Has no one condemned you?\u201d<\/em><strong><em><sup>11\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><\/strong><em>\u201cNo one, sir,\u201d she said \u201cThen neither do I condemn you,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<em>Jesus declared. \u201cGo now and leave your life of sin.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Two weeks ago, I explained Jesus had been targeted by his fellow countrymen, Jewish people.\u00a0 Among all of the Jews, the teachers of the law and the Pharisees who were so called \u201creligious people\u201d hated Jesus the most.\u00a0 In the Bible verses we will study today, we will find those people approached Jesus to look for a good excuse to accuse him.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus had been already well known and followed by many people by this time so people gathered around him when he entered the temple courts.\u00a0 Then the teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought the woman caught in adultery and said.\u00a0 \u201c<em>\u201cTeacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery.<\/em>\u00a0<strong><em><sup>5\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><\/strong><em>In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women.<\/em>\u00a0<em>Now what do you say?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Needless to say, it was a malicious question to trap Jesus.\u00a0 If Jesus agreed to stone this woman as the law says, he wouldn\u2019t have any trouble with the teachers of the law and the Pharisees because it was what they were intending.\u00a0 However, if Jesus agreed with them, it would deny what Jesus taught and showed to people about God\u2019s love and grace.\u00a0 And Jesus\u2019 followers might have left him since Jesus didn\u2019t practice what he always taught to them.<\/p>\n<p>On the contrary, if Jesus had said, \u201cAccording to the law, it is right to stone her.\u00a0 But you shouldn\u2019t do it because God is full of love and mercy. Let the woman go\u201d, Jesus would have been accused because what he would do was against the law and he would have given people the wrong idea.\u00a0 That was just what the religious people pursued.<\/p>\n<p>The religious people must have come up with the detailed plan to trap him.\u00a0 They expected to find a reason to kill Jesus who had become an obstacle for them.\u00a0 At the temple courts, more people gathered together to find out what was going on.\u00a0 The crowd might have been getting very loud and agitated.\u00a0 But Jesus was looking down and kept writing something on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>Can you imagine what the woman was like in the scene?\u00a0 She might have been standing in the middle of the crowd wearing the same clothes when she was caught in adultery.\u00a0 People must have looked at her with curious eyes.\u00a0 Can you imagine how she felt?\u00a0 She might have been trembling with shame and fear.<\/p>\n<p>What was Jesus writing on the ground?\u00a0 He was looking down while writing on the ground.\u00a0 If Jesus had stared at the woman, she might have been afraid and felt hurt.\u00a0 Jesus may have chosen not look at her directly to consider to her feelings as the act of love.<\/p>\n<p>God chose the Israelites to make the history through the relationship with them.\u00a0 First, the heaven and the earth were created, and then man was created.\u00a0 The number of people increased, but they didn\u2019t have any government or the law at first.\u00a0 Then God gave them the law.\u00a0 It was indispensable for their lives.\u00a0 The law limited their ways of living.\u00a0 But in another point of view, it protected their lives.\u00a0 What this woman did was evidently against the law.\u00a0 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees were not wrong.\u00a0 God gave the law about adultery to the Israelites through Moses.\u00a0 It is said.<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>22\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>If a man is found sleeping with another man\u2019s wife, both the man who slept with her and the woman must die.\u00a0You must purge the evil from Israel. <strong><sup>23\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>If a man happens to meet in a town a virgin pledged to be married and he sleeps with her,\u00a0<strong><sup>24\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>you shall take both of them to the gate of that town and stone them to death\u2014the young woman because she was in a town and did not scream for help, and the man because he violated another man\u2019s wife. You must purge the evil from among you. (Deuteronomy 22:22-24)<\/p>\n<p>According to the law, it is clear that what she had done deserved death by stoning.\u00a0 She had no excuse because she was caught in the act of adultery.\u00a0 She was in a desperate situation.\u00a0\u00a0 Now, I should make it clear what the Bible says about sins we have committed.\u00a0 It says, \u201c<strong><sup>7\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>Do not be deceived:\u00a0God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. (Galatians 6:7)\u00a0 As it says, we have to reap whatever we sowed. It says that you shouldn\u2019t despise God by thinking it was OK because nobody was watching.\u00a0 It is very clear that this woman had to reap whatever she had sowed.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s see what Jesus was going to do in this situation?\u00a0 While the people kept asking for an answer, he was writing something on the ground, but finally he looked up them and said only one thing. <em>\u201cLet any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone<\/em>\u00a0<em>at her.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0After that, he went back to writing on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>John didn\u2019t describe the scene at the moment Jesus opened his mouth.\u00a0 But I can guess that the loud crowd became silent in a split second.\u00a0 This must have been a moment as if the agitated people felt like they had had cold water poured over their heads.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus said \u201cone of you who is without sin\u201d.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t say \u201cone of you who didn\u2019t commit adultery\u201d.\u00a0 Manmade laws give a rank to each sin, and punishments vary depending on a sin.\u00a0 However, there is no sin that is more serious or less serious before God.\u00a0 All sins are equal to God.<\/p>\n<p>Remember the word of Lord\u2019s Prayer.\u00a0 It says \u201cAnd forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us.\u201d\u00a0 (In English, \u201cAnd forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us.\u201d)\u00a0 The word \u201ctrespass\u201d is used here as \u201csin\u201d.\u00a0 It means intruding or invading.<\/p>\n<p>We see the sign with \u201ctrespass\u201d in many places.\u00a0 When we see \u201cno trespassing\u201d at a ranch, we can\u2019t enter there. We will break the rule if we enter a land by either destroying the fence with a dump truck or just by walking in.\u00a0\u00a0 Committing a sin means trespassing the line God draws.\u00a0 Seriousness of the sin of adultery and the sin of stealing just one dollar are equal to God.<\/p>\n<p>The teachers of the law and the Pharisees understood what Jesus said because they were the law experts.\u00a0 So, they began to leave one by one starting from the oldest one.\u00a0 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees tried to challenge Jesus but couldn\u2019t prove themselves they had never committed a sin before God.<\/p>\n<p>Here, we need examining this incident carefully because it didn\u2019t happen by accident.\u00a0 When Jesus said to the crowd \u201cIf anyone of without sins throw a stone\u201d, no one did.\u00a0 It wouldn\u2019t have been surprising if someone had thrown a stone at the woman because some of the people might have considered they have never done anything wrong in their lives.<\/p>\n<p>But actually, it didn\u2019t happen.\u00a0 Why didn\u2019t it?\u00a0\u00a0 It is because Jesus Christ himself said the word.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t argue with the people.\u00a0 He didn\u2019t pay attention to them.\u00a0 But when Jesus talked, they must have felt as if they had been brought to Jesus without sin.\u00a0 I would think they couldn\u2019t consider themselves sinless or innocent anymore because the light of Jesus shone on these people\u2019s hearts.<\/p>\n<p>After a cataract surgery, a person\u2019s vision improves and they now realize how dirty the house is.\u00a0 They are able to see dust they didn\u2019t notice before.\u00a0 As it is, we can see dust in the darkness when the light is shining.\u00a0 When we go to a dark attic with a flashlight on, we can see dust particles floating in the air.\u00a0 Actually, dust is always there.\u00a0 But we can\u2019t see it without light.\u00a0 It is clear that our sins are visible when we come close to Jesus who claimed he is light.\u00a0 Recognizing our sins is the evidence that we have come close to Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>I talked about how Jesus washed the feet of the disciples several weeks ago.\u00a0 As a newborn baby\u2019s feet are spotless, their hearts are also pure.\u00a0\u00a0 Pure means that there is no dirt.\u00a0 As we age, our feet get dirtier.\u00a0 Our hearts also become less pure.\u00a0 When Jesus said to the people \u201cThe one who have no sin throw a stone\u201d, older people must have remembered what they had done in the past and must have realized the dirt in their hearts.\u00a0 The one who knew better left first and others followed.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, all of them went away.\u00a0 In other words, they ran away from there.\u00a0 They found it was not a good situation for them.\u00a0 People who were holding stones couldn\u2019t find the reason to accuse her anymore.\u00a0 Instead, they thought they might be accused because of their own sins.\u00a0 Jesus\u2019 light shone not only on the woman, but also on the people who surrounded the woman.<\/p>\n<p>However, two people didn\u2019t run away.\u00a0 One of them was the woman and the other was Jesus.\u00a0 Remember what Jesus said, <em>\u201cLet any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone<\/em>\u00a0<em>at her.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<strong><em><sup>8\u00a0<\/sup><\/em><\/strong><em>Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground<\/em>.\u00a0 It was possible for this woman to take advantage of the confusion to escape.\u00a0 Jesus gave her a choice either to stay or run away while he was looking down on the ground.\u00a0 She chose to stay there. I can imagine the word of Jesus hit her heart at that moment when she was about to be stoned.\u00a0 Jesus\u2019 calm attitude while writing something on the ground despite the agitated situation probably caught her attention.\u00a0 She stayed in the light which was Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n<p>Today, we also have two choices.\u00a0 We have freedom to choose one of them.\u00a0 One of them is running away from the light of Christ.\u00a0 The other is to walk towards the light.<\/p>\n<p>Sisters and brothers in Christ, my prayer from the bottom of my heart is all of us walk towards the light.\u00a0 We don\u2019t need to hide or cover the dirty spot in our hearts any more.\u00a0 Dirty spots represent sins.\u00a0 They will be there no matter how we try to hide them.\u00a0 The Bible tells the truth will uncover everything before God someday. So I recommend reading the verses from James in the Bible.\u00a0 <strong><sup>8\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>Come near to God and he will come near to you.\u00a0Wash your hands,\u00a0you sinners, and purify your hearts,\u00a0you double-minded.\u00a0<strong><sup>9\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom.\u00a0<strong><sup>10\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. (James 4:8-10)\u00a0 Jesus once fell on his knees before the disciples to wash their feet.\u00a0 What we need is just giving our dirty feet to Jesus as the disciples did.<\/p>\n<p>What did Jesus say to this woman at last?\u00a0 He said, <em>\u201cThen neither do I condemn you,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<em>Jesus declared. \u201cGo now and leave your life of sin.\u201d\u00a0 <\/em>We need to know her sins were not cleaned at that point yet. There is the fact her sins should be judged before God.\u00a0 Someday, she would need to reap what she had sowed.<\/p>\n<p>What the religious people brought up to Jesus here was about God\u2019s righteousness and God\u2019s love.\u00a0 They were both God\u2019s character. \u00a0God\u2019s righteousness means God is perfectly right so that He can\u2019t ignore sins.\u00a0 God\u2019s love means He is the love that forgives our sins completely.<\/p>\n<p>Thinking about God\u2019s character, we understand God\u2019s righteousness and love can\u2019t stay together.\u00a0 When God uncovers everything to make the right judgment, there is no room for love.\u00a0 On the other hand, when love is complete, the judgment is exempted because love forgives and covers a multitude of sins.<\/p>\n<p>Imagine a judge who tries the case of a criminal caught at a crime scene.\u00a0\u00a0 The judge can\u2019t find him innocent even though he has compassion for this criminal. If he does, it will be against righteousness.\u00a0 God is righteous.\u00a0 If God forgives all sinners because of His love, He is not a righteous God anymore.<\/p>\n<p>If parents judge everything that their children did, the relationship between parents and children would be broken.\u00a0 Parents have unconditional love for their children.\u00a0 They love and forgive children\u2019s mistakes and rebellions while they are growing up.\u00a0 Parents who love children can\u2019t become judges for them.<\/p>\n<p>Then if God\u2019s righteousness and God\u2019s love can\u2019t exist together, is it possible for both to become one?<\/p>\n<p>There is only one way to complete God\u2019s righteousness and God\u2019s love at the same time.\u00a0 Jesus who said, <em>\u201cThen neither do I condemn you,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0was also called \u201cthe Lamb of God,\u00a0who takes away the sin of the world.\u201d (John 1:29)\u00a0 When Jesus stayed with the woman who didn\u2019t leave the courtyard, Jesus determined that he would carry all the woman\u2019s sins and would receive the judgment she deserved so that she wouldn\u2019t be judged.<\/p>\n<p>The crucifixion of Jesus Christ was done once in our history.\u00a0 Jesus sacrificed himself for us on the cross and received all punishment we deserve from God. In this way, he completed God\u2019s righteousness.\u00a0 His death allows us to be innocent.\u00a0 It shows God\u2019s unconditional love for us.\u00a0 God\u2019s righteousness and God\u2019s love was completed on the cross. The cross is the sign of God\u2019s perfect righteousness and perfect love.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus also tells us the same word that he gave to this woman <em>\u201cThen neither do I condemn you,\u201d<\/em> She once was in a desperate situation but was allowed to leave without the punishment.\u00a0 This also applies to us.\u00a0 \u00a0Our trespass or sins are also forgiven completely on Christ\u2019s cross.\u00a0 All who received such love and forgiveness from God will change their ways to live from that moment. What does it mean?<\/p>\n<p>Lately, I have talked many times about something that motivates us.\u00a0 At the moment we are forgiven, our motivation is changed.\u00a0 We used to do something because of our honor, our guilt or fear. But it is replaced with Jesus\u2019 love.\u00a0\u00a0 Our life becomes totally different from the past at that moment.\u00a0 We are motivated with Christ\u2019s love.\u00a0 Our hearts are filled with joy and peace.\u00a0 Think about this worship service.\u00a0 Greeters, ushers, people singing in the worship team, a chairperson and a messenger are full of joy doing their jobs through Christ\u2019s love.\u00a0 Some people may work reluctantly when their turns come, or they feel they have to work because they can\u2019t turn down the request.\u00a0 It is totally wrong for God\u2019s followers to be motivated by those reasons.<\/p>\n<p>I still remember very clearly the event I attended.\u00a0 Japan holiness I once belonged to has an annual meeting every spring.\u00a0 And the last day is usually the mission rally.\u00a0 It was held at Hibiya civic auditorium in Tokyo.\u00a0 I was an elementary school student and was sitting on the seat on the top of the auditorium.\u00a0 The messenger gave the message from the bottom of the building.\u00a0 He said, \u201cThe Lord gave up his life for us.\u00a0 Is there anyone who wants to answer his love?\u201d I hardly understood his message at that time. But when I understood that Jesus died on the cross for me, and it was for my sins, I was touched so much that I stood up from my seat to go down towards the messenger by answering the Lord\u2019s love.<\/p>\n<p>What about you? Brothers and sisters, Jesus Christ washes our sins with his blood on the cross.\u00a0 Why don\u2019t you come to Christ\u2019s cross to receive his love?\u00a0 And then let\u2019s walk our life
