Better or for Worse<br \/>\nThe Importance of Knowing God&#8217;s Blessing<br \/>\nAdam and Eve<br \/>\nNovember 15th 2015<\/p>\n<p>We finished our study series \u201cknowing Christ\u201d on the Gospel According to John last week. From today, we will start a new study series \u201cFor better or for worse\u201d in line with our annual motto \u201cFor richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health\u201d. We will look into the people from the Bible along with the theme, \u201cFor better or for worse\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The first characters of the series are Adam and Eve. Genesis records that God created the first man and woman. Unlike other creatures, only they were created in God\u2019s likeness, by God. God allowed Adam and Eve to live in the Garden of Eden, and to cherish and to enjoy everything there. They were in the perfect environment.<\/p>\n<p>7\u00a0Then the\u00a0Lord\u00a0God formed\u00a0a man[c]\u00a0from the dust of the ground\u00a0and breathed into his nostrils the breath\u00a0of life,\u00a0and the man became a living being.8\u00a0Now the\u00a0Lord\u00a0God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden;\u00a0and there he put the man he had formed.\u00a09\u00a0The\u00a0Lord\u00a0God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground\u2014trees\u00a0that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life\u00a0and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. (Genesis 2: 7-9)<\/p>\n<p>When God finished and saw all the creation that he had made, he said \u201cit was very good\u201d(Genesis 1: 31). It\u2019s probably like an artist that looks at his finished artwork and is satisfied with his masterpiece. That means, when we are impressed and amazed by beautiful natural things, such as sunset, the blue ocean, and animals\u2019 behaviour, we sympathize with God\u2019s statement \u201cit was very good\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>And, surprisingly we humans are one of his creations; God initially said \u201cit was very good.\u201d<br \/>\nWhen we see sacrifice and affection in us, without gain or loss that is against our human nature, we see some of what God said in us, in humans.<\/p>\n<p>Adam was created on earth, by God, as the first man. Adam already had had a heart then, knowing that God gave him a partner, Eve. In the beginning, they were born in the perfect environment as God\u2019s masterpiece. However, Adam and Eve created a problem in this perfect environment. Satan used a serpent and approached Adam and Eve.<\/p>\n<p>3\u00a0Now the serpent\u00a0was more crafty than any of the wild animals the\u00a0Lord\u00a0God had made. He said to the woman, \u201cDid God really say, \u2018You must not eat from any tree in the garden\u2019?\u201d<br \/>\n2\u00a0The woman said to the serpent, \u201cWe may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,\u00a03\u00a0but God did say, \u2018You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.\u2019\u201d<br \/>\n4\u00a0\u201cYou will not certainly die,\u201d the serpent said to the woman.\u00a05\u00a0\u201cFor God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.\u201d<br \/>\n6\u00a0When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable\u00a0for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband,\u00a0who was with her, and he ate it.\u00a07\u00a0Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked;\u00a0so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.8\u00a0Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid\u00a0from the\u00a0Lord\u00a0God among the trees of the garden.\u00a0(Genesis 3:1-8)<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s right. The worst thing had happened in the perfect environment. We want to keep this situation in mind, this morning.<\/p>\n<p>Why did God put the forbidden tree in the garden in the first place? Adam and Eve probably didn\u2019t have the ability to cause any problems, without the tree. However, when we think about the reason of placing this kind of tree in the garden, we realize that there was no way to measure how much Adam and Eve trust God\u2019s word, and love God voluntary, without placing the tree like this. Only mankind was created \u201cin God\u2019s image\u201d, that is only mankind could build a relationship with God based on love and trust. Hence, God placed only one forbidden tree among countless trees.<\/p>\n<p>God let them rule over everything in the garden, and allowed them to eat the plants. That was the perfect situation, and they had more than enough food in which to live on. At that point, Adam and Eve were living \u201cfor better\u201d in the Garden of Eden.<\/p>\n<p>We know that David, the second king of Israel, was in the same situation as Adam and Eve when he committed adultery with a wife of his servant. At that time, the Army of the Israelites that David ruled was invincible, because God was with them. Therefore, King David himself didn\u2019t take charge in battles, any longer. Instead, one evening, he made a big mistake when he saw one of his servant\u2019s wives bathing from the roof, after he got up from his nap.<\/p>\n<p>Nathan\u2019s word points out David\u2019s big mistake, which has much in common with Adam and Eve, in the perfect situation.<br \/>\n12\u00a0The\u00a0Lord\u00a0sent Nathan\u00a0to David.\u00a0When he came to him,\u00a0he said, \u201cThere were two men in a certain town, one rich and the other poor.\u00a02\u00a0The rich man had a very large number of sheep and cattle,\u00a03\u00a0but the poor man had nothing except one little ewe lamb he had bought. He raised it, and it grew up with him and his children. It shared his food, drank from his cup and even slept in his arms. It was like a daughter to him.4\u00a0\u201cNow a traveler came to the rich man, but the rich man refrained from taking one of his own sheep or cattle to prepare a meal for the traveler who had come to him. Instead, he took the ewe lamb that belonged to the poor man and prepared it for the one who had<br \/>\ncome to him.\u201d (2 Samuel 12:1-4)<\/p>\n<p>King David was exceedingly wealthy, and he probably had everything he desired. However, he had an affair with his servant\u2019s wife, and she conceived his child. Then, David sent the servant to the front of a battle and let him die. We will omit the story about David, but he suffered greatly later in his life, because all of these things that he had done.<br \/>\nIn spite of being surrounded by countless, fruitful trees, Adam and Eve ate the fruit of the forbidden tree, and as a result, they felt fear and shame. They were banished from the Garden of Eden, and they wandered in the land. The details of how Adam and Eve lived their lives after that is not recorded in the Bible, but if they remembered when they lived in the Garden of Eden, they would probably say that \u201cThat was the best time of our lives. We had God\u2019s blessings. But, we took these blessings for granted, and ate the forbidden fruit.\u201d<br \/>\nDavid probably thought the same thing. \u201cThat was the best time in my life. God\u2019s blessings, upon me. But, I took for granted his blessings, and I had an affair with my servant\u2019s wife.\u201d David did realize that God\u2019s blessings were on him already.<br \/>\nWe will have a Thanksgiving service next week. As you can tell, we can\u2019t talk about Thanksgiving Day without thanking God. When we think about the mistakes made by Adam and Eve, and David despite being in the prefect environment, the only prescription to overcome the situation is to be thankful for the daily life we have. When we lose our gratitude to God for our blessings, the blessing moments can be far from the blessings. How did the serpent approach Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden? Yes, the serpent was dangling the feeling of \u201cdissatisfaction\u201d in front of them. In order to make Adam and Eve reach out for the fruit of forbidden tree, the only thing the serpent had to do was to remove their gratitude of God, and to make them feel the emotion dissatisfaction.<br \/>\nThe environment is very important to us, and we always search for a better environment. And, it\u2019s not a bad thing. However, we must keep in mind that we always have the feeling of deficiency and dissatisfaction within us, even if when we were in the perfect environment.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, we shall keep in mind that the only way to maintain \u201cfor better\u201d time, from the word, \u201cfor better or for worse\u201d, we must recognize God\u2019s blessings that we have every day, and keep being thankful to God.<\/p>\n<p>Psalm 103 is a song David wrote, probably later in his life after David experienced his mistake. He sings about the necessary thing for him, that he found through the experience.<br \/>\n1\u00a0Praise the\u00a0Lord,\u00a0my soul;<br \/>\nall my inmost being, praise his holy name.<br \/>\n2\u00a0Praise the\u00a0Lord,\u00a0my soul,<br \/>\nand forget not\u00a0all his benefits\u2014 (Psalm 103:1-2)<br \/>\nThere are a few words we almost skip over if you don\u2019t read it carefully. That is to whom David was saying \u201cPraise the\u00a0Lord. Praise his holy name. Praise the\u00a0Lord.\u201d<br \/>\nYes, he shouted to himself \u201cMy soul, my soul\u201d and \u201cto all my inmost being\u201d forget not all of God\u2019s benefits.<br \/>\nThe meaning of the words is to live our daily lives by not forgetting the good things God does for us, but always be thankful for them.<br \/>\nAnd, King Solomon, the son of King David, who grew up seeing his father\u2019s attitude as shown in this psalm, wrote the following words in Proverbs 4:20-23.<\/p>\n<p>20\u00a0My son,\u00a0pay attention to what I say;<br \/>\nturn your ear to my words.<br \/>\n21\u00a0Do not let them out of your sight,<br \/>\nkeep them within your heart;<br \/>\n22\u00a0for they are life to those who find them<br \/>\nand health to one\u2019s whole body.<br \/>\n23\u00a0Above all else, guard\u00a0your heart,<br \/>\nfor everything you do flows from it. (Proverbs 4:20-23)<\/p>\n<p>Bungoyaku seisyo\u6587\u8a9e\u8a33\u8056\u66f8(Literary translation) says, \u201cGuard your heart above all else \u201d *Just like NIV in English. Also, shinkaiyaku seisyo \u65b0\u6539\u8a33\u8056\u66f8 (New Revised Version) says,\u00a0\u201cWith all your power, guard, and watch over your heart.\u201d That is to say, To guard your own heart is the first priority over all other things so that you need to guard your heart with all your power.<\/p>\n<p>I assume that King Solomon heard the words that his father, David, was telling his own soul all of the time. No, the things come out from there would drive us into a predicament. On the other hand, what does happen if the water springs out from our hearts filled with gratitude?
