かつて私達の教団に加入する牧師の面接に立ち会ったことがありました。その時、既にリタイアした牧師が、神学校を出たばかりの若い牧師に一言、聞きました。
「あなたは教えられやすい人ですか？」
彼は「はい」と答えました。その牧師はニコッと笑い、「それなら大丈夫」と言いました。その時に面接を受けた牧師は今、とてもよい牧会をしています。言うまでもありません。教えられやすいというのは若者だけではなく、どんなに高齢になっても、「教えられやすい人」が受ける恩恵は代え難い祝福なのです。神の恵みと祝福は水が低いところに向かって流れるように、教えられやすい人のもとに余すところなく注がれていくといっても過言ではありません。
今日の世界、３０年前には議論にならなかったことがたくさんありますでしょう。その中には教会や教派すら分裂しかねないものがあります。インターネットを通して、無数の主義主張が世界を駆け巡っています。しかし、自らをChrist-chanと呼ぶのなら、私達が目指すべきことは、「その時、イエス様（Christ）なら何を言われるのか、どうするのか」ということを尋ね求める、そのことに尽きるのではないでしょうか。
聖書はそのイエス・キリストが何を言われ、何をされたかを記録しているのです。このイエスに教えられ、自らの生き方をそこに合わせる。このようにして、私達は今、直面している事柄に向き合っていくのです・・・。このことを可能にしてくださるお方が聖霊様なのです。

聖霊を信ず：教えられやすい人になりたい

先々週は使徒信条から一米牧師は「生ける者と死にたる者とを裁きたまわん」ということについてお話しくださいました。今日はそれに続く短い一言、「我は聖霊を信ず」という言葉に注目したいと思います。
使徒信条はキリストが「死にて葬られ、陰府（よみ）にくだり、三日目に死人のうちよりよみがえり、天に昇り、全能の父なる神の右に座したまえり」と記しています。そう、イエス・キリストは今、全能の父なる神の右に座しておられます。そして、そのところで私達のためにとりなしの祈りをしていてくださるということを一米先生は一月前に、お話くださいました。
そのことは私達にとって大きな慰めであり、励ましであります。しかし、同時にそのことは、イエス様が私達の前から見えるかたちでいなくなるということを意味します。今から２０００年前、イエス様と共に三年半もの間、活動を共にしてきたイエス様の弟子達はどんなにか心細く感じたかと思います。しかし、イエス様は彼らを見放すのではなく、さらに彼らのはたらきが力強く前進することができるように、ある事柄について弟子達に話して聞かせたのです。時は最後の晩餐、その名の通り、十字架にかけられる数時間前、イエス様と弟子達の最後の食事です。The time is the Last Supper.
ヨハネ１４：１６－１７「わたしは父にお願いしよう。そうすれば、父は別に助け主を送って、いつまでもあなたがたと共におらせて下さるであろう。それは、真理の御霊である。この世はそれを見ようともせず、知ろうともしないので、それを受けることができない」
ヨハネ１５：２６「わたしが父のみもとからあなたがたにつかわそうとしている助け主、すなわち、父のみもとから来る真理の御霊が下る時、それは私についてあかしをするであろう」
ヨハネ１６：７－８「しかし、わたしは本当のことをあなたがたに言うが、わたしが去って行くことは、あなたがたの益になるのだ。わたしが去って行かなければ、あなたがたのところに助け主はこないであろう。もしいけば、それをあなたがたにつかわそう。それが来たら、罪と義と裁きについて、世の人の目を開くであろう」
ヨハネ１６：１３－１５「けれども真理の御霊が来る時には、あなたがたをあらゆる真理に導いてくれるであろう。それは自分から語るのではなく、その聞くところを語り、きたるべき事をあなたがたに知らせるであろう。御霊は私に栄光を得させるであろう。わたしのものを受けて、それをあなたがたに知らせるからである」
最後の晩餐において、イエス様は四度も繰り返して、あることについて彼らに話したのです。私は時々、子供達に何度も同じことを言うことがあるそうです。子供たちは言います。「あぁ、もう１０回、聞いた」当の本人の私は、一度とは言わないけど２、３回だけだと思っています。しかし、彼らは１０回と言います。おそらく彼らの方が正しいのでしょう。
そのほとんどは、どうでもいい話ですが、同時に私にとって何度でも伝えておきたいと思うことも含まれます。もし私が今晩の食卓で同じことを４回、言いましたら、子供達は耐えきれなくなっていうことでしょう。「四度目！もう分かっているよ！」
イエス様は十字架にかかる直前、最後の晩餐の席で、同じことを四回、言われました。このことは何を意味するのでしょうか。数週間前にイエス様は「ご自身が再び、この世界に来る」という言葉に命をかけたとお話ししました。同じように、イエス様が何度も言われたことは最重要なことだったのです。その言葉を文章にするのなら、それは太字にして、ハイライトをつけるような言葉だったということです。イエス様は何を言われたのでしょうか。
その時にイエス様が繰り返し言われたことは「私は去るが、助け主、真理の御霊が来る」と言いました。それはすなわち、「聖霊があなたたちのもとに来るだろう」ということだったのです。それから２０００年を経て、今を生きる私達はイエス様が大切なこととした、この聖霊をどれだけ心に留めているでしょうか。
この聖霊というお方は具体的にどのようなはたらきをなさるお方なのでしょうか。このことを知る時に、なぜイエス様が聖霊について何度も語られたのかが分かります。今日は聖書が記している、この聖霊のはたらきについて、五つのことを皆さんとみていきたいと思います。一つ目のこと、それは「聖霊は私達を導く」ということです。
イエス様が弟子達と共におられた時、イエス様はその先頭に立ち、常に彼らを導かれました。ある時はガリラヤ湖を前に、彼らに向かって言われました、「向こう岸にわたろう」。
私達は思うかもしれません。今もイエス様が目に見えるかたちで私達の前を歩いてくださり、私達を導いてくれたらと。しかし、今、私達は目に見えるイエス様から、ダイレクトに指示を受けることはありません。その代わりに今、この時、聖霊が私たちを導くのだと聖書は言うのです。使徒行伝１６章６節，７節にはこのような言葉が記されています。
使徒行伝１６章６節，７節「それから彼らはアジアで御言葉を語ることを聖霊に禁じられたので、フルギヤ・ガラテヤ地方をとおって行った。そして、ムシヤのあたりにきてから、ビテニヤに進んで行こうとしたところ、イエスの御霊がこれを許さなかった」
私達がどこに向かって歩んでいるのかということは時に、私達にとって生死を分けるような問題となることがあります。この使徒行伝１６章はパウロとその一行が旅を進めるにあたり、聖霊によってアジアやビテニヤに行くことを禁じられた、許さなかったと記録しています。
皆さんはこのようなことを体験したことがないでしょうか。これから右か左かどちらに行くべきか。そのようなことを祈り、思い巡らしている時に「こちらに行くべきだ」、あるいは「そちらには行くべきではない」という内なる迫りを感じたというようなことがないでしょうか。「自分はこっちに行きたい」と願い、それが最善と思っているのに、そちらに行こうとすることに対して平安がないために、その自分の思いを断念する。そうしましたら、後に考えもしなかったことが起きて、自分の思いに従わなかったことに感謝したというようなことがありませんか。聖霊は私達のために私達が歩むべき道を示してくださるお方です。
二つ目のこと、それは「聖霊は人格をもつ」ということです。使徒行伝１５章２８節にこうあります。
使徒行伝１５章２８節「すなわち聖霊とわたしたちとは、次の必要事項のほかは、どんな負担をも、あなたがたに負わせないことに決めた」
この言葉は聖霊というお方が人格をもつお方として、私達の相談相手となってくださり、そのことによって決断に導かれたかのように記されています。その決断は「わたしたちと聖霊」とによって決められたのだというのです。私達の決断、デシジョン・メイキングの場に聖霊様にも列席していただき、その御声に私達が耳を向けるということです。
いかがでしょうか、私達があの決断、この決断をする時、そのテーブルに聖霊様はいらっしゃるでしょうか。その語りかけを聞いているでしょうか。
エペソ４章３０節には「神の聖霊を悲しませてはいけない」と書かれています。聖霊は掴みどころのないボンヤリとしたものではなくて、聖霊は悲しむというのです。イエス様は神の子としてこの地に生きましたが、わたしたちと同じような感情をもっておられました。同じように聖霊も私達の言動によって悲しむし、また、悲しむのなら、このお方は喜びもすることでしょう。
公の場で、誰も見ていない場所において、はたして聖霊は私達を見て悲しんでいるのでしょうか、喜んでいるのでしょうか。私達の心からの願いは聖霊が喜ばれる生き方をすることです。言うまでもなく、聖霊を悲しませず、聖霊が喜んでくださる生き方こそが、あなた、わたしにとりまして最高の生き方なのです。三つ目のこと、それは「聖霊はとりなしてくださる」ということです。
ローマ８章２６節‐２７節「御霊もまた同じように、弱い私達を助けてくださる。なぜなら、わたしたちはどう祈ったらよいか分からないが、御霊みずから言葉にあらわせない切なるうめきをもって、わたしたちのために取り成してくださるからである。そして、人の心を探り知る方は、御霊の思うところがなんであるかを知っておられる。なぜなら、御霊は聖徒のために神の御旨にかなうとりなしをして下さるからである」。
イエス様は今、神の右の御座で私達のために、とりなしていてくださると聖書は記しています。このローマ８章の言葉は、私達のためにとりなしてくださるお方は、神の右に座するイエス・キリストだけではないというのです。聖霊も「言葉にあらわせない切なるうめきをもって、わたしたちのために取り成してくださる」というのです。
私達が神に祈る時、「どうしたらいいのだろうか」、「どう祈ったらいいのだろうか」という思いにとらわれてしまうことがあります。私達にはどうしたらいいのか分からないのです。しかし、その時に聖霊様は私達のそんな思いを受け止め、神様と私達の間にあって、神の御旨にかなった取りなしをしてくださっているというのです。
主にある皆さん、私達の祈りに対して、このような聖霊様のとりなしがあるということを知りましょう。その聖霊の取りなしを経て、私達の祈りに対して、神様が応答してくださっているのだと、信頼する者はさいわいです。四つ目のこと、それは「聖霊は私達を教える」ということです。
ヨハネ１４章２６節「しかし、助け主、すなわち、父がわたしの名によってつかわされる聖霊は、あなたがたにすべてのことを教え、またわたしが話しておいたことを、ことごとく思い起こさせるであろう。」
ここに記されているように聖霊は私達に全てのことを教えるというのです。「全てのこと」とは文字通り、全てであります。生きること、そして死ぬこと、その間にある私達の人生、全ての事柄を教えるということです。さらに、私達が今、見ているもの、聞いているものに対して聖霊は、かつてイエス様が言われた言葉を思い起こさせてくださるというのです。
「ああ、イエス様はこのことを言われていたのだな」、「こんな時、イエス様はあんなことを言っていたな」と気がつかせてくださるということです。このことは、聖霊はイエス様が言われたこと、すなわち聖書が言っていることを私達に思い起こさせてくださるということです。そして、このことは私達が主の言葉を思い起こすためには、予め主の言葉を知っていなければならないということを意味します。聞いたことのないこと、知らないことを思い起こすことは私達にはできないからです。
ですから、皆さん、私達は聖書を読み、聖書を学び、主の御言葉を心に蓄えておかなければなりません。それはあなたの心の棚に主の言葉を一つでも多く、蓄えるようなものです。老後の諸々の蓄えは必要なことでしょう。しかし、その老後に希望と喜びと感謝をもって暮らしたいのなら、私達は今から、主の言葉を心に蓄えるべきです。
その棚に多くの御言葉が貯蓄されているのなら、私達がこの人生に向き合っていく事柄に対して、いつでも必要な御言葉を取り出して、それに従い生きることができるでしょう。このことが、どれだけ私達の人生にとって大きな祝福であるか、私はそのことを言葉では言い尽くすことができません。
私達が人生の最後の教育を終え、学校を卒業します。その時、以来、私達は人生の難問に向き合ってきました。世の無常、結婚問題、子育ての問題、ファイナンス、人間関係、想定外の病気、災難、などなど・・・。その時に大学卒業のディプロマは全くとは言いませんが、ほとんど役に立ちません。
三浦綾子さんが著書に書いています。目を見張るような学歴をもち、仕事でも多くの実績をもった女性が結婚します。やがて子供が生まれ、夫婦で話し合い、彼女は仕事をやめて育児に専念したというのです。
それまでは学校の成績もよく、テキパキと目の前にある課題をこなしていた彼女は目の前にいる我が子を前に、なんと自分は無力なのかと思わされたというのです。わが子でありながら、子育てが自分の思い描いたようにいかない。幾冊も育児書を読むけれど、書かれているような理想にはほど遠い。
その時、学校の卒業証書、かつて社内で表彰された実績はほとんど意味をなしません。しかしながら、実際のところ私たちが生きるということは、このような問題ばかりに取り囲まれており、死ぬまでこの類の問題に私達は向き合います。このような私達の生活の中で聖霊様は私達に、どうあるべきかを教えてくださるというのです。

このことがどれだけ私達を守り、このことゆえにどれだけ多くの祝福を神様からいただくことができるのか、それは私達の経験とか努力をはるかに超えたものなのです。最後の五つ目のこと、それは「真理を見分ける聖霊」ということです。
第一コリント２章１０節、１１節 そして、それを神は、御霊によってわたしたちに啓示して下さったのである。御霊はすべてのものをきわめ、神の深みまでもきわめるのだからである。いったい、人間の思いは、その内にある人間の霊以外に、誰が知っていようか。それと同じように神の思いも、神の御霊以外には知るものはない。
私達が日々の生活をしていく時に、どれだけ一つ一つの事象の背後にあるものを見極めることができるか、どれだけ、その深さを知ることができるかということはとても大切なことです。どこに真理があるのか、どこに善悪の一線があるのか、このことを見極めることができないと大変なことになります。
私たちの生きる世界はコンクリート・ジャングルと呼んでもいいのかもしれません。隙あらば、私達を誘惑し、私達の全てを奪おうとする者達はいくらでもいます。ですから、私達は聖霊を必要とするのです。その時に聖霊は何が正しいことなのか、私達が選ぶべき道なのかを私達に示してくださる。
冷蔵庫にある何かを食べた時、おやっと思うことがあります。これはちょっと古いのではないか。その匂いをかぎ、ちょっと舐めてみる。その時に「やめよう」と思う。そのように聖霊も私達に信号を送ってくれます。ここから先に深入りするな。その人から離れなさい。そちらに向かうな。それを選ぶな。
私達の子供達や孫たちが、この世界で悪の囁きに耳を隠さず歩み続けることは至難の業です。子供達を教会に連れてきましょう。「いや、まだ小さくて何も分からないですから」とあなたは思うかもしれない。
かつて集会や礼拝に子供を連れてきていた母親達に、牧師であった母が言っていたことを今も私は覚えています。「子供は大人達が話していることが分からないかもしれません。でもこの子を主の霊的な空気の中におき続けましょう。そのことにより、彼らの心には、善と悪を感じとるセンサーが作られていきます」
やがていつかその子が成長した時、その子は自分が育った空気とは異なる空気を吸った時に、その違和感を察知するようになるのです。この世の空気だけを吸っていて、どうして、そこに違和感を感じることができるでしょうか。しかし、主の霊の中に身を起き続けているのなら、私達はその霊的な感覚をいただくことができます。
やがて彼らは親元を離れていきます。自分が何をして、どこに行くかということは全て彼らの意思決定に任される日がくるのです。その時に彼らが親と共に来ていた教会で、聖霊のはたらきの中に身を置いて育っていくのであるならば、彼らは「ああ、ここは自分がいるべき場所ではない」「この話は何かおかしい、関わるべきではない」ということを察知するようになるのです。このことを経ずして彼らを世に送り出すことがどんなに危険なことなのか私達はどれだけ理解しているでしょうか。
私がまだ５、６歳の頃、母は日本の小さな田舎町の教会で牧会をしていました。寒い地域で冬になると石油ストーブがたかれ、その上にはヤカンが置かれました。夜の祈祷会はいつも母と一人のおばあちゃんだけでした。当時、小学生だった私も時々、そこに加わりました。
石油ストーブを真ん中に三人で賛美を歌います。ストーブの上に置かれたヤカンからは水蒸気が出ています。いつも、すぐに私は眠くなり、彼女たちの傍で座布団を畳の上に敷き、そこで眠りました。その祈祷会で話されたことは何も覚えていません。
しかし、祈りと御言葉と賛美の中に身を置いていたということには大きな意味がありました。その後、もし私が何かから守られたということがあったとしたら、それは母が私をそこに置いていてくれたからだと信じています。
もしかしたら子供達が一時、教会を離れてしまうということがあるかもしれません。しかし、彼らが教会で受けた霊的な空気を知っているのなら、彼らは将来、それを思い起こし教会に帰ってくることでしょう。何を隠そう、私もその一人なのです。
今日はここまで聖霊のご性質とその働きについてお話ししてきました。みなさんは、あることに気がついているのではないかと思います。そうです、聖霊はあたかも私達の目の前にいつもいてくださるイエス様のように私達のすぐ身近にいつもいてくださるということを！
今日、この礼拝が終わりましたら、私は来週の日曜日までほとんどの方達とお会いすることがありません。この一週間、私の念力が皆さんと共にあるということは絶対にありません。私は鼻から息する、過ち多き人間にすぎません。
しかし、聖霊は２４/７、皆さんと共にあります。私達が眠っている時も、聖霊は私達と共におります。一人さみしく涙を流す夜があるかもしれない。しかし、覚えてください、聖霊はあなたと共にいます。私達が好ましくない状況に立つ時、聖霊は「今、そこから立ち去りなさい」と語りかけてくれます。「どうしたらいいのだろう」と思い悩む時、聖霊は聖書に記されているイエス様の生き様を私達に思い起こさせてくれます。表面的なことだけに自分の人生を委ねるのではなく、さらに深い世界があることを聖霊は私達に教えてくれます。
主にある兄弟姉妹、どれもこれも私達が喉から手が出るほどに欲しいものではないでしょうか。どれもこれも、「これらさえあれば、自分は生きていける」というようなものではないですか。
主にある皆さん、イエス様が何度もこの聖霊について語られたことの意味が、今日、お分かりになったと信じます。私達の一度の人生、それを最高に生きることができる、その方法を知っているのは、あなたでもなく私でもありません。そのことを知っているイエス様は繰り返し私達に、今も語りかけているのです。
聖霊と共に生きよ！
イエス・キリストが何度も勧めた、この約束の言葉を私達は心の奥底に、しかとおさめようではありませんか。お祈りしましょう。
Believe in the Holy Spirit: Wanting to Be a Teachable Person

Two Sundays ago, Pastor Ichibei spoke from the Apostles’ Creed about Jesus coming again “to judge the living and the dead”. Today I would like to focus on the short phrase that follows, “I believe in the Holy Spirit”.
The Apostles’ Creed states that Christ was “dead, and was buried; He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again; He ascended into heaven, He is seated at the right hand of the Father”. Yes, Jesus Christ is now, seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. And, last month, Pastor Ichibei talked about Jesus interceding for us in that place.
That is a great comfort and encouragement to us. But at the same time, this means that Jesus is no longer visible to us. I think of how discouraged the disciples of Jesus who had worked alongside of Him for three and half years must have felt, 2000 years ago. However, Jesus did not forsake them, but rather told them about certain things so that their work could go forward with more strength. The time is the Last Supper. As the name implies, it is the last meal of Jesus and His disciples a few hours before His crucifixion.
John 14:16-17. 16 “And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him.”
John 15:26 “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father—the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—He will testify about Me.”
John 16:7-8. 7 “But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you. 8 When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment:”
John 16:13-1 13 “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on His own; He will speak only what He hears, and He will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify Me because it is from Me that He will receive what He will make known to you.”
At the Last Supper, Jesus spoke to them about a certain matter, repeating it four times. My children say that I sometimes tell them the same thing over and over again. They say, “Oh, I’ve heard that ten times already.” I, the person in question, wouldn’t say just once, but think it was just two or three times. But they say 10 times. They are probably right.
Most of these stories are unimportant, but at the same time they include things that I would like to tell them again and again. If I said the same thing four times at the dinner table this evening, my children would lose their patience and say: “It’s the fourth time! I already know!”
Jesus said the same thing four times at the Last Supper, just before He went to the cross. A few weeks ago I told you that Jesus put His life on the line when He said that He Himself would come again to this world. Likewise, what Jesus said repeatedly was of paramount importance. If you were to put those words in writing, that means they were words that you would make bold and highlight. What did Jesus say?
At that time, Jesus repeatedly said, “I will go away, but the Helper, the Spirit of truth, will come.” That is, “the Holy Spirit will come to you”. Two thousand years later, how much do we who live today keep in mind this Holy Spirit that Jesus made important?
What exactly does the Holy Spirit do? When you know this, you will understand why Jesus spoke so many times about the Holy Spirit. Today, I would like to share with you five things the Bible says about the work of the Holy Spirit. The first thing is that “the Holy Spirit guides us”.
When Jesus was with His disciples, He was their leader and always guided them. At one time, facing the Sea of Galilee, He said to them, “Let us go over to the other side.”
We might think. I wish Jesus were still walking before us in visible form, guiding us. But now we do not receive direct instructions from the visible Jesus. Instead, the Bible says, the Holy Spirit leads us now, at this time. The following words are recorded in Acts 16:6, 7.
Acts 16:6, 7 6 Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia. 7 When they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not allow them to.
Where we are headed can sometimes be a matter of life or death for us. Here in Acts 16 it is recorded that as Paul and his traveling companions proceeded on their journey, the Holy Spirit forbade them, did not allow them to go to Asia and Bithynia.
Have you ever experienced something like this? Should I go to the right or to the left now? Have you ever felt an inner urgency to “go this way,” or to “not go that way,” while praying and contemplating such things? You desire to go a certain way, thinking it is the best way, but because you have no peace in going that way, you give up on that thought. Then, something happened later that you hadn’t thought of, and you were thankful that you didn’t follow your own thoughts. Have you experienced anything like that? The Holy Spirit is the One who shows us the path we should take.
The second thing is that “the Holy Spirit has personality”. In Acts 15:28 it says:
Acts 15:28 It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us not to burden you with anything beyond the following requirements:
These words are written as if the Holy Spirit, as a person with personality, became our counselor and guided us to a decision. The decision was made by “us and the Holy Spirit”. It means to have the Holy Spirit be present at the decision-making table, and that we will listen to His voice.
How about this? When we make that decision or this decision, is the Holy Spirit at the table? Are we listening to what He says?
In Ephesians 4:30 it says, “do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God”.
It says that the Holy Spirit is not an elusive vague thing, but that the Holy Spirit grieves. Jesus lived on this earth as the Son of God, but He had the same feelings as we do. In the same way, the Holy Spirit is grieved by what we say and do, and if He grieves, He also rejoices.
In public, where no one is watching, is the Holy Spirit grieved or joyous in seeing us? Our sincere desire is to live in a way that pleases the Holy Spirit. Needless to say, the way of life that does not grieve the Holy Spirit and in which He is pleased with is the best way for you and me to live. The third thing is that “the Holy Spirit intercedes”.
Romans 8:26-27 26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.
The Bible says that Jesus is now interceding for us at the right hand of God. These words of Romans 8 say that the One who intercedes for us is not only Jesus Christ, who sits at the right hand of God. The Holy Spirit also “intercedes for us through wordless groans”.
When we pray to God, we sometimes get caught up in the thought, “What should I do?” or “How should I pray?” But then the Holy Spirit takes a hold of our thoughts, and intercedes for us according to God’s will.
People in the Lord, let us know that there is such an intercession of the Holy Spirit in regard to our prayers. Blessed are those who trust that God is responding to our prayers through the intercession of the Holy Spirit. The fourth thing is that “the Holy Spirit teaches us”.
John 14:26 “But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”
As it is written here, the Holy Spirit will teach us all things. The term “all things” literally means everything. It means teaching about living and dying, and all things in our lives in between.
Furthermore, it says that the Holy Spirit will remind us of everything Jesus has said in relation to what we are now seeing and hearing.
It means that He will make us realize, “Oh, Jesus was saying this,” or “Jesus was saying that at such a time”. This means that the Holy Spirit will remind us of what Jesus said, that is what the Bible says. And this means that we must know His word beforehand in order to recall it. For we cannot recall what we have not heard or do not know.
Therefore, people, we must read the Bible, study the Bible, and store the Word of the Lord in our hearts. It is like storing as many of His words on the shelves of your heart as you can. It may be necessary to save various things for our later years. But if we want to live with hope, joy, and gratitude in our old age, we should store the Lord’s words in our hearts from now on.
If we have a large store of the Word on our shelves, we will always be able to take out the Word we need and live according to it as we face the things of this life. I cannot begin to tell you how much of a blessing this is to our lives.
We finish our education at the end of our lives and graduate from school. Ever since that time, we have faced life’s conundrums. The impermanence of the world, marriage problems, parenting issues, finance, relationships, unexpected illnesses, disasters, etc. . . . At that time, a university diploma is of little, if of any use at all.
Ayako Miura writes in her book. A woman with spectacular academic credentials and many professional accomplishments gets married. Eventually a child is born, and the couple discuss the matter, and she quits her job to focus on raising the child.
Until then, she had done well in school and completed the tasks set before her quickly and efficiently, but now she feels helpless in front of her own child. It is my child, but parenting is not going the way I envisioned. I have read many parenting books, but the ideal written is far from reality.
In such moments, school diplomas and former company awards mean little. However, the fact of the matter is that we are surrounded by all these problems in our lives, and we will face them until the day we die. In our lives such as this, the Holy Spirit teaches us how we should be.
I was once present at an interview for a pastor who was going to join our denomination. At that time, a retired pastor asked the young pastor, who had just graduated from the seminary, one question. “Are you teachable? ”He replied, “Yes”. The pastor smiled and said, “Then you will be all right”. The pastor who was interviewed at that time is now doing very good pastoral ministry.
It goes without saying. Being teachable is not just for the young, but no matter how old we get, the benefits that “teachable people” receive are blessings that are irreplaceable. It is no exaggeration to say that God’s grace and blessings flow to those who are teachable, just as water flows to the lowest places, and they are poured out in abundance. This is our ideal life, a life in which we can say, “Ah, this is what Jesus said at that time, and this is what He meant,” to live our lives directly taught by the Lord The best way to live as a Christian is to get as close as possible to “what would Jesus do?”
In today’s world, there are many things that would not have been debated 30 years ago. Some of them could split churches and even denominations. Through the Internet, countless principles and positions are circulating around the world. However, if we call ourselves Christ-ian, our goal should be to ask, “What would Jesus (Christ) say or do in that moment?”
The Bible records what Jesus Christ said and did. We are taught by this Jesus, and adjust our own way of life to what He taught. In this way, we will address what we are facing now. The One who makes this possible is the Holy Spirit. How much this protects us and how many blessings we can receive from God because of this are far beyond our experience and efforts. The fifth and final thing, is “the Holy Spirit discerns truth”.
1 Corinthians 2:10, 11 10 these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11 For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God.
As we go about our daily lives, how much we are able to discern what is behind each event, how much we are able to know the depth of what is going on is very important. If we cannot discern where the truth is and where the line between right and wrong lies, it will become a big problem. The world we live in may be called a concrete jungle. There are plenty of people who will try to seduce us and take everything from us at every opportunity. That is why we need the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will then show us what is the right thing to do and the path we should choose.
When you eat something in the fridge, you may think, oh no! This must be a little old. You smell it and lick it a little. That’s when you think, “I better not”. In like manner, the Holy Spirit also sends us signals. Don’t go deeper than here. Stay away from that person. Don’t turn towards that. Don’t choose that.
It is extremely difficult for our children and grandchildren to walk through this world without covering their ears from the whispers of evil. Let us bring our children to church. You may think, “No, they are still too small to understand anything yet”.
I still remember what my mother, who was a pastor, used to say to mothers who used to bring their children to meetings and services. “The child may not understand what the adults are talking about. But keep this child in the spiritual atmosphere (air) of the Lord. By doing so, a sensor of good and evil will be created in their hearts.”
Eventually, someday when that child grows up, he or she will perceive the discomfort when he or she breathes air that is different from the air he or she grew up with. How can one breathe only the air of this world and feel any sense of discomfort there? But we can receive that spiritual sense, if we keep ourselves in the Spirit of the Lord.
Eventually they will leave their parents. The day will come when they will be left to make all the decisions about what they do and where they go. If they grow up in the church where they came with their parents at that time, placing themselves in the workings of the Holy Spirit, they will perceive that “Oh, this is not where I should be,” or “There is something wrong with this story, I should not get involved”.
How much do we understand how dangerous it is to send them out into the world without going through this process?
When I was only five or six years old, my mother was pastoring a church in a small rural town in Japan. In the cold region, a kerosene stove was heated in winter, and a kettle was placed on top of it. The evening prayer meeting was always just my mother and one elderly woman. I was an elementary school student at the time, and I joined them from time to time.
Three people sing praises with a kerosene stove in the middle. Steam is coming from the kettle on the stove. Invariably, I soon became sleepy, spread the cushions on the tatami mats beside them, and slept there. I don’t remember anything that was spoken at that prayer meeting.
However, it meant a lot to me that I was in the midst of prayer, God’s Word, and praise. After that, if I was ever protected from anything, I believe it was because my mother kept me there.
Perhaps the children will go away from the church for a time. But if they know the spiritual atmosphere they received in the church, they will remember it and return to the church in the future. What do I have to hide? I am one of them.
So far today I have talked about the nature of the Holy Spirit and His work. I am sure you have all noticed something. Yes, that the Holy Spirit is always close to us, as if He were Jesus, who is always right in front of us!
After this worship service today, I will not see most of you until next Sunday. There is absolutely no way that my will-power will be with you all during this week.I am nothing more than a fallible human being who breathes through his nose.
But the Holy Spirit is with you 24/7. Even when we are asleep, the Holy Spirit is with us. There may be nights when you are alone and weep. But remember, the Holy Spirit is with you. When we stand in an unfavorable situation, the Holy Spirit tells us to “walk away from there, now”. When we wonder, “What should I do?”, the Holy Spirit reminds us of Jesus’ life as described in the Bible. The Holy Spirit teaches us that there is a deeper world, that we should not just surrender our lives to superficial things.
Brothers and sisters in the Lord, all of these things are what we truly want. Are not all of these things, “If I only have these things, I can live” kind of things?
People in the Lord, I believe that today you understand the meaning of what Jesus said many times about this Holy Spirit. It is not you or me who knows how to live our one life and live it the best we can. Knowing this, Jesus repeatedly tells us, even now.
Live with the Holy Spirit!
Let us hold deep in our hearts the words of this promise, which Jesus Christ has repeatedly exhorted us with. Let us pray.
