神様はハンナの子を授かる祈りに応え、ハンナは誓いの通り、サムエルを神様に仕え

そこで、サムエルは乳離れした後、シロの主の家にいる祭司エリのもとに連れて行かれ、そこで仕えました。エルカナはレビ人であり、コハテの子孫でしたが、アロン系ではありませんでした（歴代志上６章２６節、３３節）。ですからレビ人であるサムエルが主の家に仕えることは珍しいことではありませんでした。サムエルがどのように士師、祭司、預言者として奉仕されたのかを見ていきましょう（本多）。

Samuel: Judge, Priest, and Prophet
サムエル：士師、司祭、預言者

This morning, we will look at Samuel, who was the last judge of Israel. 今朝は、イスラエルの最後の士師であったサムエルについて見ていきましょう。
As we saw last week, Samuel was born to Elkanah and Hannah, after his mother Hannah had prayed to have a child for many years. 先週、見ましたように、サムエルはエルカナとハンナの間に生まれました。
God answered Hannah’s prayer, and as Hannah vowed, she dedicated Samuel to serve God. 神様はハンナの祈りに応え、ハンナは誓いの通り、サムエルを神様に仕えるために捧げました。
So, after Samuel was weaned, he was brought to Eli the priest in the house of the Lord in Shiloh to serve there. そこで、サムエルは乳離れした後、シロの主の家にいる祭司エリのもとに連れて行かれ、そこで仕えました。
By lineage Elkanah was a Levite, a descendant of Kohath but not of the Aaronic line (1 Chronicles 6:26, 33). エルカナはレビ人であり、コハテの子孫でしたが、アロン系ではありませんでした（歴代志上６章２６節、３３節）。
So, it would not have been unusual for Samuel, a Levite, to serve in the house of the Lord. ですからレビ人であるサムエルが主の家に仕えることは珍しいことではありませんでした。
This morning, we will look at Samuel, who ministered as a judge, priest, and prophet. 今朝は士師、祭司、預言者として奉仕したサムエルについて見ていきましょう。
Samuel’s name means “heard of God” or “asked of God” which can be seen in Hannah’s statement concerning the naming of Samuel. サムエルの名は「神に聞いた」、「神に尋ねた」という意味であり、それはサムエルの命名に関するハンナの発言に見ることができます。
1 Samuel 1:20
It came about in due time, after Hannah had conceived, that she gave birth to a son; and she named him Samuel, saying, “Because I have asked him of the Lord.” 彼女はみごもり、その時が巡ってきて、男の子を産み、「わたしがこの子を主に求めたからだ」といって、その名をサムエルと名づけた。
There is no doubt that God had heard Hannah’s prayer and gave to her Samuel, 神様がハンナの祈りを聞かれ、サムエルをハンナにお与えになったことは間違いなく、
so that in turn he could be given back to God to be used for His glory. ですから彼は神の栄光のために用いられるために神に返されるのです。
Samuel came from a godly home. サムエルは神に仕える家の生まれでした。
His parents were God-fearing Israelites who annually went to Shiloh to worship at the tabernacle. 彼の両親は神を敬うイスラエル人で、毎年シロに行き幕屋で礼拝していました。
Sadly though, as Pastor Okura pointed out last Sunday, the tabernacle environment was not godly. しかし、悲しいことに、先週の日曜日に大倉牧師が指摘したように、幕屋の環境は神的ではありませんでした。
Eli, though being the high priest in Israel, had failed to teach his sons the fear of God according to what is written in the Book of Deuteronomy. エリはイスラエルの大祭司でありながら、申命記に書かれているように、息子たちに神を畏れることを教えませんでした。
So, his sons Hophni and Phinehas did not show respect for their father and did not revere God in their responsibilities as priests. そのため、息子のホフニとピネハスは父に敬意を示さず、祭司としての責任において神様を敬いませんでした。
Thus, their wicked acts eventually brought God’s judgment upon Eli’s family. こうして、彼らの邪悪な行為は、最終的にエリの家族に神の裁きをもたらしました。
It was in this environment at the tabernacle in Shiloh, the child Samuel grew to young manhood. このようなシロの幕屋の環境の中で、幼いサムエルは青年に成長しました。
It was in the midst of such an environment that God’s calling came to Samuel. そのような環境の中で、サムエルに神の召しが下りました。
How that calling came to Samuel is recorded for us in 1 Samuel 3. その召命がサムエルにどのように与えられたかは、サムエル記上３章に記されています。
1 Samuel 3:1-9
1Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the Lord before Eli. And word from the Lord was rare in those days, visions were infrequent. 2It happened at that time as Eli was lying down in his place (now his eyesight had begun to grow dim and he could not see well), 3and the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the Lord where the ark of God was, 4that the Lord called Samuel; and he said, “Here I am.” 5Then he ran to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he said, “I did not call, lie down again.” So he went and lay down. 6The Lord called yet again, “Samuel!” So Samuel arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” But he answered, “I did not call, my son, lie down again.” 7Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord, nor had the word of the Lord yet been revealed to him. 8So the Lord called Samuel again for the third time. And he arose and went to Eli and said, “Here I am, for you called me.” Then Eli discerned that the Lord was calling the boy. 9And Eli said to Samuel, “Go lie down, and it shall be if He calls you, that you shall say, ‘Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. 1わらべサムエルは、エリの前で、主に仕えていた。そのころ、主の言葉はまれで、黙示も常ではなかった。2さてエリは、しだいに目がかすんで、見ることができなくなり、そのとき自分のへやで寝ていた。3神のともしびはまだ消えず、サムエルが神の箱のある主の神殿に寝ていた時、4主は「サムエルよ、サムエルよ」と呼ばれた。彼は「はい、ここにおります」と言って、5エリの所へ走っていって言った、「あなたがお呼びになりました。わたしは、ここにおります」。しかしエリは言った、「わたしは呼ばない。帰って寝なさい」。彼は行って寝た。6主はまたかさねて「サムエルよ、サムエルよ」と呼ばれた。サムエルは起きてエリのもとへ行って言った、「あなたがお呼びになりました。わたしは、ここにおります」。エリは言った、「子よ、わたしは呼ばない。もう一度寝なさい」。7サムエルはまだ主を知らず、主の言葉がまだ彼に現されなかった。8主はまた三度目にサムエルを呼ばれたので、サムエルは起きてエリのもとへ行って言った、「あなたがお呼びになりました。わたしは、ここにおります」。その時、エリは主がわらべを呼ばれたのであることを悟った。9そしてエリはサムエルに言った、「行って寝なさい。もしあなたを呼ばれたら、『しもべは聞きます。主よ、お話しください』と言いなさい」。サムエルは行って自分の所で寝た。
The spiritually dark conditions of that time are highlighted by what is written in 1 Samuel 3:1. 当時の霊的に暗い状況は、サムエル記上３章１節に書かれていることで強調されます。
“And word from the Lord was rare in those days, visions were infrequent.” 「そのころ、主からの言葉はまれで、黙示も常ではなかった」
This is further highlighted by the fact that it took three times for the priest Eli to discern that it was God that was calling Samuel. このことは、祭司エリがサムエルを呼んでいるのが神であることを見分けるのに３回もかかったという事実によってさらに強調されています。
However, Eli had enough spiritual perception to advise Samuel on how he should respond to God when He called him. しかし、エリはサムエルが神に呼ばれた時にどう答えるべきかを助言できるだけの霊的知覚を持っていました。
So, Samuel goes back to his place and lies down to sleep. そこで、サムエルは自分の場所に戻り、横になって眠りました。
1 Samuel 3:10-15
10Then the Lord came and stood and called as at other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” And Samuel said, “Speak, for Your servant is listening.” 11The Lord said to Samuel, “Behold, I am about to do a thing in Israel at which both ears of everyone who hears it will tingle. 12In that day I will carry out against Eli all that I have spoken concerning his house, from beginning to end. 13For I have told him that I am about to judge his house forever for the iniquity which he knew, because his sons brought a curse on them-selves and he did not rebuke them. 14Therefore I have sworn to the house of Eli that the iniquity of Eli’s house shall not be atoned for by sacrifice or offering forever.” 15So Samuel lay down until morning. Then he opened the doors of the house of the Lord. But Samuel was afraid to tell the vision to Eli. 10主はきて立ち、前のように、「サムエルよ、サムエルよ」と呼ばれたので、サムエルは言った、「しもべは聞きます。お話しください」。11その時、主はサムエルに言われた、「見よ、わたしはイスラエルのうちに一つの事をする。それを聞く者はみな、耳が二つとも鳴るであろう。12その日には、わたしが、かつてエリの家について話したことを、はじめから終りまでことごとく、エリに行うであろう。13わたしはエリに、彼が知っている悪事のゆえに、その家を永久に罰することを告げる。その子らが神をけがしているのに、彼がそれをとめなかったからである。14それゆえ、わたしはエリの家に誓う。エリの家の悪は、犠牲や供え物をもってしても、永久にあがなわれないであろう」。15サムエルは朝まで寝て、主の宮の戸をあけたが、サムエルはその幻のことをエリに語るのを恐れた。
We see that God called Samuel once again, and this time, he responded in the manner that Eli had advised him. 神様はサムエルを再び呼び、今度はエリの忠告に従いました。
When he did, he became the recipient of God’s message of judgment upon the house of Eli.こうして彼は、エリの家に対する神様の裁きのメッセージを受け取る者となりました。
How difficult that must have been for Samuel to hear.サムエルにとって、それはどれほど辛いことであったでしょうか。
At the same time, it must have made Samuel truly fear God and to take to heart the seriousness of serving the Lord humbly and wholeheartedly as a priest. それと同時に、このことはサムエルに神を心から畏れ、祭司として謙虚に心から主に仕えることの重大さを心に刻ませたに違いありません。
He must have gone about his morning duties with diligence that following day. その翌日、彼は朝の務めを熱心に行ったに違いありません。
He must have also tried to avoid seeing Eli because of what he had heard from God. また、神様から聞いた話のために、エリに会わないようにしたに違いありません。
No one likes to be the bearer of bad news, and especially not to someone close to you. 誰だって悪い知らせを伝えるのは嫌なもので、特に親しい人には嫌なものです。
But Eli excited about a word from the Lord coming to Samuel, comes looking for him. しかしエリは、主からの言葉がサムエルに届いたことに興奮し、彼を探しに来ました。
1 Samuel 3:16-18
16Then Eli called Samuel and said, “Samuel, my son.” And he said, “Here I am.” 17He said, “What is the word that He spoke to you? Please do not hide it from me. May God do so to you, and more also, if you hide anything from me of all the words that He spoke to you.” 18So Samuel told him everything and hid nothing from him. And he said, “It is the Lord; let Him do what seems good to Him.” 16しかしエリはサムエルを呼んで言った、「わが子サムエルよ」。サムエルは言った、「はい、ここにおります」。17エリは言った、「何事をお告げになったのか。隠さず話してください。もしお告げになったことを一つでも隠して、わたしに言わないならば、どうぞ神があなたを罰し、さらに重く罰せられるように」。18そこでサムエルは、その事をことごとく話して、何も彼に隠さなかった。エリは言った、「それは主である。どうぞ主が、良いと思うことを行われるように」。
Pressed by Eli, Samuel as a spokesman for God shared with Eli how God will deal with the iniquity of Eli’s priestly family. エリに迫られたサムエルは、神様の代弁者として、神様がエリの祭司一族の罪にどのように対処されるか、エリに伝えました。
In hearing God’s words of judgement, Eli understood that nothing could be done to purge the iniquity of his house. 神様の裁きの言葉を聞いて、エリは自分の家の罪をきよめるためには何もできないことを理解しました。
Thus, he could only respond, “It is the Lord; let Him do what seems good to Him.” そこで彼は「それは主である。どうぞ主が、良いと思うことを行われるように」と答えるしかありませんでした。
This was not the last time that God called Samuel to speak to him. 神様がサムエルに語りかけたのは、これが最後ではありませんでした。
For after that, God would speak with Samuel regularly, making him a prophet who proclaims His words to the Israelites. その後、神様は定期的にサムエルに語りかけ、彼をイスラエルの民に神の言葉を告げる預言者とされたからです。
And because Samuel faithfully proclaimed the words of God that were given to him to speak, none of his words failed. そして、サムエルは語るようにと与えられた神様の言葉を忠実に宣べ伝えたので、彼のどの言葉も、しくじることはありませんでした。
1 Samuel 3:19-21
19Thus Samuel grew and the Lord was with him and let none of his words fail. 20All Israel from Dan even to Beersheba knew that Samuel was confirmed as a prophet of the Lord. 21And the Lord appeared again at Shiloh, because the Lord revealed Himself to Samuel at Shiloh by the word of the Lord. 19サムエルは育っていった。主が彼と共におられて、その言葉を一つも地に落ちないようにされたので、20ダンからベエルシバまで、イスラエルのすべての人は、サムエルが主の預言者と定められたことを知った。21主はふたたびシロで現れられた。すなわち主はシロで、主の言葉によって、サムエルに自らを現された。こうしてサムエルの言葉は、あまねくイスラエルの人々に及んだ。
God changed the spiritual climate of Israel through Samuel who He had called to be a prophet. 神様は預言者として召されたサムエルを通してイスラエルの霊的風土を変えました。
And God revealed Himself through the words that He spoke through Samuel. そして神様はサムエルを通して語られた言葉を通してご自身を現されました。
Sadly though, the Israelites did not truly trust in and obey God. しかし悲しいことに、イスラエルの民は神様に心から信頼し、従うことはありませんでした。
When they went out to battle their enemies the Philistines, they mistakenly put their trust in the ark of the covenant rather than in God Himself. 敵であるペリシテ人との戦いに出かけた時、彼らは神様ご自身ではなく、契約の箱に誤って信頼を置いてしまったのです。
We see who was involved with this misuse of the ark of the covenant as we read 1 Samuel 4:1-4. サムエル記上４章１節から４節を読むと、この契約の箱の誤用に誰が関わっていたのかが分かります。
1 Samuel 4:1-4
1Thus the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out to meet the Philistines in battle and camped beside Ebenezer while the Philistines camped in Aphek. 2 The Philistines drew up in battle array to meet Israel. When the battle spread, Israel was defeated before the Philistines who killed about four thousand men on the battlefield. 3 When the people came into the camp, the elders of Israel said, “Why has the Lord defeated us today before the Philistines? Let us take to ourselves from Shiloh the ark of the covenant of the Lord, that it may come among us and deliver us from the power of our enemies.” 4 So the people sent to Shiloh, and from there they carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord of hosts who sits above the cherubim; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God. 1イスラエルびとは出てペリシテびとと戦おうとして、エベネゼルのほとりに陣をしき、ペリシテびとはアペクに陣をしいた。2ペリシテびとはイスラエルびとにむかって陣備えをしたが、戦うに及んで、イスラエルびとはペリシテびとの前に敗れ、ペリシテびとは戦場において、おおよそ四千人を殺した。 3民が陣営に退いた時、イスラエルの長老たちは言った、「なにゆえ、主はきょう、ペリシテびとの前にわれわれを敗られたのか。シロへ行って主の契約の箱をここへ携えてくることにしよう。そして主をわれわれのうちに迎えて、敵の手から救っていただこう」。4そこで民は人をシロにつかわし、ケルビムの上に座しておられる万軍の主の契約の箱を、そこから携えてこさせた。その時エリのふたりの子、ホフニとピネハスは神の契約の箱と共に、その所にいた。
Yes, we see that Eli’s two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were with the ark of the covenant. そう、エリの二人の息子、ホフニとピネハスが契約の箱と共にいたのです。
What happens next is that the presence of the ark of the covenant in the camp of Israel 次に起こることは、契約の箱がイスラエルの陣営にあることで、
causes fear in the Philistines, because they too mistook the ark of the covenant to be God (1 Samuel 4:7). ペリシテ人に恐れを抱かせ、彼らも契約の箱を神だと勘違いしたことです（サムエル記上４章７節）。
But the Philistines managed to muster courage to fight and Israel was defeated.
しかし、ペリシテ人は勇気を振り絞って戦い、イスラエルは敗北しました。
In the aftermath, the ark of the covenant was taken by the Philistines, and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, died (1 Samuel 4:11). その結果、契約の箱はペリシテ人に奪われ、エリの二人の息子ホフニとピネハスは死にました（サムエル記上４章１１節）。
Then, when Eli heard the news that his two sons had died, and in particular that the ark of the covenant had been taken, そして、二人の息子が死に、特に契約の箱が奪われたという知らせを聞いたエリは、
he fell off the seat backward, broke his neck and died (1 Samuel 4:18). 後ろ向きに座から落ち、首を折って死にました（サムエル記上4:18）。
In that same verse, it mentions, “Thus he judged Israel forty years.” 同じ節に「こうして彼は４０年間イスラエルを裁いた」とあります。
Thus, God’s promised judgment upon Eli and his two sons for their iniquities came to pass. こうして、エリとその二人の息子の罪に対する神の約束の裁きが実現しました。
Because of time, I will not go into the details of what happened to the ark of the covenant in the hands of the Philistines. 時間の関係で、ペリシテ人の手に渡った契約の箱がどうなったかについては詳しく触れません。
I hope you will take the time to read 1 Samuel 5 and 6. サムエル記上５章と６章をじっくり読んでいただきたいと思います。
It is quite humorous how God deals with the Philistines and their god Dagon. 神様がペリシテ人とその神ダゴンをどのように扱われたかは、非常にユーモラスです。
After Eli’s death, Samuel served as the last judge of Israel. エリの死後、サムエルはイスラエルの最後の士師を務めました。
We see Samuel’s work as a judge recorded in 1 Samuel 7. サムエル記上７章には、サムエルの士師としての働きが記録されています。
1 Samuel 7:1-6
1And the men of Kiriath-jearim came and took the ark of the Lord and brought it into the house of Abinadab on the hill, and consecrated Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the Lord. 2From the day that the ark remained at Kiriath-jearim, the time was long, for it was twenty years; and all the house of Israel lamented after the Lord. 3Then Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, “If you return to the Lord with all your heart, remove the foreign gods and the Ashtaroth from among you and direct your hearts to the Lord and serve Him alone; and He will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines.” 4So the sons of Israel removed the Baals and the Ashtaroth and served the Lord alone. 5Then Samuel said, “Gather all Israel to Mizpah and I will pray to the Lord for you.” 6They gathered to Mizpah, and drew water and poured it out before the Lord, and fasted on that day and said there, “We have sinned against the Lord.” And Samuel judged the sons of Israel at Mizpah. 1キリアテ・ヤリムの人々は、きて、主の箱を携え上り、丘の上のアビナダブの家に持ってきて、その子エレアザルを聖別して、主の箱を守らせた。2その箱は久しくキリアテ・ヤリムにとどまって、二十年を経た。イスラエルの全家は主を慕って嘆いた。3その時サムエルはイスラエルの全家に告げていった、「もし、あなたがたが一心に主に立ち返るのであれば、ほかの神々とアシタロテを、あなたがたのうちから捨て去り、心を主に向け、主にのみ仕えなければならない。そうすれば、主はあなたがたをペリシテびとの手から救い出されるであろう」。4そこでイスラエルの人々はバアルとアシタロテを捨て去り、ただ主にのみ仕えた。5サムエルはまた言った、「イスラエルびとを、ことごとくミヅパに集めなさい。わたしはあなたがたのために主に祈りましょう」。6人々はミヅパに集まり、水をくんでそれを主の前に注ぎ、その日、断食してその所で言った、「われわれは主に対して罪を犯した」。サムエルはミヅパでイスラエルの人々をさばいた。
We see how Samuel served as a judge of Israel. 私たちは、サムエルがイスラエルの士師としてどのように仕えたかを見ています。
One of the key responsibilities of a judge appointed by God was to make things right. 神様に任命された士師の重要な責務の一つは、物事を正すことです。
As we have seen in the work of Deborah and Gideon as judges, and we will also see in the work of Jephthah and Samson in the coming weeks, デボラとギデオンの士師としての働きを見てきたように、またエフタとサムソンの働きをこれから見ていくように、
God used these judges to restore Israel back to God. 神様はイスラエルを神のもとに回復させるためにこれらの士師を用いられました。
Often times, the judge worked to deliver the Israelites from a pagan enemy nation that was oppressing them. 多くの場合、士師はイスラエルの民を圧迫していた異教の敵国から解放するためにはたらきました。
However, more importantly, their work was to restore the Israelites back to a right relationship with God. しかし、それ以上に重要なのは、イスラエルの民を神との正しい関係に回復させることでした。
Thus, along with the deliverance from oppression, was a spiritual revival that took place among the people of Israel したがって、圧政からの解放とともに、イスラエルの民の間に起こった霊的なリバイバルは、
that entailed repentance and a return back to keeping God’s commandments. 悔い改めと神の戒めを守ることへの回帰を伴うものでした。
Thus, we clearly see in Samuel’s ministry as a judge of this aspect of making things right. このように、サムエルの士師としてのはたらきには、物事を正すという側面がはっきりと見られます。
1 Samuel 7:3
Then Samuel spoke to all the house of Israel, saying, “If you return to the Lord with all your heart, remove the foreign gods and the Ashtaroth from among you and direct your hearts to the Lord and serve Him alone; and He will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines.” その時サムエルはイスラエルの全家に告げていった、「もし、あなたがたが一心に主に立ち返るのであれば、ほかの神々とアシタロテを、あなたがたのうちから捨て去り、心を主に向け、主にのみ仕えなければならない。そうすれば、主はあなたがたをペリシテびとの手から救い出されるであろう」。
Because the Israelites heeded these words of Samuel, God defeated the Philistines. イスラエルの民がサムエルのこの言葉に耳を傾けたので、神様はペリシテ人を打ち破られました。
So, we see that God changed the spiritual climate of Israel through Samuel who He had also called to be a judge. つまり、神様が士師として召されたサムエルを通して、イスラエルの霊的風潮を変えたのです。
We can see how God blessed Israel through Samuel’s ministry as a judge in the following verses. サムエルの士師としてのはたらきを通して、神様がどのようにイスラエルを祝福されたかは、次の箇所で見ることができます。
1 Samuel 7:13-17
13So the Philistines were subdued and they did not come anymore within the border of Israel. And the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel. 14The cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even to Gath; and Israel delivered their territory from the hand of the Philistines. So there was peace between Israel and the Amorites. 15Now Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life. 16He used to go annually on circuit to Bethel and Gilgal and Mizpah, and he judged Israel in all these places. 17Then his return was to Ramah, for his house was there, and there he judged Israel; and he built there an altar to the Lord. 13こうしてペリシテびとは征服され、ふたたびイスラエルの領地に、はいらなかった。サムエルの一生の間、主の手が、ペリシテびとを防いだ。14ペリシテびとがイスラエルから取った町々は、エクロンからガテまで、イスラエルにかえり、イスラエルはその周囲の地をもペリシテびとの手から取りかえした。またイスラエルとアモリびととの間には平和があった。15サムエルは一生の間イスラエルをさばいた。16年ごとにサムエルはベテルとギルガル、およびミヅパを巡って、その所々でイスラエルをさばき、17ラマに帰った。そこに彼の家があったからである。その所でも彼はイスラエルをさばき、またそこで主に祭壇を築いた。
As I have mentioned twice already in this message, Samuel was the last judge of Israel. このメッセージですでに二度述べたように、サムエルはイスラエルの最後の士師でした。
This was because toward the end of Samuel’s life, the elders of Israel asked for a king to be appointed to rule over them. それは、サムエルの生涯の終わりに、イスラエルの長老達が自分たちを治める王を任命するよう求めたからです。
We see this matter recorded for us in 1 Samuel 8. このことはサムエル記上８章に記されています。
1 Samuel 8:1-5
1And it came about when Samuel was old that he appointed his sons judges over Israel. 2Now the name of his firstborn was Joel, and the name of his second, Abijah; they were judging in Beersheba. 3His sons, however, did not walk in his ways, but turned aside after dishonest gain and took bribes and perverted justice. 4Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah; 5and they said to him, “Behold, you have grown old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now appoint a king for us to judge us like all the nations.” 1サムエルは年老いて、その子らをイスラエルのさばきづかさとした。2長子の名はヨエルといい、次の子の名はアビヤと言った。彼らはベエルシバでさばきづかさであった。3しかしその子らは父の道を歩まないで、利にむかい、まいないを取って、さばきを曲げた。4この時、イスラエルの長老たちはみな集まってラマにおるサムエルのもとにきて、5言った、「あなたは年老い、あなたの子たちはあなたの道を歩まない。今ほかの国々のように、われわれをさばく王を、われわれのために立ててください」。
When the elders of Israel came to Samuel with their request for a king, they gave two reasons for their petition. イスラエルの長老達がサムエルに王を求めたとき、彼らは二つの理由を述べました。
Their first reason was that Samuel’s two sons who he had delegated authority to were not walking rightly before God as Samuel did. 第一の理由は、サムエルが権威を委ねていた二人の息子達が、サムエルのように神様の前に正しく歩んでいなかったからです。
It is clearly noted in these verses that Samuel’s sons, “turned aside after dishonest gain and took bribes and perverted justice.” (1 Samuel 8:3) サムエルの息子達は「不正な利益に向かい、賄賂を取り、正義を曲げた」と、この聖句にはっきりと記されています(サムエル記上８章３節)
Thus, the disappointment that the elders felt regarding this were merited. したがって、このことに関して長老たちが感じた失望は当然のものでした。
The second reason that the elders of Israel gave for wanting a king was that they wanted to be like other nations by having a king. イスラエルの長老達が王を望んだ第二の理由は、王を持つことによって他の国々のようになりたかったからです。
Samuel’s feelings regarding this request and his coming before God in prayer regarding this matter are recorded for us in the following verses. この要請に対するサムエルの気持ちと、この件に関して彼が神様の前に出て祈ったことは、次の節に記されています。
1 Samuel 8:6-10
6But the thing was displeasing in the sight of Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” And Samuel prayed to the Lord. 7The Lord said to Samuel, “Listen to the voice of the people in regard to all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me from being king over them. 8Like all the deeds which they have done since the day that I brought them up from Egypt even to this day—in that they have forsaken Me and served other gods—so they are doing to you also. 9Now then, listen to their voice; however, you shall solemnly warn them and tell them of the procedure of the king who will reign over them.” 10So Samuel spoke all the words of the Lord to the people who had asked of him a king. 6しかし彼らが、「われわれをさばく王を、われわれに与えよ」と言うのを聞いて、サムエルは喜ばなかった。そしてサムエルが主に祈ると、7主はサムエルに言われた、「民が、すべてあなたに言う所の声に聞き従いなさい。彼らが捨てるのはあなたではなく、わたしを捨てて、彼らの上にわたしが王であることを認めないのである。8彼らは、わたしがエジプトから連れ上った日から、きょうまで、わたしを捨ててほかの神々に仕え、さまざまの事をわたしにしたように、あなたにもしているのである。9今その声に聞き従いなさい。ただし、深く彼らを戒めて、彼らを治める王のならわしを彼らに示さなければならない」。10サムエルは王を立てることを求める民に主の言葉をことごとく告げて、
We see that Samuel was greatly disturbed by the request for a king. サムエルは、王を求めることに大いに心を痛めていたことが分かります。
As he prayed to God regarding the matter, Samuel must have been comforted by God’s response and the fact that God was not pleased about the matter as well. サムエルは、この問題について神様に祈ったとき、神様の答えと、神様がこのことを喜ばれていないという事実に慰められたに違いありません。
He was assured that this was God’s permissive will, at the same time, he was told to outline the responsibilities the Israelites would assume under a king. 彼は、それは神様の寛容な御心であることを確信し、同時に、イスラエルの民が王の下で負うことになる責任について概説するように言われました。
Thus, reluctantly, Samuel consented to their plea for a king. こうして、サムエルはしぶしぶ、王を求める彼らの嘆願に同意しました。
Or more accurately, God consented to their plea for a king. より正確には、神様が王を求める彼らの願いを受け入れたのです。
So, having explained the responsibilities the Israelites would assume under a king, Samuel proceeded to anoint the first two kings of Israel. そこでサムエルは、イスラエルの民が王の下で負う責任を説明し、イスラエルの最初の二人の王に油を注ぎました。
We will look at both of those kings, Saul and David, next month. 来月は、その二人の王、サウルとダビデについて見てみましょう。
So, as a prophet and priest and judge of Israel, Samuel was divinely commissioned to anoint Saul as king (1 Samuel 10:1). そこで、サムエルはイスラエルの預言者、祭司、士師として、サウルに王の油を注ぐよう神様から命じられました（サムエル記上１０章１節）。
And then later on, Samuel was divinely commissioned to offer sacrifice in Bethlehem そしてその後、サムエルはベツレヘムで生贄を捧げ、
and anoint David as king of Israel (1 Samuel 16:12-13). ダビデにイスラエルの王としての油を注ぐよう、神に命じられました（サムエル記上１６章１２節−１３節）。
In this way, God used Samuel to establish a king for Israel. このように、神様はサムエルを用いてイスラエルに王を立てられたのです。
Thus, Samuel became the last judge of Israel. こうして、サムエルはイスラエルの最後の士師となりました。
When Samuel died, all Israel mourned his death (1 Samuel 25:1). サムエルが死ぬと、イスラエル全土が彼の死を悼みました（サムエル記上２５章１節）。
As we look back upon Samuel’s life, we are reminded that he was God’s answer in response to Hannah’s fervent prayer for a child. サムエルの生涯を振り返る時、私達は、サムエルがハンナの「子供が欲しい」という熱心な祈りに対する神様の答えであったことを思い起こします。
And as Samuel humbly answered God’s call, he mightily served as a prophet of Israel. そしてサムエルは謙虚に神様の呼びかけに応え、イスラエルの預言者として力強く仕えました。
As I think of Samuel’s life, I am reminded that our life is an answer to someone’s prayer. サムエルの生涯を思う時、私達の人生は誰かの祈りに対する答えであることを思い起こします。
Our life has meaning because God has ordained it. 神様が定められたからこそ、私達の人生には意味があります。
Our life is meant to be lived in relationship to God and His will for us. 私達の人生は、神様と私達に対する神様の御心と、その関係の中で生きるように意図されています。
We may not have been brought into this world in the same manner as Samuel, but still, we are precious in God’s eyes. 私達はサムエルのようにこの世に生を受けたわけではないかもしれませんが、それでも神様の目には尊い存在なのです。
We may not have the same kind of calling or giftings as Samuel, 私達はサムエルのような召命や賜物を持っていないかもしれませんが、
but still God calls each of us to follow Him and gifts us to do certain things. それでも神様は私達一人一人を神様に従うように召し、特定のことをするように私達に賜物を与えてくださいます。
One other thing we can glean from Samuel’s life. サムエルの生涯から得られるもう一つのことがあります。
No matter how great a calling we may have, we still need to attend to the spiritual nurturing of our own family. 私達がどんなに偉大な召しを持っていたとしても、私達は自分の家族の霊的養育に気を配る必要があります。
Sadly, the one thing that Samuel experienced that his mentor Eli experienced was the destructive nature of their own sons. 悲しいことに、彼の師であるエリが経験し、サムエルが経験したことは、彼らの息子達の破壊的な性質でした。
This impacted not just their own lives but the whole nation of Israel as well. これは彼らの人生だけでなく、イスラエル全体にも影響を与えました。
For me as a pastor, it is a sobering reminder of my own need to continually attend to the spiritual care of my children as a father. 牧師である私にとっては、父親として子供たちの霊的ケアに絶えず気を配る必要性を痛感させられます。
At the same time, I hope that we can all learn to remember, especially as we serve in various manners in the church, 同時に、特に教会でさまざまな形で奉仕している私達全員が、
that our first ministry is to our own family members. 私達の最初の務めは自分の家族に対するものであることを忘れないようになることを願っています。
That is, our faith in Jesus Christ must first be lived out in our own homes. つまり、イエス・キリストへの信仰は、まず自分の家庭で実践されなければならないのです。
I am always humbled and challenged by reading the following verses in Scripture. 聖書の次の箇所を読むと、私はいつも謙虚になり、挑戦を受けます。
Philippians 2:5-11
5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. 8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. 5キリスト・イエスにあっていだいているのと同じ思いを、あなたがたの間でも互に生かしなさい。6キリストは、神のかたちであられたが、神と等しくあることを固守すべき事とは思わず、 7かえって、おのれをむなしうして僕のかたちをとり、人間の姿になられた。その有様は人と異ならず、8おのれを低くして、死に至るまで、しかも十字架の死に至るまで従順であられた。9それゆえに、神は彼を高く引き上げ、すべての名にまさる名を彼に賜わった。10それは、イエスの御名によって、天上のもの、地上のもの、地下のものなど、あらゆるものがひざをかがめ、11また、あらゆる舌が、「イエス・キリストは主である」と告白して、栄光を父なる神に帰するためである。
Samuel’s call to minister as a prophet began by humbly responding to God’s call, “Speak, for Your servant is listening.” サムエルが預言者として召されたのは「あなたの僕は聞きます。お語りください」という神様の呼びかけに謙虚に応えることから始まりました。
Jesus humbly fulfilled God’s call by becoming a bond-servant and obeying God the Father even to the point of death on a cross in order to save us. イエス様は、私達を救うために、神に仕える者となり、十字架上で死に至るまで父なる神様に従うことによって、神様の呼びかけに謙虚に応えられました。
As we come together to partake of the Lord’s Supper, let us express our humble gratitude for the fact that all of our sins and failures have been dealt with through Jesus’ sacrificial death upon the cross. 共に主の晩餐にあずかるにあたり、イエス様の十字架上の犠牲の死によって、私達の罪と失敗がすべて取り除かれたことへの謙虚な感謝を表しましょう。
At the same time, let us resolve to learn from Jesus’ perfect example of humble submission and obedience to the Heavenly Father, 同時に、天の父への謙遜に服従し従ったイエス様の完全な模範から学ぶことを決意し、
and rededicate ourselves to answer God’s call to live with Him and for Him forever to His glory. 神様の永遠の栄光のために、彼と共に、彼のために永遠に生きるという神様の呼びかけに応えるために、自分自身を再献身させましょう。
