では、罪とは何でしょうか、赦しとは何でしょうか。赦しはどのように可能で、なぜ重要なのでしょうか？これらは、聖書が私たちに答えを与えてくれる質問であり、これらの問いに答えることで、私達は罪の赦しに対する信仰を宣言することができるのです（本多）。

The Joy and Peace that Comes from Being Forgiven
赦されることから生まれる喜びと平安

I have been a Christian now for 45 years. 私はクリスチャンになって４５年になります。
I placed my faith in Jesus Christ as my Savior in 1979, at a JEMS Mount Hermon Conference as a middle schooler. １９７９年、中学生だった私は、JEMSマウントハーモン大会でイエス・キリストを救い主として信じました。
The Bible verse that spoke to me then and that I still hold dearly today is 1 John 1:9. その時、私に語りかけ、今でも大切にしている聖書の箇所は、ヨハネの手紙第一１章９節です。
1 John 1:9（第一ヨハネ１章９節）
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. もし、わたしたちが自分の罪を告白するならば、神は真実で正しいかたであるから、その罪をゆるし、すべての不義からわたしたちをきよめて下さる。
Standing before you now, as a sinner forgiven of his sins by God, I can truly say that I am saved and I can live each day with joy and peace because of being forgiven by God. 今、皆さんの前に立って、神によって罪を赦された罪人として、私は神に赦されたおかげで救われ、喜びと平安に満ちた毎日を送ることができると心から言えます。
There has not been a day that I have lived upon this earth in which I have not sinned. この地上で生きてきて、罪を犯さなかった日は一日もありません。
And there has not been a day since I have become a Christian that I have not confessed my sins to God. そしてクリスチャンになって以来、神に罪を告白しなかった日は一日もありません。
And furthermore, there has not been a day that I have not been “saved” by the reality of God’s forgiveness of my sins and His cleansing in my life. そしてさらに、神が私の罪を赦し、私の人生をきよめてくださったという現実によって、私が「救われなかった」日は一日もありませんでした。
In fact, without this assurance of the forgiveness of my sins, I would not have been able to continue to be a part of this church family nor serve as a pastor until this day. 実際、この罪の赦しの保証がなければ、私は今日までこの教会家族の一員であり続けることも、牧師として仕えることもできなかったでしょう。
There have been times that due to my sinfulness, I have hurt members of this church family. 私の罪深さゆえに、この教会家族のメンバーを傷つけてしまったこともありました。
Having spent the vast majority of my Christian life enjoying the “communion of the saints” as a part of this church family, 私のクリスチャン人生の大半をこの教会家族の一員として「聖徒の交わり」を楽しんで過ごしてきた私は、
I am truly grateful for your love and support and patience and forgiveness all of these years. この年月の間の皆さんのご愛と支え、忍耐と赦しに心から感謝しています。
There have also been times when I have hurt my dear co-laborers in Christ due to my sinfulness. また、私の罪深さのために、キリストにある親愛なる同労者たちを傷つけてしまったこともありました。
One brother that I have hurt and has left serving at this church is Pastor Noboru Yamaguchi. 私が傷つけてしまい、この教会での奉仕を離れてしまった兄弟の一人が山口のぼる牧師です。
I am particularly pained by his departure, because we did not part on good terms. 私達は良いかたちで別れたわけではなかったため、私は彼が出て行ったことに対して特に痛みを感じています。
I was not able to secure his forgiveness, and because of that I was in great pain for a while. 彼の許しを得ることができず、そのために私はしばらくの間、大きな痛手を負いました。
It did not help that the timing was such that I was dealing with my own healing and recovery of my broken elbow at the time. ちょうどその頃、私自身が肘の骨折の治療と回復に取り組んでいたタイミングだったということも助けにはなりませんでした。
At the same time, I was dealing with the sudden decline of my father’s health. 同時に、父の容態が急変したことにも向き合わなければなりませんでした。
It was in the midst of these things, that we severed ties, and Pastor Yamaguchi was officially released of his responsibilities as our youth worker in September 2020. そのような中で、私達は関係を断ち、山口牧師は２０２０年９月にユースワーカーの職を正式に解かれました。
Without God’s forgiveness and without the forgiveness and kind support and understanding of the church leadership through all of that, 神様の赦しがなければ、そしてそのような中で教会の指導者の方々の赦しと優しい支えと理解がなければ、
I would not have been able to continue to serve as a pastor at this church. 私はこの教会で牧師を続けることはできなかったでしょう。
I still pray for Pastor Yamaguchi, and pray for a day that he will be able to forgive me and we can be reconciled. 私は今でも山口牧師のために祈り、彼が私を許し、和解できる日が来ることを祈っています。
However, I am filled with joy and peace in knowing that we believe in the same Savior Jesus Christ who has brought about the forgiveness of our sins. しかし、私達の罪の赦しをもたらしてくださった同じ救い主イエス・キリストを信じていることを知り、喜びと平安に満たされています。
As part of the Apostles’ Creed, we declare: “I believe in the forgiveness of sins”.使徒信条の一部として、私たちは宣言します：「私は罪の赦しを信ず」。
In other words, we believe that God forgives us of our sins. 言い換えれば、神が私達の罪を赦してくださることを信じるということだ。
I don’t know about you, but this gives me so much joy and peace. 皆さんのことは分かりませんが、このことは私に大きな喜びと平安を与えてくれます。
If you know the pain and suffering that comes from being a sinner and recognize the depth of responsibility and costliness for the wrongs you have done, もしあなたが罪人であることから来る痛みや苦しみを知っていて、自分が犯した過ちに対する責任の深さと代償を認識しているのなら、
then you should know the joy and peace that I am talking about. 私がお話ししている喜びと平安を知るべきです。
If you know the relief and comfort that comes from experiencing God’s forgiveness, then you know the joy and peace that I am talking about. もしあなたが、神の赦しを経験することから得られる安堵と慰めを知っているなら、私が話している喜びと平安が分かるはずです。
Several years ago, the following headline appeared in the Grand Rapids Press: 数年前、グランドラピッズ・プレス紙に次のような見出しが掲載されました：
“Convict Tells of a Torture that Time Can’t Change.” 「時が変えることのできない拷問を語る囚人」。
The article described a newspaper reporter’s interview with a man who had been convicted of killing his wife. その記事は、ある新聞記者が妻殺しの罪で有罪判決を受けた男性にインタビューしたときのことを書いたものでした。
Here’s how the writer described the scene: 記者はその場面をこう描写しています：
“He leans forward from his chair. For a moment he says nothing. Finally, he comments, matter-of-factly, 「彼は椅子から身を乗り出した。しばらくの間、彼は何も言わなかったが、最後に彼は淡々と言った、
‘I’ll never be the same. I have no illusions about that. I still have to live with it.’” 私 はもう元には戻れない。そのことに幻想は抱いていない。それでも生きていかなければならない』」。
Since he was being considered for parole, the prisoner was asked by the reporter if he deserved to be let out. 仮釈放が検討されていたため、この受刑者は記者から「出所して当然か」と尋ねられました。
He responded by saying, 彼はこう答えました、
“Out? I lost a wife, and I can’t replace her. 「出所？妻を亡くし、彼女の代わりはいない。
It’ll always be on my mind, because no matter what, I still bear the final responsibility. そのことはいつも私の心にある。何があろうと、最終的な責任は私が負うことに変わりはないのだ。
There’s no amount of time I could do that would change anything. いくら時間をかけても何も変わらない。
I could do 100 years or 1,000 years; how do you set a number for something like that?” 100年でも1,000年でもいい。このようなことに対して、どうしたら数字が設定されるのだろうか？
You may not feel the deep agony and torture over having sinned and therefore losing something dear to you as the man mentioned in the article experienced. あなたはこの記事で言及されている男性が経験したような、罪を犯したために大切なものを失ったことに対する深い苦悩や拷問を感じることはないかもしれません。
However, the gravity of sin and the torturing aspect of sin is something that the Son of God, Jesus Christ, has fully addressed in coming in to this world. しかし、罪の重さ、罪の苦しみの側面は、神の子イエス・キリストがこの世に来られた時に完全に対処されました。
Thus, we cannot gloss over the fact that sin is a big deal. It cannot be overlooked. したがって、罪が大きな問題であるという事実を覆い隠すことはできません。見過ごすことはできないのです。
So, what is sin and what is forgiveness? では、罪とは何でしょうか、赦しとは何でしょうか。
How is forgiveness possible and why is it important? 赦しはどのように可能で、なぜ重要なのでしょうか？
These are questions that the Bible provides for us, and in having these questions answered, we can declare our faith in the forgiveness of our sins. これらの問いに答えることで、私達は罪の赦しに対する信仰を宣言することができるのです。
The Bible makes it very clear that we have all sinned and are in need of God’s forgiveness. 聖書は、私達はみな罪を犯しており、神の赦しを必要としていることをはっきりと示しています。
Romans 3:23（ローマ３章２３節）
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, すなわち、すべての人は罪を犯したため、神の栄光を受けられなくなっており、
Isaiah 53:6（イザヤ５３章６節）
All of us like sheep have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; われわれはみな羊のように迷って、おのおの自分の道に向かって行った。主はわれわれすべての者の不義を、彼の上におかれた。
What is sin and how have we sinned? 罪とは何でしょうか、私達はどのように罪を犯してしまうのでしょうか。
In a nutshell, sin is turning away from God’s way and going against God’s will for us. 一言で言えば、罪とは神の道から離れ、私達に対する神の御心に背くことです。
So, what is God’s will for us? では、私達に対する神の御心とは何でしょうか？
It can be summed up in God’s commandments to us, and His commandments are summed up in the following way by Jesus in response to a question that was posed to Him. 神の戒めとは、私達に対する神の戒めであり、その戒めは、イエス様が投げかけた質問に対して次のように要約されています。
Matthew 22:36-40（マタイ２２章３６節－４０節）
36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And He said to him, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the great and foremost commandment. 39 The second is like it, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.” 36「先生、律法の中で、どのいましめがいちばん大切なのですか」。37イエスは言われた、「『心をつくし、精神をつくし、思いをつくして、主なるあなたの神を愛せよ』。38これがいちばん大切な、第一のいましめである。39第二もこれと同様である、『自分を愛するようにあなたの隣り人を愛せよ』。40これらの二つのいましめに、律法全体と預言者とが、かかっている」。
Notice that Jesus stated at the end here, “On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.” この二つの戒めの上に、律法全体と預言者があります。
Basically, Jesus was saying that the whole of the Old Testament writings, and therefore God’s will for us, can be summed up in those two commandments. 基本的に、イエス様は旧約聖書の記述全体、つまり私達に対する神の意志は、この２つの戒めに要約できると言っているのです。
Thus, sin can be defined as “not loving God and not loving people”. したがって、罪とは「神を愛さず、人を愛さないこと」と定義できます。
In other words, when we say and do unloving things toward God and people (who are made in the image of God), we are sinning. 言い換えれば、私達が神や（神に似せて造られた）人々に対して愛のない言動をとるとき、私達は罪を犯していることになります。
And the love that is talked about here is “God’s love,” which is unconditional love. そして、ここで語られている愛は「神の愛」であり、無条件の愛です。
This kind of love is best described in the Bible by the apostle Paul in the following manner. この種の愛について、使徒パウロが聖書の中で次のように表現しています。
1 Corinthians 13:4-7（第一コリント１３章４節－７節）
4 Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, 5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, 6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; 7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 4愛は寛容であり、愛は情深い。また、ねたむことをしない。愛は高ぶらない、誇らない、5不作法をしない、自分の利益を求めない、いらだたない、恨みをいだかない。6不義を喜ばないで真理を喜ぶ。7そして、すべてを忍び、すべてを信じ、すべてを望み、すべてを耐える。
It is the kind of love that we all fall short of having, and therefore we have sinned. 私達は皆、このような愛を持つことができず、罪を犯してしまいました。
But God has shown this love to us through the sending of His Son Jesus Christ. しかし、神様は御子イエス・キリストを私達の元に送ってくださることにより、私達にこの愛を示されました。
John 3:16（ヨハネ３章１６節）
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”「神はそのひとり子を賜わったほどに、この世を愛して下さった。それは御子を信じる者がひとりも滅びないで、永遠の命を得るためである。」
Romans 5:6-8（ローマ５章６節－８節）
6 For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 6わたしたちがまだ弱かったころ、キリストは、時いたって、不信心な者たちのために死んで下さったのである。7正しい人のために死ぬ者は、ほとんどいないであろう。善人のためには、進んで死ぬ者もあるいはいるであろう。8しかし、まだ罪人であった時、わたしたちのためにキリストが死んで下さったことによって、神はわたしたちに対する愛を示されたのである。
1 John 4:9-10（第一ヨハネ４章９節－１０節）
9 By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. 10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 9神はそのひとり子を世につかわし、彼によってわたしたちを生きるようにして下さった。それによって、わたしたちに対する神の愛が明らかにされたのである。10わたしたちが神を愛したのではなく、神がわたしたちを愛して下さって、わたしたちの罪のためにあがないの供え物として、御子をおつかわしになった。ここに愛がある。
Propitiation basically means appeasement, specifically to appease God’s just wrath toward us due to our sins committed against Him. 贖罪とは基本的になだめることを意味し、具体的には、神に対して犯した私達の罪による、神の私達に対する正当な怒りをなだめることです。
Thus, Jesus Christ, God’s Son, appeased God’s judgment of us by becoming an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 従って、神の御子イエス・キリストは、私達の罪のための贖いの生け贄となることによって、私たちに対する神の裁きをなだめでくださったのです。
And through Jesus’ unconditional and sacrificial love in which He went to the cross to die to atone for our sins, our sins are forgiven by God. そして、私達の罪を贖うために十字架にかかって死んでくださったイエス様の無条件で犠牲的な愛によって、私達の罪は神によって赦されたのです。
What does it mean to have your sins forgiven? 罪が赦されるとはどういうことでしょうか？
To forgive means to cease to feel resentment against the one who has sinned against you. 許すとは、罪を犯した人に対する恨みをやめることです。
It means to give up claim to seek a return, compensation, retaliation, from that person. それは、その人に見返りや補償、報復を求める主張を放棄することを意味します。
In its purest sense, to forgive means to pardon a person of their wrongdoing. 最も純粋な意味において、許すとは、その人の不義を許すことを意味します。
In its usage in financial terms, it means to grant relief from payment of, such as to forgive a debt. 金融用語としては、債務を免除するなど、支払いを免除することを意味します。
To be forgiven means to have been the recipient of such things. 赦されるということは、そのようなことを受けたということです。
Forgiveness is the act of forgiving, and thus when we claim that we believe in the forgiveness of sins, we are trusting in the truth that God as taken the action to forgive us. 赦しとは、赦すという行為であり、従って、私達が罪の赦しを信じると主張する時、私達は神が私達を赦すという行為をしてくださったという真実に信頼しているのです。
In response to the question of sin in our lives, many religions and cults basically turn the question back on you to have you do something about your sin. 私達の人生における罪という問いに対して、多くの宗教やカルトは基本的に、自分の罪について何かをするようにと、その問いをあなたに突き返します。
In other words, these religions and cults give you a list of so-called “dos” or tasks that you have to do in order to be “saved” or accepted. 言い換えれば、これらの宗教やカルトは、「救われる」ため、あるいは「受け入れられる」ためにしなければならない、いわゆる「すべきこと」や「課題」のリストを与えます。
On the other hand, biblical Christianity tells us that we can’t do anything about our sins. 一方、聖書的キリスト教は、私達は自分の罪について何もできないと教えています。
However, the good news is that Jesus Christ has dealt with our sins already. しかし、良い知らせは、イエス・キリストが既に私達の罪に対処してくださったということです。
He has done all that is necessary on our behalf to deal with our sins. 私達の罪を処理するために必要なことを、私達に代わって全て行ってくださったのです。
Our sins were dealt with by Jesus, when He willingly and lovingly went to the cross to die and pay for the penalty of sins which is death. 私等の罪は、イエス様が自ら進んで愛をもって十字架にかかり、罪の罰である死を贖ってくださった時に、イエスによって処理されたのです。
The Bible tells us in Romans 6:23, that “the wages of sin is death”.聖書はローマ人への手紙６章２３節で「罪の報酬は死である」と教えています。
The wages or debt that we incurred because of sin, even just one sin, is death. たとえ一つの罪であっても、私達が背負った報いや負債は死です。
Thus, Jesus, who was sinless, and rich in mercy and love, paid for our debt by laying down His own life, to bring about our forgiveness. ですから、罪がなく、憐れみと愛に富んでおられたイエス様は、私達に赦しをもたらすために、ご自分の命を捨てることによって、私たちの負債を贖ってくださったのです。
When Jesus declared, “It is finished!” while still on the cross, bloodied and about to breathe His last breath, イエス様が十字架上で血まみれになって息を引き取ろうとしている時に、「終わった！」と宣言された時、
He made known to the whole world and thus to all of us, that He fully paid off the debt for our sins.イエス様は全世界に、ひいては全ての私達に、私達の罪の負債を完全に贖われたことを知らしめたのです。
Because sin is dealt with by Christ, what we need to do is rest in Him, that is, trust in Him for the forgiveness of our sins. 罪はキリストによって処理されたのですから、私達がすべきことは、キリストに安んじること、つまり、罪の赦しのためにキリストを信頼することなのです。
In Luke 7:36-50, there is wonderful scene of a woman “who was a sinner” expressing her deep love for Jesus by standing behind Him at His feet, ルカによる福音書７章３６節から５０節には、「罪人であった」女性がイエス様の足もとでイエスの後ろに立ち、イエス様への深い愛を表現する素晴らしい場面があり、
weeping, and wetting His feet with her tears, wiping them with the hair of her head, and kissing His feet and anointing them with perfume. その女性は泣いたその涙でイエス様の足を濡らし、頭髪でその足を拭き、イエス様の足に接吻し、香油を塗りました。
This was all done in the house of a Pharisee named Simon who had invited Jesus to dine him. これはすべて、イエス様を食事に招いたシモンというパリサイ人の家で行われたことでした。
We see the reaction of Simon to what was taking place in front of him and Jesus’ response to Simon’s reaction. 私達は、目の前で起こっていることに対するシモンの反応と、シモンの反応に対するイエス様の反応をここに見ます。
Luke 7:39-50（ルカ７章３９節－５０節）
39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet He would know who and what sort of person this woman is who is touching Him, that she is a sinner.” 40 And Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” And he replied, “Say it, Teacher.” 41 “A moneylender had two debtors: one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42 When they were unable to repay, he graciously forgave them both. So which of them will love him more?” 43 Simon answered and said, “I suppose the one whom he forgave more.” And He said to him, “You have judged correctly.” 44 Turning toward the woman, He said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has wet My feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You gave Me no kiss; but she, since the time I came in, has not ceased to kiss My feet. 46 You did not anoint My head with oil, but she anointed My feet with perfume. 47 For this reason I say to you, her sins, which are many, have been forgiven, for she loved much; but he who is forgiven little, loves little.” 48 Then He said to her, “Your sins have been forgiven.” 49 Those who were reclining at the table with Him began to say to themselves, “Who is this man who even forgives sins?” 50 And He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” 39イエスを招いたパリサイ人がそれを見て、心の中で言った、「もしこの人が預言者であるなら、自分にさわっている女がだれだか、どんな女かわかるはずだ。それは罪の女なのだから」。40そこでイエスは彼にむかって言われた、「シモン、あなたに言うことがある」。彼は「先生、おっしゃってください」と言った。41イエスが言われた、「ある金貸しに金をかりた人がふたりいたが、ひとりは五百デナリ、もうひとりは五十デナリを借りていた。42ところが、返すことができなかったので、彼はふたり共ゆるしてやった。このふたりのうちで、どちらが彼を多く愛するだろうか」。43シモンが答えて言った、「多くゆるしてもらったほうだと思います」。イエスが言われた、「あなたの判断は正しい」。44それから女の方に振り向いて、シモンに言われた、「この女を見ないか。わたしがあなたの家にはいってきた時に、あなたは足を洗う水をくれなかった。ところが、この女は涙でわたしの足をぬらし、髪の毛でふいてくれた。45あなたはわたしに接吻をしてくれなかったが、彼女はわたしが家にはいった時から、わたしの足に接吻をしてやまなかった。46あなたはわたしの頭に油を塗ってくれなかったが、彼女はわたしの足に香油を塗ってくれた。47それであなたに言うが、この女は多く愛したから、その多くの罪はゆるされているのである。少しだけゆるされた者は、少しだけしか愛さない」。48そして女に、「あなたの罪はゆるされた」と言われた。49すると同席の者たちが心の中で言いはじめた、「罪をゆるすことさえするこの人は、いったい、何者だろう」。50しかし、イエスは女にむかって言われた、「あなたの信仰があなたを救ったのです。安心して行きなさい」。
How wonderful to see Jesus’ awareness of and love for both the woman and Simon. イエス様が女とシモンの両方を意識し、愛しておられるのを見るのは、なんと素晴らしいことでしょうか。
How wonderful to know that Jesus is aware of all of us and loves us equally. イエス様が全ての私達を認識し、平等に愛してくださっていることを知ることは、なんと素晴らしいことでしょう。
We are reminded here that we all have sinned and are in need of God’s forgiveness. 私達は皆、罪を犯し、神の赦しを必要としていることをここで思い起こさせられます。
At the same time, we are reminded that not all of us are aware of the depth of our own sinfulness. 同時に、私達全員が自分の罪の深さに気づいているわけではないことにも気づかされる。
Because of this, not all of us are aware of the greatness of God’s love shown to us in forgiving us of our sins. そのため、私達の罪を赦してくださる神の愛の偉大さに気づいている人ばかりではないのです。
As the woman was commended for her deep love for Jesus in expressing her gratitude for the forgiveness of her sins through faith in Him, この女性が、イエス様への信仰によって罪が赦されたことへの感謝を表すことで、イエス様への深い愛が称賛されたように、
we too are called to express our deep gratitude to Jesus for redeeming us by putting our faith in Him.私達もまた、イエス様に信仰を置くことによって、私達を贖ってくださったイエス様への深い感謝を表すよう求められているのです。
For the forgiveness of our sins was made possible by Jesus’ work of redemption and His work alone! 私達の罪の赦しは、イエス様の贖いの御業によって、そしてイエス様の御業のみによって可能となったからです！
Isaiah 53:6（イザヤ５３章６節）

And according to the Law, one may almost say, all things are cleansed with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no forgiveness. こうして、ほとんどすべての物が、律法に従い、血によってきよめられたのである。血を流すことなしには、罪のゆるしはあり得ない。
For our sins to be forgiven, the atonement for our sins was necessary, and such atonement and redemption was made through Jesus’ death and specifically the shedding of His blood. 私達の罪が赦されるためには、罪の贖いが必要であり、そのような贖いは、イエス様の死、とりわけイエス様が血を流すことによってなされたのです。
Indeed, without Jesus’ work of redeeming us, there is no amount of time or work we could do that would change anything, whether that were for a 100 years or 1,000 years. 実際、イエス様が私達を贖ってくださらなければ、１００年であろうと１０００年であろうと、私達がいくら時間をかけても、働いても、何かを変えることはできません。
But Jesus came and died on the cross once and for all! しかし、イエス様は来てくださり、十字架で死んでくださいました！
The righteous for the unrighteous! The sinless One for the sinful ones! 正しい者が正しくない者のために！ 罪ある者のために罪なきお方が！
The perfect Son of God for the imperfect sons and daughters of disobedience! 不完全な不従順の息子や娘のための完全な神の御子！
So, how are we to live in light of the fact that our sins are forgiven by God? では、私達の罪が神によって赦されているという事実を踏まえて、私達はどのように生きればいいのでしょうか？
Consider the following story told by Henry Allan “Harry” Ironside who was a pastor of the Moody Church in Chicago from 1929 to 1948. １９２９年から１９４８年までシカゴのムーディー教会の牧師であったヘンリー・アラン・「ハリー」・アイアンサイドが語った次の話を考えてみましょう。
On the Lord’s day a group of missionaries and believers in New Guinea were gathered together to observe the Lord’s Supper. 主の日、ニューギニアの宣教師と信者たちが主の晩餐を守るために集まっていました。
After one young man sat down, a missionary recognized that a sudden tremor had passed through the young man’s body that indicated he was under a great nervous strain. 一人の青年が席に着いた後、ある宣教師は、その青年の体に突然の震えが走り、彼が大きな緊張にさらされていることに気がつきました。
Then in a moment all was quiet again. すると、一瞬にしてすべてが静まり返りました。
The missionary whispered, “What was it that troubled you?” 宣教師はささやきました。「あなたの問題は何だったのですか？」
“Ah,” he said, “But the man who just came in killed and ate the body of my father.「今、入ってきた男が父を殺して、その遺体を食べたのです。

At first I didn’t know whether I could endure it. But it is all right now. 最初は耐えられるかどうか分かりませんでした。でも、もう大丈夫です。
He is washed in the same precious blood.” 彼は同じ尊い血で洗われているのですから」。
And so together they had Communion. こうして二人は共に聖餐式を行いました。
It is a marvelous thing, the work of the Holy Spirit of God. 神の聖霊の働きは驚くべきものです。
Does the world know anything of this? このことを世界は知っているでしょうか？
As we think of what we have just heard, we realize that forgiveness does not come easy. 今、聞いたことを考えると、赦すことは簡単なことではないことがわかります。
In the word “forgive” is the word “give”. 「Forgive: 赦す」という英語の中には「give:与える」という言葉が含まれています。
We need to give up something in order to forgive. 赦すためには、何かをあきらめなければなりません。
We need to give up our resentment. 恨みを捨てなければなりません。
We need to give up our claim for retaliation or what seems to us to be just punishment. 私達は、報復や正当な罰と思われるものを求める主張を放棄する必要があります。
A day will come when God will judge the world and all the wrongs will be righted. 神が世界を裁き、全ての過ちが正される日が来ます。
However, let us remember that not one of us can claim that we are without sin before God. しかし、私達の誰一人として、神の前に罪がないと主張することはできないことを忘れてはなりません。
In our minds we have notions of greater and lesser sins, and indeed the gravity of and therefore the consequences for each sin are different. 私達の頭の中には、より大きな罪、より小さな罪という観念があり、実際、それぞれの罪の重さ、したがってその結果は異なると思います。
However, we must never forget that Jesus Christ had to die on the cross for all of us, you and me, and every single person who has ever lived on the face of this earth. しかし、私達は、イエス・キリストが私達全員、あなたと私、そしてこの地上に生きているすべての人のために十字架上で死ななければならなかったことを決して忘れてはなりません。
Why? Because all of us have sinned and have fallen short of the glory of God! なぜか？ 私達全員が罪を犯し、神の栄光を受けられなかったからです！
All of us have not loved God and loved people as God has willed for us to do. 私達は皆、神様が望んでおられるように神を愛し、人々を愛してきませんでした。
Forgiveness is a costly thing. Human forgiveness is costly. 赦しとは高価なものです。 人間の赦しには犠牲が伴うのです。
Divine forgiveness is costly. God is love, but God is just. 神の赦しには犠牲が伴うのです。神は愛なるお方ですが、同時に神は義なるお方です。
Sin cannot be dismissed by saying, “It’s all right; it doesn’t matter.” 罪は「大丈夫、問題ない 」と言って退けることはできないのです。
Forgiveness is the costliest thing in the world. 赦しはこの世で最も高価なものです。
For our forgiveness cost the life of the Son of God! 私達の赦しは、神の子の命を犠牲にしたものなのですから！
And, if we have been recipients of such a wonderful and costly forgiveness, then we are in turn exhorted to forgive one another in the love of Christ. そして、もし私達がそのような素晴らしく高価な赦しを受けたのであれば、今度は私達がキリストの愛によって互いに許し合うようにと勧められているのです。
Ephesians 4:29-32（エペソ４章２９節－３２節）
29 Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear. 30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. 32 Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.
29悪い言葉をいっさい、あなたがたの口から出してはいけない。必要があれば、人の徳を高めるのに役立つような言葉を語って、聞いている者の益になるようにしなさい。30神の聖霊を悲しませてはいけない。あなたがたは、あがないの日のために、聖霊の証印を受けたのである。31すべての無慈悲、憤り、怒り、騒ぎ、そしり、また、いっさいの悪意を捨て去りなさい。32互に情深く、あわれみ深い者となり、神がキリストにあってあなたがたをゆるして下さったように、あなたがたも互にゆるし合いなさい。
We are not exhorted to forgive each other because it is easy or because we are able to do so in our own strength. 私達が許し合うように勧められているのは、それが簡単だからでも、自分の力でそうできるからでもありません。
We are exhorted to forgive each other because we have been redeemed by the blood of Christ, and have been forgiven by God ourselves. 私達が許し合うように勧められているのは、キリストの血潮によって贖われ、私達自身が神によって赦されているからなのです。
We have been forgiven and cleansed by God and have been given the Holy Spirit to live a life of love. 私達は神によって赦され、きよめられ、愛の生活を送るために聖霊を与えられているのです。
We believe in the forgiveness of sins. 私たちは罪の赦しを信じている。
Not only do we believe in the forgiveness of our sins by God, but we believe in the forgiveness of sins by one another. 私達は神による罪の赦しを信じるだけでなく、私達は互いに罪を許し合うことも信じます。
Forgiveness is a key part of the communion of the saints. 許しは聖徒の交わりにおいて重要なことなのです。
In order to have communion together as Christians, forgiveness is necessary. クリスチャンとして共に交わるためには、許しが必要です。
Our fellowship with God, that is our communion with God, is affected when we sin. 私達が罪を犯す時、神との交わり、すなわち神とのコミュニオンは影響を受けます。
Likewise, our fellowship with one another, and therefore our communion with one another as brothers and sisters in Christ is affected when we sin and also when we do not forgive one another. 同じように、私たちが罪を犯し、また互いを許さない時、私達の互いの交わり、つまりキリストにある兄弟姉妹としての互いの交わりは影響を受ける。
That is why we would do well to remember the exhortation that is given to us in 1 John 1:9. だからこそ私たちは、ヨハネの手紙第一1章9節に記されている励ましを覚えておくとよいのです。

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. もし、わたしたちが自分の罪を告白するならば、神は真実で正しいかたであるから、その罪をゆるし、すべての不義からわたしたちをきよめて下さる。
God is faithful and righteous. He has already sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to pay for the forgiveness of our sins. 神は真実で正しいお方です。 私達の罪の赦しを贖うために、御子イエス・キリストを既に遣わしてくださったのです。
Thus, out of love and gratitude to God, when we sin, we should turn to Him and confess that sin to Him. ですから、神様への愛と感謝から、罪を犯したら、神に立ち返り、その罪を神に告白すべきなのです。
We are assured that He will forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. そうすれば、神は私達の罪を赦し、全ての不義から私達をきよめてくださいます。
At the same time, we would do well to continually live in the love of God that has brought about our forgiveness and cleansing. 同時に、私達は、赦しときよめをもたらしてくださった神の愛に生き続けることがよいでしょう。
1 John 4:9-11（第一ヨハネ４章９節－１１節）
9 By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. 10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 9神はそのひとり子を世につかわし、彼によってわたしたちを生きるようにして下さった。それによって、わたしたちに対する神の愛が明らかにされたのである。10わたしたちが神を愛したのではなく、神がわたしたちを愛して下さって、わたしたちの罪のためにあがないの供え物として、御子をおつかわしになった。ここに愛がある。11愛する者たちよ。神がこのようにわたしたちを愛して下さったのであるから、わたしたちも互に愛し合うべきである。
Let us love one another by continuing to forgive one another by remembering God’s love for us shown through the sending of His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. 神のひとり子、イエス・キリストの派遣を通して示された私達への神の愛を思い起こし、互いに許し続けることによって、互いに愛し合おうではありませんか。
Let us live through Jesus Christ, in His love and His forgiveness, with the joy and peace that comes from being forgiven. イエス・キリストの愛と赦しのうちに、赦されることから来る喜びと平安をもって、イエス・キリストを通して生きましょう。
