イスラエルにはゴラン高原という高原があります。そこは第三次中東戦争に勝利をしたイスラエルが現在、占領下に置いている土地で、イスラエル、シリア、レバノン、ヨルダンの国境に接しています。現在も国連が注意深くこの高原を見守っており、この土地から緊張が除かれることはありません。二週間ほど前にもこのゴラン高原にシリアからの攻撃がありイスラエル兵士四名が負傷し、イスラエル軍はすぐにシリアを空爆しています。数年前、この高原をわたしも尋ねましたが、日本やアメリカに暮らす者として驚いたのは行く先々に「地雷に注意」という看板が立っていたということです。
なぜイスラエルはこの土地を死守し、近隣諸国は隙さえあればこの土地を奪取しようとしているのかと言いますと、ゴラン高原自体は決して広い土地ではないのですが、高原というようにそこは高い土地で、そこにはイスラエル最高峰のヘルモン山があり（この山はイエス様の姿がペテロ、ヤコブ、ヨハネの前で変貌した山として言い伝えられています）、そのヘルモン山の雪解け水と、地中から流れる水源が低地のガリラヤ湖に流れ、降水量が極めて少ないイスラエルが生きながらえるには絶対に失ってはならない土地だからです。
ということはイスラエルに敵対する国にとってはこのイスラエルの水源であるゴラン高原を奪取することは、すなわちイスラエルを制圧するということになるのです。 同じようにとめどもなく水のように私達の口から出て来る言葉の水源は私達の心です。この水源をいかようにするのか、それが言葉を制する勘所であり、ゴラン高原奪取がイスラエルの生死に関わるように、先の御言葉に「死と生とは舌に支配される」とありましたように、私達の心を守ることは、私達の実際の生死、および私達の霊的な生死にも関わることなのです。さて、それでは私達の心はどのように制することができるのでしょうか。

私達の言葉を制するもの

先週は怒りについて箴言よりお話しました。その時にソロモンは「怒り」という人間の感情について何度も箴言に記しているということをお話しました。「怒り」は私達に身近なものであり、怒りが私達に与える影響というものをソロモンは良く知っているからです。そして今日は「私達が話す言葉」についてお話しします。箴言を読みますとこの言葉に対する教訓がまさしくあちこちに数多く出てきます。「私達の怒り」と共に「私達の言葉」も今も昔も変わらず私達にとってとても身近なものだからです。というよりも言葉はまさしくいつも私達と共にあるものだからです。ソロモンは言葉についてこう書きました。
『19言葉が多ければ、とがを免れない、自分のくちびるを制する者は知恵がある』（箴言１０章１９節）。
「言葉が多ければとが（罪）を免れない」とはなんとも深い言葉です。この言葉に呼応するかのようにソロモンはこのようなことも書きました。『27言葉を少なくする者は知識のある者、心の冷静な人はさとき人である。28愚かな者も黙っているときは、知恵ある者と思われ、そのくちびるを閉じている時は、さとき者と思われる』（箴言１７章２７節－２８節）。
もし「あの人は賢い人に違いない」と思われたい方がいましたら、その方法がここには記されています。それはとてもシンプルです。そうです、「黙っていなさい」ということです。黙って人の話を聞き、ところどころ大きくうなづいたりしてみてください。そんなあなたを見て人は「この人は得たいが知れない。きっと賢い人なのだろう」と思います。
このことは同時に、私達は誰しも口を開けば常にとんでもないことを言ってしまうものだということを示しています。この箴言を読みますとすぐに思い起こす言葉がイエス様の弟であったヤコブが書き記したヤコブ書の言葉です。『1わたしの兄弟たちよ。あなたがたのうち多くの者は、教師にならないがよい。わたしたち教師が、他の人たちよりも、もっときびしいさばきを受けることが、よくわかっているからである』（ヤコブ３章１節）。
なぜヤコブは「教師にならないほうがいい」と言っているのでしょうか。なぜなら教師は他の人たちよりももっと厳しい裁きを受けることが、よく分かっているからだというのです。なぜ教師はもっと厳しい裁きを受けるのでしょうか。その理由がこの言葉の後にこう続いています『2わたしたちは皆、多くのあやまちを犯すものである。もし、言葉の上であやまちのない人があれば、そういう人は、全身をも制御することのできる完全な人である』（ヤコブ３章２節）。
教師とは教える師と書くように、多くの教える機会をもつ人達です。そして、その教えの多くは言葉を通してなされます。ゆえにその出ていく言葉の数だけ、言葉による過ちにも陥りやすいのです。これは運転時間の長い人が必然的に交通事故に遭う確率が高くなるということと同じです。言葉を語れば語るほどに、過ちも増えてしまう、それほどに私達が言葉を制することは困難なことなのです。
ヤコブは大胆にこんなことを断言しています『7あらゆる種類の獣、鳥、這うもの、海の生物は、すべて人類に制せられるし、また制せられてきた。しかし舌を制しうる人は、一人もいない』と（ヤコブ３章７節、８節）。確かに人はあらゆる種類の獣、鳥、這うもの、海の生物を制してき、人は密林を開拓し、そこに道を備えたり、砂漠に街を建設してきました。しかし、諸々の細菌を制し、地球の裏側の密林に幹線道路を造ろうと、海の真ん中に国際空港を建てようと、人はいつも自分と共にある唇を制することはできないというのです。
ソロモンの父、ダビデも切実に言っております。『主よ、わが口に門守を置いて、わがくちびるの戸を守ってください』（詩篇１４１篇３節）。聖書中、最も偉大な預言者イザヤは宮において神様の聖なる臨在に包まれた時に、恐れおののいて『わざわいなるかな、わたしは滅びるばかりだ。わたしは汚れたくちびるの者で、汚れたくちびるの民の中に住む者であるのに、わたしの目が万軍の主なる王を見たのだから』と言いました（イザヤ６章５節）。彼が神の臨在の前に立った時に、己の心にまず示されたことは自分の唇から発せられる言葉であったということ、まさしく自分は滅びるばかり、汚れたくちびるの自分は汚れたくちびるの民の中に生きているのだと神の前に恐れおののくのです。
ソロモンは書きました『20人は自分の言葉の結ぶ実によって、満ち足り、そのくちびるの産物によって自ら飽きる。21死と生とは舌に支配される、これを愛する者はその実を食べる』（箴言１８章２０節－２１節）。
ここには私達には自分の言葉の結ぶ実があると書かれています。言葉は結実するというのです。すなわち、私達が何を語るかということによって私達の毎日が決まり、ひいては日々の集大成である人生が決まっていくということです。そう考えますのなら、私達の生と死は私達の発する言葉によって支配されているといえるのです。
それでは私達はこの言葉をどのように制することができるのでしょうか。「言葉を制する」ということはどういうことなのでしょうか。イエス・キリストはかつてこう語られました「口にはいってくるものは、みな腹の中にはいり、そして、外に出て行くことを知らないのか。しかし、口から出て行くものは、心の中から出てくるのであって、それが人を汚すのである」（マタイ１５章１７節）。
このイエス様の言葉を読み、あらためて私達の口から出て来る言葉の出所について考えるならば「言葉を制する」ということはすなわち「心を制すること」なのだということが分かります。イエス様が「口から出て行くものは、心の中から出て来る」と言っているからです。それではどうしたら心を制することができるのでしょうか。
私達はいつも様々なものを内に取り入れています。特にこの情報社会、黙っていてもあらゆるものが入ってきます。そして、それらが私達の心に入ってきたその時点では、まだそれらはまだ何もしていません。しかし、それらに私達の心が反応しますと私達は何を言い出すか分かりません。イエス・キリストは言われました『34おおよそ、心からあふれることを、口が語るものである』（マタイ１２章３４）。
「あふれ出る」ということから言葉を水にたとえますのなら、心は私達の水源です。私達が語る言葉はその水源から湧き出てきたものです。ですから言葉を制するということは、すなわちその水源を制するということです。

イスラエルの民、すなわちユダヤ人は先祖から数千年来引き継いでいるいくつかの祭をもち、今日もそれを大切にしている人達ですが、その祭の一つに仮庵の祭というのがあります。仮庵の祭とはイスラエルの民がエジプトを脱出して荒野での４０年もの厳しい生活を送った時、彼らを常に養い守ってくださった神様に感謝をする祭りで、イエス様の時代には祭りの期間中、エルサレム市内のシロアムの池から水を汲んで、それを黄金の容器に入れて神殿に運び、朝晩二回行われる犠牲の供え物と共にその水が祭壇に注がれました。
その仮庵の祭の終わりの日にイエス様が叫ばれたことがヨハネによる福音書には記録されています。37祭の終りの大事な日に、イエスは立って、叫んで言われた、「だれでもかわく者は、わたしのところにきて飲むがよい。38わたしを信じる者は、聖書に書いてあるとおり、その腹から生ける水が川となって流れ出るであろう」（ヨハネ７章３７節－３８節）。
イエス様は立ち上がって、叫んで言われました。渇く者はわたしの元に来なさいと。そして、そうするのなら聖書に書いてあるとおり、その腹から生ける水が川となって流れ出ると言われ、それは「聖書に書いてあるとおりに」そうなると言われました。「聖書に書いてあるように」と言うからには、どこにそれが書かれているのでしょうか。それは旧約聖書、預言者エゼキエルの預言です（４７章１節－１２節）。エゼキエルはイエス様より約６００年前を生きた預言者です。彼はエゼキエル書の中にこう書いています。
「この水は東の境に流れて行き、アラバに落ち下り、その水が、よどんだ海にはいると、それは清くなる。9おおよそこの川の流れる所では、もろもろの動く生き物が皆生き、また、はなはだ多くの魚がいる。これはその水がはいると、海の水を清くするためである。この川の流れる所では、すべてのものが生きている」（エゼキエル４７章８節、９節）
イスラエルでよどんだ海とは何でしょうか。一つしかありません。そうです、死海です。死海は塩分濃度が高くて、その名の通り、そこは死の海で魚は住んでいないとされています。しかし、そこに真水が流れ込むのなら、そこは魚の生きるところとなるというのです。しかも、その魚の数はおびただしいのです。この川の流れ入るところでは、すべてのものが生きているというのです。
これを今日、見ております「水源なる心」とそこから「湧き出る水」ということで考えますと、まさしく水源なる水が死の海に注ぎ込まれるのなら、それが命を拒むような塩水であっても、そこには魚が生きるようになる、すべてのものが生きるようになるというのです。
イエス様は仮庵の祭の終わりの日、その期間中、シロアムの池から神殿まで、器に汲んだ水をこぼさない様に運ぶ者達の姿をみて、私があなたたちの心に湧き起こす水源はそんなものではない、いちいち容器に入れて運び、それを降りかけたとしてもすぐに乾いてしまうようなものではないというのです。誰でも心渇くものがわたしのもとにきて、わたしが与える命の水を飲むのなら、私達が知っているあの死の海に命が取り戻されるような、その命の水が私達の心から湧き出るであろうというのです。
そして、その直後にこれらのイエスの言動を記録したヨハネはこのイエス様の言葉はどういうことなのか、このような注釈をつけ加えました『これは、イエスを信じる人々が受けようとしている御霊をさして言われたのである。すなわち、イエスはまだ栄光を受けておられなかったので、御霊がまだ下っていなかったのである』（ヨハネ７章３９節）。
私達の言葉の出所を聖霊の支配のもとに置く時に、すなわち私達が聖霊に満たされるのなら、その時に私達は己が心を制し、それを命の水わく泉とし、それがその口から言葉となって出ていく故に、その言葉を制することができるようになるのです。あれやこれやと注意深く、私達の話す言葉を取り繕うことはできるかもしれませんが、それはやがて破れ、ボロが出てきます。しかし、心の泉を聖霊様によって満たしていただくのです。その時にたとえ私達の言葉が向かう先が死の海であっても、私達の泉から話される言葉が聖霊の支配によって生み出されるものであるのなら、そこには新しい命が生まれ、その言葉を聞く者達が生きることができるというのです。
人々が天に近づいて神のごとくになろうとしてバベルの塔を建てあげようとしていた時、神様はその塔を打ちこわし、何をしましたか。彼らの言葉を乱したのです。しかし、それから後、あのエルサレムの二階座敷でイエスの弟子達が聖霊を受けた時、何が起きましたか、舌のような聖霊が彼ら一人一人の上に臨み、彼らにどんな変化が起きましたか。彼らは様々な言葉で語りだしたのです。神の力が、神の霊が私達のうちに下る時に起きる最大の変化は私達の言葉の変化なのです。
福音書に記録されている、すなわち聖霊をまだ受けていない時のイエス様の弟子達の言葉とこの聖霊を受けた後の弟子達の姿が書かれている時使徒行伝、パウロ書簡、ペテロやヨハネの手紙に記録されている彼らの姿には大きな違いがあります。彼らは変わりました。激変しました。その変化が最も顕著にあらわれたのは何ですか。彼らの「言葉」です。なぜなら聖霊が彼らの心を命の泉と変え、その泉からあふれ出て来る者が彼らの言葉となったからです。そして、彼らの言葉が変化する時に、それが彼らの人格を変え、その人格が変わりますと、今度は彼らの人生が変わり、それだけではない、その彼らの言葉を聞く者達の人生が変わったのです。
ヨハネによる福音書にはイエス様がサマリアに住む女と出会った時のことが書かれていますね。かつて五人の夫をもち、今はまた別の男と暮らしている女性です。詳細を聖書は記しています。「この人と」、「この人こそ」、「この人だけは」、「この人には」、「この人なら」と生きてきた女性です。しかし、何かしらの理由でその全ての期待と希望が破れ、まさしく破れかぶれ、その時は「とりあえずこの人と」というような状況に生きている女性です。
私達はいかがですか。かつては「あれか、これか」とそれなりに期待と希望をもって生きてきたけど、もう今の自分にはそのようなものはない。「まぁ、とりあえず」と日々を諦めと共に生きていませんか。このサマリアの女の心を潤すものはなく、その心は枯れ果てて、毎日を惰性と後悔で生きていました。この女性にイエス様はスカルの井戸辺で言われたのです。
13「この水を飲む者はだれでも、またかわくであろう。14しかし、わたしが与える水を飲む者は、いつまでも、かわくことがないばかりか、わたしが与える水は、その人のうちで泉となり、永遠の命に至る水が、わきあがるであろう」（ヨハネ４章１３節、１４節）。
イエス様はこの女の心を全てお見通しでした。その彼女の姿とその言葉の節々に出て来る彼女の心を見たイエス様はピタッと彼女の問題を言い当てました。あなたはこれまで乾ききった日々を送ってきたことだろう。一生懸命にその心に水を注いでくれる人を捜し求めてきたのだろう。でも、あなたがそれをこれからも続けていくのなら一時、その渇きは癒されたとしても、また渇く、必ず渇く。しかし、わたしが与える水はを飲む者は、いつまでも渇くことがない、なぜならその水は今日、あなたがこの井戸に汲みに来て、また明日になると汲みにきてというような水なのではなく、そのあなたの心の内にある泉から湧き上がる命の水なのだから。
四月に入りますと私達は受難週を迎え、そしてイースターを迎えます。イエス様は十字架の上で七つの言葉を話しました。とてつもない痛みがともなう状況です。十字架刑の恐ろしさはどこにあるかといいますと、人をなかなか早く死なせないというところにあります。十字架刑を受ける者はその手、および足の甲が十字架の上に釘づけにされます。その痛みは言うまでもなく極限的なもので、しかしながらその打たれた体の部位はすぐに致命的になる場所ではありませんので、その痛みと苦しみと共に普通は数日、人は生きます。
言うまでもありません、その様は「この苦しみが続いて最終的に死にいたるのなら、今、心臓を一刺しにして殺してくれ」と誰もが言うような状態です。しかし、不思議なことにイエス様は６時間ほどで亡くなったと聖書は記しています。その理由について十字架刑の前の拷問があまりにも過酷だったからだろうとか、色々なことが言われます。その中である人達はイエス様が受けた痛みと苦しみは肉体的なことだけではなくて、人類の罪を、すなわち私の罪も皆さんの罪もその一身に負ったところによる筆舌尽くし難い苦しみだったゆえに、その命はすぐに失われたのだろうと言われる方がいますが、私もそう思います。
イエスの生涯を描写した映画が今も上映されており、この十字架の場面が出てきます。まさしく血まみれになっているイエス・キリストの姿です。彼と同じように肉体の痛みを知っている私達はそのシーンから目をそむけたくなります。あまりにもイエス様の肉体が痛々しいからです。しかし、イエス様の本当の痛みはその肉体の痛み以外のところにあったに違いないのです。
その時、イエス様の両隣には自らが犯した罪により十字架にかけられていた二人の犯罪人がいました。その一人がイエス様に向かってこう言いました「お前はメシアだろう。自分も俺たちも救ってみろ」とののしりました。もう一人の犯罪人はこう言いました「お前は神をおそれないのか。俺たちは自分のやったことに対する報いを受けているのだからそれは当然だけれど、この方は何も悪いことをしていない」（ルカ２３章４０節－４１節）。イエス様が何も悪いことをした者ではないということはイエスと同じように十字架にかけられていた犯罪人にも明らかなことだったのです。
先週、私達はヨナの怒りを見ました。彼は自分の思い通りにならないことに対して「怒りのあまり死にそうだ」と言いました。このヨナの気持ちとその言葉を思いめぐらしていた時、もしイエス様が十字架上でその不憫な、納得のいかない、不正な、間違った刑に対して「私は怒りのあまり死にそうだ！」と言われても私はその怒りが十分に理解できると思いました。なぜなら、それは怒って当然なことだからです。それが正当だからです。しかし、イエス様の口から出た言葉は「父よ、彼らをおゆるしください。彼らは何をしているのか分からずにいるのです」というものでした。
自分を激しく鞭打ち、十字架につけ、裏切り、嘲笑する人達を眼下に見つつ、イエス様は彼らは何も分からずにこのことしているのだから、父なる神よ、彼らをゆるしていただけないだろうかと言われたのです。自分をイエス様と同じ状況に置いてみればすぐに分かることです。言うまでもありませんでしょう、血まみれになって、既に激しい拷問を受け、乾ききったその口から言われたこのイエス様の言葉は人間の本能、人間の性質というものを考えたらありえない言葉であったということを。
そして、私達は気がつくのです。この言葉は自分のことを言っているのだと。神が存在し、キリストがこの地でこのように私の罪のために、その身代わりのために十字架にかけられた、そのことを知らずに、否、知っていながらも、あいも変わらず自分の好き勝手なことばかりを言って、やって生きている。もし、そうであるのなら、私も皆さんもイエス様の目には「何をしているのか分からない」人間なのです。その私達に対してキリストはは「彼らを赦してあげてください」と祈られたのです。そのキリストの心の泉から、人類史上、最悪の瞬間に、この命の言葉が乾ききったイエス様の口から溢れ出たのです。
今、お話ししましたようにこの命の言葉があなたの心に触れるのなら、「へぇー、イエス・キリストはそんなことをしたんだ、そんなことを言っていたんだ」と聞いていたあの約束の言葉が私達の心の内に成就するのです。
『わたしを信じる者は、聖書に書いてあるとおり、その腹から生ける水が川となって流れ出るであろう」（ヨハネ７章３８節）
『しかし、わたしが与える水を飲む者は、いつまでも、かわくことがないばかりか、わたしが与える水は、その人のうちで泉となり、永遠の命に至る水が、わきあがるであろう」（ヨハネ４章１３節、１４節）
そして、さらに私達は気がつくことでしょう。あのエゼキエルの預言もその時に同時に成就するのだということを。「この水は東の境に流れて行き、アラバに落ち下り、その水が、よどんだ海にはいると、それは清くなる。9おおよそこの川の流れる所では、もろもろの動く生き物が皆生き、また、はなはだ多くの魚がいる。

言葉を制することは心を制すること。私達の心にキリストが与えてくださる命の泉は湧いているでしょうか。お祈りしましょう。
The prudent hold their tongues

Last week we studied what the Proverbs said about anger. Solomon mentioned this human feeling, anger, many times in the Proverbs. Solomon also warned us that, if we are not careful, anger could adversely impact our life. Today, I would like to talk about “words we speak”. Proverbs is full of advices on the importance of words we speak. This is because our words, as our anger, are integral part of human life from time immemorial. Words are with us in our life all the time. About words, Solomon said:
”Sin is not ended by multiplying words, but the prudent hold their tongues.” (Proverbs 10:19)
Multiplying words would not exonerate us from our sins. Solomon echoed this sentiment when he said: “The one who has knowledge uses words with restraint, and whoever has understanding is even-tempered. Even fools are thought wise if they keep silent, and discerning if they hold their tongues.” (Proverbs 17:27-28)
If you want to pretend that you are wise, this section says that there is a very simple trick to make people think that you are wise. And, that is for you to keep silent. Listen calmly to others, and nod occasionally to indicate you understand. People would think that you are a very knowledgeable and wise individual.
The flip side of this statement is that we must be very careful when we speak lest we make fools of ourselves. This section in the Proverbs reminds us words in the Book of James, a disciple of Jesus. ”Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.” (James 3:1)
Why did James say that we should not become teachers? He said that is because teachers are judged more strictly by others. But, why are teachers judged more strictly? James explains that by saying: “We all stumble in many ways. Anyone who is never at fault in what they say is perfect, able to keep their whole body in check.” (James 3:2)
Teachers are supposed to teach others. It is their profession. And such teachings are done through words they speak. That is why chances are great that teachers stumble on their own words. This is same as saying that people who drive longer hours would be more likely to encounter traffic accidents. The more words we utter, the greater are chances that we make mistakes. It is not easy to control words.
James made this bold statement: “All kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures are being tamed and have been tamed by mankind, 8 but no human being can tame the tongue.” (James 3:7-8) James said that mankind has managed to control over all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles and sea creatures. We have cleared jungle to make roads, and managed to build cities in the middle of deserts. But, even if we can control diseases, build super highways through remote jungles, and create an airport in the ocean, James said we cannot control our tongues.
David, father of Solomon, said: ”Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips.” (Psalm 141:3) The greatest prophets in the Bible, Isaiah, said when he was placed face to face with God: “Woe to me! I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.” (Isaiah 6:5) He was scared when he faced God because he realized that his words out of his lips are unclean, and that he lived among people of unclean lips. He was afraid he would be condemned for that reason.
Solomon said: “From the fruit of their mouth a person’s stomach is filled; with the harvest of their lips they are satisfied. The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” (Proverbs 18:20-21)
This says that our words produce fruits. Our words produce tangible results. Our words would influence our daily life, and our words would ultimately shape the way we live our life on this earth. If that is true, we can say that our life and death are controlled by words we speak.
How, then, can we control words we speak? What does it mean to control words? Jesus once said: “Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them.” (Matthew 15:17-18)
When we contemplate what Jesus said here and think about the source of words we utter, we realize that the only way we can control words is first to control our heart. Jesus said “what come out of a mouth come from the heart.” Then, how can we control our heart?
We take in all kinds of things in our daily life. This is an information age. So many things come into us even if we do not seek them out. When they reach our heart, they do not do anything yet to us at that point. But, it is a different story when we react to these stimuli with words. Jesus said: ”The mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” (Matthew 12:34)
The heart overflows and words come out. Our heart is like a fountain, a water source. Words we speak come out from that water source. So, in order to control our words we must control the water source in our heart.
Golan Heights is an area in Israel. Golan Heights area was taken by Israel during the third Middle East War. It is under Israeli rule and borders with Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan. Even today, United Nations keeps careful watch over this Golan Heights, and it is under a lot of tension. About two weeks ago, Syria attacked this Golan Heights. Four of the Israeli soldiers were injured and Israeli army retaliated by bombing Syria. Several years ago, I visited this Golan Heights. What surprised me was that I could see so many signs “Warning: Land Mine Area.” They were everywhere. I’ve never seen such scene in Japan or in USA.
Golan Heights is not a big area. Why does Israel protect this area at all costs, and why do neighboring nations try to capture this area? Mount Hermon, the highest point of Israel, is located here. (Mount Hermon is known as the mountain where Jesus transformed in front of Peter, James, and John.) The water from melted snow and underground water from this Golan Heights flow into Sea of Galilee, which provides vital water source to the country of Israel which otherwise gets very little rain. So, for the enemy of the Israel, controlling the Golan Heights and the water source of Israel means controlling Israel.
Similarly, the source of words flowing out from our mouth is our heart. It is critical that we control this water source because it is a key to controlling our words. Controlling Golan Heights is a life-and-death challenge for Israel. Similarly, controlling our heart is a life-and-death matter in controlling life and death, both physical and spiritual. How, then, can we control our heart?
People of Israel, namely Jewish people, inherited many festivals handed down over thousands of year from ancestors. One of such festivals is called a Feast of Tabernacles. The Feast of Tabernacles is a festival that offers thanks to God who protected the people of Israel for 40 years after Egypt in the wilderness. To celebrate this Feast, water was extracted from the Pool of Siloam in Jerusalem. This water was carried in a gold container to the Temple, and was poured on the altar together with sacrificial offering twice a day.
On the last day of the festival, Jesus delivered a message in a loud voice. This I recorded in John: 37 On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” (John 7:37-38)
Jesus stood up and shouted: “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me.” And, that, if people did so, rivers of living water would flow from within them as the Scripture has said. Where can we find this scripture in the Bible? This is found in the prophesy of Ezekiel in the Old Testament. Ezekiel lived around 600 years before Jesus. The book of Ezekiel says:
“This water flows toward the eastern region and goes down into the Arabah, where it enters the Dead Sea. When it empties into the sea, the salty water there becomes fresh. 9 Swarms of living creatures will live wherever the river flows. There will be large numbers of fish, because this water flows there and makes the salt water fresh; so where the river flows everything will live.” (Ezekiel 47:8-9)
It mentions the Dead Sea which is located in Israel. This Dead Sea is famous for its high salt content. It is said that fish cannot live in this Dead Sea. But, this scripture says, fish can live in it when fresh water flows into this Dead Sea. Plenty of fish can live there where the fresh water flows in. Many living creatures can live because of this.
So, we learned this morning that our heart is our water source, and water wells up from our heart. This scripture tells us that fish can live in Dead Sea when that fresh water from the water source pours into the Dead Sea.
Jesus was observing people carrying water carefully from the Pool of Siloam to the temple. Jesus said that the living water that pours out of our heart is not like that. There is no need to carry the water in a container to places, and it does not dry up easily even when it is poured out. Jesus told people to come to Jesus and drink the water of life that Jesus gives us. He said this living water will restore our life and living water will begin to pour out from our heart.
John, who recorded these words of Jesus, also added the following statement explaining the meaning of what Jesus said. ”By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.” (John 7:39)
When we surrender the source of our words to the Holy Spirit, namely when we are filled with the Holy Spirit, our heart will be made a fountain of living water. That is how we can control our words. Our attempts to dress up our words may work some of the time. But, such efforts will fail eventually. But, let the fountain of living water in heart be filled with the Holy Spirit. Then, even if we were destined to live in the Dead Sea, if the words from our heart are controlled by the Holy Spirit, a new life will spring up within us, and the people who hear our words will also find new life.
When people tried to build the Tower of Babel to elevate them to the height of God, God destroyed the tower and jumbled up their words so that they could not communicate. But, do you remember what happened when the disciples of Jesus received the Holy Spirit in that upper room in Jerusalem? The Holy Spirit reached every one of them. What happened to them? They started to talk in different languages. When the power of God, and the Holy Spirit, descends on us, the greatest change takes place in our words.
The disciples of Jesus before they received the Holy Spirit was completely different from the disciples after they received the Holy Spirit. The change is recorded in Acts, Paul’s letters, and letters of Peter and John. They changed. The change was amazing. What changed the most? Their words underwent the greatest change. The Holy Spirit changed their heart into the fountain of life, and their words reflected that change in heart. When their words changed, their character was changed. When character changed, their life changed. Not only that this changed the life of the people who heard the words of these disciples.
Gospel According to John describes the time when Jesus met with a Samaritan woman.
This woman had five husbands, and was living with a new man. The Bible tells us that she searched for and lived with “this man”, “surely this man”, “only this man”, “no one but this man”, and “this is the right man.” But, all of these expectations and hopes were shattered for various reasons, and she was living with another man temporarily.
How about us? We had hopes and expectations on this or that, but we have given up all hopes. Our heart is empty and thirsty. Did we give up hope and are we living a dejected life? This Samaritan woman lost hope. Her heart had dried up. Her heart was full of regret. Jesus said to this woman by a well in town of Sychar:
“Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:13-14)
Jesus could see what was in her heart. Jesus knew exactly how her life had been and knew what was bothering her. Your heart had dried up to the last drop of water. You had been searching the world for someone who could quench your thirst. But, if you continue to live that way, even if you can find temporary relief, you will find yourself thirsty again. But the water I give to you would never dry up. For this water is not like the water you have to come to this well day after day. This water is going to be living water that would continue to flow out from the core of your heart.
April is coming. The season of Lent is coming. And Easter is not far behind. Jesus delivered 7 words on the cross under excruciating pain. The most terrible thing about the cross is that a person is not allowed to die easily and quickly on the cross. That person is nailed to the cross by his palm of hands and dorsum of feet. The pain is extreme. But these wounds are not designed to give fatal blow easily. So the person has to suffer the pain and agony for several days before death. In such a situation, the person would beg to be pierced through the heart and die instantly rather than suffer through such agony and pain. But, the Bible tells us that Jesus somehow died within 6 hours. Some speculate that Jesus was weakened by the torture he had to go through before that. No one is sure. Some say that the pain and agony Jesus endured on the cross was not only physical. Jesus was offering himself as a sacrifice to pay for sins of us all. That put enormous suffering on Jesus. Perhaps that is the reason for his relatively swift death.
There are movies depicting the life of Jesus, containing scenes of this cross. There, Jesus is covered with his own blood from head to toe. We can sympathize with him. We can sense the pain. We can hardly watch Jesus. The physical pain he was going through is excruciating. But, the true pain Jesus was sensing went far beyond mere physical pain.
At that moment, there were two criminals, next to Jesus, who were being executed on the cross. One of the criminal shouted at Jesus saying “If you are a savior, why don’t you save yourself?” But, the other criminal said: “Don’t you fear God since you are under the same sentence? We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.” (Luke 23:40-41) It was clear to this criminal that Jesus did not commit any criminal acts. That is why he said these words.
Last week we studied the anger of Jonah. Jonah was so upset and angry that he wanted to die. When we think of what Jonah felt, we might understand if Jesus got very angry about the misdirected and unjust verdict and even said that he wanted to die rather than endure the extended period of pain on the cross. He had every reason to be angry. His anger would have been justified. But, the words out of Jesus were: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” (Luke 23:34)
He was looking at the mob who whipped him, nailed him to the cross, accused him for no reason, and laughed at Jesus. But, what Jesus did was to plead to God to forgive them because they did not know what they were doing. Try to imagine that we are in the shoes of Jesus now. It would be impossible for us to speak the forgiving words Jesus spoke when we were going through bloody torture and our throat was dry from thirst. This is impossible if we consider our human nature and human response.
And, then, we realize that these words are spoken on behalf of us. God rules the world. Jesus was executed on the cross for our sins. He died instead of us. Did we not know that? Yes, we knew. And yet, we continue to live as before ignoring the love of God. If so, we are the ones who do not know what we are doing. He was and is talking about us. And Jesus prayed to God to forgive these people AND to forgive us. At the worst moment of our human history, these words of life poured out from the fountain of heart of Jesus.
When these words of life touch our heart, and realize in the depth of our heart what Jesus did for us, the following words in the Bible would begin to make sense and the words would be fulfilled in us:
”Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.” (John 7:38)
“Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4:13-14)
And, we will further realize that the prophesy of Ezekiel will be fulfilled at the same time: “This water flows toward the eastern region and goes down into the Arabah, where it enters the Dead Sea. To control our words is to control our heart. Is the spring of living water that Jesus granted us still alive in our heart?
