もし皆さんが大切な人を残して、いよいよ天国に行かなくてはならなくなったら、最後に何を語りますか。「コスコに行きたい」とか「車のオイルチェンジをしないといけない」とは言いませんでしょう。
そうです、自分が話すことができる言葉がいよいよ残り少なくなった状況で、私達は最も大切なこと、最も伝えたいこと、愛する者達の助けや益となることを言い残したいと願いますでしょう。
神の一人子、イエス・キリストがいよいよ愛する者達の元から離れて天に帰る時に、イエス様が語ったことは「聖霊を待ち望め」ということでした。

神に喜ばれる教会（２）：全てはここから始まる

合同礼拝が先週から始まりました。先週、本多先生が話してくださったように、私達はこの合同礼拝を始めるにあたり、隔週で交互にメッセージを備えようと話し合いまし
た。そこで導かれたテーマが「神に喜ばれる教会」でした。私達の教会がこれから目指すべきことは「誰かに喜んでもらう教会」ではなく「誰かの好みに合わせる教会」でもなく、神様が私達の教会を見て、喜んでくださる教会であるべきだと私達は思うからです。
そして、そのような教会となる時に、それはイコール、私達もこの教会を喜ぶことがで
きるということは確実だという思いにいたりました。これらを踏まえて本多先生は先週、「なぜ私達は合同礼拝に戻るのか」ということ、特に「一致」について話され、イエス・キリスト自らがそのことを私達に願っているということが語られました。
ここ数年、アメリカでは「分断」という言葉をよく聞くようになりました。この国には様々な信仰や思想背景を持った人が住んでいます。これらの違いを私達は「ダイバステ
ィー」(Diversity)と呼び、このダイバスティーがこの国の活力となっています。しかし、同時にこのダイバスティーは地雷ともなりかねないものです。この問題は昔からあり、いつこの地雷が爆発してしまうか分からない危険性が常にあります。
かつてキング牧師はアメリカが一番、分断されている曜日と時間帯は日曜日の朝だと言いました。その時から５０年余りが経ち、現在、この国の教会は神様の前にどのように写っているのでしょうか。
現在、私達の属する北米ホーリネス教団で日英合同礼拝を毎週、捧げている教会はありません。私の知る限り、この国でそのような日本人教会を知りません。私達がこれから取り組もうとしていることは、そのような意味でチャレンジを伴うものであると同時に、とてもやりがいのあることです。
なぜなら、このことこそこの地上に教会が誕生した時、クリスチャンの前に置かれた最大の課題だったからです。そう、彼らが取り組まなければならない第一の課題はユダヤ人と異邦人が一つとなることでした。私達は２０００年前の教会が向き合った課題に今、向き合うことができる特権にあずかっています。
イエス・キリストが十字架にかかり、葬られ三日目によみがえり、１２弟子や他の者達にその姿を現した後に天に戻られました。そして、その後に地上に教会が生まれました。
ちなみに旧約聖書には「教会」という言葉は出てきません。なぜなら旧約の時代に「教会」はなかったからです。「教会」はイエス・キリストが天に戻られた後に、イエスの弟子達、使徒達と共にこの地に誕生したものなのです。
そして、その教会の始まりと成長について記録しているのが聖書の使徒行伝であります。「神に喜ばれる教会」ということを考える時に使徒行伝はその指針を私達に提供してくれる書です。そこで今日はこの使徒行伝から「神に喜ばれる教会」ということについて、最初の大前提についてお話しします。
これは私達が着るシャツの第一のボタンのようなもので、このボタンをかけ間違いますと、これから毎週、お話しすることが全てずれてきます。ですから、どうか今日、お話することを皆さんの心に刻んでください。それではその使徒行伝に一番、最初に書かれていることを読んでみましょう。
1テオピロよ、わたしは先に第一巻を著わして、イエスが行い、また教えはじめてから、2お選びになった使徒たちに、聖霊によって命じたのち、天に上げられた日までのことを、ことごとくしるした。3イエスは苦難を受けたのち、自分の生きていることを数々の確かな証拠によって示し、四十日にわたってたびたび彼らに現れて、神の国のことを語られた。4そして食事を共にしているとき、彼らにお命じになった、「エルサレムから離れないで、かねてわたしから聞いていた父の約束を待っているがよい。5すなわち、ヨハネは水でバプテスマを授けたが、あなたがたは間もなく聖霊によって、バプテスマを授けられるであろう」。6さて、弟子たちが一緒に集まったとき、イエスに問うて言った、「主よ、イスラエルのために国を復興なさるのは、この時なのですか」。7彼らに言われた、「時期や場合は、父がご自分の権威によって定めておられるのであって、あなたがたの知る限りではない。8ただ、聖霊があなたがたにくだる時、あなたがたは力を受けて、エルサレム、ユダヤとサマリヤの全土、さらに地のはてまで、わたしの証人となるであろう」。9こう言い終ると、イエスは彼らの見ている前で天に上げられ、雲に迎えられて、その姿が見えなくなった。（使徒行伝１章１節―９節）。
お読みになっていてお気づきになったと思います。ここにはイエス・キリストが天に挙げられる前に弟子達に語りかけた言葉が書かれています。

神の一人子、イエス・キリストがいよいよ愛する者達の元から離れて天に帰る時に、イエス様が語ったことは「聖霊を待ち望め」ということでした。
神学的な話になりますが、私達クリスチャンは「三位一体の神」を信じています。
この三位一体の神とは「父なる神」、「子なる神キリスト」、そして「聖霊なる神」、これら三つを一つとする神なのです。
聖書の冒頭の一行の言葉、創世記一章一節は父なる神の存在をはっきりと書いています。
「はじめに神は天と地を創造された」（創世記１章１節）
そして続く２節に聖書は既に聖霊の存在が書き記されています。
『地は形なく、むなしく、やみが淵のおもてにあり、神の霊が水のおもてをおおっていた』（創世記１章２節）。
コロサイ書は「神の子なるイエス・キリスト」について、こう証言しています。
『御子は、見えない神のかたちであって、すべての造られたものに先だって生れたかたである』（コロサイ 1章１５節）。
ゆえに神がこの世界を創造し、最初の人間を創造するにあたり、こう言われたのです
『神はまた言われた「われわれのかたちに、われわれにかたどって人を造り、これに海の魚と、空の鳥と、家畜と、地のすべての獣と、地のすべての這うものとを治めさせよう」』（創世記1章２６節）。
神は人を創造するさいに「われわれ」と言いました。言うまでもなく、これは神が三位一体であったからです。「創造者なる神」も「聖霊」も「キリスト」も世の始まる前から、時間を超え、永遠に存在しているのです。
イエス・キリストはご自身が弟子達の前から姿をなくすにあたり、彼らがこれから宣教を始め、教会という信徒の集まりが誕生するにあたり、「あなたに教えたことをがんばって守りなさい。全てはあなたの努力次第だ」とか「全てはあなたの経験と力量にかかっている」とは言わずに、ただ「この聖霊を受けなさい」と言われたのです。
そう、それは「これから教会が生まれ、教会が成長していくのは聖霊のはたらきによるのだ」ということです。そして、このプランはその時にイエス様がパッと思いついたことではなくて、かねてからイエス様のお心にあったことなのです。イエス様は十字架におかかりになる前に、弟子達に既に聖霊について語っていました。
「わたしは父にお願いしよう。そうすれば、父は別に助け主を送って、いつまでもあなたがたと共におらせて下さるであろう。それは、真理の御霊である。この世はそれを見ようともせず、知ろうともしないので、それを受けることができない」（ヨハネ１４章１６節－１７節）
「わたしが父のみもとからあなたがたにつかわそうとしている助け主、すなわち、父のみもとから来る真理の御霊が下る時、それは私についてあかしをするであろう」（ヨハネ１５章２６節）
「しかし、わたしは本当のことをあなたがたに言うが、わたしが去って行くことは、あなたがたの益になるのだ。わたしが去って行かなければ、あなたがたのところに助け主はこないであろう。もしいけば、それをあなたがたにつかわそう。それが来たら、罪と義と裁きについて、世の人の目を開くであろう」（ヨハネ１６章７節－８節）
皆さん、イエス様は当初から“その時”に必要なのは聖霊だということを知っておられ、そのことを何度も語られたのです。これらの言葉の全てに「・・・あろう」と書かれているように、この後に弟子達の上にこの聖霊が注がれ、彼らはイエス様の言葉の通り、力を受けて世界に出ていき、キリストの証人となったのです。
使徒行伝の冒頭に記されているように、イエス様の弟子達は皆、復活したキリストに出会っていました。
『イエスは苦難を受けたのち、自分の生きていることを数々の確かな証拠によって示し、四十日にわたってたびたび彼らに現れて、神の国のことを語られた』（使徒１章３節）と書かれている通りです。
十字架に磔にされて絶命したと思われたお方が実際に自分達の前に姿をあらわし、数々の確かな証拠を彼らは目の当たりにしました。それが４０日続きました。このような類のない強烈な経験をした彼らには「このイエス・キリストを伝えて行く！」という情熱と確信がその心に日毎に増し加わったに違いありません。
しかし、イエス様は抑えきれない興奮で心が燃え、勇み足で世界に出ていこうとしている彼らにストップをかけて、エルサレムに留まり、かねてから言われていた聖霊を待ち望むように言われたのです。
かつてビルゲイツは言いました。「私は爆発的に成長している企業に感銘を受けることはないが、１００年続いている企業に対しては深い敬意を持つ」この世界で１００年間、続いている企業は決して多くはありません。一つの会社が１００年、経営を続けるためにはいったいどれだけの苦労と革新がそこにはあったことでしょうか。
クリスチャニティーは２０００年、続いています。そして、その土台となる聖書の内容は変わっていません。それは普遍的なものだからです。
私達の教会は今年９２周年を迎えます。この９２年間、私達は目に見え、手に取ることができる商品を売ってきたのではないのです。
私達はこの９２年間、来る日も来る日も見えないお方について語り、そのメッセージに応答した者達が起こされ、今日にいたっているのです。
普通で考えたらこのようなことはありえないのです。それではなぜ、そのありえないことが２０００年もの間も継続されているのでしょうか。２０００年もの間、人間がしっかりしていたからでしょうか。いいえ、キリスト教会はこの２０００年の間に多くの問題を起こしてきました。そして、その主犯は言うまでもなく人間です。
この場合、その問題を起こした主な人達はクリスチャンと呼ばれる者達でした。このことは人間の力によって、この２０００年もの間のクリスチャニティーが保たれているのではないという事実を明らかにしています。
それではなぜ、クリスチャニティーは今も存在しているのか。なぜ、私達は今、この礼拝を捧げているのか？
答えは一つしかありません。すなわち２０００年前に弟子達の上に注がれた聖霊がそれ以来、教会の上に注がれ続けてきたからです。
使徒行伝９章が記録している通りです。『こうして教会は、ユダヤ、ガリラヤ、サマリ
ヤ全地方にわたって平安を保ち、基礎がかたまり、主をおそれ聖霊にはげまされて歩
み、次第に信徒の数を増していった』（使徒行伝９章３１節）
教会生活をしていると、また人生そのものを生きていると私達は打ちのめされてしまうような経験をすることがあります。この度のコロナにより、このような経験をした方達もきっといることでしょう。
そんな時、私達は人に助けを求めます。しかし、お気づきですか、その人も打ちのめされているということを。自分にも彼らにも余裕がない。誰も自分を励ましてくれない、そのことゆえにさらに打ちのめされ、起き上がることができなくなります。
時に私達は「あの人に目をかけてもらっているから大丈夫」というようなことを言われると安心します。しかし、その人は私達と同じ人間なのです。聖書は言っておりますでしょう。
『あなたがたは鼻から息の出入りする人に、たよることをやめよ、このような者はなんの価値があろうか』（イザヤ２章２２節）。
主にある皆さん、最初の教会は神をおそれ、聖霊に励まされて前進したのです。聖霊は私達を励ましてくださるお方です。我々は天地創造の前からおられ、天地万物を支配している、その神なる霊と共にその人生を歩むことができるのです。皆さん、お気づきですか。我々は毎週日曜日、使徒信条を通して、誓約しているのです。
『我は天地の作り主、全能の父なる神を信ず。我はその独り子、我らの主イエス・キリストを信ず。我は聖霊を信ず』。
この三位一体の神を信じる！と宣言し、一週間を始めているのです。この一週間、何が起ろうとも、このことを宣言している私達は何と心強いことでしょうか。これは私達に与えられている、とてつもない特権です。
そもそも、私達がイエス・キリストへの信仰を決断する時、すなわち「イエスこそ私の主です」という信仰の告白をする時、そこには聖霊がはたらいているのです。パウロが書いている通りです。
『聖霊によらなければ、だれも「イエスは主である」と言うことができない』（コリント第一の手紙１２章３節）。
「イエスは主である」という信仰告白は私達が自らの力では、言いえないものであり、それを告白する時には聖霊がはたらいているのです。この度、洗礼の準備をしている姉妹方がおりますが、彼女達が信仰告白をすることができるのは、一重に彼女達に聖霊が臨まれているからなのです。そして、さらに驚くべきことに、私達はこの聖霊に満たされて生きることができると聖書は言っているのです。
『15そこで、あなたがたの歩きかたによく注意して、賢くない者のようにではなく、賢い者のように歩き、16今の時を生かして用いなさい。今は悪い時代なのである。17だから、愚かな者にならないで、主の御旨がなんであるかを悟りなさい。18酒に酔ってはいけない。それは乱行のもとである。むしろ御霊に満たされて、19詩とさんびと霊の歌とをもって語り合い、主にむかって心からさんびの歌をうたいなさい』（エペソ５章１５節―１９節）1
神がこの世界におられて、その神なる霊に満たされて生きる生き方があるとするのなら、私達が寝ても覚めても願い求めることは一つしかありませんでしょう。そうです、それは「私を聖霊で満たしてください」という願いではありませんか？
私達は肉体を持つものであり、この肉体がある限り、私達の人生には色々なことが起こります。肉体をもつゆえに喜びというものがあります。おいしいものを食べた時、感動する光景を見たり、音楽を聞いた時、愛する者の温もりを感じる時に、私達の肉体は喜びます。
しかし、この肉体を持っているということにより、私達は様々なチャレンジに向き合います。なぜなら、時に肉体はあちこちに病を負うものであり、その最後にはその肉体の命は失われる宿命が伴うからです。
また私達のこの肉体は罪の温床ともなります。聖書はこの肉体をまとっている私達の心にある思いを「肉なる思い」と言います。聖書はその肉の働きについてこう書いています。
『19肉の働きは明白である。すなわち、不品行、汚れ、好色、20偶像礼拝、まじない、敵意、争い、そねみ、怒り、党派心、分裂、分派、21ねたみ、泥酔、宴楽、および、そのたぐいである。わたしは以前も言ったように、今も前もって言っておく。このようなことを行う者は、神の国をつぐことがない』（ガラテヤ５章１９節-２１節）。
言うまでもありませんでしょう、これらのことにより私達の人生は混乱し、最悪の場合、これらのことにより私達は破滅してしまうということを。初代教会において、もし教会が失われてしまう可能性があったとしたなら、その第一の原因は人間自身であったことでしょう。そう、それは彼らの肉の働きです。彼らが聖霊に満たされて、聖霊に導かれて教会を建て上げていなかければ、それを保ち続けることは困難を極めるのです。
もし、あの時、弟子達が復活の主に出会ったという自らの強烈な経験による興奮と情熱だけで宣教をしていたらどうだったでしょう。確かに興奮と情熱は人に伝染します。しかし、それはしばしの間なのです。せめて、もっても１０年、弟子達が死んでしまえば、その興奮を知る者など地上から全くいなくなってしまったことでしょう。これが肉の力の限界なのです。ですからイエスは聖霊を待ち望めと言われたのです。
自分の力が尽きたという方がいますか。そうです、肉の力には限界があります。年齢を重ねればそのことは日毎に明白になりますでしょう。しかし、私達はそれでも己の肉に頼ります。そう、それはたとえ私達がクリスチャンであってもそうなのです。
「聖霊」と口では言いながらも、それは単なるかけ声に過ぎず、そのおはたらきに信頼せずに来る日も来る日も自分の肉の力だけに頼る。もし、私達がそのような生き方に終始しており、限界を感じていますのなら、そんな私達にはまだ一つ、希望があります。
その希望は当初、なによりも先に置くべきものだったのです。そう、それは聖霊に満たされることです。
先に読みましたガラテヤ書は「肉のはたらき」を明白にして、その後に聖霊が結ぶ実について書いています。
そう、それは人間の力によって結ばれる実なのではなくて、聖霊に満たされる時に私達が結ぶことができる実なのです。
『22しかし、御霊の実は、愛、喜び、平和、寛容、慈愛、善意、忠実、23柔和、自制であって、これらを否定する律法はない』（ガラテヤ５章２２節、２３節）。これらのものが私達の心に結ばれることを望まない人はいませんでしょう。
これらが私達の人生を良き方向に向かわせる、これらが人との関係に祝福をもたらし、壊れた人間関係を築き上げることができるということを否定する人はいないでしょう。
主にある皆さん、この御霊の実に満たされて生きる自分の姿を。この姿こそ、私達が願っている自分の姿ではないでしょうか。あなたの夫や妻、子供達はあなたの心にこの実があることを見たいと願っているのではありませんか。そして、あなたも彼らの内にこの実を見たいと願っていませんか。
それなら、私達がすべきことは自ずと決まりますでしょう。
私達人間は神の息、すなわち神の霊を受けて命あるものとされたのです。クリスチャンは聖霊によってイエスを信じてクリスチャンになったのです。私達の命も私達のクリスチャンライフも御霊によって始まっているのです。
しかし、それがいつの間にか自分以外に頼る者はない、この肉の力で全てを成し遂げていくかのごとくに私達は生きています。パウロはそんな人々について言ったのです。
「あなたがたは、そんなに物わかりが悪いのか。御霊で始めたのに、今になって肉で仕上げるというのか」（ガラテヤ３章３節）。
人がしてはならないこと、それは神様の打ち立てたプランに反することです。このことに対して、私達の側に勝ち目はありませんからご了承ください。
どうぞ、覚えてください、神は私達が聖霊に満たされて生き、その聖霊によって自らを完成させるように私達を作られたのです。なぜ私達は御霊ではじまったのに、肉なるもので自らを仕上げようとするのですか。
このメッセージを準備しており、私は深く反省しました。それは私自身、この聖霊のはたらきを忘れてしまったり、過小評価していることがあることに気がつかされたからです。「聖霊、聖霊」と言いながら、自らの肉の力に頼っている自分の姿が示されたのです。それゆえ、このことを深く悔い改め、また聖霊の働きを期待して生きる毎日を送りたいと思います。
最初の教会が生まれる前に、イエスは「聖霊を待ち望め」と言いました。そして、あのエルサレムの二階座敷でイエスの弟子達はその約束の聖霊を受けました。地上最初の教会が誕生した瞬間です。
主にあるサンディエゴ日本人教会の兄弟姉妹、教会も聖霊降臨と共に始まったのですから、我々は聖霊と共にこの教会を建て上げていかなければならないのです。
「主に喜ばれる教会」を建てあげる私達にとりまして、このことが最も大切なことであり、全てはここから始まらなければなりません。
聖霊に満たされて生きるということ、これ以上の生き方はありません。私達が聖霊に満たされる時、私達は変えられ、私達が変わるのなら、私達の家庭や職場も、そして教会も変わることでしょう。
言うまでもなく、このことを神様は喜んでくださることでしょう。主にある皆さん、聖霊に満たされるように、主に切に願い求めようではありませんか。この教会を主の御霊が導いてくださることを祈り求めようではありませんか。お祈りしましょう。
A Church Pleasing to God (2): Everything Starts Here

Joint worship services began last week. As Pastor Honda spoke last week, in starting these joint worship services, we discussed that we would alternate giving messages every other week. The theme we were led to was “A Church Pleasing to God”. This is because we believe our church should not seek to be “a church that pleases someone” nor “a church that caters to someone’s preference”, but a church that God sees and will be pleased with.
And when we become such a church, it is certain that we will be pleased with this church as well. In light of these things, last week, Pastor Honda talked about “Why we are returning to joint worship services,” and especially about “oneness” and how Jesus Christ Himself desires this for us.
These last few years, in the U.S., we have heard the word “divided” a lot. In this country, we have people of many different faiths and ideological backgrounds that live here. We call these differences “diversity”, and diversity is the lifeblood of this country. At the same time, however, this diversity can become a land mine. This problem has been around for a long time, and there is always the danger that this land mine could explode at any moment.
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said that the most segregated time in America is on Sunday mornings. How do the churches in this country appear before God today, more than 50 years after that time?
Currently, there are no churches in the Holiness Church of North America, to which our church belongs, that offer a joint service in English and Japanese on a weekly basis. As far as I know, I do not know of any Japanese church in this country that does. What we are trying to do is thus, challenging, and at the same time very rewarding.
This is because this was the greatest challenge that was placed before Christians when the Church was born on this earth. Indeed, the first task they had to tackle was to unite Jews and Gentiles as one. We are privileged to be able to face now the challenges that the Church faced 2000 years ago.
Jesus Christ was crucified, buried, and rose again on the third day, and returned to heaven after revealing Himself to the twelve disciples and others. After that, the Church was born on earth. Incidentally, the word “church” does not appear in the Old Testament. This is because there was no “church” in Old Testament times. The “Church” was born on this earth along with Jesus’ disciples and apostles, after Jesus Christ’s return to heaven.
And it is the biblical book of Acts that records the beginning and growth of the church.
When we think about “a church pleasing to God,” the book of Acts provides us with a guideline. So today I would like to talk about the first basic premise of “a church pleasing to God” from this book of Acts.
This is like the first button on the shirt we wear, and if you misplace this button, everything we are going to talk about each week will be off.Therefore, please take to heart what I am going to share with you today. Let us read what is written at the very beginning of the book of Acts.
1 In my former book, Theophilus, I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach 2 until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen. 3 After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. 4 On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5 For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” 6 Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” 9 After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. (Acts 1:1-9)
As you read this, you may have noticed that the words of Jesus Christ are written here. Here are the words that Jesus Christ spoke to His disciples before He was taken up into heaven.
If you had to leave your loved ones behind and finally go to heaven, what would be the last thing you would say to them? You wouldn’t say, “I want to go to Costco” or “I need to change the oil in my car.”
Indeed, in a situation where we are left with a few words to speak, we would desire to leave behind the most important things, the things we want to say, the things that will help and benefit our loved ones the most.
When Jesus Christ, God’s only begotten Son, was about to leave His loved ones to return to heaven, what He said was, “Wait for the Holy Spirit.”
Theologically speaking, we Christians believe in a “triune God.” This triune God is “God the Father,” “Christ the Son of God,” and “God the Holy Spirit,” all three in one.The opening line of the Bible, Genesis 1:1, clearly states the existence of God the Father.
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. (Genesis 1:1)
And in the following second verse, the Bible already describes the presence of the Holy Spirit.
Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. (Genesis 1:2)
The book of Colossians testifies concerning “Jesus Christ, the Son of God,”
The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. (Colossians 1:15)
Therefore, when God created the world and created the first human beings, He said
Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” (Genesis 1:26)
God said “our” when He created mankind. Needless to say, this is because God is triune; three in one “God the Creator,” “the Holy Spirit,” and “Christ” have existed since before the world began, transcending time and eternity.
As Jesus Christ Himself left His disciples, as they were about to begin their ministry, and as the Church that is the gathering of believers was to born,「He did not say, “Do your best to follow what I have taught you. It all depends on your effort,” or “It all depends on your experience and competence,” but He simply said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”
Yes, it is “by the work of the Holy Spirit that the church will be born and the church will grow.” And this plan was not something that Jesus came up with in a flash of that moment, but something that had been in His mind for some time. Jesus had already told His disciples about the Holy Spirit before He went to the cross.
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.” (John 14:16-17)
“When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—he will testify about me.” (John 15:26)
“But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8 When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment:” (John 16:7-8)
From the very beginning, Jesus knew that the Holy Spirit would be needed at “that time,” and He spoke of this many times. As it says “. . . will” in all these words, this Holy Spirit was poured out upon the disciples after this, just as Jesus said, and they went out into the world empowered and became witnesses of Christ.
As recorded at the beginning of the book of Acts, all of Jesus’ disciples had met the risen Christ.
As it is written, “After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God.” (Acts 1:3)
The One who was thought to have died on the cross actually appeared before them, and they saw many convincing proofs. This continued for 40 days. After such a unique and intense experience, their passion and conviction to “proclaim this Jesus Christ” must have daily grown in their hearts.
But Jesus put a stop to their unbridled excitement fueled by their burning hearts and their courageous attempts to go out into the world, and told them to stay in Jerusalem and wait expectantly for the Holy Spirit, which He had been telling them about for some time.
Bill Gates once said. “I am not impressed by companies that are growing explosively, but I have a deep respect for those that have continued on for 100 years.” There are not many companies in this world that have been in business for 100 years. How many hardships and innovations must have been involved in order for a company to stay in business for 100 years?
Christianity has continued on for 2000 years. And its foundation, the Bible, has not changed. This is because it is immutable.
Our church is celebrating its 92nd anniversary this year. We have not been selling a product that can be seen and held in our hands for these past 92 years.
For these 92 years, day after day we have been talking about the invisible One, and people have responded to that message, and thus we are here today.
This would not be possible under normal circumstances. Why, then, has this impossible thing continued on for 2000 years? Is it because human beings have been reliable for 2000 years? No, the Christian Church has caused many problems during these 2000 years. And needless to say, the main culprit has been human beings.
In this case, the main people who caused the problems were those called Christians.
This reveals the fact that human power has not preserved Christianity for these 2000 years.
Then why does Christianity still exist? Why then are we offering this worship service now?
There is only one answer. The Holy Spirit that was poured out upon the disciples 2000 years ago has continually been poured out upon the Church ever since.
It is just as is recorded in Acts 9. “Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace and was strengthened. Living in the fear of the Lord and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, it increased in numbers.” (Acts 9:31)
In church life, and in life itself, we can have experiences that beat us down. I am sure there are those who have had this experience as a result of the coronavirus.
At such times, we turn to others for help. But have you noticed that they are beaten down as well? There is no excess margin for you or for them. No one encourages you, and because of that you are even more beaten down and unable to get up.
Sometimes we are reassured when someone says something like, “I’m fine because that person is looking out for me.” However, that person is a human being just like us. Doesn’t the Bible say so.
Stop trusting in mere humans, who have but a breath in their nostrils. Why hold them in esteem? (Isaiah 2:22)
People in the Lord, the first church feared God and was encouraged by the Holy Spirit to move forward. The Holy Spirit is the One who encourages us. We can live our lives with that Divine Spirit, who existed before creation, and who rules over all things.
People, have you noticed? We make a pledge, every Sunday, through the Apostles’ Creed. “I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord. I believe in the Holy Spirit.”
We declare we believe in this triune God, and begin the week. No matter what happens during the week, how reassuring it is for us who have proclaimed this. This is a tremendous privilege we are given.
To start with, when we make a decision of faith in Jesus Christ, that is, when we confess our faith that “Jesus is my Lord,” the Holy Spirit is at work there. As Paul writes,
No one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit. (1 Corinthians 12:3)
The confession of faith that “Jesus is Lord” is something we cannot say on our own, and when we confess it the Holy Spirit is at work. We have sisters who are preparing for baptism, and they are able to make a confession of faith because of the presence of the Holy Spirit in them. And even more amazingly, the Bible says that we can live filled with this Holy Spirit.
15 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, 19 speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Ephesians 5:15-19)
If God is in this world, and if there is a way to live filled with His divine Spirit, then whether we are asleep or awake there is only one thing we should ask and seek. Indeed, shouldn’t it be a request, “Fill me with the Holy Spirit”?
We have physical bodies, and as long as we have this physical body, many things will happen in our lives. Because we have a physical body, there is such a thing as joy. Our bodies rejoice when we eat something delicious, see a moving sight, hear music, or feel the warmth of a loved one.
However, by having this physical body, we face many challenges. This is because sometimes the body gets diseased in various places, and at its end the body is doomed to lose its life.
This body of ours is also a breeding ground for sin. The Bible calls the thoughts in our hearts, which are clothed with this body, “fleshly thoughts”. The Bible says this about the work of the flesh.
19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. (Galatians 5:19-21)
It probably goes without saying that these things will disrupt our lives and, at worst, these things will ruin us. In the early church, if there was any possibility of the church being lost, the primary cause would have been human beings themselves. Yes, it is the work of their flesh. If they were not filled with the Holy Spirit and led by the Spirit to build up the church, it would have been extremely difficult to keep it going.
What if the disciples had gone on a missionary journey with only the excitement and passion of their own intense experience of meeting the resurrected Lord? Certainly, excitement and passion are contagious. But only for a short while. At the most it would have lasted 10 years, and once the disciples had died, there would have been no one left on earth who would have known that excitement. This is the limit of the power of the flesh. This is why Jesus told them to wait for the Holy Spirit.
Is there anyone whose power has run out? Yes, there is a limit to the power of the flesh. As we age, this will become more and more evident day by day. But we still rely on our flesh. Yes, that is true even if we are Christians.
We say with our mouths, “The Holy Spirit,” but it is only a call out, and we rely only on the power of our own flesh day in and day out without trusting in His work. If we are still stuck in that way of life and feel limited, there is still one hope for us.
It is that hope, which we should have placed before all from the very beginning. Yes, it is to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
The book of Galatians, which we read earlier, makes clear the “works of the flesh” and then describes the fruit that the Holy Spirit produces.
Yes, it is not fruit that is produced by human power, but fruit that is produced when we are filled with the Holy Spirit.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law (Galatians 5:22-23). Who would not want these things to be produced in their hearts?
No one would deny that these things can make our lives better, and that these things can bring blessings to our relationships with others and repair broken relationships.
People in the Lord, this image of living filled with the fruit of the Spirit. Isn’t this the image of ourselves that we are hoping for? Doesn’t your husband or wife, and children desire to see this fruit in your heart? And don’t you desire to see this fruit in them?
Then the decision of what we should do should be obvious to us.
We human beings were made alive by receiving the breath of God, that is the Spirit of God. Christians became Christians by believing in Jesus through the Holy Spirit. Our lives and our Christian life are initiated by the Spirit.
But before we know it, we are living as if we have no one to rely on but ourselves, as if we can accomplish everything with the power of our flesh. Paul said of such people,
Are you so foolish? After beginning by means of the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by means of the flesh? (Galatians 3:3)
What one must not do, is to go against the plan God has laid out. Please understand that there is no victory on our side in this matter.
Please remember, God made us to live filled with the Holy Spirit and to perfect ourselves by that Spirit. Why do we try to complete ourselves in the flesh, when we began in the Spirit?
As I was preparing this message, I deeply reflected on this matter. This is because I realized that I myself have sometimes forgotten or underestimated the work of the Holy Spirit. I was shown how though I say “Holy Spirit, Holy Spirit,” that I have relied on the power of my own flesh. Therefore, I deeply repent of this, and also would like to live each day expecting the work of the Holy Spirit.
Before the first church was born, Jesus said, “Wait for the Holy Spirit.” And in that upper room in Jerusalem, Jesus’ disciples received that promised Holy Spirit. This was the moment when the first Church on earth was born.
Brothers and sisters in the Lord of the San Diego Japanese Christian Church, since the church also began with the coming of the Holy Spirit, we must build up this church with the Holy Spirit.
This is the most important thing for us to build “a church pleasing to God,” and everything must start here.
There is no better way to live than to be filled with the Holy Spirit When we are filled with the Holy Spirit, we will be changed, and if we are changed, our homes, workplaces, and church will be changed as well.
Needless to say, God will be pleased with this. People in the Lord, let us ask the Lord earnestly to fill us with the Holy Spirit. Let us pray and ask that the Spirit of the Lord will lead this church. Let us pray.
