God’s Message is Greater than His Messengers
神のメッセージは神の使者よりも偉大

Since July of last year, we have been looking at various people in the Bible as part of a message series titled “Learning from Others, How to Live with God”.　 昨年の七月以来、私達は「人から学び、神と共に生きる」と題したメッセージシリーズの一環として、聖書に登場する様々な人々を見てきました。

And most of these people are recognizable by just mentioning their name.　これらのほとんどの人達は、その名前を挙げただけで誰だか分かります。

These are people such as Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, and David.　 彼らはアダム、ノア、アブラハム、モーセ、ダビデなどです。

However, we have also looked at less known people such as Enoch, Deborah, and Jephthah.　 しかし、私達はエノク、デボラ、エフタといったあまり知られていない人達も見てきました。

For some of these people, there is much recorded in the Bible about them, of what they were like and what they did.　 ある人達については、彼らがどのような人であったか、何をしたかについて、聖書に多くのことが記されています。

However, some of these people have very little recorded about them in the Bible.　 しかし、中には聖書にほとんど記録されていない人達もいます。

Such is the person we will be looking at today.　 今日、取り上げる人もそのような人です。

In fact, the prophetic words that this person wrote are probably more recognizable than the person himself.　 実際にはこの人が書いた預言の言葉は、おそらくその人自身よりもよく知られています。

However, before I get into our study of the person in the Bible for today, let me test you on how well you recognize the following quotes by so-called famous people.　今日の聖書に登場する人物について学ぶ前に、いわゆる有名人の以下の言葉をどれだけ知っているかテストしてみましょう。

Who said “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.”?「国があなたのために何をしてくれるのかを問うのではなく、あなたが国のために何を成すことができるのかを問うて欲しい」と言ったのは誰でしょうか？

The answer:  John F. Kennedy答えはジョン・F・ケネディです

Who said “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”?　「千里の道も一歩から」と言ったのは誰でしょうか？

The answer:  Lao Tzu　答えは老子です。

Who said “To be, or not to be, that is the question.”?　「生きるべきか、死ぬべきか、それが問題だ」と言ったのは誰でしょうか？

The answer:  William Shakespeare　答えはウィリアム・シェイクスピアです。

Who said “Time is money.”　「時は金なり」と言ったのは誰でしょうか？

The answer:  Benjamin Franklin　答えはベンジャミン・フランクリンです。

Who said “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep, to gain what he cannot lose.”　 「失うことのできないものを得るために、持ち続けることのできないものを手放す者は愚か者ではない 」と言った人は誰でしょうか。

The answer:  Jim Elliot　答えはジム・エリオットです。

Perhaps the first four people you may recognize the quote as well as the one who said it.　おそらく最初の四人については、その言葉を言った人も、彼らの言った言葉も知っているかもしれません。

However, many of you may not be familiar with the fifth quote and Jim Elliot who said it.　 しかし、五つ目の言葉を言ったジム・エリオットについては、彼を知らない人も多いでしょう。

Jim Elliot was an American Christian missionary and one of five people killed while attempting to evangelize the Huaorani people of Ecuador.　 ジム・エリオットはアメリカ人のキリスト教宣教師で、エクアドルのフアオラニ族に伝道しようとして殺された五人のうちの一人でした。

His story was made into a movie called the “End of the Spear” that was released in 2005.　 彼の物語は、２００５年に公開された『End of the Spear』という映画にもなりました。

His quote and story are probably better known than his name.　 彼の言葉や物語は、おそらく彼の名前よりもよく知られていることでしょう。

The person in the Bible we will be looking at today is similar in that the prophecy he wrote is probably better known than him.　 今日取り上げる聖書の中の人物も、彼が書いた預言の方がおそらく彼よりもよく知られているという点で似ています。

Here are the words that God gave to him to write to the people of Judah:　 以下は、神様がユダの人々に向けて書くようにと彼に与えた言葉です：

²⁸ “It will come about after this that I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind; and your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. ²⁹ Even on the male and female servants I will pour out My Spirit in those days. ³⁰ I will display wonders in the sky and on the earth, blood, fire and columns of smoke. ³¹ The sun will be turned into darkness and the moon into blood before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes. ³² And it will come about that whoever calls on the name of the Lord will be delivered; for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be those who escape, as the Lord has said, even among the survivors whom the Lord calls.” ²⁸その後わたしはわが霊をすべての肉なる者に注ぐ。あなたがたのむすこ、娘は預言をし、あなたがたの老人たちは夢を見、あなたがたの若者たちは幻を見る。²⁹その日わたしはまたわが霊をしもべ、はしために注ぐ。³⁰わたしはまた、天と地とにしるしを示す。すなわち血と、火と、煙の柱とがあるであろう。³¹主の大いなる恐るべき日が来る前に、日は暗く、月は血に変る。³²すべて主の名を呼ぶ者は救われる。それは主が言われたように、シオンの山とエルサレムとに、のがれる者があるからである。その残った者のうちに、主のお召しになる者がある。

Do you know who wrote this?　 誰がこれを書いたのか知っていますか？

The answer:  The prophet Joel　答えは預言者ヨエルです。

This particular passage of Scripture can be found in the second chapter of the book of Joel, and are verses 28 to 32.　 この聖句は、ヨエル書の２章２８節から３２節にあります。

Interestingly, there is not much details regarding Joel, except what is written at the beginning of the book that bears his name.　 興味深いことに、ヨエルに関する詳細は、彼の名を冠した書物の冒頭に書かれていること以外、あまり知られていません。

Joel 1:1　The word of the Lord that came to Joel, the son of Pethuel: ヨエル１章１節、ペトエルの子ヨエルに臨んだ主の言葉。

Beyond knowing that Joel was the son of Pethuel, and that God had called him to be a prophet to the people of Judah, we do not know much about him.　 ヨエルがペトエルの息子であり、神様が彼をユダの人々への預言者として召されたこと以上の彼のことを私達は知りません。

Yet, God used Joel to speak His words to the people of Judah at a time that the nation was going through great difficulty.　 しかし、神様はヨエルを用いて、ユダが大きな困難の中にあった時に、ユダの人々にその言葉を語りました。

It seems that due to devastation caused by a locust infestation (Joel 1:4), the nation had experienced starvation and draught.　イナゴの大発生による荒廃のため（ヨエル１章４節）、国民は飢えと干ばつを経験していたようです。

This being fresh on their minds, Joel was calling the people to fast and pray and repent before the Lord.　 このことが記憶に新しいヨエルは、人々に断食と祈りと主の前での悔い改めを求めました。

He did this not just because of what had just happened ヨエルがこのように呼びかけたのは、単に起こったばかりの出来事のためではなく、

but because he wanted to point them to a future day of God’s judgment known as “the day of the Lord”.　「主の日」として知られる将来の神の裁きの日を指し示したかったからです。

Joel 1:14-15

¹⁴ Consecrate a fast, proclaim a solemn assembly; gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land to the house of the Lord your God, and cry out to the Lord. ¹⁵ Alas for the day! For the day of the Lord is near, and it will come as destruction from the Almighty. ¹⁴あなたがたは断食を聖別し、聖会を召集し、長老たちを集め、国の民をことごとくあなたがたの神、主の家に集め、主に向かって叫べ。¹⁵ああ、その日はわざわいだ。主の日は近く、全能者からの滅びのように来るからである。

Yet in judgment, God is merciful and gracious toward His people.　 しかし、裁きにおいても、神様はご自身の民に対して憐れみ深く、恵み深いのです。

So, even as Joel proclaims that the day of the Lord is coming, and describes in detail of what that day will be like (Joel 2:1-11), だから、ヨエルは主の日が来ると宣言し、その日がどのような日になるかを詳しく述べながら（ヨエル２章１節−１１節）、

he exhorts the people to repent and to return to God.　悔い改め、神様のもとに立ち返るようにと人々に勧めます。

Joel 2:12-13

¹² “Yet even now,” declares the Lord, “Return to Me with all your heart, and with fasting, weeping and mourning; ¹³ and rend your heart and not your garments.” Now return to the Lord your God, for He is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger, abounding in lovingkindness and relenting of evil. ¹²主は言われる、「今からでも、あなたがたは心をつくし、断食と嘆きと、悲しみとをもってわたしに帰れ。¹³あなたがたは衣服ではなく、心を裂け」。あなたがたの神、主に帰れ。主は恵みあり、あわれみあり、怒ることがおそく、いつくしみが豊かで、災を思いかえされるからである。

Joel then declares God’s promise of deliverance and the details of what that will look like (Joel 2:18-27).　 続いてヨエルは、神様の解放の約束と、それがどのようなものであるか、その詳細を宣言します（ヨエル２章１８節−２７節）。

He then promises something even greater, which is what we read earlier that involves the promise of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on all mankind.　 そして、ヨエルはさらに偉大なことを約束します。それは、私達が先に読んだ、全人類への聖霊の注ぎの約束です。

Joel 2:28-29

²⁸ “It will come about after this that I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind; and your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. ²⁹ “Even on the male and female servants I will pour out My Spirit in those days. ²⁸その後わたしはわが霊をすべての肉なる者に注ぐ。あなたがたのむすこ、娘は預言をし、あなたがたの老人たちは夢を見、あなたがたの若者たちは幻を見る。²⁹その日わたしはまたわが霊をしもべ、はしために注ぐ。

This was to be a part of what God would do leading up to the day of the Lord.　 これは、主の日に向けて神様がなさることの一部です。

Then in Joel 3:1-21, it is recorded that God will gather all the nations and judge them while at the same time bless Judah.　そしてヨエル３章１節−２１節には、神様が全ての国々を集めて裁き、同時にユダを祝福されることが記されています。

I believe that the words in the book of Joel that are the most uplifting are the promises given in Joel 2:28-29.　 ヨエル書の中で最も高揚させられる言葉は、ヨエル書２章２８節−２９節に与えられている約束だと私は思います。

For this is a promise not just for the Jews but for all people.　 これはユダヤ人だけでなく、全ての人々に対する約束だからです。

It is clear that this special time after the promised deliverance of Judah that is mentioned, will be marked by an outpouring of God’s Spirit on all people.　 先に話しましたユダの解放が約束された後の特別な時が、全ての人々に対する神様の霊の注ぎによって特徴づけられることは明らかです。

This is significant, because what was seen up until that time, was that the Holy Spirit was not poured out on all people, というのも、それまで見られたのは、聖霊がすべての人に注がれるのではなく、

but only upon certain men at certain times and only for certain duties.　特定の時に特定の人にだけ、特定の職務のためだけに注がれるということだったからです。

Some examples of this include: Joseph (Genesis 41:38), Joshua (Numbers 27:18), その例をいくつか挙げますと： ヨセフ（創世記４１章３８節）、ヨシュア（民数記２７章１８節）、

Gideon (Judges 6:34), and David (1 Samuel 16:13).　ギデオン（士師記６章３４節）、ダビデ（サムエル記上１６章１３節）などが挙げられます。

The promised outpouring of the Holy Spirit described here, was to be upon all people: men and women, old and young, ここに記されている約束された聖霊の注ぎは、老若男女を問わず、

without respect to social or economic status.　社会的・経済的地位に関係なく、すべての人々に与えられるものでした。

And we are shown through the Bible in the book of Acts, that this outpouring of the Holy Spirit was partially fulfilled on the day of Pentecost.　 そして、この聖霊の注ぎがペンテコステの日に部分的に成就したことが、聖書の使徒行伝を通して示されています。

For the apostle Peter quoted Joel 2:28-32 in explaining to those gathered in Jerusalem 使徒ペテロはヨエル２章２８節−３２節を引用して、エルサレムに集まった人々に、

of what had happened to him and Jesus’ disciples that were with him on that day.　その日に彼と彼と一緒にいたイエスの弟子達に起こったことを説明しました。

Acts 2:14-21

¹⁴ But Peter, taking his stand with the eleven, raised his voice and declared to them: “Men of Judea and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you and give heed to my words. ¹⁵ For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only the third hour of the day; ¹⁶ but this is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel: ¹⁷ ‘And it shall be in the last days,’ God says, ‘That I will pour forth of My Spirit on all mankind; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams; ¹⁸ even on My bondslaves, both men and women, I will in those days pour forth of My Spirit and they shall prophesy. ¹⁹ ‘And I will grant wonders in the sky above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke. ²⁰ ‘The sun will be turned into darkness and the moon into blood, before the great and glorious day of the Lord shall come. ²¹ ‘And it shall be that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.’” ¹⁴そこで、ペテロが十一人の者と共に立ちあがり、声をあげて人々に語りかけた。「ユダヤの人たち、ならびにエルサレムに住むすべてのかたがた、どうか、この事を知っていただきたい。わたしの言うことに耳を傾けていただきたい。¹⁵今は朝の九時であるから、この人たちは、あなたがたが思っているように、酒に酔っているのではない。¹⁶そうではなく、これは預言者ヨエルが預言していたことに外ならないのである。すなわち、¹⁷『神がこう仰せになる。終りの時には、わたしの霊をすべての人に注ごう。そして、あなたがたのむすこ娘は預言をし、若者たちは幻を見、老人たちは夢を見るであろう。¹⁸その時には、わたしの男女の僕たちにもわたしの霊を注ごう。そして彼らも預言をするであろう。¹⁹また、上では、天に奇跡を見せ、下では、地にしるしを、すなわち、血と火と立ちこめる煙とを、見せるであろう。²⁰主の大いなる輝かしい日が来る前に、日はやみに月は血に変るであろう。²¹そのとき、主の名を呼び求める者は、みな救われるであろう』。

Peter made it clear that what the people of Jerusalem were witnessing, which they mistook for drunkenness, was what Joel had spoken of.　 ペテロは、エルサレムの人々が酔っ払っていると勘違いして目撃しているのは、ヨエルが語ったことだと明言ました。

At the same time, with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, he was also claiming that they were ushering in “the last days”.　 同時に、聖霊の注ぎによって「終わりの日」の到来を告げました。

Peter also used this passage from Joel as Joel himself used it in order to stress the importance of repentance.　 ペテロもまた、ヨエル自身が悔い改めの重要性を強調するために用いたように、このヨエルの箇所を用いました。

For after quoting Joel 2:28-32, and further testifying to God’s work of salvation accomplished through Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection (Acts 2:22-32), ヨエル２章２８節から３２節を引用し、さらにイエス・キリストの死と復活によって成し遂げられた神の救いの業を証しした後（使徒２章２２節−３２節）、

Peter explained that Jesus was the One who poured out the Holy Spirit upon them (Acts 2:33-36).　ペテロは、イエスこそ聖霊を注いでくださった方であると説明しました（使徒２章３３節−３６節）。

In response to Peter’s message, the crowd asked Peter and the rest of the apostles, “what shall we do?” (Acts 2:37)　 ペテロのメッセージに対して、群衆はペテロと他の使徒たちに 「私たちはどうしたらいいのでしょうか？」と尋ねました。（使徒２章３７節）。

Peter answered them:　 ペテロは彼らにこう答えます：

Acts 2:38-39

“Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. ³⁹ For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.” ³⁸すると、ペテロが答えた、「悔い改めなさい。そして、あなたがたひとりびとりが罪のゆるしを得るために、イエス・キリストの名によって、バプテスマを受けなさい。そうすれば、あなたがたは聖霊の賜物を受けるであろう。 ³⁹この約束は、われらの主なる神の召しにあずかるすべての者、すなわちあなたがたと、あなたがたの子らと、遠くの者一同とに、与えられているものである」。

As Joel had exhorted the people of Judah in his day to repent in knowing that the day of the Lord would come, ヨエルが当時のユダの人々に、主の日が来ることを知って悔い改めるように勧めたように、

Peter exhorted the people gathered in front of him to repent and place their faith in Jesus Christ.　ペテロも彼の前に集まった人々に悔い改めてイエス・キリストを信じるように勧めたのです。

Peter also assured them that the same Holy Spirit that was poured out upon him and Jesus’ disciples on that day, ペテロはまた、その日、自分とイエスの弟子たちに注がれたのと同じ聖霊が、

would also be poured out upon those who put their faith in Jesus Christ.　イエス・キリストに信仰を置く者たちにも注がれると断言しました。

Peter then incorporated God’s promise given in Joel of: “And it shall be that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”　 そしてペテロは、ヨエル書に記されている神の約束を取り入れたのです：「主の名を呼び求める者はみな救われるであろう」

However, he said it a little differently: しかし、彼は少し違った言い方をしました：

“For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord God will call to Himself.”　「この約束は、われらの主なる神の召しにあずかるすべての者、すなわちあなたがたと、あなたがたの子らと、遠くの者一同とに、与えられているものである」

Of course, the promise that Peter is referring to here is the gift of the Holy Spirit, which is promised to those who turn to Jesus Christ in faith.　 もちろん、ペテロがここで言っている約束とは、信仰をもってイエス・キリストに立ち返る者に約束されている聖霊の賜物のことです。

Another way to put it is that not everyone will call on the name of the Lord, and thus not everyone will be saved.　 別の言い方をすれば、全ての人が主の御名を呼び求めるわけではないので、全ての人が救われるわけではないということです。

Thus, not everyone will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, but only as many as the Lord God will call to Himself.　 したがって、全ての人が聖霊の賜物を受けるわけではなく、主なる神がご自身のもとに召してくださる数だけ、聖霊が与えられるのです。

Here again is a promise that salvation and the gift of the Holy Spirit are not limited to just Jews but is available to all people and all who will call upon the Lord.　 ここにもまた、救いと聖霊の賜物はユダヤ人だけに限定されるものではなく、全て、主を呼び求める全ての人に与えられるという約束があります。

So, the question that is raised to each and every one of us here today is:　 ですから、今日ここにいる私達一人ひとりに投げかけられる質問はこういうことになります：

Have you called on the name of the Lord to be saved?　あなたは救われるために主の御名を呼び求めましたか？

Have you repented and placed your faith in Jesus Christ?　あなたは悔い改めてイエス・キリストを信じましたか？

Have you received the gift of the Holy Spirit?　あなたは聖霊の賜物を受けましたか？

Since all three questions are inter-related, you can only answer yes to all three or no to all three.　この三つの質問はすべて相互に関連しているので、三つ全てにイエスと答えるか、三つ全てにノーと答えるかしかありません。

So, what is your answer to these three questions?　では、この三つの質問に対するあなたの答えは何でしょうか？

The Apostle Paul also quoted Joel 2:32 and applied it to spiritual salvation.　 使徒パウロもまた、ヨエル書２章３２節を引用し、霊的救いに適用しました。

Romans 10:11-13

¹¹ For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes in Him will not be disappointed.” ¹² For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call on Him; ¹³ for “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.” ¹¹聖書は、「すべて彼を信じる者は、失望に終ることがない」と言っている。¹²ユダヤ人とギリシヤ人との差別はない。同一の主が万民の主であって、彼を呼び求めるすべての人を豊かに恵んで下さるからである。¹³なぜなら、「主の御名を呼び求める者は、すべて救われる」とあるからである。

Paul quoted Joel 2:32 here, to mean that just as God will deliver all who call on Him in that future day of the Lord, パウロはここでヨエル２章３２節を引用して、神が将来の主の日に呼び求める全ての人を救い出してくださるように、

so He will deliver all who call on Him for salvation from sin.　罪からの救いのために神を呼び求める全ての人を救い出してくださることについて触れています。

And by doing so, they will avoid the terrible day when all unbelievers will be judged by God and suffer condemnation for their unbelief.　 そうすることで、全ての不信仰者が神によって裁かれ、その不信仰のために断罪を受ける恐ろしい日を避けることができるのです。

So, though we do not know much about the prophet Joel, the apostles Peter and Paul quoted Joel in their presentation of the Gospel message to people.預言者ヨエルについて私たちはあまり知りませんが、使徒ペテロとパウロは人々に福音のメッセージを伝える際にヨエルの言葉を引用しました。

So, what can we learn from Joel’s life?　では、私たちはヨエルの生涯から何を学ぶことができるのだろうか？

God’s message is greater than His messenger.　 神のメッセージは神の使徒よりも偉大です。

Not many of us know much about Joel.　 ヨエルについて詳しく知っている人は多くありません。

As far as the prophets of the Old Testament are concerned, Joel is not one of the major prophets.　 旧約聖書の預言者に関して言えば、ヨエルは大預言者の一人ではありません。

In fact, his book is part of what is called the minor prophets.　 実際、彼の著書は小預言者と呼ばれる者の一人なのです。

Beyond knowing his name, his father’s name, and the fact that he was a prophet, we know very little about him.　 彼の名前と父親の名前、そして彼が預言者であったという事実以外、私達は彼についてほとんど何も知らないのです。

Yet, God called Joel to be a prophet and proclaimed terrible and wonderful things through him.　 しかし、神はヨエルを預言者として召され、彼を通して恐ろしいこと、素晴らしいことを告げ知らせられたのです。

Through Joel, we are warned of the great and terrible day of the Lord, ヨエルを通して、私達は主の大いなる恐るべき日について警告され、

and therefore to prepare ourselves for that day by repenting and living rightly with God.　それゆえ、悔い改めて神と共に正しく生きることによって、その日に備えるのです。

Through Joel, we are also promised of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon all people who will call on the name of the Lord for salvation.　 ヨエルを通して、救いを求めて主の御名を呼ぶ全ての人々に聖霊が注がれることも約束されているのです。

Though Joel was a minor prophet and he is not as well-known as some other prophets and other people in the Bible, what he wrote is great and powerful.　 ヨエルは小預言者であり、他の預言者や聖書に登場する人々ほど有名ではありませんが、彼が書いたことは偉大で力強いものです。

Likewise, the Gospel message that is entrusted to us to share with others is greater than we are.　 同じように、他の人々に伝えるために私達に託された福音のメッセージは、私達よりも偉大なものなのです。

We do not have to become great messengers in order to proclaim the Gospel message.　 福音のメッセージを宣べ伝えるために、私達が偉大なメッセンジャーになる必要はありません。

In fact, the Gospel message has been faithfully proclaimed from one person to the next for over 2000 years since the Day of Pentecost by people 事実、福音のメッセージは、イエス・キリストを信じることによって聖霊の賜物を受けた人々によって、

who have received the gift of the Holy Spirit through placing their faith in Jesus Christ.　ペンテコステの日以来２０００年以上にわたって、一人から一人へと忠実に宣べ伝えられてきたのです。

Do we know who all these people are?　 これらの人々が誰なのか、私達は知っているでしょうか？

Yes, some of them are written about in books regarding the spread of Christianity and Church history.　 そうです、キリスト教の普及や教会の歴史に関する本に書かれている人もいます。

Some of the names you may be familiar with would be like Saint Patrick, John Wesley, D.L. Moody, and Billy Graham.　 聖パトリック、ジョン・ウェスレー、D.L.ムーディー、ビリー・グラハムなど、皆さんがよく知っている名前もあるでしょう。

Even these so-called famous Christian evangelists, some of you may not know.　 いわゆる有名なキリスト教伝道者でも、知らない人もいるでしょう。

In fact, I don’t even remember the name of the person who shared the Gospel message to me when I was at a summer camp at the Tokyo Biblical Seminary in elementary school.　 実際、私も小学生の頃、東京聖書学院のサマーキャンプに参加した際、福音のメッセージを伝えてくれた人の名前すら覚えていません。

I know I had a special encounter with God and a clear understanding of what Jesus did for me through the message that was given, 神との特別な出会いがあり、与えられたメッセージを通してイエス様が私のためにしてくださったことを明確に理解したことは知っているのに、

and yet I don’t remember the messenger.　そのメッセンジャーを覚えていないのです。

Some of you may know Pastor Rick Iwanaga.　 リック・イワナガ牧師をご存知の方がおられるでしょう。

He led me to Christ as my cabin counselor at the JEMS Mount Hermon Junior High Camp in 1979.　 １９７９年、JEMSマウントハーモン・ジュニア・ハイ・キャンプのキャビン・カウンセラーとして彼は私をキリストに導いてくださいました。

But most of you probably don’t know him.　 しかし、ほとんどの方は彼のことを知らないでしょう。

There are countless others that we do not know of by name who have faithfully 他にも私達が名前を知らないだけで、イエス・キリストの福音を忠実に、

and sacrificially proclaimed the Gospel of Jesus Christ from one generation to the next.　 　犠牲を払って、世代を超えて宣べ伝えてきた人々が数え切れないほどいます。

We are here today because of these people.　 私達が今日ここにいるのは、こうした人達のおかげなのです。

So, what is the Gospel message?　では、福音のメッセージとは何でしょうか？

1 Corinthians 15:1-5

¹ Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, ² by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain. ³ For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, ⁴ and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, ⁵ and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. ¹兄弟たちよ。わたしが以前あなたがたに伝えた福音、あなたがたが受けいれ、それによって立ってきたあの福音を、思い起してもらいたい。²もしあなたがたが、いたずらに信じないで、わたしの宣べ伝えたとおりの言葉を固く守っておれば、この福音によって救われるのである。³わたしが最も大事なこととしてあなたがたに伝えたのは、わたし自身も受けたことであった。すなわちキリストが、聖書に書いてあるとおり、わたしたちの罪のために死んだこと、⁴そして葬られたこと、聖書に書いてあるとおり、三日目によみがえったこと、⁵ケパに現れ、次に、十二人に現れたことである。

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is precisely that!　 イエス・キリストの福音はまさにこのことなのです！

It is good news concerning what Jesus Christ has done in bringing about our salvation.　それは、イエス・キリストが私達の救いをもたらすためにしてくださったことに関する良い知らせです。

It is centered on the fact that Christ died for our sins, was buried, and that He was raised on the third day, all according to the Scriptures.　 その中心は、キリストが私達の罪のために死なれ、葬られ、三日目によみがえられたという事実です。

And as explained in the Bible, it was all done to pay for the wages of our sin.　 そして聖書で説明されているように、それは全て、私達の罪の代価を支払うためになされたのです。

Romans 6:23

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. 罪の支払う報酬は死である。しかし神の賜物は、わたしたちの主キリスト・イエスにおける永遠のいのちである。

Someone once said about Jesus:　 ある人がイエス様についてこう言いました：

“He came to pay a debt He did not owe, because we owed a debt we could not pay.”　 「私達が支払うことのできない負債を負ったので、彼は自ら負っていない負債を払うために来られた」

It is precisely because we could not undo our own wrong and atone for our own sins that God sent His Son Jesus into this world.　 私たちが自らの過ちを取り消すことができず、自らの罪を償うことができなかったからこそ、神は御子イエスをこの世に遣わされたのです。

John 3:16

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.”　 「神はそのひとり子を賜わったほどに、この世を愛して下さった。それは御子を信じる者がひとりも滅びないで、永遠の命を得るためである」。

Martin Luther famously called John 3:16 “the heart of the Bible, the Gospel in miniature.”　 マルティン・ルターは、ヨハネによる福音書３章１６節を「聖書の核心、福音の縮図 」と呼びました。

And we are invited to embrace this good news, that is Jesus Christ, by believing in Him. 　そして私達は、イエス・キリストを信じることによって、この良き知らせを受け入れるように招かれています。

Romans 10:8-13

⁸ But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”—that is, the word of faith which we are preaching, ⁹ that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; ¹⁰ for with the heart a person believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in salvation.　 ⁸では、なんと言っているか。「言葉はあなたの近くにある。あなたの口にあり、心にある」。この言葉とは、わたしたちが宣べ伝えている信仰の言葉である。⁹すなわち、自分の口で、イエスは主であると告白し、自分の心で、神が死人の中からイエスをよみがえらせたと信じるなら、あなたは救われる。¹⁰なぜなら、人は心に信じて義とされ、口で告白して救われるからである。

This afternoon, we are blessed to have the baptism ceremony of Mayuri and Seiji Ishitsuka.　 本日午後、石塚真由里さんと石塚誠司さんの洗礼式が執り行われます。

It is precisely because of their faith in God’s Son Jesus Christ that Mayuri and Seiji will be receiving baptism this afternoon.　 真由里さんと誠司さんが今日の午後に洗礼を受けるのは、まさに神の御子イエス・キリストへの信仰のゆえです。

They are getting baptized because they have faith in Jesus as the One who has died for their sins and rose from the dead, 二人が洗礼を受けるのは、イエス様が自分たちの罪のために死なれ、死からよみがえられた方であるという信仰を持ち、

and are making a public confession of their faith in Him.　イエス様への信仰を公に告白するためです。

They believe in Jesus as their Savior, and in obedience to Him as their Lord, they are getting baptized.　 彼らはイエス様を救い主として信じ、その主であるイエス様に従い、バプテスマを受けるのです。

Because Jesus commands us to be baptized.　 イエス様がバプテスマを受けるように命じているからです。

Matthew 28:18-20

¹⁸ And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. ¹⁹ Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, ²⁰ teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”　 ¹⁸イエスは彼らに近づいてきて言われた、「わたしは、天においても地においても、いっさいの権威を授けられた。¹⁹それゆえに、あなたがたは行って、すべての国民を弟子として、父と子と聖霊との名によって、彼らにバプテスマを施し、²⁰あなたがたに命じておいたいっさいのことを守るように教えよ。見よ、わたしは世の終りまで、いつもあなたがたと共にいるのである」。

Jesus also commands us to go make disciples of all the nations and to teach them to observe all that He commanded us.　 イエス様はまた、すべての国に出て行き、人々を弟子とし、イエス様の命じられたことをすべて守るように教えなさいとも命じておられます。

Fulfilling what Jesus commanded to us was precisely the thought behind Jim Elliot’s quote:　 イエス様が私達に命じたことを果たすことは、まさにジム・エリオットの引用の背後にある考えです：

“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep, to gain what he cannot lose.”「失うことのできないものを得るために、保つことのできないものを与える者は愚か者ではない」

Jim Elliot had a deep understanding of the temporal nature of that which we hold dearly to here on earthジム・エリオットは、私達がこの地上で大切に抱いているものの一時的な性質と、

and the eternal value of life found in Jesus Christ.　イエス・キリストに見出される命の永遠の価値を深く理解していたのです。

Thus, he had an unwavering commitment to spreading the gospel and a passion for sharing the love of Christ, even in the face of danger and persecution.　 そのため、彼は福音を広めることへの揺るぎない献身と、危険や迫害に直面してもキリストの愛を伝えることへの情熱を持っていました。

How do we make disciples of Jesus Christ?　 私たちはどのようにしてイエス・キリストの弟子を作るのでしょうか？

By proclaiming Him.  By sharing the Gospel, that is the Good News concerning Him.彼を宣べ伝えるのです。 福音、つまり彼に関する福音を伝えることによってです。

That is the great message that has been entrusted to all of us who profess faith in Jesus Christ.　 それは、イエス・キリストへの信仰を公言する私達、すべてに託された偉大なメッセージです。

No one needs to remember that we told them about Jesus Christ, 私達がイエス・キリストのことを話したことを誰も覚えている必要はなく、

they just have to remember that Jesus Christ is the message and put their faith in Him.　ただイエス・キリストがメッセージであることを覚え、イエス・キリストに信仰を置くだけでいいのです。

So, let us be messengers for our great Savior and Lord Jesus Christ, さぁ、私達は偉大な救い主であり主であるイエス・キリストのためのメッセンジャーとなり、

and proclaim His great message (His gospel and commandments) with the help of the Holy Spirit.　聖霊の助けを借りて、イエス・キリストの偉大なメッセージ（福音と戒め）を宣べ伝えましょう。
