There is such a thing called concentrated fruit juice. It is juice composed of condensed nutrition and the flavor of the fruit. Similarly, the \u201cApostles Creed\u201d we recited this morning is condensed words of the Christian faith; which is only composed with words we really need. This Apostles Creed contains everything we believe and stand upon<\/strong>. Now let us look at a few things.<\/p>\nWe have been looking at the Apostles Creed. \u201cI believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\nWhen we read the creed up to this point, it seems as if Jesus Christ\u2019s mission has been completed entirely. In other words, we tend to think that there\u2019s nothing more Christ can do because \u201cChristmas\u201d \u201cGood Friday\u201d and \u201cEaster\u201d which we are familiar with is already written here.<\/p>\n
But in fact, the Bible does not end here. There\u2019s more to it. That is why the Apostles Creed contains the words, \u201cHe ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.<\/strong>\u201d Earlier I said that the Apostles Creed is the result of condensing the Bible, meaning, to keep only what is most important, and as it was most important, the words, \u201cJesus Christ ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father\u201d were kept in the Apostles Creed. Today I\u2019d like to talk about two reasons for the importance of Jesus ascending into heaven and sitting at the right hand of the Father. The fist point is, \u201cTo send us a helper.\u201d<\/p>\nTo Send Us a Helper<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n Luke, who wrote Jesus\u2019 demeanor in \u201cthe Book of Luke\u201d marks the end of the book with these words: \u201c50 And He led them out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them. 51 Now it came to pass, while He blessed them, that He was parted from them and carried up into heaven<\/span>. 52 And they worshiped Him<\/span>, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, 53 and were continually in the temple praising and blessing God.<\/strong>\u201d (Luke 24:50-53)<\/p>\nThese words document that Jesus was crucified then ascended into heaven as he was resurrected. <\/p>\n
As we say, if it ends well, all is well, yay happy ending, Jesus\u2019 ending seems like a happy one because according to this passage, His disciples saw He was carried up into heaven, therefore returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the temple praising and blessing God. It says Jesus blessed his disciples and they saw Jesus being carried up into heaven, so I would think that they should just live their life with the surprise and delight as an initiator. Luke put his pen down when he finished the Book of Luke, but took in hand his pen once again to write \u201cActs.\u201d Here, it talks about what I read earlier in Luke, but in more detail.<\/p>\n
6 Therefore, when they had come together, they asked Him, saying, \u201cLord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?\u201d 7 And He said to them, \u201cIt is not for you to know times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority. 8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.\u201d 9 Now when He had spoken these things, while they watched, He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight. 10 And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, 11 who also said, \u201cMen of Galilee, why do you stand gazing up into heaven? This same Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will so come in like manner as you saw Him go into heaven.\u201d <\/strong>(Acts 1:6-11)<\/p>\nLuke must have noticed one thing as he learned these things. Yes, Jesus is no longer before us because He has ascended into heaven. However, the work of Christ doesn\u2019t end here. As witnesses we are to tell our local and regional people these things Jesus has said and done, even to the end of the earth. And as the angle said, as Jesus ascended, he will come in like manner once again. Jesus ascending into heaven was not the end, but undoubtedly the beginning.<\/p>\n
As proof, Luke records the post ascension of Jesus as the book of Acts. However, of all things, why does Jesus disappear before his disciples in a time where He is about to do something new?<\/p>\n
The CEO of the computer company \u201cApple\u201d is Steve Jobs. He temporarily left his job due to a serious illness. At the same time the stock prices became unstable. However, once he restores his health the stocks recovers as well. Even a human leader can create such a situation, so it must have been really bad when Jesus disappeared before his disciples.<\/p>\n
Actually, the disappearance of Jesus himself was already told directly by Jesus to his disciples a few times. It says in John 16:7-8, 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.<\/strong><\/p>\nHere Jesus says that going away will be an advantage to us. It\u2019s because going away means \u201ca Helper\u201d will be sent instead. The Bible calls this helper the \u201cHoly Spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n
And as we read earlier about the Holy Spirit, Jesus says right before his ascension to heaven, \u201cBut you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you<\/span>; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth\u201d <\/strong>(Acts 1:8).<\/p>\nThe fact that Jesus is with his disciples is very fascinating. However, the meaning to this is that Jesus\u2019 existence is limited to a group of people in a specific geographical region. To become witnesses of Jesus, exceeding the limits of Jerusalem to Judea and the lands of Samaria, and to the end of the earth, the power from above, in other words, the power of the Holy Spirit which has no limit of time or place is a necessity. The Holy Spirit is without these restrictions and is always with us.<\/p>\n
As I told you earlier, the Book of Acts is written by Luke and is sometimes called, \u201cthe story of the Holy Spirit\u201d in Japanese. This name is totally suitable for this book. Why, because Acts is filled with \u201cvarious works.\u201d These works were done through the evangelism of disciples and apostles. The first church was born, people gathered in the church, the church was formed, and eventually went beyond Judea and Samaria, and as Jesus said, spread throughout the world. At a glance, this seems like the work of man, but the work of the Holy Spirit is actually behind all this; this is the Book of Acts.<\/p>\n
The word, \u201cHelper\u201d which refers to the Holy Spirit is called \u201cParaclete\u201d in Greek, which means \u201csomeone who helps beside you.\u201d The Holy Spirit is not only pushing forward in the work of evangelism, it also helps us by being by our side always. Although Jesus is not around us in a visible form, Christ is with us through the Holy Spirit at all times.<\/p>\n
Let us become aware of this work of the Holy Spirit. Let us believe that the Holy Spirit is at work in our daily lives and at church, because Jesus Christ ascended into heaven to send us the Holy Spirit. The second point to the importance of Jesus ascending into heaven and sitting at the right hand of the Father is that \u201cHe intercedes for us.\u201d<\/p>\n
He intercedes for us<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\nWe\u2019ve read this passage last week, but let us take a look at Romans 8:31-39.<\/p>\n
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? 33 Who shall bring a charge against God\u2019s elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.<\/span> 35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written: \u201cFor Your sake we are killed all day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.\u201d 37 Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. 38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\nWhat we get from this is that Jesus returned to heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. However, He is not just sitting there. There, Jesus intercedes to God for us even now.<\/p>\n
Regarding \u201cJesus sitting at the right hand of the Father,\u201d one theologian says that, in the Apostles Creed, the question is not the place Jesus Christ is, but the role, in other words, the duty of Jesus Christ. I too agree to this.<\/p>\n
The word \u201cintercede\u201d is a very Japanese word. This word means \u201cpeacemaker\u201d or \u201cmediator.\u201d In other words, Jesus sits at the right hand of the Father, and He, as the one who is between God and us, and as the one who meets God\u2019s standards, prays for us so that we may live our daily lives on this earth while we face many things.<\/p>\n
Sometimes we say \u201cdon\u2019t carry troubles alone,\u201d but Jesus, as the one who sits at the right hand of God, is being an intercessor to God the Father for us, regarding our problems, troubles, failures and prayers. This is the reason why Paul says in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us, regardless of facing trials such as tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, peril, or sword and being killed all day long; and being accounted as sheep for the slaughter.<\/p>\n
Each week we raise prayer requests and pray at our Early Morning prayer meetings, and Wednesday and Thursday gatherings. In which case, most of the prayers are directed towards other people. We pray saying, \u201cmay his\/her be healed\u201d or \u201cmay he\/she be free from certain situation.\u201d Jesus Christ too, prays those prayers at the right hand of the Father. And this prayer is not only limited to when He is in heaven, but did not change even when Jesus was on earth.<\/p>\n
Luke 22 records Jesus and Peter\u2019s conversation right before the crucifiction. This was before Peter denies Jesus, and Jesus who knew this in advance tells Peter, \u201cSimon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.\u201d<\/strong> (Luke 22:31)<\/p>\nJesus prays for Peter who is about to betray Jesus himself, that Peter\u2019s faith may not fail. After this, Peter does indeed sift, causing a failure that cannot be atoned for, yet, Jesus says when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren. And as Jesus said, Peter does really fail, but becomes an encouraging existence to his brethren.<\/p>\n
This does not only apply to Peter, but Jesus prays for each and every one of us at the right hand of God even at this moment. Jesus prays for all of us, even for those who do not yet have faith, those who might have little faith, and for those who previously had faith, but have lost it. Not only does He pray, but once we have returned to Him, He tells us to make use of our failures and lack of faith to encourage our brothers and sisters around us.<\/p>\n
Stephen is mentioned in Acts as a key person of the first generation church. He was \u201ca man full of faith and the Holy Spirit\u201d (Acts 6:5) who at the end is stoned as a martyr because he argued that Jesus is Christ, the Son of God. Why was he stoned? Luke records it as follows:<\/p>\n
54 When they heard these things they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth. 55 But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, 56 and said, \u201cLook! I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!\u201d 57 Then they cried out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and ran at him with one accord; 58 and they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their clothes at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59 And they stoned Stephen as he was calling on God and saying, \u201cLord, Jesus, receive my spirit.\u201d 60 Then he knelt down and cried out with a loud voice, \u201cLord, do not charge them with this sin.\u201d And when he had said this, he fell asleep. <\/strong>(Acts 7:54-60)<\/p>\nWhat did the people hear that made them furious from the bottom of their heart and gnash their teeth at Stephen? Although we will not open the passage today, he talks about the Jewish history starting at Abraham, and that all that laid the foundation for Jesus Christ to come. And he refutes those who have hardened their hearts even after hearing this history.<\/p>\n
Right when those furious people ran towards Stephen, he is filled with the Holy Spirit, and when he looks into the heavens, he says he saw Jesus Christ standing at the right hand of God. And when he said this aloud, \u201cLook! I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!<\/strong>\u201d those who were against him ran towards him a stoned him to death.<\/p>\nStephen was surrounded by people who were furious and gnashed their teeth. He was certainly in a situation of crisis. However, in a time like this, he looked up into the heavens. Then the heavens opened and he saw Jesus standing at the right hand of God. Jesus was not sitting but standing. Jesus who had mediated as he sat at the right hand of God must have stood up and mediated as he saw Stephen in such a situation.<\/p>\n
There are times when we too are driven in a corner and placed critical situations. However, at such times, our Lord in heaven stands up, as He did with Stephen, and prays for us so we may not lose faith and so that we may overcome that crisis. We may not see Jesus do so, but if we were allowed to see the heavens open and see beyond it, as Stephen directly saw, we will be able to see Jesus who mediates for us. <\/p>\n
When Stephen saw Jesus mediating for himself, although he was being stoned, he was no longer in the same place as the others. Stephen prayed for those who were stoning him saying, \u201cLord, do not charge them with this sin.<\/strong>\u201d After praying this, he goes home to God.<\/p>\nWe may engrave in our hearts, the words in the Apostles Creed like, \u201cHe was born of the Virgin Mary\u201d and \u201cHe suffered under Pontius Pilate, and was crucified\u201d because they were significant events in Jesus\u2019 life. Compared to those, the words, \u201cHe ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father\u201d may be easily bypassed. However, no other words are more important to us than these words, for us who lives a life today, after Jesus ascended into heaven.<\/p>\n
Right after Jesus ascended into heaven, Peter gives his first long sermon. This was the sermon that brought three thousand to Christ in that one day. In his sermon, Peter promptly says, \u201cThis Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses. Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out this which you now see and hear<\/strong>\u201d (Acts 2:32-33).<\/p>\nStarting with Paul, Stephen and Peter, Jesus sitting and mediating at the right hand of God, and sending the Holy Spirit to us, was the most important thing for the disciples and apostles of the first generation church. Because of this faith, they were able to over come anything that came before them, and as Jesus said, after this, Christianity was spread through the ends of the earth.<\/p>\n
The exact same Holy Spirit I talk about here is also being poured on us. And our Lord Jesus Christ will and forever more sit at the right hand of God and mediate for us. Let us pray.<\/p>\n
