for this year has been \u201cto know Christ\u201d.\u00a0 Each week we have been studying the character and making of Jesus Christ. This morning, let us study Chapter 4 of the Gospel According to John. Let me read it:<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>1<\/sup>The Pharisees heard that Jesus was gaining and baptizing more disciples than John, <sup>2<\/sup><span id=\"eeedbe22-82bb-4a28-9f95-dc7cd5c8f631\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">although<\/span> in fact, it was not Jesus who baptized, but his disciples. <sup>3<\/sup>When the Lord learned of this, he left Judea and went back once more to Galilee. <sup>4<\/sup>Now he had to go through Samaria. <sup>5<\/sup>So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. <sup>6<\/sup>Jacob\u2019s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour. <sup>7<\/sup>When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, \u201cWill you give me a drink?\u201d <sup>8<\/sup> (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) <sup>9<\/sup>The Samaritan woman said to him, \u201cYou are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?\u201d (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans. ) <sup>10<\/sup>Jesus answered her, \u201cIf you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.\u201d <sup>11<\/sup>\u201cSir,\u201d the woman said, \u201cyou have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? <sup>12<\/sup>Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and herds?\u201d \u00a0<sup>13<\/sup>Jesus answered, \u201cEveryone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, <sup>14<\/sup><span id=\"71f059db-1dc5-4fe2-b7ac-43a64193b2be\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">but<\/span> whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. What you have just said is quite true.\u201d (John 4:1-18)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This section of the Bible talks about a Samaritan woman. The Bible does not tell us her name. She is simply referred to as a Samaritan woman. This scripture records a conversation that took place between this Samaritan woman and Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>First, let me explain the background.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>The Background<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>This Chapter 4 of John says: \u201cFor Jews do not associate with Samaritans.\u201d (John 4:9)\u00a0 I have to explain the background of this seemingly simple statement that the Jews did not associate with Samaritans. It is based on a long history. Jews did not associate with Samaritans because the Samaritans were of mixed blood between the Jews and the foreigners.<\/p>\n<p>About 700 years before Jesus and this woman met, which would be around 722 B.C., the kingdom of Northern Israel was defeated and destroyed by an Assyrian army. That was the beginning of the Samaritans who were born between the Jewish people and the people from various other nations. Jews considered the pure blood important. That is why there had always been conflict between the Jews and the Samaritans. For this reason, while Jews had their temple in Jerusalem, the Samaritans built their own temple on the mountain of Gerizim. In fact, at the church retreat this Summer, I was told from Ms. Ruth Kakimoto, who lives in Israel and is an official guide there, that there are descendants of Samaritans in Mount Gerizim area who still carry on their tradition. She said she had several opportunities to attend some of their worship services.<\/p>\n<p>Not only that, rather than the believing in the Jewish \u201cFive Books of Moses\u201d (namely Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy), Samaritans have used their own variation of the Five Books, called Samaritan Pentateuch, from the time before Christ. These Samaritan Five Books are different from Jewish Torah. For example, if you look at Deuteronomy, Chapter 4, Verses 1-4, our Bible says:<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>1<\/sup>Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people: \u201cKeep all these commands that I <span id=\"6659707d-7374-4041-8690-2034feb0e29b\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">give<\/span> you today. <sup>2<\/sup>When you have crossed the Jordan into the land the LORD your God is giving you, set up some large stones and coat them with plaster. <sup>3<\/sup>Write on them all the words of this law when you have crossed over to enter the land the LORD your God is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey, just as the LORD, the God of your fathers, promised you. <sup>4<\/sup>And when you have crossed the Jordan, set up these stones on Mount Ebal, as I command you today, and coat them with plaster.<\/strong> (Deuteronomy 27:1-4)<\/p>\n<p>Here, Moses was about to cross the River Jordan with the people of Israel and commanded the people to set up large stones, coat them with plaster, write on them all the words of the law, and place them on Mount Ebal.<\/p>\n<p>However, Samaritans changed this word \u201cMount Ebal\u201d to \u201cMount Gerizim\u201d to insist that the Mount Gerizim, the site of their temple, was in fact the place where Moses had commanded the people to build the temple. To the Jewish people, this act of changing the content of the Five Books of Moses was clearly an act of treason. That is one of the reasons that the deep conflict existed between the Jews and the Samaritans.<\/p>\n<p>Such conflict between the Jews and the Samaritans reached its peak when, in 128 BC, Jewish High Priest John Hyrcanus destroyed the temple on Mount Gerizim. It was under such circumstances that Jesus Christ met this Samaritan woman by a well in the town of Sychar in Samaria. This encounter was unthinkable in those days.<\/p>\n<p>But, when we read this section of the Bible, we realize that Jesus did not discriminate Samaritans over Jews. Jesus simply saw a woman by the well. And, Jesus noticed immediately that his woman was thirsty in her heart. Today, we also encounter many conflicts. They might come from differences in historical and ethnic backgrounds. But, God is not concerned about the differences among us. Rather, God is more concerned about problems in our hearts.<\/p>\n<p>Next, let me talk about what the Samaritan women had been drinking.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>What the Samaritan woman had been drinking<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>This morning, we woke up, got out of bed, dressed up, and came here. Why did we do so? There are reasons and motivations behind each and every action we take. This Samaritan woman had her own life. She had lived her life motivated by her own reason.<\/p>\n<p>Her mind had been preoccupied with one thing, and that was she longed for a man who could love her. Her life had been centered around such a man, and that had been what supported her life. To some people, the most important thing in life could be wealth, honor, charity, or children.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding the wealth, a German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer said <strong>\u201cWealth is like seawater; the more we drink, the thirstier we become.\u201d <\/strong>The more we drink, the thirstier we become\u2026 When we are thirsty, we often drink sweet juice or soft drink. These drinks contain an amazingly large quantity of sugar to encourage people to want to drink more. When we drink these drinks, they quench our thirst. But, it is only a temporary solution. This was true with this Samaritan woman. She had been drinking her water, only to get even more thirsty.<\/p>\n<p>As a husband, or as a wife, or as a parent, or as a child, each of us do our very best each day to improve the family relationship. But, we still encounter conflicts and problems. Why is it? We often ask ourselves \u201cWhat is this feeling of thirst in my heart?\u201d \u201cWhy is he or she not content, although I have done my best?\u201d Why so? What is the reason for such problems?<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>This summer was unusually hot. In such a hot weather, we must be careful not to get dehydrated. What makes the dehydration dangerous is that people could be unaware of such situation until it is too late. We do not even know that we are in danger. 60 percent of our human body is water. The dehydration happens when the body loses its balance. We need water. When we are deprived of such an important element, we become dehydrated, putting our life in danger.<\/p>\n<p>How about our spirit? The Genesis says:<strong> \u201cthe LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.\u201d<\/strong> (Genesis 2:7) We were formed from the dust and God breathed the breath of life into us. And we became a living being. In the Bible, the \u201cbreath\u201d implies \u201cspirit\u201d. Thus, we became a living being when God breathed the spirit of God into us. This means that we are a spiritual being. We must remember that we are a spiritual being when we deal with our problems. Otherwise, we cannot truly understand the nature of our problem and cannot quench the thirst in our heart. If children are thirsty for spiritual support, it would be a mistake to try to satisfy them by providing material things to them.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus was very clear about this. He said:<strong> \u201dThe Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life.\u201d<\/strong> (John 6:63)\u00a0 This is how Jesus Christ looks at us and at our hearts. When Jesus looks at our hearts, Jesus can tell whether we are living with the spirit or whether we are trying to solve problems disregarding the spirit. Jesus took the same approach to deal with this Samaritan woman. He told her what he could offer:<\/p>\n<p><sup>13<\/sup>Jesus answered, \u201cEveryone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, <sup>14<\/sup><span id=\"d84ebf46-70bc-41fe-ae0d-d4f49026280c\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">but<\/span> whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jesus knew her heart. And that was why he said \u201cEveryone who drinks this water will be thirsty again.\u201d Jesus knew the thirst in her heart. And, Jesus said that if she drinks his water, she would never thirst again and the water would become <span id=\"26f2a44d-94ab-4cb4-a328-6f24b853c970\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">in<\/span> her a spring of water welling up to eternal life. Jesus wanted first to identify and point out the source of her thirst.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew recorded the following words of Jesus:<strong> \u201cOn hearing this, Jesus said, \u2018It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: \u201cI desire mercy, not sacrifice.\u201d For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.\u2019\u201d<\/strong> (Matthew 9:12-13)<\/p>\n<p>Jesus Christ is the doctor of our spirit. He looks at our heart and immediately determines whether or not the spirit of the Lord is within us.<\/p>\n<p>When a doctor does not tell the truth, we do not trust such a doctor. We do not trust a doctor who prescribes only indigestion pills when we are suffering from a colon cancer. We want our doctor to accurately diagnose our situation and honestly tell us what is happening.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus, our spiritual caretaker, diagnosed the heart of the Samaritan woman. A good doctor can look right through superficial symptoms such as fever and nausea and find the true cause of the problem correctly.\u00a0 Jesus also found out what had been bothering this Samaritan woman. Jesus found the true cause and wanted to offer a cure for her real problem. This woman had lived her life trying to satisfy her worldly needs, but had neglected her spirit of life. That was why Jesus told her straight:<\/p>\n<p><sup>16<\/sup>He told her,<strong> \u201cGo, call your husband and come back.\u201d <sup>17<\/sup>\u201cI have no husband,\u201d she replied. Jesus said to her, \u201cYou are right when you say you have no husband. <sup>18<\/sup>The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.\u201d<\/strong> (John 4:16-18)<\/p>\n<p>The cause of the problem of this Samaritan woman was hidden deep in her heart, which she had always tried to hide. Telling the truth is painful to people. But, the truth must be pointed out and we must face the situation face to face if we really seek the cure for our problems. That meant pointing out what she had been drinking all her life. She was still drinking the same drink even at that moment. And, she got more thirsty the more she drank the same drink.<\/p>\n<p>Since our cars are made to run on gasoline, it is wrong to try to use some cheaper substitute to save gasoline cost. That would destroy the car. She was in the same situation. What she had been doing was wrong. She did not give up and was single-minded. She had repeated the same mistake five times by this time. Drinking a soft drink can quench our thirst momentarily. But, it would make us even more thirsty. Her heart was getting more and more thirsty.<\/p>\n<p>Let me move on to the last point, namely \u201cSamaritan woman and we\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Samaritan woman and we<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>John 4:4 says: <strong>\u201cNow [Jesus] had to go through Samaria.\u201d<\/strong> This statement points out that it was necessary for Jesus to go through Samaria. Why? Because Jesus wanted to meet the Samaritan woman.<\/p>\n<h4>\u00a0In the eyes of Jesus, this woman was not a Samaritan woman, but a human deprived of the spiritual needs. Jesus knew he could cure her situation. That is why Jesus wanted to take this opportunity to meet her in person and help her.<\/h4>\n<p>This morning, I said earlier that the Samaritan people had revised the words in the Deuteronomy. The words of God were recorded in Mount Ebal. But, Samaritans changed the word Mount Ebal to Mount Gerizim, the site of their temple.<\/p>\n<p>Samaritans wanted to say that the stones recording God\u2019s words were at Mount Gerizim rather than at Mount Ebal. But, this Deuteronomy also says: <strong>\u00a0<sup>11<\/sup>On the same day Moses commanded the people: <sup>12<\/sup>When you have crossed the Jordan, these tribes shall stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph and Benjamin. <sup>13<\/sup>And these tribes shall stand on Mount Ebal to pronounce curses: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan and Naphtali. <sup>14<\/sup>The Levites shall recite to all the people of Israel in a loud voice<\/strong>: (Deuteronomy 27:11-14)<\/p>\n<p>I said that the stone of God\u2019s words was built on Mount Ebal, and that Samaritans changed this to Mount Gerizim in their Samaritan Five Books. However, we find an interesting statement here. This says to proclaim blessing on Mount Gerizim and pronounce curses on Mount Ebal. The stone recorded the words of God. Why was it erected on Mount Ebal, the cursed mountain, and not on Mount Gerizim, the blessed mountain?<\/p>\n<p>All of this happened about 1500 years prior to the time Jesus Christ met this Samaritan woman, namely when there were no Samaritans on this earth. In fact, the Samaritans did not emerge on this earth until 800 years after this. And, these Samaritans switched the blessed Mount Gerizim with the cursed Mount Ebal.<\/p>\n<p>What do these curses of Mount Ebal signify? These signify our fear, despair, disappointment, and our thirst. However, this temple was built in the middle of such fear, despair, disappointment and thirst. No, it was precisely because of these curses that the words of God were placed there.<\/p>\n<p>I hope you understood the meaning of the statement: \u201cNow [Jesus] had to go through Samaria.\u201d (John 4:4) This Samaritan woman had been defeated, hopeless, and was hanging desperately to life. That was why Jesus, the word of God, approached this woman. In fact, Jesus said: <strong>\u201cIt is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. <sup>13<\/sup>For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.\u201d<\/strong> (Matthew 9:12-13)<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>As Jesus went to this lonely and thirsty Samaritan woman in Samaria in order to quench her thirst, Jesus is talking to us this morning: <strong><sup>13<\/sup>Jesus answered, \u201cEveryone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, <sup>14<\/sup><span id=\"041595bd-d4b1-4be3-8eda-35a6c78d7959\" class=\"GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark\">but<\/span> whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>How about it? Are we living by worldly needs? Or are we living by the spirit? Is there a deepening thirst in your heart? Or has it reached a stage where you can no longer even feel the thirst? Isn\u2019t it high time to face the reality?<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps some of you just happened to be here at this service. That is OK. That Samaritan woman also went to the well expecting nothing special. But, Jesus was there. This woman met Jesus and her life was changed completely. In the similar manner, Jesus Christ is present here among us this morning in order to meet us individually and to talk about our thirst in our heart.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus said: \u201cEveryone who drinks this water will be thirsty again.\u201d This went straight into the problem that the Samaritan woman had been struggling with. Jesus tells us that we will become thirsty again. He tells us: \u201cDo not continue to drink your water, but drink the water I give you.
