サムソンに神様は特別に「怪力」という賜物（ギフト）を与えました。その力は人よりもちょっと力持ちというようなものではなくて、圧倒的な腕力でした。１９１０年創業の「サムソナイト」というスーツケースメーカーがあります。その名前はいかなる環境にも耐えられるようにと、屈強なサムソンの名前からつけられたと言われています。
しかし、このサムソンには一つの欠点がありました。それは「自分の心を制することができない」という欠点でした。敵を圧倒的に打ち負かす腕力はあっても、彼は自らの心をコントロールすることができなかったのです。
『自分の心を制しない人は、城壁のない破れた城のようだ』（箴言２５章２８節）。 この弱点ゆえに、彼の人生は城壁のない城のように、徐々に崩れていきます・・・（大倉）。

サムソンに残された五分

私達は聖書中の人物を見ており、最近は士師記を通して何人かの士師達を見てきました。士師の時代がどんな時代であったかということは士師記１７章６節の言葉が簡潔に説明しているということを既にお話ししました。
士師記１７章６節 「そのころイスラエルには王がなかったので、人々はおのおの自分たちの目に正しいと思うことを行った」
「自分の目に正しい」とは頼もしい言葉として聞こえますが、肝心なことは、それが「本当に正しいのか」ということです。「自分の目に正しいこと」とは、結局のところ「自分が願うこと」「自分がしたいこと」に過ぎないことが多々あるからです。もし、私達の目に正しく思われることが、いつも本当に正しいのなら、この世界はもっとましな世界となっていたことでしょう。
また自分の目に正しく見えることは、必ずしも他の人の目にも正しいものであるとはかぎりません。現在、私達の世界には「自分の目に正しいこと」のせめぎあいによる数えきれない深刻な問題があります。そのような意味で士師記の時代も今も何ら変わりません。
この「自らの目に正しいこと」に従い、彼らはあるパターンを繰り返したということも何度もお話ししています。すなわち彼らは神への信仰を捨てて、異教の偶像崇拝に陥り、外敵によって力を失います。そして神に助けを求め、神様は彼らを憐れみ、再び、立ち上がっていくというパターンです。そのような中で神は士師を起こし、イスラエルを守ろうとされます。聖書の士師記にはそんな士師が１４名、出てきます。今日はその士師の中、サムソンという人にフォーカスしたいと思います。
サムソンの母は彼が胎内にいる時から、サムソンをナジル人として育てるようにと御使いの示しを受けていました。ナジル人とは神に捧げられた人のことを指します。そして、そのナジル人の証しとして、彼らの髪の毛は切られることなく、彼らはぶどう酒と濃い酒を飲むことが禁じられていました。
士師記１３章２４節に「その子は成長し、主は彼を恵まれた」と記しているように、サムソンは主の恵みを受けながら、ナジル人として成長しました。そのサムソンが生きた時代、イスラエルは敵のペリシテ人の支配の元に４０年もの間、屈していました。サムソンはそのペリシテ人からイスラエルを守るべく２０年の間、士師としてイスラエルを導きます。

サムソンの上に神の霊が臨んだ時に、彼には異常なほどの怪力が与えられたと聖書は記録しています。ある時、ぶどう畑で獅子がサムソンに襲いかかってきたことがありました
士師記１４章５節、６節 5彼がテムナのぶどう畑に着くと、一頭の若いししがほえたけって彼に向かってきた。6 時に主の霊が激しく彼に臨んだので、彼はあたかも子やぎを裂くようにそのししを裂いたが、手にはなんの武器も持っていなかった。
彼を捕えようとする者がサムソンを綱で固く縛ったことがありました。
士師記１５章１４節 その時、主の霊が激しく彼に臨んだので、彼の腕にかかっていた綱は火に焼けた亜麻のようになって、そのなわめが手から解けて落ちた。
サムソンの怪力の前に立つ敵はことごとく彼によって打ち負かされました
士師記１５章１５節 彼はろばの新しいあご骨一つを見つけたので、手を伸べて取り、それをもって一千人を打ち殺した。
これらのことは主の霊が望む時に、彼は超人になったということを明らかにしています。
しかし、このサムソンには一つの欠点がありました。なんだと思いますか。それは「自分の心を制することができない」という欠点でした。敵を圧倒的に打ち負かす腕力はあっても、彼は自らの心をコントロールすることができなかったのです。
箴言は自分の心を制することができる人についてこう言っています。
箴言１６章３２節 『自分の心を治める者は城を攻め取る者にまさる』。
反対に自分の心を制することができない人についてこう言っています。
箴言２５章２８節 『自分の心を制しない人は、城壁のない破れた城のようだ』。
この弱点ゆえに、彼の人生は城壁のない城のように、徐々に崩れていきます。
私達に与えられている力には色々なものがあります。腕力、財力、知力・・・。二週間前にお話ししたように、私達がこれらの力を向ける方向を間違えると私達は諸々の問題と向き合わなければならなくなります。さらに、その心がコントロールされなければ、その力が大きければ大きいほど私達は大きな問題を抱え込みます。これらの力はどのように使われ、どこに向かうべきなのでしょうか。これらの力に指令を出すのは「私達の心」なのです。
サムソンには弱点がありました。その弱点は異性に対する情欲でした。彼はそのことに関して全く無力だったのです。怪力をもっていかなるものも打ち負かすことができた彼でしたが、自らの心を制するためにその怪力は何の役にも立たなかったのです。
彼はペリシテ人からイスラエルを守るという使命が与えられていたにもかかわらず、こともあろうか、その宿敵ペリシテの女に心惹かれて、彼女を妻としようとしました。宿敵を妻とするなどは本来ありえないのですが、自らの怪力に頼り、自分がしたい放題をしてきたサムソンは、その女性に対する情欲に躊躇なく従ったのです。
ある日、サムソンはこのペリシテの女との婚礼の場で、彼は招待した客たちに謎かけをします。しかし、客達はそれを解くことができずに、最後には彼の妻が、その答えを客達に明かしてしまいます。そのことで激しい怒りに燃えたサムソンは新妻をそのままそこに残して実家に帰ってしまい、残された妻は婚宴に来ていた花婿付添人の妻となりました。
これから結婚生活が始まるという時に、彼はその怒りを抑えることができずに妻を失います。
彼がその時に自らの心を制することができれば、彼は妻を失うことはなかったでしょう。時に私達はこのような失敗や過ちを犯すことがあります。もし、その失敗や過ちから学ぶのなら、私達はそこから成長することができます。
しかし、悲しいかな、サムソンはその自分の失敗や過ちから学ぶことはありませんでした。サムソンの女性に対する情欲は変わることなく、妻を失ったサムソンは、今度は一人の遊女のもとに身を寄せます（士師記１６章１節−３節）。
その時、サムソンはペリシテの町で最も南に位置する町、ガザに来ていました。私達にも聞き慣れた町です。そう、そこは今、世界中が注目している、あのガザです。今も地図を見れば分かりますが、ガザはエジプトとメソポタミヤを結ぶ交通の要衝で、その土地柄、当時、そこには娼婦がたくさんいたようです。なぜサムソンはそのようなところに来たのでしょうか。
彼はそこでペリシテの遊女のもとに身を寄せました。ナジル人である彼が敵地ガザで敵のペリシテの遊女と関係をもつということは到底、許されることではありません。
自分が向かう場所、身を置く環境、時にそこには私達の願望が現れます。サムソンは「自分の目に正しい」、すなわち「自分の情欲がかなう場所」に身を置いたのです。大勢の娼婦がいる町、そこで彼は偶然ではなく、出会うべくしてこのペリシテの遊女に出会ったのです。
「主の祈り」にはこんな一節があります。「我らを試みにあわせず、悪より救い出したまえ」英語の聖書はLead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.と記しています。
すなわち、ここで祈られていることは「私達が誘惑に出会うことがありませんように」ということです。この言葉は「私達が誘惑に出会ってしまうと、私達はそれに打ち勝てるような者ではないのです」ということを暗示しています。詩篇１篇１節は言います。
詩篇１篇１節 悪しき者のはかりごとに歩まず、罪びとの道に立たず、あざける者の座にすわらぬ人はさいわいである。
そもそも誘惑と共に歩むことをせず、そもそもそこに立つこともせず、そもそもそこに居座ることがないようにとこの詩篇は私達に語りかけます。誘惑に近づかない、誘惑から離れる、それが誘惑から守られるための方法なのです。情欲に弱いサムソンはその情欲に一番、出会う可能性のあるガザに近づき、そこに留まったのです。
主にある皆さん、私達は必然的に誘惑に会うことが分かっていながら、そこに身を置いていることがないでしょうか。サムソンから学び、誘惑から離れましょう。Let us learn fromそれを明日に先延ばしせずに、今日、誘惑から離れましょう。
士師記はサムソンの怪力ばかりを記録しています。サムソンが神の言葉を民に語るというような場面は士師記のどこにも記されていません。このことから彼自身も神の言葉に近い者ではなかったことが想像できます。
私達が神の言葉から離れると、私生活の指針となる基準というものが失われます。彼は遊女で満ちている町に身を置き、そこにいることに対する危機感というセンサーが壊れてしまっていたのです。主にある皆さん、神の言葉は私達を危険から守るセンサーとなるのです。折に触れていつも皆さんにお話しすることがあります。そうすることにより、このことをいつも自分に言い聞かせています。
これから皆さんがサンタモニカにドライブして行くとします。おそらく数時間後に皆さんはサンタモニカに到着することでしょう。しかし「あるもの」がないと、皆さんはサンタモニカに着くことに大きな困難を覚えます。いいえ、おそらく皆さんは無事故でサンタモニカに着くことはできないでしょう。その「あるもの」とは何でしょうか。車と車を隔てるラインです（写真１）。
場所によっては片側７車線もあるのが南カリフォルニアのフリーウエイです。私たちがそのフリーウエイを運転する時、そこに道を七つに区切る車線がないことを想像してください。皆さんの前には、七車線分のただ広いスペースだけがあることを想像してください。
それがここからサンタモニカまで続いており、多くの車と共に、ごちゃごちゃになりながら、皆さんはその広いスペースを運転します。あなたはそのフリーウエイを安全に運転して、サンタモニカまで行けますか。私にはできません。考えただけでもゾッとします。私が事故を起こすのは時間の問題だからです。
あなたの人生にあなたを守るラインがありますか。その人生に「このラインを超えてはいけない」と教えてくれるガイドラインがありますか。「何でも好きなことをしなさい」というこの世界にあって、私達は子供に語ることができる「ガイドライン」を持っているでしょうか？それは「あなたの目に正しいと思われるガイドライン」ですか？その自分の目に正しいと思われるガイドラインはどれだけ信頼に足るものですか。
あなたが自分の目に正しく思われるガイドラインは、あなたの隣の人の目に正しく思われるガイドラインとは違う可能性が大いにあります。もし私達が同じガイドラインを持っているのなら、私達は同じものを見続け、同じ目的地に向かうことができるでしょう。しかし、私達と違うガイドラインに従っている人が助手席に座っていたら、私達は違いの正しさを主張しているうちに道に迷い、事故に巻き込まれるでしょう。
私達の車の後部座席には誰が座っているでしょうか。彼らは私達のハンドルに自分の命を委ねているのです。主にある皆さん、彼らを私達は安全に目的地にまで届けることができるのでしょうか。私達が向かっている方向は、神が私達に望まれる方向なのでしょうか。
サムソンは女性で何度も失敗しました。しかし、本来、異性に向けられる愛は神が私達に与えてくださっている祝福だと聖書は私達に語りかけます。人を愛するとはどういうことなのか。聖書の中にはそのことが十二分に記されているのです。若い人もそうでない人も詩篇１１９篇の御言葉を心に留めましょう。
詩篇１１９篇９節 若い人はどうしておのが道を清く保つことができるでしょうか。み言葉にしたがって、それを守るよりほかにありません。
聖書は言います。私達の生きる道がきよく保たれるためには、神の言葉にしたがって生きる以外にない、他にはないと。
ガザの遊女の元を去ったサムソンが次に向かったのは再び、女性でした。彼はペリシテ人であっただろうと思われるデリラという女性に自らの情欲を傾けました。ここまでサムソンと関係のあった三人の女性についてお話ししていますが、彼女たちは皆、サムソンの宿敵ペリシテの女性なのです。サムソンには神様が教えてくださるバウンデリーなるものはなかったことが、ここからわかります。彼は好き放題、自分の情欲に従い、生きたのです。
一人で一千人を打ち負かす怪力をもっているサムソンを恐れる彼の敵、ペリシテ人は、サムソンが夢中になっているデリラのもとにやってきます。彼らは銀千百枚の報奨金をちらつかせ、どうしたらサムソンを捕らえることができるのかを彼から聞きだすようにと彼女に促します。
そんなことを言われても、本当にサムソンを愛しているのなら、彼女は彼を売り渡すことなどなかったでしょう。しかし、デリラは報奨金に惹かれたのでしょう、手を変え、品を変え、どうにかしてサムソンから彼の弱点を聞きだそうとします。しかし、なかなか彼は真実を話すことはせず、彼は三度、彼女をあざむきます。しかし、最後に彼は彼女への情に負け、デリラに自分の力の出どころを打ち明けます。
そう、彼の力の源は彼が頭にカミソリを当てたことのない、その長い髪にありました。その髪が伸びている限り、彼にはいつも怪力が伴ったのです。そのことを聞いたデリラはサムソンが自分のひざの上に頭を乗せて、彼が眠っている間に、彼の髪をそり落とします。目が覚めて、完全に力を失い普通の人となったサムソンはペリシテ人に捕らえられます。彼は縄に縛られ、目をえぐり出されてしまいます。
女性に弱いサムソンは、金銭に弱いデリラによって敵に売られたのです。なんと悲しい結末でしょうか。しかし皆さん、このようなことは今日の私達の世界のいたるところでも、見受けられないでしょうか。
さて、ここで私がこのメッセージを備えながら頭を抱えたことについてお話ししましょう。二週間前にお話ししたエフタ同様、その信仰が賞賛されているヘブル１１章３２節の信仰列伝の中に、このサムソンの名もあるのです。
ヘブル１１章３２節 このほか、何を言おうか。もしギデオン、バラク、サムソン、エフタ、ダビデ、サムエル及び預言者たちについて語り出すなら、時間が足りないであろう。
ここでサムソンは信仰の賞賛の対象になっているのです。しかし、私達は思います。彼の何が賞賛されたのか。
ここまで話してきましたサムソンは怪力がありながら、女性への情欲に溺れ、感情的で、心の安定からかけ離れた男でした。これら私が皆さんにお話ししてきたことの中に、何か彼が賞賛されることがあったでしょうか。何度、聖書を読んでもなかなか賞賛に値することが見つかりません。
それでは、今日、私がまだ皆さんに話していないことは何でしょうか。それはデリラに裏切られ、売り渡されたサムソンが捕らえられた後のことです。力を失い、両眼がえぐりだされたサムソンは足かせをはめられ、毎日、臼を轢き続けていたのです。
ある日、そんなサムソンは３０００人ものペリシテ人が集まる場所に、連れこさせられ、彼らの偶像神ダゴンを前に、侮辱され、見世物とされます。その時、彼はその家を支えている二本の柱の側におり、彼は主に呼ばわったのです。
士師記１６章２８節 「ああ、主なる神よ、どうぞ、わたしを覚えてください。ああ、神よ、どうぞもう一度、わたしを強くして、わたしの二つの目の一つのためにでもペリシテびとにあだを報いさせてください」。
そう言って、彼はその柱を抱え、力を込めて身をかがめると、その柱は折れ、その家は崩れ落ち、サムソンもそこにいた３０００人の宿敵ペリシテ人の命が失われたのです。なぜ、その時の彼に、かつてのような怪力があったのでしょうか。月日が経ち、彼の頭髪が生え始め、神はその彼に再び、怪力を与えたからです。
主にある皆さん、サムソンが言った「ああ、主なる神よ、わたしを覚えてください」という言葉は何を指していたのでしょうか。それは彼が神に捧げられたナジル人として生まれてきた者であるということです。ペリシテ人に立ち向かうべく生まれ、育てられたのに、彼がペリシテの女を妻としようとした時、彼の父母の心の痛みはどれほどだったことでしょうか。
彼がペリシテの遊女と戯れているという風の噂はサムソンの父母にとってどんなに大きな悲しみだったことでしょうか。彼は懲りることなく、繰り返し、ナジル人に反する生き方をしてきました。ですから「ああ、主なる神よ、わたしを覚えてください」という言葉はサムソンの悔い改めの叫びでした。
両目をえぐり出され、かつての力を全く失い、侮辱を受け、臼をひきながら彼は自分の弱さと罪深さに気がついたのでしょう。そして、自分の怪力は神が与えてくださっているものであるということをしみじみと知ったのでしょう。神様は「ああ、主なる神よ、わたしを覚えてください」という、その彼の願いを受け止め、再び彼に力を与えたのです。
みなさん、死ぬ間際の、この彼の言葉から、彼と同じようにかつて生きた人がいたことを思い起こしませんか。時はサムソンの時代から約１１００年後、場所はエルサレムのカルバリの丘。
その時、そこには三つの十字架が立てられていました。その一本にはイエス・キリストがそして、その両脇には二人の強盗で捕まった者達がいました。彼らは十字架による死罪という極刑を受けていたのですから、そうとうに悪いことをしたのでしょう。
当初、彼らは彼らと同じように十字架に磔にされているイエス様を罵っていました。しかし、イエス様の言動を間近に観察していた一人の強盗の心に変化が起こりました。名前も記されていない、その一人がイエス様に向かい言いました。
ルカ２３章４２節 「イエスよ、あなたが御国の権威をもっておいでになる時には、わたしを思い出してください」。
イエス様はそれに答えてこう言いました。
ルカ２３章４３節 「よく言っておくが、あなたはきょう、わたしと一緒にパラダイスにいるであろう」。
彼の心は死ぬ直前に神に向いたのです。彼の人生の全体で考えれば、彼に残された時間はその人生の何十万分の一の時間だったことでしょう。しかし、その最後の数分、彼の心はイエスに向けられ、その彼の心をイエスは受け入れたのです。
同じようにサムソンも自らの命が絶える直前、本当の意味で神に立ち返ったのです。神様がこのような人を赦し、受け入れてくださることを私達は「神の恵み」と言います。
あなたの人生の４割はそこそこ神と共に歩んできた。しかし、残りの６割は好き勝手に生きてきた。だから、あなたは不合格だ。聖書はそのようなことは言っていません。
サムソンと強盗の人生に残された５分は私達に語りかけます。神は私達が死ぬ間際まで、私達が神に目を向けることを願っておられる。そして、それが死の直前であっても、私達が神に立ち返るのなら、神はあなたを迎え入れる。
もし、神が「そんなラストミニッツではだめだ！」と言われるのなら、それは神の恵みには限界があることを意味します。それは神には出来ないことがあるということであり、神の恵みは私達の生きてきた人生よりも小さいということを意味します。主にある皆さん神の恵みに制限はなく、神の恵みは私達の人生の過ちよりも遥かに大きいのです。
このようなことをお話ししますと、こんなことを考えている人がいるかもしれません。「そんなの不公平だ。俺は長い間、神への信仰と共に生きてきたのだ」イエス・キリストはこのような人を放蕩息子の長男として、言い表しました。
またイエス様は朝昼晩と違う時間に雇われた「ブドウ園の労働者」の譬え話でも私達に語りかけます（マタイ２０章１節−１６節）。朝９時から働いている人と終業時間ギリギリの夕方五時にやってきて数分働く人に私は同じ賃金を支払うと。当然、朝９時から働いている私達はそのことに不満をもちます。しかし、私達の父なる神は言います。
マタイ２０章１４節 「わたしはこの最後の者にも、あなたと同じように支払ってやりたいのだ」
神と共に生きてきた人生、それこそが人間が与えられている最高の人生です。そのような人生を、神の恵みにより、その人生の早い時期に歩むことが許され、それを味わいつつ、私達はここまで来ました。ですのに、なぜ最後の最後にやってきた人に対して、なぜ私達は「不公平だ！」などと言うことができるでしょうか。あの放蕩息子の父がそうであったように、私達は一人の人が神に立ち返ったことを心から喜ぶべきなのです。
私はかつてこんなことを何度か言われたこともあります。「牧師さん、それなら私は死ぬ間際に神に立ち返るよ」。私はコリント第二の手紙６章１節から２節の言葉をそんな方達に送りたいと思います。
２コリント６章１節—２節 1 わたしたちはまた、神と共に働く者として、あなたがたに勧める。神の恵みをいたずらに受けてはならない。2 神はこう言われる「わたしは、恵みの時にあなたの願いを聞きいれ、救の日にあなたを助けた」。見よ、今は恵みの時、見よ、今は救の日である。
サムソンは神にそむき、自らの失敗で力を失いました。その時以来、彼の頭から髪が生えなかったかというと、神の救いの象徴となった彼の頭髪はそれ以後も生え続けたのです。その背後には神様がいます。
すなわち、そのことはたとえ彼が神様を脇において生きたとしても、神の恵みは変わらず、サムソンの上に注がれ続けていたということです。「恵み」は「愛」と言い換えることができます。すなわち神の愛は変わらずにサムソンの上に注がれていたのです。
主にある皆さん、この愛を知りながらも、それを無視し「最後だけ心をあなたに向けますから、その時はよろしく」などと言うことができましょうか。主にある皆さん、今も私たちに注がれている神の恵みをいたずらに受けてはなりません。ヘブル３章１５節は私達に今も語り続けているのです。
ヘブル３章１５節 「きょう、み声を聞いたなら、神にそむいた時のように、あなたがたの心を、かたくなにしてはいけない」。
ヘブル１１章の信仰列伝に記録されている人達には確かに彼らの信仰がありました。しかし、どの人間も完全な人間ではありませんでした。いいえ、かえって問題を抱えていた人がほとんどです。ということは、ヘブル１１章は信仰列伝であると同時に、それは神の恵みが注がれた人たちのリストだということもできますでしょう。サムソンは最後の最後に本当の意味で神の御心に従った、その信仰ゆえに彼の名はそこに記されているのではないでしょうか。今日、皆さんはサムソンの人生から何が示されましたか。１コリント１０章１１節から１２節は言っています。
１コリント１０章１１節—１２節 11これらの事が彼らに起ったのは、他に対する警告としてであって、それが書かれたのは、世の終りに臨んでいるわたしたちに対する訓戒のためである。12だから、立っていると思う者は、倒れないように気をつけるがよい。
そうです、サムソンの人生が聖書に記されているのは私達のためであり、そこから私達はどう生きるのかを学ぶのです。今日、お話ししたことをもし、皆さんが心に受け止めるのなら、明らかにこれからの人生は変わると信じています。
これからの皆さんの旅路は神の言葉により守られ、祝されるのですから。そして、昔も今も、そしてこれからも神の恵みが私達に注がれ続けていることを私達は今日、知ったのですから。
お祈りしましょう。
The Five Minutes Left for Samson

We have been looking at people in the Bible, and recently we have looked at some of the judges through the book of Judges. I have already told you that the words of Judges 17:6 succinctly explains what the Time of the Judges was like.
Judges 17:6; NASB. In those days there was no king in Israel; every man did what was right in his own eyes.
While “right in his own eyes” sounds like a reliable statement, the crucial question is, is it “truly right”? For “what is right in one’s own eyes” is often, after all, only “what one wishes” or “what one wants to do”. If what seems right in our eyes were always truly right, this world would be a much better place.
Also, what is right in one’s own eyes is not necessarily right in the eyes of others. There are countless serious problems in our world today due to the struggle for “what is right in one’s own eyes”. In this sense, the Time of the Judges was no different than it is today.
I have also told you many times that they followed this “what is right in their own eyes” and repeated certain patterns. That is, they abandoned their faith in God, fell into pagan idolatry, and were disempowered by external enemies. Then they asked God for help, and God took pity on them and, once again, the pattern was that they got back on their feet.
In the midst of all this, God raised up a judge to protect Israel. In the biblical book of Judges, there are 14 such judges. Today, I would like to focus on one of those judges, Samson. Samson’s mother had received angelic revelation to raise Samson as a Nazirite, from the time he was in her womb. A Nazirite is a person dedicated to God. And as a testimony of being a Nazirite, their hair was not to be cut, and they were forbidden to drink wine and strong drink.
As Judges 13:24 states, “He grew and the Lord blessed him,” Samson grew up as a Nazirite with the Lord’s blessings. During the time in which Samson lived, Israel had been under the rule of its enemies, the Philistines, for forty years. Samson led Israel as a judge for 20 years to defend Israel against the Philistines.
God gave Samson the special gift of “wondrous strength”. His strength was not that of a person who was a little more powerful than others, but overwhelming arm strength. There is a suitcase manufacturer called Samsonite, founded in 1910. Its name is said to have been taken from the name of the mighty Samson, with the intention to be able to withstand any environment.
When the Spirit of God came upon Samson, the Bible records that he was given extraordinary wondrous strength. On one occasion, a lion attacked Samson in the vineyard.
Judges 14:5, 6. 5 Samson went down to Timnah together with his father and mother. As they approached the vineyards of Timnah, suddenly a young lion came roaring toward him. 6 The Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him so that he tore the lion apart with his bare hands as he might have torn a young goat.
On one occasion, those who wanted to capture Samson tied him tightly with ropes.
Judges 15:14. The Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him. The ropes on his arms became like charred flax, and the bindings dropped from his hands.
Every enemy who stood before Samson’s wondrous strength was vanquished by him.
Judges 15:15. Finding a fresh jawbone of a donkey, he grabbed it and struck down a thousand men.
These things reveal that when the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, he became superhuman.
However, this Samson had one shortcoming. What do you think it was? It was a shortcoming of “not having self-control”. Despite his prowess in overwhelmingly defeating his enemies, he could not control himself.
Proverbs says this about those who are able to have self-control.
Proverbs 16:32. Better . . . one with self-control than one who takes a city.
On the contrary, it says this about those who cannot control themselves.
Proverbs 25:28. Like a city whose walls are broken through is a person who lacks self-control.
Because of this weakness, his life slowly crumbles like a castle without walls.
There are many different kinds of power given to us. Arm strength, financial power, intellectual power . . . As I told you two weeks ago, if we misdirect these powers, we will have to deal with all sorts of problems. Furthermore, if there is no self-control, the greater the power, the greater our problems. How should these powers be used and where should they be directed? It is “our heart” that directs these powers.
Samson had a weakness. That weakness was his lust for the opposite sex. He was totally helpless in the matter. He was able to defeat anything with his wondrous strength, but his wondrous strength was of no use when it came to controlling himself.
Although he had been given the mission of defending Israel against the Philistines, can you believe it, he was attracted to a Philistine woman, his sworn enemy, and tried to have her as his wife. It was unthinkable for him to have his sworn enemy as his wife, but Samson, who had done whatever he wanted, relying on his own wondrous strength, did not hesitate to follow his lust for the woman.
One day, on the occasion of Samson’s wedding to this Philistine woman, he poses a riddle to the guests he has invited. But the guests are unable to solve it, and in the end his wife reveals the answer to them. In a fit of rage over this, Samson left his new wife there and returned to his parents’ home, and his left-behind-wife became the wife of the groomsman who had come to the wedding banquet.
Just as he is about to start his marriage, he loses his wife because he cannot control his anger.
Had he been able to control himself at the time, he would not have lost his wife. Sometimes we make these mistakes and errors. If we learn from those mistakes and errors, we can grow from them.
Sadly, however, Samson never learned from his own mistakes and failures. Samson’s lust for women remains unchanged, and after losing his wife, he now takes refuge with a prostitute (Judges 16:1-3).
At that time, Samson came to Gaza, the most southern of the Philistine towns. It is a town we are all familiar with. Yes, that Gaza, the town that is now the focus of the world’s attention. As you can still see from a map, Gaza was a major transportation hub between Egypt and Mesopotamia, and because of its location, there were many prostitutes there at that time. Why did Samson come to such a place?
There he took refuge with a Philistine prostitute. It is unacceptable that he, a Nazirite, would have relations with an enemy Philistine prostitute in the hostile territory of Gaza.
Where we head, the environment we put ourselves in, sometimes our desires appear there. Samson placed himself in a place that was “right in his own eyes,” that is, “where his lust was fulfilled”. There, in a town full of prostitutes, he met this Philistine prostitute, not by chance, but as he was meant to meet her.
The Lord’s Prayer includes this one verse. “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”
The English Bible states, “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”
In other words, what is being prayed for here is “may we never encounter temptation”.These words imply that “when we encounter temptation, we are not the ones who can overcome it”. Psalm 1:1 says.
Psalm 1:1. Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers,
This Psalm tells us not to walk with temptation in the first place, not to stand there in the first place, not to sit there in the first place. Staying away from temptation, getting away from temptation, is the way to be protected from it. Samson, who was weak to lust, approached Gaza, where he was most likely to encounter such lust, and stayed there.
People in the Lord, have we ever put ourselves out there knowing that we will inevitably meet with temptation? Let us learn from Samson, and stay away from temptation. Don’t put it off to tomorrow; leave temptation today.
The book of Judges records only Samson’s wondrous strength. Nowhere in the book of Judges is Samson mentioned as speaking the word of God to the people. From this we can imagine that he himself was not close to the Word of God.
When we move away from the Word of God, we lose the very standards that guide our personal lives. He had placed himself in a town filled with prostitutes, and his sensor of danger for being there had been broken. People in the Lord, the Word of God becomes the sensor that protects us from danger. I always have something to say to you from time to time. In doing so, I remind myself of this all the time.
Let’s say that you are all about to drive to Santa Monica. Most likely in a few hours you will all arrive in Santa Monica. However, without a “certain thing,” you all will have great difficulty in getting to Santa Monica. No, you probably will not make it to Santa Monica without getting in to an accident.
What is this “certain thing”? It is the line that separates cars from each other.
In some places, there are as many as seven lanes in each direction, such is a freeway in Southern California. Imagine that when we drive on that freeway, there are no lines dividing the road into seven lanes. Imagine that there is only a wide space of seven lanes in front of you all.
It continues from here to Santa Monica, and you all drive through that wide open space, along with many cars, in a jumble. Can you safely drive that freeway to Santa Monica? I cannot do it. I shudder to even think about it. It is only a matter of time before I cause an accident.
Is there a line in your life that protects you? Are there guidelines in that life that tells you “do not cross this line”? In this world of “do whatever you want,” do we have “guidelines” we can tell our children? Are those “guidelines that seem right in your eyes”?How reliable are those guidelines that seem right in your own eyes?
The guidelines that seem right in your own eyes may very well be different from the guidelines that seem right in the eyes of your neighbors. If we have the same guidelines we will be able to continue to see the same things and head toward the same destination. However, if someone who follows different guidelines than we do were sitting in the passenger seat, we would get lost and get into an accident while insisting on the correctness of our differences.
Who sits in the back seat of our car? They are entrusting their lives to our driving. People in the Lord, can we deliver them safely to the destination? Is the direction we are heading the direction God wants us to go?
Samson failed many times with women. But essentially, the Bible tells us that love directed toward the opposite sex is a blessing that God has given us. What does it mean to love someone? The Bible more than enough records this matter. Young and not-so-young alike should take to heart the words of Psalm 119.
Psalm 119:9. How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to Your word.
The Bible says. For our way of life to remain pure, we must live according to the Word of God, and there is no other way.
After leaving the Gaza prostitute, Samson’s next stop was, once again, a woman. He turned his affections to a woman named Delilah, who was probably a Philistine. So far we have talked about three women who were associated with Samson, all of whom were Philistine women, Samson’s sworn enemies.
We can see from this that Samson did not have a boundary that God would teach him. He lived as he pleased, following his own lusts.
His enemies, the Philistines, fear Samson, who has the wondrous strength to defeat 1000 men single-handedly, and come to Delilah, whom Samson is infatuated with. They flicker a reward of 1000 hundred pieces of silver and urge her to find out from him how they can capture Samson.
Even if told that, if she really loved Samson, she would not have sold him out. But Delilah, perhaps lured by the bounty, changes her tactics, and somehow manages to get Samson to tell her his weakness.
However, he does not readily tell her the truth, and he deceives her three times. In the end, however, he is overcome by his feelings for her and confides to Delilah the source of his power.
Yes, the source of his power was in his long hair, which he never put a razor to on his head. As long as that hair grew long, he was always accompanied by wondrous strength. Hearing this, Delilah shaves off his hair while Samson rests his head on her lap and he sleeps. When Samson wakes up, completely disempowered and ordinary, he is captured by the Philistines. He is bound with ropes and his eyes are gouged out.
Samson, weak with women, was sold to the enemy by Delilah, weak with money. What a sad ending. But folks, don’t we see this everywhere in our world today?
Now, let me tell you about something that has been on my mind as I prepared this message. Like Jephthah, whose faith is commended in Hebrews 11:32, which I spoke of two weeks ago, Samson’s name is also mentioned in this Hall of Faith.
Hebrews 11:32. And what more shall I say? I do not have time to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson and Jephthah, about David and Samuel and the prophets,
Here Samson is one who is commended for his faith. But we think. What about him was he commended for?
Samson, as we have discussed, was a man of wondrous strength, but also a man consumed by lust for women, emotional and far from being stable. In all these things I have told you, has there been anything that he has been commended for?
No matter how many times I read the Bible, I have a hard time finding anything worthy of commendation.
So, what is it that I have not already told you today? It is what happened after Samson was betrayed, sold out by Delilah, and was captured. With his strength gone and both eyes gouged out, Samson was in shackles, pushing a millstone day after day.
One day, such a Samson is brought to a place where 3000 Philistines are gathered, and is insulted and made a spectacle before their idol god Dagon. At that time he was by the two pillars that supported the house, and he called out to the Lord.
Judges 16:28. “Sovereign Lord, remember me. Please, God, strengthen me just once more, and let me with one blow get revenge on the Philistines for my two eyes.”
So saying, he braced himself against the pillars and bent with all his might, and they broke, and the house collapsed, and the lives of Samson and the 3000 Philistines who were there, his sworn enemies, were lost. Why did he then have wondrous strength as he once had? As the months passed, the hair on his head began to grow back, for God had given him wondrous strength once again.
People in the Lord, what was Samson referring to when he said, “Sovereign LORD, remember me.”? It is that he was born a Nazirite dedicated to God. How much pain must have been in the hearts of his parents when he tried to take a Philistine woman as his wife, even though he was born and raised to stand up to the Philistines.
How great must have been the grief of Samson’s parents when they heard rumors that he was cavorting with Philistine prostitutes. He had repeatedly, without learning his lesson, lived contrary to being a Nazirite. Thus, “Sovereign LORD, remember me.” was Samson’s cry of repentance.
With both eyes gouged out, his former strength completely gone, he must have realized his weakness and sinfulness as he was insulted and pushed the millstone. And he must have learned deeply that his wondrous strength was given to him by God. God accepted his request, “Sovereign LORD, remember me.” And gave him strength again.
Ladies and gentlemen, do not these words of his, as he was about to die, remind you that there was once a man who lived as he did. The time was about 1100 years after the time of Samson and the place was the hill of Calvary in Jerusalem.
At that time, three crosses were erected there. On one of them was Jesus Christ, and on either side of him were two men convicted for robbery. They must have done something very bad because they were sentenced to death by crucifixion.
Initially, they cursed Jesus, who was being nailed to the cross just like them. However, a change occurred in the heart of one robber who was observing Jesus’ words and actions up close. One of them, whose name is not written, turned to Jesus and said.
Luke 23:42. “Jesus, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.”
Jesus responded by saying.
Luke 23:43. “Truly I tell you, today you will be with Me in paradise.”
His heart turned to God just before he died. In the totality of his life, the time left to him would have been one one-hundred-thousandth of that life. But in those last few minutes, his heart turned to Jesus, and Jesus accepted his heart.
In the same way, Samson truly turned to God just before his own life ended. We call it “God’s grace” that God forgives and accepts such a person.
Forty percent of your life has been walking so-so with God. However, the remaining 60% has been lived as you please. So, you have failed. The Bible does not say such a thing.
The five minutes left to Samson and the robber’s life speaks to us. God wants us to look to Him even up to right before we die. And if we turn to God, even if it is just before death, He will welcome you.
If God had said, “Not in those last minutes!”, then that means that God’s grace is limited. It means that there are things God cannot do, and that His grace is smaller than the life we have lived.People in the Lord, there is no limit to God’s grace, and His grace is far greater than the mistakes of our lives.
As I tell you this, you may be thinking something like this. “That’s not fair. I have lived with faith in God for a long time.” Jesus Christ described such a person as the elder brother of the prodigal son.
Jesus also speaks to us in the parable of the “Laborers in the Vineyard” who were hired at different times throughout the day—morning, noon, and night (Matthew 20:1-16). He said He would pay the same wage to someone who works from 9:00 a.m. and someone who comes in at 5:00 p.m. just before the end of the day and works for a few minutes. Naturally, those of us who work from 9 a.m. complain about that. However, God our Father says.
Luke 23:43. “Take your pay and go. I want to give the one who was hired last the same as I gave you.”
A life lived with God, that is the best life that human beings have been given. We were allowed to walk such a life early in life by the grace of God, and we have come this far while savoring it. So why could we say to those who come in at the last minute, “That’s not fair!” Just as the father of that prodigal son did, we should rejoice with all our hearts that one person has turned to God.
I was once told this several times. “Pastor, then I will turn to God in my dying moments.” I would like to give to such people the words of 2 Corinthians 6:1-2.
2 Corinthians 6:1-2. 1 As God’s co-workers we urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain. 2 For He says, “In the time of My favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.” I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.
Samson disobeyed God and lost his power through his own failure. Ever since that time, did his hair not grow from his head? No, it has continued to grow, as it became a symbol of God’s salvation. Behind all of this is God.
This means that even though he lived his life putting God aside, God’s blessings (grace) remained the same and continued to be poured out on Samson. “Grace” can be translated as “love.” In other words, God’s love was poured out on Samson without change.
People in the Lord, knowing this love, how can you ignore it and say, “I will turn my heart to You only at the end, so please take care of me then”? People in the Lord, we must not take for granted the grace of God that is being poured out on us even now. Hebrews 3:15 continues to speak to us today.
Hebrews 3:15. “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion.”
The people recorded in the Hall of Faith in Hebrews 11 certainly had their faith. However, no human being was perfect. No, in fact, most of them had problems. So, while Hebrews 11 is a Hall of Faith, it is also a list of those to whom God’s grace has been poured out. Samson truly followed God’s will at the end, and because of his faith, his name is written there.
What has Samson’s life revealed to you today? 1 Corinthians 10:11-12 says.
1 Corinthians 10:11-12. 11 These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come. 12 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!
Yes, Samson’s life is recorded in the Bible for us, and from it we learn how to live. If you take to heart what I have shared with you today, I believe that your life will obviously change in the future.
That is because you will be able to enjoy the journey from now on protected and blessed by the Word of God. And because we know today that God’s grace has been, is, and will continue to be poured out on us.
