Happy Second Advent Sunday! 第二アドベントの日曜日、おめでとうございます！
Every Sunday is a day for us to corporately worship God, and is therefore special. 毎週日曜日は神様を礼拝する日であり、特別な日です。
However, today, we also have the blessing of enjoying a wonderful Christmas luncheon together. しかし今日は、素晴らしいクリスマス・ランチを共に楽しむ祝福もあります。
And right after the luncheon, we will enjoy a wonderful Christmas Program together. そしてランチの後には素晴らしいクリスマス・プログラムを共に楽しみます。
This year’s title of the Christmas Program is “Christmas Wonder, Christmas DeLight”. 今年のクリスマス・プログラムのタイトルは「クリスマスの不思議、クリスマスの喜び」です。
So, this morning, I would like to talk about three wonderful DeLIGHTS that surround the Christmas narrative. そこで今朝は、クリスマスの物語を取り巻く３つの素晴らしい喜びについてお話したいと思います。

As I mentioned already, I would like to talk about three wonderful DeLIGHTS that surround the Christmas narrative. 既に述べたように、私はクリスマスの物語を取り巻く三つの素晴らしい喜びについてお話したいと思います。
All three of these delights, or more specifically lights, have to do with what is known as the Shechinah Glory of God. これら三つの喜び、より具体的には光はすべて、神のシャカイナの栄光として知られているものと関係があります。
What is the Shechinah Glory of God? 神のシャカイナの栄光とは何でしょうか？
The Shechinah Glory is the visible manifestation of the presence of God. シャカイナの栄光とは神様の臨在が目に見える形で現れることです。
Although God is invisible to us, whenever He makes His presence visible to us, this is the Shechinah Glory. 神様は私達には見えませんが、神様がその存在を私達に見えるようにしてくださる時はいつでも、これがシャカイナの栄光となります。
The usual title found in the Scriptures for the Shechinah Glory is “the glory of the Lord.” 聖書の中でシャカイナの栄光を表す一般的な呼称は 「主の栄光 」です。
It can also be described as “brightness,” “brilliance,” or “splendor.” また「輝き」「光輝」「光彩 」とも表現されます。
In the Old Testament, most of these visible manifestations took the form of light, fire, cloud, or a combination of these. 旧約聖書では、これらの目に見える顕現のほとんどは光、火、雲、またはこれらの組み合わせの形をとっていました。
And for the Israelites, God’s glorious presence with them visibly manifested through these things そしてイスラエルの民にとって、これらを通して目に見える形で示される神様の栄光の臨在は、
gave them hope, joy, peace, and strength, as God’s chosen people. 神様に選ばれた民として、彼らに希望、喜び、平安、力を与えました。
In the New Testament, we see the Shechinah Glory shown clearly at the time of Christ Jesus’ birth. 新約聖書ではキリスト・イエスの誕生の時にシャカイナの栄光がはっきりと示されました。
We see this first of all when the angel of the Lord appeared to the shepherds. まず、主の使いが羊飼いたちに現れた時です。
Luke 2:8-9（ルカの福音書２章８節—９節）
8 In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. 8さて、この地方で羊飼たちが夜、野宿しながら羊の群れの番をしていた。9すると主の御使が現れ、主の栄光が彼らをめぐり照したので、彼らは非常に恐れた。
It was the glory of the Lord that appeared and it shone around them. それは主の栄光の現われであり、それは彼らの周りを照らしました。
This is clearly the appearance of the Shechinah Glory, and with it, the angel of the Lord stood before the shepherds. これは明らかにシャカイナの栄光の出現であり、それと共に主のみ使いが羊飼いたちの前に立ちました。
What a sight that must have been! その光景はさぞかし素晴らしかったことでしょう！
The night sky around the fields outside of Bethlehem were filled with the brightness of God’s glory! ベツレヘム郊外の野原を囲む夜空は、神の栄光の輝きで満たされたのです！
For the first time, since the glory of the Lord departed from Israel in the days of Ezekiel, in more than five centuries, the glory of the Lord reappeared. エゼキエルの時代に主の栄光がイスラエルから去って以来、５世紀以上ぶりに主の栄光が再び現れたのです。
How awesome and terrifying that must have been for the shepherds keeping watch over their flock! 羊の群れを見張っていた羊飼いたちにとって、それはどれほど素晴らしく、恐ろしいことであったに違いありません！
And then the angel of the Lord announced the birth of the Messiah to the shepherds and told them where they could find Him. そして、主のみ使いは羊飼いたちにメシアの誕生を告げ、どこでメシアを見つけることができるかを告げたのです。

Not only did the shepherds get to see the glory of the Lord and hear the wonderful announcement of the birth of the Christ in Bethlehem, 羊飼い達は主の栄光を目の当たりにし、ベツレヘムでのキリスト誕生の素晴らしいお告げを聞いただけではなく、
but they also got to hear the heavenly host praising God! 天の軍勢が神を賛美する声も聞くことができたのです！
I pray that our Christmas Program this afternoon will be just as wonderful and festive as that first Christmas night. 今日の午後のクリスマス・プログラムが、あの最初のクリスマスの夜と同じように、素晴らしく華やかなものになるよう祈ります。
We too want to declare the wonderful tidings of God’s glory and peace, and sing praises to God. 私達もまた、神の栄光と平和のすばらしい知らせを宣言し、神への賛美を歌いたいと思います。
In the Christmas Program this afternoon, the Christmas choir will be singing the song “Star of Wonder”. 今日の午後のクリスマス・プログラムでは、聖歌隊が 「Star of Wonder 」を歌います。

This sentiment can be found in the magi who saw a star in the east and followed it all the way to where the baby Jesus was in Bethlehem. この思いは、東方で星を見たマギが、その星をたどってベツレヘムの赤ん坊イエスのいる場所までやって来たことに見られます。
This is recorded for us in Matthew 2:1-12. このことはマタイによる福音書２章１節から１２節に記されています。

For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.” 3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 Gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 They said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for this is what has been written by the prophet: 6 ‘And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the leaders of Judah; for out of you shall come forth a Ruler who will shepherd My people Israel.’” 7 Then Herod secretly called the magi and determined from them the exact time the star appeared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the Child; and when you have found Him, report to me, so that I too may come and worship Him.” 9 After hearing the king, they went their way; and the star, which they had seen in the east, went on before them until it came and stood over the place where the Child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 After coming into the house they saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they fell to the ground and worshiped Him. These magi or Wisemen, were basically astrologers. このマギ（賢者）たちは基本的に占星術師でありました。
They were from the East, which in Scripture, is the area of Mesopotamia. 彼らは東方、聖書ではメソポタミアの地域からやって来ました。
So, these were Gentile astrologers from Babylonia who arrived in Jerusalem asking, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews?”つまり彼らはバビロニアから来た異邦人の占星術師で、エルサレムにやって来て「ユダヤ人の王としてお生れになったかたは、どこにおられますか？」と尋ねたのです。
The magi were led by a star that they saw in the east, but why were they interested in this particular star and why did they follow it? マギたちは東方で見た星に導かれましたが、なぜ彼らはこの特別な星に興味を持ち、その星に従ったのでしょうか？
Although the Jews were awaiting the coming of a Messiah because of their relationship with God as His chosen people and were promised a Messiah through prophecies, how would these magi from Babylonia know anything about a Messianic concept to begin with? ユダヤ人は神に選ばれた民として、神との関係からメシアの到来を待ち望んでおり、預言によってメシアが約束されていたのですが、バビロニアからやって来たマギ達は、そもそもメシアの概念についてどのように知っていたのでしょうか？
Interestingly, of all the Old Testament prophecies of the First Coming of the Messiah, only one passage, Daniel 9:24-27, pinpointed how many years would transpire before the Messiah would come. 興味深いことに、メシアの初臨に関する旧約聖書の預言の中で、ダニエル書９章２４節から２７節はメシアが来られるまでに何年かかるかを正確に示しています。
Unlike many of the other books of Scripture, the Book of Daniel was not written in the Land of Israel, but was written in Babylonia while the Israelites lived in exile there. 他の多くの聖書の書簡とは異なり、ダニエル書はイスラエルで書かれたのではなく、イスラエル人がバビロニアに追放されている間にバビロニアで書かれました。
In fact, half of the book is not written in Hebrew, the Jewish tongue, but in Aramaic, the language of the Babylonians. 実際、ダニエル書の半分はユダヤ語であるヘブライ語ではなく、バビロニア人の言語であるアラム語で書かれています。
According to the second chapter of the Book of Daniel, Daniel became the head of the Babylonian School of Astrology. ダニエル書の第２章によると、ダニエルはバビロニア占星術学校の長になりました。
A day came when Daniel was able to save the lives of all the other Babylonian astrologers when he interpreted a dream of Nebuchadnezzar that no one else was able to. ある日、ダニエルは誰も解き明かすことができなかったネブカデネザルの夢を解き明かし、他の占星術師たちの命を救ったことがありました。
Nebuchadnezzar saw that Daniel had some unique abilities, and assumed that he was a superior astrologist, ネブカデネザルは、ダニエルがユニークな能力を持っているのを見て、彼が優れた占星術師だと思い込み、
and thus appointed him as president of the Babylonian School of Astrology (Daniel 2:48). ダニエルはバビロニア占星術学校の長に任命されたのです（ダニエル２章４８節）。
Of course, Daniel never received his information and revelation from the stars or from astrology, もちろん、ダニエルは決して星や占星術から情報や啓示を受けたのではなく、

It is possible that many of the astrologers at that time turned away from the worship of the stars and astrology, 当時の占星術師の多くが、星や占星術の崇拝から離れ、
and became believers in the God of Israel, Daniel’s God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.イスラエルの神、ダニエルの神、アブラハム、イサク、ヤコブの神を信じるようになったということはあり得る話です。
Generations later, they still had in their possession a book written by one of their former presidents, 何世代か経った後でも、彼らはかつての学長の一人が書いた本を所有しており、

Most likely when they saw an unusual brilliance in the sky, they took that to be the signal that the Messiah was born. おそらく、空に普通ではない輝きを見た時、それをメシア誕生の合図だと思ったのでしょう。
While Daniel clearly pinpointed how many years would transpire before the Messiah would appear, ダニエルは、メシアが現れるまでに何年かかるかを明確に指摘しており、
nowhere did he imply or connect the coming of the Messiah with a star or with some brilliance in the sky. メシアの到来を星や空の輝きと結びつけたり、暗示したりすることはありませんでした。
For that, there is another Babylonian connection in the story of Balaam (Numbers 22-24). それについては、バラムの物語（民数記２２-２４章）にバビロニアとの関連があります。
Yes, this is the Balaam that I spoke about a few weeks ago, and which I exhorted us to not follow his ways. そう、これは数週間前に私が話したバラムのことであり、彼のやり方に従わないようにと皆さんに勧めたものです。
It was during the time of Moses when the Israelites were wandering in the wilderness for forty years. モーセの時代、イスラエルの民が４０年間荒野をさまよっていた時のことです。
Towards the end of that time, four different times the king of Moab took Balaam upon a mountain where he could look down upon the Jewish encampment. その終わりの頃、モアブの王は４度にわたってバラムをユダヤ人の野営地を見下ろせる山に連れて行きました。
Four different times Balaam tried to open his mouth to curse the Jews. バラムは４度、口を開いてユダヤ人を呪おうとしました。
And four different times God took over his tongue, and he blessed the Jews instead. そして４度、神様がバラムの舌を支配し、代わりにユダヤ人を祝福しました。
In these blessings, he issued several Messianic prophecies, and one of them is found in Numbers 24:17. これらの祝福の中で、彼はいくつかのメシア預言を発しましたが、その一つが民数記２４章１７節に記されています。民数記２４章１７節

The word scepter is a symbol of kingship, and it was Balaam who connected the Messianic Person with kingship and with a star. 杖という言葉は王権の象徴であり、メシアの人物を王権と星に結びつけたのはバラムだったのです。
By profession, Balaam was an astrologer.バラムは占星術師でした。
According to Numbers 22:5 and Deuteronomy 23:4, Balaam was from Pethor, which was also in Babylonia. 民数記２２章５節と申命記２３章４節によれば、バラムもバビロニアにあったペトホルの出身でした。
As a result of the Balaam connection regarding the star and the Kingship of the Messiah, as well as the Daniel connection which provided the Messianic timetable, 星とメシアの王権に関するバラムのつながりと、メシアの時刻表を提供したダニエルのつながりの結果、
the magi from Babylonia knew about the coming of the Messiah. バビロニアから来たマギたちはメシアの到来を知っていたのです。
So, when the magi saw the unusual star in the sky, they took that to be the signal that the Messiah was born, and decided to follow it. そのため、空で珍しい星を見たマギたちは、それをメシア誕生の合図と受け止め、それに従うことにしたのです。
There are five particular things to note about this “star”. この「星」について、特に注意すべき点が５つあります。
First of all, this star is referred to by the pronoun, “His,” that is the Messiah’s star (Matthew 2:2). まず第一に、この星は「彼の」という代名詞で呼ばれており、それはメシアの星です（マタイ２章２節）。
Secondly, this star appeared and disappeared on two or more occasions. 第二に、この星は二度以上現れては消えました。
Thirdly, this star moved from east to west. 第三に、この星は東から西に動きました。
Fourthly, this star moved from north to south. 第四に、この星は北から南に動きました。
Lastly, this star literally came down to Bethlehem and hovered over one particular house in the town of Bethlehem (Matthew 2:9). 最後に、この星は文字通りベツレヘムに来て、ベツレヘムの町のある特定の家の上にとどまりました（マタイ２章９節）。
Thus, it did not behave like any ordinary star. そのために普通の星のようなふるまいをしませんでした。
The root for the Greek word for star means “radiant” or “brilliant.” ギリシャ語の星の語源は、「輝き 」や 「光輝」を意味します。
This “brilliance” is what is known as the Shechinah Glory. この 「輝き 」こそが、シャカイナの栄光として知られているものなのです。
Thus, just as the Shechinah Glory was used to announce the birth of the Messiah to Jewish shepherds, このように、シャカイナの輝きがユダヤの羊飼いたちにメシアの誕生を告げるために使われたように、
it was also used to announce the birth of the King of the Jews to the magi. ユダヤの王の誕生をマギたちに告げるためにも使われたのです。
That is why when they arrived in Jerusalem, the Jewish capital, ですから彼らがユダヤ人の首都であるエルサレムに到着した時に、
they asked the question, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews?” 彼らは「ユダヤ人の王としてお生れになったかたは、どこにおられますか」と尋ねたのです。
Although they had the Book of Daniel, they did not have the Book of Michah. 彼らはダニエル書を持っていましたが、ミカ書は持っていませんでした。
It was Micah who prophesied the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem (Micah 5:2). メシアがベツレヘムで生まれると預言したのはミカでした（ミカ５章２節）。
Having learned that information, the magi headed for Bethlehem. その情報を知ったマギたちはベツレヘムに向かいました。
But because there were many houses in Bethlehem, and many children two-years-old and younger, it would have been very difficult for them to find this Child. しかし、ベツレヘムには多くの家があり、２歳以下の子供も大勢いたため、彼らがこの幼子を見つけるのはとても難しかったことでしょう。
At this point, the star they had seen earlier reappeared, came down and hovered over the specific house where the young child was (Matthew 2:9). その時、羊飼いたちが以前に見た星が再び現れ、降りてきて、幼子がいる特定の家の上に止まったのです（マタイ２章９節）。
Jesus’ family was no longer in a stable where the shepherds had found them, but were now in a private home. イエス様の家族は、羊飼いたちが見つけた馬小屋ではなく、今は普通の個人の家にいました。
This was nearly two years after the shepherds had visited Jesus in the stable. 羊飼いたちがイエス様を馬小屋に訪ねてから２年近くも経っていました。
When the magi saw Jesus, they worshiped Him. イエス様を見たマギ達はイエス様を礼拝しました。
As glorious and wonderful the star was and the angel’s appearing was, nothing compares to the glory and wonder of Jesus. 星の輝きや天使の出現も素晴らしいものでしたが、イエス様の栄光と素晴らしさに匹敵するものはありません。
And as already mentioned, all things on that first Christmas day pointed to Jesus’ coming into this world as a human being. そして、すでに述べたように、その最初のクリスマスの日の全てのことは、イエス様が人間としてこの世に来られたことを指し示していました。
God became man! That is what happened on that day! 神が人となられた！ それがその日に起こったことなのです！
The Son of God left the glory and comfort of heaven to become a humble infant born of a virgin through the powerful and wonderous work of the Holy Spirit. 神の御子は、天国の栄光と安らぎを離れ、聖霊の力強い、驚くべき働きによって、処女から生まれた謙遜な幼子となられたのです。
And Jesus coming into this world on that particular day over 2000 years ago in Bethlehem, brought the greatest light into this world. そして２０００年以上前のあの日、ベツレヘムでこの世に来られたイエス様は、この世に最大の光をもたらしました。
A light brighter and greater than the star and at the angel’s appearing. 星よりも、天使が現れた時よりも、明るく偉大な光。
The Shechinah Glory reappeared in a completely new form through the coming of the Messiah. シャカイナの栄光は、メシアの到来によってまったく新しい形で再び現れたのです。
The apostle John wrote of this as He described the significance of Jesus’ coming into this world. 使徒ヨハネは、イエス様がこの世に来られたことの意味をこう記しています。

This passage proclaims the coming of God’s glorious Light in a new, visible manifestation. この箇所は、神の栄光ある光が、目に見える新たな姿で現れることを宣言しています。
The Word, that in verse 1 was in the beginning with God—always was with God, and always was God—at a certain point in human history, took on visible form. 1節にあるように、初めから神と共にあり、神であった言葉は、人類の歴史のある時点で、目に見える形をとりました。
But this time He did not come in the form of a light, fire, or cloud; rather, He came in the form of flesh. しかし今回は、光や火や雲の形ではなく、むしろ肉の形で来られました。
He became human, and Jesus, as a man, was the visible manifestation of God’s presence. イエス様は人となり、人として、神の現存を目に見える形で現されたのです。
The fact that Jesus was the Shechinah Glory light is briefly described in John 1:4-10. イエス様がシャカイナの栄光の光であったことは、ヨハネによる福音書１章４節から１０節にに簡潔に記されています。
With these words, John emphasized that Jesus was that new Shechinah Glory light. ヨハネはこの言葉で、イエス様がその新しいシャカイナの栄光の光であることを強調しました。
He is the source of life and He is the source of light for all people because He is the creator of us all. 主は命の源であり、私達すべての創造主であるゆえに、すべての人々にとっての光の源なのです。
Verse 14 focuses on the new form of the manifestation of God’s glorious presence. １４節では、神の栄光の現存の新しい形に焦点が当てられています。

And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. そして言は肉体となり、わたしたちのうちに宿った。わたしたちはその栄光を見た。それは父のひとり子としての栄光であって、めぐみとまこととに満ちていた。
Verse 14 says, “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” １４節は「そして言は肉体となり、わたしたちのうちに宿った」と言います。
Thus, God’s glorious presence came in a more permanent form in the person of the Messiah, こうして、神の栄光の臨在は、メシアという人において、
and abided with Israel for an extended period of time until His ascension back to heaven.より永続的な形で現れ、天に昇られるまで、長期にわたってイスラエルと共にとどまったのです。
Indeed, Jesus graced this world with God’s glory as He lived and ministered throughout His 33 plus years upon this earth. 実際、イエス様はこの地上におられた３３年余りの間、神の栄光でこの世に恵みをたらし、宣教されました。
And it was just outside of Jerusalem that He died and was resurrected, as well as ascended back to heaven from the Mount of Olives. そして、イエス様はエルサレムの郊外で死なれ、復活され、オリーブ山から天に昇られました。
Yes indeed, Jesus is the promised Christ (Messiah) who is “Immanuel,” which translated means, “God with us” (Matthew 1:23). そう、実にイエス様は約束されたキリスト（メシア）であり、「インマヌエル」、直訳すれば「私たちと共におられる神」（マタイ１章２３節）なのです。
Sadly, as indicated in the passage in John 1 that we just read, not everyone, not even the Jews who lived during Jesus’ time, knew or received Him, that is place their faith in Him. 悲しいことに、今読んだヨハネによる福音書1章の一節に示されているように、イエスの時代に生きていたユダヤ人たちでさえも、誰もがイエスを知っていたわけではなく、イエスを受け入れていたわけでもなかったのです。

Not many Jews at that time received Jesus in faith but instead rejected Him. 当時、イエス様を、信仰をもって受け入れたユダヤ人は多くはなく、むしろ拒絶しました。
But what was true for the people back then and for us today is this promise: しかし、当時の人々にとっても、今日の私達にとっても真実であったのは、この約束です：
“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name” 「しかし、彼を受けいれた者、すなわち、その名を信じた人々には、彼は神の子となる力を与えたのである」。
Jesus is the Light of the world! イエス様は世の光です！
When we behold Jesus, we are indeed filled with wonder and delight. イエス様を見る時、私達は確かに驚きと喜びに満たされます。
Listen to what Jesus said regarding Himself and the invitation that He gives to us all. イエス様が御自身について、また私達すべてに与えてくださる招きについて語られたことに耳を傾けてください。
John 8:12（ヨハネの福音書８章１２節）
Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.” イエスは、また人々に語ってこう言われた、「わたしは世の光である。わたしに従って来る者は、やみのうちを歩くことがなく、命の光をもつであろう」。
Let us come and adore Jesus, God incarnate! 神の受肉であるイエス様を崇めましょう！
Let us bathe ourselves in His wonderous and glorious Light! イエス様の驚くべき栄光の光を浴びましょう！
Let us truly take delight in Him! イエス様を心から喜びましょう！
Let us worship Jesus Christ, the Son of God, our Savior and King! 神の御子、私たちの救い主であり、王であるイエス・キリストを礼拝しましょう！
