２０１１年、サバティカルをいただいた私は一人、イスラエルの死海にいました。死海は世界中から観光客が集まる場所で、ホテルが林立しています。その日の宿が決まっていなかった私はそれらのホテルで空室を聞いてまわりました。しかし、どのホテルも満室でした。
時は刻々と流れ、陽が沈みかけています。今晩、どこで眠るのかという課題が迫ってきました。死海の側に創世記に出てくる、硫黄の火によって滅ぼされたソドムがあります。そのソドムに小さな村落があることを知った私は、そこに一夜を過ごせる宿を探しました。一件の民家の前で足が止まりました。看板には「ラケルの家」と書かれています。門を叩くとおばあちゃんが出てきました。ラケルさんです。その時に与えられた部屋の鍵がこれです。今は見ることのない、その鍵を見た瞬間、私の心は創世記の時代にいました。
その晩、部屋の中で一人、古の夜、創世記に記録されている、この場所、ソドムで起きたおぞましい出来事を思いめぐらしました。その時の私は一夜の宿を求める旅人であり、状況はあまりにもリアルでした。寝つけない夜を過ごし、翌朝、ラケルおばあちゃんが作ってくれた朝食を食べ、ソドムを後にしました。私はあの夜のことを、決して忘れることがないでしょう。
今日はその昔、このソドムに移り住んだ人、ロトについてお話しします。

ロト：見えるところによらず、高嶺を目指す

創世記１２章はこんな言葉で始まります。創世記１２章１節、『時に主はアブラムに言われた、「あなたは国を出て、親族に別れ、父の家を離れ、わたしが示す地に行きなさい」
神様はアブラハムが７５歳の時に語りかけ、彼はその言葉を信じて妻、サラとともに住み慣れた地、ハランを出ていきました。その時に彼らと共に出て行ったのがアブラハムの甥のロトでした。彼らは旅を続け、しばしの間、共に暮らしますが、ある日、アブラハムとロトは別れて暮らすという選択をします。事の経緯はこうでした。
アブラハムもロトも共に多くの家畜を所有していました。それゆえに、この家畜に必要な草や水の配分が難しくなり、そのことゆえに生じる争いを避けるために、穏やかに別れるという道を選んだのです。アブラハムは年長者であったにもかかわらず甥のロトに「あなたが右に行くなら私は左へ行く」と土地の選択の優先権をロトに譲りました。その時のことについて創世記はこう記しています。
創世記１３章１０節－１３節、10ロトが目を上げてヨルダンの低地をあまねく見わたすと、主がソドムとゴモラを滅ぼされる前であったから、ゾアルまで主の園のように、またエジプトの地のように、すみずみまでよく潤っていた。11そこでロトはヨルダンの低地をことごとく選びとって東に移った。こうして彼らは互に別れた。12アブラムはカナンの地に住んだが、ロトは低地の町々に住み、天幕をソドムに移した。13ソドムの人々はわるく、主に対して、はなはだしい罪びとであった。
ロトはソドムとゴモラがエデンの園のように豊かに潤い、緑が生えているように見えたので、ソドムを選び、そちらへと向かいました。彼はそこで繁栄を得ることができると思ったのでしょう。このようなことを想像しますと、豊かに見える土地を選んだロトは幸いな生活を送ったのだろうと私達には思えます。しかし、聖書はとても気になる言葉を一言、書き残しています。
創世記１３章１３節、『ソドムの人々はわるく、主に対して、はなはだしい罪びとであった』
ある日の夕暮れ、ロトがソドムの門に座っていたところ、二人の旅人がやってきました。当時、町の門に座る人は町の長老的な存在の人達でしたから、ロトもソドムでそれなりの地位を確立したことが想像できます。この行きすがりの旅人はその晩、町の広場で眠ると聞き、ロトは強いて彼らを自宅に招きます。その時のロトは気がついていませんでしたが、この二人は神がソドムの様子を知るために遣わした御使いでした。
こうして日が暮れ、夜となりました。そうしますと町のあちこちから若い者から年寄りまでがロトの家にやってきまして家を取り囲み、こう言いました。
創世記１９章５節、『今夜、お前の所に来た人々はどこにいるか。それをここに出しなさい。我々は彼らを知るであろう』
この「知る」という言葉は聖書の中で度々使われる言葉なのですが、それは性的な関係を持つという言葉で、ロトの家の周りを囲んだ男達はこの二人の男を強姦しようとしてやって来たのです。
英語には「Sodomy」という言葉がありまして、これは不自然な性的行為が人間や動物に向けられるという言葉であり、この言葉はこのソドムから来ているのです。
そう、この町は性的に堕落しており、人々はあらゆるものと乱交し、近親相姦が当たり前のようになされているような町だったようです。行きすがりの旅人であった私がなぜソドムでの夜、なかなか寝つけなかったか、その理由がお分かりになったと思います。確認しましょう。なぜロトはソドムに住み着いたのでしょうか。
そうです、『ロトが目を上げてヨルダンの低地をあまねく見わたすと、主がソドムとゴモラを滅ぼされる前であったから、ゾアルまで主の園のように、またエジプトの地のように、すみずみまでよく潤っていた』（創世記１３章１０節）からです。
目に見えるものは私達の心に訴えます。見えるものに私達は心動かされ、そのことにより人生の諸々の決断をします。先に私はこう言いました。「豊かに見える土地を選んだロトは幸いな生活を送ったのだろう」と。
私達の多くはアメリカに移り住んできた者達です。どの年代に移住してきたかにもよるでしょうが、もしかしたら、私達を知る者達は、「彼らはアメリカで豊かな生活を送っているのだろう」と思うかもしれません。確かにアメリカは世界で一番の経済力があります。しかし、実際はどうでしょうか。見た目や、数字においては目を見張るものがあるかもしれない。しかし、そこにはいつも落とし穴があります。エデンの園にて、禁断の実を前にしたエバとアダムを心に刻みましょう。
創世記３章６節、『女がその木を見ると、それは食べるによく、目には美しく、賢くなるには好ましいと思われたから、その実を取って食べ、また共にいった夫にも与えたので、彼も食べた』
きっと皆さんは「見た目はよかったのに、実際は・・・」という経験をなさったことがあるでしょう。「見た目によいもの」をかき集めれば、幸せになれると私達は思います。しかし、私たちは人生の経験を通して、気がついています。「いや、実際にはそんなことはない。大切なことは、そのようなことではない」しかし、それでも「見た目によいもの」を私達は求め続けます。コリント第二の手紙５章７節には私達に向けられた新しい生き方の勧めがあります。
コリント第二の手紙５章７節、『わたしたちは、見えるものによらないで、信仰によって歩いているのである』
見えるところによらず、信仰によって歩む生涯へと私達は招かれています。アブラハムはその見えないものに目を止めました。彼の目にもソドムとゴモラは豊かな土地として見えたかもしれません。しかし、彼はそれに飛びつくことなく、ロトが好む土地を選ばせ、彼はロトが選ばなかったカナンの地に住んだのです。そして、そのカナンこそが、神がアブラハムに約束した土地だったのです。この信仰ゆえにヘブル書の記者はアブラハムを称賛しています。
ヘブル書１１章８節、９節、8信仰によって、アブラハムは、受け継ぐべき地に出て行けとの召しをこうむった時、それに従い、行く先を知らないで出て行った。9信仰によって、他国にいるようにして約束の地に宿り、同じ約束を継ぐイサク、ヤコブと共に、幕屋に住んだ。
彼がハランの地を出たのも信仰、約束の地に住んだのも信仰だったのです。私達は今の時代を不透明な時代と呼びます。そうです、行く先が見えないのです。この時代が不透明であるのなら、その見えない世界を見ていく信仰こそが、今、私達に不可欠なものなのではないでしょうか。この霊の視力が与えられていることが、私達にとりましてどんなに大切なことか、このことは何度、繰り返し申し上げても足りないほどです。信仰生活を送る、教会生活を送るということはすなわち、この信仰の目が養われるということなのでしょう。
これからも私達の目の前には色々なものが通り過ぎていくことでしょう。私達は大抵、それらのことで一喜一憂するわけですが、そのことだけに心を奪われてしまうのではなくて、その背後にある見えないものを見ていこうではありませんか。「ここぞ！」という人生の節目であるとか、生死が関わるような危機の時に、とてつもない力を私達に与えてくれるもの、それが信仰なのです。
二つ目の事をお話しします。ソドムに偵察に来ましたみ使いは、あの夜の出来事を通して、その町が堕落しきっているということの確証を得ます。そこで神様はいよいよ、このソドムを滅ぼします。そのことを知ったロトについて創世記はこう記しています。
創世記１９章１４節－１７節、14そこでロトは出て行って、その娘たちをめとるむこたちに告げて言った、「立ってこの所から出なさい。主がこの町を滅ぼされます」。しかしそれはむこたちには戯むれごとに思えた。15夜が明けて、み使たちはロトを促して言った「立って、ここにいるあなたの妻とふたりの娘とを連れ出しなさい。そうしなければ、あなたもこの町の不義のために滅ぼされるでしょう」。16彼はためらっていたが、主は彼にあわれみを施されたので、かのふたりは彼の手と、その妻の手と、ふたりの娘の手を取って連れ出し、町の外に置いた。17彼らを外に連れ出した時そのひとりは言った、「のがれて、自分の命を救いなさい。うしろをふりかえって見てはならない。低地にはどこにも立ち止まってはならない。山にのがれなさい。そうしなければ、あなたは滅びます」。
ロトは二人の娘の義理の息子達に「逃げろ！」と言いました。しかし、彼らはソドムが滅ぼされることを戯れ事のように聞いていました。夜が明けて、御使いがいよいよ、ここから逃げるようにとロトに言った時、ロトは「ためらっていた」（１６節）と聖書は記しています。ゆえに、いよいよ町が滅ぼされるという時に、かの御使いはロトとその妻、そして二人の娘の手を取り、町の外に出たのです。創世記１９章１６節はこう記録しています。
創世記１９章１６節、『主は彼にあわれみを施されたので、かのふたりは彼の手と、その妻の手と、ふたりの娘の手を取って連れ出し、町の外に置いた』
逃げることをためらっていた、ロトに神様はあわれみをかけました。御使い達は主のロトに対するあわれみに従い、ためらう彼らの手を握り、救い出そうとしたのです。なぜ神様はここまでしてロト達をあわれみ、救おうとされたのでしょうか。
かつて、主がソドムを滅ぼそうとしていることを知ったアブラハムは、必死になってソドムが滅ぼされることがないように、神様にしつこく、そのあわれみを請うていました。詳細は省きますが、アブラハムは実に六度も神様にソドムを滅ぼすことがないようにと、神のあわれみを懇願しているのです（創世記１８章２２節－３３節）。もちろん、彼の心の中には甥ロトとその家族のことが第一にあったに違いありません。神様はそのアブラハムの懇願を知っていました。それゆえ、このアブラハムの心に対して、神様はロトとその家族にあわれみを注がれたのでしょう。
私達が悪の道に落ちていく時、神を離れて生きようとする時、主は誰かを通して、出来事を通して、私達にあわれみを示されます。「どん底にいたのに守られた」、「あのすさんだ生き方から救われた」このようなことが私達の身の上に起きたとするのなら、それはきっと誰かがアブラハムのように、私達のために祈っていてくれたからでしょう。神様は私達にあわれみをかけてくださったのでしょう。しかし、悲しいかな、私達は、その神のあわれみに気がつかず、そのあわれみを拒むことがあります。私達もロトの息子達のように、神様のあわれみを戯れ言のように受け取るのです。
主にある兄弟姉妹、私達が生き方を変えることができる間に、神のあわれみに応えようではありませんか。ロトと妻、二人の娘はみ使い達に手をひかれて、町の外にまで連れ出されました。そして、その彼らに御使いは言ったのです。
創世記１９章１７節、「のがれて、自分の命を救いなさい。うしろをふりかえって見てはならない。低地にはどこにも立ち止まってはならない。山にのがれなさい。そうしなければ、あなたは滅びます」。
御使いは言いました。逃れて自分の命を救いなさい。後ろを振り返ってはならない。低地にとどまらず、山に、すなわち高いところに逃れなさい。そうしなければあなたたちも滅びます。
この後、ソドムとゴモラには何が起きたのでしょうか。そう神は天から硫黄と火を降らせ、ソドムとゴモラを滅ぼしました。それは逃げられるようなものではなく、ソドム、すなわち低地にいた者達は皆、滅ぼされたのです。
どうぞ、覚えてください、神のあわれみにより、御使いは彼らの手をとり、ソドムの外に彼らを導きだしました。しかし、そこで御使いは彼らから手を離し、その先は彼らに委ねたのです。御使いは彼らに救われるためのディレクションを与えたのです。「後ろを振り向くな、低地にとどまるな、高嶺を目指しなさい」
しかし、御使いは彼らが後ろを振り返らないようにと、彼らの頭を抑え込みませんでした。低地にとどまらず、高嶺を目指すために、彼らを背負うことはありませんでした。
主にある皆さん、ここから先は私次第、あなた次第なのです。主は言われるのです。「さぁ、自分の命を救うのだ」。後ろを振り返らず、低地にとどまらず高嶺を目指すのは私達自身なのです。その「意思」と「行動」を主は私達に託しています。
彼らはこの言葉に従い、高嶺に向けて歩き出しました。しかし、ロトの妻は後ろを振り返ってしまいました。その時、彼女の心にあったものは何でしょうか。私達は彼女の心にその時あったことについて、想像します。おそらく今、私達が想像したことが彼女の心にあって、彼女は振り返ったのです。そう、彼女は昨日までの自分を振り返ったのです。
そして、私たちも少なからず、彼女の思いを共有する者達です。彼女は後ろを振り返ったために、塩の柱になってしまったと聖書は言います。今もこの「ロトの妻の塩の柱」と呼ばれるものがソドムにあります。
言うまでもなく、これは本当のロトの妻の塩の柱ではないでしょう。きっと本物は既に朽ち果ててしまったことでしょう。しかし、荒涼とした岩山に立つその塩の柱は、後ろを振り返った人間の悲しみを今日、私達に伝えているのです。
主にある皆さん、もしかしたら皆さんの中に「後ろを振り向くな」という言葉を今、必要としている人がいるかもしれません。それは過去の後悔であったり、過去の失敗かもしれません。「低地にとどまらず、高嶺を目指せ」という言葉を必要としている方がいるかもしれません。自分は長い間、低地にいる。自分がそこにいるのは分かっている。しかし、どうしたらいいのか分からない。ここから一歩を踏み出すことができない。第二ペテロ２章２２節にはこんな言葉があります。
第二ペテロ２章２２節、「犬は自分の吐いた物に帰り、豚は洗われても、また、泥の中にころがって行く」
同じ場所から離れず、そこに帰ってくる者に対する聖書の厳しい言葉です。ここには犬と豚という動物が取り上げられています。しかし、皆さん、私達は犬でも豚でもない。私たちは人間です。
聖書は人間だけが「神のかたち」に造られたのだと言います。それが何を意味しているかご存知でしょうか。私達は神によって、低地にとどまり続けるように造られたのではないのです。私達は高嶺を目指して生きるように神によって造られたのです。ここに人間の高潔さがあります。
今朝、私達がこの礼拝に出席していることは神のあわれみです。皆さんの中には、もしかしたら「来たくないけど、義理で礼拝に来ました」という方がいるかもしれません。「キリストの過ちを論破したくて来た」という動機をお持ちの方がいるかもしれません。いかなる理由であれ、あなたがこの教会に来たこと、きっとその背後には誰かの祈りがあったのだと私は信じています。
それは目には見えずとども、ためらう私達の手を御使いが握って、ここに連れてきたということでしょう。しかし、どうかこのことを知ってください。神様はここから先のことについて、私達の決断に委ねております。そこから先は、あなたがどうあるかということに一重にかかっているのです。
このようなことを聞くと、その前途に恐れを感じる方がいるかもしれません。ここからは孤高の旅となるのかとたじろいでしまう方がいるかもしれません。どうぞ知ってください。私たちは一人で高嶺を目指すのではありません。私達はここから、牧者なるイエス・キリストと共に、この人生を歩むのです。そして、その前後にはクリスチャンと呼ばれる者達がいるのです。教会はベースキャンプのような場所です。
毎週、私達はここに集い、主を礼拝し、互いに励まし合い、また立ち上がり、高嶺を目指すのです。私達の人生はその繰り返しなのです。このことを繰り返しながら、私達は毎日、高嶺を目指しているのです。
主にある皆さん、不透明な時代と言われるこの世界に生きている私達は見えることだけで生きていくのではなく、信仰という力を獲得しませんか。「信仰」はどこにも売っていませんよ。それは値段がつかないほど価値があるものだからです。これからの人生、この信仰は必ず私達を助けてくれます。私達は近い将来、この信仰の絶大なる力を知ることになるでしょう。聖書の約束に従えば、私達の命が終わる時、その時に私達は必ず思うはず。信仰を持っていてよかったと！
いつも後ろを振り返り、そこから前に進むことができないというような人生に別れを告げませんか。「このまま、私と共に低地にいよう」というささやきを聞くのなら、それに背を向けて、共に高嶺を目指そうではありませんか。あなたは高嶺を目指すように造られているのです。
神の創造の目的に叶った生き方をしましょう。それが人間の本文なのだと聖書は私たちに語り続けているのです。主の御声が心に聴こえませんでしょうか、「低地にとどまるな。後ろを振り向くな。高嶺を目指せ」これは戯言ではありません。主にある皆さん、ここから新しい人生を始めようではありませんか！

Lot: Aim For the High Peaks, Not According to What You See

In 2011, I was alone on sabbatical, at the Dead Sea in Israel. The Dead Sea attracts tourists from all over the world, and there are a great number of hotels. Not having decided on a place to stay for the day, I asked around about available rooms at those hotels. However, all the hotels were full. The clock is ticking and the sun is setting. The task of where to sleep tonight looms.
Near the Dead Sea is Sodom, mentioned in the Book of Genesis that was destroyed by sulfuric fire. When I learned that there was a small village in that Sodom, I looked for an inn there where I could spend the night.
I stopped in front of one private house. It was Rachel’s house. I knocked on the door and an elderly lady came out. This is Mrs. Rachel.
Here is the key to the room given to me at that time. The moment I saw that key, which we don’t see now, my mind was in the time of Genesis.
Alone in my room that night, I contemplated the horrific events that took place in this place, Sodom, as recorded in the Book of Genesis on that ancient night. At that time I was a traveler seeking lodging for the night, and the situation was all too real. After a sleepless night, I left Sodom the next morning after eating breakfast prepared by grandma Rachel. I will never forget that night. Today I will tell you about Lot, a man who moved to this Sodom long ago.
Genesis 12 begins with these words.
Genesis 12:1 The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.”
God spoke to Abraham when he was 75 years old, and he believed those words and left the familiar land of Haran with his wife, Sarah. It was Abraham’s nephew Lot who went out with them at that time. They continue their journey and live together for a while, but one day, Abraham and Lot decide to live separately. The story goes like this.
Both Abraham and Lot owned many livestock. Therefore, it became difficult to distribute the grass and water needed for this livestock, and they chose to part peacefully in order to avoid the conflict that would ensue. Abraham, despite being the elder, gave his nephew Lot the priority in the choice of land, saying to Lot, “If you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.” Genesis describes that time in the following manner.
Genesis 13:10-13 Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan toward Zoar was well watered, like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt. (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) 11 So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company: 12 Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom. 13 Now the people of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord.
Lot chose Sodom and Gomorrah because they appeared to be well watered and green like the Garden of Eden, and he headed that way. He must have thought he could gain prosperity there. Imagining all this, it seems to us that Lot must have lived a fortunate life, having chosen a land that appeared to him to be rich. However, the Bible mentions one thing that is very disturbing.
Genesis 13:13, Now the people of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord.
One day at dusk, as Lot was sitting at the gate of Sodom, two travelers came there.
In those days, the people who sat at the city gate were elders of the city, so one can imagine that Lot had established himself in Sodom in a certain way. Hearing that these travelers passing by would be sleeping in the city square that night, Lot compelled them to come to his home. Unbeknownst to Lot at the time, these two men were angels sent by God to know what was going on in Sodom.
Thus the sun set and night fell. Then all the men from every part of the city—both young and old—surrounded Lot’s house, and said:
Genesis 19:5, “Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may know them carnally” (NKJV).
The word “know” is used often in the Bible to refer to sexual relations, and the men who surrounded Lot’s house came to rape these two men.The English language has a word “Sodomy,” which is a term for unnatural sexual acts directed at humans or animals, and this word comes from this Sodom.
Yes, it seems that this was a sexually depraved town where people had orgies with all manner of things and incest was commonplace. Now you know why, as a traveler passing by, I had a hard time sleeping that night in Sodom. Let us confirm. Why did Lot settle in Sodom?
That is because, Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan toward Zoar was well watered, like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt. (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.) (Genesis 13:10).
What we see appeals to our hearts. We are moved by what we see, and we make decisions about our lives based on it. Earlier I said, “Lot must have lived a fortunate life, having chosen a land that appeared to him to be rich.”
Many of us are immigrants to the United States. Depending on what time period we immigrated, perhaps those who know us might think, “They must be living a rich life in the U.S.” It is true that the United States has the best economy in the world. But what is it really like? According to appearances and numbers it may look spectacular. However, there are always pitfalls. Let us keep in mind Eve and Adam in front of the forbidden fruit in the Garden of Eden.
Genesis 3:6, When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.
I am sure that all of you have had the experience of “it looked good, but in reality . . .” We believe that if we can scrape together “what looks good,” we can be happy. However, through our life experiences, we have noticed. “No, in reality, it is not like that. What matters is not that.” But still, we continue to seek “what looks good”. In 2 Corinthians 5:7 there is an exhortation to a new way of life addressed to us.
2 Corinthians 5:7,For we live by faith, not by sight.
We are invited to a life of walking by faith, not by sight. Abraham fixed his eyes upon that which could not be seen. Even in his eyes, Sodom and Gomorrah may have appeared as a land of plenty. But he didn’t jump on it; he let Lot choose the land he preferred, and he lived in the land of Canaan, which Lot did not choose. And that Canaan was the land that God promised to Abraham. Because of this faith, the writer of Hebrews acknowledges Abraham.
Hebrews 11:8, 9,8 By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. 9 By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise.
It was by faith that he left the land of Haran, and it was by faith that he lived in the Promised Land. We call these times uncertain. Yes, we cannot see where we are going. If these times are uncertain, then faith to see the unseen world is what is essential for us now. I cannot say enough about how important it is for us to be given this spiritual sight. Living a life of faith and living a church life, in other words, must mean that this eye of faith is nurtured.
Many things will continue to pass before our eyes. We are usually happy or sad about such things. However, let us not be so preoccupied with them, and instead let us look at the unseen things that are behind them. Faith is what gives us tremendous power in times of “This is it!” milestones in life, and life and death crisis moments.
Let me tell you about the second thing. The angels who came to Sodom on a reconnaissance mission received confirmation of the city’s depravity through the events of that night. So God finally destroys Sodom. Genesis tells us the following about Lot who learned of this.
Genesis 19:14-17, 14 So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who were pledged to marry his daughters. He said, “Hurry and get out of this place, because the Lord is about to destroy the city!” But his sons-in-law thought he was joking. 15 With the coming of dawn, the angels urged Lot, saying, “Hurry! Take your wife and your two daughters who are here, or you will be swept away when the city is punished.” 16 When he hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters and led them safely out of the city, for the Lord was merciful to them. 17 As soon as they had brought them out, one of them said, “Flee for your lives! Don’t look back, and don’t stop anywhere in the plain! Flee to the mountains or you will be swept away!”
Lot told his two sons-in-law, “Flee!” But they listened to the news of Sodom being destroyed as if it was a joke. When it was dawn, and the angels finally told Lot to flee, the Bible notes that Lot “hesitated” (Genesis 19:16). Therefore, when the city was about to be destroyed, the angels took Lot, his wife, and their two daughters by the hand and led them out of the city. Genesis 19:16 records this.

God had mercy on Lot, who was hesitant to flee. The angels obeyed the Lord’s mercy toward Lot, took hold of their hesitant hands, and tried to save them. Why did God go to such lengths to have mercy on Lot and his family and to save them?
Once, when Abraham learned that the Lord was about to destroy Sodom, he was desperate and persistent in begging God for His mercy so that Sodom would not be destroyed. I won’t go into the details, but Abraham actually pleads with God six times for His mercy not to destroy Sodom (Genesis 18:22-33). Of course, his nephew Lot and his family must have been foremost in his mind. Therefore, God must have poured out His mercy on Lot and his family for this heart of Abraham.
When we fall into evil ways, when we try to live apart from God, the Lord shows us mercy through someone, through events. “I was at rock bottom, but I was protected.” “I was saved from that messy way of life.” If this has happened to us, it is surely because someone, like Abraham, was praying for us. God must have had mercy on us. But sadly, we may be oblivious to that mercy of God and reject it. We, like Lot’s sons-in-law, receive God’s mercy as a joke.
Brothers and sisters in the Lord, let us respond to God’s mercy while we can change our way of life. Lot and his wife, and two daughters were led by the angels out of the city. And the angel said to them.
Genesis 19:17, “Flee for your lives! Don’t look back, and don’t stop anywhere in the plain! Flee to the mountains or you will be swept away!”
The angel said. Flee for your lives. Don’t look back. Do not remain in the plain, but flee to the mountains, that is, to higher ground. If you do not, you too will perish.
What happened to Sodom and Gomorrah after this? Yes, God rained down burning sulfur from heaven to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. It was not something that could be escaped, and Sodom, that is all those in the plain, were destroyed.
Please remember, in God’s mercy, the angels took their hands and led them out of Sodom. However, then the angels let go of their hands, and left the rest to them. The angels gave them directions in order to be saved. “Don’t look back, don’t remain in the plain, aim for the high peaks.”
However, the angels did not restrain their heads from looking back. They did carry them on their backs, so that they would not remain in the plain, and to aim for the high peaks.
People in the Lord, it is up to me and up to you from here on out. The Lord says. “Now, save your own life.” It is we ourselves who will not look back, not remain in the plain, and aim for the high peaks. The Lord entrusts us with that “will” and “action”.
They followed these words and walked toward the high peaks. But Lot’s wife looked back. What was on her mind at that time? We imagine about what was on her mind at that time. Perhaps what we have just imagined was on her mind, and she looked back. Yes, she looked back at herself until yesterday.
And we are, in no small part, those who share her feelings. The Bible says that she looked back and became a pillar of salt.
Even today, this “pillar of salt of Lot’s wife,” as it is called, is in Sodom. Needless to say, this is probably not the real pillar of salt of Lot’s wife. I am sure the real one has already decayed. However, the pillar of salt standing on a desolate rocky mountain, tells us today of the sorrow of those who have looked back.
People in the Lord, perhaps one of you needs the words “don’t look back” right now. It may be a past regret or a past failure. Some of you may need the words, “Don’t remain in the plain, aim for the high peaks.” I have been in the plain for a long time. I know I am there. But I don’t know what to do. I cannot take a step forward from here.In 2 Peter 2:22, we read these words.
2 Peter 2:22, “A dog returns to its vomit,” and, “A sow that is washed returns to her wallowing in the mud.”
These are the harsh words of the Bible against those who do not leave the same place and return there. The animals featured here are dogs and pigs. But, ladies and gentlemen, we are not dogs or pigs. We are human beings.
The Bible says that only human beings are created “in the image of God”. Do you know what that means? We were not created by God to remain in the plain. We were created by God to live aiming for the high peak. Herein lies human integrity.
It is God’s mercy that we are attending this worship service this morning. Some of you may perhaps say, “I didn’t want to come, but I came to the service out of obligation.”
You may have the motive of “I’m here to debunk the claims of Christ.” No matter what the reason may be, I believe that you came to this church because someone has been praying for you.
Although we could not see it, an angel held our hesitant hand and brought us here. But please know this. God leaves it up to us to make our own decisions about what to do from here. From that point forward, it is single-mindedly up to you to be who you are.
Hearing this may cause some of you to feel fearful about the road ahead. Some may flinch at the thought that it will be a solitary journey from here. Please know. We are not aiming for the high peaks alone. From here, we walk through this life with our Shepherd, Jesus Christ. And there are those before and after us who are called Christians. The church is like a base camp.
Each week we gather here to worship the Lord, to encourage one another, to rise up again, and to aim for the high peaks. Our life is a repetition of this process. As we repeat this, every day, we aim for the high peaks.
People in the Lord, living in what is said to be uncertain times in this world, let us not live only by what we can see, but let us acquire the power of faith. You won’t find “faith” for sale anywhere. That’s because it is priceless. This faith will surely help us in the future. We will know the immense power of this faith in the near future. If we follow the promises of the Bible, we will surely think at the end of our lives. I am glad I had faith!
Why not say goodbye to a life that always looks backward and never moves forward from there? If you hear the whisper, “Remain in the plain with me,” then let us turn our backs on that and together aim for the high peaks. You were made to aim for the high peaks.
Let us live a life that fulfills the purpose of God’s creation. The Bible keeps telling us that is the true human storyline. Do you not hear the voice of the Lord in your heart, “Do not remain in the plain. Don’t look back. Aim for the high peaks.” This is no joke. People in the Lord, let us start a new life from here on!
