Martha: Learning to Listen to Jesus
マルタ：イエスに耳を傾けることを学ぶ

This afternoon, millions and possibly more than a billion people worldwide will be watching the Super Bowl.　 本日午後、世界中で数百万、おそらく１０億人以上がスーパーボウルを観戦します。

Some of you may be planning to watch the game at a watch party at a friend’s house.　    　　友人宅での観戦パーティーで試合を見る予定の方もいらっしゃるでしょう。

The host of such a party can be quite busy getting snacks and drinks ready for the guests.　    そのようなパーティーの主催者は、ゲスト用に軽食や飲み物を準備するのに大忙しです。

Here in our church, we will enjoy our own Souper Bowl lunch after this worship service.　 　　 当教会では、礼拝後に「スーパボウル」ランチを楽しみます。

And many of you were probably quite busy preparing the hot and delicious soups that we will be enjoying for this lunch.　 皆さんの中にも、このランチで味わう温かくて美味しいスープの準備に忙しかった方が多いでしょう。

All these busy preparations bring to mind a certain woman in the Bible.　 　　　　　　　　 　こうした慌ただしい準備は、聖書に登場する、ある女性を思い出させます。

Her name is Martha.　 その名前はマルタです。

Today, we will look at Martha and her relationship with Jesus.　 今日はこのマルタとイエス様との関係について見ていきましょう。

We will begin by looking at Jesus’ visit to Martha’s home recorded for us in Luke 10.　 まず、ルカによる福音書10章に記されている、イエス様がマルタの家を訪れた出来事から始めましょう。

Luke 10:38-42（ルカの福音書１０章３８～４２節）

³⁸ Now as they were traveling along, He entered a village; and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. ³⁹ She had a sister called Mary, who was seated at the Lord’s feet, listening to His word. ⁴⁰ But Martha was distracted with all her preparations; and she came up to Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me.” ⁴¹ But the Lord answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; ⁴² but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” ³⁸一同が旅を続けているうちに、イエスがある村へはいられた。するとマルタという名の女がイエスを家に迎え入れた。³⁹この女にマリヤという妹がいたが、主の足もとにすわって、御言に聞き入っていた。⁴⁰ところが、マルタは接待のことで忙がしくて心をとりみだし、イエスのところにきて言った、「主よ、妹がわたしだけに接待をさせているのを、なんともお思いになりませんか。わたしの手伝いをするように妹におっしゃってください」。⁴¹主は答えて言われた、「マルタよ、マルタよ、あなたは多くのことに心を配って思いわずらっている。⁴²しかし、無くてならぬものは多くはない。いや、一つだけである。マリヤはその良い方を選んだのだ。そしてそれは、彼女から取り去ってはならないものである」。

We see here the occasion of Jesus’ visit to a certain village where two sisters, Martha and Mary, lived.　 ここにはイエス様が、とある村を訪れた場面が描かれています。その村にはマルタとマリアという二人の姉妹が住んでいました。

Jesus was traveling along with His disciples going all over Israel to proclaim repentance and the kingdom of God.　 イエス様は弟子たちと共にイスラエル中を巡り、悔い改めと神の国を宣べ伝えていました。

Jesus came into this particular home because He was welcomed there.　 イエス様がこの家に入ったのは、歓迎されたからです。

As Martha is named here first, she must have been the head of this household.　 マルタが先に名指しされていることから、彼女がこの家の主だったと考えられます。

Martha’s sister Mary is mentioned as well.　マルタの妹マリアについても言及されています。

Right away, we see what kind of person Mary was, for it is recorded that she “was seated at the Lord’s feet, listening to His word.” すぐに、私たちはマリアがどんな人物であったのかが分かります。なぜなら、彼女は「主の足もとにすわって、御言に聞き入っていた」からです。

Mary was an attentive person, who cherished sitting at Jesus’ feet to listen to Him speak.　    マリアは注意深い人であり、イエス様の足元に座ってその話を聞くことを大切にしていました。

In biblical times, sitting at someone’s feet was a posture of learning, submission, and discipleship.　 聖書の時代において、誰かの足元に座ることは、学び、従順、そして弟子としての姿勢を示すものでした。

Thus, it showed Mary’s humility and eagerness to learn from Jesus.　 したがって、それはマリアの謙虚さと、イエス様から学びたいという熱意を示していました。

We also see what kind of person Martha was, for it is recorded that she “was distracted with all her preparations.” また、マルタがどのような人物であったかも分かります。なぜなら、彼女は「接待のことで忙しくて心をとりみだしていた」と記されているからです。

Matha was an active, detail-oriented person, who probably ran the affairs of her household well.マルタは活発で細やかな人柄であり、おそらく家庭の仕事をうまくこなしていました。

In Japanese terms, she was a true 日本語において、彼女は本当にお姉さん (onei-san)でした。

As the oldest, or older sister, she was probably given the responsibility to care for the rest of the family members, 長女、あるいは姉として、彼女は家族全員の世話役を任されていたのでしょう。

as there is no mention of parents being at home with them.　両親が家にいるという記述がないことからそう推測されます。

Martha welcomed Jesus into “her home”, and she was doing her best to be a good host.　 　マルタはイエス様を「自分の家」に迎え入れ、最善を尽くして良いもてなしをしようとしていました。

Thus, she was fully involved in all “her preparations” to host Jesus.　 したがって、彼女はイエス様をもてなすための「準備」に完全に没頭していました。

Perhaps in being overwhelmed with all the preparations, Martha came up to Jesus to ask Him to have her sister Mary help her out.　 おそらく準備に追われていたマルタは、妹のマリヤに手伝いを頼むようイエス様に願い出たのでしょう。

However, her words came out somewhat harshly, expressing her frustration:　 しかし、その彼女の言葉はややきつい口調で、苛立ちを表していました：

“Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me.” 「主よ、妹がわたしだけに接待をさせているのを、なんともお思いになりませんか。わたしの手伝いをするように妹におっしゃってください」。

Perhaps Martha wanted to spend time with Jesus as well, to sit and listen to Him.　 おそらくマルタもイエス様と共に座って、その話を聞いて過ごしたかったのでしょう、

However, she got “distracted with all her preparations.” しかし、彼女は接待が忙がしくて心をとりみだしていたのです。

Interesting choice of words here.　 興味深い言葉の選びがここにはあります。

“Distracted” is seen as a negative action versus being “focused” in doing something.　 「とりみだしている」とは、何かを行う際に「集中している」状態と対比される否定的な行動と見なされます。

So, we are left to wonder:  What was Martha supposed to focus on doing?　 そこで疑問が残ります：マルタは何に集中すべきだったのでしょうか？

When we ask this question, then we can better appreciate Jesus’ response to Martha.　この問いを投げかけることで、イエス様がマルタに示した応答をより深く理解できるでしょう。

But the Lord answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and bothered about so many things; but only one thing is necessary, for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” 主は答えて言われた、「マルタよ、マルタよ、あなたは多くのことに心を配って思いわずらっている。しかし、無くてならぬものは多くはない。いや、一つだけである。マリヤはその良い方を選んだのだ。そしてそれは、彼女から取り去ってはならないものである」。

Jesus calling out to Martha two times shows how truly distracted she was.　 イエス様がマルタを二度呼びかけたことは、彼女がどれほど気が散っていたかを示しています。

Jesus also addressed Martha’s state of mind in doing all her preparations: “You are worried and bothered about so many things.” イエス様はまた、マルタが彼女の準備に追われる心境について「あなたは多くのことに心を配って思いわずらっている」とも言及しました。

I cannot imagine the menu that Martha prepared for entertaining Jesus and His disciples on that day.　 その日、マルタがイエス様と弟子たちをもてなすために用意したメニューは想像もつきません。

It must have been quite exquisite and it must have been a lot for her alone to handle.　 それはきっと非常に洗練されたもので、彼女一人ではとても対応しきれないほどの量だったに違いありません。

To Martha’s concern over these many things, Jesus quieted her heart by saying: “but only one thing is necessary.” 多くのことに心を乱していたマルタに、イエス様はこう言って心を静めました。「しかし、無くてならぬものは多くはない。いや、一つだけである」。

What was that one thing?　その一つとは何だったのでしょうか？

Jesus continued on: “for Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”イエス様は続けて「マリヤはその良い方を選んだのだ。そしてそれは、彼女から取り去ってはならないものである」と言いました。

What exactly was Mary doing?　 マリヤは一体何をしていたのでしょうか？

She was seated at the Lord’s feet, listening to His word.　彼女は主の足元に座り、主の御言葉を聞いていたのです。

So, we see here the great importance of being still and to listen to Jesus.　 ここで私たちは、静まり、イエス様の御言葉に耳を傾けることの重要性を知ります。

The importance of this is highlighted for us in James 1:19-20 where it says:　 この重要性はヤコブの手紙1章19-20節で強調されています。そこにはこう記されているのです：

¹⁹ This you know, my beloved brethren. But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger; ²⁰ for the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God. ¹⁹愛する兄弟たちよ。このことを知っておきなさい。人はすべて、聞くに早く、語るにおそく、怒るにおそくあるべきである。²⁰人の怒りは、神の義を全うするものではないからである。

The quick to hear that is mentioned in James 1:19, has to do with being quick to hear God’s voice (words).　 ヤコブの手紙1章19節に記されている「聞くことに速い」とは、神の御声（御言葉）を速やかに聞くことに関係します。

Thus, we are exhorted here to particularly be attentive to listen to God, したがって、ここで特に勧められているのは、神様に耳を傾けることに注意を払うことです。

which is something Mary was doing by sitting at Jesus’ feet and listening to His words.　これは、マリアがイエス様の足元に座り、その言葉に耳を傾けていた行為そのものです。

At the same time, we are exhorted to be slow to speak and slow to anger, which is something that in that particular moment Martha could not do.　 同時に、私たちは「口を慎み、怒りに遅くあれ」とも勧められています。これは、あの特定の瞬間においてマルタができなかったことです。

However, I don’t believe that Jesus was being particularly harsh towards Martha.しかし、イエス様がマルタに対して特に厳しい態度を取っていたと私は思いません。

His words to Martha were not a reprimand as much as a kind reminder to her of the importance of focusing on Him and His words rather than all of her preparations.　 マルタへの主の言葉は、叱責というよりは、彼女が準備にばかり気を取られるのではなく、主ご自身とその言葉に集中することの重要性を優しく思い出させるものでした。

When I think of a wonderful example of Christ-focused hosting, I think of the Wednesday Night Dinners hosted by Duncan and Yuki Woo.　 キリストを中心としたもてなしの素晴らしい例として思い浮かぶのは、ダンカンとユキ・ウー夫妻が主催する水曜夜の夕食会です。

I know that they expend a lot of time and energy and resources to host dinners at their home every Wednesday night.　 毎週水曜の夜、自宅で夕食会を開くために彼らが多くの時間と労力、資材を費やしていることを承知しています。

However, no matter how busy they may be in preparing the meal, they are never too busy in hosting the dinner.　 しかし、食事の準備でどれほど忙しくても、夕食会そのものをもてなすことに忙しすぎるということは決してありません。

When it is time to eat the dinner, usually Duncan prays for the meal (sometimes, he asks me to pray), 食事の時間になると、通常ダンカンが食前の祈りを捧げます（時には私に祈りを頼むこともあります）。

and once everyone gets in line to eat, Duncan and Yuki are talking with everyone there.　そして皆が食事の列に並ぶと、ダンカンとユキはそこにいる全員と会話を交わします。

Their focus is not on the food.　 彼らの焦点は食事そのものにはありません。

Their focus is on loving the people who come to the dinner with God’s love.　彼らの焦点は、夕食に訪れる人々を神の愛をもって愛することにあるのです。

And they host the dinner in hopes that those who know Jesus will share Jesus with those who do not know Jesus.　 そして彼らは、イエス様を知っている人々がイエス様を知らない人々とイエス様を分かち合うことを願い、夕食会を主催します。

Thus, the focal point of the dinner is Jesus.　 したがって、夕食会の焦点はイエス様にあります。

As we have luncheons as a church throughout this year, let us remember to not get distracted with all our preparations but to focus on serving and listening to Jesus.　 今年、教会でランチをもつにあたり、準備に気を取られることなく、イエス様に仕え、イエス様の言葉に耳を傾けることに集中することを覚えましょう。

I believe after her conversation with Jesus, Martha was able to do so with no more worries and with great joy, マルタはイエス様との対話の後、もはや心配することなく大きな喜びをもってそうすることができたと信じます。

while Mary was able to continue to sit at Jesus’ feet and to listen to Him.　一方、マリヤはイエス様の足元に座り続け、そのお言葉に耳を傾け続けることができたのです。

We find out from reading the Gospels that these sisters, Martha and Mary, along with their brother Lazarus, held a special place in Jesus’ heart.　 福音書を読むと、マルタとマリヤという姉妹と、その兄弟ラザロが、イエス様の心の中で特別な位置を占めていたことがわかります。

We see this in Jesus’ interactions with them at a time of crisis for these siblings.　 このことは、この兄弟姉妹が危機に直面した時にイエス様が彼らと交わしたやり取りに見て取れます。

We read about this in John 11.　 ヨハネによる福音書11章にこのことが記されています。

What we read there is that Lazarus, Mary and Martha’s brother was sick, and so the sisters sent word to Jesus about the matter.　 そこには、マルタとマリヤの兄弟であるラザロが病気になったため、姉妹がそのことをイエス様に知らせたことが書かれています。

Of course, Mary and Martha were hoping that Jesus would come to heal Lazarus.　 もちろん、マリヤとマルタはイエス様が来てラザロを癒してくださることを願っていました。

However, after hearing the news of Lazarus being sick, Jesus purposefully stayed two days long in the place where He was.　 しかし、ラザロが病気だという知らせを聞いた後、イエス様はわざと二日間、その場所に留まりました。

He did this knowing exactly what He was doing, for he declared beforehand:　イエス様はご自身の行動を完全に理解した上でそうされたのです。なぜなら、あらかじめこう宣言しておられたからです：

“This sickness is not to end in death, but for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified by it.” (John 11:4)「この病気は死ぬほどのものではない。それは神の栄光のため、また、神の子がそれによって栄光を受けるためのものである」。（ヨハネの福音書１１章４節）

Then after the two days had passed, Jesus told His disciples that they will be going to Judea again, which is where Lazarus was.　 それから二日が過ぎた後、イエス様は弟子たちに、ラザロのいるユダヤ地方へ再び行くことを告げました。

In response to this, Jesus’ disciples expressed their concern for Jesus’ life, これに対し、弟子たちはイエス様の命を案じました。

because just a few days prior while they were in Jerusalem, the Jews were about to stone Him to death.　ほんの数日前、エルサレムにいた時、ユダヤ人たちがイエス様を石打ちにして殺そうとしていたからです。

However, Jesus explained to His disciples that Lazarus was dead, and exhorted His disciples to go with Him to where Lazarus was.　 しかしイエス様は弟子たちに、ラザロは死んでいると説明し、ラザロのいる場所へ自分と共に行くよう促されたのです。

Now where Lazarus was, and thus where Martha and Mary lived was a village named Bethany that was near Jerusalem.　 ラザロがいた場所、すなわちマルタとマリアが住んでいたのは、エルサレムの近くにあるベタニアという村でした。

So, Jesus and His disciples made their journey there.　こうしてイエス様と弟子たちはそこに向かって旅立ったのです。

John 11:17-22（ヨハネの福音書１１章１７～２２節）

¹⁷ So when Jesus came, He found that he had already been in the tomb four days. ¹⁸ Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off; ¹⁹ and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother. ²⁰ Martha therefore, when she heard that Jesus was coming, went to meet Him, but Mary stayed at the house. ²¹ Martha then said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. ²² Even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.” ¹⁷さて、イエスが行ってごらんになると、ラザロはすでに四日間も墓の中に置かれていた。¹⁸ベタニヤはエルサレムに近く、二十五丁ばかり離れたところにあった。¹⁹大ぜいのユダヤ人が、その兄弟のことで、マルタとマリヤとを慰めようとしてきていた。²⁰マルタはイエスがこられたと聞いて、出迎えに行ったが、マリヤは家ですわっていた。²¹マルタはイエスに言った、「主よ、もしあなたがここにいて下さったなら、わたしの兄弟は死ななかったでしょう。²²しかし、あなたがどんなことをお願いになっても、神はかなえて下さることを、わたしは今でも存じています」。

Martha came out to meet Jesus.　 マルタはイエス様を出迎えました。

She was a woman of action.　彼女は行動力のある女性でした。

And we also see that she freely spoke her mind.　 また、彼女は率直に自分の考えを口にしたことも分かります。

“Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.” 「主よ、もしあなたがここにいて下さったなら、わたしの兄弟は死ななかったでしょう」。

Perhaps there was a little bit of anger and frustration in what she was saying to Jesus.　 彼女のイエス様への言葉には、少しばかりの怒りと苛立ちが込められていたのかもしれません。

At the same time, Martha expressed her faith in Jesus as having God-given authority over sickness and even death.　 同時に、マルタは病や死さえも支配する神から与えられた権威をイエス様に認める信仰を表明しました。

“Even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.”「しかし、あなたがどんなことをお願いになっても、神はかなえて下さることを、わたしは今でも存じています」。

This was a very bold declaration of what she believed regarding Jesus, for she was emphatic in saying, “I know”.　 これは彼女がイエス様について信じていることを非常に大胆に宣言したもので、彼女は「私は知っている」と力強く言ったのです。

It shows that she had a special understanding of who Jesus was and therefore could speak freely with Him.　 これは彼女がイエス様について特別な理解を持っており、それゆえ彼と自由に話すことができたことを示しています。

Thus, Jesus also spoke freely with Martha.　 こうしてイエス様もまたマルタと自由に語り合いました。

John 11:23-24（ヨハネの福音書１１章２３～２４節）

²³ Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.” ²⁴ Martha said to Him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.” ²³イエスはマルタに言われた、「あなたの兄弟はよみがえるであろう」。²⁴マルタは言った、「終りの日のよみがえりの時よみがえることは、存じています」。

Jesus made a statement regarding the fact that Lazarus will rise again.　 イエス様はラザロが再びよみがえるという事実について宣言しました。

The Old Testament gave assurances that God would resurrect believers (Isaiah 26:19; Daniel 12:2).　 旧約聖書は神様が信じる者を復活させると約束していました（イザヤ26:19、ダニエル12:2）。

Thus, Martha believed in what Jesus said but in a general and future sense.　 したがって、マルタはイエス様の言葉を信じましたが、それは一般的かつ将来的な意味での信仰でした。

Martha believed that her brother will rise again in the resurrection on the last day.　 マルタは、弟が最後の日の復活においてよみがえることを信じていました。

However, as we will see in just a little bit, Jesus’ statement was not made in reference to the resurrection on the last day.　 しかし、これから見ていくように、イエス様の発言は最後の日の復活を指してなされたものではありませんでした。

This leads to the following famous exchange between Jesus and Martha.　これが、イエス様とマルタの間で交わされた次の有名なやり取りにつながります。

John 11:25-27

²⁵ Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me will live even if he dies, ²⁶ and everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this?” ²⁷ She said to Him, “Yes, Lord; I have believed that You are the Christ, the Son of God, even He who comes into the world.” ²⁵イエスは彼女に言われた、「わたしはよみがえりであり、命である。わたしを信じる者は、たとい死んでも生きる。²⁶また、生きていて、わたしを信じる者は、いつまでも死なない。あなたはこれを信じるか」。²⁷マルタはイエスに言った、「主よ、信じます。あなたがこの世にきたるべきキリスト、神の御子であると信じております」。

Jesus made a bold statement regarding His authority over life and death here, as well as the importance of faith in Him.　 イエス様はここで、生と死に対するご自身の権威と、ご自身への信仰の重要性について大胆な宣言をなさったのです。

And He pressed the matter by asking Martha: “Do you believe this?” そしてマルタに問いかけて、この問題をさらに深く掘り下げました。「あなたはこれを信じるか」。

To this question, Martha made a clear and powerful declaration of her faith in Jesus as the Christ and the Son of God.　 この問いに対して、マルタはイエス様をキリスト、神の子として信じるという、明確かつ力強い信仰の宣言をしたのです。

This declaration of faith in Jesus is considered one of the high points in the Gospel of John.　 このイエス様への信仰の宣言は、ヨハネによる福音書における重要な場面の一つと考えられています。

For it serves as an encouragement to all who read the Gospel to consider the question:　 　なぜなら、この宣言は福音書を読むすべての人々に、次の問いを考えるよう促す励ましとなるからです：

“Do you believe this—that Jesus is the resurrection and the life and those who believe in Him will have eternal life?”　 「あなたはこれを信じますか——イエスが復活であり命であり、彼を信じる者は永遠の命を持つと？」

And Martha’s response serves as an example of the proper response (conclusion) to Jesus’ question.　 そしてマルタの応答は、イエス様の問いに対する正しい応答（結論）の模範となるのです。

Having declared this to Jesus, Martha must have been truly comforted.　 イエス様にこう宣言した後、マルタはきっと心から慰められたに違いありません。

For this is what is recorded right after this:　 なぜなら、その直後にこう記されているからです：

John 11:28-29（ヨハネの福音書１１章２８～２９節）

²⁸ When she had said this, she went away and called Mary her sister, saying secretly, “The Teacher is here and is calling for you.” ²⁹ And when she heard it, she got up quickly and was coming to Him. ²⁸マルタはこう言ってから、帰って姉妹のマリヤを呼び、「先生がおいでになって、あなたを呼んでおられます」と小声で言った。²⁹これを聞いたマリヤはすぐに立ち上がって、イエスのもとに行った。

Martha called on Mary to go see Jesus.　 マルタはマリヤを呼び、イエス様に会いに行くよう促しました。

As she was comforted by Jesus and His words, Martha wanted Mary to experience the same.　イエス様とその言葉に慰められたマルタは、マリヤにも同じ体験をさせたかったのです。

John 11:30-37（ヨハネの福音書１１章３０～３７節）

³⁰ Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was still in the place where Martha met Him. ³¹ Then the Jews who were with her in the house, and consoling her, when they saw that Mary got up quickly and went out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there. ³² Therefore, when Mary came where Jesus was, she saw Him, and fell at His feet, saying to Him, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.” ³³ When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, He was deeply moved in spirit and was troubled, ³⁴ and said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to Him, “Lord, come and see.” ³⁵ Jesus wept. ³⁶ So the Jews were saying, “See how He loved him!” ³⁷ But some of them said, “Could not this man, who opened the eyes of the blind man, have kept this man also from dying?” ³⁰イエスはまだ村に、はいってこられず、マルタがお迎えしたその場所におられた。³¹マリヤと一緒に家にいて彼女を慰めていたユダヤ人たちは、マリヤが急いで立ち上がって出て行くのを見て、彼女は墓に泣きに行くのであろうと思い、そのあとからついて行った。³²マリヤは、イエスのおられる所に行ってお目にかかり、その足もとにひれ伏して言った、「主よ、もしあなたがここにいて下さったなら、わたしの兄弟は死ななかったでしょう」。³³イエスは、彼女が泣き、また、彼女と一緒にきたユダヤ人たちも泣いているのをごらんになり、激しく感動し、また心を騒がせ、そして言われた、³⁴「彼をどこに置いたのか」。彼らはイエスに言った、「主よ、きて、ごらん下さい」。³⁵イエスは涙を流された。³⁶するとユダヤ人たちは言った、「ああ、なんと彼を愛しておられたことか」。³⁷しかし、彼らのある人たちは言った、「あの盲人の目をあけたこの人でも、ラザロを死なせないようには、できなかったのか」。

In response to Martha’s call, Mary got up quickly to go see Jesus. マルタの呼びかけに応えて、マリヤはすぐに立ち上がり、イエス様に会いに行きました。

Once Mary saw Jesus, she fell on her knees at His feet.　 マリヤはイエス様を見ると、その足元にひざまずきました。

Then, Mary said the same thing to Jesus as Martha did:　そしてマリヤは、マルタが言ったのと同じことをイエス様に言ったのです：

“Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.” 「主よ、もしあなたがここにいて下さったなら、わたしの兄弟は死ななかったでしょう」。

Yet it seems that her grief was even greater than Martha’s.　 しかし彼女の悲しみはマルタのそれよりもさらに深いようでした。

She could not carry on a conversation with Jesus because of her sorrow.　 彼女は悲しみのあまり、イエス様と会話することもできなかったのです。

Jesus thus asked about where Lazarus’ tomb was (where his body was laid).　 そこでイエス様はラザロの墓（遺体が安置された場所）の所在を尋ねました。

And, it is recorded that Jesus wept.　 そして、イエス様は泣かれたと記されています。

Why did Jesus weep, especially knowing that He would soon resurrect Lazarus?　なぜイエス様は泣いたのでしょうか。特に、間もなくラザロを復活させられると知りながら、なぜ泣かれたのでしょうか。

Indeed, as noted by those who saw Jesus’ compassion towards Mary and those who were mourning with her, Jesus truly loved Lazarus.　 確かにイエス様がマリヤと彼女と共に嘆く者たちに対して示した憐れみを見た者たちが指摘したように、イエス様はラザロを心から愛していました。

We also know that Jesus is called “a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief” (Isaiah 53:3).　 また、イエス様は「悲しみの人で、病を知っていた」（イザヤ書53:3）と呼ばれていることも私たちは知っています。

Thus, He knows the pain of loss and suffering: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.　　 したがって、イエス様は喪失と苦しみの痛み——肉体的なもの、精神的なもの、感情的なもの、そして霊的なもの——を知っています。

Thus, Jesus wept and He sheds a tear over the sinful world we live in with all the sickness, suffering, death, and loss that we all face.　 それゆえ、イエス様は涙を流されたのです。私たちが生きるこの罪深い世界——病、苦しみ、死、喪失に直面するこの世界——のために涙を流されたのです。

Jesus genuinely cared for Lazarus, and mourned his death together with Mary and Martha.　イエス様はラザロを心から気遣い、マリヤとマルタと共にその死を悲しんだのです。

John 11:38-40（ヨハネの福音書１１章３８～４０節）

³⁸ So Jesus, again being deeply moved within, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. ³⁹ Jesus said, “Remove the stone.” Martha, the sister of the deceased, said to Him, “Lord, by this time there will be a stench, for he has been dead four days.” ⁴⁰ Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?” ³⁸イエスはまた激しく感動して、墓にはいられた。それは洞穴であって、そこに石がはめてあった。³⁹イエスは言われた、「石を取りのけなさい」。死んだラザロの姉妹マルタが言った、「主よ、もう臭くなっております。四日もたっていますから」。⁴⁰イエスは彼女に言われた、「もし信じるなら神の栄光を見るであろうと、あなたに言ったではないか」。

Now standing before the tomb where Lazarus’ dead body was laid, Jesus asked for the stone that blocked the entrance to the tomb to be removed.　 ラザロの死体が安置された墓の前に立ったイエス様は、墓の入り口を塞いでいた石を取り除くように命じました。

Perhaps this was said to His disciples who were with Him.　 おそらくこれは、イエス様と共にいた弟子たちに向けた言葉でした。

Martha then protested to Jesus, being concerned of the stench of the dead corpse.　 するとマルタは、死体の腐敗臭を懸念してイエス様に抗議したのです。

However, Jesus basically stopped Martha to listen to Him and believe Him:　しかしイエス様は、マルタを制してご自身の言葉に耳を傾け、信じるよう促されたのです：

“Did I not say to you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?” 「もし信じるなら神の栄光を見るであろうと、あなたに言ったではないか」。

So, we read on to see what happened next.　 では、次に何が起きたのか、読み進めてみましょう。

John 11:41-44（ヨハネの福音書１１章４１～４４節）

⁴¹ So they removed the stone. Then Jesus raised His eyes, and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. ⁴² I knew that You always hear Me; but because of the people standing around I said it, so that they may believe that You sent Me.” ⁴³ When He had said these things, He cried out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth.” ⁴⁴ The man who had died came forth, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.” ⁴¹人々は石を取りのけた。すると、イエスは目を天にむけて言われた、「父よ、わたしの願いをお聞き下さったことを感謝します。⁴²あなたがいつでもわたしの願いを聞きいれて下さることを、よく知っています。しかし、こう申しますのは、そばに立っている人々に、あなたがわたしをつかわされたことを、信じさせるためであります」。⁴³こう言いながら、大声で「ラザロよ、出てきなさい」と呼ばわれた。⁴⁴すると、死人は手足を布でまかれ、顔も顔おおいで包まれたまま、出てきた。イエスは人々に言われた、「彼をほどいてやって、帰らせなさい」。

What Jesus said here to the Heavenly Father proved what Martha believed about Jesus which she declared earlier:　 ここでイエス様が天の父に語った言葉は、マルタが以前、宣言したイエス様に対する彼女の信仰を証明しました。

“Even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You.” 「しかし、あなたがどんなことをお願いになっても、神はかなえて下さることを、わたしは今でも存じています」。

At the same time, Jesus probably did not say this just for the sake of Martha who already believed Jesus was sent by God the Father.　 同時に、イエス様は、すでにイエス様が父なる神から遣わされたと信じていたマルタのためだけに、こう言ったのではないでしょう。

He said it for the others who were there, who did not yet believe in Him.　 イエス様は、そこにいた他の者たち、まだイエス様を信じていなかった者たちのために、こう言ったのです。

Jesus then called forth Lazarus, and thus Lazarus’ life was restored to him.　 イエス様はラザロを呼び出し、こうしてラザロの命は彼に返されました。

We then see the results of this powerful work done by Jesus.　そして私たちは、イエス様によってなされたこの力強い御業の結果を目にします。

John 11:45-46（ヨハネの福音書１１章４５～４６節）

⁴⁵ Therefore many of the Jews who came to Mary, and saw what He had done, believed in Him. ⁴⁶ But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done. ⁴⁵マリヤのところにきて、イエスのなさったことを見た多くのユダヤ人たちは、イエスを信じた。⁴⁶しかし、そのうちの数人がパリサイ人たちのところに行って、イエスのされたことを告げた。

We see as we do with people’s encounter with Jesus back then and even today.　 今日でさえも、当時の人々がイエス様と出会った時と同じように、私たちは見ています。

Some will believe and some will not.　 信じる者もいれば、信じない者もいます。

Some will listen to Jesus and some will not.　 イエス様の言葉に耳を傾ける者もいれば、傾けない者もいます。

Some will listen to Jesus and believe and some will not.　 イエス様の言葉に耳を傾け、信じる者もいれば、信じない者もいます。

However, the true blessing is for those who will listen and believe Jesus, and obey Him.　 しかし、真の祝福は、イエス様の言葉に耳を傾け、信じ、従う者たちのためです。

For they will see the glory of God.　 彼らは神の栄光を見るからです。

This is shown by those who obeyed Jesus’ command to “Remove the stone.”　 これは「石を取り除け」というイエス様の命令に従った者たちによって示されています。

Only after that command was heeded did Jesus cry out with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth.”　 その命令が聞き入れられて初めて、イエス様は大声で叫びました。「ラザロ、出て来なさい」

Thus, it is important for us to listen to Jesus and respond to Him in faith.　 したがって、私たちがイエス様の声に耳を傾け、信仰をもって応答することが重要なのです。

Yet, this all happened right before Jesus was to be crucified.　 しかし、このすべてはイエス様が十字架にかけられる直前に起こったことでした。

In fact, the raising back to life of Lazarus added more fuel to the fire for the Jewish religious leaders to want to kill Jesus.　 実際、ラザロの復活は、ユダヤの宗教指導者たちがイエス様を殺そうとする火にさらに油を注ぐ結果となりました。

Thus, it is recorded in John 11:53:　こうして、ヨハネによる福音書11章53節にはこう記されているのです：

So from that day on they planned together to kill Him. 彼らはこの日からイエスを殺そうと相談した。

After this, Jesus stayed away from Jerusalem until the Passover.　 その後、イエス様は過越の祭りが終わるまでエルサレムから離れていました。

It was at this final Passover time in which Jesus was to be crucified, that Jesus was once again together with Martha and Mary and Lazarus.　 イエス様が十字架につけられることになった最後の過越の祭りの時期に、イエス様は再びマルタとマリアとラザロと共にいました。

We see once again this family’s closeness to Jesus as shown in the following passage of Scripture.　 聖書の次の箇所に見られるように、この家族がイエス様にどれほど親密であったかが改めて示されています。

John 12:1-3（ヨハネの福音書１２章１～３節）

¹ Jesus, therefore, six days before the Passover, came to Bethany where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. ² So they made Him a supper there, and Martha was serving; but Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with Him. ³ Mary then took a pound of very costly perfume of pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.  ¹過越の祭の六日まえに、イエスはベタニヤに行かれた。そこは、イエスが死人の中からよみがえらせたラザロのいた所である。²イエスのためにそこで夕食の用意がされ、マルタは給仕をしていた。イエスと一緒に食卓についていた者のうちに、ラザロも加わっていた。³その時、マリヤは高価で純粋なナルドの香油一斤を持ってきて、イエスの足にぬり、自分の髪の毛でそれをふいた。すると、香油のかおりが家にいっぱいになった。

Although this is a wonderful passage of Scripture, I am not going to spend much time on it.　 これは素晴らしい聖書の箇所ですが、ここで長く立ち止まるつもりはありません。

We see some similar things from before with this family.　この家族については以前にも似たようなことがありました。

We see that Martha was serving.　 マルタが仕えていたこと。

We see that Lazarus was reclining at the table with Jesus.　 ラザロがイエス様と共に食卓に腰を下ろしていたこと。

And then we see Mary once again at the feet of Jesus.　 そして今度は、再びマリヤがイエス様の足元にいたこと。

This time, Mary anointed the feet of Jesus with very costly perfume of pure nard and wiped His feet with her hair.　 この度、マリヤは純粋なナルドの非常に高価な香油でイエス様の足に油を注ぎ、自分の髪でその足を拭いたのです。

Thus, Mary’s act of love is well remembered by all and should be.　 このマリヤの愛の行為は、すべての人々の記憶に深く刻まれ、またそうるべきでした。

For Jesus Himself said about what Mary did in answer to Judas Iscariot’s criticism of her costly act:　なぜなら、イエス様ご自身が、マリヤの高価な行為を非難したイスカリオテのユダに対して、彼女の行いについてこう言われたからです：

“Let her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of My burial.” (John 12:7) 「この女のするままにさせておきなさい。わたしの葬りの日のために、それをとっておいたのだから」。（ヨハネの福音書１２章７節）

Yes, whether knowingly or unknowingly, out of her love for Jesus, Mary was preparing Jesus to go to die on the cross.　 そうです、知ってか知らずか、イエス様への愛から、マリヤはイエス様が十字架で死ぬための準備をしていたのです。

However, today, I hope you were able to learn something about the importance of listening to Jesus through Martha’s example.　今日、私は皆さんがマルタの例を通して、イエス様の声に耳を傾けることの重要性について何か学べたことを願っています。

Although we see Martha doing here what she was doing before, which is serving, I believe that at this time, Martha was not distracted like she was before.　 ここでマルタが以前と同じ奉仕をしているように見えても、この時は以前のように取り乱してはいなかったと私は思います。

She was enjoying the moment with Jesus together with Lazarus and Mary.　 彼女はラザロやマリヤと共に、イエス様とのひと時を楽しんでいたのです。

Through her previous encounters with Jesus, Martha was able to make more certain her faith in Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God, her Savior and Lord.　 マルタはこれまでのイエス様との出会いを通して、イエス様がキリストであり、神の子であり、救い主であり主であるという信仰をより確かなものにしていきました。

She as the onei-san of the family was responsible to care for her younger siblings, as well as to guide them to faith in Jesus.　 彼女は家族の長女として、弟妹たちの世話をする責任を負い、彼らをイエスへの信仰へと導く役割も担っていました。

I believe Martha’s strong role in the family allowed Lazarus and Mary to truly be themselves.　 マルタが家族の中で果たした強い役割こそが、ラザロとマリヤが真の自分らしくあることを可能にしたのだと思います。

This meant Lazarus could sit with Jesus and Mary could be at Jesus’ feet.　 つまりラザロはイエス様の傍らに座り、マリヤはイエス様の足元に座ることができたのです。

And this was all possible because Martha truly learned to listen to Jesus and to trust and obey Him.　 これらが全て可能だったのは、マルタが真にイエス様の声に耳を傾け、信頼し従うことを学んだからです。

If and when Jesus calls you out by name (especially twice), make sure that you listen to Him.　 もしイエス様があなたの名前を呼んだなら（特に二度も）、必ずその声に耳を傾けてください。

He is not just trying to get your attention.　 主は単にあなたの注意を引こうとしているのではありません。

And when you do, you will truly see the glory of God.　 主はあなたに御言葉を聞き、それによって主を信頼し従うことを望んでおられるのです。

He wants you to listen to Him, and in so doing, to trust and obey Him.　そうするとき、あなたは真に神の栄光を目にすることでしょう。
