Daniel: Man of Integrity
ダニエル：誠実な男

Last Sunday, we had some people share about their experiences at this year’s Shuyokai. 先週の日曜日、今年の修養会での体験を何人かに話してもらいました。

As was mentioned last Sunday, one of the exercises to do given to the Shuyokai attendees was an assessment of one’s own health. 先週の日曜日にも触れましたが、修養会の参加者に与えられた査定のひとつに、自分自身の健康状態の評価がありました。

At the top of the page was the heading and question: “What is your name?” そのページの一番上に、見出しと質問にこうありました： 「あなたの名前は何ですか？」

This question was asked by Jesus in Mark 5:9. この質問はマルコによる福音書５章９節で、イエス様が問われたものです。

Mark 5:9（マルコ５章９節）

And He was asking him, “What is your name?” And he said to Him, “My name is Legion; for we are many.” また彼に、「なんという名前か」と尋ねられると、「レギオンと言います。大ぜいなのですから」と答えた。The context of this passage is that Jesus and His disciples had just landed on the other side of the sea of Galilee in Gentile territory known as the country of the Gerasenes (Mark 5:1). この箇所の背景は、イエス様と弟子たちがガリラヤの海の向こう側、ゲラサ人の国として知られる異邦人の領地に上陸したところでした（マルコ5:1）。

Jesus was then met immediately by a man from the tombs with an unclean spirit. イエス様はその時すぐに、汚れた霊を持った墓場の男に出会いました。

This man could not be subdued by any chains, though he had been bound with shackles and chains (Mark 5:2-3). この男は、足かせや鎖で縛られていましたが、どんな鎖も彼を制することができませんでした（マルコ５章２節−３節）。

This man with an unclean spirit bowed down before Jesus and shouted with a loud voice: この汚れた霊の男はイエス様の前にひれ伏し、大声でこう叫びました：

Mark 5:7（マルコ５章７節）

“What business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God, do not torment me!”「いと高き神の子イエスよ、あなたはわたしとなんの係わりがあるのです。神に誓ってお願いします。どうぞ、わたしを苦しめないでください」。

It was in response to this that Jesus had asked the man, “What is your name?” イエス様がその人に「あなたの名は何か 」と尋ねたのは、そのことに対する応答でした。

However, the man was not able to give Jesus his name but instead explained his condition. しかし、男はイエス様に自分の名前を告げることができず、代わりに自分の状態を説明したのです。

The man answered, “My name is Legion; for we are many” その男は「わたしの名はレギオン、わたしたちは多いからです」と答え、

indicating that there was a large number of evil spirits inside of him.彼の内には多くの悪霊が宿っていることを言い表しました。

This person should have originally had a name, but when asked what his name was, a name did not come out. この人には本来名前があるはずなのですが、名前を聞かれても名前は出てこなかったのです。

Instead, he responded that the evil spirits are “many!”　その代わりに、彼は悪霊が「たくさんいる！」と答えたのです。

The person’s inner being was overwhelmed by multiple evil spirits.　その人の内面は複数の悪霊に圧倒されていたのです。

So, based on this passage of Scripture, the exercise given to us was to examine our hearts closely to see who truly we are before God.　 そこで、この聖句に基づき、私たちに与えられた査定は、私たちの心をよく調べ、神の御前で本当に私たちが何者であるかを確認することでした。

The following three sets of questions were asked of us as part of this exercise:　 この練習の一環として、次の３つの質問が私たちに投げかけられました：

１）　What can you compare your heart to?  What does it look like?  Try drawing a picture.　 自分の心を何に例えますか？ あなたの心は何に似ていますか？ 絵を描いてみてください。

２）What is your heart like? What are you doing?　 あなたの心はどんな感じですか？ あなたは何をしていますか？

３）　Where is Jesus Christ in your heart?  What is He like?  What is your perception of Him?　 イエス・キリストはあなたの心のどこにいますか？ 彼はどのような方ですか？ あなたはイエス・キリストをどのように見ていますか？

It was interesting to hear the responses to these questions by some of the people at Shuyokai.　 修養会に参加した何人かの人々が、これらの質問に対してどのように答えたかを聞くのは興味深いことでした。

One of the ladies described her heart condition like a flower field where she was joyfully running around in it.　 ある女性は、自分の心の状態をお花畑を喜んで走り回っているようだと表現しました。

Then, the guest speaker Mrs. Yumi Ikeda Morse asked this lady, “Where is Jesus Christ in the flower field?”　 そして、ゲストスピーカーの池田モース由美さんは、この女性にこう尋ねました。

For me, this was an eye-opening moment.　 私にとって、これは目からウロコの瞬間でした。

Then, later on, one of the men in my small group described his heart as being like scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef.　 その後、私のスモール・グループの男性の一人が、自分の心をグレート・バリア・リーフでのスキューバ・ダイビングのようだと表現しました。

Interestingly, my first thought when I heard that was:  What about sharks?　 興味深いことに、それを聞いて私が最初に思ったのはこうでした： サメはどうだろう？

Then, I had a secondary thought:  If Jesus is with me, then it doesn’t matter how beautiful or horrible my surroundings may look.　もしイエス様が私と共にいてくださるなら、私の周囲がどんなに美しく見えようと、どんなに恐ろしく見えようと関係ありません。

I could be in the midst of an ominous storm, but if Jesus is with me, there is calm and peace.　 不吉な嵐の中にいても、イエス様が共にいてくださるなら、静けさと平安があります。

The man with the unclean spirits that met Jesus was cleansed of the many evil spirits that were within him and had tormented him for a long time.　 イエス様に出会った汚れた霊を持つ男は、彼の内にあり、長い間彼を苦しめていた多くの悪霊からきよめられたのです。

Mrs. Yumi Ikeda Morse pointed out the complete work of healing that Jesus brought upon this man.　 池田モース由美さんは、イエス様がこの男にもたらした完全な癒しの業を指摘しました。

The man who was naked was now clothed, indicating that he regained social skills.　 裸であった男が服を着るようになったのは、彼が社会性を取り戻したことを示しています。

The man came to his senses and was in his right mind, indicating that he regained mental stability.　 彼は正気を取り戻し、精神的な安定を取り戻しました。

The man was sitting up, indicating that he was in a calm and safe state.　 その男が座っていることは、彼が落ち着いて安全な状態にあることを示していました。

He was now trusting and obedient to God.　彼は神様に信頼し、従順になったのです。

We see here how Jesus Christ restored the whole person, イエス・キリストがどのようにして全人格を回復されたのか、私たちはここで見ることができます。

for He restored the man’s body, mind, spirituality, and sociality.　イエス様がこの男の身体、心、霊性、社会性を回復されたからです。

This man wanted to follow Jesus when he came to his senses, but Jesus said to him, この男は、正気に戻ったイエス様に従おうとしましたが、イエス様は彼に言われました、

“Go home to your people and report to them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He had mercy on you.” (Mark 5:19) 「あなたの家族のもとに帰って、主がどんなに大きなことをしてくださったか、またどんなにあわれんでくださったか、それを知らせなさい」。 （マルコ５章１９節）

The man did as Jesus said and shared what great things Jesus had done for him throughout that region (Mark 5:20).　 その男はイエス様の言われたとおりにし、イエス様がその地方で自分のためにしてくださった素晴らしいことを分かち合いました（マルコ５章２０節）。

Now that the man had a relationship with God and Jesus in his heart, he was able to trust and obey Him even when Jesus was not with him physically.　 この男は、心の中に神様とイエス様との関係を持ったので、イエス様が肉体的に彼と一緒にいなくても、イエス様を信頼し従うことができました。

There is no greater blessing than to have a relationship with God and Jesus in our heart, and to experience His presence in our lives.　 心の中に神様とイエス様との関係を持ち、私たちの生活の中にイエス様の臨在を経験することほど大きな祝福はありません。

I have shared all of this so far this morning, because I believe that the person we are about to look at truly knew of this blessing in his life.　 今朝、このようなことをお話ししたのは、私たちがこれから見ていく人物は、自分の人生におけるこの祝福を本当に知っていたと私は信じているからです。

If this person were asked the question, “What is your name?”, he would with confidence respond, “My name is Daniel”.　 もしこの人物が「あなたの名前は何ですか」と質問されたら、彼は自信を持って「私の名前はダニエルです」と答えるでしょう。

Daniel means “God is my judge” or, more interpretively, “God rules me”.　 ダニエルとは「神は私の裁判官である」という意味であり、より解釈すれば「神が私を支配している」ということです。

And that is how Daniel, who is the author of the Book of Daniel, truly lived his life.　 ダニエル書の著者であるダニエルは、まさにそのように生きたのです。

So, today, we will look at Daniel, who was a man of integrity, who continually trusted in and obeyed God and was greatly comforted by God’s presence and rule in his life.　 　そこで今日は、神に信頼し従い続け、その人生における神の存在と支配によって大いに慰められた、誠実な人であったダニエルを見ていきましょう。

Daniel lived in the sixth century before the birth of Jesus.　 ダニエルが生きたのは、イエス様が誕生する６世紀前でした。

Around that time, the following things were taking place in different parts of the world:　 その頃、世界各地で次のようなことが起こっていました：

Construction began on the Acropolis in Athens, the Mayan civilization was flourishing in Mexico,　 アテネではアクロポリスの建設が始まり、メキシコではマヤ文明が栄え、

Aesop wrote his fables, Confucius and Siddhartha Gautama (a.k.a., Buddha) lived,　 イソップが寓話を書き、孔子とシッダールタ・ゴータマ（仏陀）が生き、

and the Phoenicians made the first known sea journey around Africa.　 フェニキア人がアフリカを初めて航海したことが知られています。

However, the Book of Daniel records what took place primarily in Mesopotamia during that time period, as well as the future kingdoms that would arise after that time.　しかし、ダニエル書には、その時代に主にメソポタミアで起こったことや、その後に起こるであろう将来の王国が記録されています。

Some critics have doubted that the Daniel described in the book actually wrote the book, because of the amazing prophecies found in it.　ダニエル書には驚くべき預言が記されているため、この書に記されているダニエルが実際にこの書を書いたと疑う批評家もいます。

However, any doubts of Daniel being the author of the Book of Daniel can be erased by Jesus’ words regarding the authorship of the book.　 しかし、ダニエル書の著者がダニエルであるという疑念は、ダニエル書の著者に関するイエス様の言葉によって消し去ることができます。

Matthew 24:15（マタイ２４章１５節）

“Therefore when you see the abomination of desolation which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand),” 「預言者ダニエルによって言われた荒らす憎むべき者が、聖なる場所に立つのを見たならば（読者よ、悟れ）」

Jesus made it clear that what was written in the Book of Daniel that He was referencing was indeed the words of Daniel the prophet.　 イエス様は、ダニエル書に書かれていることが、預言者ダニエルの言葉であることを明らかにされました。

The specific reference Jesus made here was taken from Daniel 9:27 and 11:31 and 12:11.　 イエス様がここで言及したのは、ダニエル書９章２７節、１１章３１節、１２章１１節からの引用です。

The book of Daniel can be divided into two distinct sections.　ダニエル書は２つの章に分けられます。

Chapters 1 to 6 describe Daniel’s life and interactions with the kings that he served and are written in chronological order.　 １章から６章までは、ダニエルの生涯と、彼が仕えた王たちとの交流について書かれており、年代順に書かれています。

Chapters 7 to 12 contain the visions experienced by Daniel arranged primarily by similar subject matter.　 第７章から第１２章までは、ダニエルが経験した幻が、主に同じような主題によって並べられています。

Throughout the book, one can see the superiority of the God of Israel over the so-called gods (manmade idols) of Mesopotamia.　 この書物を通して、メソポタミアのいわゆる神々（人が作った偶像）に対するイスラエルの神の優越性を見ることができます。

Through the visions given to Daniel, God also made it clear that although the Babylonians had been the means of punishment for Israel, they too will be punished.　 ダニエルに与えられた幻を通して、神様はまた、バビロン人がイスラエルに対する懲罰の手段であったが、彼らも懲罰を受けることを明らかにされました。

And furthermore, the visions revealed the rulers and kingdoms that would come after the Babylonians, さらに、その幻は、バビロン人の後に来る支配者と王国、

and even of the time when the Messiah’s work would begin and in the latter days God would establish a permanent kingdom.　さらにはメシヤの業が始まり、後の世に神が恒久的な王国を築かれる時についても明らかにしたのです。

In many ways, these visions further strengthened Daniel’s faith in God, reminding him that God’s rule was above and beyond all the kingdoms of the world.　 さまざまな意味で、これらの幻はダニエルの神への信仰をさらに強め、神の支配が世界のすべての王国の上にあり、それを超えていることを思い起こさせたのです。

Thus, Daniel fully placed his life in the hands of God, knowing that God was in firm control of all things.　こうして、ダニエルは自分の人生を完全に神の手に委ね、神がすべてのことをしっかりと支配しておられることを知ったのです。

So, let us look at Daniel, and learn from him of the blessings of being ruled by God.　それでは、ダニエルを見つつ、神様に支配されることの祝福を彼から学びましょう。

Let’s begin by looking at Daniel when he was a young man.　 まず、若い頃のダニエルから見てみましょう。

Daniel was brought to Babylon as part of the first group of those who were taken from Jerusalem in the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king Judah (Daniel 1:1).　 ダニエルは、ユダ王エホヤキムの治世の第三年にエルサレムから連れ去られた人々の第一陣の一員としてバビロンに連れて行かれました（ダニエル１章１節）。

He was one of the youths who were part of the royal family and of the nobles (Daniel 1:3).　彼は王族や貴族の若者たちの一人でした（ダニエル１章３節）。

And he was chosen along with others because of his intelligence, wisdom, and ability for serving in the king’s court, and was taught the literature and language of the Chaldeans (Daniel 1:4).　 そして、その知性、知恵、王の宮廷で仕える能力のゆえに、他の者たちと共に選ばれ、カルデヤ人の文学と言葉を教えられました（ダニエル１章４節）。

He was treated well and received three years of education in order to enter the king’s personal service (Daniel 1:5).　 彼は厚遇され、王の個人的な奉仕に入るために３年間の教育を受けました（ダニエル１章５節）。

Daniel’s friends who were with him were Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, and they all were assigned new names (Daniel 1:6-7).　 一緒にいたダニエルの友人たちは、ハナニヤ、ミシャエル、アザリヤであり、彼らにはみな新しい名前が与えられました（ダニエル１章６節−７節）。

However, although they were treated well, their faith in God and obedience to His commandments were challenged right away.　彼らはよき待遇を受けたのですが、神への信仰と神の戒めへの従順さがすぐに問われることになりました。

This had to do with their diet, for Daniel and his friends knew that the king’s choice food would not be served in accordance with the Mosaic Law. 　というのも、ダニエルとその友人たちは、王が選んだ食べ物がモーセの律法に従って出されないことを知っていたからです。

So, we see what Daniel decided to do regarding this matter.　ダニエルがこの問題についてどう対処したかを見てみましょう。

Daniel 1:8-13（ダニエル書１章８節—１３節）

⁸ But Daniel made up his mind that he would not defile himself with the king’s choice food or with the wine which he drank; so he sought permission from the commander of the officials that he might not defile himself. ⁹ Now God granted Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the commander of the officials, ¹⁰ and the commander of the officials said to Daniel, “I am afraid of my lord the king, who has appointed your food and your drink; for why should he see your faces looking more haggard than the youths who are your own age? Then you would make me forfeit my head to the king.” ¹¹ But Daniel said to the overseer whom the commander of the officials had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, ¹² “Please test your servants for ten days, and let us be given some vegetables to eat and water to drink. ¹³ Then let our appearance be observed in your presence and the appearance of the youths who are eating the king’s choice food; and deal with your servants according to what you see.” ⁸ダニエルは王の食物と、王の飲む酒とをもって、自分を汚すまいと、心に思い定めたので、自分を汚させることのないように、宦官の長に求めた。⁹神はダニエルをして、宦官の長の前に、恵みとあわれみとを得させられたので、¹⁰宦官の長はダニエルに言った、「わが主なる王は、あなたがたの食べ物と、飲み物とを定められたので、わたしはあなたがたの健康の状態が、同年輩の若者たちよりも悪いと、王が見られることを恐れるのです。そうすればあなたがたのために、わたしのこうべが、王の前に危くなるでしょう」。¹¹そこでダニエルは宦官の長がダニエル、ハナニヤ、ミシャエルおよびアザリヤの上に立てた家令に言った、¹²「どうぞ、しもべらを十日の間ためしてください。わたしたちにただ野菜を与えて食べさせ、水を飲ませ、¹³そしてわたしたちの顔色と、王の食物を食べる若者の顔色とをくらべて見て、あなたの見るところにしたがって、しもべらを扱ってください」。

Daniel sought to obey God while still remaining in subjection to those who had authority over him in the country of his exile.　 ダニエルは、追放された国で自分に対して権威を持つ人々に服従しながらも、神様に従おうとしました。

Notice how God was with Daniel in the manner.　 神様がどのようにダニエルと共におられたかに注目してほしいと思います。

For God granted Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the commander of the officials.　 神様は司令官の目の前で、ダニエルに好意とあわれみをお与えになったからです。

Notice how Daniel handled the concern that the commander of the officials had with his request.　 ダニエルが司令官の願いに対して抱いた懸念を、どのように解決したかに注目してみてください。

Daniel took the concerns of the commander seriously, yet he handled the matter diplomatically and in a practical manner.　 ダニエルは司令官の懸念を真剣に受け止めながらも、外交的に、現実的に問題を解決したのです。

He let the commander be the judge of whether this food arrangement over Daniel and his friends could continue on after a ten days trial period.　 ダニエルは、ダニエルとその友人をめぐるこの食事の取り決めが、１０日間の試用期間の後に続けられるかどうかを、指揮官に判断させたのです。

And after the end of the ten days, the commander saw that their appearance seemed better and they were fatter than all the youths who had been eating the king’s choice food (Daniel 1:15). 十日の終りになってみると、彼らの顔色は王の食物を食べたすべての若者よりも美しく、また肉も肥え太っていた。（ダニエル書１章１５節）

Thus, Daniel and his friends were allowed to not partake of the king’s choice food and wine, and to continue to eat just vegetables and drink water.　 こうして、ダニエルとその友人たちは、王が選んだ食べ物とぶどう酒を口にせず、野菜だけを食べ、水を飲み続けることが許されました。

In regard to how God was with Daniel and his friends and gave them favor with the king is noted in the following verses.　 神様がどのようにダニエルとその友人たちと共におられ、王に好意を持たれたかは、次の節に記されています。

Daniel 1:17-21（ダニエル書１章１７節—２１節）

¹⁷ As for these four youths, God gave them knowledge and intelligence in every branch of literature and wisdom; Daniel even understood all kinds of visions and dreams. ¹⁸ Then at the end of the days which the king had specified for presenting them, the commander of the officials presented them before Nebuchadnezzar. ¹⁹ The king talked with them, and out of them all not one was found like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah; so they entered the king’s personal service. ²⁰ As for every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king consulted them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and conjurers who were in all his realm. ²¹ And Daniel continued until the first year of Cyrus the king. ¹⁷この四人の者には、神は知識を与え、すべての文学と知恵にさとい者とされた。ダニエルはまたすべての幻と夢とを理解した。¹⁸さて、王が命じたところの若者を召し入れるまでの日数が過ぎたので、宦官の長は彼らをネブカデネザルの前に連れていった。¹⁹王が彼らと語ってみると、彼らすべての中にはダニエル、ハナニヤ、ミシャエル、アザリヤにならぶ者がなかったので、彼らは王の前にはべることとなった。²⁰王が彼らにさまざまの事を尋ねてみると、彼らは知恵と理解において、全国の博士、法術士にまさること十倍であった。²¹ダニエルはクロス王の元年まで仕えていた。

Two particular things are of note in what is written here in this passage of Scripture.　 この聖句に書かれていることで、特に注目すべきことが二つあります。

First, we can see that God gave to Daniel and his friends knowledge and intelligence in every branch of literature and wisdom.　第一に、神様はダニエルとその友人たちに、あらゆる分野の文学と知恵に関する知識と知性をお与えになったことです。

However, to Daniel, God also gave him the ability to understand all kinds of visions and dreams. そして神様はダニエルに、あらゆる種類の幻や夢を理解する能力もお与えになりました。

This becomes evident throughout the rest of the Book of Daniel.　 このことは、ダニエル書の残りの部分を通して明らかになります。

Secondly, we see the longevity of Daniel’s service to the kings during his exile.　 第二に、ダニエルが亡命中の王たちに長く仕えていたことがわかります。

It says that Daniel continued until the first year of Cyrus the king.　 ダニエルはクロス王の元年まで仕えたとあります。

This means that Daniel served under four different kings over a period of about 70 years.　 つまり、ダニエルは約７０年間、４人の王の下で仕えたことになります。

Daniel was first and foremost a faithful servant of God, who because of his faith in God and obedience to Him, ダニエルは何よりもまず、神への忠実な僕であり、神への信仰と従順さのゆえに、

found favor as a trusted advisor to the kings that he served.　仕えた王たちの信頼できる助言者として寵愛を受けたのです。

In all actuality, throughout his 70 years of serving these kings, Daniel was one of the top leaders in the land of his exile.　実際、ダニエルはこれらの王たちに仕えた７０年間を通して、追放された土地でトップリーダーの一人でした。

However, Daniel never let this power and prestige make him proud or become mean.　 しかし、ダニエルはこの権力と名声に慢心したり、卑屈になったりすることはありませんでした。

He maintained his integrity in all that he did because he humbly served God who he truly knew ruled over his life.　 自分の人生を支配しておられることを本当に知っておられる神様に謙虚に仕えたからです。

We can see this throughout the rest of the Book of Daniel.　 このことは、ダニエル書の残りの部分を通して見ることができます。

When King Nebuchadnezzar had a dream and none of his “wise men” could recall and interpret his dream, ネブカデネザル王が夢を見たとき、彼の 「知恵ある者たち 」の誰もその夢を思い起こし、解釈することができなかったので、

he threatened to kill all of them, which included Daniel and his friends (Daniel 2:1-13).　王はダニエルとその友人を含む彼ら全員を殺すと脅しました（ダニエル書２章１節−１３節）。

This is when we see Daniel take action.  We see how he handled himself under pressure.　 ダニエルが行動を起こしたのはこの時です。 彼がプレッシャーの中でどのように対処したかを見ることができます。

Daniel 2:14-19a（ダニエル書２章１４節—１９節）

¹⁴ Then Daniel replied with discretion and discernment to Arioch, the captain of the king’s bodyguard, who had gone forth to slay the wise men of Babylon; ¹⁵ he said to Arioch, the king’s commander, “For what reason is the decree from the king so urgent?” Then Arioch informed Daniel about the matter. ¹⁶ So Daniel went in and requested of the king that he would give him time, in order that he might declare the interpretation to the king. ¹⁷ Then Daniel went to his house and informed his friends, Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah, about the matter, ¹⁸ so that they might request compassion from the God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that Daniel and his friends would not be destroyed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. ¹⁹ Then the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a night vision. ¹⁴そして王の侍衛の長アリオクが、バビロンの知者らを殺そうと出てきたので、ダニエルは思慮と知恵とをもってこれに応答した。¹⁵すなわち王の高官アリオクに「どうして王はそんなにきびしい命令を出されたのですか」と言った。アリオクがその事をダニエルに告げ知らせると、¹⁶ダニエルは王のところへはいっていって、その解き明かしを示すために、しばらくの時を与えられるよう王に願った。¹⁷それからダニエルは家に帰り、同僚のハナニヤ、ミシャエルおよびアザリヤにこの事を告げ知らせ、¹⁸共にこの秘密について天の神のあわれみを請い、ダニエルとその同僚とが、他のバビロンの知者と共に滅ぼされることのないように求めた。¹⁹ついに夜の幻のうちにこの秘密がダニエルに示された

Notice how Daniel approached this delicate matter: with discretion and discernment.　 ダニエルがこの微妙な問題にどのように対処したかに注目してください。

He was not out of control but calm in dealing with this matter.　 彼はこの問題に対処する際、暴走することなく冷静でした。

From this passage, we also see that Daniel must have had special favor with the king because he was given time to seek God regarding the matter of the dream.また、この箇所から、ダニエルは夢の問題について神様に求める時間を与えられたので、王から特別な寵愛を受けていたに違いないことが分かります。

And Daniel did not go at it alone in terms of seeking God regarding the dream, but he asked his friends to pray to God as well.　 そしてダニエルは、夢に関して神に求めるという点では、一人で行ったのではなく、友人たちにも神様に祈るように頼んだのです。

Then God revealed the mystery, that is the dream and its meaning, to Daniel in a night vision.　 そして、神様は夜の幻の中でダニエルにその謎、すなわち夢とその意味を啓示されたのです。

The first thing that Daniel did when the mystery was revealed was to bless God (Daniel 2:19b-23).　 謎が明らかになった時、ダニエルが最初にしたことは、神様を祝福することでした（ダニエル２章１９b節−２３節）。

Then Daniel went to Arioch, the king’s executioner, to prevent him from killing all the wise men, それからダニエルは、王の処刑人であるアリオクのところに行って、賢者たちを皆殺しにするのを防ぎ、

explaining that he would interpret the king’s dream, and to be taken into the king’s presence (Daniel 2:24-25).　自分が王の夢を解釈することを説明し、王の前に連れて行かれました（ダニエル２章２４節−２５節）。

We see in the way that Daniel spoke to the king that he gave all the credit and glory to God for the revelation of the mystery of the dream and its meaning.　ダニエルが王に対して語った言葉を見ると、彼が夢の謎とその意味を啓示したすべての手柄と栄光を神に帰したことが分かります。

Daniel 2:26-30（ダニエル書２章２６節—３０節）

²⁶ The king said to Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, “Are you able to make known to me the dream which I have seen and its interpretation?” ²⁷ Daniel answered before the king and said, “As for the mystery about which the king has inquired, neither wise men, conjurers, magicians nor diviners are able to declare it to the king. ²⁸ However, there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and He has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will take place in the latter days. This was your dream and the visions in your mind while on your bed. ²⁹ As for you, O king, while on your bed your thoughts turned to what would take place in the future; and He who reveals mysteries has made known to you what will take place. ³⁰ But as for me, this mystery has not been revealed to me for any wisdom residing in me more than in any other living man, but for the purpose of making the interpretation known to the king, and that you may understand the thoughts of your mind.” ²⁶王は答えて、ベルテシャザルという名のダニエルに言った、「あなたはわたしが見た夢と、その解き明かしとをわたしに知らせることができるのか」。²⁷ダニエルは王に答えて言った、「王が求められる秘密は、知者、法術士、博士、占い師など、これを王に示すことはできません。²⁸しかし秘密をあらわすひとりの神が天におられます。彼は後の日に起るべき事を、ネブカデネザル王に知らされたのです。あなたの夢と、あなたが床にあって見た脳中の幻はこれです。²⁹王よ、あなたが床におられたとき、この後どんな事があろうかと、思いまわされたが、秘密をあらわされるかたが、将来どんな事が起るかを、あなたに知らされたのです。³⁰この秘密をわたしにあらわされたのは、すべての生ける者にまさって、わたしに知恵があるためではなく、ただその解き明かしを、王にお知らせすることによって、あなたが心に思われたことを、お知りになるためです」。

Daniel explained that God was revealing the dream to the king, to make known what will take place in the future.　 ダニエルは、神様が王に夢を示されたのは、将来起こることを知らせるためだと説明しました。

Daniel went on to explain that the dream that the king saw which had to do with a great statue, represented Babylonia and three other kingdoms that will come after it,　 ダニエルは続けて、王が見た大きな像に関係する夢は、バビロニアとその後に来る他の三つの王国を表しているとし、

and the stone that struck the statue on its feet and crushed them, represented God’s eternal kingdom that will put to end all the kingdoms (Daniel 2:31-45).　像の足を打って砕いた石は、すべての王国を終わらせる神の永遠の王国を表していたると説明しました（ダニエル２章３１節−４５節）。

After revealing these things to King Nebuchadnezzar, the king bowed before Daniel and sort of worshipped him (Daniel 2:46).　 ネブカデネザル王にこれらのことを告げた後、王はダニエルの前にひれ伏して彼を礼拝しました（ダニエル２章４６節）。

However, he also gave glory to God by saying to Daniel: しかし、彼はまた、ダニエルにこう言って神様に栄光を帰しました：

“Surely your God is a God of gods and a Lord of kings and a revealer of mysteries, since you have been able to reveal this mystery” (Daniel 2:47).  「あなたがこの秘密をあらわすことができたのを見ると、まことに、あなたがたの神は神々の神、王たちの主であって、秘密をあらわされるかただ」。（ダニエル書２章４７節）

Daniel was then promoted to be ruler over the whole province of Babylon and chief prefect over all the wise men of Babylon (Daniel 2:48).　 ダニエルはこの後、バビロン全州の支配者となり、バビロンの賢者たちの最高責任者に昇進したのです（ダニエル２章４８節）。

Daniel also requested to the king to have his friends promoted to key administrative positions (Daniel 2:49).　 ダニエルはまた、自分の友人を行政の要職に昇進させるようにと王に願い出ました（ダニエル２章４９節）。

Thus, we see Daniel’s love and care for his friends who also loved God and trusted and obeyed Him.　 このように、同じように神を愛し、神に信頼し、従っている友人たちに対するダニエルの愛と配慮を見ることができます。

We see this in Daniel’s friends’ actions in Daniel 3.　 ダニエル書３章に登場するダニエルの友人たちの行動に、このことが見て取れます。

Because of time, I will not go into the details of what took place, but I think many of you are familiar with the story.　 時間の関係で、何が起こったかの詳細には触れませんが、この話は多くの人が知っていると思います。

Nebuchadnezzar made a huge image of himself made of gold and commanded that everyone in his kingdom bow before the image, ネブカデネザルは金で巨大な自分の像を作り、王国のすべての人にその像の前にひれ伏すように、

and for those who didn’t to be cast into the midst of a furnace of blazing fire (Daniel 3:1-7).　また、ひれ伏さない者は燃え盛る火の炉の中に投げ込まれるように命じました（ダニエル書３章１節−７節）。

However, Daniel’s friends did not bow to the image and therefore were to be thrown into the furnace of blazing fire (Daniel 3:8-13).　 しかし、ダニエルの友人たちは像にひれ伏しなかったので、燃える火の炉に投げ込まれることになりました（ダニエル３章８節−１３節）。

When brought before the king, they were given one last chance to bow before the image with the king’s question to them:　 王の前に引き出された彼らは、王の問いかけに対して、像の前に頭を下げる最後の機会が与えられました：

“But if you do not worship, you will immediately be cast into the midst of a furnace of blazing fire; and what god is there who can deliver you out of my hands?” (Daniel 3:15)「しかし、拝むことをしないならば、ただちに火の燃える炉の中に投げ込まれる。いったい、どの神が、わたしの手からあなたがたを救うことができようか」。（ダニエル書３章１５節）

Daniel’s three friends’ response was the following:　 ダニエルの３人の友人の反応は次のようなもでした：

“O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to give you an answer concerning this matter. ¹⁷ If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the furnace of blazing fire; and He will deliver us out of your hand, O king. ¹⁸ But even if He does not, let it be known to you, O king, that we are not going to serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.” ¹⁶シャデラク、メシャクおよびアベデネゴは王に答えて言った、「ネブカデネザルよ、この事について、お答えする必要はありません。¹⁷もしそんなことになれば、わたしたちの仕えている神は、その火の燃える炉から、わたしたちを救い出すことができます。また王よ、あなたの手から、わたしたちを救い出されます。¹⁸たといそうでなくても、王よ、ご承知ください。わたしたちはあなたの神々に仕えず、またあなたの立てた金の像を拝みません」。

Notice how their faith in God was not based on what God would do for them.　 彼らの神様への信仰が、神様が自分たちにしてくださることに基づいていたのではないことに注目してみてください。

Their faith was in who God is, and in His character and power.　 彼らの信仰は、神様がどのようなお方であるか、その神様のご性質と力に基づくものであった。

However, God did indeed deliver them out of the hand of King Nebuchadnezzar by delivering them from the furnace of blazing fire (Daniel 3:19-27).　 そして、神様は確かに彼らを火の燃える炉から救い出し、ネブカデネザル王の手から救い出されたのです（ダニエル３章１９節−２７節）。

And in the end, Nebuchadnezzar responded by blessing God and promoting Daniel’s friends (Daniel 3:28-30).　 そして最後には、ネブカデネザルは神を祝福し、ダニエルの友人を昇進させることでそれに応えたのです（ダニエル３章２８節−３０節）。

Because of time, I will not talk about how God humbled Nebuchadnezzar (Daniel 4), how God humbled and judged Belshazzar (Daniel 5), 時間の関係で、神様がネブカデネザルをどのように屈服させたか（ダニエル４章）、神様がベルシャザルをどのように屈服させ、裁かれたか（ダニエル５章）、

and how God delivered Daniel from the lions’ den (Daniel 6). 　神様がダニエルをライオンの穴からどのように救い出されたか（ダニエル６章）については割愛させていただきます。

However, through all of those events, we can see Daniel’s faithfulness and commitment to God no matter what the circumstances.　 しかし、これらすべての出来事を通して、私たちはダニエルがどのような状況にあっても神様に忠実で、献身的であったことを見ることができるのです。

And in every instance, God was glorified!　 そして、どのような場合でも、神様は栄光を受けられたのです！

As noted earlier, Daniel 7-12, all record the visions that God had given to Daniel.　 先に述べたように、ダニエル書７章から１２章には、神様がダニエルに与えた幻が記録されています。

In chapters 7 and 8 and 10 through 12, more details of the kingdoms that were introduced in King Nebuchadnezzar’s dream of the huge statue and stone are revealed to Daniel.　 ７章、８章、１０章から１２章では、ネブカデネザル王が見た巨大な像と石の夢に登場する王国の詳細がダニエルに明かされています。

However, in Daniel 9, we are given a glimpse into Daniel’s heart and his concern for his people.　 そしてダニエル書９章では、ダニエルの心と民に対する配慮が垣間見られます。

We see this in Daniel’s prayer on behalf of his fellow Jews as he saw the completion of 70 years of exile prophesied by the prophet Jeremiah drawing nearer.　 預言者エレミヤによって預言された７０年の流浪の終わりが近づいているのを目の当たりにしたダニエルが、同胞のユダヤ人のために祈る姿にそのことが表れています。

We see Daniel’s humility before God through the prayer he offered up as he began by confessing the sins of his people.　民の罪を告白することから始めたダニエルの祈りを通して、私たちはダニエルの神の前での謙遜を見るのです。

Daniel 9:4-8（ダニエル書９章４節—８節）

“Alas, O Lord, the great and awesome God, who keeps His covenant and lovingkindness for those who love Him and keep His commandments, ⁵ we have sinned, committed iniquity, acted wickedly and rebelled, even turning aside from Your commandments and ordinances. ⁶ Moreover, we have not listened to Your servants the prophets, who spoke in Your name to our kings, our princes, our fathers and all the people of the land. ⁷ “Righteousness belongs to You, O Lord, but to us open shame, as it is this day—to the men of Judah, the inhabitants of Jerusalem and all Israel, those who are nearby and those who are far away in all the countries to which You have driven them, because of their unfaithful deeds which they have committed against You. ⁸ Open shame belongs to us, O Lord, to our kings, our princes and our fathers, because we have sinned against You.”「ああ、大いなる恐るべき神、主、おのれを愛し、おのれの戒めを守る者のために契約を保ち、いつくしみを施される者よ、⁵われわれは罪を犯し、悪をおこない、よこしまなふるまいをなし、そむいて、あなたの戒めと、おきてを離れました。⁶われわれはまた、あなたのしもべなる預言者たちが、あなたの名をもって、われわれの王たち、君たち、先祖たち、および国のすべての民に告げた言葉に聞き従いませんでした。⁷主よ、正義はあなたのものですが、恥はわれわれに加えられて、今日のような有様です。すなわちユダの人々、エルサレムの住民および全イスラエルの者は、近き者も、遠き者もみな、あなたが追いやられたすべての国々で恥をこうむりました。これは彼らがあなたにそむいて犯した罪によるのです。⁸主よ、恥はわれわれのもの、われわれの王たち、君たちおよび先祖たちのものです。これはわれわれがあなたにむかって罪を犯したからです」。

Daniel continued to confess the sinfulness of his people while appealing to God’s compassion and forgiveness as he prayed (Daniel 9:9-15). 　 ダニエルは祈りながら、神様の憐れみと赦しに訴えつつ、民の罪深さを告白し続けたのです（ダニエル９章９節−１５節）。

He then appealed to God’s righteousness and His love for His chosen people and city Jerusalem (Daniel 9:16-17) and cried out:　そして、彼は選ばれた民と都エルサレムに対する神の義と愛を訴え（ダニエル９章１６節−１７節）、叫びました：

Daniel 9:18-19（ダニエル書９章１８節—１９節）

¹⁸ “O my God, incline Your ear and hear! Open Your eyes and see our desolations and the city which is called by Your name; for we are not presenting our supplications before You on account of any merits of our own, but on account of Your great compassion. ¹⁹ O Lord, hear! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, listen and take action! For Your own sake, O my God, do not delay, because Your city and Your people are called by Your name.” ¹⁸「わが神よ、耳を傾けて聞いてください。目を開いて、われわれの荒れたさまを見、み名をもってとなえられる町をごらんください。われわれがあなたの前に祈をささげるのは、われわれの義によるのではなく、ただあなたの大いなるあわれみによるのです。¹⁹主よ、聞いてください。主よ、ゆるしてください。主よ、み心に留めて、おこなってください。わが神よ、あなたご自身のために、これを延ばさないでください。あなたの町と、あなたの民は、み名をもってとなえられているからです」。

In answer to Daniel’s prayer, God sent the angel Gabriel who Daniel had previously seen already to speak to him (Daniel 9:20-21).　 ダニエルの祈りに応えて、神様はダニエルが以前に見た天使ガブリエルを遣わし、彼に語らせました（ダニエル９章２０節−２１節）。

This is what the angel Gabriel said to Daniel:　 天使ガブリエルはダニエルにこう言いました：

Daniel 9:22-27（ダニエル書９章２２節—２７節）

“O Daniel, I have now come forth to give you insight with understanding. ²³ At the beginning of your supplications the command was issued, and I have come to tell you, for you are highly esteemed; so give heed to the message and gain understanding of the vision. ²⁴ “Seventy weeks have been decreed for your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sin, to make atonement for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy place. ²⁵ So you are to know and discern that from the issuing of a decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince there will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; it will be built again, with plaza and moat, even in times of distress. ²⁶ Then after the sixty-two weeks the Messiah will be cut off and have nothing, and the people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. And its end will come with a flood; even to the end there will be war; desolations are determined. ²⁷ And he will make a firm covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of abominations will come one who makes desolate, even until a complete destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who makes desolate.”「ダニエルよ、わたしは今あなたに、知恵と悟りを与えるためにきました。²³あなたが祈を始めたとき、み言葉が出たので、それをあなたに告げるためにきたのです。あなたは大いに愛せられている者です。ゆえに、このみ言葉を考えて、この幻を悟りなさい。²⁴あなたの民と、あなたの聖なる町については、七十週が定められています。これはとがを終らせ、罪に終りを告げ、不義をあがない、永遠の義をもたらし、幻と預言者を封じ、いと聖なる者に油を注ぐためです。²⁵それゆえ、エルサレムを建て直せという命令が出てから、メシヤなるひとりの君が来るまで、七週と六十二週あることを知り、かつ悟りなさい。その間に、しかも不安な時代に、エルサレムは広場と街路とをもって、建て直されるでしょう。²⁶その六十二週の後にメシヤは断たれるでしょう。ただし自分のためにではありません。またきたるべき君の民は、町と聖所とを滅ぼすでしょう。その終りは洪水のように臨むでしょう。そしてその終りまで戦争が続き、荒廃は定められています。²⁷彼は一週の間多くの者と、堅く契約を結ぶでしょう。そして彼はその週の半ばに、犠牲と供え物とを廃するでしょう。また荒す者が憎むべき者の翼に乗って来るでしょう。こうしてついにその定まった終りが、その荒す者の上に注がれるのです」。

Because of time, I will not go into the details of what was revealed to Daniel here.　 時間の関係で、ここでダニエルに啓示されたことの詳細には立ち入りません。

However, it is quite evident that the things written here have to do with the Messiah, and if we were to examine what is written carefully, しかし、ここに書かれていることがメシヤに関係していることは明らかであり、

we will see that it describes the timing of the coming of the Messiah (Christ Jesus) and even of His death.　書かれていることを注意深く調べれば、メシヤ（キリスト・イエス）が来られる時期、さらにはメシヤの死について書かれていることが分かることでしょう。

I encourage you to read the Book of Daniel on your own and study it as part of a Bible study group.　 ダニエル書を自分で読んだり、聖書を学ぶグループの一員として学んだりすることをお勧めします。

God blessed Daniel by sharing with him the future and even the time of the end.　神様はダニエルに将来のこと、さらには終末の時のことまで話され、祝福しました。

Through it all, Daniel was faithful to God and was humbly ruled by Him.　 その間ずっと、ダニエルは神様に忠実であり、神様に謙虚に支配され続けました。

Daniel is one of my most favorite people in the Bible.　 ダニエルは、聖書の中で私が最も好きな人物の一人です。

He was a man of integrity.　 彼は誠実な人でした。

He was humble and faithful.　 謙虚で誠実でした。

He was bold and trustworthy.　彼は大胆で信頼できる人でした。

He was a prayer warrior.　 彼は祈りの戦士でした。

He was given special ability to see and to interpret visions.　 彼には幻を見たり解釈したりする特別な能力を与えられました。

When you think of Daniel’s healthy life of faith filled with integrity, what are some things that you can take to heart?　 誠実さに満ちたダニエルの健全な信仰生活を思う時、あなたが心に留めておくことができることは何ですか？

If you were asked the question right now, “What is your name?”, how would you answer that question?　 もし今、「あなたの名前は何ですか」と質問されたら、どう答えますか？

If you were to examine your heart, what does it look like?　 あなたの心を調べるとしたら、それはどのように見えますか？

Are you enjoying being with Jesus and are joyfully trusting and obeying Him?　 イエス様と一緒にいることを楽しみ、喜んでイエス様に信頼し従っていますか？

Is Jesus truly the King and Lord and Ruler of your life?　 イエス様は本当にあなたの人生の王であり、主であり、支配者ですか？
