n
What common things do you think these share which only Luke recorded? It is that the people who appear here were those who were given a second chance in life.<\/p>\n
The prodigal son abandoned his father and home in an unjust manner, went off to live a life of debauchery wherever he went, lost all his wealth, and returned home in a pitiful state. Considering what he did, there is no reason for the father to welcome him back home. But the father took an astonishing action toward his son.<\/p>\n
Luke 15:20<\/p>\n
\u201cBut while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\nThe father welcomed him home, dressed him in the finest robe, slaughtered a fattened calf, and held a feast, rejoicing that he had returned. And so the prodigal son began his new life.<\/p>\n
Zacchaeus was a Jew who had become a servant of the Roman Empire, one of those who collected taxes from their fellow countrymen to enrich themselves. Therefore, there were none in Jewish society who were more despised and shunned than they. They knew what they were doing was wrong, yet they couldn\u2019t find a way to start living right again.<\/p>\n

At that time, he climbed a tree to see Jesus passing by in front of him. But Jesus came to the tree where Zacchaeus was and looked up at him and said:<\/p>\n
Luke 19:5<\/p>\n
\u201cZacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\nAfter this, Zacchaeus promised Jesus, \u201cI will give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will repay them four times over.\u201d And so Zacchaeus put an end to his old way of life and began living a new life.<\/p>\n
The criminal crucified beside Jesus had only a few hours left to live. He was about to die, having received punishment for the crime he had committed. He had no time left to change his ways and start a new life. But to him, Jesus said:<\/p>\n
Luke 23:43<\/p>\n
\u201cTruly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\nThey were all given another chance to live a new life with God. As for the last criminal, he was enabled to live eternally with the Lord. Only Luke the physician recorded these things. Why?<\/p>\n
A doctor\u2019s mission is to heal the illness of the patient before them, restore their health, and preserve their life. Therefore, if there is even the slightest possibility, they will devote their utmost efforts to saving lives. Luke directed the passion he had been directing toward the \u201cbody\u201d toward the \u201chuman soul\u201d as well.<\/p>\n
From a human perspective, one might think this person is beyond help, that it is all over for them.\u3002But Luke focused on the heart of God, who reaches out His saving hand to such people. By writing these things down for us, Luke is conveying God\u2019s heart to us. \u201cIt is not too late for you. Your life is not over yet.\u201d<\/p>\n
Furthermore, Luke recorded the parable of \u201cthe rich man and Lazarus\u201d (Luke 16:19-31) that Jesus told. This is another parable recorded only by Luke.<\/p>\n
19\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cThere was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day.\u00a020\u00a0<\/sup>At his gate was laid a beggar\u00a0named Lazarus, covered with sores\u00a021\u00a0<\/sup>and longing to eat what fell from the rich man\u2019s table.\u00a0Even the dogs came and licked his sores. 22\u00a0<\/sup>The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham\u2019s side. The rich man also died and was buried.\u00a023\u00a0<\/sup>In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\nThe difference between the \u201crich man\u201d and \u201cpoor Lazarus\u201d is clear to our eyes. Their lifestyles are plainly different. And the rich man went down to Hades, where the flames were burning. When he looked up, he saw Lazarus with Abraham.<\/p>\n
Many patients must have been seen by Luke. Differences in skin color, language spoken, or wealth do not alter our physical bodies. All people are given bodies with the same functions by God.<\/p>\n
Brad Pitt has two eyes, one heart, and a total of twenty digits on his hands and feet. I have two eyes, one heart, and a total of twenty digits on my hands and feet. There is no significant difference in functionality.<\/p>\n
It is just that the balance in which those organs are placed is slightly different; what we are given is the same. Luke was able to see the human body from the same perspective as God. Whether king or beggar, the body is the same. There is no difference or superiority there.<\/p>\n
Luke, being a physician, knew even more. Whether rich or poor, the day will inevitably come when the functions of the body cease. That was something Luke witnessed on a daily basis. And he knew that his role as a doctor ended when that person died. However, he came to know through the life and words of Jesus. We do not end with death. From there, everything begins . . .<\/p>\n
Luke also recorded the parable Jesus told about \u201cthe Pharisee and the tax collector who came to the temple to pray\u201d (Luke 18:9-14).This too was recorded only by Luke. The Pharisee prayed like this (verses 11 and 12):<\/p>\n
\u2018God, I thank you that I am not like other people\u2014robbers, evildoers, adulterers\u2014or even like this tax collector.\u00a012\u00a0<\/sup>I fast\u00a0twice a week and give a tenth\u00a0of all I get.\u2019<\/p>\nIn contrast, the tax collector stood far off, not even daring to lift his eyes to heaven, but beating his breast he said (verse 13):<\/p>\n
\u2018God, have mercy on me, a sinner.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\nThe Pharisees\u2019 work was to study and teach about God, and to pray, day and night. They were religious experts. The expert and the tax collector came to the temple to pray. People who saw them could tell the \u201cPharisee\u201d from the \u201ctax collector\u201d by their appearance. Those who saw the two of them must have seen them both praying before God.<\/p>\n
But no one could know what lay within their hearts. Only the person themselves and God knows that heart. The Pharisee boasted about what he was doing and thanked God that he was not a tax collector. The tax collector could not even lift his face, but beat his breast and prayed to God as if clinging to Him. \u201cGod, have mercy on me, a sinner.\u201d<\/p>\n
One day, upon hearing this parable, I felt the blood drain from my face. There may be people here who have been coming to church for forty years. That person may be regarded as a devout believer by both themselves and others. But what if, for forty years, they had kept coming to church while harboring only this Pharisaical mindset\u2014the conviction that they alone were truly right? Regarding these two, Jesus clearly said this (verse 14):<\/p>\n
\u201cI tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.\u201d<\/p>\n
If, during those forty years, \u201cWe returned home each week without being justified by God, but merely with our self-satisfaction.\u201d Everyone, doesn\u2019t this terrify you? What on earth were our forty years all about?<\/p>\n
Luke was an expert in observing the physical body. He knew that body would decay.\u5f7c\u306f\u3002He knew that not only our bodies, but also the clothing and adornments that cover them, would one day be lost entirely. Yes, everything visible will be lost.Therefore, he focused on God\u2019s perspective. Luke speaks to us.<\/p>\n
Your status or appearance does not define you. How is your heart directed toward God. God continually looks at our hearts. All sorts of things happen in our lives. God gives us many joys and pleasures. We wish that joy and pleasure could last forever. But we know. Just as we experience joy and pleasure, we must also face trials and disappointments.<\/p>\n
It is as if we are calling these \u201clife\u2019s setbacks.\u201d Is anyone feeling this \u201clife\u2019s setback\u201d \u00a0right now? This world, your family, your friends might say. \u201cYou are done for.\u201dIs there anyone out there who, having received that final notice, is living as if the rest of their life is already over?<\/p>\n
When we feel unwell, seeking the opinions of multiple doctors is called seeking a second opinion. Luke was a doctor. He offered second opinions to those who had been told, \u201cIt is too late\u201d or \u201cThere is no cure.\u201d<\/p>\n
This person still has the chance to live life anew. Luke tells us that this is God\u2019s message to us. Your life is not over yet. You can still start over. I will say it again. Your life is not over yet! You can still start over!<\/p>\n
Let us recall the prodigal son, Zacchaeus, and the criminal who was dying. Until the very moment you draw your last breath, God gives you a chance. That is the heartfelt desire of Luke the physician, who spoke of God\u2019s desire that you should live.<\/p>\n
You may find that the second opinion you get from a doctor at the hospital is the same as the first opinion you received, and nothing changes. However, this second opinion that Jesus Christ speaks to us is different from what the world tells us. For 2000 years, countless people have regained their lives through this second opinion from Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n
If you open your heart and listen to the words of Jesus, you will surely find hope there. And if we can live this life anew with fresh opportunities, let us focus our hearts on living for God. It is not difficult. It is not an obligation.<\/p>\n
On the day that prodigal son returned home, the feast his father held must have lasted late into the night. So, do you think that prodigal son slept until noon the next morning? What time did he get up? Do not look at the Bible. Because this is not written in the Bible.<\/p>\n
We imagine. He woke up early in the morning. He worked hard for his father early in the morning, wanting to see the joy on his father\u2019s face for giving him a second chance. It was not out of a sense of duty; he simply wanted to do so. Because he knew how much his father had done for him. Dear people in the Lord, this is the true Christian life.<\/p>\n
This is the source of the power that will drive our lives forward from now on. We live in response to God\u2019s amazing grace. The prodigal son, before God, had finally embarked on the path of life that a person should live.<\/p>\n
Dear people in the Lord, shall we also embark on this path of life together? It means living a life that responds to God\u2019s love and grace. When we live in that moment, we truly come to know how wonderful life is.<\/p>\n
