is more than eating and drinking<\/p>\n<p>-&#0160;&#0160;&#0160;&#0160;&#0160;&#0160;<br \/>\nEaster message &#8211;<\/p>\n<p>&#0160;<\/p>\n<p>March 31, 2013<\/p>\n<p>&#0160;Our<br \/>\nlife is very busy and is filled with such routines as: \u201cWhat do I cook for<br \/>\ndinner?\u201d&#0160; \u201cI have to take my son to<br \/>\nfriend\u2019s birthday party today.\u201d Or \u201cToday, I have a dental checkup.\u201d &#0160;Perhaps this past week was like that also. And<br \/>\nwe are gathered again for this Sunday worship service.<\/p>\n<p>&#0160;But,<br \/>\nonce each year, we have a very special occasion to celebrate an amazing day<br \/>\ncalled Easter when we commemorate the most amazing event when Jesus was<br \/>\ncrucified, buried, and was resurrected from the dead. This most amazing event,<br \/>\nnamely that Jesus came back to life after death, was so extraordinary that<br \/>\npeople could not believe it, not only in the days of Jesus,&#0160; not at any time since, and not even today.<\/p>\n<p>&#0160;Matthew<br \/>\n22:23 mentions the same thing that is mentioned in Mark and Luke also. Namely, \u201dThat same day the Sadducees, who say<br \/>\nthere is no resurrection, came to [Jesus] with a question. \u201c Sadducees were well<br \/>\neducated and were wealthy among the Jewish people in the days of Jesus. They<br \/>\nsaid there is no afterlife, spirit, or angels.<\/p>\n<p>&#0160;Acts<br \/>\n17:32 records that when Paul talked about resurrection of Jesus to the people<br \/>\nof Athens, they responded with skepticism: some of<br \/>\nthem sneered, and others said, \u201cWe want to hear you again<br \/>\non this subject.\u201d &#0160;Not only that, even some of the early Christians refused to<br \/>\nbelieve in the resurrection of Jesus. I Corinthians 15:12 says:\u201d some of you say that<br \/>\nthere is no resurrection of the dead\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#0160;But,<br \/>\nPaul never gave up and continued to talk about the resurrection of Jesus. His<br \/>\nconviction is recorded in I Corinthian 15:3-9: <sup>3<\/sup>For<br \/>\nwhat I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for<br \/>\nour sins according to the Scriptures, <sup>4<\/sup>that he was buried, that<br \/>\nhe was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, <sup>5<\/sup>and<br \/>\nthat he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. <sup>6<\/sup>After that, he<br \/>\nappeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of<br \/>\nwhom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. <sup>7<\/sup>Then he<br \/>\nappeared to James, then to all the apostles, <sup>8<\/sup>and<br \/>\nlast of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born. <sup>9<\/sup>For I<br \/>\nam the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle,<br \/>\nbecause I persecuted the church of God.<\/p>\n<p>&#0160;What<br \/>\nis Paul saying here? Paul said what is most important is that Christ died for<br \/>\nour sins, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day, and that he<br \/>\nappeared to many people after that. This was the absolute truth that Paul could<br \/>\nnot deny. In fact, the entire faith of the Christians over history of 2000<br \/>\nyears has been centered and based upon this same belief. All of the Christian<br \/>\nchurches in the entire world, over 2 billion Christians, and one third of the<br \/>\nentire world population believe in the resurrection of Jesus in the same way.<br \/>\nAll of them stand by this belief.<\/p>\n<p>&#0160;Paul<br \/>\nwent on to point out how crucial this belief is to us all. See what Paul said<br \/>\nin Verses 13-20: <sup>13<\/sup>If there is no resurrection of the dead,<br \/>\nthen not even Christ has been raised. <sup>14<\/sup>And if Christ has not been<br \/>\nraised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. (I Corinthians 15:13-14)&#0160; <sup>19<\/sup>If only for this life we have hope in<br \/>\nChrist, we are to be pitied more than all men. <sup>20<\/sup>But Christ has<br \/>\nindeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen<br \/>\nasleep. (I Corinthians<br \/>\n15:19-20)<\/p>\n<p>&#0160;Paul<br \/>\nsaid that if Christ did not rise from the dead, our faith is meaningless and we<br \/>\nare to be pitied more than all men.<\/p>\n<p>&#0160;Remember<br \/>\nthe musician Mr. Mori who visited our church? He said he used to live in<br \/>\nNashville with young people who called themselves as Christians and who used to<br \/>\ntell him \u201cJesus loves you.\u201d Mr. Mori pitied them and thought he could save<br \/>\nthese misguided souls. That is why he started studying the Bible in order to<br \/>\nsave them. But, these days, Mr. Mori is conveying that most important message<br \/>\nby Paul to the world himself.<\/p>\n<p>&#0160;Paul<br \/>\nalso wrote in Verse 32: If the dead are not raised, \u201cLet us eat and<br \/>\ndrink, for tomorrow we die.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#0160;Paul<br \/>\nsays if death marks the end of everything, why not live today in worldly<br \/>\npleasure? If we are destined to die and return to dust anyway, why not enjoy<br \/>\npleasures of this world before that? The end might come suddenly, perhaps<br \/>\ntomorrow. So, why not do what we want and what pleases us &#8212; even if it might<br \/>\nbother other people, cause some people to cry, or harm others? Nietzsche said<br \/>\nif we are to live without God, that would take us to nihility. This is exactly what<br \/>\nPaul was talking about.<\/p>\n<p>&#0160;But,<br \/>\nPaul was convinced about the \u201cresurrection of Jesus Christ.\u201d And he was convinced<br \/>\nthat he would also be given the eternal life. That is why he did not give up<br \/>\nhis life ever. He did not lose hope even in the most hopeless situations. He<br \/>\nhad incurable disease. But he accepted that and lived his life to the fullest.<\/p>\n<p>Why<br \/>\ncould he do that? In Verses 57 and 58, he reveals why: <sup>57<\/sup>But thanks be to<br \/>\nGod! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. <sup>58<\/sup>Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move<br \/>\nyou. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that<br \/>\nyour labor in the Lord is not in vain.<\/p>\n<p>&#0160;Paul was not talking to Jesus sleeping in the tomb. He was<br \/>\ntalking to Jesus who had risen from the dead. And Paul was not alone in<br \/>\nbelieving resurrection of Jesus. If Paul was the only person believing this, we<br \/>\ncould dismiss him as simply a misfit individual believing in fantasy. But,<br \/>\nthere were many, many people back then who also believed that all labor in the<br \/>\nLord is not in vain. How strong was their conviction? If sacrifices they were<br \/>\nwilling to take were any measure of their conviction, they were willing to give<br \/>\nup their own life. They believed in the resurrection of Jesus, they found hope<br \/>\nin it, and they were convinced that their life was not in vain.<\/p>\n<p>&#0160;The<br \/>\nauthor of the Letter to the Hebrews describes such people in this way:<\/p>\n<p><sup>13<\/sup>All these people were still living by<br \/>\nfaith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw<br \/>\nthem and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens<br \/>\nand strangers on earth. <sup>14<\/sup>People who say such things show that they<br \/>\nare looking for a country of their own. <sup>15<\/sup>If they had been thinking<br \/>\nof the country they had left, they would have had opportunity to return. <sup>16<\/sup>Instead,<br \/>\nthey were longing for a better country\u2014a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed<br \/>\nto be called their God, for he has prepared a city for them. (Hebrews 11:13-16)<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#0160;<\/strong>When we read<br \/>\nsuch Bible verses, we are reminded of the poems Mr. Tomihiro Hoshino wrote. As<br \/>\nyou know, Mr. Hoshino was a gym teacher. 40 years ago, he fell off the horizontal<br \/>\nbar and was paralyzed neck down. But, he was baptized during his stay in<br \/>\nhospital, and he learned to write by holding a pen in his mouth. He drew<br \/>\npictures and wrote poems in that manner. One of his poems says: &#0160;\u201cMy life was hard when I tried to cling on to<br \/>\nlife. But, my life was filled with joy when I learned there is something more<br \/>\nprecious than life itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#0160;<\/p>\n<p>These people believed<br \/>\nin the hope of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. They were ordinary people like<br \/>\nus. The life of these people had two stages. During the first stage, they thought<br \/>\nthat \u201clife is most important\u201d and they mind was filled with anxiety. &#0160;But, then, they learned that there is<br \/>\nsomething more precious than life itself. &#0160;That is the eternal life given to us through<br \/>\nthe resurrection of Jesus. When they learned about this, their life was filled<br \/>\nwith joy and happiness. From that moment, their second stage of life was filled<br \/>\nwith bright light.<\/p>\n<p>&#0160;Easter is the<br \/>\ntime when we reconfirm that there is something more important than life. And,<br \/>\nwhen we realize that, our daily life changes completely. Our life is filled<br \/>\nwith internal peace and joy.
