釣りが好きで、好きでたまらない人は、人間でありながら、水の中にいる魚の気持ちを考えます。魚達はどんなところを棲み処にしているのだろうか。そこには水草が生えているのか、岩がごろごろしているのか。彼らの前にどんな餌がきたら、彼らはその餌を口にするのか。
サンディエゴ湾の桟橋でする釣りと、マンモスレイクでする釣りとでは明らかにその方法が違います。イエス・キリストはガリラヤの人達に語りかける言葉と、エルサレムで語りかける言葉を区別されました。四福音書の著者たちはある人達を想定して、彼らの心にその言葉が届くように、それぞれの書を書き記したのです。
私達は神について、キリストについて一生懸命に学びます。しかし、いざそのことを世界に伝える時に、その土地とそこに住む人達の心についてどれだけ思いを寄せ、彼らを知ろうと努めているでしょうか・・・。

後世にバトンを引き継ぐ者として

私達は２０２０年２月にサンディエゴ日本人教会の９０周年の記念礼拝と祝会をもちました。その時は全く想像もしていなかったのですが、その一月後、コロナパンデミックゆえに私達の教会は閉鎖されました。
また時、同じくして、既に昨年となりましたが２０２１年、私達の教会が属する北米ホーリネス教団は１００周年を迎えました。もしパンデミックがなければ、私達はロサンゼルス教会において、教団総会と祝会を盛大に持つはずでしたが、それは叶いませんでした。
しかし、その代わりにズームによる教団総会が去る１０月にもたれました。教団委員会では、これまでの教団の１００年の歩みと、これから将来に向けて、我々はどんな歩みをするべきかということが話し合われ、それに即したメッセージを総会にて語ることが決まりました。
このメッセージは二つに分かれ、まずその前半は「これまでの１００年の歩み」に対して、姉妹教会であるクロスウエイ教会の横溝ブライス兄がメッセージを取り次ぎ、その後半となる「これからの将来」については、私がメッセージを取り次がせていただきました。
今日、お話ししますメッセージの幾つかは、その教団の１００周年に向けて備えられたものであり、これからお話しする二つの御言葉は、ここにも掲げられていますように、私達の９０周年のテーマの御言葉でもありましたそれゆえ、このことはそのまま私達、サンディエゴ日本人教会に向けてのメッセージでもあります。
そこで２０２２年、最初のこの合同礼拝では「後世にバトンを引き継ぐ者として」というタイトルでお話しさせていただきます。
かつてアメリカでは日系人が強制収容所に入れられ、ある日曜日の朝から教会のドアに鍵がかけられ、以降数年間、教会が閉ざされたということがありました。
状況は異なりますが、そのようなことが、まさか私達の身に降りかかることになろうとは誰が想像したでしょうか。そのような中、私達は教会の９０周年を、そして教団の １００周年を迎えたのです。
私はこの状況をあのイスラエルの民が出エジプト後に荒野を旅した日々と重ね合わせます。なぜなら、彼らは明日、どうなるのか分からない日々を生きていたからです。
コロナパンデミックが今年、どうなるか確実に言い当てることができる人はこの世界には誰もいません。このコロナを経て、私達の教会がこれからどうなるのか、私達には分かりません。
しかし、私達には変わることのない聖書の言葉があります。箴言２２章２８節には『あなたがたの先祖が立てた古い地境を移してはならない』という言葉が記されています。これはイスラエルの三代目の王、ソロモンが書き記した言葉です。
ここに記されている「地境」ということを英語の聖書は「Ancient Boundary Stone」と言っています。この石は私達の立つべき場所を確かなるものとする石で、時代が変われど何かにとって代わることがないものを意味します。そう、私達が決して譲ってはならぬものです。
私達が集っている、このサンデイェゴ日本人教会の９２年の歴史。その間にこの教会で信仰生活を送られた人の数は延べ数千人にも及ぶのではないかと思われます。私達の信仰の先輩方は多くの喜び、そして労苦と共に、この教会の土台を作り、今日にいたっています。
その間には戦争もあり、またそれにともなう日系人に対する強制収容という困難も通りましたが、そのような中、彼らは主イエスに対する信仰を守り、それゆえに今の私達の教会があります。そして、その信仰は何を根拠になされてきたかといいますと、それは「聖書の言葉」です。
彼らは御言葉に従い、信仰生活を送り、この教会を建て上げてきたのです。まさしく、その「御言葉信仰」こそが先達者が私達に遺してくれた「バウンデリーストーン」です。
私達が生きているこの世界は今日、自由の名のもとに相対化され、あらゆることが「あなたがいいと思うのなら、どうぞご自由に」という世界となっています。この風潮は驚くべきことに、教会の中にも浸透してきています。
そうです、私達は聖書の言葉ではなくて、神の御心ではなく、私達にとって便利なこと、気楽なこと、自分に都合のいいこと、効率的なことに心が惹かれていくのです。
そこでは「世俗の言葉」が「聖書の言葉」という地境に置き換えられようとしているのです。しかし、私達はこの聖書の言葉という地境を移してはならず、しっかりと後世にこの先達者から受けたものを残していかなくてはなりません。
このことをまず、第一に心に刻みましょう。そして、これらのことをしっかりと心に留めつつ、しかし、同時にイザヤ書に記されている私達が無視できないもう一つのことをみてまいりましょう。イザヤ５４章２節を読みましょう。
『あなたの天幕の場所を広くし、あなたの住まいの幕を張り広げ、惜しむことなくあなたの綱を長くし、あなたの杭を強固にせよ』イザヤ５４章２節
明日が分からない今を生きる私達ですが、私達が未来に向けて、成すべきことが、ここには明確に示されています。
今日はこの御言葉から、私達がこれから何に向けてフォーカスすべきか三つのことをお話したいと願っております。まず最初に「情熱」ということについてお話します。
このイザヤの言葉には「天幕」という言葉があります。英語ではテントと書かれています。これは聖書の時代の移動住居のことでした。この天幕を作るためには、それなりの技術が必要でした。
私達はパウロがこの天幕を作ることを生業としていたということを知っています。これら天幕について、当時の光景を想像します。すなわち「天幕」作りにとても詳しい人がいて、その材料や構造を知りつくしている人達がいたということです。彼らは「天幕の作り方」をよく知っています。
しかし、彼らがたとえ天幕の作り方を熟知していても、それだけでは天幕が広がっていくことはありません。実際にそこから立ち上がって、穴を掘り、杭を埋め、天幕を張らなければ、いつまでたっても天幕が拡がることはないでしょう。
彼らが腰を上げ、立ち上がり、材料を集め、切り、削り、掘り、建て、張る、それらをする原動力を私達は何と呼びましょうか。今日、私はその原動力を「パッション；情熱」と呼びたいと思います。
かつて巨人ゴリアテがイスラエルの前に立ちはだかりました。彼はイスラエルの神を冒涜したのです。この男を前にイスラエルの男達はしりごみしました。しかし、ダビデの心は燃え、ゴリアテの前に立ちはだかり、彼を打ち負かしました。相手がプロの兵士で、巨人であろうが、神がダビデと共にいることを彼は知り、神に信頼していたからです。
カナンの偵察にあたり、ヨシュアとカレブを除く １０人のスパイはしりごみしました。なぜなら、そこにも背の高い巨人がいたからです。しかし、カレブとヨシュアの心は燃え、カナンの征服に動き出します。彼らに約束の地を与えると言われた神の言葉に信頼していたからです。その約束の言葉に彼らの心は燃えていたからです。
神はダビデを用い、カレブとヨシュアを用いました。彼らとそれ以外の人達の違いは何でしょうか。彼らの心に熱い思いがあったのか、なかったのかです。
預言者イザヤは主イエス・キリストの誕生を預言し、その源にあるものについて書き記しています。『6 ひとりのみどりごが我々のために生れた、ひとりの男の子が我々に与えられた。まつりごとはその肩にあり、その名は「霊妙なる議士、大能の神、とこしえの父、平和の君」ととなえられる。7 そのまつりごとと平和とは、増し加わって限りなく、ダビデの位に座して、その国を治め、今より後、とこしえに公平と正義とをもってこれを立て、これを保たれる。万軍の主の熱心がこれをなされるのである』（イザヤ９章６節、７節）。
主にある皆さん、神の一人子が私達の住むこの世界に生まれたこと、そして、このお方がやがて私達のために十字架にかかり、私達のために復活されたこと、その背後には神の熱心があったということ、ご存知でしたか。
最高のデザインで最高のエンジンを積んだ車もガソリンが入っていないのなら動きません。
イエス・キリストについて詳しい、聖書について詳しい。しかし、その聖書を知ってもらおう、伝えたいという神への情熱がなければ、そのメッセージに力はありませんでしょう。私達の情熱はどこからくるのか。努力して情熱を得るのでしょうか。
いいえ、私達の情熱は神の私達に対する熱情を知る時に与えられます。その情熱は神がその一人子を私達のためにお与えになるほどの情熱を持って私達を愛していてくださったという信仰からくるのです。
私達の天幕を拡げるために、まず大切なこと、不可欠なこと、それは私達の情熱です。その情熱なくして事は始まりません。
二つ目の事、「知る」ということについてお話します。
それでは情熱があるのなら、万事オーケーなのでしょうか。ペテロには情熱的な心があったことを私達は知っています。しかし、その情熱はいつも空回りをしていました。なぜ？なぜなら、彼は周りをよく見ていなかったからです。
カレブとヨシュアには情熱がありました。そして、よくカナンを偵察しました。彼らは相手を知り、戦略を練ったのです。
ダビデは近づけば、瞬く間に槍で刺し通されてしまうであろうという巨人ゴリアテとの戦いを想定して、近づかずとも相手を倒せるように石を拾ったのです。
天幕を拡げるのなら、その天幕を張る場所がどんな土地であるのかを知らなければなりません。そこには何があるのかを知るのです。その風土とそこに住む人達を知ろうと努めるのです。
聖書の時代、彼らが拡げる天幕の先には他民族が暮らし、彼らの行く手を阻んでいたことでしょう。その場所は普段は渇いた土地であるのに、雨の後、そこは度々、鉄砲水が起こるような土地だったかもしれません。
私は幼い時から釣りが大好きです。釣りが好きで、好きでたまらない人は、人間でありながら、水の中にいる魚の気持ちを考えます。魚達はどんなところを棲み処にしているのだろうか。

サンディエゴの桟橋でする釣りと、マンモスレイクでする釣りとでは明らかにその方法が違います。海水と淡水は異なります。海と湖の環境は全くことなります。さらには魚が好む餌が違い、仕掛けが違うように、イエス様はガリラヤの人達に語りかける言葉と、エルサレムで語りかける言葉を区別されたのです。四福音書の著者たちはある人達を想定して、それぞれの書を書き記したのです。
私達は神について、キリストについて一生懸命に学びます。しかし、いざそのことをこの世に伝える時に、その土地とそこに住む人達の心についてどれだけ思いを寄せ、それを知ろうと努めているでしょうか。
私達が御言葉を伝える時、私達に必要なのは情熱です。しかし、同時に私達は冷静に、私達がこれから出会う、２０２２年を生きている、私達のコミュニティーに暮らす人達がどんな人であるのかを知らなければなりません。
イエス・キリストの受肉が意味することは、イエス様が人の姿をとられ、私達の間に生きることにより、イエス様は私達のことを、身をもって知ってくださったということです。イエス様はサマリアの女の悲しみを知り、彼女に必要なことを語りかけました。ローマの百卒長の信仰を知り、彼に適切な言葉を語りかけたのです。
知ることはイコール、愛することです。相手を知らずして、ただ自分の主義主張を語る、そこに私達の未来はありません。
三つ目、最後のことをお話しましょう。それは私達の「信念」ということです。
イザヤは『あなたの天幕の場所を広くし、あなたの住まいの幕を張り広げ、惜しむことなく、あなたの綱を長くし、あなたの杭を強固にせよ』と言いました。
ここに「惜しむことなく」と書かれています。何かに「惜しむことなく」力を注ぐために必要なことは、そのことが惜しみなく力を注ぐに値するという確信です。惜しむことなく私達が天幕を広げていくために必要なことは私達の内なる確信です。
そして、その私達の確信は私達の信仰の先輩である兄弟姉妹も持ち合わせていたことです。彼らはその信念にたって、日々の伝道にあたったのです。
私達は今もコロナパンデミックの只中に身を置いています。このパンデミックは東京やロサンゼルスという限定地域で起きていることではなく、この地球に生きる私達、全ての者達がこのことにより大いに揺り動かされました。
この間に私達は平時では知りえない人間の心を多く見ました。いつコロナ後の世界と呼べる日が来るのか分かりません。しかし、分かっていることが一つある。その中に生きている人間は今も増々、多くの問題を抱え、それに打ちのめされ、人の心は渇いている。
この世界に私達は何を提供できるのでしょうか。当初、マスクと消毒液の必要が叫ばれました。日本国の首相はかつて二枚のマスクを国民に配りました。
私達、教会がすべきことは何でしょうか。そう、この時代に生きる人間の心を知り、その心に向けて主の愛の言葉、救いの言葉、励ましの言葉、戒めの言葉を語り続けることです。主が「しなさい」と言われること、「してはならない」と言われることを語り続けることです。
そのために私達に必要なことは、そのことに対する私達の信仰です。信念です。神の言葉を語ることによって世界を敵に回すことがあっても、この言葉を世界は必要としているのだという信念です。
この二年余りの間、私達はこれまで築き上げてきたものが崩れていく。自分でコントロールできないものが世界にはあることを知りました。人はいとも簡単に分断されてしまう、もろいものであることが明らかになりました。今、この時点で、この先にバラ色の未来を予測している人はおそらくほとんど、いないでしょう。
私達は今、イエス・キリストに立ち返るチャンスが与えられています。かつて人々はイエスの語ることに驚きました。なぜ？イエス様が権威ある者のように語ったからです。私達はイエス様ではありませんから、イエス様の持っておられた権威は私達にはありません。
しかし御言葉が言っていることの正しさ、そしてその言葉に対する確信と共に、その御言葉に生き、大胆に胸をはって御言葉を語り続けようではありませんか。主ははっきりと言われたではありませんか。
『天地は滅びるであろう。しかしわたしの言葉は滅びることがない』（マタイ２４章３５節）
「天地は滅びるであろう」。文句のつけようのない言葉です。私達の魂は気がついています。私達は良き方向には向かっていない。このままいくのなら、この世界の存続は相当に危ういぞと。しかし、聖書は言います。主の言葉は滅びることがないと。
もう説明するまでもありませんでしょう。人に与えられている最も価値のある生き方がどんなものであるのかということを。この私達の信念に、この世界の希望があるのです。
皆さんに一枚の写真をお見せします。この写真は私達、北米ホーリネス教団の歴史書に掲載されているものです。
この写真が撮られた時、私達の教会はまだこの地にはありませんでした。これは私達の一番最初のホーリネスの群れが、今から１００年前の１９２１年にスタートした当初のものです。
彼らには礼拝を行うための教会堂がなく、 ロサンゼルスの３６ストリート、デンカー・アベニューにあったのは小さな家だけだったと記されています。そして、その家は大勢の人が集まるには小さすぎたので、彼らは家の裏庭にテントを張り、それを「テントミーティング」と呼んでいたそうです。これが私達の属する北米ホーリネス教会の始まりです。彼らはテントをはって伝道を始めたのです。

主にある兄弟姉妹、今、もし皆さんの心に何か熱い思いが沸き上がってきたら、私達はそれを「情熱」と呼びます。そう、今、その皆さんの心から何か新しいことが始まろうとしています。
ヨハネは『そして言葉は肉体となり、私達のうちに宿った』（ヨハネ１章１４節）と書き記すことによりイエス・キリストの誕生を言い表しました。この「私達の内に宿った」という言葉はギリシア語によると、「私達の間に天幕をはった」という意味になります。なぜ、イエス様は私達の間に天幕をはったのか。私達を知るためです。知ることはイコール、愛だからです。
巷ではアップルのアイフォン１３が最近、発売され、自動車はこれから電気自動車へとシフトしていきます。AIなるものが人間の仕事の多くをこなし始めています。世界は刻一刻と変わっています。
しかし、人は変わらない。人に罪がある限り、この世は変わらず、ますますその混乱は増し、やがて聖書がいうところの終わりがやってくるでしょう。ご存知ですか、私達にはその世界に向かって決して変わらない言葉が託されていることを。あなたの心にはこのことに対する確信がありますか。
私達は今、私達の信仰の父母から受け継がれてきたバトンを手に握っています。皆さんの中には皆さんの親がこの教会に生きたという人達がいますでしょう。目を閉じれば、今は主のもとに行かれた主にある兄弟姉妹の顔があの人、この人とすぐに思い浮かぶことでしょう。私達は彼らから今、バトンが託されていることをご存知でしょうか。
言うまでもなくこのバトンは私達が大切に保管して、天国に持参するものではなく、どこかに捨ててしまっていいものではなく、このバトンは私達が次の世代に託していくものです。
そのような意味で私達は確かにこの教会の歴史の一部を今、担っており、このことに対して責任を負っています。彼らはいくつもの戦争を経験しました。不景気をも経験したことでしょう。世俗の力を前に大変な時を通ってこられたこともあったことでしょう。しかし、そのバトンは私達に受け継がれてきたのです。
そんな私達もいつの日か主に名を呼ばれることがあるでしょう。そう、その時、私達はこのバトンを次なる者達に託していくのです。その時に、どのような状況でこのバトンを託すことができるのでしょうか。
私達の使命はこれまでの先達者に対して彼らが立てた地境を移すことなく、しっかりと教会の土台を固め、同時に後世の者達に対して、その地境を大切にしながらも、その天幕を広くし、惜しむことなく綱を長くし、さらに杭を強固にしていくことなのです。あなたがキリストの体なる教会のためにできることは何ですか？

As Those Who Pass the Baton to Future Generations

In February of 2020, we, as the San Diego Japanese Christian Church, had a 90th anniversary service and celebration. We had no idea that a month later, our church would close its doors due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
Last year, in 2021, the OMS Holiness Church of North America (to which our church belongs) celebrated its 100th anniversary. If it were not for the pandemic, we would have had the General Assembly and a grand celebration at the Los Angeles Holiness Church, but that did not happen.
Instead, the General Assembly was held by Zoom this past October. The conference leaders discussed the 100 years’ history, and how to proceed toward the future. Then it was determined that the messages at the assembly should be along these lines.
The messages were divided into two parts. The message for the first part, “The Past 100 Years,” was given by Bryce Yokomizo of our sister church, Crossway Church. The message for the second part, “The Future,” was given by me.
Some of what I will be talking about in today’s message is from what I prepared for the conference’s 100th anniversary. The two Bible verses that I will be speaking from, as shown on the banner here, are the theme verses for our church’s 90th anniversary.
Therefore, it can be taken as a message directed to us as the San Diego Japanese Christian Church.
Thus, in this first joint worship service of 2022, I will speak on a message entitled, “As Those Who Pass the Baton to Future Generations.”
There was a time in the U.S. when Japanese Americans were put into internment camps; one Sunday morning, the doors of the church were locked, and the church was closed for several years.
The situation is different, but who would have thought that such a thing would happen to us? In the midst of all this, we celebrated the 90th anniversary of our church, and the 100th anniversary of our conference.
I liken this situation to the days of the Israelites in the wilderness after their exodus. It is because they were living daily without knowing what was going to happen the next day.
There is no one in this world who can say with certainty what the Coronavirus pandemic will be like this year. We do not know what will happen to our church in the future after this pandemic.
However, we have the words of the Bible that never change.
In Proverbs 22:28, we read, “Do not move an ancient boundary stone set up by your ancestors.” These words were written by Solomon, the third king of Israel.What is written here as “ancient boundary stone” is “jizakai” (land border) in the Japanese Bible.
This stone confirms where we are to stand, and it signifies something that will never be replaced by something else—no matter how much time passes. Yes, it is something that we must never give up.
Within the 92-year-history of the San Diego Japanese Christian Church, the number of people who have lived a life of faith through this church is probably in the thousands.
Our predecessors in the faith built the foundation of this church with much joy and hardship, and it continues to this day.
During that time, there were wars and the resulting internment of Japanese Americans, but they kept their faith in the Lord Jesus, and that is why our church is here today.What has been the basis of that faith? It is the Word of the Bible.
They followed the Word, lived a life of faith, and built up this church. That faith in the Word is the “boundary stone” that our predecessors left to us.
The world we live in today has been relativized in the name of freedom—a world where anything is permissible—“if you think it’s good, go ahead.” Surprisingly, this trend has permeated through the church as well.
Yes, our hearts are drawn to what is convenient, easy, self-serving, and efficient for us, and not to the words of the Bible, nor to the will of God.The “secular word” is trying to replace the ancient boundary stone of the biblical Word.
However, we must not move the Word of the Bible—the ancient boundary stone. We must firmly keep for the next generation what we have received from our predecessors.
This is the first thing that we should take to heart. While keeping these things in mind, let us also look at a passage recorded in Isaiah which we cannot ignore. Let’s read Isaiah 54:2.
“Enlarge the place of your tent, stretch your tent curtains wide, do not hold back; lengthen your cords, strengthen your stakes” (Isaiah 54:2 NIV).
We are living in a time when we do not know what tomorrow will bring, but what we are to do in the future is clearly shown here.
Today I would like to talk about three things. First of all, I would like to talk about “passion.”
In these words of Isaiah, there is the word “tent.” This was a mobile home in biblical times. In order to build this tent, a certain amount of skill was required. We know that Paul made a living building tents. We can imagine what these tents looked like back then.
In other words, there were people who were very knowledgeable about tent making, and knew all about the materials and the structure of the tent. They knew exactly how to make a tent. However, even if they knew how to make a tent, that alone would not make a tent stand.
If they don’t actually get up, dig a hole, fill in the stakes, and pitch the tent, it will never stand. What shall we call the driving force that causes people to sit up, stand up, gather materials, cut, carve, dig, build, and spread out the tent?
Today, I would like to call that driving force “passion.”
Once the giant Goliath stood before Israel. He had blasphemed the God of Israel. In the face of this man, the men of Israel shrank back. But David’s heart was on fire, and he stood up against Goliath and defeated him. It didn’t matter that his opponent was a professional soldier and a giant. David knew that God was with him, and he trusted in God.
In scouting the land of Canaan, the ten spies—except for Joshua and Caleb—were discouraged because there were also tall giants there. However, Caleb and Joshua’s hearts were on fire, and they set about to conquer Canaan. They trusted in God’s Word that He would give them the Promised Land. Their hearts were on fire because of those words of promise.
God used David, Caleb and Joshua. What was the difference between them and the rest of the people? It was a matter of whether their hearts were on fire or not.
The prophet Isaiah prophesied the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ and wrote about the source of his birth. “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish this.” (Isaiah 9:6-7 NIV)
People in the Lord, did you know that the driving force behind God’s only begotten Son being born into our world, and of Jesus eventually going to the cross for us and rising again for us was the zeal of God?
Even the best designed car with the best engine won’t run if there is no gas in it.You may know a lot about Jesus Christ, and you may know a lot about the Bible.
However, if you don’t have a passion for God, and a desire to share the Bible with others, your message will not have power. Where does our passion come from? Do we gain passion through hard work?
No, our passion is given to us when we know God’s passion for us. That passion comes from the faith that God loves us with such passion that He gave His only begotten Son for us. In order to expand our tent, the first and most important thing is our passion. Without that passion, nothing can happen.
I shall speak about the second thing: “know”.
So, if you have passion, is everything okay? We know that Peter had a passionate heart. However, that passion was always spinning out of control. Why? It is because he didn’t take a good look at his surroundings.
Caleb and Joshua had passion. And they carefully scouted Canaan. They knew who they were dealing with, and they planned their strategy.
David picked up stones so that he could defeat the giant Goliath without getting close to him, because he knew that if he got close to him, he would be speared through in the blink of an eye.
If we are going to spread out our tent, we need to know about the land. We need to know what is there. We must try to know the climate and the people who live there. In biblical times, other people would have lived beyond their tents, hindering their way. The place may have been a normally dry land, but after the rains, the land may have been subject to frequent flash floods.
I have loved fishing since I was little. People who love fishing and can’t possibly get enough of it think about the feelings of the fish in the water, even though they are human beings, and wonder what kind of places they prefer.
Are there water plants growing there, or are there rocks lying around? What kind of bait would make them bite? What kind of movement would make them jump at the bait? We must put ourselves in the place of the fish, and then let the line drop.
The methods for fishing at the pier in San Diego, and fishing at Mammoth Lakes are obviously different.Seawater and freshwater are different. The environment of an ocean and a lake are completely different.
And just as fish take to different baits and different lures, Jesus made a distinction between the words He spoke to the people in Galilee and the words He spoke in Jerusalem. The authors of the four Gospels wrote each book with a certain audience in mind.
We diligently learn about God and about Christ. However, when it comes time to share with the world, how much do we care about the land and the people who live there, and how much do we try to know about them?
When we preach the Word, we need passion.
But at the same time, we need to be calm and know the people whom we are about to encounter: those living in the year 2022 within our community.
What the incarnation of Jesus Christ means is that He took on human flesh, and lived among us so that He could know us first hand. Jesus knew the sorrow of the Samaritan woman, and spoke to her need. He knew the faith of the Roman centurion, and spoke the right words to him.
To know is to love. There is no future for us if we just talk about our own principles and beliefs without knowing the other person.
Let’s talk about the third and final thing. It’s called our “conviction”.
Isaiah said, “Enlarge the place of your tent, stretch your tent curtains wide, do not hold back; lengthen your cords, strengthen your stakes” (Isaiah 54:2 NIV).
Here it says, “do not hold back.” What is needed in order to put one’s effort into something without holding back is the conviction that it is worth it. In order for us to enlarge the tent without holding back, we need our inner conviction.
And our conviction was also shared by our elder brothers and sisters in the faith. It was with this conviction that they went about evangelizing daily.
We are still in the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic. This pandemic is not confined to Tokyo or to Los Angeles; all of us living on this planet have been greatly shaken by it. During this time, much of the human heart which we could not have known in normal times have been revealed. We don’t know when the day will come when we can call it a post corona world.
However, there is one thing we do know. Human beings living through this are now burdened by more and more problems, feeling overwhelmed, and people’s hearts are thirsty.
What do we have to offer to this world? Initially, the need for masks and disinfectants was expressed. The Prime Minister of Japan once distributed two masks to each person.
What is it that we, the church, should do? Yes, it is to know the hearts of the people living in this age, and to continue to speak the Lord’s words of love, salvation, encouragement, and commandment to those hearts. We must continue to speak what the Lord tells us to do, and what He tells us not to do.
What we need is our faith—our conviction.
It is the conviction that the world needs the Word of God—even though by speaking it, the world considers us its enemy.
Over the past two years or so, what we have built up over the years has been crumbling. We have learned that there are things in the world that we cannot control. It has become apparent that people are fragile and can easily be divided. At this point in time, few, if any, are predicting a rosy future ahead.
We are now given the chance to turn back to Jesus Christ. In the past, people were amazed at what Jesus had to say. Why? Because Jesus spoke like a man with authority.
We are not Jesus, so we do not have the authority that Jesus had.
However, let us live by the truth of what the Word says, and with conviction continue to speak God’s Word with boldness. The Lord clearly said,
“Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away” (Matthew 24:35)
“Heaven and earth will pass away.” These are unquestionable words. Our souls are aware. We are not headed in the right direction.If things continue as they are, the survival of this world will be in serious jeopardy. However, the Bible says that the Lord’s words will never pass away.
I don’t think I need to explain any further regarding the most valuable way of life that has been given to us. It is in this conviction of ours that there is hope for this world.
I would like to show you a photo. This photo is from the history book of our conference, the OMS Holiness Church of North America. When this photo was taken, our church was not yet in this area. This is a photo of our first Holiness flock when it was first started in 1921: a 100 years ago.
It is recorded that they had no church building to worship in—only a small house on 36th Street and Denker Avenue in Los Angeles.
And since the house was too small for a large crowd, they set up a tent in the backyard of the house and called it a “tent meeting.” This is the beginning of the OMS Holiness Church of North America. They set up a tent and started evangelism.
“Enlarge the place of your tent, stretch your tent curtains wide, do not hold back; lengthen your cords, strengthen your stakes” (Isaiah 54:2 NIV).
Brothers and sisters in the Lord, right now, if you feel something burning in your heart, we call that “passion.” Yes, something new is about to start from your hearts.
John wrote, “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us” (John 1:14) in expressing the birth of Jesus Christ. This phrase “dwelling among us” means, according to the Greek, “pitched a tent among us.”
Why did Jesus set up his tent among us? To know us. Because knowing is equal to love.
The world is changing by the minute, with the recent release of Apple’s iPhone 13, the shift to electric cars, and AI beginning to take over many of our jobs.
However, people do not change. As long as there is sin in people, the world will remain the same; its confusion will increase more and more, and eventually, as the Bible calls it, the end will come.
Do you know that in addressing the world, we have been entrusted with the unchanging word? Do you have conviction regarding this in your heart?
We are now holding in our hands the baton that has been passed down to us from the forefathers of our faith. Some of you may have had parents who were a part of this church. If you close your eyes, you will immediately think of the faces of your brothers and sisters in the Lord who have now gone to be with Him: that person, and this person.
Did you know that the baton has now been entrusted to us by them? Needless to say, this baton is not something we carefully store away, and take with us to heaven; it is not something we can just throw away somewhere; this baton is something that we pass on to the next generation.
In that sense, we are certainly part of the history of this church right now, and we are responsible for it.
They have been through several wars. They must have experienced economic struggles.
They must have gone through some difficult times in the face of worldly forces. But the baton has been passed on to us.
One day, the Lord will call our name as well. Yes, at that time, we will entrust this baton to the next generation. At that time, under what circumstances will we be able to entrust this baton?
Our mission is to solidify the foundation of the church without shifting the ancient boundary stone which our predecessors have established. At the same time, while respecting the ancient boundary stone, we are to widen the tent, lengthen the rope without holding back, and strengthen the stakes for future generations.
What can you do for the Church, the body of Christ?
