Simon Peter: Apostle of the Hills and Valleys
シモン・ペテロ：丘と谷間の使徒

Last Sunday, we were blessed to have Rev. Takashi Furuyama as our guest speaker.　 先週の日曜日、私達は古山隆牧師をゲストスピーカーとしてお迎えする恵みに与りました。

He spoke on “The First Sign of Jesus”.　先生は「イエスの最初のしるし」について語られました。

This first sign or miracle of Jesus was the changing of water into wine at the wedding in Cana (John 2:1-11).　 このイエス様の最初のしるし、すなわち奇跡は、カナの婚礼における水をぶどう酒に変えた出来事です（ヨハネ2:1-11）。

This was the first sign of Jesus, because the apostle John through the Gospel that he wrote recorded seven signs of Jesus.　 これがイエス様の最初のしるしであったのは、使徒ヨハネが記した福音書において、イエス様の七つのしるしが記録されているからです。

The apostle John recorded these miracles of Jesus to clearly demonstrate that Jesus is the Son of God.　 使徒ヨハネはこれらのイエス様の奇跡を記録し、イエス様が神の子であることを明らかに示そうとしたのです。

And, Pastor Furuyama showed us that the disciples who saw Jesus’ glory manifested through that first sign were transformed into believers in Jesus.　 そして古山牧師は、この最初のしるしを通して現れたイエス様の栄光を見た弟子たちが、イエス様を信じる者へと変えられたことを示してくださいました。

John 2:11（ヨハネ２章１１節）

This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him. イエスは、この最初のしるしをガリラヤのカナで行い、その栄光を現された。そして弟子たちはイエスを信じた。

A couple of Sundays ago, we looked at one of Jesus’ first disciples, Andrew.　 数週間前の日曜日、私たちはイエス様の最初の弟子の一人、アンデレについて学びました。

After Andrew heard John the Baptist point to Jesus and say, “Behold, the Lamb of God!”, he followed Jesus.　アンデレはバプテスマのヨハネがイエス様を指さして「見よ、神の小羊！」と言うのを聞いた後、イエス様に従いました。

In the Gospel of John, it records what Andrew did next.　 ヨハネの福音書には、アンデレがその後にとった行動が記されています。

John 1:41-42（ヨハネ１章４１節—４２節）

⁴¹ He found first his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which translated means Christ). ⁴² He brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon the son of John; you shall be called Cephas” (which is translated Peter). ⁴¹彼はまず自分の兄弟シモンに出会って言った、「わたしたちはメシヤ（訳せば、キリスト）にいま出会った」。⁴²そしてシモンをイエスのもとにつれてきた。イエスは彼に目をとめて言われた、「あなたはヨハネの子シモンである。あなたをケパ（訳せば、ペテロ）と呼ぶことにする」。

The first thing that Andrew did after meeting Jesus, was to introduce his brother Simon to Jesus.　 アンデレがイエス様と出会った後、最初にしたことは、兄のシモンをイエス様に紹介することでした。

Today, we will look at Andrew’s brother, Simon Peter.　今日は、アンデレの兄であるシモン・ペテロについて見ていきましょう。

As we can see in Simon’s first encounter with Jesus, he was given the name “Cephas” (Peter in Greek) by Jesus.　シモンがイエス様と初めて出会った時、イエス様から「ケパ」（ギリシャ語で「ペテロ」）という名前が与えられたことがわかります。

Cephas means “rock” or “stone” in Hebrew, symbolizing stability and strength.　 ケパはヘブライ語で「岩」や「石」を意味し、安定性と強さを象徴しています。

Jesus had high hopes for Peter, because he was a natural born leader.　 イエス様は、生まれつきのリーダーであるペテロに大きな期待を寄せていました。

Of course, these things inherent in Peter were all given to him by God.　 もちろん、ペテロに備わっていたこれらの資質は、すべて神様から与えられたものでした。

As pointed out in John MacArthur’s book Twelve Ordinary Men, ジョン・マッカーサーの著書『Twelve Ordinary Men』で指摘されているように、

three particular traits of a good leader are seen in Peter: Inquisitiveness, initiative, and involvement.　優れた指導者に必要な ３つの特徴、すなわち「探究心」、「率先力」、「関与力」がペテロには見られます。

Throughout the Gospels, we see Peter asking more questions than all the other apostles.　 　福音書全体を通して、ペテロは他のどの使徒よりも多くの質問をしていることがわかります。

He was usually the one who asked Jesus to explain His difficult sayings.　 通常、イエス様の難しい教えについて説明を求めるのはペテロでした。

Peter was inquisitive.　 ペテロは探究心旺盛な人物だったのです。

Not only did Peter ask questions of Jesus, but he was also usually the first one to answer any question that was posed by Jesus.　 ペテロはイエス様に質問しただけでなく、イエス様から投げかけられた質問には大抵、真っ先に答える人でもありました。

He often jumped ahead before thinking, always willing to be the first to respond.　 彼はよく考えもせず先走って、常に真っ先に反応しようとする者でした。

Peter was someone who took initiative.　 ペテロは率先して行動する者でした。

We also see how Peter seemed to always be in the middle of the action.　 また、ペテロが常に活動の中心にいる様子も見て取れます。

Who do you think wanted to jump out of the boat to walk with Jesus on the water?　 舟から飛び出して、イエス様と共に水の上を歩こうとしたのは誰だったと思いますか？

Who followed Jesus to the high priest’s house to see what would become of Jesus after His arrest?　 イエス様が捕らえられた後、イエス様に何が起こるのか見ようと、大祭司の屋敷までイエス様に従ったのは誰ですか？

Yes, Peter was someone who got involved.　 そうです、ペテロは自ら関わる人でした。

So, we see that Peter had some natural born characteristics to be a leader.　 こうして、ペテロには生まれながらのリーダーとしての資質があったことがわかります。

However, for Peter to become a strong and stable leader and to live up to his given name by Jesus, しかし、ペテロが強く、安定したリーダーとなり、イエス様から与えられた名にふさわしい者となるためには、

he needed to learn to truly build his life upon Jesus, who is the true solid rock.　真の堅固な岩であるイエス様の上に人生を築くことを学ぶ必要がありました。

Thus, we see throughout Peter’s life as Jesus’ disciple, that he goes through many spiritual ups and downs.　 こうして、イエス様の弟子としてのペテロの生涯を通して、彼が多くの霊的な浮き沈みを経験したことが分かります。

As an apostle, he experienced many exhilarating hills with a clear view of Jesus and His kingdom, 使徒として彼は、イエス様とその御国をはっきり見渡せる高揚感に満ちた丘を経験すると同時に、

as well as humiliating valleys in which he was taught his sinfulness and inadequacies.　自らの罪深さや不十分さを教え込まれる屈辱的な谷間も経験しました。

Thus, for this message, I call Simon Peter, the apostle of the hills and valleys.　ゆえにこのメッセージにおいて、私は彼を丘と谷間の使徒、シモン・ペテロと呼びます。

But as Peter went through these hills and valleys, He learned to trust in the God of the hills and valleys.　しかしペテロがこうした丘と谷間を歩む中で、彼は丘と谷間の神を信頼することを学んだのです。

Psalm 50:10-12（詩篇５０篇１０節—１２節）

¹⁰ “For every beast of the forest is Mine, the cattle on a thousand hills. ¹¹ I know every bird of the mountains, and everything that moves in the field is Mine. ¹² If I were hungry I would not tell you, for the world is Mine, and all it contains.” ¹⁰林のすべての獣はわたしのもの、丘の上の千々の家畜もわたしのものである。¹¹わたしは空の鳥をことごとく知っている。野に動くすべてのものはわたしのものである。¹²たといわたしは飢えても、あなたに告げない、世界とその中に満ちるものとはわたしのものだからである。

These verses describe God’s reign over the whole world, including hills and mountains.　 これらの聖句は、丘や山を含む全世界における神の支配を描いています。

At the same time, we know that God is with us throughout our journey in life, even in the valleys.　 同じように私達は人生の旅路において、谷間にあっても神が共におられることを知っています。

The shepherd boy turned king of Israel, David, knew this well.　 羊飼いの少年からイスラエルの王となったダビデは、このことをよく知っていました。

Psalm 23:4（詩篇２３篇４節）

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. たといわたしは死の陰の谷を歩むとも、わざわいを恐れません。あなたがわたしと共におられるからです。あなたのむちと、あなたのつえはわたしを慰めます。

David made this even more clear in the following psalm that he wrote.　 ダビデは、彼が書いた次の詩篇でこれをさらに明確にしました。

Psalm 139:7-10（詩篇１３９篇７節—１０節）

⁷ Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? ⁸ If I ascend to heaven, You are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there. ⁹ If I take the wings of the dawn, if I dwell in the remotest part of the sea, ¹⁰ even there Your hand will lead me, and Your right hand will lay hold of me. ⁷わたしはどこへ行って、あなたのみたまを離れましょうか。わたしはどこへ行って、あなたのみ前をのがれましょうか。⁸わたしが天にのぼっても、あなたはそこにおられます。わたしが陰府に床を設けても、あなたはそこにおられます。⁹わたしがあけぼのの翼をかって海のはてに住んでも、¹⁰あなたのみ手はその所でわたしを導き、あなたの右のみ手はわたしをささえられます。

Indeed, we trust in the God of the hills and valleys, the One who watches over us and sustains us through the ups and downs in our life. 確かに、私たちは丘や谷の神を信頼しています。このお方は人生の浮き沈みの中で私たちを見守り、支えてくださるお方です。

So, let’s look together at the rollercoaster-like life of Peter and learn from him how to live with God in the ups and downs of our own lives.　 それでは、ペテロのジェットコースターのような人生を共に振り返り、私たち自身の浮き沈みの中で神と共に生きる方法を彼から学びましょう。

I truly appreciate Peter, because he is so relatable.　 ペテロには心から共感します。なぜなら彼はとても身近な存在だからです。

We may not be as bold or impulsive or passionate as Peter.　 私たちはペテロほど大胆でも衝動的でも情熱的でもないかもしれません。

But we can all relate to failure and blunders in our own lives.　 しかし誰もが、自らの失敗や過ちには共感できるはずです。

Times when we run ahead of the crowd only to stumble and make a fool of ourselves.　 群衆より先走って転び、自らを愚かに見せてしまった時。

Times when we say something before thinking and feel like digging a hole in which to hide ourselves.　 考えもせず口を滑らせ、穴を掘って隠れたくなるような時。

We can relate to Peter, because he is truly human just like us with our good and bad times.　 ペテロは私たちと同じように、良い時も悪い時も経験する、まさに人間そのものです。だからこそ私たちは彼に共感できるのです。

Peter was fully made aware of his sinfulness through His encounter with Jesus.　 ペテロはイエス様との出会いを通して、自らの罪深さを痛感させられました。

This is what happened when Peter was still a fisherman.　 ペテロがまだ漁師だった頃の話です。

Peter was asked by Jesus to put out his boat, so that Jesus could teach the crowd of people on the shore from there.　 イエス様はペテロに舟を進めさせ、岸辺に集まった群衆にそこから教えを説くよう求めました。

After Jesus had finished speaking, He asked Peter to put out the boat into the deep water and let down his nets for a catch.　 イエス様が語り終えると、舟を深い水域に進め、網を下ろして漁をするようにペテロに命じました。

Though Peter and his fellow fishermen were tired because they had worked hard all night and caught nothing, they did as Jesus asked.　 ペテロと仲間の漁師たちは、一晩中懸命に働いたのに何も獲れず疲れていましたが、イエス様の言う通りにしました。

However, after doing so, their fishing nets were so filled that their nets began to break, and the catch of fish filled their boats so that they began to sink.　 ところが網を降ろすと、魚が大量にかかり網が破れそうになり、獲れた魚で舟が沈みそうになったのです。

Here was Peter’s response to all of this.　 これに対するペテロの反応はこうでした。

Luke 5:8-11（ルカ５章８節—１１節）

⁸ But when Simon Peter saw that, he fell down at Jesus’ feet, saying, “Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man!” ⁹ For amazement had seized him and all his companions because of the catch of fish which they had taken; ¹⁰ and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not fear, from now on you will be catching men.” ¹¹ When they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed Him. ⁸これを見てシモン・ペテロは、イエスのひざもとにひれ伏して言った、「主よ、わたしから離れてください。わたしは罪深い者です」。⁹彼も一緒にいた者たちもみな、取れた魚がおびただしいのに驚いたからである。¹⁰シモンの仲間であったゼベダイの子ヤコブとヨハネも、同様であった。すると、イエスがシモンに言われた、「恐れることはない。今からあなたは人間をとる漁師になるのだ」。¹¹そこで彼らは舟を陸に引き上げ、いっさいを捨ててイエスに従った。

Peter did not see the great big catch from a fisherman’s perspective as a great opportunity for developing a successful fishing business.　 ペテロは漁師の目線で見た大漁を、漁業を成功させる絶好の機会とは捉えませんでした。

Instead, Peter saw his true self in light of who Jesus was.　むしろペテロは、イエス様の存在を通して自らの真実の姿を見たのです。

He truly understood his spiritually bankrupt state and therefore confessed that he was a sinful man.　 彼は自らの霊的な破産状態を深く悟り、自らを罪深い者と告白したのです。

He then left his work as a fisherman, and followed Jesus.　 そして漁師の仕事を後にして、イエス様に従ったのです。

As Peter continued to follow Jesus as his Lord, he was fully made aware of the lack of his faith.　ペテロが主イエスに従い続ける中で、彼は自らの信仰の欠如を痛感させられました。

This was made evident when he and the other disciples were told by Jesus to get into a boat and go ahead of Him to the other side.　このことは、イエス様がペテロと他の弟子たちに舟に乗り、先に岸の向こうへ渡るよう命じた時に明らかになりました。

This took place right after Jesus had fed the five thousand men plus women and children with five barley loaves and two fish.　 このことはイエス様が五つの大麦のパンと二匹の魚で五千人の男に加え、女や子供たちをも養った直後に起こりました。

Matthew 14:22-33（マタイ１４章２２節—３３節）

²² Immediately He made the disciples get into the boat and go ahead of Him to the other side, while He sent the crowds away. ²³ After He had sent the crowds away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray; and when it was evening, He was there alone. ²⁴ But the boat was already a long distance from the land, battered by the waves; for the wind was contrary. ²⁵ And in the fourth watch (3 to 6 a.m.) of the night He came to them, walking on the sea. ²⁶ When the disciples saw Him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out in fear. ²⁷ But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid.” ²⁸ Peter said to Him, “Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.” ²⁹ And He said, “Come!” And Peter got out of the boat, and walked on the water and came toward Jesus. ³⁰ But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” ³¹ Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” ³² When they got into the boat, the wind stopped. ³³ And those who were in the boat worshiped Him, saying, “You are certainly God’s Son!” ²²それからすぐ、イエスは群衆を解散させておられる間に、しいて弟子たちを舟に乗り込ませ、向こう岸へ先におやりになった。²³そして群衆を解散させてから、祈るためひそかに山へ登られた。夕方になっても、ただひとりそこにおられた。²⁴ところが舟は、もうすでに陸から数丁も離れており、逆風が吹いていたために、波に悩まされていた。²⁵イエスは夜明けの四時ごろ、海の上を歩いて彼らの方へ行かれた。²⁶弟子たちは、イエスが海の上を歩いておられるのを見て、幽霊だと言っておじ惑い、恐怖のあまり叫び声をあげた。²⁷しかし、イエスはすぐに彼らに声をかけて、「しっかりするのだ、わたしである。恐れることはない」と言われた。²⁸するとペテロが答えて言った、「主よ、あなたでしたか。では、わたしに命じて、水の上を渡ってみもとに行かせてください」。²⁹イエスは、「おいでなさい」と言われたので、ペテロは舟からおり、水の上を歩いてイエスのところへ行った。³⁰しかし、風を見て恐ろしくなり、そしておぼれかけたので、彼は叫んで、「主よ、お助けください」と言った。³¹イエスはすぐに手を伸ばし、彼をつかまえて言われた、「信仰の薄い者よ、なぜ疑ったのか」。³²ふたりが舟に乗り込むと、風はやんでしまった。³³舟の中にいた者たちはイエスを拝して、「ほんとうに、あなたは神の子です」と言った。

Peter had enough faith to obey Jesus’ command to come to Him on the water.　 ペテロは、水の上を歩いてイエス様のもとに来なさいという命令に従うだけの信仰を持っていました。

However, Peter didn’t have the faith that Jesus could continually enable him to walk on the water regardless of the circumstances that surrounded him.　 しかし、周囲の状況にかかわらず、イエス様が絶えず水の上を歩む力を与えてくださるという信仰は持っていませんでした。

Through this experience though, Peter learned that Jesus was right there to save him when he needed to be lifted up out of the water when he sank.　 この経験を通して、ペテロは沈みかけ、水から救い上げられる必要がある時、イエス様がすぐそばにいて救ってくださることを学びました。

This is something that we should remember as well.　 このことは私たちも心に留めておくべきことです。

Let us remember to keep our eyes on Jesus and to trust in Him to keep us from drowning due to our fear and doubt.　 恐れや疑いによって溺れそうになる時、イエス様に目を留め、救い主を信頼することを覚えましょう。

Whenever we find ourselves in trying and difficult circumstances that are beyond our control, we should also cry out in faith, “Lord, save me!”　 制御不能な試練や困難に直面する時は、信仰をもって叫び求めましょう。「主よ、助けてください！」と。

Jesus will surely stretch out His hand and take hold of us.　 イエス様は必ず御手を伸ばして私たちの手を握ってくださいます。

As Peter continued to follow Jesus as his Lord, he was also fully made aware of his lack of spiritual insight.　 ペテロが彼の主、イエス様に従い続ける中で、彼は自らの霊的な洞察力の欠如を痛感しました。

Here again, we see the spiritual highs of Peter and the spiritual lows of Peter.　 ここでもまた、ペテロの霊的な高みと低みが明らかになります。

Matthew 16:13-20（マタイ１６章１３節—２０節）

¹³ Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” ¹⁴ And they said, “Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.” ¹⁵ He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” ¹⁶ Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” ¹⁷ And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Barjona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. ¹⁸ I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. ¹⁹ I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.” ²⁰ Then He warned the disciples that they should tell no one that He was the Christ. ¹³イエスがピリポ・カイザリヤの地方に行かれたとき、弟子たちに尋ねて言われた、「人々は人の子をだれと言っているか」。¹⁴彼らは言った、「ある人々はバプテスマのヨハネだと言っています。しかし、ほかの人たちは、エリヤだと言い、また、エレミヤあるいは預言者のひとりだ、と言っている者もあります」。¹⁵そこでイエスは彼らに言われた、「それでは、あなたがたはわたしをだれと言うか」。¹⁶シモン・ペテロが答えて言った、「あなたこそ、生ける神の子キリストです」。¹⁷すると、イエスは彼にむかって言われた、「バルヨナ・シモン、あなたはさいわいである。あなたにこの事をあらわしたのは、血肉ではなく、天にいますわたしの父である。¹⁸そこで、わたしもあなたに言う。あなたはペテロである。そして、わたしはこの岩の上にわたしの教会を建てよう。黄泉の力もそれに打ち勝つことはない。¹⁹わたしは、あなたに天国のかぎを授けよう。そして、あなたが地上でつなぐことは、天でもつながれ、あなたが地上で解くことは天でも解かれるであろう」。²⁰そのとき、イエスは、自分がキリストであることをだれにも言ってはいけないと、弟子たちを戒められた。

Peter must have felt exhilarated that his Lord Jesus had commended him and blessed him.　　ペテロは主イエスに称賛され、祝福されたことに、きっと胸が高鳴ったに違いありません。

Here is what happened soon thereafter.　 その直後に起こったことは次の通りです。

Matthew 16:21-23（マタイ１６章２１節—２３節）

²¹ From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day. ²² Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “God forbid it, Lord! This shall never happen to You.” ²³ But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s.” ²¹この時から、イエス・キリストは、自分が必ずエルサレムに行き、長老、祭司長、律法学者たちから多くの苦しみを受け、殺され、そして三日目によみがえるべきことを、弟子たちに示しはじめられた。²²すると、ペテロはイエスをわきへ引き寄せて、いさめはじめ、「主よ、とんでもないことです。そんなことがあるはずはございません」と言った。²³イエスは振り向いて、ペテロに言われた、「サタンよ、引きさがれ。わたしの邪魔をする者だ。あなたは神のことを思わないで、人のことを思っている」。

Peter had just confessed concerning his Lord Jesus, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”　 ペテロは主イエスについて「あなたはキリスト、生ける神の御子です」と告白したばかりでした。

And now Peter was rebuking Jesus, forbidding Him to do what He must do.　 ところが今、ペテロはイエス様を叱責し、主が成さねばならないことを禁じたのです。

One moment, Peter was being commended for having been given true spiritual revelation from the Heavenly Father.　 一時、ペテロは天の父から真の霊的啓示を与えられたと称賛されていました。

And in the next moment, Peter was being rebuked for being a stumbling block because he was siding himself with Satan, the father of lies.　 次の瞬間には、偽りの父であるサタンに味方したため、つまずきの石となる者として叱責されました。

Talk about a spiritually rollercoaster experience!　 まさにこのことは霊的なジェットコースター体験と言えるでしょう！

This is how Peter was, and this is the Peter that Jesus loved and discipled to become a stable and strong part of the building up of His Church.　 これがペテロの姿であり、イエス様が愛し、弟子として育て、御自身の教会を築く上で確固たる強固な礎となるようにされたペテロなのです。

However, Peter’s training was not over.　 しかし、ペテロの訓練はまだ終わっていませんでした。

There was still a valley that he needed to go through.　 彼にはまだ通らねばならない谷がありました。

Peter was fully made aware of his limitations through his encounter with Jesus’ arrest and subsequent trials that lead to the death of his Lord upon a cross.　ペテロは、主イエスの逮捕とそれに続く裁判、そして十字架上の主の死に至る過程を通して、自らの限界を痛感させられました。

He was even made aware of this before Jesus was arrested.　 彼は、イエス様が逮捕される前から、このことを悟らされていたのです。

Luke 22:31-34（ルカ２２章３１節—３４節）

³¹ “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded permission to sift you like wheat; ³² but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” ³³ But he said to Him, “Lord, with You I am ready to go both to prison and to death!” ³⁴ And He said, “I say to you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know Me.” ³¹シモン、シモン、見よ、サタンはあなたがたを麦のようにふるいにかけることを願って許された。³²しかし、わたしはあなたの信仰がなくならないように、あなたのために祈った。それで、あなたが立ち直ったときには、兄弟たちを力づけてやりなさい」。³³シモンが言った、「主よ、わたしは獄にでも、また死に至るまでも、あなたとご一緒に行く覚悟です」。³⁴するとイエスが言われた、「ペテロよ、あなたに言っておく。きょう、鶏が鳴くまでに、あなたは三度わたしを知らないと言うだろう」。

Here, we see Jesus’ intercession for Simon Peter.　 ここで、イエス様がシモン・ペテロのために執り成しをなさっている様子が見てとれます。

Kind of like a Job moment in Peter’s life.　 ペテロの人生における、いわばヨブのような試練の時です。

Peter was going to, so to speak, be put through the wringer by Satan.　 ペテロは、いわばサタンによって試練の渦に巻き込まれることになりました。

Yet, Jesus assured Peter that he will come through it and be able to be the apostle that Jesus has called him to be to strengthen his fellow Christian brothers and sisters. 　 しかしイエス様は、ペテロが試練を乗り越え、主が召された使徒としての使命を果たし、兄弟姉妹を強める者となれると確約されました。

As many of you know, as Jesus had forewarned him, Peter ended up denying Jesus three times.　 ご存知の通り、イエス様の予言通り、ペテロは結局三度イエス様を否認しました。

All four Gospels clearly record Peter’s denial of Jesus.　四福音書全てがペテロの否認を明確に記録しています。

However, Luke’s Gospel account expresses Peter’s agony in doing so most vividly.　その中で ルカの福音書は、その行為におけるペテロの苦悩を最も鮮烈に伝えています。

Luke 22:59-62（ルカ２２章５９節—６２節）

⁵⁹ After about an hour had passed, another man began to insist, saying, “Certainly this man also was with Him, for he is a Galilean too.” ⁶⁰ But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. ⁶¹ The Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him, “Before a rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.” ⁶² And he went out and wept bitterly. ⁵⁹約一時間たってから、またほかの者が言い張った、「たしかにこの人もイエスと一緒だった。この人もガリラヤ人なのだから」。⁶⁰ペテロは言った、「あなたの言っていることは、わたしにわからない」。すると、彼がまだ言い終らぬうちに、たちまち、鶏が鳴いた。⁶¹主は振りむいてペテロを見つめられた。そのときペテロは、「きょう、鶏が鳴く前に、三度わたしを知らないと言うであろう」と言われた主のお言葉を思い出した。⁶²そして外へ出て、激しく泣いた。

I don’t know about you, but what Luke recorded here, specifically, “The Lord turned and looked at Peter,” is very chilling.　皆さんはどう思うか分かりませんが、ルカがここに記録した「主は振り返ってペテロを見た」という箇所は、特に背筋が凍るほどです。

To be looked at by Jesus who he loved and confessed allegiance to, but he had just denied three times!　 愛し、忠誠を誓ったイエス様に見つめられるとは！しかも三度も否定した直後に！

We cannot fully comprehend how horrible Peter must have felt at that moment.　 その瞬間、ペテロがどれほど恐ろしい思いをしたか、私たちは完全には理解できません。

At the same time, we cannot fully comprehend how Jesus felt toward Peter at that moment.　 同時に、その瞬間イエス様がペテロに対して抱いた感情も、私たちは完全には理解できません。

However, I believe that in Jesus’ eyes, assuming that Peter’s eyes met Jesus’ eyes, Peter did not see disappointment or condemnation but rather love and compassion there.　 しかし、仮にペテロの目がイエス様の目と合ったとすれば、イエス様の目には失望や非難ではなく、愛と憐れみが宿っていたと私は信じます。

I am sure it was the same gaze as that which Jesus had as He looked out at the people who stood before Him while He was on the cross, それは、十字架にかけられたイエス様が、御前に立つ人々を見つめながら

in which He prayed, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.”　「父よ、彼らをお赦しください。彼らは、何をしているのか分からずにいるのです」と祈られた時と同じ眼差しであったに違いありません。

The reality is that Peter really didn’t know what he was doing.　 現実には、ペテロは本当に自分が何をしているのか分かっていませんでした。

He was relying on his own ability to follow and serve Jesus rather than placing his complete faith and reliance in Jesus.　 彼は、イエス様に完全な信仰と信頼を置くのではなく、自らの力でイエス様に従い、仕えようとしていたのです。

After Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection, Peter was fully made aware of his lack of love through His encounter with the resurrected Jesus.　 イエス様の十字架刑と復活の後、ペテロは復活したイエス様との出会いを通して、自らの愛の欠如を完全に自覚しました。

John 21:15-19（ヨハネ２１章１５節—１９節）

¹⁵ So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Tend My lambs.” ¹⁶ He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Shepherd My sheep.” ¹⁷ He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Tend My sheep. ¹⁸ Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were younger, you used to gird yourself and walk wherever you wished; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will gird you, and bring you where you do not wish to go.” ¹⁹ Now this He said, signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, “Follow Me!” ¹⁵彼らが食事をすませると、イエスはシモン・ペテロに言われた、「ヨハネの子シモンよ、あなたはこの人たちが愛する以上に、わたしを愛するか」。ペテロは言った、「主よ、そうです。わたしがあなたを愛することは、あなたがご存じです」。イエスは彼に「わたしの小羊を養いなさい」と言われた。¹⁶またもう一度彼に言われた、「ヨハネの子シモンよ、わたしを愛するか」。彼はイエスに言った、「主よ、そうです。わたしがあなたを愛することは、あなたがご存じです」。イエスは彼に言われた、「わたしの羊を飼いなさい」。¹⁷イエスは三度目に言われた、「ヨハネの子シモンよ、わたしを愛するか」。ペテロは「わたしを愛するか」とイエスが三度も言われたので、心をいためてイエスに言った、「主よ、あなたはすべてをご存じです。わたしがあなたを愛していることは、おわかりになっています」。イエスは彼に言われた、「わたしの羊を養いなさい。¹⁸よくよくあなたに言っておく。あなたが若かった時には、自分で帯をしめて、思いのままに歩きまわっていた。しかし年をとってからは、自分の手をのばすことになろう。そして、ほかの人があなたに帯を結びつけ、行きたくない所へ連れて行くであろう」。¹⁹これは、ペテロがどんな死に方で、神の栄光をあらわすかを示すために、お話しになったのである。こう話してから、「わたしに従ってきなさい」と言われた。

Through this intimate time with his Lord Jesus, Peter was once again made aware of His calling as Jesus’ apostle.　 主イエスとのこの親密な時を通して、ペテロは再び、イエス様の使徒としての自分の召しが自覚されました。

And then on the day of Pentecost, Peter was fully made aware that His calling as Jesus’ apostle was being fulfilled by the empowerment of the Holy Spirit そして五旬節の日、ペテロは、その日、イエス様の他の使徒や弟子たちと共に注がれた聖霊の力によって、

that was poured out upon him and Jesus’ other apostles and disciples on that day.　イエス様の使徒としての自分の召しが成就しつつあることを完全に自覚したのです。

What took place on that day is recorded for us in detail in Acts 2.　 その日に起こったことは、使徒行伝第２章に詳細に記されています。

After the Holy Spirit was poured out upon them, Peter gave a sermon in response to the amazed crowd that had gathered around them as Jesus’ disciples spoke in various languages.　 聖霊が彼らに注がれた後、イエス様の弟子たちが様々な言語で語りかけると、驚いた群衆が集まってきて、ペテロは彼らに向かって説教を行いました。

Peter explained that what was being observed by all of them was based on the fulfillment of God’s promise given in the Old Testament Scriptures ペテロは、皆が目の当たりにしていることは、旧約聖書に記された神の約束が、

through the sending of His Son Jesus Christ, who was crucified, buried, resurrected and ascended back to heaven.　十字架にかけられ、葬られ、復活し、天に昇られた御子イエス・キリストの遣わしによって成就したことに基づいていると説明したのです。

Peter made it clear that their ability to speak in various languages was made possible because as God’s Son, the resurrected and exalted Christ Jesus, ペテロは、彼らが様々な言語で語ることができたのは、復活し栄光を受けたキリスト・イエスという神の子が、

poured forth God’s promise of the Holy Spirit upon them.彼らの上に聖霊という神の約束を注ぎ出したからだと明らかにしたのです。

We then see the result of Peter’s Spirit-led message to the crowd that was gathered there in Jerusalem on the day of Pentecost.　 そして私たちは、ペンテコステの日にエルサレムに集まった群衆に向けて、ペテロが聖霊に導かれて語ったメッセージの結果を目にするのです。

Acts 2:37-41（使徒行伝２章３７節—４１節）

³⁷ Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brethren, what shall we do?” ³⁸ Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. ³⁹ For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.” ⁴⁰ And with many other words he solemnly testified and kept on exhorting them, saying, “Be saved from this perverse generation!” ⁴¹ So then, those who had received his word were baptized; and that day there were added about three thousand souls. ³⁷人々はこれを聞いて、強く心を刺され、ペテロやほかの使徒たちに、「兄弟たちよ、わたしたちは、どうしたらよいのでしょうか」と言った。³⁸すると、ペテロが答えた、「悔い改めなさい。そして、あなたがたひとりびとりが罪のゆるしを得るために、イエス・キリストの名によって、バプテスマを受けなさい。そうすれば、あなたがたは聖霊の賜物を受けるであろう。³⁹この約束は、われらの主なる神の召しにあずかるすべての者、すなわちあなたがたと、あなたがたの子らと、遠くの者一同とに、与えられているものである」。⁴⁰ペテロは、ほかになお多くの言葉であかしをなし、人々に「この曲った時代から救われよ」と言って勧めた。⁴¹そこで、彼の勧めの言葉を受けいれた者たちは、バプテスマを受けたが、その日、仲間に加わったものが三千人ほどあった。

Thereafter, Peter had many opportunities to proclaim the message of salvation and the fulfillment of God’s promise through Jesus Christ.　 その後、ペテロは救いのメッセージと、イエス・キリストを通して成就した神の約束を宣べ伝える多くの機会を得ました。

And through the convicting work of the Holy Spirit, many people came to the saving knowledge of Jesus as their Lord and Savior.　 そして、有罪を自覚させる聖霊の働きを通して、多くの人々が救い主イエスを主として知るに至りました。

Peter truly enjoyed the blessings of experiencing God’s intervention in his life.　 ペテロは、神様が自らの人生に介入されるという祝福を真に享受しました。

Peter truly experienced God at work in his life.　 ペテロは、神様が自らの人生に働いておられることを真に体験したのです。

He was sifted by Satan but came out on the other side made strong in the Holy Spirit through Jesus’ intercession.　 彼はサタンによってふるいにかけられましたが、イエス様の執り成しを通して聖霊に強められ、その試練を乗り越えました。

Through the hills and valleys and the ups and downs in his life, Peter learned to trust in and hold on more tightly to his Lord Jesus Christ.　 人生の起伏や山谷、浮き沈みを通して、ペテロは主イエス・キリストを信頼し、より強くすがることを学びました。

We too would do well to do the same.　私たちも同様に歩むことが大切です。

In closing, I would like to read a portion of what Peter wrote to the believers that were scattered throughout Asia Minor that he had ministered to.　 最後に、ペテロが小アジア各地に散らばった信徒たち（彼が牧会した人々）に記した手紙の一部を朗読したいと思います。

1 Peter 5:5-11（第一ペテロ５章５節—１１節）

and all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble. ⁶ Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, ⁷ casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. ⁸ Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. ⁹ But resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world. ¹⁰ After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you. ¹¹ To Him be dominion forever and ever. Amen. また、みな互に謙遜を身につけなさい。神は高ぶる者をしりぞけ、へりくだる者に恵みを賜うからである。⁶だから、あなたがたは、神の力強い御手の下に、自らを低くしなさい。時が来れば神はあなたがたを高くして下さるであろう。⁷神はあなたがたをかえりみていて下さるのであるから、自分の思いわずらいを、いっさい神にゆだねるがよい。⁸身を慎み、目をさましていなさい。あなたがたの敵である悪魔が、ほえたけるししのように、食いつくすべきものを求めて歩き回っている。⁹この悪魔にむかい、信仰にかたく立って、抵抗しなさい。あなたがたのよく知っているとおり、全世界にいるあなたがたの兄弟たちも、同じような苦しみの数々に会っているのである。¹⁰あなたがたをキリストにある永遠の栄光に招き入れて下さったあふるる恵みの神は、しばらくの苦しみの後、あなたがたをいやし、強め、力づけ、不動のものとして下さるであろう。¹¹どうか、力が世々限りなく、神にあるように、アァメン。

Peter who himself had experienced being sifted by Satan, reminds us of the real enemy that is out to get us.　 ペテロ自身、サタンによってふるいにかけられた経験を持つ者として、私たちを陥れようとする真の敵を思い出させます。

At the same time, he reminds us that just as Jesus interceded for him, and he was able to come out stronger after that experience, 同時に、イエス様が彼のために執り成してくださったように、その経験を経てより強くなれたように、

we too will be perfected, confirmed, strengthened and established by God.　私たちもまた神様によって完全とされ、確かな者とされ、強められ、堅く立たされることを教えています。

And in all of this, we are to maintain an attitude of humility, relying on the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, whose dominion is forever and ever.　そしてこのすべてにおいて、私たちは謙遜な姿勢を保ち、主イエス・キリストの恵みに頼らねばなりません。その主権は永遠に続くのです。

He is indeed the Lord of the hills and valleys and everything in between.　 主は確かに、山も谷も、その間のあらゆるものの主です。

Like Peter, let us continually put our trust in our Lord Jesus Christ and follow Him.　 ペテロのように、私たちも絶えず主イエス・キリストを信頼し、主に従い続けましょう。
