Urges Us by His Mercy<\/p>\n<p>March 11<sup>th<\/sup> 2018<\/p>\n<p>Including Japan and the United States, many people all over the world are interested in \u201ceducation\u201d.\u00a0 Especially, in the kind of education that the younger generation receives because it greatly impacts the country\u2019s future.\u00a0 Although education does not provide immediate benefits to the country, surely we have learned that it has a large long-term influence in forming our country and our society.<\/p>\n<p>In 1987, there was a conference at Harvard University for higher education educators.\u00a0 At the conference, Frank Rose, the president of Cornell University at the time, proposed an education reform.\u00a0 He said to the audience \u201cWe are reaching the point that Universities should pay more attention to students\u2019 \u201csound values\u201d and \u201chealthy moral values\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Immediately the audience started to be noisy and criticized him.\u00a0 Then, a student stood up and said, \u201cWhose sense of values are you going to teach us?\u00a0 Who is going to deliver the teaching?\u201d\u00a0 The audience enthusiastically applauded the student\u2019s statement.\u00a0 Mr. Rose went back to his seat without answering any questions.<\/p>\n<p>Why did the audience strongly disagree? Because they defined \u201csense of values\u201d as a \u201cpersonal matter\u201d, and each one of us should decide \u201cwhat we should do and shouldn\u2019t do\u201d based on our own moral standard.\u00a0 \u00a0Therefore, the audience didn\u2019t want others to lecture them regarding \u201csense of values\u201d or \u201cmorality\u201d.\u00a0 They want to live as they please, because that\u2019s what we defined \u201cfreedom\u201d in today\u2019s world.<\/p>\n<p>This conference was held in 1987, meaning, it happened 31 years ago.\u00a0 Not only has our \u201csense of values\u201d and \u201cmorality\u201d not changed since then, but more people support the audience\u2019s ways of thinking all over the world.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, this way of thinking is nothing new, but it has been around since the ancient times.\u00a0 The book of Judges in the Old Testament records as the following. \u00a0In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit. (Judges 21:25)<\/p>\n<p>The kind of world that this way of thinking creates is recorded in Judges.\u00a0 That\u2019s right.\u00a0 The time of the book of Judges was an especially chaotic era in the history of the Bible.\u00a0 Keep this in mind, and let\u2019s look at the verses from Roman chapter 12 again.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, I urge you,\u00a0brothers and sisters, in view of God\u2019s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice,\u00a0holy and pleasing to God\u2014this is your true and proper worship.\u00a0<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>Do not conform\u00a0to the pattern of this world,\u00a0but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.\u00a0Then you will be able to test and approve what God\u2019s will is\u2014his good, pleasing\u00a0and perfect will. (Romans 12:1-2)<\/p>\n<p>Everyone, we are looking at Mr. Rose\u2019s words of advice and Paul\u2019s words of advice in the verses.\u00a0 Did you realize that there is a difference between in these two views?<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Rose urged his opinions.\u00a0 I assume that his opinions were based on his experiences as an educator; therefore, I believe they were not irresponsible opinions.<\/p>\n<p>However, when Mr. Rose urged his opinions \u201cIt should be this way\u201d, the audience responded \u201cNo.\u201d\u00a0 \u201cLeave us alone, who can lecture us on \u201csense of values\u201d and \u201cmorality?\u201d\u00a0 And then, Mr. Rose couldn\u2019t answer their objections.\u00a0 Why was that?\u00a0 I\u2019ve thought about the reason.\u00a0 Because he, too, is a human just like the audience.\u00a0 \u201cHow could a human just like us lecture us on his sense of values? How could he teach what\u2019s right and wrong to us?\u201d\u00a0 There is no way to respond to these questions.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, Paul urged God\u2019s mercy.\u00a0 That\u2019s the difference between Mr. Rose\u2019s advice and Paul\u2019s advice. There is a great difference in between these two.\u00a0 Paul\u2019s advice is with \u201cGod\u2019s mercy\u201d not his \u201cown thoughts\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, even though the advice is done \u201cin God\u201d, we know that we can simply choose to ignore it, stand against it, or reject it.<\/p>\n<p>We, Japanese people, have a negative legacy towards the subject \u201cGod\u201d from World War II.\u00a0 Because, within a day, the Japanese people\u2019s point of view had to change from \u201cThe Emperor is God\u201d to \u201cThe Emperor is a human\u201d.\u00a0 Therefore, we are extremely cautious towards the word \u201cGod\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Ever since, we don\u2019t take seriously about God, rather, we avoid dealing with the subject.\u00a0 I have heard the following scenario from many individuals.\u00a0 When they told their parents that \u201cRecently, I started to go to a Christian church.\u201d, their parents said \u201c You might learn something valuable to you, but don\u2019t go too deep into it.\u201d Yet, we can\u2019t remove God\u2019s existence completely from our lives (because at heart we feel fear).\u00a0 We pray for God when we are in trouble, when we need God\u2019s help, and out of obligation we pray to God a few times a year.<\/p>\n<p>If your relationship with your God is just to accomplish moderate obligation, you won\u2019t obey his word.\u00a0 Rather, you live as you please, and only when you are suffering, you say \u201cI rely on you, God.\u201d It is much easier to be carefree; More than we can imagine, we value being carefree.<\/p>\n<p>However, for those, who believe in God\u2019s existence without doubt, they can\u2019t ignore the word of advice with God\u2019s mercy.\u00a0 Because obeying God\u2019s word has great meaning to them, and even as time has passed, the word remains unchanged. Furthermore, we believe that this advice tells us what the best way of living on this earth is.<\/p>\n<p>We need the sense of values, which is not what we conveniently created by ourselves, but what we are given from up there (in heaven).\u00a0 In the world of \u201ceverything is ok.\u201d, what we really need is unshakable things like this.<\/p>\n<p>Nowadays, we often hear the word \u201cmotivation\u201d.\u00a0 Athletes often use the word when they retire in their prime.\u00a0 Such as \u201cI lost my motivation, therefore, I have decided to retire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After a big competition such as the recent Olympics, I think many athletes tend to struggle with things like this.\u00a0 For the last 4 years, their focus was to perform their best at the Olympics, but that is over.\u00a0 What\u2019s now?\u00a0 Are they going to aim to be in the next Olympics in 4 years?\u00a0 If they can\u2019t find something to make them inspired, it\u2019s going to be difficult to face the hard training for the next 4 years because they don\u2019t have the motivation.<\/p>\n<p>One motivation for high school students to study hard is go to the college they want to go to.\u00a0 Someone, who is trying to lose 20 more pounds, has motivation to fit in the clothes he\/she wants to wear.\u00a0 For baseball players, high school students, trying to enter the college, to someone, on a diet, we all are moved by motivation.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone, let\u2019s read today\u2019s scripture again. \u00a0Paul urges us in the following:<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, I urge you,\u00a0brothers and sisters, in view of God\u2019s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice,\u00a0holy and pleasing to God\u2014this is your true and proper worship.\u00a0<sup>2\u00a0<\/sup>Do not conform\u00a0to the pattern of this world,\u00a0but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.\u00a0Then you will be able to test and approve what God\u2019s will is\u2014his good, pleasing\u00a0and perfect will. (Romans 12:1-2)<\/p>\n<p>If we receive this advice as an obligation, we won\u2019t last long.\u00a0 However, these words have something to motivate us.\u00a0 That is \u201cGod\u2019s mercy on us\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, what is the motivation for us to obey God\u2019s teaching when we live as Christians?\u00a0 Do you think that God will protect us from various disasters because we are Christians?\u00a0 Or, do you think that God will help us reach our dreams or goals?<\/p>\n<p>If a Christian has these motivations, one day the person will get stuck in his\/her situation because even to Christians, unexpected events happen time to time. All of your goals can not necessarily be achieved, and if you have perfunctory faith, you always have sense of obligation.<\/p>\n<p>Paul first said \u201cGod\u2019s mercy\u201d.\u00a0 \u201cGod\u2019s mercy\u201d, in other words, is \u201cGod\u2019s blessing\u201d.\u00a0 Why did people in the Bible happily serve God?\u00a0 It is because they got to know God\u2019s blessings.\u00a0\u00a0 That became their motivation.\u00a0 Faith is not \u201cI must to do things\u201d, but Faith is \u201cI can\u2019t help not doing things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Apostle, Paul said in I Timothy 1: 13-16.<\/p>\n<p><sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>Even though I was once a blasphemer and a persecutor\u00a0and a violent man, I was shown mercy\u00a0because I acted in ignorance and unbelief.\u00a0<sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>The grace of our Lord was poured out on me abundantly,\u00a0along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.<\/p>\n<p><sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>Here is a trustworthy saying\u00a0that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners\u2014of whom I am the worst.<sup>16\u00a0<\/sup>But for that very reason I was shown mercy\u00a0so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience\u00a0as an example for those who would believe\u00a0in him and receive eternal life. (1Timothy 1:13-16)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He was once a man who arrested Christians and murdered them.\u00a0 Therefore, there is no room for excuses for him.\u00a0 However, God had bottomless mercy on him. Without doubt, Christ came to this world to save sinners.\u00a0 And, among those sinners, Paul declared himself as the worst of sinners.\u00a0 He knew well about God\u2019s mercy shown to him.<\/p>\n<p>He also said God showed him \u201cimmense patience\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0 Unquestionably, God showed immense patience to Paul because he was persecuting Christians. We talk like it is someone else\u2019s business.<\/p>\n<p>However, once you ponder in your heart, not only to Paul, but God also shows immense patience with you.\u00a0 How long have we turned our backs against God?\u00a0 We have God in our lives only when it\u2019s convenient for us and when we need him.\u00a0 Once it\u2019s over, we just leave God aside and forget about him until we need him again.\u00a0 If you do the same thing to your spouse, I am sure that he or she will get fed up with you.<\/p>\n<p>But, God doesn\u2019t leave us.\u00a0 He lets us live today, and he gives us our daily bread. He continues to give us an opportunity to live our lives with God.\u00a0 Therefore, God also shows his immense patience with us, just like he did to Paul.<\/p>\n<p>And, the more Paul knew about God\u2019s patience and mercy on him, the more he desired to live for God, from the bottom of his heart.\u00a0 Paul said, \u201cYou also receive God\u2019s mercy just like me. Therefore, offer your bodies as a living sacrifice,\u00a0holy and pleasing to God.\u00a0 That is not out of an obligation, but that is a natural response to God\u2019s blessings\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>In the past, I saw a movie called \u201cAmazing Grace\u201d.\u00a0 In the movie, a young politician called William Wilberforce was steering anti-slave\u00a0trade legislation.\u00a0 And, The Hymn Amazing Grace\u2019s writer, John Newton, who lived at the same period, gave advice to Wilberforce.<\/p>\n<p>In the movie, Before Newton loses his eye sight at old age and his memory fades away, Newton told Wilberforce his experiences to testify what he has done in the past, and he made Wilberforce record diary entries.\u00a0 What kind of experiences did he have?\u00a0 I read some documents written about Newton as the following.<\/p>\n<p>The English man, John Newton went to sea at an early age, and he sailed to Africa. \u00a0The reason was, as he wrote in his autobiography later on, \u201cto commit crime to my heart\u2019s content\u201d. His life was going downhill, and he kept falling down.\u00a0 And, he became the captain of a slave ship carrying slaves from Africa to the New World. \u00a0I can imagine that Newton did many things other than \u201ctransport slaves\u201d because he said that he had a spirit \u201cto commit crime to his heart\u2019s content\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The ship he was on was hit by a violent storm in the North Atlantic Ocean, and it almost sank. You don\u2019t feel hardship as hardship.\u00a0 You might go home with strong reluctance, wishing you could keep working.<\/p>\n<p>We all want to get such a job if we get a job anyway.\u00a0 Work is only one part of your life. However, don\u2019t you want to live your life including the time you spend at work, motivated by joy, thankfulness, and something worth doing, even if you encounter many hardships, from time to time?<\/p>\n<p>Yes, what we need in order to do that is to realize God\u2019s bottomless blessings upon all of the people, and to live with his blessings.\u00a0 This motivation doesn\u2019t have to renew every four years like Olympic athletes, but it moves us until we return to the heaven.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, Paul was changed and accomplished his life by God\u2019s blessings.
