God Almighty
<\/span>In the Apostles\u2019 Creed we confess our faith by saying \u201cI believe in God, the Father Almighty.\u201d Almighty means having unlimited power. This is true indeed. If God created the sun, but did not have control over its movements and radiation, or created fish, but could not control its life cycles, we could not call him God Almighty. The Bible first states his omnipotence in Genesis 1:1 with the words \u201cIn the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.\u201d This is because these words form the major premise of our understanding of the Bible. These ten words encompass mankind\u2019s quest for truth from past to present.<\/p>\n

This is how Isaac Newton described himself as a scientist. He said, \u201cI do not know what I may appear to the world but to myself I seem to have been only like a boy playing on the seashore, and diverting myself in now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Right now we are gathered to give worship before this God. Jesus said, \u201cLook at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?\u201d (Matthew 6:26) \u201cAnd why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin.\u201d (Matthew 6:28)<\/p>\n

Every now and then we see someone feeding the pigeons at a park or watering the flowers in a garden, but these pigeons and flowers are not every bird and flower on earth. \u201cThe birds of the air\u201d and \u201cthe flowers of the field\u201d Jesus is saying here are the whole species of birds and flowers that exist on earth, and they do not sow or reap, nor do they labor or spin, but they are all being taken care of. Therefore the pelicans of Florida, the ostriches of Africa, and the hummingbirds that fly into our yards are all being fed by God.<\/p>\n

Needless to say, birds and flowers are not the only life forms on this planet. From mitochondria to whales, giant redwoods to mosses in a mountain stream, these are all in the hands of our God Almighty, and by him all life sustains. God\u2019s power is infinite, and what we humans can fathom is only a small portion of it.<\/p>\n

In one of the conversations with His disciples, Jesus spoke of God\u2019s omnipotence from another perspective. Let us read from Matthew 19:23-26.<\/p>\n

23<\/sup><\/strong> Then Jesus said to his disciples, \u201cTruly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24<\/sup><\/strong> Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.\u201d25<\/sup><\/strong> When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, \u201cWho then can be saved?\u201d 26<\/sup><\/strong> Jesus looked at them and said, \u201cWith man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Here He talks about \u201csomeone who is rich\u201d, but if we are to interpret it in a broader sense, we may understand this person as not just someone who has a lot of money, but someone whose mind is occupied with something other than God. Therefore it means it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for this kind of person to enter heaven. Sometimes Jesus made extreme statements like this, but when we think of our missionary work today, this is not an exaggeration and we certainly agree with what He is saying.<\/p>\n

Then, after hearing this bold statement the disciples ask Jesus, \u201cWho then can be saved?\u201d We too ask this same question. But Jesus looked at them and said with conviction, \u201cWith man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWho then can be saved?\u201d is what the disciples said. Indeed, there is no way for one to save oneself. The Bible says this, and this means we cannot save ourselves with our efforts or practices. When people thought \u201cif we try some way, somehow it will work out\u201d, God proved that it is impossible by giving mankind the long period between Creation and the arrival of Christ. And as a result, the many attempts of those who lived between Adam and Jesus proved that there is no salvation inside a man.<\/p>\n

In the Old Testament there is a man named Abraham. Today he is called the \u201cFather of Faith\u201d in Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. He was a man, who at the age of seventy-five, when one thinks of how to spend the rest of his life, heard God\u2019s voice and by faith left his hometown. But the fact that he made many mistakes during his life is not hidden and written clearly in the Bible.<\/p>\n

When he was ninety-nine years old, God appeared to him and said, \u201cI am God Almighty; walk before me and be blameless.\u201d Instead of counting Abraham\u2019s mistakes and shortcomings and chastising him, the LORD spoke to him and said, \u201cI am God Almighty.\u201d Abraham, indeed you have made many mistakes. Knowing this, I say to you, \u201cWalk before me and be blameless.\u201d But I am not telling you to try harder. You cannot do this by your own power. You too, know this. Just do not forget, \u201cI am God Almighty.\u201d<\/p>\n

God created the heavens and the earth, and created what we call mankind. But there is one thing he left untouched. It is our freedom of will. This he let it be. He entrusted this to each individual person. This is because if he controlled our will, like a robot is unable to love us and we cannot truly fall in love with them, there will be no love in our relationship with God. God\u2019s will was to have a relationship of love with us human beings.<\/p>\n

But this also came with a great risk. Because this means that we could forget about God and each of us have the freedom to live anyway we want, doing whatever we desire. In fact we have lived carelessly within this freedom. And sadly, this freedom actually kept us bound, and we face this reality in our lives.<\/p>\n

This is why God sent us his only son, Jesus Christ. We as humans have tried to reach up to the heavens, to get closer to God, and tried in vain to reach him. But this is an impossible and futile act, and knowing this all too well, God sent us his son Jesus Christ from his world into ours. This is the miracle of Christmas, the one and only son of God Jesus Christ bearing all of mankind\u2019s sins upon Him, when I say mankind it sounds as if it is not our own problem, but if I am to speak the truth, He did not hesitate to bear my sins and your sins, He even grants salvation to us who are stubborn, this is where we see the absolute form of God\u2019s almightiness.<\/p>\n

And indeed, countless many people have been led to salvation by God in this way. The hearts of these people were once filled with things other than God. Before, there was no room for God in their hearts. They never even thought about it. I say this as if it was someone else\u2019s business, but you and I have also been this way. Then one day, through a certain event, though the circumstances may vary, one realized that \u201cthere is a world inside where no human has power over\u201d, while another noticed that \u201cthe truth is inside something our eyes cannot see\u201d, then we were reminded of the existence of God who was beyond all these, then we were led into a personal relationship with Jesus, and were saved. We truly see the majesty and sovereignty of God revealed in these events.<\/p>\n

Now I will talk about our next topic, which is to believe in God, our Almighty Father.<\/p>\n

Believe in God, Our Almighty Father<\/span><\/p>\n

Up to this point we learned about God, the Almighty. But as you notice, there is another term written here with God and Almighty. It is written that we \u201cbelieve in God, the Father Almighty.\u201d Not only is God the Almighty one, but at the same time he is our Father.<\/p>\n

Jesus also used the word \u201cfather\u201d. Where did he use this word? In the garden of Gethsemane, where He prayed, saying \u201cAbba, Father\u201d. Let us read from Mark 14:32-36 where this is written.  32<\/sup><\/strong> They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, \u201cSit here while I pray.\u201d 33<\/sup><\/strong> He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34<\/sup><\/strong> \u201cMy soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,\u201d he said to them. \u201cStay here and keep watch.\u201d 35<\/sup><\/strong> Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. 36<\/sup><\/strong>\u201cAbba<\/em>, Father,\u201d he said, \u201ceverything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.\u201d<\/p>\n

Why was Jesus distressed and troubled? What does it mean He was overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death? This was only hours before Jesus was nailed to the cross. He Himself knew that He will be captured, whipped, humiliated, and crucified. This was not because He has sinned or made a mistake; He took all of our sins upon Himself and was put on the cross. In His distress and sorrow, He prayed in the garden. And the word that came out from the depth of His soul was \u201cAbba, Father\u201d. The word \u201cAbba\u201d as we know is the same as the words \u201cdad\u201d or \u201cdaddy\u201d that a child uses to call his father.<\/p>\n

And the amazing thing is that the Bible tells us that we too can call God in this way. In Romans 8:14-15 it is written, \u201c14<\/sup><\/strong> For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. 15<\/sup><\/strong> The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, \u201cAbba,<\/em> Father.\u201d\u201d<\/p>\n

Why is this an amazing thing? Let me tell you from my perspective. Today I am an American citizen, but I still think I am Japanese in spirit. So even though I live in this country, I still call someone who is older than me with the honorific title \u201csan\u201d. In American society, we casually call each other by our names, like \u201cMike\u201d or \u201cBob\u201d, regardless of age. One must follow the customs of the land, so I can address my peers in this way if I try, and sometimes I will be asked to do so. I have lived in the States for a total of seventeen years now, so there are many things inside me that have been Americanized. Yet this is a difficult thing to change for me. It may change one day, but I do not know when.<\/p>\n

Here we are dealing not with people, but God. We are dealing with God Almighty. It is not a matter of age difference. He is God. And we can call him \u201cdad\u201d. How amazing is that?<\/p>\n

And we can think of it in this way also. I have three children, and as most Japanese children do they call me \u201cpapa\u201d. Apart from them no other children call me \u201cpapa\u201d or \u201cdaddy\u201d. If that was to happen, it will be a very complicated situation. So this way of calling is not for everybody and is only allowed for a chosen few.<\/p>\n

Do you remember what is written in the Ten Commandments? It says \u201cYou shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God.\u201d In the times of the Old Testament his name could not be uttered carelessly. Yet now we are allowed to call him dad. Why are we allowed to call the creator of heaven and earth our dad? Does God consider each of us special?<\/p>\n

We wonder how this could be in our times, and so the people that lived two-thousand years ago had the same question. In Galatians 4:1-7 Paul gives the answer to this question. \u201c1<\/sup><\/strong> What I am saying is that as long as an heir is underage, he is no different from a slave, although he owns the whole estate. 2<\/sup><\/strong> The heir is subject to guardians and trustees until the time set by his father. 3<\/sup><\/strong> So also, when we were underage, we were in slavery under the elemental spiritual forces of the world. 4<\/sup><\/strong> But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5<\/sup><\/strong> to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. 6<\/sup><\/strong> Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, \u201cAbba<\/em>, Father.\u201d 7<\/sup><\/strong> So you are no longer a slave, but God\u2019s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the days when people feared the misuse of God\u2019s name, they called him the LORD. The word lord means ruler or master, and when one used this term, as it is written in verse 7, his relationship with God was that of a master and slave. We of course still use call him the LORD, but today we are allowed also to call him our father.<\/p>\n

Why are we allowed to do so? As it is written here, it is because Jesus Christ the son of God saved us has forgiven us of our sins, and by this we are given the right to be a child of God. And for this we can call God \u201cAbba, Father\u201d as Jesus did. We are no longer a slave of God.<\/p>\n

A famous Christian psychologist named Louis Burney once said that people\u2019s image of God is paralleled by their thoughts their father, and as a mirror reflects light it reflects their feelings. When a father shows love toward his child, speaks to him with understanding, and meets the spiritual needs of his child by listening carefully to what he says, the child comes to believe that God will take care of him as his father did. He imagines God to be like his own father.<\/p>\n

For a long time, Martin Luther disliked the term \u201cHeavenly Father\u201d. It is said that he shuddered just by hearing the word father. His father made his son study law with the hopes of him achieving knowledge and honor. But this was not the path Luther wanted to follow. Luther feared his father, so he became fearful of his Heavenly Father. He once said that \u201cone who follows the commandment to honor your father and mother is a saint.\u201d<\/p>\n

Our heart is very delicate like glass, and like a scratch in a glass cup does not disappear, our hearts stay scarred after it is wounded. A child\u2019s heart is like a blank page, so our relationship with our parents during childhood can have a big impact on us even later in life.<\/p>\n

I believe Luther grew up with this kind of wound in his heart. He struggled because his image of his strict father paralleled with that of his Heavenly Father. But as he journeyed through life, he came to know the difference of his earthly father with the Father Almighty. What then, is this difference? His earthly father was happy when Luther did what his father hoped for, but when he did not, he was harshly chastised. But his Heavenly Father loved him so much that even though he was a sinner that went against God\u2019s will, he sent his son Jesus Christ, and when Luther believed in this and felt his Heavenly Father\u2019s love, his wound was healed and he was freed. How much he must have rejoiced when he realized that he could call this Almighty being his \u201cdad\u201d!<\/p>\n

Lastly, let me talk about another amazing thing. According to this passage in Galatians, \u201csince you are his child, God has made you also an heir.\u201d Sometimes we get so excited that our heart starts racing, and this is surely something we should be excited about. There are words we use like \u201cwow\u201d that express our amazement, and they should be uttered when reading this passage. When I take these words literally, it is strange to say it myself, but I think of how rich I am. The other day I heard about someone winning the lottery for a several million dollars, but this pales in comparison to the wealth we have received.<\/p>\n

So I myself feel that I have to live like I am rich. We have to stop facing down, looking to see if there\u2019s anything on the ground, we have to live more joyously for we are the children and heir of our Almighty Father who created heaven and earth. I myself feel I have been wasteful, but God, Jesus Christ does not think this is a waste. God Almighty
<\/span><\/span>In the Apostles\u2019 Creed we confess our faith by saying \u201cI believe in God, the Father Almighty.\u201d Almighty means having unlimited power. This is true indeed. If God created the sun, but did not have control over its movements and radiation, or created fish, but could not control its life cycles, we could not call him God Almighty. The Bible first states his omnipotence in Genesis 1:1 with the words \u201c<\/span>In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.<\/span>\u201d<\/span> This is because these words form the major premise of our understanding of the Bible. These ten words encompass mankind\u2019s quest for truth from past to present.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is how Isaac Newton described himself as a scientist. He said, \u201c<\/span>I do not know what I may appear to the world but to myself I seem to have been only like a boy playing on the seashore, and diverting myself in now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Right now we are gathered to give worship before this God. Jesus said, \u201cLook at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?<\/span>\u201d <\/span>(Matthew 6:26) \u201c<\/span>And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin.<\/span>\u201d<\/span> (Matthew 6:28)<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Every now and then we see someone feeding the pigeons at a park or watering the flowers in a garden, but these pigeons and flowers are not every bird and flower on earth. \u201cThe birds of the air\u201d and \u201cthe flowers of the field\u201d Jesus is saying here are the whole species of birds and flowers that exist on earth, and they do not sow or reap, nor do they labor or spin, but they are all being taken care of. Therefore the pelicans of Florida, the ostriches of Africa, and the hummingbirds that fly into our yards are all being fed by God.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Needless to say, birds and flowers are not the only life forms on this planet. From mitochondria to whales, giant redwoods to mosses in a mountain stream, these are all in the hands of our God Almighty, and by him all life sustains. God\u2019s power is infinite, and what we humans can fathom is only a small portion of it.<\/span><\/p>\n

In one of the conversations with His disciples, Jesus spoke of God\u2019s omnipotence from another perspective. Let us read from Matthew 19:23-26.<\/span><\/p>\n

23<\/span><\/sup><\/strong> <\/span><\/span>Then Jesus said to his disciples, <\/span>\u201cTruly I tell you, it is hard for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of heaven. <\/span>24<\/sup><\/strong> <\/span>Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.\u201d25<\/sup><\/strong> <\/span>When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, \u201cWho then can be saved?\u201d 26<\/sup><\/strong> <\/span>Jesus looked at them and said, <\/span>\u201cWith man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Here He talks about \u201csomeone who is rich\u201d, but if we are to interpret it in a broader sense, we may understand this person as not just someone who has a lot of money, but someone whose mind is occupied with something other than God. Therefore it means it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for this kind of person to enter heaven. Sometimes Jesus made extreme statements like this, but when we think of our missionary work today, this is not an exaggeration and we certainly agree with what He is saying.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then, after hearing this bold statement the disciples ask Jesus, \u201cWho then can be saved?\u201d We too ask this same question. But Jesus looked at them and said with conviction, \u201cWith man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWho then can be saved?\u201d is what the disciples said. Indeed, there is no way for one to save oneself. The Bible says this, and this means we cannot save ourselves with our efforts or practices. When people thought \u201cif we try some way, somehow it will work out\u201d, God proved that it is impossible by giving mankind the long period between Creation and the arrival of Christ. And as a result, the many attempts of those who lived between Adam and Jesus proved that there is no salvation inside a man.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the Old Testament there is a man named Abraham. Today he is called the \u201cFather of Faith\u201d in Christianity, Judaism, and Islam. He was a man, who at the age of seventy-five, when one thinks of how to spend the rest of his life, heard God\u2019s voice and by faith left his hometown. But the fact that he made many mistakes during his life is not hidden and written clearly in the Bible.<\/span><\/p>\n

When he was ninety-nine years old, God appeared to him and said, \u201cI am God Almighty; walk before me and be blameless.<\/span>\u201d Instead of counting Abraham\u2019s mistakes and shortcomings and chastising him, the LORD spoke to him and said, \u201cI am God Almighty.\u201d Abraham, indeed you have made many mistakes. Knowing this, I say to you, \u201cWalk before me and be blameless.\u201d But I am not telling you to try harder. You cannot do this by your own power. You too, know this. Just do not forget, \u201cI am God Almighty.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

God created the heavens and the earth, and created what we call mankind. But there is one thing he left untouched. It is our freedom of will. This he let it be. He entrusted this to each individual person. This is because if he controlled our will, like a robot is unable to love us and we cannot truly fall in love with them, there will be no love in our relationship with God. God\u2019s will was to have a relationship of love with us human beings.<\/span><\/p>\n

But this also came with a great risk. Because this means that we could forget about God and each of us have the freedom to live anyway we want, doing whatever we desire. In fact we have lived carelessly within this freedom. And sadly, this freedom actually kept us bound, and we face this reality in our lives.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is why God sent us his only son, Jesus Christ. We as humans have tried to reach up to the heavens, to get closer to God, and tried in vain to reach him. But this is an impossible and futile act, and knowing this all too well, God sent us his son Jesus Christ from his world into ours. This is the miracle of Christmas, the one and only son of God Jesus Christ bearing all of mankind\u2019s sins upon Him, when I say mankind it sounds as if it is not our own problem, but if I am to speak the truth, He did not hesitate to bear my sins and your sins, He even grants salvation to us who are stubborn, this is where we see the absolute form of God\u2019s almightiness.<\/span><\/p>\n

And indeed, countless many people have been led to salvation by God in this way. The hearts of these people were once filled with things other than God. Before, there was no room for God in their hearts. They never even thought about it. I say this as if it was someone else\u2019s business, but you and I have also been this way. Then one day, through a certain event, though the circumstances may vary, one realized that \u201cthere is a world inside where no human has power over\u201d, while another noticed that \u201cthe truth is inside something our eyes cannot see\u201d, then we were reminded of the existence of God who was beyond all these, then we were led into a personal relationship with Jesus, and were saved. We truly see the majesty and sovereignty of God revealed in these events.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now I will talk about our next topic, which is to believe in God, our Almighty Father.<\/span><\/p>\n

Believe in God, Our Almighty Father<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Up to this point we learned about God, the Almighty. But as you notice, there is another term written here with God and Almighty. It is written that we \u201cbelieve in God, the Father Almighty.\u201d Not only is God the Almighty one, but at the same time he is our Father.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Jesus also used the word \u201cfather\u201d. Where did he use this word? In the garden of Gethsemane, where He prayed, saying \u201cAbba, Father\u201d. Let us read from Mark 14:32-36 where this is written. <\/span> <\/span>32<\/span><\/sup><\/strong> They went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, \u201cSit here while I pray.\u201d 33<\/sup><\/strong> He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. 34<\/sup><\/strong> \u201cMy soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,\u201d he said to them. \u201cStay here and keep watch.\u201d 35<\/sup><\/strong> Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him. 36<\/sup><\/strong>\u201cAbba<\/em>, Father,\u201d he said, \u201ceverything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Why was Jesus distressed and troubled? What does it mean He was overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death? This was only hours before Jesus was nailed to the cross. He Himself knew that He will be captured, whipped, humiliated, and crucified. This was not because He has sinned or made a mistake; He took all of our sins upon Himself and was put on the cross. In His distress and sorrow, He prayed in the garden. And the word that came out from the depth of His soul was \u201cAbba, Father\u201d. The word \u201cAbba\u201d as we know is the same as the words \u201cdad\u201d or \u201cdaddy\u201d that a child uses to call his father.<\/span><\/p>\n

And the amazing thing is that the Bible tells us that we too can call God in this way. In Romans 8:14-15 it is written, \u201c<\/span><\/span>14<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><\/span> <\/span><\/span>For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>15<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><\/span> <\/span><\/span>The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>And by him we cry,<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>\u201cAbba,<\/span><\/em><\/span> <\/span><\/span>Father.\u201d\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Why is this an amazing thing? Let me tell you from my perspective. Today I am an American citizen, but I still think I am Japanese in spirit. So even though I live in this country, I still call someone who is older than me with the honorific title \u201csan\u201d. In American society, we casually call each other by our names, like \u201cMike\u201d or \u201cBob\u201d, regardless of age. One must follow the customs of the land, so I can address my peers in this way if I try, and sometimes I will be asked to do so. I have lived in the States for a total of seventeen years now, so there are many things inside me that have been Americanized. Yet this is a difficult thing to change for me. It may change one day, but I do not know when.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here we are dealing not with people, but God. We are dealing with God Almighty. It is not a matter of age difference. He is God. And we can call him \u201cdad\u201d. How amazing is that?<\/span><\/p>\n

And we can think of it in this way also. I have three children, and as most Japanese children do they call me \u201cpapa\u201d. Apart from them no other children call me \u201cpapa\u201d or \u201cdaddy\u201d. If that was to happen, it will be a very complicated situation. So this way of calling is not for everybody and is only allowed for a chosen few.<\/span><\/p>\n

Do you remember what is written in the Ten Commandments? It says \u201cYou shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God.\u201d In the times of the Old Testament his name could not be uttered carelessly. Yet now we are allowed to call him dad. Why are we allowed to call the creator of heaven and earth our dad? Does God consider each of us special?<\/span><\/p>\n

We wonder how this could be in our times, and so the people that lived two-thousand years ago had the same question. In Galatians 4:1-7 Paul gives the answer to this question. <\/span>\u201c<\/span>1<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><\/span> <\/span><\/span>What I am saying is that as long as an heir is underage, he is no different from a slave, although he owns the whole estate.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>2<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><\/span> <\/span><\/span>The heir is subject to guardians and trustees until the time set by his father.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>3<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><\/span> <\/span><\/span>So also, when we were underage, we were in slavery under the elemental spiritual forces<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>of the world.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>4<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><\/span> <\/span><\/span>But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law,<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>5<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><\/span> <\/span><\/span>to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>6<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><\/span> <\/span><\/span>Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out,<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>\u201cAbba<\/span><\/em><\/span>,<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>Father.\u201d<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span>7<\/span><\/sup><\/strong><\/span> <\/span><\/span>So you are no longer a slave, but God\u2019s child; and since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In the days when people feared the misuse of God\u2019s name, they called him the LORD. The word lord means ruler or master, and when one used this term, as it is written in verse 7, his relationship with God was that of a master and slave. We of course still use call him the LORD, but today we are allowed also to call him our father.<\/span><\/p>\n

Why are we allowed to do so? As it is written here, it is because Jesus Christ the son of God saved us has forgiven us of our sins, and by this we are given the right to be a child of God. And for this we can call God \u201cAbba, Father\u201d as Jesus did. We are no longer a slave of God.<\/span><\/p>\n

A famous Christian psychologist named Louis Burney once said that people\u2019s image of God is paralleled by their thoughts their father, and as a mirror reflects light it reflects their feelings. When a father shows love toward his child, speaks to him with understanding, and meets the spiritual needs of his child by listening carefully to what he says, the child comes to believe that God will take care of him as his father did. He imagines God to be like his own father.<\/span><\/p>\n

For a long time, Martin Luther disliked the term \u201cHeavenly Father\u201d. It is said that he shuddered just by hearing the word father. His father made his son study law with the hopes of him achieving knowledge and honor. But this was not the path Luther wanted to follow. Luther feared his father, so he became fearful of his Heavenly Father. He once said that \u201cone who follows the commandment to honor your father and mother is a saint.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Our heart is very delicate like glass, and like a scratch in a glass cup does not disappear, our hearts stay scarred after it is wounded. A child\u2019s heart is like a blank page, so our relationship with our parents during childhood can have a big impact on us even later in life.<\/span><\/p>\n

I believe Luther grew up with this kind of wound in his heart. He struggled because his image of his strict father paralleled with that of his Heavenly Father. But as he journeyed through life, he came to know the difference of his earthly father with the Father Almighty. What then, is this difference? His earthly father was happy when Luther did what his father hoped for, but when he did not, he was harshly chastised. But his Heavenly Father loved him so much that even though he was a sinner that went against God\u2019s will, he sent his son Jesus Christ, and when Luther believed in this and felt his Heavenly Father\u2019s love, his wound was healed and he was freed. How much he must have rejoiced when he realized that he could call this Almighty being his \u201cdad\u201d!<\/span><\/p>\n

Lastly, let me talk about another amazing thing. According to this passage in Galatians, \u201c<\/span>since you are his child, God has made you also an heir.<\/span><\/span>\u201d Sometimes we get so excited that our heart starts racing, and this is surely something we should be excited about. There are words we use like \u201cwow\u201d that express our amazement, and they should be uttered when reading this passage. When I take these words literally, it is strange to say it myself, but I think of how rich I am. The other day I heard about someone winning the lottery for a several million dollars, but this pales in comparison to the wealth we have received.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

So I myself feel that I have to live like I am rich. We have to stop facing down, looking to see if there\u2019s anything on the ground, we have to live more joyously for we are the children and heir of our Almighty Father who created heaven and earth.
