12\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.<\/strong> 13\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one\u2019s life for one\u2019s friends.<\/strong> 14\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>You are my friends if you do what I command.<\/strong> 15\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master\u2019s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.<\/strong> 16\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you<\/strong> so that you might go and bear fruit\u2014fruit that will last\u2014and so that whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you.<\/strong> 17\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>This is my command: Love each other. <\/strong>(John 15:12-17)<\/p>\n

About two months ago, a soul singer Ben King passed away. He was well known for his song: \u201cStand by me.\u201d A movie was made with this title. This movie depicted four 12 year old boys travelling for two days in one summer through country side and wooded areas of Oregon in the 1950s. This hit songs was incorporated into this movie as the boys undergo numerous encounters in the trip. They joked around as they traveled. The movie also revealed each member\u2019s family problems.<\/p>\n

One of these boys grew up to be a writer and wrote about the boyhood memory as a novel. At the end of the book, he wrote: \u00a0\u201cThe year was 1959. Summer of 12-year old boys. Two days of an adventure trip. I have not met such friends ever since and will never again.\u201d This was a recollection of a two-day trip. But, these boys were lucky, I would say, to have met such close friends for life.<\/p>\n

There are many religions in this world. But only Jesus Christ said \u201cYou are my friends.\u201dWe did not tell Jesus: \u201cWe want to be friends with you.\u201d It was Jesus who first said: \u201cYou are my friends.\u201dIn fact Jesus said: \u201dYou did not choose me, but I chose you.\u201d<\/strong> (John 15:16)<\/p>\n

In this section, Jesus talks about servants and friends. What is the difference between these two? Jesus contrasted these two and said: \u00a0\u201cI no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master\u2019s business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you.\u201d (15) \u00a0Jesus said: \u201cI no longer call you servants.\u201d Living Bible says: \u201cI no longer call you servants, for a master doesn\u2019t confide in his slaves.\u201d These words of Jesus imply that the relationship between God and us used to be like a master and servants. This was the only possible relationship since although we knew of God, we were not told any details about who God was.<\/p>\n

This also means that if our relationship with God is that of servants and a master, we are expected to listen and obey God even if we do not know anything about God. The relationship between a master and servants is like that.<\/p>\n

In contrast, Jesus called us friends. He said the reason was that He had told us everything that He had learned from his God his Father, Yes, Jesus revealed to us through his own words and actions what his Father, God, is like, what God does, and what He wants of us. Not only Jesus revealed these to us, but he also revealed the heart of God to us, making it possible for us to have something we can share with Jesus. That is why Jesus calls us his friends. And that is revealed to us today through the Bible.<\/p>\n

When we think about this, we realize that this is amazing. People think of God in a very vague sense. Some hesitate to call such an entity as God. But they feel they have to admit that there is \u201csomething great\u201d ruling over us. But the picture of God that Jesus had told us is very clear in details. This God is like a father who is waiting for our return, he is the one who looks over a widow, he kneels down to wash our feet, and he grieves and cries over death just like us. Jesus had revealed all these to us and shared these with us because Jesus calls us his friends.<\/p>\n

There is one thing that puzzles us, however. Jesus also said the following:<\/p>\n

\u201d<\/strong>12 <\/sup><\/strong>My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.<\/strong> 13\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one\u2019s life for one\u2019s friends.<\/strong> 14\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>You are my friends if you do what I command.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

It is written: \u201dMy command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.\u201d <\/strong>(12) Jesus says clearly here that it is His command.<\/p>\n

Some of us might be turned off since, on one hand he calls us friends, and yet on the other hand he is handing down a commandment to us. It might be acceptable for a master to hand down commands to servants. But, Jesus said we are his friends and yet he is handing down commands for us to follow. This word \u201ccommand\u201d sounds very much like an order given out by a master to his servants.<\/p>\n

We know about the Ten Commandments God had given to Moses. Commandments sound like something that imposes restriction on our freedom But, let me point out that the Ten Commandments were given to free us and not to put restraints on us. The Ten Commandments were given to us by God, who loves and cares for us, to protect us and to allow us to live a blessed life. These were words of love.<\/p>\n

Actually, God had given us much more commandments over and beyond the Ten Commandments. There are hundreds of these commandments. However, Jesus condensed these into two commandments. When a scribe asked Jesus which is the greatest commandment in the Law, Jesus said that the first is \u201cto love the Lord your God with your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.\u201d And he also said the second is \u201cto love your neighbors as yourself.\u201d So, the commands from Jesus ware condensed into \u201cLove of God\u201d and \u201cLove of the neighbors.\u201d In fact, these were what Jesus had tried to show us through his life on this earth.<\/p>\n

These commandments are not being imposed on us forcefully. There are reasons for these commandments. Jesus revealed to us everything about God the Father including how much our God loved us. Therefore, since we know that our Father loves us, the command from Jesus to love each other as Jesus has loved us is not something we obey grudgingly but do so as a natural response to the love from God. That is why Jesus also said: \u201dGreater love has no one than this: to lay down one\u2019s life for one\u2019s friends.<\/strong> You are my friends if you do what I command\u201d <\/strong>(13,14). Jesus was telling us that we certainly observed how he has loved us. He has conveyed his love to us at every chance he had. So, Jesus expected us as his friends to honor this commandment. Jesus said he was giving this commandment because we are true friends of his.<\/p>\n

In fact, Jesus has given up his own life for us whom he had called his friends. Jesus did die for us. He did give up the most important thing to us. Jesus was simply asking us the same from us, namely, Love each other as I have loved you.<\/strong>(12)<\/p>\n

Solomon once wrote these words: \u201dYou use steel to sharpen steel, and one friend sharpens another\u201d <\/strong>(The Message MSG) (Proverbs 27:17) As steel sharpens steel, friends sharpen the hearts of each other. Our friend Jesus sharpens our heart through his commandment: \u201cLove your God and love each other.\u201d<\/p>\n

To love each other is not an easy thing to do for most of us. It is almost unthinkable to throw down our life for friends. In fact, we almost never encounter a situation demanding such action. By the way, let me point out here that the Greek word here translated as \u201clay down\u201d is also translated as \u201cgive up\u201d, \u201cplace\u201d, or \u201coffer\u201d. We must understand that when he said \u201cGreater love has no one than this: to lay down one\u2019s life for one\u2019s friend,\u201d<\/strong> he was talking about offering our life for friends. We are being sharpened daily so that we can follow his commandments.<\/p>\n

Christian faith consists of vertical and horizontal relationships. The vertical relationship is between God and each of us. The horizontal relationship is between us and the people around us. The will of God prevails only when these two relationships are realized. When we build a house, we erect vertical posts first. And crossbars are attached to these posts to support walls. This is the way houses to build a structurally sound house. No house is built from vertical posts alone or from crossbars only.<\/p>\n

Love of God is poured to us vertically from above. And this love coming from above empowers us to extend our love horizontally to others. This is how we love each other.<\/p>\n

Jesus called several people as \u201cfriends\u201d during his life on earth. You might recall the names of some of them. When Lazarus, brother of Mary and Martha, died, Jesus said as he was heading out to the house: \u00a0\u201cOur friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I am going there to wake him up.\u201d <\/strong>12\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>His disciples replied, \u201cLord, if he sleeps, he will get better.\u201d<\/strong> (John 11:11-12) Jesus was especially close to Mary, Martha and Lazarus. That was why Jesus called them friends. I am sure Jesus had told them everything that he had heard from God. There was another one Jesus called a friend. But, this one was a surprise.<\/p>\n

This was that Judas Iscariot who sold Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. Judas left the room of the Last Supper and came back with soldiers to arrest Jesus. What did Judas do in front of Jesus before? And what Jesus do in front of Judas? Matthew wrote:<\/p>\n

49\u00a0<\/sup>Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, \u201cGreetings, Rabbi!\u201d and kissed him. 50\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus replied, \u201cDo what you came for, friend.\u201d Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him. (Matthew 26:49-50)<\/p>\n

Jesus had clearly known that Judas came to arrest Jesus. But, Jesus did not say \u201cYou traitor.\u201d Rather, Jesus called Judas \u201cfriend.\u201d Why? According to the scripture reading this morning, that was because Jesus had told Judas everything he had heard from God the Father. Yes, Judas was with Jesus all the time and had heard him speak about God. Jesus had told Judas about God in details again and again. In that sense, Judas was a friend of Jesus, too.<\/p>\n

When Jesus addressed Judas as a friend, Judas must have felt pain in his heart. His heart must have sunk to the bottom. Who is this man called Christ? Why is he calling a traitor, a friend? These words of Jesus represented the last chance Jesus extended to Judas. This was the time Jesus laid down himself to Judas. \u00a0Perhaps it was too late. Nevertheless, Judas could have accepted the offer Jesus was extending to Judas. Judas could have told Jesus that he regretted what he was doing.\u00a0 (The reality was, however, Judas killed himself without redeeming himself.)<\/p>\n

The love of God is like that. Whatever mistakes we commit, however rebellious we are against God, Jesus still lays down himself for us to the very end. Blessed are those who accept the extended hand of Jesus even at the last moment of life. Last week, I talked about the professional golfer Payne Stewart. His mother once said he was boorish, his wife said he was arrogant, and his caddie said he was short-tempered. Payne Steward was known for his disrespect of manners. But, when he accepted the love of Jesus, his personality changed. \u00a0This selfish and boorish individual was transformed because of the overwhelming love of Jesus. He changed to someone who would spread his love to people around him.<\/p>\n

There must be many achievements you would like to establish in your life. But the greatest achievement would be the love Jesus was talking about. We all seek love, hunger for love, and try very hard to love others. But, too often we find ourselves not being loved, and not able to love. But, Jesus continues to talk to us even today: Love each other as I have loved you.<\/strong> (12)<\/p>\n

Above all else, we must clearly understand that we are loved by Jesus. Jesus is the reason and the source of our love towards others. Let us respond to that love of God. Let us respond to the love of Jesus with love of our own. And that response is to live in the commandments of Jesus. By so doing we would reveal that we love Jesus also. This was written in the Bible:<\/p>\n

21\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong>Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.\u201d <\/strong>(John 14:21)<\/p>\n

When the friendship with God is established within us, we can become the individual God wanted us to become. If there is hope in this world. It is not a complicated concept. The hope of this world is realized when we strengthen the friendship with Jesus Christ. May our friend Jesus sharpen us further in our day-to-day life! \u00a0Let us pray.<\/p>\n
