align=\"center\">Christmas for The Japanese<br \/>\nDecember 15, 2013<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">God of presence<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Recently I read an interview with a prominent religious scholar which caught my attention. The subject was on the mind and spirituality of the Japanese people and our spirituality as Japanese is said to be determined by our feeling or not feeling the \u201cpresence of the gods\u201d. For example, if we were to go deep into a forest we may feel some kind of presence, perhaps some will perceive it as being their ancestors or the Buddha or the gods, and when something bad occurs, some may concluded that it is a curse from the gods or the spirits of the dead because they feel some presence.<\/p>\n<p>In Japan, during the summer there are many programs on prime time television that documents a TV personality going to a haunted hospital or school and these personalities will say something like \u201cI can feel a presence, we shouldn&#8217;t go any further than this&#8230;\u201d and we Japanese love this kind of program.<\/p>\n<p>First of all why do we feel the presence of some greater power than us? Why do tens of thousands of Japanese people put their hands together before the first sunrise of a new year? This phenomenon is seen not only among the Japanese, but is common to all races, although we have not been taught to have this kind of spirituality. Where ever we go in the world we see images carved in wood and stone<\/p>\n<p>which people use as objects of worship.<\/p>\n<p>In the book of Genesis we see how God created the heavens and the earth and all the different kinds creatures, and the at the last part of the Creation narrative describes how the first man Adam was created: \u201c7 Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.\u201d (Genesis 2:7)<\/p>\n<p>According to Genesis, all the other creatures have not been \u201cbreathed into\u201d, but only the first man Adam received God&#8217;s breath and thus \u201cthe man became a living being\u201d. In Japan, when a student is under the tutelage of a professor he is described as having the professor&#8217;s breath on him. The meaning of this phrase is that the professor&#8217;s way of thinking and lifestyle is being passed down to the student.<\/p>\n<p>We see the symbolic account of the creation of man in Genesis, and God has clearly made His mark on us humans who have the breath of God within us. We cannot find any mark on our body which says MBG, or Made by God, but it is clear that God has engraved His mark on our hearts. So although we are not always conscious of our spiritual nature most of the time, when we perceive something greater than us, perhaps in nature(this may be a great big tree or a majestic white snake), even though we are living in a very logical and scientifically advanced modern society, we still worship and put our hands together before these things.<\/p>\n<p>It is important to feel. It is important to be sensitive to our emotions. When one meets his or her life partner for example they may feel something click within them and this kind of intuition is important. But there aren&#8217;t too many of us who decided to marry someone just by that one click. We wouldn&#8217;t just go up to someone we met for the first time and say \u201cPlease marry me, I just felt something click within me\u201d and most would not take it seriously if they were to be proposed this way. Why wouldn&#8217;t this work? It is because despite that click, that feeling, that person still does not <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">know anything<\/span> about the other person.<\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of a new marriage most couples would not say to each other \u201clets not speak but instead feel each others&#8217; presence\u201d. If the wife says \u201cmy husband is busy now, I can feel it in the air\u201d or the husband says \u201cI am worried, I cannot feel my wife&#8217;s presence today\u201d a marriage would not work out. The married couple aren&#8217;t ghosts. If there is no communication between the couple it will be a very difficult marriage. This is because they have no idea what the other is thinking. So then what is necessary for them to understand one another? The answer is \u201cwords\u201d. We use words to let each other know our own thoughts and emotions.<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Words<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p>We may say within ourselves \u201cI am hungry, someone would notice and fix me something to eat\u201d or \u201cI&#8217;m so downhearted, I hope someone gives me encouragement\u201d but there is no way for this to be perceived by anyone else. Why do our bodies have a mouth and ears? This is for us to speak words with our mouth and hear words with our ears.<\/p>\n<p>God knew from the beginning that we humans have a limited perception of His presence. He knew that He could not communicate His will toward us only through His presence. This is why from the beginning of Creation, God used His words to interact with this world and us humans. The verse that signifies this is seen in the very first page of the Bible: \u201c3 And God said, \u201cLet there be light,\u201d and there was light.\u201d (Genesis 1:3)<\/p>\n<p>In the beginning of the Bible, in the account of the Creation of heavens and earth we see the way in which God will relate to mankind. God created the entire heavens and the earth by His Word and by His Word He also established His relationship with us humans.<\/p>\n<p>As we all know words are very practical tools of expression. After this worship service when you go get some coffee, will you be able to tell what the person next in line is thinking? The answer is obviously no. They may be thinking \u201cwhat shall I eat for lunch\u201d or \u201coh no, we&#8217;re running out of coffee\u201d. There is no way for us to become completely aware of each others thoughts. This is the limit of our perception. But if they were to say aloud \u201cI want to go eat Chinese food\u201d or \u201cI gotta go get some more coffee\u201d we become aware of what that person is thinking.<\/p>\n<p>Our words reveal what is inside our hearts. And Christianity is something that speaks directly to us through the words written in the Bible. The reason why there are so many churches in this world today is because the Word of God is at the center of Christianity. If it was established only upon our feelings toward an unknown presence it may have become some kind of local folk religion but would have never grown any further. Jesus&#8217; beloved disciple John understood that the way in which God related to us was through His Word, and he wrote this in the beginning of his gospel:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.\u201d (John 1:1-5)<\/p>\n<p>When John wrote \u201cIn the beginning was the Word\u201d, he must have had in his mind the account of how God created the heaven and the earth through His word which I mentioned earlier.<\/p>\n<p>This thick book called the Bible is split into two sections, the Old Testament and the New Testament. In the Old Testament God never appeared in person before mankind. Instead He spoke to them through kings and prophets who received His words and delivered them to the people. Therefore God did not communicate His will through His presence but through tangible words. And as John recorded in His Word was life and His Word was the light of all mankind. His Word was to be the light that shines on our path.<\/p>\n<p>In those times the most prominent representation of the Word of God was the Torah or the Law. The Law stated what to do and what not to do, rules to be followed. Even today we have laws we have to follow and all of these are also recorded in words.<\/p>\n<p>The mountains or trees which may become objects of worship can not tell us how to live by giving us guidelines to follow. Guidelines become clear only when it is given through \u201cspecific words\u201d. In the Old Testament God told the people of Israel to obey His word and to never go beyond it so that they may live in happiness. He said that if they remain in His Word they will be protected and receive life and that His Word will be their light.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most significant representation of His Word was the Ten Commandments, which were ten rules that must be obeyed. When we receive these commandments we know what we must do and must not do. And we try to obey these. But what became clear after thousands of years is that we are incapable of keeping these commands because of our very nature as human beings. It&#8217;s no exaggeration to say that the Old Testament is the history of mankind&#8217;s inability to obey the Word of God. The apostle Paul wrote the following confession as if to represent the conflict we all have within our hearts:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. 18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do\u2014this I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.\u201d (Romans 7:15-20)<\/p>\n<p>God repeatedly spoke His Word to us humans. But we did not listen to God and followed the way that pleased us. On these paths were always confusion and destruction. This went on for thousands of years and then one day, God did the following. This happened in a small, inconspicuous town called Bethlehem. About this event, John who was mentioned earlier wrote the following words:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.\u201d (John 1:14)<\/p>\n<p>Luke gives us a more specific account of this event. He records how the angel spoke to the shepherds in the fields of Bethlehem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c10 But the angel said to them, \u201cDo not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.\u201d\u201d (Luke 2:10-12)<\/p>\n<p>Is there anything in this passage that is hard to understand? We can imagine the scene that is described here. This is because the event described here did not occur in heaven but on this very earth that we live in. As Luke recorded, the people who were there at that time did not <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">feel<\/span> the presence of the baby, but they actually <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">saw<\/span> the baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.<\/p>\n<p>God, who in the past made His presence know to man through a burning bush, out of a storm, and through the constellations, has taken the form of a human child whom we can actually see and touch.<\/p>\n<p>Now this is where most of you will start to think, \u201cHere it comes, now the preacher is going to start talking about Jesus Christ being born of the Virgin Mary, I can sense where he&#8217;s going with this, but God&#8217;s only begotten Son being born of a virgin is illogical, this is why I find it hard to believe the Bible&#8230;\u201d; if your are saying this to yourself, it is completely understandable. Let us then focus our attention to the following unexpected figure.<\/p>\n<p>Once in a while I listen to songs written by Masashi Sada(famous Japanese folk singer). Sada has a way of skillfully using the words of his songs to speak directly to the listener&#8217;s heart. There is one song by him with the very long title \u201cRomance Disorder:Observations of the Onset, Symptoms, and Measures Against This Disease\u201d. He describes the romance between a man and a woman as being a kind of illness and sings about the onset, symptoms, and measures to be taken for this illness. It is truly a song that only a singer like Sada can write.<i><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>The following are my observations<br \/>\nof the onset, symptoms, and measures to be taken against<br \/>\nthis hormonal disorder called romance,<br \/>\nregardless of age, sex, occupation, postal code<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Sada continues to describe each person&#8217;s symptoms according to their blood type(side note: there is a popular belief in Japan that a person&#8217;s blood type determines his or her personality).<i><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Blood type A: can&#8217;t accomplish anything without defiance,<br \/>\ngloomy and always sighing;<br \/>\nBlood type B: inconsiderate of others,<br \/>\nwill carelessly stomp through someone&#8217;s flower garden;<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Blood type AB: Has one opinion today but will have a different one tomorrow,<br \/>\neasily excited and easily bored;<br \/>\nBlood type O: Presuming that everything will work out for them,<br \/>\nare the only ones that are left and forgotten;<\/p>\n<p><i>Other symptoms include suddenly becoming very kind,<br \/>\nsuddenly turning into a poet,<br \/>\nhaving an inexplicable urge to eat at midnight,<br \/>\nsudden urge to scream at the ocean,<br \/>\nand in some cases young men start balding.<br \/>\nWe can say that romance is a sort of allergy<br \/>\nbecause of the abnormal reactions it causes in certain people<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>With rare exceptions when in love<br \/>\na man becomes more manly and a woman more feminine<br \/>\nIf one becomes obsessed with love testers<br \/>\nand compatibility questionnaires and the like, they have caught the disease<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>The lovers want to show<br \/>\ntheir good side to one another<br \/>\nand they become blind to each others shortcomings<br \/>\nthey eat, wear, see, and listen to the same things,<br \/>\nand everyday becomes their anniversary&#8230;<\/i><\/p>\n<p>When one falls in love, everyone around him sees him as a fool. Love makes him blind and he does foolish things like brush his teeth with shampoo or become obsessed with compatibility tests and become unaware of all of his lover&#8217;s shortcomings and he likes to eat, wear, see, and hear everything she likes and everyday is like their anniversary. Those around him can only say \u201clet him do as he wishes\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The phrase \u201clove is blind\u201d is a perfect description of what happens to a person when he or she falls in love. A person in love is a \u201cfool\u201d for those around them. They are considered \u201cfoolish\u201d. And this is not only for romance. A very common thing we see is the doting parent, or in Japanese \u201cfoolish parent\u201d. If we are still able to think logically we are not seriously in love. True love lead us into foolishness. The people around that person who is in love cannot stand to look on his or her foolishness. But the person in question is serious to the point of risking their life.<\/p>\n<p>Once I saw a report on CNN which told the story of Marine Lance Corporal David Battle, who in November 13, 2004, when he was 19-years-old, suffered a severe injury to his left hand and legs during a fire fight in Fallujah, Iraq. When he and his unit entered a building they came under attacked and Battle and eleven of his fellow marines wounded.<\/p>\n<p>The field surgeons were about to cut off his wedding ring to save his badly damaged finger. But at that moment he told them, &#8220;But that would mean destroying my wedding ring. My wife is the strongest woman I know. She&#8217;s basically running two people&#8217;s lives since I&#8217;ve been gone. I don&#8217;t think I could ever repay her or show her how grateful &#8230; how much I love my wife, my soul mate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As he requested the doctors amputated his finger. After receiving news of his husband, his wife Devon said, &#8220;I can&#8217;t believe he did that. At first I was mad when he told me, but then I realized how lucky I am to have him in my life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>When we hear this story, many of us would think \u201cwhy didn&#8217;t he just cut the ring off!\u201d. The ring could have been replaced. But his finger will never grow back. Some of you may think \u201cwhy did he do such a foolish thing!\u201d. When we love someone, we sometimes do things that are out of the ordinary.<\/p>\n<p>If we know that love can make us do crazy things at times and turn us into fools who act in unimaginable ways, if we know that this is what love does to us human beings, is it not possible for us to believe that God, who created the heavens and the earth, because He loves us so much, did the unexpected, something we never thought of, something hard to believe, and what appears to be so foolish, that the Word became flesh and descended into the womb of a virgin, can we not believe that God did such an extraordinary thing out of His love for us? If I may add another thing, this life was not a life created in a test tube by man, but it was a life which came from the source of all life, God Himself, who continues to bring new life into this world.<\/p>\n<p>The song by Sada closes with the following lines:<i><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>After a year or two it becomes clear<br \/>\nthat romance is but a struggle with illusions and misunderstandings<br \/>\nEventually we start to see each other as strangers<br \/>\ngrow tired and become silent when we are together<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>They say romance always disappears<br \/>\nbut I believe there are two patterns:<br \/>\none is when our hearts grow cold,<br \/>\nthe other when it changes into a thing called love<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Always desiring something is romance, to take away is romance,<br \/>\nLove continues to give, love never changes<br \/>\nAll I hope to do is to continue<br \/>\nto give you all I have<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Sada said his song,<br \/>\n<i>They say romance always disappears<br \/>\nbut I believe there are two patterns:<br \/>\none is when our hearts grow cold,<br \/>\nthe other when it changes into a thing called love<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>They say feelings always disappear<br \/>\nbut I believe there are two patterns:<br \/>\none is when the heart grows cold,<br \/>\nthe other when it changes into a Word<br \/>\nand when that Word dwells among us<br \/>\nwhen a feeling becomes a word and turns into Love<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><\/i><i>Always desiring something is romance, to take away is romance,<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i> Love continues to give, love never changes<br \/>\nAll I hope to do is to continue<br \/>\nto give you all I have<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Beyond feelings, beyond words, this love which hopes to give you everything; to show us His love, God gave us all He had, by giving us His only Son, Jesus Christ, whom He laid in that lowly manger.<\/p>\n<p>If we were to put our hands together before the sun or the trees, it is because we feel the presence of someone who is behind all these things. Please don&#8217;t disregard that feeling. But at the same time, please know that that someone is speaking to you personally through the words of the Bible. There is a limit to what we can feel. And above all, I want you to know that this someone loves you so much, that He did something that we can never understand, something we never thought of, something we can&#8217;t even imagine, two thousand years ago He did for us the unexpected. My hope is that this unthinkable love that was shown to us by God, when He gave everything He had to us on Christmas Day, that each one of you here today will have this love at the center of your
