今回のメッセージでは、サウル王を取り上げます。聖書の中で、サウルはベニヤミン族のキシの子として紹介されています。また、彼の身体的特徴についての記述も見られます。容姿端麗で、文字通り群衆の中で目立つ人物を王とするなら、サウルは最有力候補でした。しかし、イスラエルの王は人気投票で民が選ぶものではありませんでした。
その選択は神様が、当時、祭司であり預言者であり士師であった神の僕、サムエルを通してなされることになっていました。サウルは神に選ばれてイスラエルの初代王となりましたが、当初は大きな将来性を持って出発したものの、悲しいことに全くの不名誉に終わったことが見られます。私たちは彼の人生から重要な教訓を学び、彼の過ちを繰り返さないようにしたいと願います（本多）。

It is truly a blessing to be able to come to worship the Lord together, to sing praises to our God and to listen carefully to and heed His Word. 共に主を礼拝し、神への賛美を歌い、神の御言葉に耳を傾け、耳を傾けることができるのは、本当にさいわいなことです。
Right after the worship service, do you get to have some time to think about the message that you just heard? 皆さんは礼拝の直後、今聞いたメッセージについて考える時があるでしょうか？
Well, last Sunday, I truly did. 先週の日曜日、私は本当にそうでした。
It is not often that I leave right away without talking to anyone after the worship service. 礼拝の後、誰とも話さずにすぐに帰ることはあまりありません。
However, last Sunday, I did just that as I rushed out of the church facility to get to my car and drive up to Lomita. しかし、先週の日曜日、私は教会を急いで出て車に乗り込み、ロミータまで車を走らせました。
It was a little before 12 pm, and I was hoping to make it in time for the 2pm Ordination Ceremony of Pastor Daniel Inoue and Pastor Yuya Seki. その時は正午少し前で、ダニエル・井上牧師と関勇也牧師の午後２時からの按手礼式に間に合わせたいと思っていました。
As I drove up to their church, I could not help but give thanks to God for the lines that separate the lanes on the freeway. 彼らの教会まで車を走らせながら、高速道路の車線を区切る線があることを神に感謝せずにはいられませんでした。
As Pastor Okura mentioned last Sunday, I too cannot imagine driving the 2 hours up to my destination without those lines guiding the thousands of cars that headed in the same direction. 先週の日曜日に大倉牧師が話されたように、私も目的地までの２時間を、同じ方向に向かう何千台もの車を導く車線なしで運転することは想像できません。
Indeed, without guidelines in our lives, our lives will be a big jumble of mass confusion and full of accidents. 確かに、私達の人生に指針がなければ、私達の人生は大混乱となり、事故だらけになってしまうでしょう。
What Pastor Okura spoke to us last Sunday was somewhat reiterated through the words of exhortation that Pastor Shinji Seki gave to Pastor Daniel and Pastor Yuya. 先週の日曜日に大倉牧師が私たちに語ってくださったことは、関真二牧師がダニエル牧師と勇也牧師に語った励ましの言葉を通して、さらに繰り返されました。
Pastor Shinji Seki, Pastor Yuya’s father, spoke from 1 Peter 5:1-4 where it says: 勇也牧師の父である関真二牧師は、第一ペテロ５章１節―４節から語られました：
1 Peter 5:1-4（第一ペテロ５章１節—４節）
1 Therefore, I exhort the elders among you, as your fellow elder and witness of the sufferings of Christ, and a partaker also of the glory that is to be revealed, 2 shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness; 3 nor yet as lording it over those allotted to your charge, but proving to be examples to the flock. 4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. 1そこで、あなたがたのうちの長老たちに勧める。わたしも、長老のひとりで、キリストの苦難についての証人であり、また、やがて現れようとする栄光にあずかる者である。2あなたがたにゆだねられている神の羊の群れを牧しなさい。しいられてするのではなく、神に従って自ら進んでなし、恥ずべき利得のためではなく、本心から、それをしなさい。3また、ゆだねられた者たちの上に権力をふるうことをしないで、むしろ、群れの模範となるべきである。4そうすれば、大牧者が現れる時には、しぼむことのない栄光の冠を受けるであろう。
Pastor Seki then gave several words of exhortation and reminder to the soon to be ordained two pastors from this passage of Scripture. 関牧師は、まもなく按手を受ける二人の牧師に向けて、この聖句からいくつかの励ましと心に留めるべき言葉を語りました。
Here is one of the things he said that I think is relevant for us and the message this morning. その中で私達と今朝のメッセージに関係すると思われる言葉を紹介します。
Pastor Seki said that authority has been entrusted (allotted) to pastors to shepherd the flock of God. 関牧師は、牧会者には神の群れを牧会する権威が委ねられている（割り当てられている）と語りました。
However, that authority is only effective as long as they humbly and obediently follow the Chief Shepherd, their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. しかし、その権威は、彼らが主なる羊飼い、主であり救い主であるイエス・キリストに謙虚に従う限りにおいてのみ有効です。
Thus, in order to be a good shepherd to their flock, first and foremost they need to be good sheep that follow Jesus Christ. このように、羊の群れにとって良い羊飼いであるためには、何よりもまず、イエス・キリストに従う良い羊である必要があります。
This is a good reminder to all of us, who in different ways are entrusted with the care of leading others. このことは、様々な形で他者を導くことを任されている私達全員にとって、良い戒めとなります。
And, this is especially true for those who are called and anointed by God to shepherd people. そして、このことは、羊飼いとして神から召され、油注がれた者にとっては、とりわけ正しいことなのです。
The ordination of a pastor is to affirm these things and to pray over them, so that they can fulfill God’s calling and anointing upon them to shepherd the flock. 牧師の按手は、これらのことを確認し、彼らが群れを牧するために神の召命と油注ぎを果たすことができるように、彼らを祈り、見守ることなのです。
Please keep in mind that as pastors are called and anointed by God to shepherd His flock (church), 牧師が神の群れ（教会）を牧するために神に召され、油注がれるように、
a king of Israel was called and anointed by God to shepherd His people. イスラエルの王も神の民を牧するために神に召され、油注がれたことを心にお留めください。
Please keep what we read in 1 Peter 5:1-4 in mind as we look at the life of King Saul. 第一ペテロ５章１節から４節に書かれていることを心に留めながら、サウル王の生涯を見てください。
Last Sunday, Pastor Okura talked about Samson. 先週の日曜日、大倉牧師はサムソンについて語りました。
As we have seen in looking at Samson a person who is mentioned in the hall of faith in Hebrews 11 who was not perfect by any means, ヘブル人への手紙１１章の信仰の殿堂に登場するサムソンは、決して完全な人物でなかったように、
we will see today in looking at Saul, a person who was chosen by God and anointed to be the first king of Israel who also was not perfect by any means. 今日、見ていく神に選ばれ、油注がれ、イスラエルの初代王となったサウルもまた決して完全ではありませんでした。
I hope you have come to realize through this message series on “Learning from People, How to Live with God”, この「人から学び、神と共に生きる方法」というメッセージシリーズを通して、
that the people of the Bible are not commended for being perfect but for having faith in God. 聖書の人々が称賛されるのは、完全であったからではなく、神への信仰を持っていたからだということを皆さんが悟ってくださることを願っています。
Which therefore reminds us as those who gather here to offer worship to God every Sunday, それゆえ、毎週日曜日にここに集まって神に礼拝をささげる私達は、
that we are here only by God’s mercy and His saving grace through faith in His Son Jesus Christ. 神の憐れみと御子イエス・キリストを信じる信仰による神の救いの恵みによってのみ、ここにいるのだということを思い起こさせるのです。
In studying these various people in the Bible, we are not here to be enamored by their goodness or be disgusted with their badness. 聖書に登場する様々な人々を学ぶ時、私達は彼らの善良さに魅了されたり、彼らの悪さに嫌悪感を抱いたりするためにここにいるのではありません。
In studying these various people in the Bible, we are humbled to find our own flaws and weaknesses in them, 聖書に登場する様々な人々を学ぶ時、私達は彼らの中に自分自身の欠点や弱点を見つけることにより謙虚にされ、
as well as to continually be reminded that God is good and worthy of our trust and obedience. また、神は善であり、私達の信頼と従順に値する方であることを絶えず思い起こさせられるのです。
Thus, as we look together at Saul, this morning, let us come with a heart to humbly learn how to live with God through his example. ですから、今朝、私達はサウルを共に見ながら、彼の姿を通して神と共に生きる方法を謙虚に学ぶ心を持っていきましょう。
The Times of the Judges officially came to an end when Saul was chosen by God to be the first king of Israel. サウルが神によってイスラエル初代の王に選ばれた時、士師記の時代は正式に終わりを告げました。
However, the spiritual climate of a nation of people does not change overnight, しかし、民族の精神的風土は一夜にして変わるものではないので、
so a leadership change did not necessarily bring on a change in the people’s attitudes toward God. 指導者が変わったからといって、人々の神に対する態度が変わるとは限りません。
Remember, as has been noted several times already in regards to the Times of the Judges: 士師記の時代については、既に何度か述べたとおりです：
Judges 17:6（士師記１７章６節）
In those days there was no king in Israel; every man did what was right in his own eyes. そのころイスラエルには王がなかったので、人々はおのおの自分たちの目に正しいと思うことを行った。
As we saw a few weeks back when we looked at Samuel, establishing a king over the people of Israel was not God’s ideal for them. 数週間前のサムエル記で見たように、イスラエルの民の上に王を立てることは神の理想ではありませんでした。
It was something that seemed right in their owns based on seeing the nations that surrounded them. それは、自分達を取り囲む国々を見て、彼らが正しいと思ったことだったのです。
1 Samuel 8:4-7（サムエル記上８章４節—７節）
4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah; 5 and they said to him, “Behold, you have grown old, and your sons do not walk in your ways. Now appoint a king for us to judge us like all the nations.” 6 But the thing was displeasing in the sight of Samuel when they said, “Give us a king to judge us.” And Samuel prayed to the Lord. 7 The Lord said to Samuel, “Listen to the voice of the people in regard to all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me from being king over them.” 4この時、イスラエルの長老たちはみな集まってラマにおるサムエルのもとにきて、5言った、「あなたは年老い、あなたの子たちはあなたの道を歩まない。今ほかの国々のように、われわれをさばく王を、われわれのために立ててください」。6しかし彼らが、「われわれをさばく王を、われわれに与えよ」と言うのを聞いて、サムエルは喜ばなかった。そしてサムエルが主に祈ると、7主はサムエルに言われた、「民が、すべてあなたに言う所の声に聞き従いなさい。彼らが捨てるのはあなたではなく、わたしを捨てて、彼らの上にわたしが王であることを認めないのである」。
Thus, we see that God allowed the people of Israel to have a king to rule over them. このように、神様はイスラエルの民が自分達を治める王を持つことを許されたことがわかります。
At the same time, God forewarned them of what it meant for them to live under the authority of a king. 同時に神様は彼らが王の権威の下に生きることの意味を警告されました。
He warned them that their sons and daughters as well as their best lands will be taken away to serve the king’s household and provide for the king’s officers and servants. 神様は彼らの息子や娘、そして最良の土地は王の家に仕えるために取られ、王の役人や召使いの養いのために与えられると警告したのです。
He warned them that the king will also collect taxes for himself and ultimately all of them will become his servants. また、王は自分のために税金を取り立て、最終的には全ての人が王の僕になると警告しました。
Worst of all, Samuel warned them that when they cry out to God because of what the king has imposed upon them, He will not answer them. 最悪なことにサムエルは、王が自分たちに課したことのゆえに神様に叫んでも、神様は答えてくださらないと警告しました。
Yet, the Bible says that the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel, and they demanded to have a king (1 Samuel 8:19). しかし聖書によれば、民はサムエルの声に耳を傾けず、王を持つことを求めたのです（サムエル記上８章１９節）。
Thus, the Lord told Samuel, “Listen to their voice and appoint them a king” (1 Samuel 8:22). それで、主はサムエルに言われた、「彼らの声に聞き従い、彼らのために王を立てよ」（サムエル記上８章２２節）。
And Saul was chosen by God to be the first king of Israel. こうしてサウルは神様によってイスラエルの最初の王に選ばれたのです。
How this all took place is recorded for us in 1 Samuel 9-11. この経緯はサムエル記上９章から１１章に記されています。
Saul is introduced as the son of Kish from the tribe of Benjamin. サウルはベニヤミン族のキシの子として紹介されています。
Regarding Saul’s physical attributes, this is how he is described: サウルの身体的特徴については、このように説明されています：
1 Samuel 9:2（サムエル記上９章２節）
a choice and handsome man, and there was not a more handsome person than he among the sons of Israel; from his shoulders and up he was taller than any of the people. 若くて麗しく、イスラエルの人々のうちに彼よりも麗しい人はなく、民のだれよりも肩から上、背が高かった。
If you wanted as a king, someone who was good looking and would literally stand out in a crowd, Saul was the prime candidate. 容姿端麗で、文字通り群衆の中で目立つ人物を王とするなら、サウルは最有力候補でした。
However, the king of Israel was not to be chosen by the people by way of a popularity contest. しかし、イスラエルの王は人気投票で民が選ぶものではありませんでした。
The choice was to be made by God and through His servant, Samuel, who was a priest, prophet, and judge, at that time. その選択は神様が、当時、祭司であり預言者であり裁判官であった神の僕、サムエルを通してなされることになっていました。
So, the choice of Saul becoming the first king of Israel was made known by God to Samuel before he even met Saul (1 Samuel 9:15-16). つまり、サウルがイスラエルの初代王になるという選択は、サムエルがサウルに会う前から神によって知られていたのです（サムエル記上９章１５節−１６節:）。
Saul’s encounter with Samuel goes like this . . . サウルとサムエルの出会いはこうでした。
Saul’s father Kish was a wealthy man who owned some donkeys. サウルの父キシは大金持ちで、ロバを数頭所有していました。
One day, those donkeys were lost, and Saul is told by his father to take one of the servants to go search for the donkeys. ある日、そのロバが行方不明になり、サウルは父親から、召使いの一人を連れてロバを探しに行くように言われます。
Saul and the servant go looking for the donkeys all over the place for quite some time but cannot find them. サウルと召使いはロバを探し回るが見つかりません。
As Saul contemplates returning back home, the servant tells him: サウルが家に戻ろうと考えていると、召使いが彼に言います：
1 Samuel 9:6（サムエル記上９章６節）
“Behold now, there is a man of God in this city, and the man is held in honor; all that he says surely comes true. Now let us go there, perhaps he can tell us about our journey on which we have set out.”「この町には神の人がおられます。尊い人で、その言われることはみなそのとおりになります。その所へ行きましょう。われわれの出てきた旅のことについて何か示されるでしょう」。
Saul then raises a concern about going to see Samuel empty handed (without an omiyage). するとサウルは、手ぶらで（お土産を持たずに）サムエルに会いに行くことに懸念を示します。
But the servant has some silver to give to Samuel, and so they go up to the city where Samuel is. しかし、僕はサムエルに渡す銀を持っていたので、二人はサムエルのいる町まで行きます。
As they came into the city, Samuel came out toward them as he made his way up to the high place to bless the sacrifice offering to God. 町に入ると、サムエルは神に捧げる生贄を祝福するために高台に上って、彼らのほうに出てきました。
Samuel welcomed Saul, invited him to join him for a meal, and assured him that the lost donkeys have been found. サムエルはサウルを歓迎し、食事に招き、失われたロバが見つかったことを告げました。
Samuel treated Saul with honor by placing him at the head of those who were invited to the meal. サムエルはサウルを食事に招かれた人々の先に立たせ、丁重にもてなしました。
Samuel proceeded to talk with Saul privately, and after having sent the servant to go ahead of him, he poured oil upon Saul’s head, kissed him and said: サムエルはサウルと個人的に話を進め、僕を先に行かせた後、サウルの頭に油を注ぎ、接吻して言いました：
“Has not the Lord anointed you a ruler over His inheritance? (1 Samuel 10:1)「主はあなたに油を注いで、その民イスラエルの君とされたではありませんか」。（サムエル記上１０章１節）
Thus, Saul became the Lord’s anointed king to rule over His inheritance, that is Israel. こうしてサウルは、主の嗣業であるイスラエルを治める、主の油注がれた王となりました。
Samuel then told Saul of three specific things that will occur to him as signs that would confirm his calling and anointing to be the king of Israel. サムエルはサウルに、彼がイスラエルの王として召され、油注がれたことを確認するしるしとして、彼に起こる３つの具体的なことを告げます。
And they happened right away, for it says: そして、それらはすぐに起こったのです：
1 Samuel 10:9-11（サムエル記上１０章９節—１１節）
9 Then it happened when he turned his back to leave Samuel, God changed his heart; and all those signs came about on that day. 10 When they came to the hill there, behold, a group of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him mightily, so that he prophesied among them. 11 It came about, when all who knew him previously saw that he prophesied now with the prophets, that the people said to one another, “What has happened to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?” 9サウルが背をかえしてサムエルを離れたとき、神は彼に新しい心を与えられた。これらのしるしは皆その日に起った。10彼らはギベアにきた時、預言者の一群に出会った。そして神の霊が、はげしくサウルの上に下り、彼は彼らのうちにいて預言した。11もとからサウルを知っていた人々はみな、サウルが預言者たちと共に預言するのを見て互に言った、「キシの子に何事が起ったのか。サウルもまた預言者たちのうちにいるのか」。
Thereafter Samuel called the people together to the Lord at Mizpah, and the Lord chose Saul as king. その後、サムエルはミヅパで民を主のもとに呼び集め、主はサウルを王に選ばれました。
The manner in which this was done is recorded in this manner.その方法がこう記録されています。
1 Samuel 10:20-26（サムエル記上１０章２０節—２６節）
20 Thus Samuel brought all the tribes of Israel near, and the tribe of Benjamin was taken by lot. 21 Then he brought the tribe of Benjamin near by its families, and the Matrite family was taken. And Saul the son of Kish was taken; but when they looked for him, he could not be found. 22 Therefore they inquired further of the Lord, “Has the man come here yet?” So the Lord said, “Behold, he is hiding himself by the baggage.” 23 So they ran and took him from there, and when he stood among the people, he was taller than any of the people from his shoulders upward. 24 Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see him whom the Lord has chosen? Surely there is no one like him among all the people.” So all the people shouted and said, “Long live the king!” 25 Then Samuel told the people the ordinances of the kingdom, and wrote them in the book and placed it before the Lord. And Samuel sent all the people away, each one to his house. 26 Saul also went to his house at Gibeah; and the valiant men whose hearts God had touched went with him. 20こうしてサムエルがイスラエルのすべての部族を呼び寄せた時、ベニヤミンの部族が、くじに当った。 21またベニヤミンの部族をその氏族にしたがって呼び寄せた時、マテリの氏族が、くじに当り、マテリの氏族を人ごとに呼び寄せた時、キシの子サウルが、くじに当った。しかし人々が彼を捜した時、見つからなかった。22そこでまた主に「その人はここにきているのですか」と問うと、主は言われた、「彼は荷物の間に隠れている」。23人々は走って行って、彼をそこから連れてきた。彼は民の中に立ったが、肩から上は、民のどの人よりも高かった。24サムエルはすべての民に言った、「主が選ばれた人をごらんなさい。民のうちに彼のような人はないではありませんか」。民はみな「王万歳」と叫んだ。25その時サムエルは王国のならわしを民に語り、それを書にしるして、主の前におさめた。こうしてサムエルはすべての民をそれぞれ家に帰らせた。26サウルもまたギベアにある彼の家に帰った。そして神にその心を動かされた勇士たちも彼と共に行った。
It is interesting to see how Saul who was so tall was able to hide himself behind some baggage. あれほど背の高かったサウルが、荷物の陰に身を隠すことができたのは興味深いことです。
We don’t know if he was being humble or he was afraid. 謙遜だったのか、恐れていたのかは分かりません。
Regardless, Saul was publicly recognized before the people as their king. いずれにせよ、こうしてサウルは民の前で公に王として認められたのです。
And God moved the hearts of some valiant men to follow and serve Saul. そして神様は、サウルに従い仕える勇敢な者たちの心を動かされました。
Soon thereafter, Saul is told of the Ammonites besieging the people of Jabesh-gilead. その直後、サウルはアンモン人がヤベシ・ギレアドの人々を包囲していることを知らされます。
Saul then sends word throughout the territory of Israel by the hand of messengers to follow him and Samuel into battle against the Ammonites. そこでサウルは、使者たちによってイスラエルの全土に、彼とサムエルに従ってアンモン人との戦いに向かうようにと知らせを送ります。
Three hundred thirty thousand men; 300,000 from the sons of Israel and 30,000 men of Judah answered the call.この呼びかけに対して、イスラエルの子３０万人とユダの男３万人の計３３万人が呼びかけに応じました。
The next morning Saul led the Israelites into the midst of the camp of the Ammonites and defeated them. 翌朝、サウルはイスラエルの民を率いてアモン人の陣営の真ん中に入り、彼らを打ち破りました。
Afterwards, Saul gave glory to God for the victory, acknowledging that it was the Lord who had accomplished deliverance in Israel. その後、サウルは勝利の栄光を神に捧げ、イスラエルに解放を成し遂げたのは主であることを認めました。
1 Samuel 11:14-15（サムエル記上１１章１４節—１５節）
14 Then Samuel said to the people, “Come and let us go to Gilgal and renew the kingdom there.” 15 So all the people went to Gilgal, and there they made Saul king before the Lord in Gilgal. There they also offered sacrifices of peace offerings before the Lord; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly. 14そこでサムエルは民に言った、「さあ、ギルガルへ行って、あそこで王国を一新しよう」。 15こうして民はみなギルガルへ行って、その所で主の前にサウルを王とし、酬恩祭を主の前にささげ、サウルとイスラエルの人々は皆、その所で大いに祝った。
Saul was thirty years old when he began to reign as the king of Israel, and he reigned for forty-two years. サウルがイスラエルの王として君臨し始めたのは３０歳の時で、彼は４２年間、君臨しました。
However, Saul’s reign was filled with many troubles because of his lack of love for God and his distrust of the godly men that surrounded him. しかし、サウルの治世は、神様への愛の欠如と、彼を取り巻く敬虔深い人々への不信のために、多くの問題で満ちていました。
This caused Saul to turn away from following God’s commandments and basically drive himself to madness. そのため、サウルは神の戒めに従うことから離れ、基本的に自らを狂気へと追いやっていきました。
At the start of his reign as king, he was closely tied to Samuel. 王としての治世の初め、彼はサムエルと密接に結びついていました。
Even as Saul called the people to gather and went out into battle, Samuel would accompany him. サウルが民を召集し、戦いに出かけるときも、サムエルは彼に付き添っていたのです。
At such called meetings where the people were gathered, Samuel was in charge of the religious ceremony, while Saul was in charge of the military aspects of preparing for the battle. 民が召集される集会では、サムエルが宗教儀式を担当し、サウルは戦いに備える軍事面を担当していました。
However, Saul’s relationship with Samuel started to deteriorate after one particular incident. しかし、サウルとサムエルの関係は、ある出来事を境に悪化し始めたのです。
This incident is recorded in 1 Samuel 13. その出来事はサムエル記上１３章に記されています。
Saul had summoned the people to Gilgal after his son Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba. サウルは息子のヨナタンがゲバにいたペリシテ人の守備隊を打ち破った後、民をギルガルに呼び寄せました。
In response to this, the Philistines assembled to fight with Israel. これに対して、ペリシテ人はイスラエルと戦うために集まりました。
They came with 30,000 chariots and 6,000 horsemen, and many more people. 彼らは３万の戦車と６千の騎兵、さらに多くの民を引き連れて来ました。
The men of Israel who saw these Philistines hid themselves in caves, in thickets, in cliffs, in cellars, and in pits. ペリシテ人を見たイスラエルの人々は洞窟、茂み、崖、地下室、穴の中に身を隠しました。
And some of them went to lands further away. そのうちのある者は、さらに遠くの土地に逃げました。
Those who remained were trembling, while waiting for Samuel to come offer a burnt offering and peace offerings on behalf of the people to God. 残った者たちは震えながら、サムエルが民を代表して燔祭と平和の供え物を神に捧げに来るのを待っていたのです。
However, Saul, not being able to wait any longer for Samuel who was delayed in coming at the appointed time, offered the burnt offering himself. しかし、サウルは、約束の時間に来るのが遅れたサムエルを待つことができず、自分で燔祭を捧げました。
Samuel came right after Saul had finished offering the burnt offering, and questioned Saul why he had done so. サムエルは、サウルが燔祭を捧げ終わった直後にやって来て、サウルにその理由を問いただしました。
Saul basically said that he saw that the people were scattering from him, so he forced himself to offer the burnt offering. サウルは基本的に民が自分から離れて散っていくのを見て、無理に焼き尽くす献げ物を捧げたと言いました。
Here is what Samuel said to Saul in response to this: これに対してサムエルがサウルに言った言葉がこれです：
1 Samuel 13:13-14（サムエル記上１３章１３節—１４節）
“You have acted foolishly; you have not kept the commandment of the Lord your God, which He commanded you, for now the Lord would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. 14 But now your kingdom shall not endure. The Lord has sought out for Himself a man after His own heart, and the Lord has appointed him as ruler over His people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.”「あなたは愚かなことをした。あなたは、あなたの神、主の命じられた命令を守らなかった。もし守ったならば、主は今あなたの王国を長くイスラエルの上に確保されたであろう。14しかし今は、あなたの王国は続かないであろう。主は自分の心にかなう人を求めて、その人に民の君となることを命じられた。あなたが主の命じられた事を守らなかったからである」。
The main issue with Saul was that he did not keep what the Lord commanded him to do. サウルの主な問題は、主が命じられたことを守らなかったことでした。
In other words, Saul’s primary issue was disobedience toward God, his Lord, the King of kings. 言い換えれば、サウルの主な問題は主であり、王の王である神への不従順だったのです。
A similar situation took place during another war which was against the Amalekites. 同じような状況は、アマレク人との戦いでも起こりました。
Before going to war, Samuel said the following things to Saul: 出征前、サムエルはサウルに次のように言いました：
1 Samuel 15:1-3（サムエル記上１５章１節—３節）
“The Lord sent me to anoint you as king over His people, over Israel; now therefore, listen to the words of the Lord. 2 Thus says the Lord of hosts, ‘I will punish Amalek for what he did to Israel, how he set himself against him on the way while he was coming up from Egypt. 3 Now go and strike Amalek and utterly destroy all that he has, and do not spare him; but put to death both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’” 1さて、サムエルはサウルに言った、「主は、わたしをつかわし、あなたに油をそそいで、その民イスラエルの王とされました。それゆえ、今、主の言葉を聞きなさい。2万軍の主は、こう仰せられる、『わたしは、アマレクがイスラエルにした事、すなわちイスラエルがエジプトから上ってきた時、その途中で敵対したことについて彼らを罰するであろう。3今、行ってアマレクを撃ち、そのすべての持ち物を滅ぼしつくせ。彼らをゆるすな。男も女も、幼な子も乳飲み子も、牛も羊も、らくだも、ろばも皆、殺せ』」。
After this, Saul led 210,000 men to fight against the Amalekites, and he completely defeated them. この後、サウルは２１万の兵を率いてアマレク人と戦い、彼らを完全に打ち破りました。
However, he and the people spared Agag the king of the Amalekites and did not destroy the best of the sheep, the oxen, the fatlings and the lambs. しかし、彼と民はアマレク人の王アガグを惜しみ、羊、牛、肥えた子羊、子羊のうち最も良いものを滅ぼさなかったのです。
Seeing this, the word of the Lord came to Samuel, saying, これを見て、主の言葉がサムエルに臨みました、

This distressed Samuel and he cried out to the Lord all night, and then arose early in the morning to meet Saul. サムエルはこのことに心を痛め、一晩中主に叫び続け、朝早く起きてサウルに会います。
Samuel confronts Saul right away regarding his disobedience in not utterly destroying all of the animals of the Amalekites. サムエルはサウルに、アマレク人の家畜を全滅させなかった不従順について、すぐに詰め寄ります。
Saul explains that the people brought back the animals to sacrifice them to God. サウルは、人々は神に生贄を捧げるために動物を持ち帰ったのだと説明します。
But Samuel rebukes Saul harshly with the following words: しかし、サムエルはこのような言葉でサウルを厳しく叱責しました：

“Has the Lord as much delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed than the fat of rams. 23 “For rebellion is as the sin of divination, and insubordination is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, He has also rejected you from being king.”「主はそのみ言葉に聞き従う事を喜ばれるように、燔祭や犠牲を喜ばれるであろうか。見よ、従うことは犠牲にまさり、聞くことは雄羊の脂肪にまさる。23そむくことは占いの罪に等しく、強情は偶像礼拝の罪に等しいからである。あなたが主のことばを捨てたので、主もまたあなたを捨てて、王の位から退けられた」。
After that day, Samuel did not see Saul again until the day of his death. その日以降、サムエルは死ぬまでサウルに会うことはありませんでした。
Saul had lost his close friend and mentor Samuel because he didn’t love God completely enough to obey Him. サウルが親友であり師であったサムエルを失ったのは、彼が神様を完全に愛して神様に従わなかったからです。
Instead, he feared the people and chose to please the people rather than God. そのかわりに民を恐れ、神よりも民を喜ばせることを選んだのです。
In King Saul, we see a person who started off with great promise but sadly ended up in utter disgrace. 大きな将来性を持って出発したものの、悲しいことに全くの不名誉に終わったサウル王という人物を私達はここに見ることができます。
For after this, his life spirals out of control. この後、彼の人生は制御不能に陥っていくからです。
I mentioned earlier that Saul’s reign was filled with many troubles because of his lack of love for God and his distrust of the godly men that surrounded him. サウルの治世は、神様への愛の欠如と、彼を取り巻く敬虔な人々への不信のために、多くの問題に満ちていたことは先に述べました。
Besides Samuel who God had blessed Saul with, God had blessed him with a godly son in Jonathan and a godly son-in-law in David. 神様がサウルに祝福を与えたサムエルの他に、神様はヨナタンという敬虔な息子とダビデという敬虔な婿によってサウルを祝福しました。
Because of time, I will not go into Saul’s relationship with Jonathan and David in detail, 時間の関係で、サウルとヨナタン、ダビデの関係については詳しく触れませんが、
but because of his jealousy and hatred toward David, Saul tried to kill both David and Jonathan. ダビデに対する嫉妬と憎しみのために、サウルはダビデとヨナタンを殺そうとしました。
Saul was driven to madness towards the end of his life, and he died a most tragic death. サウルは生涯の終わりに狂気に追い込まれ、最も悲劇的な死を遂げたのです。
So, what can we learn from Saul’s life? では、私達はサウルの生涯から何を学ぶことができるでしょうか？
Physically speaking, Saul was tall. 肉体的に言えば、サウルは背が高かったのです。
However, spiritually speaking, Saul was small. しかし、霊的に言えば、サウルは小さかったのです。
Early on, Saul was not a proud man, but was ready to admit his unimportance, because his tribe, Benjamin, was insignificant. 当初、サウルは傲慢な人間ではなく、自分の部族であるベニヤミンは取るに足らない存在であったため、自分の重要性の低さを認めようとしていました。
Saul was attentive to Samuel’s early instructions and his heart was changed under the influence of the Spirit of God. サウルはサムエルの初期の指示に注意深く耳を傾け、神の霊の影響を受けて心が変えられました。
However, the success which God gave Saul in political and military affairs made him more arrogant, distrusting of others, and rash in his decision-making. しかし、神様がサウルに政治的・軍事的な成功を与えたことで、サウルは傲慢になり、他者不信に陥り、軽率な決断をするようになりました。
Sadly, instead of the good Spirit of God, an evil spirit took over in Saul’s life, and a fearful depression repeatedly seized him. 悲しいことに、サウルの人生には神の良き霊の代わりに悪霊が乗り移り、恐ろしいデプレッションに何度も襲われたのです。
The key verse for Saul’s life was what God spoke through Samuel to him in 1 Samuel 15:22-23. サウルの人生にとって重要な聖句は、サムエル記上１５章２２節から２３節で神様がサムエルを通して彼に語られたことです。
1 Samuel 15:22-23（サムエル記上１５章２２節—２３節）
“Has the Lord as much delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Through these verses, God makes it very clear that He desires our obedience. これらの聖句を通して、神様は私達の従順を望んでおられることを明確にしています。
He makes it clear that for us to obey Him is better than offering sacrifices to him. 私達が神に従うことは、神にいけにえを捧げることよりも良いことなのです。
In fact, He says that to disobey Him, that is, to rebel against Him, is as the sin of divination. 実際、神に従わないこと、つまり神に反抗することは、占いの罪と同じだと言われています。
Disobeying God is like the sin of witchcraft or seeking evil spirits. 神に逆らうことは、魔術や悪霊を求める罪と同じなのです。
It is also likened to idolatry.また、偶像礼拝にも似ています。
Interestingly, toward the very end of Saul’s life, when he was faced with the threat of the Philistines in warfare, 興味深いことに、サウルの生涯の最後の頃、ペリシテ人の脅威と戦いに直面したとき、
instead of humbly turning to God in desperation, he sought out a woman who was a medium in a place called En-dor. サウルは絶望して神にへりくだるのではなく、エンドルという場所に霊媒師の女性を探し求めたのです。
Saul asks the woman to call up the dead spirit of Samuel, so as to seek his counsel. サウルはその女に、サムエルの死んだ霊を呼び出して、彼の助言を求めるように頼みました。
This in itself shows that Saul truly lacked a loving relationship with God. このこと自体、サウルが神との愛に満ちた関係を本当に欠いていたことを示しています。
For rather than going straight to God, he was hoping to receive counsel from a man of God who was dead. なぜなら、彼は神に直談判するのではなく、死んだ神の人から助言を受けることを望んでいたからです。
Now, let us think more in detail of the difference between obedience and sacrifice. さて、従順と犠牲の違いについてもっと詳しく考えてみましょう。
Let us think of these two things in the context of relationships. この二つのことを人間関係の中で考えてみましょう。
When you come to the worship service every Sunday morning, are you thinking to yourself, “Wow, what a sacrifice I am making in coming to offer worship to God”? 毎週日曜日の朝、礼拝に来る時、皆さんは「神に礼拝を捧げに来るなんて、私はなんという犠牲を払っているのだろう」と思っているでしょうか。
I would like to think that is not the case. そうではないと思いたいです。
Most likely you come to the worship service every Sunday morning out of a love for God ほとんどの場合、あなたは神への愛ゆえに毎週日曜日の朝に礼拝に来ているのであり、
which allows you to freely come in obedience to God’s will for us to worship Him and not forsake assembling together. その愛ゆえに、神を礼拝し、集うことをやめないでほしいという神の御心に従って自由に礼拝に来ているのである。
Based on a loving relationship with God, we are able to joyfully obey Him. 神との愛の関係に基づいて、私たちは喜んで神に従うことができるのです。
However, if obedience is seen as a religious obligation like offering a sacrifice, it will seem like a chore. しかし、もし従順が生贄を捧げるような宗教的な義務とみなされるなら、それは面倒なことのように思えるでしょう。
If you are finding it difficult to obey God, then I would like to challenge you to reevaluate your relationship with God. もし、あなたが神に従うことが難しいと感じているのなら、神との関係を見直すことにチャレンジしていただきたいと思います。
For Jesus said to His disciples, なぜなら、イエス様は弟子たちにこう言われました。
“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” (John 14:15)「もしあなたがたがわたしを愛するならば、わたしのいましめを守るべきである」。（ヨハネ１４章１５節）
And we know that Jesus obeyed His Heavenly Father because of His love for Him. そして私達はイエス様が天の父への愛のゆえに従われたことを知っています。
For “Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” (Philippians 2:8) その有様は人と異ならず、おのれを低くして、死に至るまで、しかも十字架の死に至るまで従順であられた。（ピリピ２章７節、８節）
In Jesus’ case, His humble obedience to the Heavenly Father led to His sacrificial death. イエス様の場合、天の父への謙虚な従順が犠牲の死につながったのです。
We must remember that obedience may lead to sacrifice but sacrifice is not always obedience. 私達は従順が犠牲につながることはあっても、犠牲が必ずしも従順であるとは限らないことを覚えておかなければなりません。
As I circle back around to what I read at the beginning of this message, that is 1 Peter 5:1-4, このメッセージの冒頭で読んだこと、つまりペテロ第一の手紙５章１節から４節に戻ると、
we see that Saul did not shepherd the flock, that is God’s inheritance, Israel, according to the will of God. サウロは神の嗣業であるイスラエルの群れを、神のみ心に従って牧さなかったことが分かります。
Instead, he did the very thing that he was not supposed to do. その代わりに、彼はしてはならないことをしました。
He lorded himself over those allotted to his charge, and was not a very good example to them. サウルは、自分に割り当てられた者たちに威張り散らし、彼らにとってあまり良い模範とはならなかったのです。
He forgot that he had a Chief Shepherd, the King of kings, that he was to ultimately serve, even as he led and cared for the people of Israel. 彼はイスラエルの民を導き世話する時でさえ、最終的に仕えるべき王の王である羊飼いの長がいることを忘れていました。
He forgot that he himself was a sheep that needed to follow and obey the commands of his Good Shepherd. 彼は自分自身が良い羊飼いの命令に従わなければならない羊であることを忘れていたのです。
Again, the key to humble obedience is a loving relationship. 繰り返しますが、謙虚な従順の鍵は、愛に満ちた関係にあります。
I find the following quote by Christian apologist Josh McDowell helpful: キリスト教の擁護論者ジョシュ・マクダウェルの次の言葉が参考になります：
“Rules without relationship leads to rebellion.” 「関係なき規則は反抗につながる」
In other words, without a loving relationship, it is difficult to obey rules. 言い換えれば、愛情ある関係がなければ、規則に従うことは難しいということです。
I believe that Saul did not have a very close relationship with God. 私は、サウロは神とあまり親密な関係を持っていなかったと思います。
And because of this, he was prone to do things his own way rather than to seek to do things according to God’s way. そのため、神の道に従って物事を行おうとするよりも、自分のやり方で物事を行おうとする傾向がありました。
Do you truly love God? Are you growing more and more in your love for God? あなたは本当に神様を愛していますか？ 神様への愛をますます深めていますか？
Do you truly know that you are loved by God? Are you growing more and more in your understanding of God’s love for you? あなたは神様に愛されていることを本当に知っていますか？ 神様の愛を理解して、ますます成長していますか？
I believe that the more our relationship with God becomes intimate, the more easily we can humbly and joyfully obey Him. 神様との関係が親密になればなるほど、私達は謙虚に喜んで神に従うことができるようになると私は信じています。
If your love for God is weak right now, then I encourage you to repent, and humbly seek God’s help out of a desperate desire to be drawn closer to Him. もし今、神様への愛が弱いのであれば、悔い改めて、神に近づきたいという切実な願いから、謙虚に神様の助けを求めることをお勧めします。
The true sacrifice that God desires of us is not based on offering up material goods but our very hearts to Him. 神様が私達に求める真の犠牲とは、物質的なものを捧げることではなく、私達の心そのものを神様に捧げることなのです。
What Saul as the first king of Israel did not realize, David the second king of Israel did. イスラエルの初代の王サウルが気づかなかったことを、イスラエルの２代目の王ダビデは悟りました。
And he wrote the following after he disobeyed God and sought God’s forgiveness and a right relationship with Him. そして彼は、神様に背き、神様の赦しと神との正しい関係を求めた後、次のように記しています。
Psalm 51:17（詩篇５１篇１７節）
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise. 神の受けられるいけにえは砕けた魂です。神よ、あなたは砕けた悔いた心をかろしめられません。
As Samson, cried out to God just before he was to die, “Sovereign LORD, remember me.”, サムソンが死ぬ直前に神に向かって「主よ、私を思い出してください」と叫んだように、
if Saul had done the same, I am sure that God would have remembered Saul as His anointed king of Israel and reminded Saul of His love for him. もしサウルが同じことをしたなら、神様はサウルをイスラエルの油注がれた王として思い出し、サウルに神様の愛を思い出させたに違いない。
Let us not take for granted the love and kindness of God, who desires for us to obey Him at all times. 私達がいつでも神に従うことを望んでおられる神の愛と優しさを、当然のことと思わないようにしましょう。
In good times and bad times. In times of strength and in times of weakness. 良い時も悪い時も。 強い時も弱い時も。
In times when we are doing well as a Christian, and in times when we are not. クリスチャンとしてうまくいっている時も、そうでない時も。
Let us remember that we have a Chief Shepherd that is always looking out for us and is ready to rescue us. 私達にはいつも私達を見守っていて、救い出してくれる羊飼いの長がいることを思い出しましょう。
In His arms and in His care, He will lead us in His everlasting way. 主の腕の中で、主の配慮の中で、主は私達を永遠の道へと導いてくださるのです。
So, let us rest in His love, and continue to love and obey Him.だから、主の愛に安らぎ、主を愛し、従い続けましょう。
