このクロスが王であったペルシャとは現在のイランを意味し、１９３５年までイランはペルシャと呼ばれていたとういうことをご存知でしょうか。イランといえば最近もイスラエルとの間で交戦を繰り広げた国であり、現在、イスラエルがこの地球上で最も警戒している国です。そのイランではクロス王はイランの建国者と言われている人物です。かつてのイランがイスラエルの民を無償で解放し、彼らの神殿再建の援助をしていたということは、私達を驚かせます
人の歴史はついこの間まで力のある国が力のない国々を植民地支配していました。聖書の時代の王達も誰もが独裁的、残虐で、とても人権などを念頭に置くことがなかったということを思います。そのような中、このクロス王のイスラエルの民に対する待遇というのは驚きというよりも本来、ありえない話です。しかし、そのようなありえないことが起きた、その理由についてイザヤはこれらのことが起きる前に（実際にはクロスが生まれる前に彼の名前を名指しして）既に預言していました。
『またクロスについては、『彼はわが牧者、わが目的をことごとくなし遂げる』（イザヤ４４章２２節）『彼はわが町を建て、わが捕囚を価のためでなく、また報いのためでもなく解き放つ」と万軍の主は言われる』（イザヤ４５章１３節）
このことはクロスという人間が高貴な者であったというよりも、その背後には神の御手が確実に動いていたということを明らかにしています。神は異教徒クロスを用いて、その目的をことごとく成し遂げたのです（大倉）。

ゼカリヤ：「私の能力によらず、私の権勢によらず」

紀元前５８６年、バビロンによって南ユダ王国は滅ぼされました。そのことによりユダヤの民は紀元前５３９年まで、バビロンに連行され、彼らの捕囚民となったということについて、ここ何週間、お話しています。先週は本多先生がネヘミヤのリーダーシップのもと、彼らが廃墟となったエルサレムに帰還し、そこで城壁を築き直したということをお話しくださいました。
そもそもなぜイスラエルの民は故国エルサレムに戻ることができたのでしょうか。事の始まりはバビロンが紀元前５３９年にペルシヤによって滅ぼされ、イスラエルの民達の身柄がペルシャのクロス王の元に移されたことによります。このことにより驚くべきことが起きたのです。
なんとこの異教の王がイスラエルの民を無償で故国イスラエルに帰還させたのです。さらにそれのみならず、クロスはエルサレムにある彼らの荒廃した神殿を再建させるための支援も寛大に提供しました。このような信じがたい待遇を受けつつ、彼らは破壊された城壁を築き直し、神殿を再興するためにエルサレムに帰っていったのです。このようにして故国に帰還したイスラエルの民達は、そこで様々な困難に直面しますが、城壁を完成させます。そのことについても先週、本多牧師がお話しくださいました。
そして今日、お話しますゼカリヤ書ですが、その著者はその名のとおりゼカリヤという預言者でした。ゼカリヤもネヘミヤと同じように神殿再建のビジョンに取り組んだ人であり、民を励まし、自らもこのために汗を流した人でした。今日はまずこのゼカリヤが生きた時代にいたるまでのこと、すなわち「歴史に介入された神」について見ていきましょう。
登山をする時に私達はその登ってきた標高が高くなればなるほど、自分達がどのような道程を歩いてきたのかを見渡せるようになります。このゼカリヤ書から見渡すことができる、それまでの彼らの歩みはどんなものだったのでしょうか。
ゼカリヤの時代から約１５０年以上も前に預言者イザヤが神様から託された言葉がイザヤ書に記録されています。そこには驚くべきことが記録されています。イザヤはイスラエルの民の帰還と神殿再建のきっかけとなったペルシャのクロス王について、クロスが生まれる１５０年以上も前に彼の名を名指しで預言しているのです。
クロスは異教徒でしたが、その彼が自分の国に捕われている人々を祖国に帰還させ、荒廃したエルサレムを再建させるということが既にイザヤ書に記録されていたのです。驚くべきことに、その時にイスラエルはまだ、バビロンの捕囚民にすらなっていなかったのです！
イザヤ４４章２８節：またクロスについては、『彼はわが牧者、わが目的をことごとくなし遂げる』と言い、エルサレムについては、『ふたたび建てられる』と言い、神殿については、『あなたの基がすえられる』と言う」
イザヤ４５章１節ー３節：『わたしはわが受膏者クロスの右の手をとって、もろもろの国をその前に従わせ、もろもろの王の腰を解き、とびらをその前に開かせて、門を閉じさせない、と言われる主はその受膏者クロスにこう言われる、「わたしはあなたの前に行って、もろもろの山を平らにし、青銅のとびらをこわし、鉄の貫の木を断ち切り、あなたに、暗い所にある財宝と、ひそかな所に隠した宝物とを与えて、わたしは主、あなたの名を呼んだイスラエルの神であることをあなたに知らせよう』

そして、このことはこの時だけに限ったことではなくて、イスラエルの歩みは常に孤立無援の歩みではなくて、彼らが歩んできた歴史の背後にはいつも神様がいたのです。そして、このゼカリヤの時代から２５００年後の今を生きる私達の世界の背後にもこの神様がおられることを私たちは心に刻みましょう。さらには、この神様は私達一人一人とも共におられ、私達の生涯を導いているのです。
私たちは日々、色々なことに向き合います。そのことにより心は沈み、引き上げられ、アップ＆ダウンを繰り返します。そんな私たちに必要なことは「一つのことに捕らわれずに全体を見る」ということです。
バビロンに連行されたイスラエルの民。そこから彼らを解放される神。その全体を支配し、その全体をかたち作る一つ一つの出来事の背後には神がいるということを心に刻みましょう。
このことを心に据える時、私たちが心に留めておかなければならないことに導かれます。それは一つや二つの出来事によって、早々に結論を出してはいけないということです。全ての事柄が神の御手の中にあるのですから、そうである限り私達は事の成り行きを神様の御手に委ねつつ、その最善のみ業がなるように祈り、自分達の出来る事を一日、一日、最善を成して生きるべきです。このことゆえに、この父なる神に全幅の信頼を置いているイエス様は私たちに語りかけるのです。
マタイ６章３３節、３４節： 『33 まず神の国と神の義とを求めなさい。そうすれば、これらのものは、すべて添えて与えられるであろう。34 だから、あすのことを思いわずらうな。あすのことは、あす自身が思いわずらうであろう。一日の苦労は、その日一日だけで十分である』
明日に対して権威をもっているのは私たちではなく、神なのです。私たちは自分の立ち位置をわきまえましょう。私たちがすべき事は今日に最善を尽くすことです。そして明日がきたら同じように最善を尽くすのです。
１８年ほど前、ニュージャージーから大学時代の友人が訪ねてきたことがありました。その時の再会は彼の卒業以来でしたから、１９年ぶりの再会となりました。イスラエルの歴史における数千年とは比べ物にならない短い年月ですが、人の一生ということを考えますのなら、その１９年が私達の生涯にしめる年月は長いものです。互いの１９年間について、私達はしみじみと色々なことを語り合いました。
この国に来た当初、きっと皆さんも色々なチャレンジを受けたことでしょう。ホームシックになったり、言葉や生活習慣に慣れるのに時間がかかり、日本に帰ろうかと考えた方も多くいらっしゃると思います。１９８７年、テネシー州の大学に入学した私もそのような時を過ごしました。
この友人は寮にいる者たちが皆、帰省してしまう、私が米国で迎える一番、最初のサンクスギビングに私を実家に招いてくれました。延々と南北に続く、アパラチャ山脈に平行して、何もないバージニア州を延々と北上し、１０時間かけて彼の実家にあるニュージャージーに私達は向かいました。
彼はコロンビア人でした。そして私は日本人、何の接点もないように思われます。英語が話せない自分と１０時間もの間、二人きりの車の中で私達は何を話していたのだろうかと今、思うのです。しかし、確かに彼の存在はあの時の私を支えてくれました。
彼の家に着きますと「これからサンクスギビング礼拝に行く」といいます。行ってその時、初めて分かったのはさっきまで一緒にキッチンでコーヒーを飲んでいた彼の父は牧師であり、その晩、教会でメッセージを語っていました。
「お前の父親が牧師だなんて、聞いていないぞ」と思いつつ、そこで見た光景はそれまで日本の礼拝では見たことのない情熱的なペンテコステ礼拝。生まれて初めて見る、見たことのない礼拝のスタイルに圧倒されて、しばらく言葉が出ませんでした。
そのような１９年前を思いおこしつつ、「お前がいなければ俺のキャンパスライフはしんどかったなー」と私が言えば、「お前が牧師の子には見えなかったな～」と言われ「人のこと言えるか」と互いに笑いしました。「俺は親元を離れて、あの時は信仰を失っていたんだ」「そうか、お前もか、俺もだ」と互いに笑い、でも、１９年を経て、その互いの歩んできた年月を振り返った時に、二人が一致したことは、「放蕩息子が神のあわれみにより父なる神のもとに立ち返った」ということであり、そのことをしみじみと話しました。そして、振り返ればその間に私達が経験したことは何一つ、無駄ではなく、あの時も神は自分達と共にいてくださったということでした。
その時に互いに確認したことは、私たちの背後には神がおられたということであり、私達が信仰をもってその歩みを見直すのなら、マイナスと思われたことがプラスと変えられていたのだということだったのです。今、その時を振り返り思います。クロスを用いたのと同じ神が私達と共にいてくださったと。
クロス王ゆえに故国に帰還したイスラエルの民はゼカリヤの励ましとリーダーシップにより、神殿の再建に取りかかり、四年の年月をかけ、紀元前５１６年、神殿は遂に完成しますその完成にいたる前にゼカリヤはこのような言葉をもって民を励まし指導しました。
ゼカリヤ８章９節‐１３節： 9万軍の主は、こう仰せられる、「万軍の主の家である宮を建てるために、その礎をすえた日からこのかた、預言者たちの口から出たこれらの言葉を、きょう聞く者よ、あなたがたの手を強くせよ。10この日の以前には、人も働きの価を得ず、獣も働きの価を得ず、また出る者もはいる者も、あだのために安全ではなかった。わたしはまた人々を相たがいにそむかせた。11しかし今は、わたしのこの民の残れる者に対することは、先の日のようではないと、万軍の主は言われる。12そこには、平和と繁栄との種がまかれるからである。すなわちぶどうの木は実を結び、地は産物を出し、天は露を与える。わたしはこの民の残れる者に、これをことごとく与える。13ユダの家およびイスラエルの家よ、あなたがたが、国々の民の中に、のろいとなっていたように、わたしはあなたがたを救って祝福とする。恐れてはならない。あなたがたの手を強くせよ」
彼らが神殿再建に取りかからずに、自分のことだけに精力を注いでいた時に彼らは自分の働きの報いを十分に得ることはありませんでした。また敵を前にして安全ではなく、同国民の間でも相反するというようなことが起こりました。彼らが一生懸命に自らのことだけに力を注げば注ぐほど、空回りするような時を過ごしていたのです。
しかし、彼らが己の使命に立ち返り、神の宮を再建させることに力を注ぎ、それを実際に成し遂げた時に、神様は先の日にはなかった、驚くべき祝福を彼らに与えたのです。すなわち、そこには平和と繁栄が回復されていき、かつては呪いとなっていたような者達が祝福の源になっていくというのです。皆さん、これはイスラエルの民一人一人になされたとても力強い神の祝福です。
この時代のことを書いたハガイ書には神様が私達を祝福するのであって、私達が自分を祝福するのではないと書かれています。しかも、もし神様が私達を祝福してくださるのなら、その神様の祝福が私達から溢れ出るかのようにして、他の人達への祝福となっていくというのです。わが身を知る私達にとって、このことは身に余ることです。
私はこのような驚くべきことをお話します時に、いつも私が卒業した神学校の恩師である藤巻充先生のことを思い出します。「呪われていたような者が祝福を与える者に変えられる」
このことはまさしく先生のライフメッセージでした。先生はその著書、『聖書は語る』の中にご自身について、こう書いておられます。わたしの小学生時代のあだ名は「左巻き」でした。それは私の「藤巻」という名前が悪いのです。「藤巻、のり巻き、左巻き」と言ってからかわれました。私は嫌な人間だったからそういうあだ名がつけられたのです。かわいいあだ名がつけられるのは、かわいいからなのです（私はそうではありませんでした）。
そのように学校でいじめられたり、からかわれたりしますと、その反動で母親や時には妹、あるいは犬や猫にまで八つ当たりするのです。代償を求めないではいられないからです。そして家庭内暴力に走ってしまうのです。学校でうまくいかないから、その腹いせ、その復讐を家でするわけで代償を家で求めるのです。
学校に行きましても「お前は学校始まって以来の木偶の坊である」と先生に言われ、「木偶の坊とは何ですか」と聞きましたら、「おまえのことだ」と言われました。ある国語の先生からは「お前は丼野朗だ（どんぶりやろう）」と言われましても、それが何の意味か分からないのです。
母からはよく「充、お前がいなければ、この家は明るいのに、おまえのために家は真っ暗だ」と言われました」（『聖書は語る』 藤巻充著 PP３８１、３８２）。教師にとっても私は学校に来ない方がよかったのでしょう。私なんか辞めてくれた方がよかったのです。そんな暗澹たる思いで先生は日々を過ごしていましたから、学校を何度も退学され、その回数は１７回となったといいます。
藤巻先生は書いています。私は友達にも良い感情は持っていませんでした。だから、友達もいませんでした。もはや日本の学校に藤巻先生を受け入れてくれる場所はなく、先生は横浜にある中華中学に入りました。その時、先生は２０歳になっていたというのです。周りの生徒は皆、中学生なのです。先生は言います。
しかし、このような私がクリスチャンになりました時に神の恵みというものが分かりました。神が赦してくださった。神が受け入れてくださった。神が罪の赦しと永遠の命を約束してくださったのです。それからの藤巻先生に何が起きたのでしょうか。
クリスチャンになる前は誰かが学校を休みますと「ざまぁ見ろ。もっと休め」と思っていました。しかし、クリスチャンになりましてからは自分が登校拒否をしていた時に誰も訪ねてくれなかったことを思い出して、クラスが終わっても教室に残り、メモをしてその人の所に届けに行ったり、郵送したりするようになりました。
そういう学校生活が始まりますと、学校生活が楽しくなりました。そして、それまでは憎しみの対象であったような先生や友達もすばらしいと思えるようになりました。その時、全てが変わっていきました。先生も友達も私のために一生懸命にサポートしてくれるようになりました。「友達のために」と思っていたことは実はその人のためだけではなく、自分でもびっくりするような成績をとるようになりました。できるだけわかりやすくメモを取るよう努力をしているうちに、自然と自分自身が学んでいたのです。それから先生のことも好きになり、その先生が教える学科が大好きになりました。
かつて１７回、学校を退学し、母親からは「お前がいなければ」と言われ、家の中でその母親に暴力をふるっていた、そんな先生は牧師となり、神と人に仕え、私の母校の神学校の院長をつとめ、現在はその神学校の名誉教授となっています。先生は学校でも家庭でも呪いとなるような存在でありながら、その先生が他者を祝福することができるようなものへと変えられていったのです。
私達はこのゼカリヤ書の中に記されているある言葉をよく聞くことがあります。その言葉が今日、お話したことを全てまとめて言っています。それはゼカリヤ４章６節の言葉です。
ゼカリヤ４章６節：『万軍の主は仰せられる、これは権勢によらず、能力によらず、わたしの霊によるのである』
神様がイスラエルになされた大いなること、ペルシヤの王、クロスにはたらきかけ、一国の歩みを変えたはたらき、それはイスラエルやクロスの権勢によらず、能力によらず、ただ神様の霊なる働きでした。主は「のろい」となっていたような、イスラエルの民達を祝福の源と変えたのです。
「お前なんか必要ない、いらない」と言われ続けていた藤巻先生が、多くの人達を祝福する人に変えられたということ。これらはすべてイスラエルの民や藤巻先生の権勢によらず、能力によらず、ただ神様の一方的なあわれみによったのです。
今日、この恵み深きお方が私達を祝福の基となるような者に変えてあげようと私達にも語りかけています。この主の語りかけをあなたは聞いているでしょうか。これまで聞き流してきたでしょうか。これからも聞き流していくのでしょうか。あなたがこのことを自覚し、このことを主に願い求め、主を第一として生きていくのであるならば、このことはあなた自身の生涯に成就していくと私は信じます。
今朝、私たちは胸に手をおいて、自らに問いかけましょう。これからの私の人生、今まで通りこれからも、自分の能力と権勢だけを信じ、それに寄り頼んで生きていくのか。それとも、私の人生、神の力に寄り頼んで生きていくのか。私たちの能力や権勢などたかが知れています。私たちの身に何かが起きただけで、それらは簡単に崩れ去っていくのです。
主にある皆さん、神に祝福され、その祝福が満ち溢れ、私達を祝福の基としてくださると言われる主に寄り頼む人生、これ以上の何を私達は自分の人生に求めましょうか。お祈りしましょう。
Zechariah: “Not by My Might nor by My Power”

In 586 BC, the kingdom of Southern Judah was destroyed by Babylon. We have been talking for weeks now about how this led the Jewish people to be taken to Babylon and become their captives until 539 BC. Last week, Pastor Honda talked about how under Nehemiah’s leadership they returned to Jerusalem that was in ruins and rebuilt the walls there.
Why were the Israelites able to return to their native Jerusalem in the first place? It all started when Babylon was destroyed by the Persians in 539 BC, and the Israelites were placed under the custody of King Cyrus of Persia. Due to this, something amazing took place.
This pagan king freely returned the Israelites to their homeland of Israel. Not only that, but Cyrus also generously provided support for them to rebuild their ruined temple in Jerusalem. With such unbelievable treatment, they returned to Jerusalem to rebuild the destroyed walls and rebuild the temple. The Israelites who return to their homeland in this way face various difficulties there, but they complete the wall. Pastor Honda spoke about this as well last week.
And the book of Zechariah, which I will talk about today, was written by a prophet named Zechariah. Zechariah, like Nehemiah, was a man who was committed to the vision of rebuilding the temple, who encouraged the people, and who himself worked diligently for this cause. Today we will first look at the events leading up to the time in which this Zechariah lived, that is, “God intervening in history”.
When climbing a mountain, the higher the altitude we climb, the more we can see the path we have taken. What was their journey up to that point, as can be seen from this book of Zechariah?
The words entrusted by God to the prophet Isaiah, more than 150 years before the time of Zechariah, are recorded in the book of Isaiah. There are amazing things recorded there. Isaiah prophesied about King Cyrus of Persia, who was the catalyst for the return of the Israelites and the rebuilding of the temple, naming him more than 150 years before Cyrus was born.
Although Cyrus was a pagan, it was already recorded in Isaiah that he was going to return the captives to their homeland and rebuild the devastated Jerusalem. Amazingly, at that time Israel had not yet even become a captive people in Babylon!
Isaiah 44:28: who says of Cyrus, ‘He is my shepherd and will accomplish all that I please; he will say of Jerusalem, “Let it be rebuilt,” and of the temple, “Let its foundations be laid.”’
Isaiah 45:1-3:1 “This is what the Lord says to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I take hold of to subdue nations before him and to strip kings of their armor, to open doors before him so that gates will not be shut: 2 I will go before you and will level the mountains; I will break down gates of bronze and cut through bars of iron. 3 I will give you hidden treasures, riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the Lord, the God of Israel, who summons you by name.
Isaiah 45:13: I will raise up Cyrus in my righteousness: I will make all his ways straight. He will rebuild my city and set my exiles free, but not for a price or reward, says the Lord Almighty.”
The British Museum in England houses an ancient cuneiform manuscript excavated in Iran. The proclamation is in the form of a cylinder, on which is inscribed the proclamation of a certain king, which is called the “Cyrus Cylinder”.
Yes, it was Cyrus, the person I am telling you about now, who issued that proclamation. What is written in this document is that Cyrus destroyed Babylon, he liberated the various people, abolished oppression and tyranny, gave freedom of religion, and developed a tolerant rule. This is why this column is today considered “the world’s first human rights charter”.
Did you know that Persia, of which Cyrus was king, is today’s Iran, and that Iran was called Persia until 1935? Iran is a country that has recently been engaged in a war with Israel, and is currently the country that Israel is most wary of on this earth. In that Iran, King Cyrus is the man who is considered the founder of Iran.
It amazes us that Iran in the past released the Israelites freely and assisted them in rebuilding the Temple! Until recently in human history, powerful countries have colonized less powerful countries. I think of the kings of biblical times and how everyone was dictatorial, cruel, and very much did not have human rights in mind. In such a context, this treatment of the Israelites by King Cyrus is more than surprising; it is inherently improbable. But Isaiah had already prophesied before these things happened, about the reasons why such improbable things happened.
Isaiah 45:13: “He will rebuild my city and set my exiles free, but not for a price or reward, says the Lord Almighty.”
This reveals not so much that the man Cyrus was a noble man, but that the hand of God was definitely at work in the background.It is just as the following words of the Lord written by Isaiah.
Isaiah 44:22: who says of Cyrus, ‘He is my shepherd and will accomplish all that I please;
God used the pagan Cyrus to accomplish His purpose at every turn. This One also intervened in the policy of a nation for the sake of Israel.
And this was not only at this time. Israel’s journey was not always an isolated one, but God was always behind the history they were going through.And let us keep in mind that this God is also behind the world we live in today, 2500 years after the time of Zechariah.Furthermore, this God is also with each of us and guides us throughout our lives.
We face many things on a daily basis. This causes our hearts to sink, be lifted, and go through ups and downs. What we need to do is to “see the whole picture without getting caught up in one thing”. The Israelites were taken to Babylon. God delivers them from there. Let us keep in mind that God is behind each and every event that governs and shapes the whole.
When we set our minds on this, we are led to something we must keep in mind. That is, one should not jump to conclusions prematurely based on one or two events. Since all things are in God’s hands, as long as this is the case, we should leave the course of events in God’s hands, pray for His best work to come to pass, and live our lives doing the best we can, one day at a time. This is why Jesus, who places his full trust in this God the Father, speaks to us.
Matthew 6:33, 34: 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.
It is God, not us, who has authority over tomorrow. Let us know where we stand. All we have to do is give our best today. And when tomorrow comes, we will do our best to do the same.
About 18 years ago, a friend from college came to visit from New Jersey. That was the first time we had seen each other since his graduation, so it had been 19 years since we last saw each other. Although these years are far shorter than the thousands of years of Israel’s history, if we consider a person’s lifetime, those 19 years are a long time for us. We talked about many things about each other’s 19 years.
I am sure that when you first arrived in this country, you too were challenged in many ways. Many of you may have felt homesick or had thoughts of returning to Japan because of the time it takes to get used to the language and lifestyle. I had moments like that in 1987 when I entered college in Tennessee.
This friend invited me to his family home on that very first Thanksgiving I would have in the U.S., when everyone in my dorm would be going home. We drove north through empty Virginia, parallel to the endless north-south Appalachian Mountains, for 10 hours to his family home in New Jersey.
He was Colombian. And I am Japanese. It would seem there is no connection whatsoever. I wonder now, with me not being able to speak English, what the two of us were talking about in the car for 10 hours. But certainly, his presence was a great support to me at that time.
When we arrived at his house, he says, “We are going to Thanksgiving service now”. When I went, I realized for the first time that his father, with whom I had been drinking coffee in the kitchen earlier, was a pastor and was giving a message at the church that evening.
I thought to myself, “I never heard that your father is a pastor,” but what I saw there was a passionate Pentecostal worship service that I had never seen in Japanese worship services before. I was so overwhelmed by the style of worship I had never seen before in my life that I was speechless for a while.
Thinking back to that 19 years ago, when I said, “My campus life would have been tough without you,” he said, “You didn’t seem like a pastor’s kid!” and we laughed at each other and said, “Can you say that about someone else?” We laughed together as one said, “I left my parents and lost my faith at that time,” and the other would say, “You too, huh, me too.”
But after 19 years, when we looked back at the years that we had each walked, what we both agreed on was that “the prodigal son had returned to God the Father through His mercy,” and we spoke with sincerity about this. And looking back, nothing we experienced during that time was in vain, and that God was with us even then.
What we confirmed with each other at that time was that God was in our background,and if we would review our steps with faith, what seemed negative was turned into positive. Now I look back on that time and think. The same God who used Cyrus was with us.
With the encouragement and leadership of Zechariah, the Israelites returned to their homeland because of King Cyrus, and began to rebuild the temple, and after four years of work, the temple was finally completed in 516 BC. Before its completion, Zechariah encouraged and instructed the people with these words.
Zechariah 8:9-13: 9 This is what the Lord Almighty says: “Now hear these words, ‘Let your hands be strong so that the temple may be built.’ This is also what the prophets said who were present when the foundation was laid for the house of the Lord Almighty. 10 Before that time there were no wages for people or hire for animals. No one could go about their business safely because of their enemies, since I had turned everyone against their neighbor. 11 But now I will not deal with the remnant of this people as I did in the past,” declares the Lord Almighty. 12 “The seed will grow well, the vine will yield its fruit, the ground will produce its crops, and the heavens will drop their dew. I will give all these things as an inheritance to the remnant of this people. 13 Just as you, Judah and Israel, have been a curse among the nations, so I will save you, and you will be a blessing. Do not be afraid, but let your hands be strong.”
They did not reap the full rewards of their labors when they focused their energies only on themselves instead of starting to rebuild the temple. Also, they were not safe before their enemies, and conflicts arose among their own people. The harder they worked and the more they focused on themselves, the more time they spent spinning out of control.
However, when they turned to their mission and focused their efforts on rebuilding the temple of God, and actually accomplished it, God gave them an amazing blessing that was not there in the previous days. In other words, peace and prosperity will be restored there, and those who would once have been a curse will become a source of blessing. Ladies and gentlemen, this is a very powerful blessing of God that He has done for each and every one of the people of Israel.
The book of Haggai, which describes this period, says that God blesses us, not we bless ourselves. Moreover, if God blesses us, it is as if His blessing overflows from us and becomes a blessing to others. For those of us who know ourselves, this is too much for us.
Whenever I speak of such amazing things, I always think of my former professor at the seminary from which I graduated, Rev. Mitsuru Fujimaki. “One who seemed cursed is transformed into one who gives blessings.”
This was truly his life message. In his book, “The Bible Speaks,” he wrote about himself in the following manner. My nickname in elementary school was “Hidari-maki”. That was due to my name, “Fujimaki”. They teased me by calling me “Fujimaki, nori-maki, hidari-maki.” I was given that nickname because I was an unpleasant person. A cute nickname is given because the person is cute (I was not).
When you are bullied or teased at school in this way, your reaction is to take it out on your mother, sometimes your younger sister, or even your dog or cat. Because we cannot help but seek payback. Then you turn to domestic violence. Because things don’t go well at school, you seek revenge at home, and you seek payback at home.
When I went to school, the teacher told me, “You are the first kid in the school’s history that is good-for-nothing.” And when I asked, “What is good-for nothing?”, I was told, “That is you.” When one of my Japanese teachers told me, “You are a donburi yaro (a bowl of rice guy),” I had no idea what he meant by that.
My mother used to say to me, “Mitsuru, if you weren’t around, this home would be bright, but because of you, the home is dark.” (“The Bible Speaks” by Mitsuru Fujimaki, PP381, 382). It would have been better for the teachers if I had never come to school. They would have been better off if I had quit. He spent his days in such gloom that he was expelled from school many times. Seventeen times in total.
Rev. Fujimaki writes. I did not have good feelings toward friends either. So, I had no friends. No longer able to find a school in Japan that would accept Rev. Fujimaki, he entered a Chinese junior high school in Yokohama. At that time, he was 20 years old. All the students around him were in junior high. He says.
However, when I became a Christian, I understood the grace of God. God forgave me. God accepted me. God has promised forgiveness of sins and eternal life. What happened to Rev. Fujimaki from then on?
Before becoming a Christian, when someone would miss school, I would think, “Serves you right! Take more time off!” However, after becoming a Christian, I remembered that no one visited me when I missed school, so I remained in the classroom after class, writing down notes and delivering it to that person or mailing it to them.
Once that kind of school life started, school life became more enjoyable. And I began to see teachers and friends as wonderful, even though I used to hate them. At that time, everything started to change. My teachers and friends started working hard to support me. What I thought was “for a friend” was actually not only for that person, but I began to get good grades that surprised even me. As I made an effort to take notes as easy to understand as possible, I naturally learned as much. Then I began to like the teacher, and began to truly like the subject that teacher taught.
He who dropped out of school 17 times, was told by his mother, “If you weren’t around,” and was violent toward that mother at home, became a pastor, served God and man, served as the dean of my alma mater seminary, and is now a professor emeritus of that seminary. He was transformed from being a curse at school and at home into someone that could be a blessing to others.
We often hear certain words recorded in this book of Zechariah. Those words sum up and say everything we have talked about today. It is the words of Zechariah 4:6.
Zechariah 4:6: “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty.”
The great things that God did for Israel, the work He did through King Cyrus of Persia that changed the course of a nation, were not based on the might of Israel or Cyrus, nor their power, but only by the work of God’s Spirit. The Lord transformed the people of Israel, who was a “curse,” into a source of blessing.
Rev. Fujimaki, who had continually been told, “You aren’t needed, I don’t want you,” was transformed into a person who blesses many people. All of this was not based on the might of the Israelites or Rev. Fujimaki, nor their power, but only by God’s unilateral mercy.
Today, this gracious One speaks to us as well to transform us into a base of blessings. Are you listening to this Lord speaking to you? Have you let it go in one ear and out the other up to this point? Will you continue to do the same? I believe that if you realize this, ask the Lord for this, and live your life putting Him first, this will be fulfilled in your own lifetime.
This morning, let us put our hands on our chest and ask ourselves. Will I continue to live my life as I have in the past, trusting only in my might and power, and leaning on them? Or will I live my life, leaning on God’s strength? Our might and power are limited. They can easily crumble away simply because something happens to us.
People in the Lord, what more do we want in our lives than to be blessed by God, to be full of His blessings, and to lean on Him, who is said to make us the basis of His blessings. Let us pray.
