長男がまだ小さい頃、自分の体にあらわれた小さなホクロを指して「これは神様がつけてくれたんだね」と言ったことがあります。
この幼子の一言は、大人達が束になってかかってもかなわない深さがあります。同じホクロでもそれが大人だと「いやだわ、こんなところに！」と思うのです。
さらには「どうしたらこれ取れるかしら」と考えるのです。私達、大人は「ホクロ」を「神様」に結びつける心を失っています。「いやだわーホクロ、とっちゃおうかしら」と嘆くのと、「これは神様がつけてくれたんだね」と驚嘆するのでは後者のほうが、主の前に私達があるべき姿ではないかと思います。
大人になるということは、責任を負うことであり、厳しい世界に生きるということです。この世界で私達「大人」は自分の力で立つということが求められ、私達もそれを目指し、それを維持することに力を注ぎます。しかし、それと引き換えに「ホクロ」から「神様」を思うことができる心を失ってしまったようです・・・。

「知りません」と言える喜び

サンクスギビング、クリスマスとしばらく伝道の書から離れてきましたが、今日からまた伝道の書に戻りたいと思います。伝道の書７章１６節を拝読します。
16あなたは義に過ぎてはならない。また賢きに過ぎてはならない。あなたはどうして自分を滅ぼしてよかろうか（伝道の書７章１６節）
私は昨年、「あなたは義に過ぎてはらない」ということについてお話ししました。私達は誰しもが過ち多き罪人であり、その罪人である私達が自分の正しさに立つ時に、そこから色々な問題が起こります。そのことゆえに私達自身も、私達の正しさが向かう矛先にいる人達も滅ぼしかねないということを話しました。
今日はその言葉に並行して書かれている「賢きに過ぎてはならない」ということについてお話しします。
そもそも、この伝道の書を記したイスラエル三代目の王、ソロモンは王に就任するにあたり、神様から「何を与えようか、私に求めなさい」と言われ、その時に彼は善悪を見極める知恵を求めたのです（列王記上３章３節－１４節）。
そのことを神様は喜ばれ、彼に比類なき知恵と富が与えられたと聖書は記しており、このことは今日でも「ソロモンの知恵」、そして「ソロモンの財宝」と呼ばれています。
そして、そのソロモンが賢いということについて、「それが過ぎてはならない」と書いているのです。この「賢さ」ということについて今日は三つのことを見ていきたと思います。まず最初に「私達には知り得ないことがある」ということを見てまいりましょう。
今、お話ししました他者と比較できないような知恵を神様から授かったソロモンは伝道の書の７章でこう言っています。
23わたしは知恵をもってこのすべての事を試みて、「わたしは知者となろう」と言ったが、遠く及ばなかった。24物事の理は遠く、また、はなはだ深い。だれがこれを見いだすことができよう。
「無知の知」（Ignorance of knowledge）という言葉をお聞きになったことがあるでしょうか。この言葉はギリシアの哲学者、ソクラテスのこんな逸話に由来しています。
ある日、ソクラテスの賢さを知る彼の弟子がアポロンにある神殿に行き、「ソクラテスより賢い男がいるか」と巫女に聞いたところ、「ソクラテスより賢い男は誰もいない」という言葉を受けたといいます。
そのことを聞いたソクラテスは自分は疎くて、とても賢明ではないということを自覚していたゆえに、その言葉に驚き、悩んだあげく、世間で評判の賢者達に会い、その人々が自分よりも賢明であることを明らかにしようとしたというのです。
すると当時、賢者と呼ばれていた者達はソクラテスが語っていることをよく理解しておらず、結局、ソクラテスが彼らに説明するはめになってしまったというのです。
そして、彼らと会うことによってソクラテスが知ったことは、ある分野に秀でている人達は確かにその分野についてはよく知っているのですが、そのことをして他の事柄についても自分はよく分かっている者だと思い込んでいたというのです。
これらのことを通して、ソクラテスが得た一つの結論は「知らないことを知っていると思い込んでいる人々よりは、知らないことを知らないと自覚している自分の方が、まだ少しばかり知恵がある」ということでした。このことゆえに彼は「本当の賢者とは、自分は何も知らないことを知っている」人のことなのだと悟り、それが後に「無知の知」と呼ばれるようになったのです。
ソロモンは神様から知恵を授かりました。彼は当初、その知恵をもって、この世界の物事について知り尽くそうとしたのです。しかし、彼が悟ったことは、この世界の物事の理は遠く、それははなはだ深く、そんなことは到底、出来ないということでした。
ソクラテスは今から約２５００年前に生きた人で、ソロモンは約３０００年前の人ですから、知識・知恵ということについて、ソロモンはソクラテスよりも前に自らは無知であるということを告白していることになります。
「自分は何も知らないのだ」ということは聖書のあちこちに記されています。そのことは特にヨブ記の中で際立っています。神の前に真実に生きようとするヨブが受け入れることができないような災いに遭い、家族も財産も全て失うという話です。
そこには拭いきれない神への「なぜ？」という疑問が残るのです。それは私達もしばしば心にもつ疑問なのです。しかし、ヨブ記において神様はそのヨブの「なぜ」に対して沈黙を保ち、その最後、ヨブ記３８章になって、つむじ風の中から神様は彼に語りかけるのです。
1この時、主はつむじ風の中からヨブに答えられた、2「無知の言葉をもって、神の計りごとを暗くするこの者はだれか。3あなたは腰に帯して、男らしくせよ。わたしはあなたに尋ねる、わたしに答えよ。4わたしが地の基をすえた時、どこにいたか。もしあなたが知っているなら言え。5あなたがもし知っているなら、だれがその度量を定めたか。だれが測りなわを地の上に張ったか。6その土台は何の上に置かれたか。その隅の石はだれがすえたか。7かの時には明けの星は相共に歌い、神の子たちはみな喜び呼ばわった。（ヨブ３８章１節‐７節）
16あなたは海の源に行ったことがあるか。淵の底を歩いたことがあるか。17死の門はあなたのために開かれたか。あなたは暗黒の門を見たことがあるか。18あなたは地の広さを見きわめたか。もしこれをことごとく知っているならば言え。（ヨブ３８章１６節‐１８節）。
31あなたはプレアデスの鎖を結ぶことができるか。オリオンの綱を解くことができるか。32あなたは十二宮をその時にしたがって引き出すことができるか。北斗とその子星を導くことができるか。33あなたは天の法則を知っているか、そのおきてを地に施すことができるか。（ヨブ３８章３１節‐３３節）
26たかが舞いあがり、その翼をのべて南に向かうのは、あなたの知恵によるのか、27わしがかけのぼり、その巣を高い所につくるのは、あなたの命令によるのか。（ヨブ３９章２６節‐２７節）。
ヨブは当然、このような質問に何一つ答えられないのです。まさしく、それは完全な白紙回答です。そして、彼がその最後にかろうじて口にした言葉は「見よ、わたしはまことに卑しい者です、なんとあなたに答えましょうか。ただ手を口に当てるのみです」（ヨブ４０章４節）というものでした。
そもそもこのような壮大な天地万物を理解するか云々を前に、私達は家の前のコンクリートの隙間から芽を出した開花した一輪の雑草について知っているのか。生まれてからこの方、常に共にいる自分自身のことが分かっているのか、愛する伴侶のことが分かっているのか、自分の分身のような我が子のことが分かっているのか。
皆さん、私達は今一度、私達が持ちうる「知恵」とか「知識」ということ、また「賢さ」というものを考え直そうではありませんか。
第一コリント８章２節においてパウロも既に指摘しているとおりです。「もし人が、自分は何か知っていると思うなら、その人は、知らなければならないほどの事すら、まだ知っていない」。普通に読んでいれば読み過ごしてしまうようなことをあのモーセは申命記２９章２９節に記しています。「隠れた事はわれわれの神、主に属するものである」と。
私達が知りえないことは神に属しているのだということを、心に刻もうではありませんか。「私達に隠れたこと」とは「私達の生涯全体に関わること」であり、ヨブの「なぜ？」もこの「自分に隠されていた」ことに集約されていました。
これら隠れたことは全て、神に属するものであり、その神は私達をこよなく愛してくださっているということを私達が信頼して、受け止めていく時に、あのローマ書８章２８節の言葉を私達は自分のものとすることができるのです。
「神は神を愛する者たち、すなわち、ご計画に従って召された者たちと共にはたらいて、万事を益となるようにしてくださることを、わたしたちは知っている」（ローマ８章２８節）。
かつて長男が生まれた時、休暇でサンフランシスコに行きました。アメリカの大きな町のダウンタウンは一部例外を除いて、だいたい同じような風景と雰囲気で、私には興味深い場所には思えませんでした。「こりゃ、来るところを間違えた」とすぐにダウンタウンでレンタカーを借りて一日、ヨセミテに行きました。
以来、休みがくると私は努めて自然の中に飛び込みます。人間が作ったものも確かにいいのですが、個人的にはやはり神が造ったものにはかなわないと思われるからです。そして、その時、私の心にある思いは「神の前に圧倒されたい」ということで、それを求めて自然を求めて出ていくのです。
神の前に圧倒されることは私には喜びであり、自分の無力と無知を知り、謙虚にされてまた日常生活に戻る、このことにより自分の心は一番、リフレッシュされるということが分かりました。
人間や人間が作ったものに取り囲まれていますと常に競争心がわき、嫉妬心が生まれ、心が騒ぎますでしょ。神の造られたものに競争心をわかす者はおらず、神に嫉妬する人はいません。ただ神の偉大さの前に頭を垂れるのです。
時に我々は「知らない」ということに恐れを感じ、そのことゆえに問題が起こります。しかし、それ以上に最悪なことは「知らない、分からない」のに、知っているかのようにして突き進んでしまうことで、そこから生じる問題は大きいのです。
神の圧倒的な富と知恵を知る時に私達はこの危険から救われるのです。自分のちっぽけさを知ること、無知を知ることは私達の喜びなのです。
二つ目こと、それは私達には知りえないことがあるということを知った時に、私達が生きる姿勢です。それは「知るほど謙虚になる」ということです。
私達が今、この場で礼拝している方とは俗にいうグルと呼ばれるような教祖ではないということを皆さんは既にご存知かと思います。そうではなくて、先にも申しましたように、この地球の基をすえ、その度量を定め、計り縄を地の上に張ったお方です。
このお方はプレアデスの鎖を結び、オリオンの綱を解くことができる、十二宮、北斗とその子星を導いておられるお方です。私達は天の法則を保ち、そのおきてを地に施すことができるお方に向き合い、そのお方を礼拝しているのです。
そのお方に向き合う時に、私達は知識をもってわが身を武装しても太刀打ちできないということは既にお話しました。そうではなくて、その太刀打ちできないということを知る者たちが謙遜になる時に私達はこのお方をさらに深く知ることが出来るようになります。
新年を迎えたばかりの私達は先月、アドベントの日々を過ごしました。多くの人達にとって、このシーズンは何よりも喜びの時です。主イエス・キリストがお生まれになったからです。しかしながら、ある方達にとっては、このシーズンは何よりも懐疑的な時です。そのイエス・キリストが処女マリアから生まれたと聖書は記しているからです。
このことは多くの方達にとって躓きでしょう。かつてそのように躓いていた人達もいたことでしょう。もし、私達がこの躓きを自分の知識によって乗り越えようとするならば、すなわち自分の知識によって神様と相撲を取ろうとするならば、処女降誕というようなことを理解することは生涯できません。この処女降誕を「理解」してクリスチャンになったという人は誰一人いないのです。
イエス・キリストはこのことについて、神のみ心というものを明らかにしています（マタイ１１章２５節、２６節）
25そのときイエスは声をあげて言われた、「天地の主なる父よ。あなたをほめたたえます。これらの事を知恵のある者や賢い者に隠して、幼な子にあらわしてくださいました。26父よ、これはまことにみこころにかなった事でした。
子供達を見ていて教えられることは、彼らは実に普通に神様を信じているということです。長男がまだ小さい頃、自分の体にあらわれた小さなホクロを指して「これは神様がつけてくれたんだね」と言ったことがあります。

「いやだわーホクロ、とっちゃおうかしら」と嘆くのと、「これは神様がつけてくれたんだね」と驚嘆するのでは、主の前に後者のほうが正しいのではないかと思います。

そのことは今、読みました「天地の主なる父よ。あなたをほめたたえます。これらの事を知恵のある者や賢い者に隠して、幼な子にあらわしてくださいました」の直後にイエス様が何と言われているかを知る時に全く合点がいくのです。そこに何が書いてあるかご存知ですか？そうです、あの有名な言葉です。
「すべて重荷を負うて苦労している者は、わたしのもとにきなさい。あなたがたを休ませてあげよう」（マタイ１１章２９節）。
皆さん、イエス・キリストの目には、人間が皆、実際は全くそうではないのに、あたかも自分が知恵ある者のように、賢い者であるかのように、一生懸命に取り繕って生きている、そのことが重荷となり、苦労となっているということをお見通しであったに違いありません。
「そのように自分は知っていると虚勢に生きるのは疲れるだろう、心に平安もなかろう、実際にあなたが知っているということは、私の前には無に等しいことなのだ。さぁ、幼子のような心になって、わたしのものとにきなさい。あなたがたをやすませてあげるから」とこのお方は言われたのではないでしょうか。
私達は皆、神の子です。ですから、子としての心を持って、飾ることなく、謙虚にされその父なる神様の懐に飛び込む時に本当の魂の安らぎが与えられるのです。
「実れば実るほど頭を垂れる稲穂かな」という言葉が日本にはあります。私達は知恵を得れば得るほど、自分はまだまだ何も知らないと全能者の前に頭を垂れます。「水は常に低いところに流れる」という言葉もあります。これが天の法則です。主の恵みと祝福は心砕かれたところに注がれていきます。
新しい年、私は「分かりません」と言える人になりたい。そのことにより肩の荷を下ろし、神の偉大さに驚嘆し、謙虚に神にお仕えしたい。最後のことをお話ししましょう。それは「宝探しの誘い」ということです。
私達はここまで「知りえないことがある」ということ、また「知るほどに謙虚になる」ということを見てまいりました。それでは、そのことを踏まえて私達は知恵や知識というものと、これからどうつき合っていけばいいのかということをお話しましょう。
かつて日本の島の教会にいた時、よく海に行きました。海しか行くところがなかったのです。その島にいた二年の間、一生分の海を満喫しました。その海とのつき合いの中で私が楽しんだことの一つは、貝を拾うということでした。
貝といいましても、私達がこの辺りのビーチで拾うようなカラス貝のようなものではなく、本州では決して見つけることができないため息が出るような南国の美しい貝なのです。
今、思いますと、２０代後半の男が一人、人気のない浜で一日中、下を向いてうろうろしているというのは、本当に怪しい光景だったと思います。私は時間を忘れて、きれいな貝、珍しい貝を、探し続けました。
ビーチには海から打ち上げられた神様の作品がごろごろあるのです。一つ手に取るたびにその美しさとその世界に全く同じ形のものはない、その父なる神様のデザインに溜息がでるのです。私は大海原を前に幼子のようになって、神様が作られたものを喜々として楽しんだのです。
皆さん、私達が知恵を得るということは、学ぶということは、神様の広大な懐の中、すなわちこの地球という球体の上で、神様が隠されている宝を探すようなものです。
あぁー牧師のロマンにつきあうのは疲れるという方がいるかもしれません。しかし、このことは、しっかりと聖書に書かれていることをご存知ですか。箴言２章１節-１０節
１わが子よ、もしあなたがわたしの言葉を受け、わたしの戒めを、あなたの心におさめ、２あなたの耳を知恵に傾け、あなたの心を悟りに向け、３しかも、もし知識を呼び求め、悟りを得ようと、あなたの声をあげ、４銀を求めるように、これを求め、かくれた宝を尋ねるように、これを尋ねるならば、５あなたは、主を恐れることを悟り、神を知ることができるようになる。６これは、主が知恵を与え、知識と悟りとは、み口から出るからである。７彼は正しい人のために、確かな知恵をたくわえ、誠実に歩む者の盾となって、８公正の道を保ち、その聖徒たちの道筋を守られる。９そのとき、あなたは、ついに正義と公正、公平とすべての良い道を悟る。１０これは知恵が、あなたの心にはいり、知識があなたの魂に楽しみとなるからである。
何かそれまで知らなかったことを知るということは感動的なことです。なぜなら、父なる神様の作品やその緻密な秩序の素晴らしさをその時に知るからです。
そのことにより、私達は「父なる神よ、あなたはなんと素晴らしいのでしょう！」と神をほめたたえるのです！同じ事をパウロもコロサイ書の中にはっきりと書いているではありませんか！
3キリストのうちには、知恵と知識との宝が、いっさい隠されている。4たしがこう言うのは、あなたがたが、だれにも巧みな言葉で迷わされることのないためである（コロサイ２章３節―４節）。
わたしにとってあの島で貝を探すことに時間を忘れて没頭して楽しんだように、私達がこの世界の創造者の知恵を見いだすことは喜びです。私達がイエス・キリストの内にある隠されたいっさいの知恵と知識との宝を探し求め続けること、これに勝る喜びと楽しみはないのです。
私はご多分にもれず、若い頃は勉強が嫌いでした。子供に勉強を無理強いしてもあまり成果はないでしょう。でも子供達が神様の不思議という宝物を見つけることが勉強なのだということを知るならば、それは彼らにとって楽しみとなるのではないでしょうか。
この先には何があるのだろう、神様はどんなことをなさっているのだろう、なぜ、これを造られたのだろう、いつまでもそんな心を持ち続けることができたら何と素晴らしいでしょうか。
さて、最後に、浜で貝を探すことの最大の喜びはその日に見つけたものを全て自分の前に並べた瞬間です。私達はこのことをこの教会で互いになしていくのです。互いに見出した神様の宝物を互いに並べて、それを分かち合い、その隠されていたものを見つけた喜びと驚きを語り合うこと、それは私達に与えられている神様からの特権です。
このことについて、これからも皆さんと共に宝探しを続けていくことができますことは、なんという喜びでしょうか。「知りません」と言える喜びを互いに分かち合っていきましょう。お祈りしましょう。
The joy of saying, “I don’t know.”

We’ve been away from the book of Ecclesiastes for a while after Thanksgiving and Christmas, but I want to get back to preaching from that book. Let’s read Ecclesiastes 7:16.
Do not be excessively righteous and do not be overly wise. Why should you ruin yourself? (Ecclesiastes 7:16 NASB1995)
Last year, I spoke on the topic of “You shall not be too righteous”.We are all sinners who make mistakes, and when we rely on our own righteousness, it can cause many problems, which can ruin us as well as the people to whom our righteousness is directed.
Today I would like to talk about the phrase that is written alongside those words: “Do not be overly wise”.
When Solomon, the third king of Israel, who wrote this book of Ecclesiastes, was appointed king, God told him, “Ask me what I will give you.” Solomon in reply asked for wisdom to discern between right and wrong (1 Kings 3:3-14).
The Bible says that God was pleased with Solomon’s reply and gave him unparalleled wisdom and wealth. We hear about “Solomon’s wisdom” and “Solomon’s treasure” even to this day.This wise Solomon, nonetheless writes, “Do not be overly wise”.
Today, we would like to look at three things about wisdom.
First of all, let’s look at the fact that “there are things we will never come to know”.
In chapter 7 of Ecclesiastes, Solomon, who had been given wisdom from God that was incomparable to others, said,
23 I tested all this with wisdom, and I said, “I will be wise,” but it was far from me. 24 What has been is remote and exceedingly mysterious. Who can discover it? (Ecclesiastes 7:23-24 NASB1995)
Have you ever heard of the phrase “ignorance of knowledge”? This phrase comes from an anecdote by the Greek philosopher Socrates.
One day, his disciple, who knew how wise Socrates was, went to the temple in Apollo and asked the priestess if there was a wiser man than Socrates. He was told that there was no one wiser than Socrates.
When Socrates heard this, he was surprised and troubled by the words, because he was aware that he was not very wise, and he wanted to meet the wise men of worldly repute to make it clear that they were wiser than he was.
Then, those who were called wise men at that time did not understand what Socrates was talking about, and Socrates ended up having to explain it to them.
By meeting with them, Socrates learned that people who excelled in a certain field certainly knew a lot about that field, but they also thought that they knew a lot about other things.
Through all of this, Socrates came to the conclusion that he, who was aware of what he did not know, was still a little wiser than those who thought they knew what they did not know. This is why he realized that “the truly wise are those who know that they know nothing,” which later became known as “ignorance of knowledge.”
Solomon was given wisdom by God. At first, he tried to use that wisdom to know everything about his world. But what he realized was that he could not possibly gain understanding of everything in this world.
Socrates lived about 2,500 years ago and Solomon lived about 3,000 years ago. So, when it comes to knowledge and wisdom, Solomon confessed that he was ignorant before Socrates.
The fact that we know nothing is recorded throughout the Bible. This is especially evident in the book of Job. In the story of Job, he tries to live truthfully before God, but he suffers calamities that are very hard to accept, where he loses his family and all his possessions.
The question “Why?” remains unanswered for him. It is a question that we often have in our minds as well. But in the book of Job, God remains silent on Job’s “why,” until at the end of the book, in Job 38, God speaks to him through a whirlwind.
Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind and said,
2 “Who is this that darkens counsel
By words without knowledge?
3 “Now gird up your loins like a man,
And I will ask you, and you instruct Me!
4 “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?
Tell Me, if you have understanding,
5 Who set its measurements? Since you know.
Or who stretched the line on it?
6 “On what were its bases sunk?
Or who laid its cornerstone,
7 When the morning stars sang together
And all the sons of God shouted for joy?
(Job 38:1-7 NASB1995)
16 “Have you entered into the springs of the sea
Or walked in the recesses of the deep?
17 “Have the gates of death been revealed to you,
Or have you seen the gates of deep darkness?
18 “Have you understood the expanse of the earth?
Tell Me, if you know all this. (Job 38:16-28 NASB1995)
31 “Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades,
Or loose the cords of Orion?
32 “Can you lead forth a constellation in its season,
And guide the Bear with her satellites?
33 “Do you know the ordinances of the heavens,
Or fix their rule over the earth? (Job 38:31-33 NASB1995)
26 “Is it by your understanding that the hawk soars,
Stretching his wings toward the south?
27 “Is it at your command that the eagle mounts up
And makes his nest on high? (Job 39:26-27 NASB1995))
Job, of course, can’t answer any of these questions. His answer sheet is left completely blank.The last words he barely utters are, “4 “Behold, I am insignificant; what can I reply to You? I lay my hand on my mouth” (Job 40:4 NASB 1995)
Before we begin to understand the magnificence of the universe, can we even claim to know about the flowering weed that sprouted from a crack in the concrete in front of our house?
Do we really understand who we are, who our loving spouse is, and our children, who resemble us in so many ways?
Brothers and sisters, let us once again reconsider the “wisdom” or “knowledge” or “cleverness” that we can have.
As Paul has already pointed out in 1 Corinthians 8:2. 2 Those who think they know something do not yet know as they ought to know.
Moses wrote something in Deuteronomy 29:29 that we would normally overlook if we were reading it. He said, “The hidden things belong to the Lord our God”.Let’s remember that everything that we cannot know belongs to God.
What is “hidden from us” refers to our whole life, and Job’s “why?” was also summed up as what was “hidden from him.” When we trust and accept that all these hidden things belong to God, and that God loves us very much, we can make the words of Romans 8:28 our own.
28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28 NASB1995)
Once, when my first son was born, we went on vacation to San Francisco. With a few exceptions, the downtown areas of large American cities are usually the same. Honestly, the similar scenery and atmosphere did not seem that interesting to me. I immediately thought, “Well, I’ve come to the wrong place.” So, I rented a car from downtown and went to Yosemite for a day.
Since then, whenever I have a vacation, I try my best to dive into nature. It is true that there are many good man-made things, but I personally believe that they are not as good as those created by God.
And at that time, the thought in my mind is “I want to stand in awe before God”. Therefore I go out into nature in search of that. Being overwhelmed before God is a joy for me. I have found that my mind is most refreshed by knowing my helplessness and ignorance, being humbled, then going back to my daily life.
When you are surrounded by humans and their creations, you will always feel competitive, jealous, and upset. No one is competitive with God’s creations, and no one is jealous of God. We just bow our heads before the greatness of God.
Sometimes we are afraid of what we don’t know, and that can cause problems. But even worse than that is when we “don’t know and don’t understand,” but we go forward as if we do know. Problems that arise from this are great.
When we know the overwhelming wealth and wisdom of God, we are saved from this danger. It is actually our joy to know our own smallness and ignorance.
The second thing is the attitude we live with when we realize that there are things we cannot know. That is, the more we know, the more humble we become.
I’m sure you already know that the One we are worshipping here is not what is commonly called a “guru”, a founder of a religious sect. Rather, as I mentioned earlier, He is the One who has set the foundation of the earth, determined its measure, and stretched a measuring rope over the earth.
This is the One who can tie the chains of the Pleiades and untie the ropes of Orion, who guides the Twelve Palaces, the Big Dipper and its child stars. We face and worship the One who is able to keep the laws of heaven and apply His laws to the earth.
I have already told you that when we face Him, we cannot compete with Him even if we arm ourselves with knowledge. Instead, when those of us who know that we cannot compete with Him become humble, we will be able to know Him more deeply.
We just celebrated the New Year. Last month, we spent the days of Advent. For
many of us, this season is a time of joy above all else. For the Lord Jesus Christ has been born. For some, however, this season is the most skeptical time of all, because the Bible says that Jesus Christ was born of the virgin Mary.
This is a stumbling block for many. I’m sure it was a stumbling block for some people in the past. If we try to overcome this stumbling block with our own knowledge, that is, if we try to wrestle with God with our own knowledge, we will never be able to understand such a thing as the virgin birth.
No one has ever become a Christian by “understanding” the virgin birth. Jesus Christ reveals the will of God in this matter (Matthew 11:25, 26).
25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. 26 Yes, Father, for this way was well-pleasing in Your sight. (Matthew 11:25,26 NASB1995)
What I learn from watching children is that they believe in God in a very ordinary way. When my eldest son was still small, he once pointed to a small mole on his body and said, “God gave me this.”
This comment from a young child has a depth to it that adults cannot match. When it’s an adult, they think, “Oh no, it’s here!” And then they wonder, “How can I get it off?” We adults have lost the ability to connect a mole to God.
Between lamenting, “Oh no, I should get rid of that mole,” and marveling, “God must have put that there,” I think the latter is more true before the Lord. Becoming an adult means taking on responsibilities and living in a world that is full of by hardships.
In this world, we “adults” are expected to stand on our own. That becomes our goal and we pour our energy into maintaining that state. However, in exchange, we have lost the heart that can think of God when looking at a mole.
Armed with our own experience and knowledge, we are forced to compete with each other to win or lose, and we may be at the point of exhaustion.
This is what I just read: “25 I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants.” It makes perfect sense when you realize what Jesus says after this. Do you know what it says there? That’s right, the famous words.
29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:29 NASB1995)
Dear everyone, in the eyes of Jesus Christ, all human beings must have seen the
burden and hardship of living as if they were wise, as if they were clever, when in fact
they are not at all.
“It will be tiring to live in the pretense that you know so much. You will have no peace of mind. What you actually know is nothing before me.
Come to me with a heart like a little child. I will give you rest.” I believe this is what Jesus is saying to us. We are all children of God. Therefore, when we dive into the bosom of God the Father with the heart of a child, without adornment and with humility, we will find true peace in our souls.
There is a Japanese saying, “the more you bear fruit, the more the head is hanging.”
The more wisdom we gain, the more we bow our heads before the Almighty, thinking that we do not know anything yet.
There is also a saying, “Water always flows to the lowest place.” This is the law of heaven. The grace and blessings of the Lord will be poured out to the brokenhearted.
In this new year, I want to be a man who can say, “I don’t know, so that I can unburden my shoulders, marvel at the greatness of God, and humbly serve Him.”
Let me tell you about the last thing. It’s called an “invitation to treasure hunt”.
We have seen so far that there are things that we cannot know, and that the more we know, the more humble we become. Now, let’s talk about how we should deal with wisdom and knowledge in the future.
Twenty-six years ago, when I pastored a church on an island in Japan, I used to go to the beach. Well, the beach was the only place I could go.
During my two years on that island, I enjoyed the sea enough to last me a lifetime. One of the things I enjoyed doing at the sea was picking up shells.
I don’t mean shells like the mussel we pick up at the beaches around here, but beautiful tropical shells that make you sigh and can never be found in Honshu.
Now that I think about it, a man in his late twenties wandering around alone on a deserted beach all day would be a pretty creepy sight to see. However, I would lose track of time from looking for beautiful and rare shells.
The beach is full of God’s creations washed up from the sea. Every time I picked up a shell, I couldn’t help but sigh at its beauty and the fact that nothing in the world is exactly the same as the design of God the Father.I became like a little child in front of the great ocean, rejoicing and enjoying what God had made.
When we gain wisdom, when we learn, it is like searching for God’s hidden treasure in His vast bosom, on this sphere called earth. Some of you may say that it is tiring to keep up with this pastor’s sense of excitement. But did you know that this is well documented in the Bible? Proverbs 2:1-10It is written firmly in the Bible
2 My son, if you will receive my words
And treasure my commandments within you,
2 Make your ear attentive to wisdom,
Incline your heart to understanding;
3 For if you cry for discernment,
Lift your voice for understanding;
4 If you seek her as silver
And search for her as for hidden treasures;
5 Then you will discern the fear of the Lord
And discover the knowledge of God.
6 For the Lord gives wisdom;
From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.
7 He stores up sound wisdom for the upright;
He is a shield to those who walk in integrity,
8 Guarding the paths of justice,
And He preserves the way of His godly ones.
9 Then you will discern righteousness and justice
And equity and every good course.
10 For wisdom will enter your heart
And knowledge will be pleasant to your soul; (Proverbs 2:1-10 NASB1995)
knowing something that you didn’t know before is actually a moving experience. This is because we then know the magnificence of God the Father’s work and its meticulous order.
This makes us praise God, “Father, how wonderful you are! Praise God!” Paul clearly wrote this in the book of Colossians.
3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. 4 I say this so that no one will delude you with persuasive argument (Colossians 2:3-4 NASB1995).
For me, it is a joy to discover the wisdom of the Creator of this world, just as I enjoyed losing myself in the search for shells on that island. There is no greater joy and pleasure than to continue to search for all the hidden treasures of wisdom and knowledge that we have in Jesus Christ.
I, like many others, hated studying when I was young. Forcing our children to study would not bring them much success. But if children know that learning is about discovering the treasures of God’s wonders, then I believe it will be a pleasure for them.
How wonderful it would be if we could always have that kind of mind, wondering what lies ahead, what God is doing, and why He created these things.
Now, finally, the greatest joy of searching for shells on the beach is the moment when you lay out in front of you all that you have found that day. This is what we are to do for one another in this church. It is our privilege to lay out God’s treasures that we have found, share them with each other, and talk about the joy and wonder of finding the hidden things.
What a joy it is to be able to continue the treasure hunt with you in this regard. Let’s share the joy of saying, “I don’t know.” Let us pray.

１）神様から比類なき知恵が与えられたソロモンが「あなたは賢きに過ぎてはならない。あなたはどうして自分を滅ぼしてよかろうか」（伝道の書７章１６節）と言っています。彼はどんな思いをもっていたのでしょうか。
２）ソロモンは知恵の限界を書き記しています（伝道の書７章２３節―２４節）。ソクラテスの「無知の知」についてあなたはどう思いますか。
３）ヨブ記３８章以降において、神様はヨブに世界の万象について問いかけますが、ヨブは一つも答えることができませんでした。神の前に私達が無知であるということを知ることはなぜ大切ですか。
４）神様は私達の知性と理性で理解できるのでしょうか。人間の知性と理性で理解できる存在を「神」と呼ぶことができないのはなぜですか。
５）ヨブは神の圧倒的な偉大さを前に「見よ、わたしはまことに卑しい者です、なんとあなたに答えましょうか。ただ手を口に当てるのみです」（ヨブ４０章４節）と言いました。「隠れた事はわれわれの神、主に属するものである」（申命記２９章２９節）ということを受け止めることはなぜ私達の人生に大切ですか。
６）マタイ１１章２５節、２６節を読みましょう。私達が失ってしまった幼子の心にはどんなものがありますか。なぜ私達はその心を失ってしまったのでしょうか。神様を知り、信じるために、なぜその心が必要なのでしょうか。
７）上記の言葉の後にイエス様は「すべて重荷を負うて苦労している者は、わたしのもとにきなさい。あなたがたを休ませてあげよう」（マタイ１１章２８節）と言われました。先の言葉とこの言葉の間にはどんな関係があるのでしょうか。
８）箴言２章１節―１０節を読みましょう。私達が知らないことを発見することを、ここには何に譬えてていますか。「知らない」と言えることはなぜ私達の喜びとなり得るのでしょうか。
