今日、伝道メッセージが語られる時、このような語りかけがなされることがあります「さぁ、今あなたの心の扉を開き、あなたの王座にイエス様に座っていただきなさい。あなたの方から、手をノブにかけ、扉を開け、イエス様を心にお招きしましょう。その時にあなたは救われます」。
この言葉は大方、正しいことを言っています。.なぜなら、この言葉はあのヨハネ黙示録の御言葉を念頭においたものだからです。
「だから、熱心に努めよ。悔い改めよ。見よ、わたしは戸口に立ってたたいている。だれか私の声を聞いて戸を開けるものがあれば、わたしは中に入ってその者と共に食事をし、彼もまた、わたしと共に食事をするであろう。」（黙示録３章１９節－２０節）
人々はこのように、ここから先の招きの言葉を語ります。しかし、一つ、大切なことを忘れていませんか。それは「戸を開けなさい」の前にはっきりと書かれている言葉です。そう、「熱心に努めよ。悔い改めよ」”So be earnest and repent”.（１９）という言葉です。そして、その後に「戸を開けよ」とここには書かれているのです。

神に喜ばれる教会（６）：まず、悔い改めありき

使徒行伝９章３１を拝読します。
『こうして教会は、ユダヤ、ガリラヤ、サマリヤ全地方にわたって平安を保ち、基礎がかたまり、主をおそれ聖霊にはげまされて歩み、次第に信徒の数を増していった』
使徒行伝に記録されている教会とは、この地上に最初に生まれた教会のことであり、その教会がどのようにして世界に広がっていったのかということがここには記されています。このことは今から約２０００年前の出来事ですが、そこに私達の教会がならうべき姿があります。
本多牧師と私は「神に喜ばれる教会」というメッセージシリーズを毎週、お話ししており、これまで「聖霊」や「祈り」そして「聖書の言葉」についてお話ししてきました。これらのものは最初の教会が誕生する時に、絶対不可欠なものであり、それは今日の教会にも不可欠なものです。
彼らは聖霊を受け、祈り、聖書の言葉を語り、イエス・キリストが予め言われていたように、エルサレム、ユダヤとサマリヤの全土、さらに地の果てまで、イエス・キリストの証人となったのです（使徒行伝１章８節）。
その時に聖霊を受けたペテロは立ち上がり、神の言葉を人々に語った、そのメッセージについて先週、本多牧師は語りました（使徒行伝２章１４節－３６節）。その言葉はペテロの考えに従ったものではなく、それらは既に旧約聖書に記録されていることであり、
ペテロは預言者ヨエルやダビデの言葉、すなわち聖書の言葉を用いて語りました。そして、そのペテロのメッセージを聞いた者達の反応について使徒行伝はこう記しています。
37人々はこれを聞いて、強く心を刺され、ペテロやほかの使徒たちに、「兄弟たちよ、わたしたちは、どうしたらよいのでしょうか」と言った（使徒行伝２章３７節）
この問いかけにペテロはこう答えました。
38すると、ペテロが答えた、「悔い改めなさい。そして、あなたがたひとりびとりが罪のゆるしを得るために、イエス・キリストの名によって、バプテスマを受けなさい。そうすれば、あなたがたは聖霊の賜物を受けるであろう。39この約束は、われらの主なる神の召しにあずかるすべての者、すなわちあなたがたと、あなたがたの子らと、遠くの者一同とに、与えられているものである」。40ペテロは、ほかになお多くの言葉であかしをなし、人々に「この曲った時代から救われよ」と言って勧めた。41そこで、彼の勧めの言葉を受けいれた者たちは、バプテスマを受けたが、その日、仲間に加わったものが三千人ほどあった。（使徒行伝２章３８節―４１節）
今日はこのところから一つのことに注目をしたいと思います。それは「わたしたちはどうしたらよいのか？」と問われた時にペテロが開口一番、語りました「悔い改めなさい」ということです。
私達はもともと、神と共にあるべき存在として、神から命を授けられました。この命は自分で勝ち取ったものではなく、自分の意思ゆえにこれまで保たれてきたものではありません。
人類で一番最初に、この命が与えられたアダムとエバは神が彼らのために備えた完璧な環境、エデンの園に暮らしておりました。しかし、彼らの心に「神のようになりたい」という思いが起こりました。そうです、その時、彼らは自分の命は神から与えられたものであり、その神の恵みとあわれみによって生かされているということ、すなわち自分達は被造物であるということを忘れ、自らを神と等しいものとなることを望んだのです。こうして彼らの心に罪が入りました。
その結果、罪なきお方の前に罪ある者が留まり続けることはできず、彼らは神に対する恐れと共に、神を避け、逃れるようにして園を出て行きました。以来、人間はアダムとエバのように、神から逃れるようにして、各々が自分の好むままに生きています。
イエス様の先駆者にバプテスマのヨハネという人がいます。彼はイエス様に先立って荒野で神のメッセージを人々に伝えました。彼が開口一番、荒野で伝えたメッセージは何でしたか。マタイはこのように記しています。
『1そのころ、バプテスマのヨハネが現れ、ユダヤの荒野で教を宣べて言った、2「悔い改めよ、天国は近づいた」』（マタイ３章１節－２節）。
このヨハネのメッセージに人々はどのように応答したのでしょうか。
5すると、エルサレムとユダヤ全土とヨルダン附近一帯の人々が、ぞくぞくとヨハネのところに出てきて、6自分の罪を告白し、ヨルダン川でヨハネからバプテスマを受けた（マタイ３章５節－６節）。
私達は大抵、互いの関係がスムーズにいくことを願い、心を配ります。ですから、相手を動揺させるようなことは言わないように心がけます。しかし、ヨハネは違いました。ヨハネは人を恐れず、神を畏れ、たとえそれが聞く者の耳に痛いことであっても、真実を語る人でした。言い方を変えれば、そのことは彼がどれだけ彼の元に来る者達のことを思い、愛していたかということを意味します。
ヨハネは荒野にぞくぞくとやってくる者達に向かい、「悔い改め」を力強く迫ったのです。そのメッセージは神から託されたものであり、それを民に伝えなければならないという確信と使命がヨハネの心にあったからです。そして、それを聞いた者達は自分の罪を告白し、ヨルダン川でヨハネから洗礼を受けたのです・・・。
このヨハネより少し遅れて、世に出てきたイエス・キリストはヘロデによって、このヨハネが捕らえられたということを聞き、ガリラヤへ退かれ、そこで神の言葉を語りはじめました。イエスの宣教の始まりです。
12さて、イエスはヨハネが捕えられたと聞いて、ガリラヤへ退かれた。13そしてナザレを去り、ゼブルンとナフタリとの地方にある海べの町カペナウムに行って住まわれた。14これは預言者イザヤによって言われた言が、成就するためである。15「ゼブルンの地、ナフタリの地、海に沿う地方、ヨルダンの向こうの地、異邦人のガリラヤ、16暗黒の中に住んでいる民は大いなる光を見、死の地、死の陰に住んでいる人々に、光がのぼった」。17この時からイエスは教を宣べはじめて言われた、「悔い改めよ、天国は近づいた」（マタイ４章１２節－１７節）。
その時に、イエス様が開口一番に人間に伝えた言葉は「悔い改めよ、天国は近づいた」（マタイ４章１７節）という言葉でした。
今日、伝道メッセージが語られる時、このような語りかけがなされることがあります「さぁ、今あなたの心の扉を開き、あなたの王座にイエス様に座っていただきなさい。あなたの心の扉のノブは外側にはなく、イエス様はそのドアを開けられないのです。そのドアは内側からしか開けられないのです。ですからあなたの方から、手をノブにかけ、扉を開け、イエス様を心にお招きしましょう。その時にあなたは救われます」。
この言葉は大方、正しいことを言っています。.なぜなら、この言葉はあのヨハネ黙示録の御言葉を念頭においたものだからです。
「そこで、あなたに勧める。裕福になるように火で精錬された金をわたしから買うがよい。裸の恥をさらさないように、身に着ける白い衣を買い、また、見えるようになるために、目に塗る薬を買うがよい。わたしは愛する者を皆、叱ったり、鍛えたりする。だから、熱心に努めよ。悔い改めよ。見よ、わたしは戸口に立ってたたいている。だれか私の声を聞いて戸を開けるものがあれば、わたしは中に入ってその者と共に食事をし、彼もまた、わたしと共に食事をするであろう。」（黙示録３章１８節－２０節）
さぁ、心の扉を開いて、イエスを招き入れなさい。心の王座にイエスに座っていただくのです。人々はこのように、ここからこの招きの言葉を語ります。
しかし、一つ、大切なことを忘れていませんか。それは「戸を開けなさい」の前にはっきりと書かれている言葉です。そう、「熱心に努めよ。悔い改めよ」（１９）という言葉です。そして、その後に「戸を開けよ」とここには書かれているのです。
ルカによる福音書１５章にはイエスが語られた「放蕩息子」のたとえ話が書かれています（ルカ１５章１１節ー３２節）。本来おるべき父のもとにおることをよしとせず、自分の好きなように生きたいがために、父の遺産を早々に受け、家を出て行った弟息子が好き放題の放蕩生活を送り、遺産が全て尽きてしまいます。
彼は自らの姿を見て「本心に立ち返り」（ルカ１５章１７節）、父のもとに立ち返る決心をします。彼はその時、豚の世話をしており、豚の餌を食べたくなるほどに飢えていました。
その彼が実家に帰るにあたり、体を洗い、身なりを整える余裕などなかったでしょう。
悪臭を放ち、垢にまみれ、着の身着のまま家に戻ったことでしょう。そう、それはありのままの彼の姿です。
確かに身なりはそれでいいのです。実際にその息子に父はかけより、ありのままの彼を抱きしめ、接吻しました。しかし、彼の心はどうなのでしょうか。かつて遺産を父親に求めた時、彼はその心に思ったことでしょう。
「こんな親父のところに居ては息が詰まりそうだ。まとまった金をもらって、好きなように生きよう」。彼が得た遺産とは本来、親が死んでから分けられるものです。しかし、彼は父がまだ生存中にそれを求めたのです。
これは当時の慣習から考えれば親に対する冒とくです。彼は父と共にいることは願わず、自分で苦労して得たものではない、父の財産だけを求め、それを全て使い果たしたのです。この息子に弁解の余地はありません。
この彼が父のもとに帰るにあたり、彼がすべきことは何でしょうか。彼が父に言うべきことがあります。「立って、父のところへ帰って、こう言おう、父よ、わたしは天に対しても、あなたにむかっても、罪を犯しました」（ルカ１５章１８節）。彼は父にそう言おうと思って、帰ってきたのです。この言葉は明らかに彼の悔い改めであり、罪の告白です。
主にある皆さん、「ありのままでいい」ということは、神様からかけ離れていた時の心のまま、そのことを悔い改めることなく、父なる神のもとに立ち返ってもいいということではないのです。
私達はパウロという人を知っています。かつて彼はキリスト教を迫害することに情熱を注いでいましたが、回心し、キリストを伝えることに命をかける者となりました。
その彼が自分は生涯をかけて、これまで自分は何をしてきたのかということを端的に一言で言い尽くしている言葉が使徒行伝に記録されています。そう、彼はこう言っているのです。
「ユダヤ人にもギリシア人にも、神に対する悔い改めと、わたしたちの主イエスに対する信仰とを、強く勧めてきたのである」（使徒行伝２０章２１節）
彼は自分の前に立つ人間がどこの国の人間であれ、私は悔い改めとイエスに対する信仰をいつも強く勧めてきたのだと言いました。
主にある皆さん、パウロが伝えようとしたことはバプテスマのヨハネ、イエス・キリスト、イエスの弟子ヨハネ、そしてペテロと全く合致しているのです。そうです、パウロも人々に「神に対する悔い改め」を強く勧めたのです・・・。
私達、クリスチャンは洗礼式と聖餐式というものを執り行います。この洗礼式と聖餐式について教会は色々な受け止め方をもっています。ある教会は「今、イエスを心に受け入れた方は洗礼を受けましょう」と洗礼を、すぐその場でうながします。確かに聖霊のはたらきというのは私達の思いに限定されるものではありませんから、そのようなこともあり得ることかと思います。
聖餐式に関して「洗礼を受けていない者であっても、その時に心にイエス様を迎え入れた者は聖餐にあずかりましょう」という教会もあります。霊の世界は見えるものではなく、確かにその時、主を信じ受け入れているということもありますでしょう。確かに「善は急げ」、すぐに洗礼も聖餐を受ければいいと私達は思います。
そうすれば、その人の気持ちも満足するだろう。このことにおいて、互いの関係がきまずくなることもないでしょう。しかしながら洗礼や聖餐を「今日、受けるのか」、それとも「次回にするのか」ということはそんなに大きな問題ではありません。洗礼も聖餐も早さを競うものではないのです。（もちろん余命、数時間の方を前にした場合は状況は異なります）。
一番、大切なことは洗礼や聖餐にあずかる私達が、まず神の御前に自覚的に悔い改め、イエスの十字架を仰ぎ、信じ、そして、そのイエスを心にお招きして、心の王座に座っていただく心を備えることです。
悔い改めをスキップして、主を心の王座にお招きすることはできないでしょう。私達はこのプロセスを大切にしたいと思います。このことについてペテロははっきりと言っているではありませんか。
38すると、ペテロが答えた、「悔い改めなさい。そして、あなたがたひとりびとりが罪のゆるしを得るために、イエス・キリストの名によって、バプテスマを受けなさい。
ペテロははっきりと言っています。「悔い改め、それから洗礼を受けなさい。」
バプテスマのヨハネの「悔い改めよ」という言葉を受けて、人々はまず「自分の罪を告白し、ヨルダン川でヨハネからバプテスマを受けた」（マタイ３章６節）のです。
悔い改め、洗礼を受け、それから、自分の罪のためにイエス様が十字架で流された血と、裂かれた体を思いつつ、主の聖餐に預かるということは自然のプロセスなのです。
私達が日本語で言うところの「悔い改め」という言葉は、今日、お話ししました新約聖書の原語であるギリシア語では「立ち返る、向きを変える」という意味があります。このことはすなわち、私達が悔い改める時に、私達はそれまで神なく生き、ただ自分の願望だけで生きていた人生を悔い改め、そこから向きを変えて神と共に歩み始めることを意味しているのです。
ヨハネ、イエス様、ペテロ、そしてパウロの「悔い改めよ」というメッセージを聴いた者達は、その言葉通り、自ら悔い改め、それまでの自分の人生の歩みを神に向き直して歩み始めました。
そう、それはさかのぼること、あのアダムとエバが神を背にしてエデンの園を出ていったということによって象徴される、この世界に生きる全ての人間が神に立ち返るために不可欠なことなのです。
主にある皆さん、我々が神に背を向け、未解決の罪を内にもっている間、私達の心には何を持っても埋め合わせることができない闇があります。それはお金とか、自分の功績とか、善行によって埋め合わせることができるようなものではないのです。
私達が神から離れている限り、私達はその闇を心から取り除くことはできないのです。
人間が同じ人間に向かって「悔い改めなさい」ということ、それは真にふてぶてしいことです。
しかし、今日、お話ししてきましたことは、人が言っているのではない、それは神様の私達に対する大切なメッセージなのです。私達が神とかけ離れて生きているのなら、その神と共に生きるためのまず第一歩が「悔い改め」なのです。
キリストの復活後に「悔い改めなさい」と語ったペテロは後に書きましたペテロ第二の手紙の中でも再度、この悔い改めについて語っています。
そう、その言葉は、人々が「主イエスの再臨の約束はどうなったのか。主はまだ来ないではないか」という問いかけに対してなされました。
「ある人々がおそいと思っているように、主は約束の実行をおそくしておられるのではない。ただ、ひとりも滅びることがなく、すべての者が悔い改めに至ることを望み、あなたがたに対してながく忍耐しておられるのである」（ペテロ第二の手紙３章９節）
主イエスは再びこの地に来ると言われました。しかし、その日はまだ来ていません。なぜですか？その日が昨日、また今日ではないということの理由がここには明確に書かれています。
そう、それは神の前に私達がひとりも滅びることなく、全ての者が悔い改めに至ることを神が望んでおられるからなのです。皆さん、考えたことがありますか？今日という一日がつつがなく終わったということの理由がここには書かれているのです。主は一人の人が今日、神の前に悔い改めることを望んでおられます。
かつて取税人や罪人達と食事を共にしていたイエス様に対してパリサイ人や律法学者が「この人は罪人達を迎えて一緒に食事をしている」と苦々しい言葉をつぶやいた時、イエス様は彼らに向かってなんと言いましたか。
「よく聞きなさい。罪人がひとりでも悔い改めるなら、悔い改めを必要としない九十九人の正しい人のためにもまさる大きいよろこびが、天にあるであろう」。（ルカ１５章７節）
主にある皆さん、もう「悔い改め」についてこれ以上、申し上げる必要はありませんでしょう。もしかしたら「悔い改め」は、これまで皆さんの心の端っこにあったことなのかもしれません。しかし、このことに対して、どれだけ神様が注目しておられるか、私達は今日、見てきました。私達はこのことの重大さを否定することはできないのです。
初代の教会は心が強く刺され、悔い改めた者達によって始まったのです。それはそのまま私達の教会も同じです。主の前にこれまでの自分の罪を悔い改め、それまでの生き方を転換し、共に主と共に歩む者達の集まり、それが私達の教会、サンディエゴ日本人教会です。私達は主の恵みによりクリスチャンになっても罪を犯します。私達が「悔い改め」から卒業することは、私達が生きている限りないのです。
このシリーズが始まった最初に私は皆さんに申し上げました。私達は誰かに喜ばれる教会を目指していない。誰かの好みや都合に合った教会は目指していない。私達は神が喜ばれる教会を目指しています。
そして今日、お話したことは神が私達に望まれることであり、神が喜ばれることなのです。「え、悔い改めは神に喜ばれることなのですか」と思われる方がいるかもしれません。そうです、私達が悔い改めることを主は何よりも喜ばれます。詩篇５１篇１６節、１７節、
16 あなたはいけにえを好まれません。たといわたしが燔祭をささげてもあなたは喜ばれないでしょう。17 神の受けられるいけにえは砕けた魂です。神よ、あなたは砕けた悔いた心をかろしめられません。（詩篇５１篇１６節-１７節）
初めの教会において、聖霊は心砕けた者たちの上に注がれ、彼らは御霊の実を結びました。「悔い改めよ、神の国は近づいた」。私達は毎週、砕けた魂という捧げものを持参して、この礼拝にやってこようではありませんか。それこそが主が喜ばれる捧げ物なのですから。お祈りしましょう。
A Church Pleasing to God: First, Has Repentance

Let me read Acts 9:31.
Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace and was strengthened. Living in the fear of the Lord and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, it increased in numbers.
The church recorded in the book of Acts, is the first church on earth, and what is recorded here is how that church spread throughout the world. This happened about 2,000 years ago, and there we see the example that our church should follow.
Pastor Honda and I have been speaking weekly on “A Church Pleasing to God” as a message series, and we have talked about the “Holy Spirit,” “prayer,” and “words of the Bible”.These things were absolutely essential at the birth of the first church, and they are essential to the church today.
They received the Holy Spirit, prayed, spoke the words of the Bible, and as Jesus Christ said to them beforehand, they became witnesses of Jesus Christ in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8).
Peter, who received the Holy Spirit at that time, stood up and spoke the word of God to the people, and Pastor Honda talked about that message last week (Acts 2:14-36). Those words were not according to Peter’s thoughts, but were based on what was already recorded in the Old Testament, and Peter spoke using the words of the prophet Joel and David, that is, the words of the Bible. And the book of Acts describes the reaction of those who heard Peter’s message as follows.
37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”(Acts 2:37)
To this question, Peter responded.
38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”40 With many other words he warned them; and he pleaded with them, “Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” 41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day. (Acts 2:38-41)
Today, I would like to focus on one thing from this passage. That is, when asked, “What shall we do?”, Peter’s first words in response were “repent.”
We were originally given life by God to be together with Him. This life was not won by us, nor has it been preserved thus far because of our own will.
Adam and Eve, the first human beings to be given this life, lived in the Garden of Eden, a perfect environment prepared for them by God. However, a desire to “be like God” arose in their hearts. At that moment, they forgot that they were given life by God, kept alive by God’s grace and mercy, that is, that they were created beings, and desired to make themselves equal with God. Thus, sin entered their hearts.
As a result, being sinful they could not continue to remain in the presence of the sinless One, fearing God and wanting to avoid Him, they left the Garden as if to escape. Since then, like Adam and Eve, human beings have been trying to escape from God, each living as he or she pleases.
There was a man named John the Baptist who was a forerunner to Jesus. He preceded Jesus in preaching God’s message to the people in the wilderness. What were the first words in the message he declared in the wilderness? Matthew records it this way.
3 In those days John the Baptist came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea 2 and saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” (Matthew 3:1-2).
How did people respond to this message given by John?
5 People went out to him from Jerusalem and all Judea and the whole region of the Jordan. 6 Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River (Matthew 3:5-6).
We usually are careful, wanting our relationships to go smoothly. Therefore, we try not to say anything that might upset others. But John was different. John was a man who did not fear people, but revered God and spoke the truth, even if it hurt his hearers’ ears. In other words, it shows how much he cared for and loved those who came to him.
John faced those who were coming in droves to the wilderness, and powerfully urged them to “repent.” That message was entrusted to him by God, and he had the conviction and mission in his heart to convey it to the people. And those who heard it, confessed their sins, and were baptized by John in the Jordan River….
Jesus Christ, who came into the world a little later than this John, heard that John had been imprisoned by Herod, and retreated to Galilee, where he began to speak the Word of God. This is the beginning of Jesus’ ministry.
12 When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he withdrew to Galilee. 13 Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali— 14 to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah:15 “Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—16 the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned.” 17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” (Matthew 4:12-17)
At that time, Jesus’ first words delivered to people were, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near” (Matthew 4:17).
Today, when an evangelistic message is given, it is sometimes given in this way,「“Come, now open the door of your heart and let Jesus sit on your throne. The door knob of your heart is not on the outside, and Jesus cannot open that door.
That door can only be opened from the inside. Thus, put your hand on the door knob from your side, open the door, and invite Jesus into your heart. Then you will be saved.”
These words are, for the most part, correct. This is because these words were made with that Revelation verse in mind.
18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent. 20 Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me. (Revelation 3:18-20)
Now, open the door of your heart, and invite Jesus in. Let Jesus sit on the throne of your heart. Thus, people give an invitation from here speaking in this manner.
However, are we not forgetting one important thing? It is the words clearly written before it says “open the door”. Yes, it is the words, “So be earnest and repent” (19). And after that, it says here, “Open the door.”
In Luke 15, Jesus tells the parable of the “prodigal son” (Luke 15:11-32). Not wanting to stay with his father where he should be, and wanting to live as he pleases, the younger son receives his father’s inheritance early, leaves the home, leads a life of unrestrained debauchery doing as he pleases, and uses up all his inheritance.
When he looked at himself, “he came to his senses” (Luke 15:17), and decides to return back to his father. He was tending pigs at the time, and was so hungry that he wanted to eat the pig feed.
In going back home, he didn’t have the means to wash up and make himself presentable.
He must have returned home, stinky, covered in grime, and with only what he was wearing. Yes, it was just as he was.
Certainly, the appearance was fine. In fact, the father ran over to his son, embraced him just as he was, and kissed him. However, what about his heart? When he once asked his father for the inheritance, he must have thought in his heart.
“I’m going to suffocate if I stay with my father like this. Let me get some large sum of money and live the way I want.” The inheritance he got would have been divided after his parents died. However, he sought it while his father was still alive.
Considering the customs of the time, this showed total irreverence toward the parents. He did not desire to be with his father, but only sought his father’s wealth, which he had not earned through his own hard work, and spent it all. There is no excuse for this son.
In order to return to his father, what should he do? There are things he should say to his father. 18 “I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you’” (Luke 15:18). He went back, thinking of telling his father that. These words are clearly his repentance and confession of sin.
People in the Lord, “just as you are” does not mean, you can turn back to God the Father with the same heart as when you were far away from God without repenting of that.
We know a man named Paul. He used to be passionate about persecuting Christians, but he experienced conversion, and became a man committed to giving his life to sharing Christ.
The book of Acts records what he said in a few simple words of what he spent his entire life doing up until that time. Yes, he says this.
21 I have declared to both Jews and Greeks that they must turn to God in repentance and have faith in our Lord Jesus (Acts 20:21).
He said that no matter what country the person standing before him was from, he always strongly encouraged repentance and faith in Jesus.
People in the Lord, what Paul was trying to convey is totally consistent with John the Baptist, Jesus Christ, John the disciple of Jesus, and Peter. That’s right, Paul also strongly encouraged people to “turn to God in repentance”….
We Christians have baptism and communion. The Church has a variety of ways of viewing baptism and communion.Some churches immediately invite baptism on the spot, saying, “If you have accepted Jesus into your heart, get baptized now”. It is true that the work of the Holy Spirit is not limited to our ideas, so it is possible for such a thing to happen.
Regarding communion, some churches say, “Even if you have not been baptized, if you have received Jesus into your heart at this time, partake of the communion”.The spirit world is not something that can be seen, and certainly there will be times when someone believes in and accepts the Lord. Indeed, “strike while the iron is hot”, we think we should immediately receive both baptism and communion.
That would satisfy that person’s feelings. There would be no bad feelings in our relationship with each other in this matter.However, it is not such a big deal whether you receive baptism or communion “today” or “next time.” Neither baptism nor communion is a speed race. (Of course, the situation is different if you are in front of someone with a few hours to live).
The most important thing is that we, who receive baptism and partake of communion, first repent consciously before God, look up to the cross of Jesus, believe, and prepare our hearts to invite that Jesus to sit on the throne of our hearts. Skip repentance, and you will not be able to invite the Lord to the throne of your heart. We want to value this process. Is not Peter very clear about this?
38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Peter says it clearly. “Repent and be baptized.”
In response to John the Baptist’s words, “Repent,” the people first6 Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River (Matthew 3:5-6).
It is a natural process to repent, be baptized, and then partake of communion, remembering the blood of Jesus shed on the cross for our sins and His body broken for us.
The word “repentance,” in Greek which is the original language of the New Testament which I am speaking from today, means “to turn around or turn the other way”. This means that when we repent, we repent of the life we had lived without God—living only according to our own desires, and from there we turn around and begin to walk with God.
Those who heard John, Jesus, Peter, and Paul’s message, “Repent,”repented according to that word, and began to correct how they were living up to that time to be in line with God.
Yes, it goes way back, to what is symbolized by Adam and Eve turning their backs on God and leaving the Garden of Eden, that it is essential for every human being in this world to turn back to God.
Dear people in the Lord, while we turn our backs on God, and have unresolved sin inside, there is a darkness in our hearts that cannot be amended by anything. It is not something that can be amended by money, one’s accomplishments, or good deeds.
As long as we are separated from God, we will never truly rid ourselves of that darkness.
It is truly brazen, for a human being to say to the same human being, “Repent.”
However, what I have been talking about today is not what a person is saying, it is God’s important message to us. If we are living apart from God, the first step toward living with Him is “repentance.”
Peter, who spoke of “repentance” after Christ’s resurrection, spoke of this repentance again in what he wrote later in 2 Peter.
Yes, the words were made in response to people asking, “What happened to the promise of the second coming of the Lord Jesus? The Lord has not come yet, has he?”
9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9)..
The Lord Jesus said He would come again to this earth. But that day has not come yet. Why? The reason why that day was not yesterday and not today is clearly stated here.
Yes, it is God’s desire of not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. Have you ever thought about it? The reason why this day has ended smoothly is written here. The Lord desires for a person to repent before Him today. What did Jesus say to the Pharisees and scribes when they muttered against Him, “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them”?
7 I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent (Luke 15:7).
Dear people in the Lord, I don’t need to say any more about “repentance” do I? Perhaps “repentance” is something that has been on the fringes of your mind. However, today, we have seen how much attention God is paying towards this. We cannot deny the importance of this.
The first church was started by those whose hearts were strongly pierced and who repented. Just as it was it is the same with our church. Repenting of our past sins before the Lord, changing our previous way of living, and gathering together to walk together with the Lord, that is our church, the San Diego Japanese Christian Church.
Although we have become Christians by the Lord’s grace, we still sin. As long as we are alive, we will not graduate from “repentance”.
At the beginning of this series, I said to all of you. We do not seek to be a church that pleases someone. We do not seek to be a church that caters to someone’s preference. We seek to be a church pleasing to God.
And what we have talked about today is what God desires for us and what pleases Him. You may be thinking, “Really, is repentance pleasing to God?”
That’s right, the Lord is most pleased that we repent. Psalm 51:16-17
16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.17 My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise (Psalm 51:16-17).
In the first church, the Holy Spirit was poured out on the brokenhearted, and they bore the fruit of the Spirit. “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” Let us come to this worship service each week, bringing with us the offering of our broken spirit. That is the kind of offering the Lord is pleased with. Let us pray.
