This is the fourth and last Sunday of Advent, as Christmas Day is this coming Wednesday. クリスマスは来たる水曜日ですので、今日はアドベント最後の第四の日曜日です。
Today, we have all five of the Advent candles lit, 今日は、アドベントキャンドルの５本すべてに火を灯しています。
because we will not be together on Christmas Day to light the fifth and final candle, which is the “Christmas Candle”. クリスマス当日は、最後の５本目である「クリスマスキャンドル」に 一緒に火を灯すことができないからです。
As Austin just talked about in his message, the “Christmas Candle” represents Jesus, that is at the center of the hope, peace, joy, and love, that we receive through Him. 先ほどオースティンが「クリスマス・キャンドル」はイエス様を象徴していると話したように、それはイエス様を通して私達が受けとる希望、平和、喜び、愛の中心にあるものです。
The theme for the fourth Sunday of Advent is love. アドベント第４日曜日のテーマは愛です。
So, this morning, I will talk about how love came down at Christmas. そこで今朝は、クリスマスに愛がどのように降り注いだかについてお話しします。
Actually, there is a song called “Love Came Down at Christmas”, and here are the lyrics of the chorus of that song: 実は『クリスマスに愛が舞い降りた』という曲があるのですが、そのサビの歌詞を紹介しましょう：

Indeed, Christmas is about love come down to us through the birth of God’s Son, Jesus, as a baby born in Bethlehem. 実際にクリスマスとは、神の御子イエスがベツレヘムで赤ん坊として生まれたことを通して、愛が私達に降り注ぐことを意味しています。
So, this morning, I would like to focus on God’s great love for us in sending His Son Jesus Christ そこで今朝は、御子イエス・キリストを遣わされた神様の私達への大いなる愛と、
and the blessings of receiving God’s gift of love. 神様の愛の贈り物を受け取ることの祝福を見ていきたいと思います。
How many of you like to receive gifts? プレゼントをもらうのが好きな人はどれくらい、いるでしょうか？
What kind of gifts do you like to receive? どんなプレゼントをもらうのが好きですか？
Do you feel loved when you receive a gift? プレゼントをもらうと、愛されていると感じますか？
Did you know that there is no one who loves you more than God? 神様以上にあなたを愛している人はいないことをご存知ですか？
And did you know that because God loves you so much that そして、神様がそれほどまでにあなたを愛しているからこそ、
He gives you what is most valuable and the best for you? あなたにとって最も価値あるもの、最も良いものを与えてくださるということを知っていましたか？
Here is something to know about God’s love for us. 私達に対する神様の愛について知っておくべきことがあります。
He knows us completely and He loves us. 神様は私達を完全に知っておられ、愛しておられます。
There is a song called “Known” sung by Tauren Wells, who is a pastor and musician.牧師でありミュージシャンでもあるタウレン・ウェルズが歌う『Known』という曲があります。
The chorus of the song goes like this: この歌のコーラスはこうです：
I’m fully known and loved by You
You won’t let go no matter what I do
私はあなたに完全に知られ、愛されている
私が何をしようと、あなたは手放さない。
And it’s not one or the other
It’s hard truth and ridiculous grace

I don’t know about you, but when I think about the fact that God knows me fully and that He loves me, it makes me tremble. あなたのことは分かりませんが、神様が私のことを完全にご存知で、私を愛してくださっていることを思うと、身震いしてしまいます。
I have five children and I love them. 私には５人の子供がいて、彼らを愛しています。
Just like me, their dad, they all have good traits and bad traits. 父親である私と同じように、彼らにも良いところと悪いところがある。
It is easy to love them in their “good” moments. 彼らの 「良い 」時を愛するのは簡単です。
But it is difficult to love them in their “bad” moments. しかし、彼らの 「悪い 」時を愛するのは難しいのです。
I am sure they will say the same about me. きっと彼らも私について同じことを言うでしょう。
Such love is not the same as God’s love toward us. そのような愛は私達に対する神様の愛とは違います。
God knows us fully (completely) and He loves us. 神様は私達を全く（完全に）知っておられ、愛しておられます。
He knows all the good things about us, even the things that no one else knows about or has seen. 彼は 私達の良いところを、誰も知らず、見たことのないことまで、その全てを知っています。
He knows all the bad things about us, even the things that no one else knows about or has seen. 彼は誰も知らないこと、誰も見たことのない、私達の悪いところの全てを知っています。
And still, He loves us. そして、それでも私達を愛してくださいます。
Such love is called agape, or unconditional love. このような愛はアガペー、すなわち無条件の愛と呼ばれます。
It is unconditional, because it is not dependent on conditions. 無条件なのは、それが条件に依存しないからです。
God’s love is not dependent on us being so-called “good”. 神の愛は、私達がいわゆる 「善良 」であることに依存していないのです。
This does not mean that He is blind to or does not care about what is good and bad. これは、神様が善と悪に目をつぶるとか、気にしないという意味ではありません。
God hates sin and desires for us to walk in His righteousness. 神様は罪を憎み、私達が彼の義のうちを歩むことを願っています。
Yet, God loves us in spite of the fact that the condition of our hearts and therefore our behavior is not always good and righteous. しかし神様は、私達の心の状態、ひいては私達の行動が必ずしも善良で正しいとは限らないにもかかわらず、私達を愛してくださいます。
In fact, if we are all honest with ourselves, we know that our hearts and our behavior is often evil and sinful. 実際、私達が自分に正直になれば、私達の心や行いはしばしば邪悪で罪深いものであることを知っています。
Yet, God loves us. しかし、神様は私達を愛しています。
So, right now, I want you to say to yourself, “God loves me.” だから今、私はあなたに自分に向かって「神様は私を愛している」と言ってほしいのです。
I want you to say to yourself, “God loves me more than I even love myself.” 「神様は、私が自分自身を愛する以上に、私を愛しておられる 」とあなた向かって言って欲しいのです。
This is true. Because we tend to love our own self conditionally as well. これは事実です。 なぜなら、私達も自分を条件つきで愛する傾向があるからです。
We love our self for our good traits but hate our self for our bad traits. 私達は良いところのある自分を愛し、悪いところのある自分を憎むのです。
But God loves us in spite of our sinful condition. しかし、神様は私達が罪深い状態にもかかわらず、私達を愛してくださっています。
And that is why He sent His Son Jesus into this world. だからこそ、御子イエスをこの世に遣わされたのです。
That is why Jesus came as a baby born in Bethlehem. だからこそ、イエス様はベツレヘムで生まれた赤ん坊として来られたのです。
John 3:16（ヨハネの福音書３章１６節）
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” 神はそのひとり子を賜わったほどに、この世を愛して下さった。それは御子を信じる者がひとりも滅びないで、永遠の命を得るためである。
It is God’s love for us, the world, that motivated His sending of His Son Jesus into this world. 御子イエスをこの世に遣わされた動機は、私達、すなわちこの世に対する神の愛なのです。
Notice here in this verse that Jesus, God’s Son, was given to us as a gift. この箇所で、神様の御子イエスは贈り物として私達に与えられたことに注目してください。
What do you do with a gift? あなたは贈り物をどうしますか？
You receive it. あなたは受け取るのです。
The way we receive God’s gift of love, that is Jesus Christ, is by believing in Him. イエス・キリストという神の愛の贈り物を受け取る方法は、イエス様を信じることです。
When we believe in Jesus, we are given (have) eternal life. イエス様を信じる時、私達は永遠の命が与えられます（を手に入れます）。
Eternal life is a life lived with God forever beginning from the moment one believes in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who has come into this world. 永遠の命とは、この世に来られた神の子イエス・キリストを信じた時から始まる、永遠に神と共に生きる人生なのです。
As I mentioned earlier, God’s love is not dependent on us being so-called “good”. 先に述べたように、神様の愛は私達がいわゆる「善良」であるかどうかに左右されるものではありません。
However, because God hates sin and desires for us to walk in His righteousness, He had to deal with the sin in our lives. しかし、神様は罪を憎み、私達が神の義のうちに歩むことを望まれるので、私達の人生にある罪に対処しなければなりませんでした。
Here again, we find God’s love in the sending of His Son Jesus. ここでもまた、神様の愛を御子イエスが遣わされたことに見出すことができます。
Romans 5:6-8（ローマ人への手紙５章６節—８節）
6 For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 6わたしたちがまだ弱かったころ、キリストは、時いたって、不信心な者たちのために死んで下さったのである。7正しい人のために死ぬ者は、ほとんどいないであろう。善人のためには、進んで死ぬ者もあるいはいるであろう。8しかし、まだ罪人であった時、わたしたちのためにキリストが死んで下さったことによって、神はわたしたちに対する愛を示されたのである。
It is God’s love for us, sinners, that motivated Christ Jesus to die for us. 罪人である私達に対する神様の愛が、キリスト・イエスを私達のために死なせたのです。
Notice the timing in which God sent Jesus into this world to die for us. 神様がイエス様をこの世に遣わし、私達のために死なせたタイミングに注目しましょう。
Did God send Jesus to us when we were on our best behavior? 神様がイエス様を遣わされたのは、私達が最善の行動をとっていた時でしょうか？
No. It says, “at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.” いいえ、キリストは、時いたって、不信心な者たちのために死んで下さったというのです。
It says, “God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” しかし、まだ罪人であった時、わたしたちのためにキリストが死んで下さったことによって、神はわたしたちに対する愛を示されたと、ここには言われています。
This is not the so-called Christmas spirit of giving described by the following song: これは、次の歌にあるような、いわゆるクリスマスの贈与精神ではありません：
You better watch out,
You better not cry,
You better not pout,
気をつけたほうがいい
泣かない方がいいよ
ごねない方がいいよ
I’m telling you why . . .
Santa Claus is coming to town!
その理由を言おう
サンタクロースが街にやってくる！
He’s making a list,
And checking it twice,
Gonna find out,
彼はリストを作って、
それを２回、確認するんだ。
そして、見つけるんだ
Who’s naughty or nice.
Santa Claus is coming to town!
誰がいたずらっ子か、いい子か。
サンタクロースが町にやってくる！
He sees you when you’re sleeping,
He knows when you’re awake.

He knows if you’ve been bad or good,
So be good for goodness sake!

I am afraid that some people see God as if He were Santa Claus. 神様をサンタクロースのように見ている人がいることが私には恐ろしく思われます。
God sees and knows all about us, but He’s not making a list and checking it twice based on whether we are naughty or nice. 神様は私達のことを全て見て知っておられますが、リストを作って、私達がいたずらっ子か、いい子かと二度のチェックをするわけではありません。
In fact, the Bible makes it very clear that none of us can be good for goodness sake. 実際、聖書は、私達は誰も善良であるために良い人であることはできないと明言しています。
In other words, none of us can be good all the time, because none of us are completely good. 言い換えれば、私達は誰も完全に善良ではないので、いつも良い人であることはできないのです。
Here is how the Bible describes all of us: 聖書は全ての私達をこう表現しています：
Romans 3:10-12（ローマ人への手紙３章１０節—１２節）
“There is none righteous, not even one; 11 there is none who understands, there is none who seeks for God; 12 all have turned aside, together they have become useless; there is none who does good, there is not even one.” 「義人はいない、ひとりもいない。11悟りのある人はいない、神を求める人はいない。12すべての人は迷い出て、ことごとく無益なものになっている。善を行う者はいない、ひとりもいない」。
If God were making a so-called “gift list” and checking it twice, none of us would deserve to receive anything from Him. もし神様がいわゆる「ギフト・リスト 」を作り、それを２度チェックしたとしたら、私達は誰一人として神様から何も受け取る資格はないでしょう。
Romans 5:8（ローマ人への手紙５章８節）
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. しかし、まだ罪人であった時、わたしたちのためにキリストが死んで下さったことによって、神はわたしたちに対する愛を示されたのである。
So, right now, I want you to say to yourself, “God truly loves me.” ですから今、自分に向かってこう言ってほしいのです。「神様は本当に私を愛している 」と。
I want you to say to yourself, “God loves me in spite of myself.” 自分に向かって「神様はこんな私であるにもかかわらず、私を愛してくださる」と言ってほしいのです。
Here is the truth concerning God’s gift to us. We don’t earn it. It is God’s grace. 神様の贈り物に関する真実がここにあります。 私達はそれを自ら得ることはできません。それは神様の恵みなのです。
Romans 6:23（ローマ人への手紙６章２３節）
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. 罪の支払う報酬は死である。しかし神の賜物は、わたしたちの主キリスト・イエスにおける永遠のいのちである。
Here it says that what we deserve or what we earn because of sin is death. That’s what we deserve. ここには、私達が罪ゆえに得る価は死であると書かれています。 それが私達が受けるべきことなのです。
But God offers to us as a free gift, eternal life in Christ Jesus. That’s God’s grace. しかし神様はキリスト・イエスにある永遠の命を、無償の贈り物として私達に与えてくださいます。 それが神の恵みなのです。
What do you do with a gift? あなたは贈り物をどうしますか？
You receive it. 受け取るのです。
How do we receive God’s love and grace toward us? 私達はどのようにして神の愛と恵みを受け取るのでしょうか？
By believing in His Son Jesus who has died on the cross for our sins! 私達の罪のために十字架上で死なれた御子イエスを信じることによって！
Have you ever heard the phrase, “The gift that keeps on giving”? 「与え続ける贈り物」という言葉を聞いたことがあるでしょうか。
Well, that is really what God’s loving gift of His Son Jesus is. 神様の愛に満ちた御子イエス様の贈り物は、まさにそれなのです。
Have you also heard the saying, “The best present is to be present”? また「最高のプレゼントは存在することだ」という言葉も聞いたことがありますか？
In my old age, what I appreciate most at Christmastime, is to be together with my whole family. 年をとった今、私にとってクリスマスに一番ありがたいことは、家族みんなと一緒にいることです。
I don’t need anything for Christmas. 私はクリスマスには何もいりません。
I feel blessed when the whole family is at home for Christmas. クリスマスに家族全員が家にいる時、私は祝福されていると感じます。
That is the best Christmas present for me. それが私にとって最高のクリスマスプレゼントなのです。
God loves us so much that He came to dwell among us by sending His Son Jesus. 神様は私達をとても愛しておられ、御子イエスを遣わして私達の間に住まわれるようになりました。
Jesus came to be present with us. イエス様は私達と共におるために来られました。
Jesus died for our sins and rose from the dead, so that we can be brought into a right relationship with God and live with Him forever. イエス様が私達の罪のために死に、死からよみがえられたのは、私達が神様との正しい関係に導かれ、神様と共に永遠に生きるためです。
God gives us eternal life through believing in Jesus, so that we may be present with Him forever. イエス様を信じることによって、神様は私達に永遠の命を与えてくださるのです。
Although Jesus is no longer physically present on this earth because He ascended back to heaven, God, the Holy Spirit is now present with us. イエス様は天に昇られたので、もはや肉体的にはこの地上におられませんが、神である聖霊は今、私達と共におられます。
But even the gift of the Holy Spirit is tied to Jesus’ coming into this world. しかし、聖霊の賜物でさえも、イエスがこの世に来られたことと結びついているのです。
1 John 4:9-14（ヨハネの手紙第一４章９節—１４節）
9 By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. 10 In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation (payment) for our sins. 11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has seen God at any time; if we love one another, God abides in us, and His love is perfected in us. 13 By this we know that we abide in Him and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit. 14 We have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son to be the Savior of the world. 9キリストは死人の中からよみがえらされて、もはや死ぬことがなく、死はもはや彼を支配しないことを、知っているからである。10なぜなら、キリストが死んだのは、ただ一度罪に対して死んだのであり、キリストが生きるのは、神に生きるのだからである。11このように、あなたがた自身も、罪に対して死んだ者であり、キリスト・イエスにあって神に生きている者であることを、認むべきである。12だから、あなたがたの死ぬべきからだを罪の支配にゆだねて、その情欲に従わせることをせず、13また、あなたがたの肢体を不義の武器として罪にささげてはならない。むしろ、死人の中から生かされた者として、自分自身を神にささげ、自分の肢体を義の武器として神にささげるがよい。14なぜなら、あなたがたは律法の下にあるのではなく、恵みの下にあるので、罪に支配されることはないからである。
It is God’s love for us, who are called His beloved, that the Holy Spirit has been given. 聖霊が与えられたのは、神様に愛されている者達に対する神の愛なのです。
The Holy Spirit is called the Helper and Comforter. 聖霊は助け主、慰め主と呼ばれます。
He helps and comforts us to abide in God’s love and to love one another. 聖霊は、私達が神様の愛にとどまり、互いに愛し合うことを助け、慰めてくださいます。
How do we accept God’s love toward us? 私達はどのようにして神様の愛を受け入れるのでしょうか？
By believing in God’s Son Jesus and receiving the Holy Spirit that enables us to live in His love. 神様の御子イエス様を信じ、神様の愛に生きることを可能にしてくださる聖霊を受けることによってです。
Not only does God love us more than anyone and even ourselves, but He so desires to live in us through the Holy Spirit. 神様は誰よりも、私達自身よりも私達を愛しておられるだけでなく、聖霊を通して私達の内に生きることを望んでおられるのです。
Thus, His love is fully present in us at all times because He abides in us. このように、神様は私達の内にとどまってくださるので、神様の愛は私達のうちにいつも完全に存在しているのです。
So, not only did love come down at Christmas in the person of Jesus Christ, ですから、クリスマスにイエス・キリストというお方によって愛が降臨されただけでなく、
but now we can enjoy the love of God daily in our lives through the Holy Spirit. 今や私達は聖霊を通して、私達の生活の中で日々神の愛を楽しむことができるのです。
This Christmas, let us once again remember how much God loves us by believing in Jesus and receiving Him as God’s gift of love to us. 今年のクリスマス、イエス様を信じ、イエス様を神の愛の贈り物として受け取ることで、神様がどれほど私達を愛してくださっているかを、もう一度思い起こしましょう。
Let us enjoy God’s love, and let us also share Jesus and therefore God’s love with others. 神様の愛を喜び楽しみ、イエス様を、ひいては神の愛を他の人々と分かち合いましょう。
