things God works for the good<br \/>\nDecember 30, 2018<\/p>\n<p>Today is our last Sunday of the year. I thank God that we had worship service together past year, and we are looking forward to the new year by looking at the Bible verses.<\/p>\n<p>I want to visit one mountain. The name of the mountain is Nebo in Jordan, and there is a monument on the top of the mountain. Do you know what this is? Yes, it is a staff of Moses who is the leader of Israel. He led Israel free from the slavery of Egypt. Moses stood alone on the mountain about 3500 years ago. He was 120 years old at that time and passed away on the mountain.<\/p>\n<p>Deuteronomy 34:1 said, Then Moses climbed Mount Nebo\u00a0from the plains of Moab to the top of Pisgah,\u00a0across from Jericho.\u00a0There the\u00a0Lord\u00a0showed\u00a0him the whole land\u2014from Gilead to Dan (Deuteronomy 34:1)<\/p>\n<p>Moses could see two things from the top of the mountain. He could see two directions from there. One was the way he walked from and the other the land ahead he had not yet been to.<\/p>\n<p>When he looked back, the most far he could see was the days he spent at Egypt as a prince. He was there till the age of 40 and ran away to the desert and lived there for 40 more years, and decided to save the Israelites and took a journey the next 40 years to reach the promised land, and as his final point, he was now standing on the mountain.<\/p>\n<p>His life was eventful. His life, especially the days he leads a couple of millions of stubborn Israelites was full of trial and challenge, but he still had hope and the hope was the land God will give to them. The land was promised to their ancestor Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. They went through hardships and trials to enter and conquer the land. Moses was seeing the land of Canan from the mountain.<\/p>\n<p>But God told him,<strong><sup>4\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong><strong>Then the Lord\u00a0said to him, \u201cThis is the land I promised on oath\u00a0to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob\u00a0when I said, \u2018I will give it\u00a0to your descendants.\u2019 I have let you see it with your eyes, but <u>you will not cross\u00a0over into it.<\/u>\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To begin with, why was Moses not able to enter the promised land? Because Moses failed before God.<\/p>\n<p>Numbers 20:3-6 wrote about the incident. Yes, this had happened in the wilderness of Zin. Moses and the people of Israel did not have water and murmured to Moses as they had always done.<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>3\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong><strong>They quarreled\u00a0with Moses and said, \u201cIf only we had died when our brothers fell dead\u00a0before the\u00a0Lord!\u00a0<sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>Why did you bring the\u00a0Lord\u2019s community into this wilderness,\u00a0that we and our livestock should die here?\u00a0<sup>5\u00a0<\/sup>Why did you bring us up out of Egypt to this terrible place? It has no grain or figs, grapevines or pomegranates.\u00a0And there is no water to drink!\u201d <sup>6\u00a0<\/sup>Moses and Aaron went from the assembly to the entrance to the tent of meeting\u00a0and fell facedown,\u00a0and the glory of the\u00a0Lord\u00a0appeared to them (Numbers 20:3-6).\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>God responded to their murmur in His glory and ordered Moses to <u>speak to the rock<\/u> before their eyes and it will pour out its water but Moses had a bitter feeling toward the people and <u>struck the rock<\/u> twice with his staff and water gushed out.<\/p>\n<p>God spoke to Moses, <strong><sup>12\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong><strong> \u201cBecause you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy\u00a0in the sight of the Israelites, <u>you will not bring this community into the land I give them<\/u>.\u201d <\/strong><strong>(Numbers 20:12).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>God asked Moses to speak to the rock but Moses struck the rock twice with his staff. This is why the staff is the monument at the Nebo mountain.<\/p>\n<p>Because of this incident, Moses could not enter the promised land. He lost his purpose during his journey, this was really disappointing, but Moses kept leading the people until he finally came to the point just barely in front of the promised land where he was not allowed to enter. How can we accept his life?<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the year, if we are climbing the mountain this past year and now standing on the top of the mountain, we can see both the way we came here and the direction where we are going. Some of you might be in the situation of Moses. How can we accept our life?<\/p>\n<p>Romans chapter 8 said; <strong><sup>28\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong><strong>And we know that in all things God works for the good\u00a0of those who love him, who\u00a0have been called\u00a0according to his purpose.\u00a0<sup>29\u00a0<\/sup>For those God foreknew\u00a0he also predestined\u00a0to be conformed to the image of his Son,\u00a0that he might be the firstborn\u00a0among many brothers and sisters.\u00a0<sup>30\u00a0<\/sup>And those<\/strong> <strong>he predestined,\u00a0he also called;\u00a0those he called, he also justified;\u00a0those he justified, he also glorified (Romans 8:28-30).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Is this verse true for the life of Moses who could not accomplish his vision? How about yours? Do you think God works all things for the good in your life? What do you think?<\/p>\n<p>We have to make sure we know what the good things are. If the good things are different from what we are thinking and wishing, we are totally misunderstanding the meaning of this verse. If we justify the good things for our wishes and dreams to come true, for Moses case, his dream did not come true, this verse does not apply to his life.<\/p>\n<p>Well then, what is the meaning of the good thing in this verse. Let us look at the following verse after verse 28. <strong><sup>29\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong><strong>For those God foreknew\u00a0he also predestined\u00a0to be conformed to the image of his Son,\u00a0that he might be the firstborn\u00a0among many brothers and sisters.\u00a0<\/strong>This is the good thing God is talking about. Yes, it is good if we conform to the image of His Son, Jesus Christ. \u00a0The Japanese Bible says the good thing is for us be like Christ.<\/p>\n<p>Numbers mention about the character of Moses <strong>&#8220;Moses was a very humble man,\u00a0more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth&#8221;.<\/strong> Humbleness must be his character from birth and also acquired throughout his life. Without the humbleness, it would have been difficult to keep listening to the murmur of the people for years.<\/p>\n<p>Jesus Christ once said about his humbleness like this.<strong>&#8220;<sup>29\u00a0<\/sup>Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,\u00a0for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls&#8221; <\/strong>(Matthew 11:29).<\/p>\n<p>The humbleness is the character of Christ. Moses struck the rock because of the stubbornness of the people, but when Jesus was oppressed\u00a0and afflicted, he did not open his mouth; he was like a lamb\u00a0to the slaughter, and as a lamb before its shearers is silent,\u00a0so he did not open his mouth (Isaiah 53:7) .<\/p>\n<p>Moses was humble but it was not like Christ. Therefore he had failed. He did not enter the promised land but the failure made him introspective and made Moses more humble.<\/p>\n<p>Romans 29 says <strong>For those God foreknew\u00a0he also predestined\u00a0to be conformed to the image of his Son.<\/strong> The Japanese Bible says &#8220;God makes you more and more like Christ. Moses was a very humble man,\u00a0more humble than anyone else on the face of the earth&#8221; but he went through the trial to be more like Jesus. As Jesus said &#8220;<strong><sup>29\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong><strong>Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls<\/strong> \u00a0(Matthew 11:29).<\/p>\n<p>For Moses, the proclamation must have been shocking because he lost what he had been looking for, but after he found his vision will not come true and just before the climb up the mount Nebo and die, he spoke his life testimony to the people.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<strong>I will proclaim\u00a0the name of the\u00a0Lord. Oh, praise the greatness\u00a0of our God! <sup>4\u00a0<\/sup>He is the Rock,\u00a0his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God\u00a0who does no wrong, upright\u00a0and just is he<\/strong> (Deuteronomy 32:3,4).<\/p>\n<p>Even though he could not enter the promised land, he testified that God is the Rock, Gods works are perfect, and all his ways are just. Moses did not make any excuses at all. He was a humble man, but God made him more humble, and that means he became more like Jesus. Indeed in all things God works for the good.<\/p>\n<p>Dear brothers and sisters, when we understand &#8220;His good things&#8221;, our viewpoint toward life will be changed. Even though we will have experience of defeat or humiliation in our life, if these things make us change to be like Christ, there will be good things for us.<\/p>\n<p>Some of you still might think about the promised land and think Moses was sad and miserable. I will share the story in the Bible. It was the time of Jesus 1500 years later after Moses.<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>29\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong><strong>As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning.\u00a0<sup>30\u00a0<\/sup>Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus.\u00a0<sup>31\u00a0<\/sup>They spoke about his departure, which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem (Luke 9:29-31). \u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Where did this happen? It was in the promised land that Moses was yearning to enter 1500 years ago. He did not enter the land as an elder man, but he is now glorified and stood on the land with Elijah to discuss an important plan with Jesus.<\/p>\n<p><strong><sup>28\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong><strong>And we know that in all things God works for the good\u00a0of those who love him, who\u00a0have been called\u00a0according to his purpose.\u00a0<sup>29\u00a0<\/sup>For those God foreknew\u00a0he also predestined\u00a0to be conformed to the image of his Son,\u00a0that he might be the firstborn\u00a0among many brothers and sisters.\u00a0<sup>30\u00a0<\/sup>And those he predestined,\u00a0he also called;\u00a0those he called, he also justified;\u00a0those he justified, he also glorified (Romans 8:28-30).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>God fulfilled His promise to Moses which is mentioned in verse 30 .<strong><sup>30\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong><strong>And those he predestined,\u00a0he also called;\u00a0those he called, he also justified;\u00a0those he justified, he also glorified<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Moses himself, and we also think how pity Moses was. Yes, he did the mistake. But still, it seems cruel for us. But God gave His glory to Moses and made him stand on the promised land. We think where we were going and where we are visiting was very important at that moment, but it does not matter when we think about it later. God had a different plan and He accomplished what he had promised to Moses.<\/p>\n<p>Dear brothers and sisters, we should not be wrapped up in the things that are small. Do not squeeze everything into your brain. Indeed, Romans 28 is the truth and God works beyond our thought.<\/p>\n<p>As we are now at the end of this year, I ask you, what was your past year like? What is God speaking to us through our incomprehensible incident? Do you believe that in all things God works for the good\u00a0of those who love him?
