ダニエル、ザカリヤ、マリア、ヨセフ、羊飼いが天使に向き合った時には共通点があります。これらの人たちが天使の訪問を受けた時に、彼らは皆、例外なく、そのことを恐れ、心に心配を抱きました。
ここからはっきりと分かることがあります。天に属する者が人間の前にあらわれる時に、どうやら私たちが最初に持つ感情は「恐れ」と「心配」だということです。なぜなら、彼らは明らかに我々人間とは異なる存在だからです。この地上で出会うことがない存在だからです。未知の者に遭遇することは私達の恐れとなるのです。
神が人の子の姿をとられて、この世界に来られたということには何と深い神の私たちに対する思いがあることでしょうか。天地万物をその手に治める全知全能の神は、私たちが抱き上げようと思えば、抱き上げることができる、誰かに完全に依存しなければならない赤子となったのです。誰がその赤子を見て、恐れるでしょうか。
このことを私たちは神の私たちに対する「愛」と呼びます。もしイエス様が神の栄光を見にまとい、私たちの前に現れたら、私たちはそのきよさの前に圧倒され、恐れ多くて近づくこともできないでしょう。イエス様の弟子ヨハネは、このイエス様の誕生を思いながら、こう書き残しました。ヨハネ第一の手紙４章１０節、１８節、
『わたしたちが神を愛したのではなく、神がわたしたちを愛して下さって、わたしたちの罪のためにあがないの供え物として、御子をおつかわしになった。ここに愛がある』
『愛には恐れがありません。全き愛は恐れを締め出します』

完全な愛は恐れを締め出す

聖書の中には「天使」が出てきます。天使は神様に仕え、時に神様のメッセンジャーとなり、人間に神様のお心や計画を伝えました。
数週間前、私はダニエル書の８章から、皆さんに天使ガブリエルがダニエルに現れたということをお話ししました。その時、ガブリエルはダニエルにメシアの誕生がいつ頃なのか、またその誕生の目的を告げました。
その時から６００年が経ち、この御使いガブリエルは、祭司ザカリヤにあらわれ、彼の妻、エリサベツが男の子を産むだろうと語りかけたとルカの１章は記録しています。このことをザカリヤに告げてから、さらに天使ガブリエルは動きます。御使いガブリエルは忙しいのです。
彼はマリアのもとに行き、彼女にイエス様の受胎を告知します（ルカ１章２６節）、このことが起きてからマリアは先のザカリヤの妻、エリサベツに会いに行きます。その時、人の力を超えて、子を胎に宿すことになった、この二人の女性の間にはこんな会話がなされたかもしれません。
「うちの夫にガブリエルと名乗る御使いが現れたのよ」「え〜、そのガブリエル、私のところにも来たのよ」「夫が調べたところ、大昔、ガブリエルは私たちの先祖、ダニエルにもあらわれて、メシアの誕生について預言していたらしいわよ！」「マリヤ、あなたのお腹にいる子供は、そのメシアよ！」「あら、やだ、私の子が今、お腹の中で動いたわ！」
メシア誕生の預言をダニエルに語った天使ガブリエルは、時が満ちて、６００年後にその預言の成就をマリアに伝えたのです。ここにメシア誕生に関する長い年月を経た一貫性があります。メシヤの誕生はその時のきまぐれな思いつき、偶然に起きたことではありませんでした。神様はイエス様の先駆けとして荒野に道を備えるエリサベツから生まれるバプテスマのヨハネまでも、その計画の中に入れていたのです。そこには継続された周到な計画がありました。ガブリエルは神様から「お前をメシア誕生に関する一連のスポークスマンとして任命するから、しっかりとこの任務を完了せよ」と指令を受けていたようです。
聖書はこの他にマリアの夫、ヨセフにも、羊飼いにも御使いが現れたことを記録していますが、そこにはその御使いがガブリエルであったということは書かれていません。ですから、それは別の天使だったかもしれませんし、ガブリエルだったのかもしれません。そのことに対する過剰な検索はここでは控えたいと思います。
しかし、ダニエル、ザカリヤ、マリア、ヨセフ、羊飼いが天使に向き合った時には共通点があります。これらの人たちが天使の訪問を受けた時に、彼らは皆、例外なく、そのことを恐れ、心に心配を抱きました。
ダニエル１０章１６節、１７節 「16 見よ、人の子のような者が、わたしのくちびるにさわったので、わたしは口を開き、わが前に立っている者に語って言った、「わが主よ、この幻によって、苦しみがわたしに臨み、全く力を失いました。17 わが主のしもべは、どうしてわが主と語ることができましょう。わたしは全く力を失い、息も止まるばかりです」
ルカ１章１１節、１２節 「11すると主の御使が現れて、香壇の右に立った。12ザカリヤはこれを見て、おじ惑い、恐怖の念に襲われた」
ルカ１章２８節−３１節 28 御使がマリヤのところにきて言った、「恵まれた女よ、おめでとう、主があなたと共におられます」。29 この言葉にマリヤはひどく胸騒ぎがして、このあいさつはなんの事であろうかと、思いめぐらしていた。30 すると御使が言った、「恐れるな、マリヤよ、あなたは神から恵みをいただいているのです。31 見よ、あなたはみごもって男の子を産むでしょう。その子をイエスと名づけなさい。
マタイ１章２０節（新改訳）彼がこのことを思いめぐらしていたとき、主の使が夢に現れて言った、「ダビデの子ヨセフよ、恐れないであなたの妻マリアと迎えなさい。その胎内に宿っているものは聖霊によるものです。
ルカ２章８節、９節8 「さて、この地方で羊飼たちが夜、野宿しながら羊の群れの番をしていた。9 すると主の御使が現れ、主の栄光が彼らをめぐり照らしたので、彼らは非常に恐れた」

なぜなら、彼らは明らかに我々人間とは異なる存在だからです。この地上で出会うことがない存在だからです。未知の者に遭遇することは私達の恐れとなるのです。その天使達は一様にイエス・キリストの誕生を彼らに伝えたのです。
イエス・キリストは天使達の上に立つ神であり、天使以上のきよさと威光をもつ存在です。ですから、本来、神のご性質をもった存在は、天使以上に我々にとって恐れとなるはずです。本来、神の子、イエス様の前に私達が立つ時、その強烈なきよさを伴う輝きにより、私たちの罪深さが照らされ、私たちの心は恐れと不安に包まれます。罪深い我々が、心に闇を抱える私たちが、完全にきよいお方の光に照らされることは、私たちにとって恐れ以外のなにものでもないのです。
はたして、ダニエルを除く、これらの人たちは皆、天使が告げたイエス様にこの後に、出会います。しかし、不思議なのです。誰一人として御使い以上のきよさと栄光を有するイエス様に恐れを抱く者はいなかったのです。彼らがイエスを恐れたというような記録は聖書にないのです。なぜ？彼らが見たイエス様は飼葉桶に寝かされていたベイビーだったからです。
皆さん、神が人の子の姿をとられて、この世界に来られたということには何と深い神の私たちに対する思いがあることでしょうか。天地万物をその手に治める全知全能の神は、私たちが抱き上げようと思えば、抱き上げることができる、誰かに完全に依存しなければならない赤子となったのです。誰がその赤子を見て、恐れるでしょうか。このことを私たちは神の私たちに対する「愛」と呼びます。
もしイエス様が神の栄光を身にまとい、私たちの前に現れたら、私たちはそのきよさの前に圧倒され、近づくこともできないでしょう。イエス様の弟子ヨハネは、このイエス様の誕生を思いながら、こう書き残しました。

「わたしたちが神を愛したのではなく、神がわたしたちを愛して下さって、わたしたちの罪のためにあがないの供え物として、御子をおつかわしになった。ここに愛がある」
神様は私たちのために、このことを古の昔から備えていたのです。そして、この後にヨハネはこう書き残しました。
ヨハネ第一の手紙４章１８節（新改訳）
「愛には恐れがありません。全き愛は恐れを締め出します」
私たちのために、飼葉に寝かされることをよしとしてくださった乳飲み子イエス・キリストは私たちに恐れをいだかせません。そして、完全な愛は私たちの恐れを締め出すのです。御使いがイエス様の父となるヨセフに現れた時、この御使いは預言者イザヤの預言を用いて、彼にこう言いました。
マタイ１章２３節
「見よ、おとめがみごもって男の子を産むであろう。その名はインマヌエルと呼ばれるであろう」。これは、「神われらと共にいます」という意味である」
この言葉はこのようなことを言っています。「ヨセフよ、私は我が子をあなたに託す。心配するな。私は必ずあなたと共にいる」。ヨセフと同じように、神はあなたと共にいる・・・。ヨセフと同じように、神はわたしと共にいる・・・。インマヌエルと呼ばれたイエス様ご自身もこのことを自覚しており、私たちに約束しています。
マタイ２８章２０節
『見よ、わたしは世の終りまで、いつもあなたがたと共にいるのである』
今、皆さんには恐れがありますか？恐れは私たちの心にある普通の感情ですから、それを覆い隠そうとしたり、誤魔化す必要はありません。そうではなく、その恐れを感じる時、飼葉桶に横たわっている主イエス・キリストを心に取り戻しましょう。神は既に、私たちのためにあちらから、こちらにやってきて、私たちの間に住んだのです。ここに愛がある。愛には恐れがない。
そして、完全な愛だけが私たちの恐れを締め出してくれるのです。多くの人は言います。「処女が子供を産んだって！家畜小屋で神が生まれたって？何を言っているのだ！」「神が人間の手にかかり、俺たちの罪のために十字架にかかったって。冗談もやすみやすみに言え！」「そして、死んでよみがえったって？クレイジー！」この世で一番、大きな愛を知っていますか。それは私たちが理解できないほど大きな愛なのです。
この地上で必死に生きている私たちに本当に必要な約束は多くはありません。そして、それはとても短い約束です。「恐れるな。わたしはあなたと共にいる」主にある皆さん、この主の約束の言葉と共に日々を歩んでいこうではありませんか。お祈りしましょう。
Perfect Love Casts Out Fear

The Bible mentions “angels.” Angels serve God and sometimes act as His messengers, conveying His will and plans to people.
Several weeks ago, I spoke from Daniel chapter 8 about the angel Gabriel appearing to Daniel. At that time, Gabriel told Daniel when the Messiah would be born and the purpose of His birth.
Six hundred years later, as recorded in Luke chapter 1, the angel Gabriel appeared to the priest Zechariah and told him that his wife Elizabeth would bear a son. After telling this to Zechariah, the angel Gabriel moved on. The angel Gabriel is busy.
He went to Mary and announced to her the conception of the Lord Jesus (Luke 1:26), and after this, Mary went to visit Elizabeth, the wife of Zechariah. At that time, these two women who supernaturally came to have a child in their wombs, might have had the following conversation as they came together.
“An angel named Gabriel appeared to my husband.” “Oh my, that Gabriel came to see me too.” “My husband did some research, and apparently way back when, Gabriel appeared to our ancestor Daniel and prophesied about the Messiah’s birth!” “Mary, the child in your womb is the Messiah!” “Oh my, my baby just moved inside my womb!”
The angel Gabriel, who had foretold the Messiah’s birth to Daniel, announced its fulfillment to Mary six hundred years later when the time was fulfilled. Here lies the consistency that has endured through the long years concerning the birth of the Messiah. The Messiah’s birth was not a whim of the moment, nor did it happen by chance. God had included even John the Baptist, born to Elizabeth, who would prepare the way for Jesus in the wilderness, within His plan. There was a meticulously planned scheme that had been ongoing. Gabriel had apparently received instructions from God: “I appoint you as the spokesperson for the series of events surrounding the Messiah’s birth. Complete this task thoroughly.”
The Bible also records that angels appeared to Mary’s husband Joseph and to the shepherds, but it does not state that the angel was Gabriel. Therefore, it might have been another angel, or it might have been Gabriel. I would prefer to refrain from doing excessive search on that matter here.
However, Daniel, Zechariah, Mary, Joseph, and the shepherds all share something in common when they faced the angel. When these people received a visit from an angel, they all, without exception, were afraid and troubled in their hearts.
Daniel 10:16, 17
16 Then one who looked like a man touched my lips, and I opened my mouth and began to speak. I said to the one standing before me, “I am overcome with anguish because of the vision, my lord, and I feel very weak. 17 How can I, your servant, talk with you, my lord? My strength is gone and I can hardly breathe.”
Luke 1:11, 12
11 Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. 12 When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear.
Luke 1:28-31
28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.
Matthew 1:20
But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
Luke 2:8, 9
8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.
One thing becomes clear from these verses. When heavenly beings appear before humans, it seems our first emotions are fear and worry. If an angel sent by God were to appear before us tonight, we would not think “How cute!” or “How cool!”, but rather we would think “How terrifying!” Why?
Because they are clearly beings different from us humans. Because they are beings we will never encounter on this earth. Encountering the unknown becomes our fear. Those angels uniformly announced the birth of Jesus Christ to them.
Jesus Christ is God who stands above the angels, possessing holiness and majesty surpassing that of the angels. Therefore, a being possessing the very nature of God should naturally be more fearsome to us than angels. When we stand before Jesus, the Son of God, His intense, purifying radiance reveals our sinfulness, and our hearts are filled with fear and anxiety. For us who are sinful, for us who harbor darkness in our hearts, to be illuminated by the light of the completely pure One is nothing but fear for us.
Indeed, all these people except Daniel will later meet the Lord Jesus whom the angel announced. But it is strange. No one feared Jesus, who possessed greater purity and glory than the angels. There is no record in the Bible that they feared Jesus. Why? Because the Jesus they saw was the baby that laid in a manger.
What profound love God must have for us that He took on the form of a human being and came into this world! Have you ever thought about it? The all-knowing, all-powerful God who rules all creation in His hands became a helpless infant, completely dependent on others—one we could lift up if we chose to. Who would see that infant and be afraid? We call this God’s “love” for us.
If Jesus were to appear before us, clothed in the glory of God, we would be overwhelmed by His holiness and unable to approach Him. John, one of Jesus’ disciples, wrote this as he reflected on the birth of Jesus.
1 John 4:10
This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
God has prepared this for us from ancient times. And after this, John wrote the following.
1 John 4:18
There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear,
The infant Jesus Christ, who for our sake was content to be laid in a manger, does not cause us to fear. There is no fear in love. And perfect love casts out our fear. When the angel appeared to Joseph, the man who was to become the father of Jesus, he spoke to him using the prophecy of the prophet Isaiah, saying:
Matthew 1:23
“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).
These words mean the following. “Joseph, I entrust My child to you. Do not worry. I will certainly be with you.” Just as with Joseph, God is with you . . . Just as with Joseph, God is with me . . . Jesus Himself, called Immanuel, was aware of this and has promised us.
Matthew 28:20
“And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Do you feel fear right now? Fear is a normal emotion within our hearts, so there is no need to cover it up or pretend it isn’t there. Instead, when you feel that fear, let us bring back to mind the Lord Jesus Christ lying in the manger. God has already come from heaven to here for us, and has lived among us. This is love. There is no fear in love.
And only perfect love can cast out our fears. Many people say, “A virgin gave birth to a child! God was born in a stable? What are you talking about!” “God was put on a cross by human hands for our sins? Give me a break!” And died and came back to life? Crazy!” Do you know the greatest love in this world? It is a love so great that we cannot comprehend it.
We who struggle desperately to survive on this earth do not need many promises. And it is a very short promise. “Do not be afraid. I am with you.” Dear people in the Lord, let us walk each day together with this promise from the Lord. Let us pray.
