もし今日、私の上に神の力が注がれて、どんな病の人間をも癒すことができるようになったらなら、私は今月中にCNNに出演してアンダーソン・クーパーからインタビューを受けていることでしょう。そして、おそらく二週間後には、皆さんはこの礼拝に来る時にパーキング・スペースを見つけることや、この礼拝堂の中に空席を見つけることはできないでしょう。奇跡と呼ばれるもの、特に、肉体の癒しというのはそれほどに私達を魅了するものです。
では、そうであるのならなぜ、神様は世界の全ての牧師にその力を与えないのでしょうか。神にとってそれは「そんな小さなこと」なのですから、その力を私達がいただけたらどんなに素晴らしいでしょうか。そうしましたら全世界の教会は大盛況です。あちこちに立派な教会堂が建てあがることでしょうし、、教会はスタッフを雇用して２４時間体制、やがて牧師たちは世界中の病院から病院専属のチヤプレンにならないかと勧誘を受けることでしょう。
最初のうちは牧師も「こうして私が人の病を癒すことができるのはイエス・キリストのおかげです」と話すことでしょう。しかし、それが続くとどうでしょうか。自分が手をおいて祈る方の病が目の前でことごとく癒されていくのです。こんな牧師がいたら皆さんはどうなることでしょうか。やがて奇跡がなされる度に「牧師さん、そうは言っても実際にその奇跡をしているのはあなたなのですから」と人はその牧師を崇め始めるでしょう。最初は礼拝から来ていた人達も、礼拝後に癒しをしてくれるというので、礼拝が終わった頃に教会にやってくることでしょう。
そのうち、牧師も人間、勘違いをし始めて、礼拝はやめて、朝から癒しましょうということになり、そのうち私は天から来た神の使者なのだと言いだす人も出てくることでしょう。
こうなるとどうなるのですか。この肉体の癒しを通して、それが癒されて喜ぶ人の中から、イエス・キリストの前に罪を悔い改めて、神の子となる人が起こされていきますか。いいえ、人々の奇跡に対する熱狂が最も大切な聖書のメッセージを吹き飛ばし、主イエス・キリストの教えがあちらの教会、こちらの教会でも確実に失われていくのです。

「奇跡はここにあります」

46イエスは、またガリラヤのカナに行かれた。そこは、かつて水をぶどう酒にかえられた所である。ところが、病気をしているむすこを持つある役人がカペナウムにいた。47この人が、ユダヤからガリラヤにイエスのきておられることを聞き、みもとにきて、カペナウムに下って、彼の子をなおしていただきたいと願った。その子が死にかかっていたからである。48そこで、イエスは彼に言われた、「あなたがたは、しるしと奇跡とを見ない限り、決して信じないだろう」。49この役人はイエスに言った、「主よ、どうぞ、子供が死なないうちにきて下さい」。50イエスは彼に言われた、「お帰りなさい。あなたのむすこは助かるのだ」。彼は自分に言われたイエスの言葉を信じて帰って行った。51その下って行く途中、僕たちが彼に出会い、その子が助かったことを告げた。52そこで、彼は僕たちに、そのなおりはじめた時刻を尋ねてみたら、「きのうの午後一時に熱が引きました」と答えた。53それは、イエスが「あなたのむすこは助かるのだ」と言われたのと同じ時刻であったことを、この父は知って、彼自身もその家族一同も信じた。54これは、イエスがユダヤからガリラヤにきてなされた第二のしるしである（ヨハネ４章４６節－５４節）。
カナという土地を覚えているでしょうか。そうです、ヨハネ２書に記録されているイエス・キリストが一番最初になされた奇跡が記されている町です。その時、イエス様は婚宴に招かれていて、その所で尽きてしまったブドウ酒に対して、水をブドウ酒に変える奇跡を起こしたということを七月の礼拝メッセージでお話しました。その時に「味気ない水を味わい深いブドウ酒」に変えてくださったイエス様は、「私達の人生も味わい深い人生」に変えてくださるお方であり、このイエス様は私達が各々の人生を喜び生きることを願っているとお話しました。
その同じ場所で、また一つの出来事が起こりました。ヨハネはそれを第二番目のしるしだとここに記しています。すなわち、その氏名は記されておりませんが、一人の役人の息子が死にかかっていたというのです。かつて婚礼がなされた、その同じ町で、この度は人の病と死という出来事が起きたのです。この二つの出来事こそ、私達の人生の現実をあらわしています。一つは喜びであり、一つは悲しみです。そして、イエス様はその両方に関わられたのです。「揺りかごから墓場」までと言いますが、まさしくイエス様は私達の誕生から死にいたるまで私達の人生に関わりをもってくださるお方なのです。そして、そのイエスを主とする教会も、生まれた子供の献児式から、結婚式、そしてお葬式にいたるまでキリストの名のもとに人の人生に関わる場所なのです。さて、それでは今日の出来事を通してイエス様の姿を見て参りましょう。まず第一のことをお話します。それは「お金で解決できないこと」ということです。
お金で解決できないこと。
このカナで起きた出来事に関して、限られた記録の中でいくつかのことを私達はうかがい知ることができます。まず、この父親は「役人」であったということです。当時の社会情勢を考えますと、誰も彼も役人になれたわけではありませんから、それは一つの特権階級であったと思われます。ですから、それなりの地位と生活の保障も与えられていたことでありましょう。言うならば、他の一般的な庶民よりも安定した生活をしていたことでありましょう。
しかし、その彼ですら我が子の命に関しては何もすることができなかったのです。否、彼は確かに自分ができうることは何でもしたことでありましょう。しかし、それでも息子の命に対しては無力だったのです。
この父親の状況と私達の今日の状況はほとんど変わりません。もちろん、違うのは当時は確かにアスピリンやMRIはなかったということで、明らかに今日の医療と当時の治療では天と地の差があることでしょう。しかしながら、どんなに最先端の医療があっても、その治療のために膨大なお金が使われたとしても、そのお金で必ず命を救うことができるかというと、そういうわけにはいきません。あのマイケル・ジャクソンにしても、アップルの創業者、スティーブ・ジョブスも、自らの命のために無尽蔵のお金を使うことはできたでしょうか、彼らは若くして召されていきました。
イエス様はあの有名な譬えを語られました。16「ある金持の畑が豊作であった。17そこで彼は心の中で、『どうしようか、わたしの作物をしまっておく所がないのだが』と思いめぐらして18言った、『こうしよう。わたしの倉を取りこわし、もっと大きいのを建てて、そこに穀物や食糧を全部しまい込もう。19そして自分の魂に言おう。たましいよ、おまえには長年分の食糧がたくさんたくわえてある。さあ安心せよ、食え、飲め、楽しめ』。20すると神が彼に言われた、『愚かな者よ、あなたの魂は今夜のうちにも取り去られるであろう。そしたら、あなたが用意した物は、だれのものになるのか』。（ルカ１２章１６節－２０節）
おそらくこのイエス様の言葉が何を言っているのか分からないという人はいないと思います。この言葉は間違ったことを言っておらず、確かなことを言っています。そうです、このことは確かに真理なのです。しかし、この真理を私達は心にとめずに毎日を生きています。神様へのインタビューという詩がありますが、その詩は神様にこう尋ねるのです。「人間のどんなところに、あなたは一番、驚いていますか」。神様は答えます「決して死ぬことがないかのように生き まるで生きていなかったかのように死んでいくこと」と。
そうです、私達はまるで自分は死ぬことがないかのように生きている時があります。特に健康が保たれている時などはそうでありましょう。しかし、この金持ちのように突然、その日は来るかもしれません。もう全てのことは準備万端。貯蓄も十分、働かずとも生活はできるのだ。そうです、それはそれで祝福ですから、素直に喜ばれたらいい。それまで一生懸命に働いてきた結果なのですから、それを楽しめばいいでしょう。しかし、その喜びや楽しみも“あること”について備えてからするのならば、もっと大きな喜びとなるはずです。それは何ですか。そうです、今夜にも取られる可能性のある私達の命に対する備えです。そして、その時に倉に貯めこんだものは何も役に立たず、しかも、現実はそれらを全て持参して死んでいくことはできないのです。
イエス様はこの話をされた後に、こう言われました。『25あなたがたのうち、だれが思いわずらったからとて、自分の寿命をわずかでも延ばすことができようか。26そんな小さな事さえできないのに、どうしてほかのことを思いわずらうのか』（ルカ１２章２５節－２６節）。
皆さん、私達も「そんな小さな事」について語ることがあります。先日、家の玄関にカタツムリが張りついていました。子供も妻もまるでモンスターに出会ったかのように大騒ぎです。でも、私にとって、カタツムリは小さい頃によく遊んだ虫ですから、それは「そんな小さな事」で、「あなたたちはいったい何を怖がっているのか」ということなのです。それに反して私はシャツにアイロンをかけることがままならない人間でして、私のシャツにスイスイとアイロンをかけてくれる妻にとりましてはアイロンをかけることは「そんな小さな事」なのです。
イエス様もここで「そんな小さな事」について言われています。それはエルサレムからエリコまで徒歩で歩くことができるというような「そんな小さな事」ではなく、「ガリラヤ湖でたくさんの魚を獲ることができる」というような「そんな小さな事」でもないのです。イエス様がここで言っている「そんな小さな事」とは、「私達の寿命を延ばす」ということなのです。言うまでもありません、イエス様にとって「そんな小さな事」は今の私達にとりましては大きな問題で、否、私達人類は今もこの大問題の前で全く無力であり、このことはお金で解決できることではないのです。二つ目のことをお話しましょう。それは「癒しがすべてではない」ということです。
癒しがすべてではない
聖書を読んでいますと、イエス・キリストは願われた肉体の癒しに関しては全て、その願いを聞き届け、癒しているということが分かります。イエス様は「あわれみ深い」お方ですから、肉体を病んでいる者が目の前におり、彼らがその痛みからの癒しを願うのなら、その願いをかなえてあげたのでありましょう。実際にこの役人の息子もイエスによって癒されるのです。

イエス様は確かに多くの人達の病を癒しました。そして、誰かの病が癒されますと、そのことは瞬く間にその村に知れ渡り、やがてはその村を超えてイスラエル全土にまでその名が知れ渡るようになりました。そして、続々と病をもつもの、悪霊につかれている者がイエス様のもとに押しかけてきたのです。物事には気運というものがあり、もし、イエス様がその群衆の願いに応答し続けていけば、そのことはやがてローマのカイザルの耳にまで届き、すぐにローマ帝国に優待されていったことでありましょう。枕するところもないというような、その生活から、当時の世界で最も豊かな建物の中に居を構えることもできたでしょうし、言うまでもなく、ローマの兵士に鞭で打たれることも、十字架にかかることもなかったでしょう。
しかし、イエス様の心ははっきりしていたのです。そのことのために私はこの地に来たのではないと！すなわち、それは病が癒されるということが私達の救いではないということです。このことを既に承知であったイエス様は今日見ております役人である父に言われたのです。『あなたがたは、しるしと奇跡とを見ない限り、決して信じないだろう』（ヨハネ４章４８節）。イエス様は人の心をお見通しでした。そして、イエス様がこう言われたように、実際にイエス様を取り巻く人間達も、まさしくこの思いを露骨にイエスに突きつけたのです。ヨハネはある時、人々がイエスに尋ねた言葉をこう記録しています。
30彼らはイエスに言った、「わたしたちが見てあなたを信じるために、どんなしるしを行って下さいますか。どんなことをして下さいますか。31わたしたちの先祖は荒野でマナを食べました。それは『天よりのパンを彼らに与えて食べさせた』と書いてあるとおりです」（ヨハネ６章３０節ー３１節）。
そうです、「しるしを見せてください。私達があっと驚くことをしてみてください。そうすれば、私達は信じますから。実際に私達の先祖は神が与えられた空から降るマナを食べて養われたではありませんか。そんな奇跡を私達にも見せてください」というのです。このことに対してイエス様は自分がなぜここにあなたたちと共にいるのか、私は何を成す者なのかということを明確にこう語りました。
35イエスは彼らに言われた、「わたしが命のパンである。わたしに来る者は決して飢えることがなく、わたしを信じる者は決してかわくことがない。36しかし、あなたがたに言ったが、あなたがたはわたしを見たのに信じようとはしない。37父がわたしに与えて下さる者は皆、わたしに来るであろう。そして、わたしに来る者を決して拒みはしない。38わたしが天から下ってきたのは、自分の心のままを行うためではなく、わたしをつかわされたかたのみこころを行うためである。39わたしをつかわされたかたのみ心は、わたしに与えて下さった者を、わたしがひとりも失わずに、終りの日によみがえらせることである。40わたしの父のみこころは、子を見て信じる者が、ことごとく永遠の命を得ることなのである。そして、わたしはその人々を終りの日によみがえらせるであろう」（ヨハネ６章３０節－４０節）。
私がこの地に来たのは私を信じる者が渇くことないためであり（このイエス様のミッション・ステイトメントがありますから、先週、お話しましたサマリアの女の渇きを大切なこととしてイエス様は彼女と向かい合ったに違いありません）、これらのことは全て神のみ心であり、私は自分の思いや願いを行うために来たのではなくて、まさしくその神の御心を行うためにきたのである。そして、その神のみ心は私を信じる者が一人も失われることなく、永遠の命を得ることなのだというのです。さて、それでは永遠の命を私達はどうしたら得ることができるのでしょうか。
このような露骨なことを聞いてくる者達は他にもおりまして、例えばルカ１１章１６節にも『イエスを試そうとして、天からのしるしを求める者がいた』と書かれており、それに対して続くルカの記事はこのようなイエス様ご自身の言葉がどのようにしたら永遠の命を得ることができるかを語っています。
『29群衆の数がますます増えてきたので、イエスは話し始められた。「今の時代の者たちはよこしまだ。しるしを欲しがるが、ヨナのしるしのほかには、しるしは与えられない。30つまり、ヨナがニネベの人々に対してしるしとなったように、人の子も今の時代の者たちに対してしるしとなる。31南の国の女王は、裁きの時、今の時代の者たちと一緒に立ち上がり、彼らを罪に定めるであろう。この女王はソロモンの知恵を聞くために、地の果てから来たからである。ここに、ソロモンにまさるものがある。32また、ニネベの人々は裁きの時、今の時代の者たちと一緒に立ち上がり、彼らを罪に定めるであろう。ニネベの人々は、ヨナの説教を聞いて悔い改めたからである。ここに、ヨナにまさるものがある」（ルカ１１章１６節、２９節－３２節）
ここでイエス様は言いました。。「今の時代の者たちはよこしまだ。しるしを欲しがるが、ヨナのしるしのほかには、しるしは与えられない。30つまり、ヨナがニネベの人々に対してしるしとなったように、人の子も今の時代の者たちに対してしるしとなる』（２９，３０）と！。それではヨナのしるしとは何ですか。そう旧約聖書に書かれていますように、ヨナはアッシリアの巨大都市ニネべに行き、彼らに神に立ち返るようにと語りかけた預言者です。そして、そのことについて『ニネベの人々は、ヨナの説教を聞いて悔い改めたからである』（ルカ１１章３２節）とルカが記しているように、そうです、彼らは悔い改め、神に立ち返ったのです。これがヨナの時のしるしであり、今、私達にもこのヨナのしるし、すなわち奇跡が与えられているのです。
先のこととつなげてお話しますのなら、「私達が見て信じるためにどんなしるしを見せてくれますか」と問われたイエス様は私がきたのは神のみ心を行うためであり、それは私を信じる者が一人も滅びないで永遠の命を得ることであると言い、再びイエス様にしるしを求める者に対して言われたことは、しるしを欲しがるあなたたちに今、与えられるしるしはヨナのしるし、すなわちニネべの人達が悔い改めたというしるし以外にはないということです。
さぁ、皆さん、この辺りから神は今も私達にしるしを見せておられるということに私達は気がつきます。皆さん、そんな今、私達に与えられているしるし、奇跡が見たいですか。それではその奇跡をこれからお見せしましょう。しるしはどこにあるのか。しるしは今、ここにあります。言うなれば、私達はいつもこのしるしを見て、このしるしと共に生きています。そうです、最後に「奇跡はここにある」ということについてお話します。
奇跡はここにある
先ほどお話しました。イエス様にとって、人の寿命を延ばすというようなことは小さなことであると。すなわち人の肉体が癒されるとか、さらには死んだ人間がよみがえるということはイエス様にとっては「小さなこと」です。しかし、それでは私達が自分の意思によって神の前に悔い改めということはどうですか。覚えていらっしゃいますか、イエス様がかつて言われた言葉を！『富んでいる者が神の国にはいるよりは、らくだが針の穴を通る方が、もっとやさしい』（ルカ１８章２５節）。なぜ富んでいる者が神の国に入るのは難しいのですか？なぜ、それは神にとって「小さいことの」の一つではなく、難しいことなのですか。
なぜなら人の心に神様は自由意思を与えており、その自由意思が与えられている者に多くの財産がある場合、それに私達、人間の性（さが）は頼りきるので、神を信じることは難しいからです。すなわち人の寿命を延ばすのは神が直接介入できることですので、それは「そんな小さなこと」なのですが、人の魂の救いということになりますと、それは私達の自由な采配に委ねられているものでもあるので、それはまことに難しいということです。
ということは、どういうことですか。人の寿命を伸ばすことは小さなことであり、それはある意味、神様の前に奇跡とすら言いえないものですが、もし、私達の頑なな心が神の前に砕かれ、悔い改めに導かれ、そこでキリストの十字架により私達が救われたとしますのなら、それこそが神の前には、また私達にとりましてもそれは奇跡中の奇跡だということです。
『3そこでイエスは彼らに、この譬をお話しになった、4「あなたがたのうちに、百匹の羊を持っている者がいたとする。その一匹がいなくなったら、九十九匹を野原に残しておいて、いなくなった一匹を見つけるまでは捜し歩かないであろうか。5そして見つけたら、喜んでそれを自分の肩に乗せ、6家に帰ってきて友人や隣り人を呼び集め、『わたしと一緒に喜んでください。いなくなった羊を見つけましたから』と言うであろう。7よく聞きなさい。それと同じように、罪人がひとりでも悔い改めるなら、悔改めを必要としない九十九人の正しい人のためにもまさる大きいよろこびが、天にあるであろう。8また、ある女が銀貨十枚を持っていて、もしその一枚をなくしたとすれば、彼女はあかりをつけて家中を掃き、それを見つけるまでは注意深く捜さないであろうか。9そして、見つけたなら、女友だちや近所の女たちを呼び集めて、『わたしと一緒に喜んでください。なくした銀貨が見つかりましたから』と言うであろう。10よく聞きなさい。それと同じように、罪人がひとりでも悔い改めるなら、神の御使たちの前でよろこびがあるであろう」』（ルカ１５章３節－１０節）
ここには「み使いは一人の人間の魂が救われた時に歓声をあげる」と書かれていますが、この役人の息子が癒された時には歓声をあげませんでした。ラザロが死んだ時にも歓声をあげませんでした。なぜですか、神を知るみ使いにとりまして、それは当たり前のことだからです。しかし、もし一人の人が悔い改めるのなら、神のみ使いは大きい喜びが起こるというのです。すなわち、私達にとりましては病人が癒されるということは奇跡でありますが、神の前にはそれは奇跡ではなく、あえて奇跡というものがあるとするのなら、神ですらそこには触れない私達の自由意思において、自ら神の前に悔い改め神に立ち返る一人の人間こそが奇跡中の奇跡なのです。
八月に三人の方達が洗礼を受けました。その準備を教会でしました。私達は神について、人について、救いについて、イエス・キリストについて話し合いました。そして、それまで各々の考えと価値観によって人生を歩んできた方達が、罪を悔い改め、イエスを主と受け入れたのです。私達はそのことを喜び、その方は家路に帰っていきます。その方達が帰った後、教会の外に出るといつもと同じように、教会の前のフリーウエイをはしる車の音がし、空を見上げると空港に着陸しようとする飛行機が見えます。ここサンディエゴ・ダウンタウンはいつもと何も変わっていません。しかし、その時に奇跡が起きていたのです。そうです、天を揺るがすような大歓声が天にはあったのです。
プレイズ・ゴッド！主にある兄弟姉妹、私達はこの視点をもってこれからも生きていくのです。目に見えるしるしで一喜一憂していた私達は、それよりも大切なものを知っているのです。神はもはやこの世界に奇跡などはなさらない。そうでしょうか、皆さんの周りをご覧ください。ここにはその奇跡によって新しい人生を歩き始めた方、そして、さらにはその奇跡の人生をこれまで何十年も歩き続けてこられた方達がたくさんいます。まさしく、主イエス・キリストにある奇跡がこの教会に満ちているのです。奇跡はどこにありますか。今、ここにあります。お祈りしましょう。
The Miracles Are Here

Once more he visited Cana in Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum. When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged him to come and heal his son, who was close to death. “Unless you people see signs and wonders,” Jesus told him, “you will never believe.” The royal official said, “Sir, come down before my child dies.” “Go,” Jesus replied, “your son will live.” The man took Jesus at his word and departed. 51 While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living. When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, “Yesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him.” Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, “Your son will live.” So he and his whole household believed.This was the second sign Jesus performed after coming from Judea to Galilee.(John 4:46-54)
Do you remember the land of Cana. Yes, it is the city where Jesus performed his first miracle as written in the second book of John. He had been invited to a wedding, and when the wine ran out, Jesus turned water into wine. We talked about this in a message in July, how Jesus changes our bland tasteless life into a flavorful life full of meaning just as he had changed the plain, tasteless water into flavorful wine.
In that same place, another happening occurred. John states that this was the second sign. His name is not written in scripture but a royal official’s son was dyeing. In the same city where a wedding banquet took place, someone else was in the condition between life and death. The reality of our life can be portrayed by these two events. One is happiness, and the other is grief. Jesus had affiliation with both. “From the cradle to the grave” as they say, Jesus is involved with every part of our lives, from birth to death. And the church that sets Christ as Lord, is also involved in the lives of many: from a new born baby’s dedication, marriage ceremony to a funeral. Now then, lets go on and take a look at Jesus in these events. First, these issues are Unresolvable by money.
Unresolvable by money
From what little information is written about these events that occurred in Cana, there are a few things we can say. The father of the dying child was a royal official. If we think about the political and social state of that time and place, not everyone could become a royal official, so we can say that he was of a privileged class. We can safely assume that he had some status and security in his living, at least better then that of a regular citizen.
Yet, he was unable to do anything about his own child’s life. He would have done everything he could in his power. Yet he was still powerless.
The state of this father and the state that we are currently in is almost entirely the same. Well, of course they did not have aspirin or MRIs at the time, and comparing then and now would be like comparing the heavens and earth. But no matter how leading-edge our medical techniques are, no matter how much money is spent on the treatment, there is no guarantee that a life can be saved. Even Michael Jackson and the founder of the apple company, Steve Jobs must have had an inexhaustible amount of money to spend, but both died young.
And he told them this parable: “The ground of a certain rich man yielded an abundant harvest. He thought to himself, ‘What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.’“Then he said, ‘This is what I’ll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store my surplus grain. And I’ll say to myself, “You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”’ “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’
(Luke 12:16-20)
I don’t think theres a single one of you here that doesn’t understand what Jesus is saying here. There is no mistake or false statement, but here is the truth. But we do not take to heart this truth and go on living our lives each day. There is a poem called “An Interview of Jesus”. This poem asks Jesus, “What are you most surprised about us humans?” and Jesus answers, “The way you live as if there is no death, and die as if there was no life.”
Yes, there are times we live as if we will never die. Especially when our health is maintained. But just as it did to these wealthy men, the day may suddenly come. Everything is prepared and ready. Theres plenty of savings, so theres no need to work. That in itself is a blessing and would be truly pleasant. It is the outcome of the heard work until then and that should be enjoyed. But if we were to prepare for “something” before we go on to enjoy the blessings, it would be even more enjoyable. And what is that something? It is the preparation of our lives that could be taken away during the night without a warning. What ever we have stored up in our barns are meaningless because we cannot take anything with us when we die.
Jesus said after telling this parable, Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest? (Luke 12;25-26)
We sometimes talk about this “very little thing”. The other day, there was a snail by the front door of my house. My wife and children were making a big deal about it as if they had seen a monster. To me, a snail was “just a small thing” because I had often played with them when I was young, so my reaction was “What are you all so afraid of?”. And on the other hand, I am not very accustomed and terrible at ironing shirts, but to my wife who skillfully and swiftly irons, it is a “very little thing.”
In the same way, Jesus talks about this “very little thing.” It is not a “little thing” like being able to walk from Jerusalem to Jericho. Nor is it like being able to catch fish in the Sea of Galilee. The very small thing that Jesus is talking about here is to be able to prolong our life. A very small thing to Jesus is a very big issue to us, and we humans are powerless over it no matter how much money we have. The second thing is that “Healing is not everything”.
Healing is Not Everything
In reading the bible, we are able to see that Jesus Christ heals everyone he comes across that wishes and asks to be physically healed. Jesus is a very compassionate man, so when he sees those who are physically suffering, he wants to make their wish of healing come true. The son of this royal official was also healed by Jesus in this way.
And the impact of effects healing has is very large, causing many to crowd to Jesus to see these miracles. Well, of course. It’s because it’s a miracle. If today, I was given the gift of being able to heal any type of illness from God, I would be on CNN by the end of this month, being interviewed by Anderson Cooper. In two weeks, you would not be able to find a place to park anywhere near our church, and our pews would be full. Miracles, especially being able to heal bodies, is that much of a fascination to us.
Why then, doesn’t Jesus just give every pastor this power of healing? To God, this is a “very small thing”, so how wonderful it would it be for us to receive such power? Then ever church in the world would be successful. Many splendid church buildings would spring up everywhere, and the churches would be running 24/7 with employed staff, and hospitals all over the would be asking pastors to come and be their chaplain.
In the beginning, the these pastors would speak saying “I am only able to heal these people because of God.” But what would happen over time? The people we place our hands over and pray for are all healed before our eyes. What would people think if there was such a pastor? Each time a miracle happens, there will be those who say “Pastor, although you say it is not your own power, you are the one who are making these miracles happen.” In the beginning, there may have been people who come for the services, but after a while, people would only come for the healing that happens after the services. And after a while, a pastor is just but a human and also makes mistakes and wrong choices,the services would be cut back to increase the time for healing. There will also be those who will start to claim that they are messengers of God, sent from heaven.
What would this cause? Would healing of the body lead people to turn away from their sins and repent? No, the people’s fascination towards the miracles would cause them to turn their attention from the important bible messages to just the miracles. The teachings of Jesus Christ will slowly but surely begin to disappear from churches one by one. This was something that Jesus already clearly knew, and this can be perceived in many from many parts of scripture.
Jesus did heal the illnesses of many. And wherever someone was healed, the news of Jesus spread quickly throughout the city and eventually throughout the whole nation. One after another, the from the sick to the possessed, came to Jesus. If Jesus had decided to continue on and fulfilled the wishes of the crowd, the news of Jesus would have sooner or later reached even Cesar in Rome and be warmly welcomed to the Roman Empire. He could have gone from his cramped, crowded life of having no place to put his head down to sleep, to taking residence in the wealthiest and most plentiful place of that time. He would not have been whipped or hung on the cross.
But Jesus’ heart was clear, that was not the reason he came here for! Our salvation is not to be healed physically. Jesus who was clearly aware of this said to the royal official, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will never believe.” Jesus knows the hearts of men. And just as he had said, the people surrounding Jesus openly showed those thoughts. John records this in a n event where some men asks Jesus, “What sign then will you give that we may see it and believe you? What will you do? Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’” (John 6:30-31) Yes, “show us a sign, something that will amaze us. Then we will believe you. Our ancestors were given manna from haven by God. Show us something as miraculous as that.” is what they meant. Jesus answers them by clearly saying what His purpose is and why He is here.
Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
“Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.” (John 6:32-40)
The reason why I am here is so that no one who believes in me will ever thirst (Here is Jesus’ mission statement so we can see that Jesus saw and faced the situation with the Samaritan woman we talked about last week, very seriously) and all these things are done as part of God’s will. I am not here to fulfill my own wishes or feelings, but specifically for the purpose of fulfilling God’s will. That will of God is for no believer is be lost, and that they may obtain eternal life. Now then, how can we obtain this eternal life?
There were others who asked such blunt questions, for example in Luke 11:16, “Others tested him by asking for a sign from heaven.”, and the continuing verses go on to explain how eternal life can be obtained. “As the crowds increased, Jesus said, “This is a wicked generation. It asks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah. For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation. The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the people of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom; and now something greater than Solomon is here. The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and now something greater than Jonah is here.” (Luke 11:16, 29-32)
Here Jesus says, “This is a wicked generation. It asks for a sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah. For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation.” (29,30)
So then, what is the sign of Jonah? As it is written in the Old Testament, Jonah was the prophet who went to the city of Nineveh in Assyria to tell the people to turn away from their sinful ways and repent. Just as Luke writes, “…for they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and now something greater than Jonah is here.” the Ninevites repented. This was the sign of Jonah, and we agree given the same sign or miracles as that of Jonah.
If we were to connect it to what we were talking about earlier, Jesus who was asked “what sign will you show us to make us believe?” told them that He came to do God’s will, which is to give all who believe in him eternal life so that they may not perish. He went on to tell those still asking for a sign that the sign given to them was that of Jonah when the Ninevites repented.
Now from here we start to see that God is also showing us a sign. Now everyone, would you like to see the sign, a miracle? Then I will show you that miracle now. Where is that sign? It is here right now. We are constantly seeing this sign and living with it. The last thing I will be talking about is that the sign is here.
The Sign is Here
We spoke earlier how making our lives longer is such a small thing to Jesus. That healing the body and raising people up from death is a very little thing. But then, how about us repenting and coming before God on our own? Do you remember what Jesus had once said “Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.” (Luke 18:25) why is it that it is so hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God? Why is it not a “little thing” but a difficult thing?
The reason is because God has given humans free will, and when those who have free will possess a lot of money, they tend to rely on it, making it very difficult for them to believe. To make someone live longer is something God himself can do, so it is a small thing to Him but to lead someone to repent and salvation is all up to our own decisions, which makes it difficult.
What does this mean? Prolonging someone’s life is a small deal and cannot even be called a miracle in God’s eyes. But if our hardened hearts are broken and we repent to be saved by the power of the cross, it is a miracle in the eyes of God, and also a miracle for us.
“Then Jesus told them this parable: “Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders 6and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.
“Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? 9And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.” (Luke 15:3-10)
Here it is written that “ there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents”, but they did not rejoice when the royal official’s son was healed. They did not shout with joy when Lazarus was brought back to life either. Why? Because to the angels who know God very well, it is normal. But when a sinner repents, the angels rejoice. To us, healing of the body is a miracle but it is not to God. The act of repentance and salvation of a someone with a freedom of choice is a miracle.
In August, three people were baptized. We prepared for the baptism here at church. We talked about God, about people, about salvation, about Jesus. And those who had lived their lives with their own values and beliefs repent their sins, and accepted Jesus as Lord and savior. We rejoice about it and they go back home. When they left the church to go home, nothing outside of the church is different. We can hear the sound of cars driving b on the freeway, and we can see planes flying over us preparing to land at the airport. But that is when the miracles happened. the hosts of heaven burst out in shouts of joy.
Praise God! Brothers and sisters in Christ, we will continue to live our lives with this view point from now on. We who have been swayed by the things we see now know something more important. Some may thing that God does not work miracles on here on earth anymore, but look around. Here are the people who have begun their new lives because of a miracle. And there are people who have lived many many years based on this miracle. This church is full of the miracles of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Where are the miracles? They are right here. Lets pray.
