今日は母の日です。日々、家族のために子供達のために労を惜しまない、お母さん達に対して、私は何も言う言葉のないものです。しかし、あえて母の日、一言だけお母さん達へエールを送りたいと思います。それは、お母さん達がどんな能力があるとか、どんなものを持っているかということは、あまり大きな問題ではないということです。神を畏れ、神を信頼して、神に従って生きているか否か、それこそが最も大事なことなのです。それこそが母が子に残すことができる最大の財産であり、そう生きる時に、この厳しい時代であっても、私たちは神様の驚くべきみわざと祝福を垣間見ることができるのです。

母の日に贈る言葉

 今日は母の日です。私たちには誰もが自分を産んでくれた母がいます。もちろん、今も健在しているか否かはそれぞれ異なります。また今現在、母親であるという方もいます。そして、聖書の中にも母が数多く出てきます。

 私達は礼拝において「一つにとらわれずに全体を！」というシリーズから毎週、聖書中の一書をみています。そして、先週は列王記下から神様は歴史を通して今日も私達に語りかけているということをお話しました。その中で神様は退廃していくイスラエルの民に対して何度も預言者を通して語られたということをお話しました。全体をお話するというメッセージの性質上、その預言者について細かく触れることができなかったのですが、今日は母の日ということで列王記の中に出てくる一人の預言者とある母子についてお話させていただきます。

 今日、預言者エリヤと共に登場する女性は未亡人であり、一人の男の子の母親でした。彼女の名前はここに記録されることなく聖書はただ彼女をザレパテのやもめと呼んでいます。まず出来事の背景を説明しましょう。

 先週、北イスラエル王国には１９人の王が起こり、その１９人全てが悪王であったということをお話しました。その悪王の中でも最悪の王であったといわれるのがアハブという王でした。そして、その最悪さを際立たせた一つの理由はこれまた聖書中、最悪の妻と言われているイゼベルという女がこのアハブの妻だったことによります。

 イゼベルはバアルという偶像の熱烈な崇拝者でした。彼女はイスラエルからバアル以外の神を拝む者を一掃し、根絶し、バアル崇拝をイスラエルの国教にしようとしていました。そして、アハブ王はこの妻、イゼベルに振り回されていたといえます。

 そして、彼らと同じ時代に活躍した預言者としてエリヤという人物がいました。彼は神に対して熱い情熱をもった預言者でして、まさしく燃えるような思いでこのアハブとイゼベルに立ち向かったのです。

 当時、全国民が豊作祈願をバアルにしていた時に、エリヤは列王記上１７章１節でこのように宣言しています「わたしの仕えているイスラエルの神、主は生きておられます。わたしの言葉のないうちは、数年雨も露もないでしょう」。まさしく、これはバアルに祈る者達に対抗する言葉で、このエリヤの言葉のごとくそれから３年６ヶ月の間、イスラエル全土に雨が降ることはなく、雨がないのですから当然、飢饉がやってきました。その飢饉の困難は当然、それを預言したエリヤにも降りかかるわけで、神様はエリヤをヨルダンの東、ケリテ川のほとりに導き、そこで彼は川の水を飲み、神様はカラスに命じて朝ごとにパンと肉を運ばせて、エリヤを養いました。しかし、やがてこのケリテ川の水も枯れてしまったのです。

 そこで神様は１７章８節、９節でエリアにこう言いました「立ってシドンに属するザレパテへ行って、そこに住みなさい。わたしはそのところのやもめ女に命じてあなたを養わせよう」。

 ここで出てくる“シドンに属するザレパテ”とは地名を示します。そこはフェニキア人の住む土地で、イスラエルから言いますと外国でありました。故に文化も宗教も違う土地でありました。このやもめが何人であったかは聖書には書かれていません。フェニキア人であった可能性もありますが、エリヤと自由に話したり、彼を自分の家にかくまったりしていることを見ると、もしかしたらエリアと同じイスラエル人で、彼女の死んだ夫はフェニキア人だったのかもしれません。言わば外国人と国際結婚をして、彼女は異国の地に暮らしていたのかもしれません。やがて息子が生まれたけれど、不幸にも夫が死んでしまい、女手一つで幼い子供を育ててきた。おそらくそんな状況にいたのではないかと思われます。

 しかもその時は雨が降らない飢饉の時、彼女と息子はとても窮していたようです。それは既に限界に達しており、手元にある一握りのパンの粉と少しの油で食事をして死のうというほどに、彼らは切羽つまった状況にいました。彼女たちの現状は他者に何かを与えることなどできるはずもない状況にいたのです。神様はエリヤにいくらでも食料があるような富豪の家に行くようにと言われたのではなく本来、窮地に追い込まれているやもめの元に行くようにと言われたのです。

 さらに列王記を注意深く見ますとかの悪妻イゼベルについて列王記上１６章３１節は「シドン人の王エテバアルの娘イゼベルをめとり・・・・」と記しています。すなわち預言者エリヤが命をかけて対峙していますこのアハブ王の悪妻イゼベルとは、もともとシドンの王女だったのです。すなわちこのやもめが住んでいたシドンに属するザレパテとはイゼベルの国のことで、当然そこはバアル宗教の中心地であり、そこに行きなさいという神様の命令はエリヤにとって敵の真っ只中に行きなさいということを意味したのです。普通は敵から離れなさい、逃げなさいというのが常識的な考えですが、神様は時に私達の考えがおよばないことを求めることがあるのです。

 エリヤがザレパテに来てみますとそこには神様が言われた通りに、ひとりのやもめがおり、彼女は町の門でたきぎを拾っていました。彼はその女に声をかけて言いました「器に水を少し持ってきて、わたしに飲ませてください」（列王記上１７章１０節）。雨のない、全ての川が枯れ果ててしまっているような時に水一杯は貴重であったに違いありません。

 彼女の心中は察しかねますが、エリヤの言葉に従い彼女が水を持ってこようとした時、エリヤは彼女を呼び止めて言いました「手に一口のパンを持ってきてください」（列王記上１７章１１節）。さすがにやもめはその願いに対して応えました「あなたの神、主は生きておられます。わたしにはパンはありません。ただ、かめに一握りの粉と、びんに少しの油があるだけです。今わたしはたきぎ二、三本を拾い、うちへ帰って、わたしと子供のためにそれを調理し、それを食べて死のうとしているのです」。

 この一文を読む時に私たちは彼女とその子の姿が目に浮かんでくるようです。その彼らにエリヤは言いました「恐れるにはおよばない。行って、あなたが言ったとおりにしなさい。しかし、まず、それでわたしのために小さなパンを一つ作って持ってきなさい。その後、あなたとあなたの子供のために作りなさい。主が雨を地のおもてに降らす日まで、かめの粉は尽きず、びんの油は絶えない」とイスラエルの神、主が言われるからです」。

 それを聞いた彼女は「あなたは何と非常識で身勝手な人なのか？」と言うことができたと思います。こっちは親子で生きるか死ぬかの所にいる、その最後のわずかな食べ物までも恵むように言うなんて！また、先ほどもお話しましたように、エリヤはイゼベルの息のかかる所にいるのです。彼女にこのお捜し者で危険人物は自分を養ってくれと言っているのです。王の妻の宿敵を養うなんてことは、普通では考えられないこであり、それはやもめとその子にとって命に関わることであったに違いありません。しかし、１５節を見ますと、このやもめは行って、エリヤの言ったとおりにしたのです。そして、それがこのやもめ親子の人生を変えました。

 皆さん、枝三本、パンの粉一握り、そして少しの油、これらが彼女たちが持っていた全財産でした。皆さん、こんなわずかなものから何かが起ると思いますか。新しいことが始まると思いますか。「あんた、主が再び地に雨を降らすその時まで、かめの粉は尽きず、びんの油は絶えないと言ったって、そんなことありえないでしょう」。それが極めて常識的な考えです。しかし、彼女が信仰をもって一歩を踏み出した時に驚くべき世界が開けたのです。すなわち、このやもめ親子には、エリヤが言った通りのことが起きたのです。これが本当に最後と思って使ったパンの粉と油、しかし、その後、このパンの粉と油は絶えることがありませんでした。

 皆さん、この出来事は何を意味するのでしょうか。今日、帰りに今日のメッセージを実践するべく、ここぞとばかりに多くの買い物をする。そして数日後に銀行に行って残高を調べてみたら、残高は変わることがないということが信仰者には起こるのです、やってごらんなさいということでしょうか。どうか試さないでください。私達の支払いは変わりませんから！神様は私たちが好む物を際限なく手に入れることを最も大切なこととしているのではないのです。それではこの出来事は私たちに何を語りかけているのでしょうか。

 今までお話してきましたエリヤとやもめ親子の話は旧約聖書に書かれている、その名の通り旧い契約の時代の出来事でした。今、私たちは新しい契約の時代に生きています。そして、この新しい契約について書いている新約聖書において「パン」とは「イエス・キリスト」をさします。

 ヨハネ６章３５節でイエス・キリストが言われているとおりです「わたしが命のパンである。わたしに来る者は決して飢えることがなく、わたしを信じる者は決して乾くことがない」。

 そして「油」とは「聖霊」を指すのです。マタイ２５章にはイエスによって語られた「１０人のおとめが明かりを手にして花婿を迎えに行く」譬が記されています。その内の５人のおとめは思慮が深く、明かりのために余分な油を用意していました。しかし他の５人の思慮が浅いおとめたちは油を用意していなかったのです。この油は何を示していたのでしょうか、それは私たちに注がれる聖霊、Ｈｏｌｙ　Ｓｐｉｒｉｔを意味しています。

 この二つ、すなわち「イエス・キリスト」と「聖霊」は今の時代に絶えることがないということが大切なのです。そして、別の言い方をするならば、この二つが絶えることがないのならば、私たちの必要も与えられるということです。なぜなら、今日、私たちの必要はこのキリストと聖霊様を通して私たちに与えられるからです。

 私達の生きる世界は厳しい世界です。私達には日ごとに色々な必要があり、それに応えていくことは波大抵のことではありません。牧師であっても、賑やかな子供たちが眠りにつき、布団をかけにベッドに行き、その寝顔を見ていると、昼間、聞いた話を思いだすのです。「そういえば、色々と聞くところによると子供が高校を出て、進学するとなると一人あたり何十万ドルもかかるらしいなー。うちは×３だし、どう逆立ちしても無理だなー」と。

 しかし、そのような時に主の御言葉が心に語りかけてくるのです「エリヤの神様は生きている」。その言葉は自分が聖書を読んで覚えた言葉ではないのです。その言葉は私の母が幼い時に繰り返し、私に語ってくれた言葉なのです。そして、おそらく、この言葉は私にとってだけ特別な言葉だったのではなくて、おそらく日本の牧師家庭に育った子供なら誰もが親から聞いて、その心に刻まれている言葉なのです。何かあると私達はいつも「エリアの神様がいるから」とか「エリアのカラスが飛んでくる」、さらには「主の山には備えあり」という言葉を親から聞いて育ってきたのです。

 身内の話ですが、妻は七人兄弟の長女として牧師家庭で育ちました。私にとっての義理の父母は生涯、九州で伝道牧会をし、今も大分でそのはたらきをしています。アメリカならまだ教会や牧師というものは社会的に認知されていますが、父母はクリスチャン人口が一パーセントに満たない国の田舎町で伝道している牧師なのです。高校生の頃、私は夜中にバイクを運転していて警察にとめられて、おまわりさんの聴集を受けたことがあります。住所、生年月日、他諸々聞かれまして、親の職業は何かと言うので「牧師です」と言いましたら、驚いたように「へー、お父さんはボクシングをしているのか」と言われました。それぐらい、牧師というものが認知されていない国なのです。

 当然、家内の父母に七人の子達への進学への学費などはありません。もちろん、その背後には新聞配達や育英会のローンというものがあったのですが、結果として皆がそれぞれ自分の進みたい道の学業を全うして今日あるのです。これは不思議です。「ない」のに「あった」のですから。

 私たちの教団には大川道雄先生がいらっしゃいます。サンディエゴでも長い間、日本語部牧師として尊い働きをして下さいました。先生は牧師の子として育ちました。その弟である大川従道先生が書かれた「教会成長うらおもて」という著書の中で「驚くべき貧困家庭」という自分の生まれ育った家庭について書いています。

 その書によりますと、先生の育った家はあまりにも貧しいので、教会に火でもつければ両親は伝道をやめるのではないかと思ったことや、父親にはかなわないので、母親の一枚しかない外出着を燃やしてしまったり、頭髪を引っ張ったり、蹴飛ばしたり、踏んづけたり、さんざん親に反抗したことが書かれています。

 そんな従道先生をお母さんはいつも「今のお前は本当のお前ではないよ。必ず、主に用いられる人物になるよ」と言って聞かせてくれたそうです。そんな夢のような言葉や優しい態度が、反抗しながらも先生の心の奥に残っていたそうです（その時、お母様は思ってみたことでしょうか。この息子が後に日本で一番、大きな教会の牧師になるということを！）。

 そのお母さんは貧しくてもけっして不平や愚痴を言いませんでした。そして、口癖のように「エリヤの神様は生きているよ」と子供たちに言い聞かせたというのです。子供たちも「エリヤの神様なんてどこにいるんだ」などとからかっていたようですが、その神に対する信頼心は反発していた子供の心に「神なんかいるもんか」と口では言いながら、神への畏敬を教え、「まず神の国と神の義とを求める」なら、必ず、神様は必要を満たしてくれることを心にとめさせてくれたといいます。明日食べるお米がなくても、感謝して就寝する母の姿は驚きでもあり、頼もしくもあり、祈りがこたえられて、早朝「ドスーン」という音とともに玄関前に米俵が置かれてあるのを見て、信頼するものに恥をかかせたまわない神様の存在を学ばせられたというのです。

 皆さん、大川先生は嘘をついているのでしょうか。皆さん、エリヤの神様は作り話ですか？牧師の末席にいて、まさしくやもめであった母親に育てられたこの者もこのことに対して確信をもって言うことができます。このお方は今も生きておられるということを、そして、あの何もないやもめが神に信頼して従っていった時にその必要が与えられていったということは本当だったのだと。

「神様はいるのかしら、いないのかしら、祝福と言ってもどうかしら」。そう思う方がいるかもしれません。しかし、そんな時、私たちは問われるのです「あなたは本当に神様に従っていますか？本当に神の国と神の義をまず第一に求めていますか？」あのやもめは、子供と食べるはずだった最後の食事をエリヤに分け与えたのです。もし、それを惜しんでいたなら、この驚くべきことを目の当たりにすることはなかったでしょう。彼女自身が言っているように、最後の食事をして、この親子は餓死していたことでしょう。しかし、神をまず第一にして従った時に、その時に思いもしなかった、想像もしなかった神のみ業を見ることになったのです。

 皆さん、今日は母の日です。日々、家族のために子供達のために労を惜しまない、お母さん達に対して、私は何も言う言葉のないものです。しかし、あえて母の日、一言だけお母さん達へエールを送りたいと思います。それは、お母さん達がどんな能力があるとか、どんなものを持っているかということは、あまり大きな問題ではないということです。神を畏れ、神を信頼して、神に従って生きているか否か、それこそが最も大事なことなのです。それこそが母が子に残すことができる最大の財産であり、そう生きる時に、この厳しい時代であっても、私たちは神様の驚くべきみわざと祝福を垣間見ることができるのです。

 そして、それはお母さんだけではない、全て神にあって造られし私たち全ての人がそうです。神は既に決して変わることのない「イエス・キリスト」と「聖霊」を送ってくださっています。今もそう、キリストの臨在と聖霊の導きが私たちには既にあるのです。私たちがこのお方を信じ、従っていく時に、私たちはあのやもめ親子に働かれた主の奇しいみわざを見るようになるのです。お祈りしましょう。

 

Words to Mother on Mother’s Day

 Today is a Mother’s Day. Every one of us has a mother who brought us to this world. Some mother might be already gone to heaven. Some of you are mothers yourself. The Bible also talks about many mothers.

 Under the current study series, we have been studying one book of the Old Testament each week. Last week, we studied Second Kings, and learned that God has been talking to us throughout the history and that God tried many times to talk to people of Israel in turmoil through prophets. We did not have time to talk about each individual prophet because of limited time we have. Today, on this Mother’s Day, however, I would like to talk about one prophet and one mother from the book of Kings.

 This woman, mentioned in the Bible in relation to the Prophet Elijah was a window with one son. The Bible never mentioned her by name. She is simply referred to as a window in Zarephath. Let me explain the background of this story.

 Last week, I mentioned that there were 19 kings in the northern kingdom of Israel and all 19 were evil kings. The worst among these evil kings was a king by the name of Ahab. One reason why Ahab was considered to have done more evil in the eyes of the Lord than other kings was the wife of Ahab, named Jezebel.

 Jezebel was a fervent follower of a pagan god of Baal. She tried to make Baal-worshipping the national religion of Israel over any other religions in the country. And this king Ahab could not control his wife Jezebel.

 At that time, there was a prophet by the name of Elijah. He was an ardent follower of God and stood up openly against Ahab and Jezebel.

 When many people of Israel were praying to Baal for bountiful harvest, Elijah declared, “As the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, whom I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years except at my word.” (1 Kings 17:1) Elijah was warning people not to worship Baal. And, rather than bountiful harvest, famine and hunger prevailed over the nation of Israel for the next 3 years and a half. Even Elijah could not find food. So, God told Elijah to go to Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan. There, Elijah was fed by ravens which brought bread and meat every day. He drank water from the brook. Eventually, however, the brook in Kerith Ravine dried up also.

 Then, God told Elijah in Chapter 17, Verses 8-9: “Go at once to Zarephath of Sidon and stay there. I have commanded a widow in that place to supply you with food.”

 This “Zarephath of Sidon” was a region where Phoenician people lived, a land foreign to Israelite people with different culture and religion. The Bible does not provide much information about this window. She could be a Phoenician. It is more likely that her deceased husband was a Phoenician and she was an Israelite since she could talk freely with Elijah and helped him hide in her house.

Perhaps it was a case of an international marriage, and she was living in a foreign land. She later gave birth to a son. But her husband passed away and she raised her son by herself. Perhaps these were the circumstances she was in.

 On top of that, this window and her son had a hard time because of famine. Their life was stretched to its limit. At this time, they only had a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug.  Clearly, she was in no position to offer anything to help others. God did not send Elijah to a house of a rich man with plenty of food to eat. No, God told him to go to a widow barely trying to find food to hang on.

 If we look at this book of Kings carefully, it said that King Ahab “married Jezebel daughter of Ethbaal king of the Sidonians, …” (1 Kings Chapter 16, Verse 31) In other words, this evil wife Jezebel of King Ahab was originally a daughter of a king of Sidon. It means that God directed Elijah to go to a widow living in a home country of Jezebel who worshipped Baal. God had told Elijah to go to the heart of this nation of a pagan religion. Ordinarily, we expect God to tell us to stay clear of the enemy territory. But, God sometimes tells us to do the unexpected.

 When Elijah came to the town of Zerephath, a widow was there as God had told him, and she was gathering sticks at the town gate. He called to her and asked, “Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink?”  A jar of water must have been very precious when even the rivers were drying up from drought.

 But, just when she was going to get the water for Elijah, he called, “And bring me, please, a piece of bread.” (1 Kings 17:11) To this, the widow replied: “As surely as the LORD your God lives, I don’t have any bread—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it—and die.” 

 We can almost picture the hardship this widow and her son were going through. To them, Elijah said: “Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small cake of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the LORD gives rain on the land.’”

 When she heard these words, she could have shouted back: “How selfish and inconsiderate of you. We barely have anything to eat. And you ask us to give up even that!!” Now, we also have to remember that Elijah was in the home country of Jezebel. This widow was being asked to hide this wanted man. Hiding the enemy of the wife of the king was unthinkable. It could have put the life of widow and her son at risk. Nevertheless, verse 15 says this window did as Elijah had told her to do. And, this changed the life of the window and son.

 This window had only few stick, a left over flour, and little bit of oil. That was all she had. What can we expect from this meager possession? Can anything new happen?  “You tell me that the jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the LORD gives rain on the land. But how could that be??” That is a normal response. But, when she took her step in faith, an amazing world opened up to her. What Elijah had told this poor widow did indeed happen. She thought that she was at the end of flour and oil supply. But, she and her son never ran out of the flour and the oil.

 What does this mean to us then? Does that mean that we should run out after the service to a shopping center and buy up everything in sight, expecting that our bank balance would never run dry? Am I challenging you to test your faith in that way? No, do not test your Lord that way. We still have to pay the bills. Giving us anything we want is not high in the priority list of God. What then is the message of this scripture reading this morning?

 This story about Elijah and the widow and her son took place in the days of the Old Testament. We live in the days of the New Testament. This “bread” in the Old Testament means “Jesus Christ” in the New Testament now.

 Jesus Christ said in John 6:35,  “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.”

 The word “oil” means the “Holy Spirit” to us. In Matthew Chapter 25, Jesus spoke about a parable of “10 virgins going out to meet the bridegroom.” Of these, five of the virgins were wise and took spare oil in jars for their lamp. But other 5 who were foolish did not prepare spare oil. What is the significance of this oil? This oil means the Holy Spirit poured to us.

 These two, namely, “Jesus Christ” and the “Holy Spirit”, will never run dry in our time, either. This is an important message. In other words, as long as these two are never exhausted, our need in life is always provided to us. This is because anything we need is provided to us through this Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

 Our life is not easy. This is a harsh world to live in. It is not easy to make a living. I can speak from my own experience. Even a minster like me is troubled with a news that I heard earlier when I tuck my children in bed and watch them fall asleep. The news said that a child, goes to a college after high school, it would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. I have three children. It seems impossible to send them to college with my income.

 But, in such a time, I hear the words of the Lord saying: “God of Elijah is still alive today.” I did not learn these words from the Bible. These were words my mother told me again and again when I was a child. Perhaps this is not unique to my personal experience. I am sure most of the children of ministers in Japan have heard the same expression as they grew up. We grew up hearing expressions like: “God of Elijah is with us,” or “Raven of Elijah will come to us,” or “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided”.

 Let me talk about my own wife. She grew up as the first daughter of 7 siblings. My parents-in-law have been ministering in Kyushu district and are still serving the Lord there. In USA, people are familiar with churches and ministers. But, my parents in law live in a nation whose Christians are the minority of less than one percent. One day, when I was in high school and riding a motor bike, a police stopped me and questioned me. The police also asked what my parents do for living. When I said “BOKUSHI” (meaning a “minister” in Japanese), the police said, “So, your father is in boxing?” Very few people in Japan even know the word “a minister”.

 Naturally, 7 siblings in my wife’s family had no money for children’s education. But, somehow, by delivering newspapers, scholarship and student loans, all of her siblings managed to go to school of their choice. This is amazing. There was no money for education. And yet, it was provided.

 Rev. Michio Okawa is a minister in our Holiness church group. He had served this Japanese speaking congregation in San Diego for many years. He also grew up as a child of a minister. His younger brother wrote a book on his personal experience of growing up in a church, called “A surprising family of poverty.”

 He hated the extreme poverty. He even wanted to burn the church down to stop his father from ministering. When he could not win over his father, he burned down the only clothing his mother had, he pulled on her hair, kicked her, and stomped on her. Etc. Etc.

 But his mother was patient and used to tell him that, “You are not yourself now. But, you will someday serve the Lord, I know.” He says such kind words and her attitude gave lasting impression to him, the rebellious son.  (At that time, this mother did now know that this son would later become the minister of the largest church in Japan.)

 This mother did not complain or moan even in the midst of poverty. And, she always told her children that:  “the God of Elijah is alive with us.” Children could not see such God of Elijah anywhere around them. Thy used to rebel saying: “There is no God.” But, these words of his mother were instilled in the heart of her son that “if you seek the Kingdom of God and Righteousness of God, God will surely provide us with what we need.”  His mother always thanked God even when they ran out of rice to eat. He was amazed to find a large sack of rice placed in front of their house by some unknown person. He said he learned about the presence of God first hand from such experience.

 Was this Rev. Okura telling a lie? Is the God of Elijah a fiction? I am a minister, who grew up under a window, a faithful Christian minister. So, I can say with conviction: God is alive with us now. And it was true that the poor widow was provided with daily needs when she trusted in God and obeyed the Lord. It was all true, I can say.

 Some of you might ask: “What is this blessing? Does God really take care of our daily needs?” But more important question we must ask is: “Are we seeking the Kingdom and the Righteousness of God above all else? Are we listening to God?” That widow gave Elijah the last remaining food that she was to eat with her son. If she did not do so, she would have never seen this amazing development afterwards. As she said herself, she expected to die from hunger with her son. When she set God as her top priority, however, she saw the unexpected and unimaginable works of God.

 Today is the Mother’s Day. Our mothers do not hesitate even for a second to do everything for children. What can I say to them? But, I would like to say one thing to mothers this morning. And that is, it is not important how capable or gifted the mothers are. That is not the most important matter. The most important matter is whether or not mothers fear God, trust God, and obey God. This is the most important asset that the mother can bestow on her children. When mothers live trusting in God, we can all begin to see amazing work and blessings even in the hardest moments of life.

 This is not limited to mothers. This is important to every one of us who were created by God. God has sent us never-changing “Jesus Christ” and the “Holy Spirit”. Yes, even today, Christ is with us and the Holy Spirit is providing us guidance. If we believe in Him, and obey and follow Him, we will see the same amazing works that this widow and he son observed.

１）列王記上１７章を読みましょう。神様は雨のない飢饉の間、カラスややもめを通してエリヤを養いました。神様は時に私達の思いもつかない方法で私達を助けてくださいます。あなたはそのような経験をしたことがありますか。

 

 

２）上記のやもめはシドンに属するザレパテに住んでいました。そこはエリヤが命懸けで戦っていたイゼベルの出身地でその支配が及んでいる場所でした。すなわち、神様はエリヤに敵の只中に留まるように告げたのです。あなたはこのような思いがけない所に導かれ、後になってその意味が分かったことがありますか。

 

 

 ３）雨が降らなく窮していたやもめ親子がエリヤの言葉に従った時にどのようなことが起こりましたか。このこと出来事は私達にどんなメッセージを語りかけてきますか。

 

 

４）新約の時代の光で「パン」と「油」を見ると、そこにはどんな意味がありますか。ヨハネ６章３５節、マタイ２５章から「パン」と「油」は何を意味していますか。今日、私達はどのようにしてこの「パン」と「油」を日毎にいただくことができるのでしょうか。

 

 

 ５）あなたは今日もエリヤの神は生き、あなたの日々の生活に深く関わっていてくださることを信じますか。主イエス・キリストにあって「かめの粉は尽きず、つぼの油はなくならない」と信じますか
