待降節第三主日には、紫色の他のろうそくとは一線を画すピンクの待降節ろうそくに火を灯します。待降節第三日曜日のテーマは喜びであり、このピンクのろうそくは「羊飼いのろうそく」と呼ばれます。それは、最初のクリスマスに羊飼いたちがそうであったように、私たちも喜びにあふれるよう促すために、そう呼ばれているのです。
ルカの福音書２章８節から２０節は、最初のクリスマスの夜に羊飼いたちが体験したことを私たちに伝えています。そこでは、彼らが天使から「大きな喜びの福音」を受け取ったことが記されています。それは、主キリストであるイエスの誕生に関する知らせでした。羊飼いたちから、イエス・キリストの到来という良き知らせにどう応えるべきかを学び、彼らが経験した大きな喜びにあずかりましょう（本多）。

This is the third Sunday of Advent. 今日は待降節の第三日曜日です。
Look at the Advent candles, and note that the third Advent candle is pink and not purple like the other Advent candles besides the larger Christ candle which is white. 待降節のろうそくを見てください。第三番目のろうそくはピンク色で、他の待降節のろうそく（より大きな白いキリストのろうそくを除く）のような紫色ではありません。
The theme for the third Sunday of Advent is joy and the pink candle is referred to as the Shepherd’s Candle. 待降節第三日曜日のテーマは喜びであり、このピンクのろうそくは「羊飼いのろうそく」と呼ばれます。
It is called the Shepherd’s Candle to encourage us to rejoice like the shepherds did on that first Christmas. この「羊飼いのろうそく」という名は、最初のクリスマスに羊飼いたちがそうであったように、私たちも喜びにあふれてほしいという願いが込められています。
Let us read about what the shepherds experienced on that first Christmas night. それでは、最初のクリスマスの夜に羊飼いたちが体験したことを読みましょう。
Luke 2:8-20（ルカの福音書２章８～２０節）
8 In the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; 11 for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 This will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.” 15 When the angels had gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds began saying to one another, “Let us go straight to Bethlehem then, and see this thing that has happened which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 So they came in a hurry and found their way to Mary and Joseph, and the baby as He lay in the manger. 17 When they had seen this, they made known the statement which had been told them about this Child. 18 And all who heard it wondered at the things which were told them by the shepherds. 19 But Mary treasured all these things, pondering them in her heart. 20 The shepherds went back, glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, just as had been told them. 8さて、この地方で羊飼たちが夜、野宿しながら羊の群れの番をしていた。9すると主の御使が現れ、主の栄光が彼らをめぐり照したので、彼らは非常に恐れた。10御使は言った、「恐れるな。見よ、すべての民に与えられる大きな喜びを、あなたがたに伝える。11きょうダビデの町に、あなたがたのために救主がお生れになった。このかたこそ主なるキリストである。12あなたがたは、幼な子が布にくるまって飼葉おけの中に寝かしてあるのを見るであろう。それが、あなたがたに与えられるしるしである」。13するとたちまち、おびただしい天の軍勢が現れ、御使と一緒になって神をさんびして言った、14「いと高きところでは、神に栄光があるように、地の上では、み心にかなう人々に平和があるように」。15御使たちが彼らを離れて天に帰ったとき、羊飼たちは「さあ、ベツレヘムへ行って、主がお知らせ下さったその出来事を見てこようではないか」と、互に語り合った。16そして急いで行って、マリヤとヨセフ、また飼葉おけに寝かしてある幼な子を捜しあてた。17彼らに会った上で、この子について自分たちに告げ知らされた事を、人々に伝えた。18人々はみな、羊飼たちが話してくれたことを聞いて、不思議に思った。19しかし、マリヤはこれらの事をことごとく心に留めて、思いめぐらしていた。20羊飼たちは、見聞きしたことが何もかも自分たちに語られたとおりであったので、神をあがめ、またさんびしながら帰って行った。
Please note what the shepherds were doing.羊飼いたちが何をしてたか、よく見てください。
They were staying out in the fields and keeping watch over their flock by night. 彼らは野原に泊まり、夜通し羊の群れを見守っていたのです。
They were doing what they normally do, that is “shepherd” their sheep. 彼らは普段通り、つまり羊を「牧する」という仕事をしていたのです。
In other words, it was a mundane, every day, or should we say every night, thing they were doing. つまり、それはごく平凡な、日常的な、いやむしろ毎晩の習慣的な行為だったのです。
So, obviously, on that particular night, these shepherds were not expecting anything out of the ordinary to take place. ですから当然ながら、あの特別な夜、羊飼いたちは何か非日常的な出来事が起きるとは全く予想していませんでした。
Perhaps, on some nights there was an occasional scare by some wild animals that may have come after their sheep, 時折、野生の動物が羊を狙って現れ、恐怖を味わう夜もあったかもしれませんが、
but nothing could have prepared these shepherds for what they experienced that night. その夜に体験した出来事に対して、彼らが準備することは何一つなかったのです。
It was then in the quietness of that night, that an angel of the Lord suddenly stood before them! その夜の静けさの中、主の御使いが突然、彼らの前に立ちました！
There was no forewarning. Boom! Right before them was an angel of the Lord. 何の前触れもなく。ドーン！彼らの目の前に主の御使いが現れたのです。
And not only that, but the glory of the Lord shone around them, which made the shepherds terribly frightened. それだけでなく、主の栄光が彼らを取り囲んで輝いたため、羊飼いたちはひどく恐れました。
It is interesting that the first words out of the mouth of the angel were “Do not be afraid.” 興味深いことに、御使いが最初に口にした言葉は「恐れるな」でした。
This was true for when the angel of the Lord appeared to a priest named Zacharias and told him that he and his wife Elizabeth will be given a son in their old age (Luke 1:13). このことは主の御使いがザカリヤという祭司に現れ、彼と妻エリサベツが年老いてから息子を授かると告げた時にも当てはまります（ルカ1:13）。
That son named John, became known as “John the Baptist,” and would prepare the hearts of the people for the Christ to come. その息子ヨハネは「バプテスマのヨハネ」として知られるようになり、来るべきキリストのために人々の心を整えることになりました。
The words, “Do not be afraid,” were also said by the angel Gabriel when he appeared to the virgin Mary 「恐れるな」という言葉は、天使ガブリエルが処女マリアの前に現れ、
and told her that she will conceive in her womb and bear a son, and shall name Him Jesus (Luke 1:30-31). 彼女が胎内に子を宿し、男の子を産み、その名をイエスと名付けると告げた時にも語られました（ルカによる福音書1:30-31）。
So, there must have been something in encountering an angel that caused these people to be afraid. ですから、天使との遭遇には、これらの人々を恐れさせた何かがあったに違いありません。
The angel must have been wondrous and terrifyingly beautiful to behold. 天使の姿は、見る者を驚嘆させ、畏怖させるほどの美しさだったに違いありません。
But after each of these encounters, following the words of “Do not be afraid,” there was a wonderful message of blessing. しかし、これらの遭遇のたびに、「恐れるな」という言葉の後に、祝福の素晴らしい知らせが続いたのです。
And for the shepherds, they were told by the angel: そして羊飼いたちには、天使がこう告げました：
“Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:10-11)「恐れるな。見よ、すべての民に与えられる大きな喜びを、あなたがたに伝える。きょうダビデの町に、あなたがたのために救主がお生れになった。このかたこそ主なるキリストである」。（ルカの福音書２章１０～１１節）
Yes, indeed, the angel of the Lord brought good news to the shepherds. 確かに、主の御使いは羊飼いたちに良い知らせをもたらしました。
Note that the good news that they brought was not of normal joy. 彼らがもたらした良い知らせは、普通の喜びではなかったことに留意してください。
Here in this passage, it says that it is good news of great joy which will be for all the people. この箇所で、それは全ての民にとって大きな喜びとなる良い知らせであると記されています。
Thus, the good news of Christmas is not one of natural joy, but supernatural joy. したがって、クリスマスの良い知らせは、自然な喜びではなく、超自然的な喜びなのです。
God Himself has come down in the person of His Son. 神様ご自身が御子の姿で降臨されたのです。
The long-awaited Savior is born. 待ち望まれた救い主が生まれたのです。
Thus, the angel declared to the shepherds: “I bring you good news of great joy.” (Luke 2:10) こうして天使は羊飼いたちに宣言しました。「私は、大きな喜びを、あなたがたに伝える」（ルカ2:10）
And as we heard a couple Sundays ago, as Pastor Okura spoke about the Magi from the east going to Bethlehem led by a star to see the Child Jesus, they too were filled with great joy. そして数週間前の日曜日に、大倉牧師が星に導かれてベツレヘムへ赴き幼子イエスを見た東方の博士たちについて語られたように、彼らもまた大きな喜びに満たされたのです。
Matthew 2:10（マタイの福音書２章１０節）
When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 彼らはその星を見て、非常な喜びにあふれた。
The great joy that the Magi had was not just in seeing the star 東方の博士たちが感じた大きな喜びは、星を見たことだけにあるのではなく、
but in the fact that the star led them directly to where Jesus was. その星が彼らを直接、イエス様のいる場所へと導いたという事実にありました。
Yes, there is great joy in the coming of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, into this world! そう、神の子イエス・キリストがこの世に来られたことには、確かに大きな喜びがあるのです！
If we survey the Bible, we will see the word “joy” used more than two hundred times in an English translation. 聖書を調べてみますと「喜び」という言葉は英語訳で二百回以上使われていることが分かります。
However, there are not too many instances when the words “great joy” appears in the Bible. しかし「大きな喜び」という言葉が聖書に登場する例はそれほど多くありません。
The times when “great joy” is used, it is used for the highest moments. 「大きな喜び」が使われる場面は、最高の瞬間を指すのです。
Moments such as when King David’s own son was anointed as his successor (1 Kings 1:40). ダビデ王自身の息子が後継者として油注がれた時（列王記上1:40）。
It was used to describe what the people of Judah felt when the Passover was reinstituted by King Hezekiah after generations of neglect (2 Chronicles 30:26). それは何世代にもわたって怠られてきた過越祭がヒゼキヤ王によって復活した時、ユダの民が感じた喜びを表すためにも用いられました（歴代誌下30:26）。
It was also used to describe what the people experienced at the dedication of Nehemiah’s rebuilt walls after the return from exile (Nehemiah 12:43). また、バビロン捕囚からの帰還後、ネヘミヤが再建した城壁の奉献式で民が経験した喜びを表現するためにも用いられました（ネヘミヤ記12:43）。
So, we can see that the words “great joy” is sparingly used in the Bible, and they are only used for the highest moments found in the Scriptures. このように、「大いなる喜び」という言葉は聖書において控えめに用いられ、聖書に記された最高の瞬間にのみ使われていることがわかります。
In the New Testament, besides what we have already noted of the “great joy” at Jesus’ birth, there is also “great joy” that is attributed to Jesus’ resurrection (Matthew 28:8) and His ascension (Luke 24:52). 新約聖書では、イエス様の誕生における「大きな喜び」に加え、イエス様の復活（マタイ28:8）と昇天（ルカ24:52）にも「大きな喜び」が記されています。
For us, there is also “great joy” used in Acts 15:3 to describe the wonderful inclusion of Gentiles into the family of God. 私たちにとっては、異邦人が神の家族に受け入れられたという素晴らしい出来事を描写するために使徒行伝15:3で使われている「大きな喜び」もあります。
And then there is “great joy” that is used to describe our experience in coming into God’s presence in heaven (Jude 1:24). そして、天において神の御前に立つ私たちの経験を表現するために用いられる「大きな喜び」があります（ユダの手紙1:24）。
In hearing these things, does it bring you great joy? これらのことを聞いて、あなたは大きな喜びを感じますか？
Let us take a moment to think about what brings us joy. 私たちに喜びをもたらすものは何か、少し考えてみましょう。
What brings you joy? あなたにとって喜びとは何ですか？
Perhaps it is when you see a beautiful sunset, or a night sky filled with sparkling stars. 美しい夕焼けを見た時かもしれません。きらめく星でいっぱいの夜空を見た時かもしれません。
Perhaps it is when you are eating a meal with your family or friends. 家族や友人と食事をしている時かもしれません。
Perhaps it is when you see the peaceful face of your baby or child sleeping. 眠る赤ん坊や子供の安らかな顔を見た時かもしれません。
Perhaps it is when you open up a Christmas gift to find the very thing that you wanted. あるいは、クリスマスプレゼントを開けて、まさに欲しかったものを見つけた時かもしれません。
But what brings you great joy? しかし、あなたにとって大きな喜びとは何でしょうか？
Perhaps it was the time when your name was called and you walked across the stage to receive your certificate of graduation or diploma. それは、卒業証書や学位記を受け取るために、自分の名前が呼ばれ、ステージを歩いて行った時のことかもしれません。
Perhaps it was the time when you stood looking into the beautiful eyes of your spouse-to-be on your wedding day. あるいは、結婚式の日に、将来の配偶者の美しい瞳を見つめながら立っていた時のことかもしれません。
A note to those who are married, including myself, let us make sure that we continue to maintain that great joy every day in our marriages. 既婚者の方々へ、私自身も含めて、結婚生活の中でその大きな喜びを毎日保ち続けましょう。
If you are not married and don’t understand what I just said, ask a married couple of what I mean. もしあなたが未婚で、今言ったことが理解できないなら、既婚のカップルに私の意味するところを尋ねてみてください。
Perhaps great joy was brought to you when your long-awaited child was born and you heard their cry for the first time. 待ちに待った子供が生まれ、初めてその泣き声を聞いた時、大きな喜びが訪れたかもしれません。
Or maybe you have experienced something like I did. あるいは私と同じような経験をした方もいるでしょう。
I think there is great joy in the safe return home of a loved one. 愛する人の無事な帰還には大きな喜びがあると思います。
A couple of years ago, one of my sons was on deployment with the Army in the Middle East. 数年前、私の息子の一人が陸軍として中東に派遣されていました。
Soon after he got there, the Gaza War broke out on October 7, 2023, 彼が現地に到着して間もなく、2023年10月7日にガザ戦争が勃発し、
with 251 people, mostly Israeli citizens, being kidnapped and taken hostage to the Gaza Strip. 251人（主にイスラエル市民）が拉致されガザ地区へ人質として連れ去られました。
Thankfully, the last of the living hostages were released on October 13 of this year. 幸いにも、生存していた最後の人質は今年10月13日に解放されました。
Just as the families of these hostages must have felt great joy when their loved one returned safely home, これらの人質の家族が愛する人の無事な帰還を心から喜んだように、
I felt great joy when my son safely returned from his tour of duty in the Middle East. 私も息子が中東での任務から無事に帰還した時、大きな喜びを感じました。
I am sure many of you have experienced such great joy. 皆さんの中にも、こうした大きな喜びを経験した方が多くいらっしゃるでしょう
A loved one returning home from a tour of duty. 任務から帰還した愛する人。
A loved one returning home from the hospital. 病院から帰ってきた愛する人。
A child returning home from college for the holidays. 大学から休暇で帰省する子供。
There is great joy when a loved one returns safely home. 愛する人が無事に家に帰ってくる時、大きな喜びがあります。
We find this to be true in the three parables that Jesus shared in Luke 15. ルカによる福音書15章でイエス様が語った三つのたとえ話にも、このことが表れています。
In the first parable, Jesus talks about the great joy of a shepherd that finds his one lost sheep. 最初のたとえ話で、イエスは迷子になった一匹の羊を見つけた羊飼いの大きな喜びについて語ります。
Though he has a hundred sheep, he leaves the ninety-nine in the open pasture and goes after the one lost sheep. 百匹の羊を飼っているにもかかわらず、彼は九十九匹を野原に残し、迷子になった一匹の羊を探しに行きます。
And when he finds the sheep, he calls together his friends and his neighbors and celebrates with them the safe return of the one lost sheep. そして羊を見つけると、友人と隣人を呼び集め、迷子になった一匹の羊が無事に帰ってきたことを共に祝うのです。
Jesus goes on to say: イエス様はさらにこう言われます：
Luke 15:7（ルカの福音書１５章７節）
“I tell you that in the same way, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.” 。「よく聞きなさい。それと同じように、罪人がひとりでも悔い改めるなら、悔改めを必要としない九十九人の正しい人のためにもまさる大きいよろこびが、天にあるであろう」。
In the second parable, Jesus talks about the great joy of a woman finding her one lost coin. 第二のたとえ話で、イエス様は一人の女性が失った一枚の銀貨を見つけた時の大きな喜びについて語ります。
Though she has ten silver coins, she sweeps and searches her house until she finds her one lost coin. 彼女は十枚の銀貨を持っていたにもかかわらず、家の中を掃き清め、探し回って、失った一枚の銀貨を見つけるまで探します。
And when she finds the coin, she calls together her friends and her neighbors and celebrates with them the finding of the one lost coin. そして銀貨を見つけると、友人と近所の人々を呼び集め、失った一枚の銀貨が見つかったことを共に祝うのです。
Jesus goes on to say: イエス様は続けてこう言われます：
Luke 15:10（ルカの福音書１５章１０節）
“In the same way, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”「よく聞きなさい。それと同じように、罪人がひとりでも悔い改めるなら、神の御使たちの前でよろこびがあるであろう」。
In the third and final parable, Jesus talks about the great joy of a father who receives back his one lost son. 三つ目は最後のたとえ話で、イエス様は失われた一人の息子を取り戻した父の大きな喜びについて語ります。
The father has two sons. An older son who diligently serves his father and a younger son who leaves home with his share of the inheritance and squanders it. この父には二人の息子がいました。父に忠実に仕える長男と、相続分を持って家を出て財産を浪費した次男です。
However, having become so impoverished, the younger son comes to his senses, and he decides to return to his father, not expecting to be treated as a son but as one of his hired men. しかし、極貧に陥った次男は我に返り、息子としてではなく雇い人の一人として扱われる覚悟で父の元へ戻る決心をする。
Jesus goes on to say: イエス様は続けてこう語ります：
Luke 15:20-24（ルカの福音書１５章２０～２４節）
20 “So he got up and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion for him, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. 21 And the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and in your sight; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ 22 But the father said to his slaves, ‘Quickly bring out the best robe and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand and sandals on his feet; 23 and bring the fattened calf, kill it, and let us eat and celebrate; 24 for this son of mine was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found.’ And they began to celebrate.” 20「そこで立って、父のところへ出かけた。まだ遠く離れていたのに、父は彼をみとめ、哀れに思って走り寄り、その首をだいて接吻した。21むすこは父に言った、『父よ、わたしは天に対しても、あなたにむかっても、罪を犯しました。もうあなたのむすこと呼ばれる資格はありません』。22しかし父は僕たちに言いつけた、『さあ、早く、最上の着物を出してきてこの子に着せ、指輪を手にはめ、はきものを足にはかせなさい。23また、肥えた子牛を引いてきてほふりなさい。食べて楽しもうではないか。24このむすこが死んでいたのに生き返り、いなくなっていたのに見つかったのだから』。それから祝宴がはじまった」。
The parable continues with the older son being angry with his father’s treatment of his younger brother. たとえ話は続き、兄が弟への父の扱いに怒りを覚えます。
And here, we get to hear the true heart of the father who has great joy in the safe return of his lost son: ここで、私たちは失われた息子の無事な帰還に大きな喜びを見出す父の真の心を知ることになります：
Luke 15:31-32（ルカの福音書１５章３１～３２節）
31 “And he said to him, ‘Son, you have always been with me, and all that is mine is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and rejoice, for this brother of yours was dead and has begun to live, and was lost and has been found.’” 31「すると父は言った、『子よ、あなたはいつもわたしと一緒にいるし、またわたしのものは全部あなたのものだ。32しかし、このあなたの弟は、死んでいたのに生き返り、いなくなっていたのに見つかったのだから、喜び祝うのはあたりまえである』」。
Please understand. ご理解ください。
We are all like the lost son. 私たちは皆、この迷える息子のような存在です。
The Bible says: 聖書にはこう記されています：
Romans 3:10（ローマ書３章１０節）
“There is none righteous, not even one” 「義人はいない、ひとりもいない」
Romans 3:23（ローマ書３章２３節）
All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God すべての人は罪を犯したため、神の栄光を受けられなくなっており
Furthermore, it says in the Bible:さらに聖書は言います。
Romans 5:6-8（ローマ書５章６～８節）
6 For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. 6わたしたちがまだ弱かったころ、キリストは、時いたって、不信心な者たちのために死んで下さったのである。7正しい人のために死ぬ者は、ほとんどいないであろう。善人のためには、進んで死ぬ者もあるいはいるであろう。8しかし、まだ罪人であった時、わたしたちのためにキリストが死んで下さったことによって、神はわたしたちに対する愛を示されたのである。
So, it is in God’s love for us that Jesus was not only sent into this world as a baby, ですから、神様は私たちを愛しておられるゆえに、イエス様は赤ん坊としてこの世に遣わされただけでなく、
but He grew up to die for us in order that we might be brought into a right relationship with God the Father. 私たちが父なる神との正しい関係に導かれるために、成長して私たちのために死なれたのです。
In the parable of the lost son, the father that represents God the Father ran toward his son in order to embrace and kiss him. 放蕩息子のたとえ話では、父なる神を表す父親が、息子を抱きしめて口づけするために走り寄りました。
He did so while the son was still a long way off. 息子はまだ遠く離れていたのに、そうされたのです。
From far away heaven, the Heavenly Father, drew near to us through the sending of His Son Jesus Christ. はるか遠くの天から、天の父なる神は御子イエス・キリストを遣わすことによって、私たちに近づかれたのです。
In Christ Jesus, God came to us. キリスト・イエスにおいて、神は私たちのもとに来られました。
God took on human flesh. 神は人間の肉体をまとわれたのです。
Thus, Jesus is called Immanuel, “God with us” (Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23). それゆえ、イエスは「インマヌエル（神と共にいる者）」と呼ばれます（イザヤ7:14、マタイ1:23）。
Again, the birth of Jesus our Savior, who is Christ the Lord, is good news of great joy. 繰り返しますが、救い主イエス、すなわち主キリストの誕生は、大いなる喜びの福音です。
Because in the coming of Christ, we are able to be embraced by the Heavenly Father. なぜならキリストの到来によって、私たちは天の父に抱擁されることができるからです。
The curse of separation from God that came through Adam has been broken by Jesus’ redemptive work upon the cross. アダムを通して来た神からの分離という呪いは、十字架におけるイエスの贖いの業によって打ち破られたのです。
Thus, through Jesus, and specifically by believing in Him, we like the lost son in the parable, are able to come home to God the Father. こうして、イエス様を通して、具体的にはイエス様を信じることによって、私たちはたとえ話の中の迷える息子のように、父なる神のもとに帰ることを可能にされたのです。
And when we do so, we are received with great joy. そして、そうする時、私たちは大きな喜びをもって迎えられます。
This great joy was proclaimed on that first Christmas night as the angel of the Lord said to the shepherds: この大きな喜びは、最初のクリスマスの夜、主の御使いが羊飼いたちに告げた言葉によって宣言されたのです：
“I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:10-11) 「見よ、すべての民に与えられる大きな喜びを、あなたがたに伝える。きょうダビデの町に、あなたがたのために救主がお生れになった。このかたこそ主なるキリストである」。（ルカの福音書２章１０～１１節）
And that great joy was magnified with the appearance of a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: そして、天の軍勢の群れが現れ、神を賛美してこう言うのを見て、その大きな喜びはさらに大きくなりました。
“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.” (Luke 2:14) 「いと高きところでは、神に栄光があるように、地の上では、み心にかなう人々に平和があるように」。（ルカの福音書２章１４節）
And since such great joy could not be contained quietly or passively within the shepherds, 羊飼いたちは、この大きな喜びを静かに、あるいは受動的に胸に秘めておくことなどできずに、

What began as a normal, mundane, and quiet night in the fields outside of Bethlehem, turned into an awesome night of great joy because of the birth of Jesus the Savior, who is Christ the Lord. ベツレヘム郊外の野原で始まった、ごく普通で平凡で静かな夜が、救い主イエス、すなわち主キリストの誕生によって、大きな喜びに満ちた驚くべき夜へと変わりました。
Thus, also for us, when we personally come to Jesus and encounter Him, we are filled with great joy and are moved to glorify and praise God. それゆえ、私たちもまた、個人的にイエス様に近づき、主と出会う時、大きな喜びに満たされ、神を賛美し栄光を帰するようになるのです。
And this great joy cannot be contained to just Christmastime. そしてこの大きな喜びは、クリスマスの時期だけに留まるものではありません。
In fact, because of this great joy, we come together every Sunday to worship God because of Jesus’ coming and what He has done for us. 実際、この大きな喜びゆえに、私たちは毎週日曜日、イエス様の到来と私たちのために成し遂げてくださった御業を称え、共に神を礼拝するのです。
But yes, especially at this time of the year and also at Eastertime, we seem to express our great joy even more. しかし確かに、特にこの季節や復活祭の時期には、私たちの大きな喜びがより一層、表れるようです。

In closing, I would like to share with you the synopsis of a popular Spanish story about a father and his son named “Paco,” which is found in Earnest Hemingway’s short story “The Capital of the World”. 最後に、アーネスト・ヘミングウェイの短編小説『世界の首都』に登場する、スペインで人気の父と息子「パコ」の物語の概要を紹介したいと思います。
In the story, Paco was a rebellious, disobedient, and irresponsible son, who was unwilling to follow his father’s rules, and preferred his own way of living. 物語の中で、パコは反抗的で、言うことを聞かず、無責任な息子でした。父のルールに従うことを拒み、自分の生き方を好みました。
One evening in the heat of an argument, Paco said some hurtful and hateful words at his father. ある夜、激しい口論の最中、パコは父親に傷つけるような憎しみに満ちた言葉を浴びせました。
He then packed up his few possessions, and stomped out the door, slamming it behind him. そしてわずかな所持品をまとめ、ドアをバタンと閉めながら家を出たのです。
And traveled to Madrid from his small town, hoping to never see his father again. 小さな町からマドリードへと旅立ち、二度と父親に会わずに済むことを願っていました。
However, in spite of his son’s rebellion, the father still loved him. しかし、息子の反抗にもかかわらず、父親は彼を愛し続けていました。
He was concerned for him, and wondered if he was well, or in trouble, or possibly hurt. 父は息子の安否を案じ、無事か、トラブルに巻き込まれていないか、あるいは怪我をしていないかと心配していたのです。
Finally, the father decided that he had to do something, for he could no longer bear the pain of separation. ついに父は、別れの痛みに耐えきれなくなったため、何か行動を起こさねばならないと決意しました。
So, he traveled to Madrid, and he placed a personal ad in the newspaper, El Liberal. そこで父はマドリードへ向かい、新聞『エル・リベラル』に個人広告を掲載したのです。

The next day at noon when the father arrived at the Hotel Montana, he was astonished to see that there standing before him were 800 young men, all named “Paco.” 翌日正午、父親がホテル・モンタナに到着すると、目の前に800人の若者たちが立っているのを見て驚きました。全員が「パコ」という名だった。
Each one of them came there wanting the embrace of forgiveness and reconciliation with their father. 彼らは皆、父との和解とゆるしの抱擁を求めて集まってきたのです。
There is great joy in the coming of Jesus Christ. イエス・キリストの到来には大きな喜びがともないます。
Our relationship with God has been marred because of sin, that is our rebellious and disobedient ways toward God. 私たちの神との関係は、罪、すなわち神に対する私たちの反抗と不従順によって損なわれてきました。
But because of God’s great love for us, He has sent to us His Son Jesus. しかし神は私たちへの深い愛ゆえに、私たちの元に御子イエスを遣わされたのです。
And through Jesus, who is Christ the Lord, we are brought back into a right relationship with God the Father. そして主キリストであるイエスを通して、私たちは父なる神との正しい関係へと戻されるのです。
Because Jesus paid the penalty for our sins, which is death, by going to the cross and dying on our behalf. なぜならイエス様は、私たちの代わりに十字架にかかり死んで、私たちの罪に対する罰である死を支払われたからです。
For Jesus Himself said to His disciples: イエス様ご自身が弟子たちにこう言われたのです：
“Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.” (John 15:13) 「人がその友のために自分の命を捨てること、これよりも大きな愛はない」。（ヨハネの福音書１５章１３節）
And that is exactly what Jesus has done for all of us. そして、まさにそれがイエス様が私たちすべてのために成し遂げてくださったことです。
Thus, the baby Jesus that was born in the city of David is our Savior, who is Christ the Lord. こうして、ダビデの町に生まれた幼子イエスは、私たちの救い主、主キリストなのです。
And there is great joy for God the Father when we respond to His call to us, そして私たちが父なる神の招きに応える時、神は大きな喜びに満たされます。
which is found throughout the Bible and is somewhat like the ad in the story I just told: この招きは聖書全体に記されており、先ほどお話しした物語の広告に似ています：
