われました（マタイ５章５節）。あなたは、「優しい」「柔和」という言葉を聞いて
、何を思い浮かべますか？最初の２つの「さいわい」は、主に内向的なものです。自
分が心の貧しい者であることを謙虚に認識し、神の前で自分の罪深い状態を嘆くこと
です。
しかし、この第３の「幸いである」は外に向かって、他の人々とどのように関
わるかについて述べています。柔和であることは、他者に対する真に謙遜な、自然で
適切な表現です。イエス様との関係と通して、私たちは彼のへりくだった心と柔和な
生き方を学ぶことが出来ます（マタイ１１章２９節）（本多）。

私たちは柔和でありましょう

■The other day, I went to my son’s wrestling dual meet.先日、息子のレスリングの対抗試合に行きました。
■It was Senior Night at the opposing high school where the dual meet was hosted.この日は、対抗試合が開催された相手高校のシニアナイトでした。
■Four seniors of that school were honored before the varsity wrestling matches began.その学校の４人のシニアが、レスリングの試合が始まる前に表彰されました。
■About half way through the dual meet, there was one particular match that truly touched my heart. 対抗試合の中盤、ある対戦が私の心に感動を与えました。
■The match itself seemed to be running in slow motion before my eyes.その対戦そのものが、目の前でスローモーションで行われているような気がしました。
■It was a quiet match, almost like a dance without any music.まるで音楽のないダンスのような静かな対戦でした。
■It became obvious to me as I watched, that one of the wrestlers was not capable of competing at the level of what would normally be considered varsity wrestling.見ていて明らかなのは、あるレスラーが、通常なら代表選手とみなされるレベルにはないということでした。
■It also became obvious that the other wrestler was not going all out, but was allowing his body to react to the movements of the other wrestler.またその相手のレスラーが全力ではなく、相手の動きに自分の体を合わせて反応していたことも明らかになりました。
■So, there were a lot of take downs and then escapes, but it was all done quietly and gently.ですから、テイクダウンから逃れることが多かったのですが、すべてが静かに、穏やかになされたのです。
■This went on for 3 periods, until finally, the one wrestler who graciously yielded himself to his opponent was pinned.これが三ピリオド続き、最後は相手に潔く身を任せたレスラーがピンされました。
■The win went to the senior from the opposing school, which allowed him to have his arm raised by the referee and to receive applause from those who were in attendance.勝利したのは相手校のシニアで、審判から腕を上げられ、会場にいた人たちから拍手を受けました。
■However, the points for the match went to the gentle wrestler as a forfeit win for my son’s school.しかし、この対戦のポイントは、私の息子の学校の柔和なレスラーの棄権勝ちとして総合得点に加算されました。
■I could not help but to watch the last period with tears in my eyes, because I saw a beautiful scene on display.最後の場面は美しい光景が映し出されていたので、思わず涙を流して見てしまいました。
■What I saw was gentleness in action.私が見たのは、柔和な行動でした。
■Matthew 5:5（マタイ５章５節）“Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.”「柔和な人たちは、さいわいである、彼らは地を受けつぐであろう。」
■What comes to your mind, when you think of the word “gentle” or “meek”?あなたは、「優しい」「柔和」という言葉を聞いて、何を思い浮かべますか？
■The first two beatitudes are mostly inward: 最初の２つの「さいわい」は、主に内向的なものです。
■Humble recognition that one is poor in spirit and to mourn over one’s sinful condition before God.自分が心の貧しい者であることを謙虚に認識し、神の前で自分の罪深い状態を嘆くことです。
■However, this third beatitude deals with how one relates outwardly with other people.しかし、この第３の「幸いである」は外に向かって、他の人々とどのように関わるかについて述べています。
■Gentleness is the natural and appropriate expression of genuine humility toward others.柔和であることは、他者に対する真に謙遜な、自然で適切な表現です。
■The Greek word that Jesus uses for the word “gentle” means “domesticated.”イエス様が使っているギリシャ語の「柔和」は「飼い慣らされた」という意味です。
■The main idea behind the word “gentle” was strength under control, like a strong stallion that was trained to do the job instead of running wild.「柔和」という言葉の裏には、暴走するのではなく、仕事をするために鍛えられた強い種馬のような、抑制された強さが主な考え方としてありました。
■In the case of Jesus, we would not consider Him in any way to be out of control or running wild. イエス様の場合は、彼は決して抑制されることなく、暴走しているわけではありません。
■However, the idea of strength under control is an appropriate way to look at Jesus’ gentleness.しかし、抑制された強さという考え方は、イエス様の柔和さを見るのに適切な方法です。
■Remember, He is the Son of God. He is the King of kings and Lord of lords! 覚えておいてください、彼は神の御子です。 王の王、主の主なのです。
■We cannot fully fathom His power and authority, although we have seen glimpses of it during His earthly life in a human body. 私達は、彼の力と権威を完全に理解することはできませんが、人間の肉体を持つ地上での生活の中に、その片鱗を見ることができました。
■However, one incident in the life of Jesus, I believe, shows His true gentleness in terms of strength under control.イエス様の生涯の出来事は、抑制された強さという点で、彼の本物の柔和さを示していると思うのです。
■It was when Jesus was arrested, leading to His trials and then crucifixion.それは、イエス様が捕らえられ、裁判と十字架とに導かれた時のことです。
■One of His disciples, which we know to be Peter, acted rashly and harshly by so-called trying to defend Jesus.弟子の一人のペテロは、イエス様を守ろうとして、軽率で荒々しい行動をとりました。
■Peter cut off the ear of one of the high priest’s slaves (Matthew 26:51).ペテロは大祭司の僕の片耳を切り落したのです（マタイ２６章５１節）。
■Here was Jesus’ response to what Peter had done.ペテロがしたことに対して、イエス様はこのように反応されました。
■Matthew 26:52-54（マタイ２６章５２—５４節）52 Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place; for all those who take up the sword shall perish by the sword.53 Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels? 54 How then will the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say that it must happen this way?” 52そこで、イエスは彼に言われた、「あなたの剣をもとの所におさめなさい。剣をとる者はみな、剣で滅びる。53それとも、わたしが父に願って、天の使たちを十二軍団以上も、今つかわしていただくことができないと、あなたは思うのか。54しかし、それでは、こうならねばならないと書いてある聖書の言葉は、どうして成就されようか」。
■Do you know what a legion is? In military terms that is 6,000 soldiers.軍団とは何か、ご存じですか？ 軍事用語では６０００人の兵士のことです。
■So what Jesus was saying here was that He had more than 72,000 angels that could defend Him at His disposal.つまり、イエス様がここで言わんとしたことは、彼を守ることができる７２，０００以上の天使が必要であれば用意されていると言うことでした。
■Do you know how many angels it took to strike down 185,000 Assyrian soldiers in their own camp in one night?一晩で１８万５千人のアッシリア兵を撃退するために、どれだけの天使が必要だったか知っていますか？
■It took one of God’s angels (2 Kings 19:35)! 神の御使い一人でした（第二列王記１９章３５節）。
■However, this isn’t even the full display of Jesus’ power and authority, for in reality, Jesus did not need to be defended.しかし、これはイエス様の力と権威の全てを表しているものではなく、実際には、イエス様は守られる必要などなかったのです。
■What we see is that He showed incredible gentleness in His life on this earth in dealing with proud people who opposed and rejected Him.
私達が知っていることは、彼はこの地上の生涯において、ご自分に反対し拒絶する傲慢な人々に対して、信じられないほどの柔和さを示されたということです。
■At the same time, knowing Jesus’ power and authority assures us of the truth in His words to us when He says, “Blessed are the gentle”.同時に、イエス様の力と権威を知ることで「柔和な人たちは、さいわいである」と言う彼の言葉の真理を確信することができるのです。
■Listen to the following invitation from Jesus to rest in Him and to learn gentleness and humility from Him.イエス様のもとで休み、柔和でへりくだった心を彼から学ぶようにと言う、イエス様の次の招きに耳を傾けましょう。
■Matthew 11:28-30（マタイ１１章２８—３０節）28“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 28すべて重荷を負うて苦労している者は、わたしのもとにきなさい。あなたがたを休ませてあげよう。
■29Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 29わたしは柔和で心のへりくだった者であるから、わたしのくびきを負うて、わたしに学びなさい。そうすれば、あなたがたの魂に休みが与えられるであろう。
■30For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” 30わたしのくびきは負いやすく、わたしの荷は軽いからである」。
■While on this earth, Jesus was not offended by or out of control in His dealings with people.この地上にいた時、イエス様は人々への対応で気分を害したり、暴走したりすることはありませんでした。
■Jesus lived perfectly in this sinful world. He did so with gentleness and humility.イエス様は、この罪深い世界で完璧に生きました。 彼は、柔和さと謙遜さをもってそうしました。
■As the Son of God, He fully lived righteously and graciously at all times.神の御子として、常に正しく、慈悲深く生きたのです。
■Yet, the reality is that we easily get weary and heavy-laden by the things of this world, including our own sinfulness and the sinfulness of others.しかし、現実の私達は、自分の罪や他人の罪など、この世のものにたやすく疲れ、重荷を背負ってしまいます。
■We are called to find rest in Jesus, and to learn and live with His gentle and humble heart.私達は、イエス様に安らぎを見出し、彼の柔和な心と謙虚な心を学び、生きるよう呼びかけられているのです。
■When we come to Jesus in humble repentance and faith, we are promised eternal life, 私達が謙虚な悔い改めと信仰をもってイエス様のもとに来る時、私達には永遠の命、
■that is an eternal and righteous relationship with God as His children. つまり神の子として神と永遠に正しい関係を保つことが約束されているのです。
■As such, we can be secure in our identity in Christ, そのため、私達はキリストにある自分のアイデンティティに安心し、
■live without fear of what others may say or do to us, and be gentle and humble in our dealings with others.他者からの言動を恐れることなく生き、他者に対して柔和で謙虚であることができるのです。
■To better understand gentleness or meekness as a principle of Christian character, let’s look at Psalm 37:1-11:クリスチャンの性質の原則としての優しさ、柔和さをよりよく理解するために、詩篇３７章１—１１節を見ましょう。
■Psalm 37:1-11（詩篇３７篇１—１１節）1Do not fret because of those who are evil or be envious of those who do wrong; 2 for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away. 3 Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. 4 Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart. 5 Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him and He will do this: He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun. 7 Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes. 8 Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret—it leads only to evil.9 For those who are evil will be destroyed, but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land. 10 A little while, and the wicked will be no more; though you look for them, they will not be found. 11 But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy peace and prosperity.1悪をなす者のゆえに、心を悩ますな。不義を行う者のゆえに、ねたみを起すな。 2彼らはやがて草のように衰え、青菜のようにしおれるからである。3主に信頼して善を行え。そうすればあなたはこの国に住んで、安きを得る。 4主によって喜びをなせ。主はあなたの心の願いをかなえられる。5あなたの道を主にゆだねよ。主に信頼せよ、主はそれをなしとげ、6あなたの義を光のように明らかにし、あなたの正しいことを真昼のように明らかにされる。7主の前にもだし、耐え忍びて主を待ち望め。おのが道を歩んで栄える者のゆえに、悪いはかりごとを遂げる人のゆえに、心を悩ますな。 evil. 8怒りをやめ、憤りを捨てよ。心を悩ますな、これはただ悪を行うに至るのみだ。9悪を行う者は断ち滅ぼされ、主を待ち望む者は国を継ぐからである。10悪しき者はただしばらくで、うせ去る。あなたは彼の所をつぶさに尋ねても彼はいない。11しかし柔和な者は国を継ぎ、豊かな繁栄をたのしむことができる。
■What do we learn from this Scripture passage about gentleness?この聖書箇所から、私達は「柔和さ」について何を学ぶことができるでしょうか。
■According to Psalm 37, the meek (gentle) are those who: trust in the Lord and do good (verse 3), 詩篇３７篇によると、柔和な人とは、主に信頼して善を行い（３節）、
■commit their way to the Lord (verse 5), are still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him (verse 7) 自分の道を主にゆだね（５節）、主の前にもだし、忍耐強く主を待ち望み（７節）、
■and refrain from anger and turn from wrath (verse 8).怒りをやめ、憤りを捨てる（８節）人であります。
■Note that verse 11 uses the words Jesus quoted from: “the meek will inherit the land”.１１節では、イエス様が引用された「柔和な者は国を継ぐ」という言葉が使われていることに注目しましょう。
■In this psalm, we find a person who neither fights their enemies back nor defends themself against their accusers, この詩篇には、敵を迎え撃つことも、告発者から身を守ることもせず、
■but, rather, simply turns their whole life over to God.ただ自分の全人生を神に委ねている人の姿が描かれています。
■To be gentle means, “to have a quiet confidence in God,” “a recognition of and submission to God’s authority.”柔和であることは「神に対して静かな信頼を持つこと」、「神の権威を認め、従うこと」です。
■Those who live a life of submission to God’s authority will inherit the earth.神の権威に従って生きる者が、地を受けつぐのです。
■From a practical standpoint as it relates to us in our daily life, being gentle should help us to love our neighbor as ourself, 私達の日常生活の具体的なことに関連することですが、柔和であることは、隣人を自分のように愛すること、
■and in sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ with others.そしてイエス・キリストの福音を他の人々と分かち合うことに役立つはずです。
■There are numerous Bible verses that point out the importance of gentleness in our daily dealings with people.日々の人との関わりの中で、柔和である大切さを指摘する聖書箇所は数多くあります。
■Some of these exhortations are given in the negative, that is to not be harsh, which is the opposite of being gentle.その中には、「荒々しくするな」というような否定的な言葉もあり、それは「柔和」の反対です。
■Proverbs 15:1（箴言１５章１節）A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.柔かい答えは憤りをとどめ、激しい言葉は怒りをひきおこす。
■Colossians 3:18-20（コロサイ３章１８—２０節）18 Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. 9 Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them. 20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.8妻たる者よ、夫に仕えなさい。それが、主にある者にふさわしいことである。19夫たる者よ、妻を愛しなさい。つらくあたってはいけない。20子たる者よ、何事についても両親に従いなさい。これが主に喜ばれることである。
■1 Timothy 5:1-2（第一テモテ５章１—２節）1 Do not rebuke an older man harshly, but exhort him as if he were your father. Treat younger men as brothers, 2 older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity. 1老人をとがめてはいけない。むしろ父親に対するように、話してあげなさい。若い男には兄弟に対するように、2年とった女には母親に対するように、若い女には、真に純潔な思いをもって、姉妹に対するように、勧告しなさい。
■Titus 3:1-2（テトス３章１—２節）1 Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, 2 to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and always to be gentle toward everyone.1あなたは彼らに勧めて、支配者、権威ある者に服し、これに従い、いつでも良いわざをする用意があり、2だれをもそしらず、争わず、寛容であって、すべての人に対してどこまでも柔和な態度を示すべきことを、思い出させなさい。
■Let me ask you. Which do you respond better to: A harsh person or a gentle person?みなさんにお尋ねします。あなたは厳しい人と柔和な人のどちらにより良く反応しますか？
■Dear youth, do you like it when your parents or teachers talk to you harshly or gently?ユースの皆さん、あなたは両親や先生から厳しく何かを言われるのと優しく言われるのと、どちらが好きですか？
■Dear people in the Lord, what has been your own personal experience? 主にある皆さん、ご自身の体験はいかがでしょうか？
■Did things go better for you when you were harsh toward someone or when you were gentle toward someone? 誰かに厳しくした時と、優しくした時とでは、どちらがうまくいったでしょうか？
■Matthew 5:5（マタイ５章５節）“Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth.”「柔和な人たちは、さいわいである、彼らは地を受けつぐであろう。」
■As a church family, we are exhorted to be gentle in the following manner. 教会の家族として、私たちは次のように柔和でいるようにと諭されています。
■Galatians 6:1（ガラテヤ６章１節）Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, 兄弟たちよ。もしもある人が罪過に陥っていることがわかったなら、
■you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted.霊の人であるあなたがたは、柔和な心をもって、その人を正しなさい。それと同時に、もしか自分自身も誘惑に陥ることがありはしないかと、反省しなさい。
■Even in the face of adversity and persecution, as part of our witness for Christ, we are exhorted to be gentle.逆境や迫害に直面しても、キリストを証しするために、私たちは柔和であるようにと勧められています。
■1 Peter 3:14-16（第一ペテロ３章１４—１６節） 14 But even if you should suffer for the sake of righteousness, you are blessed. And do not fear their intimidation, and do not be troubled, 14しかし、万一義のために苦しむようなことがあっても、あなたがたはさいわいである。彼らを恐れたり、心を乱したりしてはならない。

■those who revile your good behavior in Christ will be put to shame. そのようにののしったことを恥じいるであろう。
■This Scripture passage written by Peter is quite significant.ペテロが書いたこの最後の聖書箇所は、非常に重要です。
■Peter was not a man known for his gentleness. He was a very abrupt and somewhat harsh person.ペテロは、柔和さで知られていた人物ではありませんでした。とても唐突で、どこか荒々しい人でした。
■Remember the incident of him cutting off the ear of the high priest’s slave? 大祭司の僕の耳を切り落とした出来事を覚えていますか？
■However, like a wild stallion that learned to be tamed, he humbly submitted his life to Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, he humbly submitted his life to Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, and by the work of the Holy Spirit in him, Peter learned Jesus’ heart of gentleness and humility.しかし、飼いならされることを知った野生の雄馬のように、彼は謙虚に自分の人生を主であり救い主であるイエス・キリストに委ね、彼の内に働かれた聖霊によって、ペテロはイエスの柔和でへりくだった心を学んだのです。
■We too are invited to learn Jesus’ heart of gentleness and humility. 私達もイエス様の柔和でへりくだった心を学ぶよう招かれているのです。
■We cannot go wrong in this world by being gentle, especially when we submit ourselves to God in everything. 全てにおいて神様に従う時、私達は柔和であることで、この世界で間違った方向に進むことはありません。
■The Lord will see to it that we will inherit the earth in His perfect will and timing.主は、御自身の完全な御心とタイミングで、私達が地を受け継ぐことができるようになされるのです。
