その第一回目は聖書最初の書、創世記から人類最初の人間、アダムについてお話しします。

アダムの血を継ぐ者達

今日から「人から学び、神と共に生きる」という新しいメッセージ・シリーズが始まります。聖書には私達と同じ多くの人間の生き様が記録されています。王、兵士、祭司、奴隷、農民、占い師、漁師、学者、売春婦、夫、妻、父、息子、娘・・・・。
そこには邪悪な心があり、高貴な心があります。そこには欲心があり、無私の心があります。豊かな者がいて、貧しい者がいます。虚無があり、情熱があり、嘘偽りがあり、誠実があります。堕落があり、回心があります。
かつてこの地上に生きた、これらの人間の姿から私達は学ぶことができます。彼らがどのような過程を経て失敗したのか。そのことを知る時に、彼らは私達に大切なことを教える教師となります。彼らがどのような過程を経て、神に近く生きたのか。そのことを知る時に、私達は自分の生き方を決めることができます。
これから本多先生と交互に創世記から年代を追って、聖書の時代に生きた人たちの生き様を、その人間に関わってくださった神様のお心をお話します。そして、その第一回目が私の担当となりました。
年代を追って聖書の人物を見ていくということになれば、その最初に誰が来るか皆さんは、お分かりになると思います。そう、聖書最初の書、創世記は人類最初の人間、アダムについて記録しています。
これからお話しする全ての人間の源にある人です。彼はエデンの園において、そこにある全てのものを喜び、楽しみ、暮らすことが許されました。その時、彼は申し分のない最高の環境に置かれていました。
創世記２章７節‐９節 『7主なる神は土のちりで人を造り、命の息をその鼻に吹きいれられた。そこで人は生きた者となった。8主なる神は東のかた、エデンに一つの園を設けて、その造った人をそこに置かれた。9また主なる神は、見て美しく、食べるに良いすべての木を土からはえさせ、更に園の中央に命の木と、善悪を知る木とをはえさせられた』
神様は天地創造を終えられました時、眼下に広がるご自身の全ての創造物を見て「はなはだよかった」（創世記１章３１節）と言われました。その様はおそらく芸術家が自分の作品を作り終えて、しみじみとその作品を眺める時に感じるような思いなのでしょう。十分に納得のいく、自信作ができたというような思いだったに違いありません。
ですから、夕陽や海の青さ、動物や植物の営みに私達が感動する時、それは神様が「はなはだよかった」と呼ばれたものに対して私達が共感しているということになるのです。そんな状況の中、神様はアダムに彼の妻となるエバをお与えになりました。彼らは最高の環境の中で夫婦の生活を始めたのです。この時点で彼らに死はなく、病はなく、彼らに向かって牙をむける被造物は存在していませんでした。しかしながらこのアダムとエバに蛇が近づいてきました。この蛇は悪魔を表しています。
創世記３章１節－８節 1さて主なる神が造られた野の生き物のうちで、へびが最も狡猾であった。へびは女に言った、「園にあるどの木からも取って食べるなと、ほんとうに神が言われたのですか」。2女はへびに言った、「わたしたちは園の木の実を食べることは許されていますが、3ただ園の中央にある木の実については、これを取って食べるな、これに触れるな、死んではいけないからと、神は言われました」。4へびは女に言った、「あなたがたは決して死ぬことはないでしょう。5それを食べると、あなたがたの目が開け、神のように善悪を知る者となることを、神は知っておられるのです」。6女がその木を見ると、それは食べるに良く、目には美しく、賢くなるには好ましいと思われたから、その実を取って食べ、また共にいた夫にも与えたので、彼も食べた。7すると、ふたりの目が開け、自分たちの裸であることがわかったので、いちじくの葉をつづり合わせて、腰に巻いた。8彼らは、日の涼しい風の吹くころ、園の中に主なる神の歩まれる音を聞いた。そこで、人とその妻とは主なる神の顔を避けて、園の木の間に身を隠した。
そうです、最高の環境の中で彼らは、悪魔の囁きを聞き、禁断の実に手を伸ばし、それを食べたのです。そもそも、なぜ神様はそこに、そんなぶっそうな木を置いたのでしょうか。それがなければアダムとエバは問題を起こす必要がありませんでしたでしょう。この木には大切な意味がありました。創世記は記します。
創世記１章２７節『神は自分のかたちに人を創造された。すなわち、神のかたちに創造し、男と女とに創造された』。
「神のかたちに人は創造された」という意味は、人間だけが神と愛と信頼によって成り立つ関係を築きうるものであるということだったのです。この木がなければ、アダムとエバが自主的に、どれだけ神を愛し、信頼しているのかということを知ることはできなかったのです。それゆえに無数に生息している木々の中に一本、そうたった一本、彼らの意思が問われる木を神は生えさせたのです。
アダムとエバには、その実に手を出さない自由があり、またその実に手を出す自由もありました。愛とはその相手を信頼し、自由を与えるものだからです。その自由をどのように使うのかということにより、私達の信頼関係は育まれます。ですから神が願わないことをしないということはイコール、神様に対する彼らの愛と信頼とリスペクトを意味しました。
さらにこの木により、彼らは自分に制限を下す権威を持っている存在がいるのだということを知ることができたのです。その木によって、彼らは、自分達は造られた者であって、神なのではないということを確認することができたのです。主にある皆さん、我々がこの最も大切なことを忘れる時、我々はいつも絶望的な、破壊的なことをしでかしてしまうのです。
この園にあるもの全てに対して神様は彼らにその管理を委ね、彼らの思いのままにそこにある植物を食べてもよいと言われました。それらは彼らにとって最高、十二分なるものであり、言うまでもなく、それらだけで彼らは満たされ、神の守りと恵みのうちに生きることができたのです。しかし、そんなある日、彼らに蛇が近づき、語りかけました。
創世記３章５節 「それを食べると、あなたがたの目が開け、神のように善悪を知る者となることを、神は知っておられるのです」。
結論から言いますと、この言葉の後にアダムとエバはその実を口に入れます。そして、この時から人の心に罪が生まれ、人は死ななければならなくなったと聖書は記しています。
皆さんの中で人間関係に悩んだことがないという人はいないでしょう。互いを打ちのめすような言葉の応酬、策略、暴力、これらのことは私達のすぐ側にあります。世の中には略奪、詐欺、虚偽、淫乱、裏切り、疑心暗鬼、力の支配、破壊が満ちています。
これらの出どころはどこなのでしょうか。それは地中から出てきたのでしょうか。空から降ってきたのでしょうか。 いいえ、それは全て私達の心から出てきたものです。
この度の修養会で会場となったウエストモント大学の近くに湧く温泉に行ってきました。そこは山のふもとの傾斜のある場所で上から下にむかって段々畑のように、岩で囲まれた湯船が七、八個、あります。
一番、上からは源泉となるお湯がパイプから勢いよく沸いています。そのパイプから湧き出たお湯は上から下へと流れ、全ての湯船はその源泉の湯で満たされます。
同じように、アダムは全ての人間の罪の源泉であり、その後に続く全ての人間は、彼から流れ出たものの影響を免れることができないのです。パウロはこのことをローマ書の中に記しています。
ローマ５章１２節 このようなわけで、ひとりの人によって、罪がこの世にはいり、また罪によって死がはいってきたように、こうして、すべての人が罪を犯したので、死が全人類にはいり込んだのである。
私達人類の源であるアダムが罪に汚れたゆえに、後に続く全ての人間が罪の元にあるのです。このことは「そんなのいやです」とか、「アダム、お前はなんということしたのか」とアダムを非難してもどうすることもできないことです。私達は生まれた時から罪の性質を持っているのです。
蛇が彼らに語りかけた時、彼らの心にあったものは何だったのでしょうか。「確かにここは素晴らしい場所だ。しかし、私達は神のようにはなれない」「でも今、私達は神のようになれると聞いた。神はそれを私達に隠していたのだ。なんてひどい話だ！」「私は過小評価されている。私はこのように取り扱われるような者ではない」このようにアダムとエバを見ていますと、これが人間の姿であり、私達はそこに自分自身の姿を見出だすのです。
主にある皆さん、私達がこの一週間、直面した人と人との問題を思い起こしましょう。なぜ、それは起きたのでしょうか。
「神のようになりたい」とは、すなわち「自分を中心に生きたい」ということです。「俺はこうしたいのに、何であいつはいつも俺の邪魔をするんだ」「あいつの考えより、俺の考えのほうがいいだろう。だから俺の言うことを聞きなよ」「あいつには俺に対する敬意がない。さぁ、どう見返してやろうか」「聖書の言う言葉なんかに従っていたら、俺がしたいように生きることできないだろう！」
私たちが今、見ている世界の問題は、このような思いを互いにもつ人間同士のいざこざなのです。実を食べてしまったアダムとエバに神様は語りかけました。
創世記３章１１節－１３節 11「あなたが裸であるのを、だれが知らせたのか。食べるなと、命じておいた木から、あなたは取って食べたのか」。12人は答えた、「わたしと一緒にしてくださったあの女が、木から取ってくれたので、わたしは食べたのです」。13そこで主なる神は女に言われた、「あなたは、なんということをしたのです」。女は答えた、「へびがわたしをだましたのです。それでわたしは食べました」。
ここで彼らは自分がしてしまったことの責任を認めず、他者になすりつけました。
「わたしと一緒にしてくださったあの女が、木から取ってくれたので、わたしは食べたのです」（１２）
アダムは自分がしたことを神と妻になすりつけました。
「蛇がわたしをだましたのです。それでわたしは食べました」（１３）。
夫から指さされたエバは自分がしたことを蛇になすりつけました。最初にアダムとエバがあの実を食べた時、サタンは喜んだことでしょう。オーケー、これで人間の心には罪が植えつけられた！彼らの子孫はいつも、このことゆえに大いに苦しむだろう！
そして、さらに彼らが責任をなすりつけた時、サタンは喜びを爆発したことでしょう。罪が心に入っただけではなく、奴らは既に、己の罪を認めず、それを誰かのせいにしたぞ！
これで彼らもその子孫達も自分の罪と向き合うことはないだろう。ただ自分の正しさだけを主張し、彼らの関係は混乱し、壊れていくことだろう。もはや放っておいても奴らの前途には怒りや悲しみが山積みとなる。こんなに嬉しいことがあるかい！
主にある皆さん、私達の罪は自分を苦しめます。私達は罪の奴隷となり、自由を失います。そして、私達の罪は誰かを悲しませ、誰かの悩みとなります。私達は誰かの罪により傷つき、そのことに対して苦い思いを心にもちます。
アダムに罪が入った時、その時、神様は何を考えていたのでしょう。神様は創造のみわざをもって、アダムとエバが最高の日々を送れるように、彼らに最高の環境を備えたお方です。神様は彼らを大切に思われ、そして愛しておられました。彼らとの愛の交わりを願っていました。
しかし、その関係は壊れ、この後、アダムとエバはエデンの園から出て行ったのです。しかし、それでも神は人を愛しています。愛の関係を人に求めていた神様は、その愛をもって、彼らの失敗を修復し、解決できる道をお考えになりました。アダムが全ての人間に罪と死をもたらしたと先ほど、ローマ書５章から、お話ししました。パウロはその後に、こうも記しています。
ローマ書５章１７節－１９節 17もし、ひとりの罪過によって、そのひとりをとおして死が支配するに至ったとすれば、まして、あふれるばかりの恵みと義の賜物とを受けている者たちは、ひとりのイエス・キリストをとおし、いのちにあって、さらに力強く支配するはずではないか。18このようなわけで、ひとりの罪過によってすべての人が罪に定められたように、ひとりの義なる行為によって、いのちを得させる義がすべての人に及ぶのである。19すなわち、ひとりの人の不従順によって、多くの人が罪人とされたと同じように、ひとりの従順によって、多くの人が義人とされるのである。
このことのために神様は、御一人子イエス様をこの世界に誕生させました。そして、このイエス様はアダムにより私達の心にある罪を解決するために十字架におかかりになりました。「どういうこと？」と思われる方がいるかもしれません。
私達の罪は神と共に存在できないものなのです。アダムとエバが罪を犯した後に、その世界から出て行ったように、私達の罪は神と共にあり続けることはできないのです。神は完全に聖であり、義なるお方であるゆえに、この罪を見逃し、そのままにしておくことはできないのです。
罪は見過ごすものではなくて、裁かれないといけないものなのです。それが神は義であるということです。また我々は自分の力でこの罪を処理することはできないのです。このことに対して人間ができることは何もないのです。できないどころか、この罪は今日も明日も、私たちの心から抑えきれないような力をもって、湧き出てきてしまうものなのです。
アダムとエバがその時、かろうじてしたことは責任を転嫁することでした。それは自分が犯した罪でありながら、その責任を他者になすりつけることです。しかし、自分の罪を誰かになすりつけて、罪が解決されることはありませんでしょう。人の世界ではそれがまかり通ってしまうこともあるかもしれません。この世も罪にまみれているからです。しかし、神を前にして、そんなことが通るはずはありません。
アダムとエバがあの実を食べた後、彼らの人生は苦しみを伴うものとなりました。しかし、神様はその中に救いの可能性を残しました。その時以来、アダムの妻、エバは苦しんで子を産むことになりました。
このことゆえにアダムとエバの子孫である私達は皆、罪をもつ者として生まれることが決定しました。しかし、この出産を彼女に与えることにより、神は人類に希望を残したのです。それは後に、神の一人子が、アダムの血を引き継がない者として、聖霊により、処女マリアの胎に宿り、彼女から生まれるという希望です。
神はその一人子イエスを私達の元に送り、このイエスは私達の身代わりとして、十字架におかかりになりました。そこで神の罰をイエス様は全身に負われたのです。わたしのために、あなたのために。このことは言うなれば、私達が追うべき罪に対する私達の代償の責任を、イエス様自らが、前に進み出て、その代償を全て自分の身に負ってくださったということです。
自分のために神のようになりたかったアダム。神でありながら私達のために人となられたイエス・キリスト。木の下で罪が世界に入ったように、イエス様は木の上で、その罪の身代わりとなってくださいました。このイエス様が私達のために成されたことを説明するときに、どんな言葉が一番、ふさわしいのでしょうか。
主にある皆さん、一つの言葉しか思い浮かびませんでしょう。そうです、それは「愛」です。人の創造は神の愛から始まりました。しかし、罪はその神の愛と私達の関係を壊しました。
イエス様の十字架はこの神との愛の関係を再び、私たちに与えてくれるものです。この関係が修復される時、私たちは神が人間に求めている本来の生き方に立ち返ることができるのです。
アダムの罪により人に罪と死がやってきたと先に申し上げました。しかし、イエス・キリストにより、その私達の宿命である、この死にも光が当てられました。パウロはそのことについてもコリント人への手紙第一１５章２０-２２節で言及しています。
コリント人への手紙第一１５章２０-２２節 20しかし事実、キリストは眠っている者の初穂として、死人の中からよみがえったのである。21それは、死がひとりの人によってきたのだから、死人の復活もまた、ひとりの人によってこなければならない。22アダムにあってすべての人が死んでいるのと同じように、キリストにあってすべての人が生かされるのである。
主にある皆さん、聖書が記していることはすごいことです。アダムとイエス・キリストなんて、どこにも接点がないように私達には思われます。しかし、イエス・キリストはアダムが人類にもたらした罪と死に対して、完全な勝利を得ました。
先に言いましたでしょう。人が罪を犯し、それを認めず責任を転嫁した時に、サタンは大喜びしたと。しかし、イエス様はその私達の罪の責めをご自身に向けられ、私達の身代わりとなり、罪の裁きを受けてくださり、その死から復活され、私達にも復活の命を与えてくださっているのです。
主にある皆さん、サタンの側にこのイエス・キリストが既になしてくださったことを覆す力は何もないのです。宗教学では、イエス・キリストは偉大な宗教家の一人だったと言われます。しかし、どうでしょうか。
ここまで人間の抱える根源的な問題に肉薄し、そこに光を当てた私達と同じ人間がこれまでにいたでしょうか。どんな偉人も賢人も宗教の教祖と呼ばれるもの達も皆、アダムから受け継ぐ罪に悩み、そして、聖書が言うように皆、死んでいったのです。この罪と死に対して明確に勝利をとられたお方はイエス・キリスト以外にこの世界には誰もいないのです！ですから、私達は確信をもって、こう言うのです。
使徒行伝４章１２節「この方以外には、だれによっても救いはありません。天の下でこの御名のほかに、私たちが救われるべき名は人間に与えられていないからです」。
私たちは皆、罪人です。それゆえに私達は必ず死にます。しかし、この現実は今日、変わりうるものです。そう、私達は罪から救われ、永遠に生きる者に変えられるのです。
皆さんには人生の計画がおありでしょう。しかし、まず私達がしておくべきことは、この私達の罪と死の問題を解決しておくことです。このことを解決してから、じっくりと人生の計画をたてようではありませんか。
そして、その人生を主イエス・キリストと共に歩んでください。私達が想像していた以上の人生を神様は私たちに備えてくださることでしょう。

“Learning from Others, How to Live with God”
Heirs of Adam’s Blood

Today we begin a new message series called “Learning from Others, How to Live with God”. The Bible records the lives of many people just like us. Kings, soldiers, priests, slaves, farmers, soothsayers, fishermen, scholars, prostitutes, husbands, wives, fathers, sons, and daughters . . . .
There are wicked hearts and noble hearts. There is covetousness and there is selflessness. There is the rich and there is the poor. There is emptiness, there is passion, there is falsehood, there is sincerity. There is depravity and there is conversion.
We can learn from these human beings who once lived on this earth. What was the process by which they failed? When we know that, they become teachers who teach us important things. What process did they go through to live closer to God? When we know this, we can decide how to live our lives.
From now on, chronologically starting from Genesis, Pastor Honda and I will take turns to talk about the lives of people who lived in biblical times, and the heart of God who was involved with those human beings. And the first message was given to me to give.
If we are going to look at biblical figures chronologically, I am sure you all know who comes first. Yes, the first book of the Bible, Genesis, records the first human being, Adam. He is the source of all the human beings we are going to talk about. He was allowed to live in the Garden of Eden, enjoying and delighting in all that was there. At that time, he was placed in the perfect environment.
Genesis 2:7-9 7 Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. 8 Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there He put the man He had formed. 9 The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
When God finished creating the heavens and the earth, He looked at all His creation and said, “It was very good” (Genesis 1:31). Perhaps it is the same feeling an artist has when he or she finishes a work of art and looks at it with great admiration. He must have felt satisfied and confident that he had created a masterpiece.
So when we are moved by the setting sun, the ocean blue, or the activity of animals and plants, we are sharing in what God has called “It was very good”. It was under these circumstances that God gave Adam, Eve to be his wife. They began their married life together in the best of circumstances. At this point in time there was no death, no disease, and no creature that could turn its fangs against them. However, a serpent approached Adam and Eve. This serpent represented Satan.
Genesis 3:1-8 1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?” 2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’” 4 “You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves. 8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
Indeed, in the best of circumstances, they heard Satan’s suggestive whispers, reached for the forbidden fruit, and ate it. Why did God put such a disturbing tree there in the first place? Without it, Adam and Eve would not have had to cause trouble. The tree had an important meaning. Genesis tells us.
Genesis 1:27. So God created mankind in His own image, in the image of God He created them; male and female He created them.
The meaning of “mankind was created in the image of God” is that only human beings could establish a relationship with God that is founded on love and trust. Without this tree, it would have been impossible to know how much Adam and Eve voluntarily loved and trusted God. Therefore, among the myriad of trees that existed, God allowed one, and only one tree, to grow that would be a test of their will.
Adam and Eve had the freedom to keep their hands off the fruit, and they also had the freedom to put their hands on the fruit. Love is trusting and giving freedom to that other person.Our relationship of trust is fostered by how we use that freedom. Therefore, not doing what God did not wish meant love, trust, and respect for God.
Furthermore, the tree allowed them to know that there was a being who had the authority to place limits on them. By the tree, they were able to confirm that they were created and were not God. People in the Lord, when we forget this most important thing, we always end up doing something hopeless and destructive.
For everything in the garden, God gave to them to maintain it, and told them that they could eat of the plants there as they pleased. Needless to say, these were more than enough for them, and they were able to live in God’s protection and grace. But then one day, a serpent approached them and spoke to them.
Genesis 3:5 “For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
In conclusion, after these words, Adam and Eve put the fruit in their mouths. And from this time on, the Bible says, sin was born in the hearts of men and they had to die.
Who among you has not had a relationship problem? The exchange of words, deceit, and violence that bring each of us down are all around us. The world is full of plunder, deceit, falsehood, lewdness, treachery, suspicion, control of power, and destruction. Where did these come from?
Did they come out of the ground? Did they fall from the sky? No, it all came from our hearts.
I visited a hot spring near Westmont College, the venue for the recent Shuyokai. There are seven or eight bathtubs surrounded by rocks like terraced fields from top to bottom at the foot of the mountain.
At the top, hot water that is the source of the spring water is boiling out vigorously from a pipe . The hot water that gushes from that pipe flows from the top down, and all the bathtubs are filled with hot water from that source.
In the same way, Adam is the source of all human sin, and all who follow after him cannot escape the effects of what flows from him. Paul writes of this in the book of Romans.
Romans 5:12 Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned—
Because Adam, the source of our humanity, was defiled by sin, all subsequent human beings are under sin. There is nothing we can do about this by blaming Adam, saying, “I don’t like it,” or “Adam, what have you done?” We are born with a sin nature.
What was in their hearts when the serpent spoke to them? “Sure, this is a great place. But we cannot be like God.” “But now we hear we can be like God. God hid it from us. That’s terrible!” “I am undervalued. I am not the kind of person to be treated this way.” When we look at Adam and Eve in this way, this is the human condition, and we find ourselves in it. Dear people in the Lord, let us recall the human problems we faced this past week. Why did it happen?
To “want to be like God,” in other words, means to “live a life centered on myself.” “I want to do this, but why do they always getting in my way?” My idea is better than their idea. So, listen to me!” “They have no respect for me. Let’s see how I can get back at them.” “If I follow what the Bible says, I’ll never be able to live the way I want to!”
The problems we see in the world today are the quarrels between people who have these kinds of feelings toward each other. God spoke to Adam and Eve who ate the fruit.
Genesis 3:11-13 11 And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?” 12 The man said, “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.” 13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
Here they did not accept responsibility for what they had done and blamed others. “The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.” (Genesis 3:12)
Adam blamed God and his wife for what he had done. “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” (Genesis 3:13)
When her husband pointed the finger at her, Eve blamed the serpent for what she had done. Satan must have rejoiced when Adam and Eve first ate the fruit. Okay, now sin is implanted in the human heart! Their descendants will always suffer greatly because of this!
And furthermore, when they blamed others, Satan must have exploded with joy. Not only did sin enter their hearts, but they already blamed someone else for it, instead of admitting their own sin!
Now neither they nor their descendants will ever face up to their sins. They will only insist on their own righteousness, and their relationships will be confused and broken. There will be so much anger and sadness ahead of them that they will no longer be able to let go. What could be more joyous!
People in the Lord, our sin will torment us. We become slaves to sin and lose our freedom. And our sins grieve someone else and become someone else’s trouble. We are hurt by someone else’s sin and have bitterness in our hearts because of it.
When sin entered Adam, what was God thinking at that time? God, through His work of creation, provided the best environment for Adam and Eve so that they could live their best days. God cared for them and loved them. He wanted to have a loving fellowship with them.
But that relationship was broken, and Adam and Eve left the Garden of Eden after this. But God still loves people. God, who desired loving relationships for mankind, out of His love, devised a way in which their failure could be repaired and resolved. I told you earlier, from Romans 5, that Adam brought sin and death to all people. Paul thereafter also wrote the following.
Romans 5:17-19. 17 For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ!18 Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people, so also one righteous act resulted in justification and life for all people. 19 For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.
For this purpose, God had His only begotten Son Jesus be born into this world. And this Jesus went to the cross in order to remedy the sin in our hearts which have through Adam. You may be thinking, “What does that mean?”
Our sin cannot exist together with God. Just as Adam and Eve left the garden after they sinned, our sin cannot continue to exist together with God. Because God is perfectly holy and righteous, He cannot overlook this sin and leave it at that.
Sin is not something to be overlooked; it is something that must be judged. That is what it means for God to be righteous. And we cannot take care of this sin by ourselves. There is nothing we as human beings can do about it. Not only that, but this sin springs forth from our hearts with uncontrollable force, today and tomorrow.
What Adam and Eve barely did at the time was to shift the blame. It was their own sin, but they put the blame on someone else. However, sin will not be resolved by blaming someone else for one’s sins. In the human world, this may go unchecked. That is because this world is also riddled with sin. However, in the presence of God, such a thing cannot be accepted.
After Adam and Eve ate the fruit, their lives were filled with suffering. However, God left the possibility of salvation for them. Since that time, Adam’s wife, Eve, had to suffer and bear children.
Because of this, it was determined that all of us, descendants of Adam and Eve, would be born with sin. But by giving her this birth, God left hope for mankind. It is that later on, there would be the hope that God’s only begotten Son, who would not inherit Adam’s blood, would be conceived by the Holy Spirit in the womb of the virgin Mary, and would be born of her.
God sent His only begotten Son, Jesus, to us, who died on the cross as our substitute. There, Jesus took God’s punishment upon Himself. For my sake and yours. This means, in other words, that Jesus Himself stepped forward and took upon Himself the entire cost of the responsibility of our sins.
Adam who for his own sake wanted to be like God. Jesus Christ, who is God but became human for us.
Just as sin entered the world under a tree, Jesus took the place of that sin upon a tree. What words are best and most appropriate when explaining what this Jesus has done for us?
People in the Lord, I am sure that you can think of only one word. Yes, it is “love”. The creation of mankind began with God’s love. But sin broke our relationship with that divine love.
The cross of Jesus reestablishes this relationship of love with God for us. When this relationship is restored, we can return to the original way of life that God desires for us.
I mentioned earlier that sin and death came to man because of Adam’s sin. But through Jesus Christ, light has been shed on this death, which is our destiny. Paul also mentions this in 1 Corinthians 15:20-22.
1 Corinthians 15:20-22 20 But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. 22 For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive.
People in the Lord, it is amazing what the Bible records. It seems to us that there is no connection between Adam and Jesus Christ. But Jesus Christ has achieved total victory over sin and death that Adam brought upon mankind.
I have said it before. That Satan was overjoyed when man sinned and shifted the blame instead of admitting it. However, Jesus took the blame for our sins upon Himself, took our place, took the judgment for our sins, rose from the dead, and gave us resurrection life to us as well.
People in the Lord, there is no power on the part of Satan to overturn what this Jesus Christ has already done. Religious studies say that Jesus Christ was one of the greatest religious figures. But what do you think?
Has there ever been a human being like us who has fleshed out the fundamental problems of human beings and shed light on them? All the great people, all the wise people, and all the religious leaders were afflicted with the sin inherited from Adam, and as the Bible says, they all died. There is no one else in the world who has so clearly won the victory over sin and death except Jesus Christ! So we say this with conviction.
Acts 4:12 “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”
We are all sinners. Therefore, we will surely die. But this reality can change today. Yes, we can be saved from our sins and changed into those who will live forever.
I am sure you have a plan for your life. But the first thing we need to do is to resolve this issue of our sin and death. Let us resolve this matter and then take the time to plan our lives.
And then walk that life with the Lord Jesus Christ. God will provide us with a life beyond what we could have imagined.
