よくいかなる宗教も同じ山頂を目指しているのであって、それぞれの道は異なるけれど、行きつくところは同じだと言われます。このような言葉は私達を惹きつけます。なぜでしょうか、なぜなら気楽だからです。この道の行きつくところはどこかしらと考え、不安に思うよりも、どの道も結局は同じと思うことのほうが私達にはコンフォタブルです。しかし、聖書はそのようには言っていません。すなわちもし真理というものがあるのなら、その「真理」は「私達が気楽でいたいと願う気持ち」とは何ら関係のないものなのです。

あなたが歩いている道について

日本に稲森和夫という方がいます。サンディエゴにも馴染みのある京セラの創立者であり、かつての上司でしたという方もこの中にいらっしゃるかと思います。ここ数年は日本航空の経営再建に取り組まれて、おそらくサンディエゴに日本航空が乗り入れたことにも大きな一役を担っている方だと思います。その稲森さんがこんなことを書いています。「人生の旅路には近道も、また楽々と飛んでいける魔法の絨毯などもない。自分の足で、一歩づつ歩いていかなければならない。小さな一歩一歩が積み重なり、相乗効果を生み出していく」。
稲森さんに限らず、私達は自分の人生というものを好んで「道」に例えます。「君の行く道は果てしなく遠い」という歌を私達はよく知っていますし、「マイ・ウエイ」という歌を口づさむ方もいるでしょう。そうです、信仰がある、ないに限らずに自分は今、人生の旅路を歩んでいるのだと考える人は多くいます。そして、言うまでもなくその意味は、朝目覚めたら靴を履いてその道を歩き出し、日が暮れたらその道の傍らに寝泊まりして、また翌朝、ストレッチして歩き出すということではありません。
私達は生まれた瞬間から各々の道を歩き始め、この地で息を引き取るまでその道を歩き続けているのです。少年期、青年期、そして壮年期にも、たとえ病床に伏していても、私達は確かにこの人生の旅路を日々、歩んでいます。このことは聖書も言っていることでして、ヘブル書には私達は寄留者だと書かれています。そうです、寄留者とは一時、ひとつ所に身を寄せている人のことであり、その生活自体が旅路の中にある者達、その人生の旅路を歩んでいる者達のことです。
私達がシリーズで見ております箴言には「道」という言葉が何度も出てきます。たとえば箴言１６章を見ますとそこには五回も「道」という言葉が出てくるのです。その中にこんな言葉があります。『人の道は自分の目にことごとく潔しと見える。しかし主は人の魂をはかられる』（箴言１６章２節）。『人が見て自分で正しいとする道があり、その終わりはついに死にいたる道となるものがある』（箴言１６章２５節）。
まず今日はこれらの言葉を中心に「私達には歩くべき道があります」ということについてお話しましょう。
私達には歩くべき道があります。
この箴言の二つの言葉を見ます時に共通することは私達の目に、私達が歩んでいる道は「ことごとく潔く見え」、また「正しく見える」ということです。しかし、その道は「私達にはそう見える」ということで、きわめてその見方は主観的なものです。
私達はこれまで数えきれないほどの「選択」と「決断」を自分でしてきました。ある学者は私達は一日に三百もの決断をするといいます。何時に起きるか。何を着るかから始まり、何時に寝るかまでまさしく一日が決断の連続です。そして、そのうちの１０パーセントの決断はその後の人生に影響を与える可能性があるといいます。
そのような決断を何十年もしてきて、その決断が導いているところが、今の私達です。あの日、あの時に、アメリカに行くか行くまいかという選択肢が目の前にあり、私達はアメリカに行くという決断をして、今、ここにいます。さらに教会に行くか行くまいか、クリスチャンになるかなるまいか、そんな決断をして今、この礼拝にいるのです。詩篇１０７篇はこのように記しています。
2 主にあがなわれた者は言え。主は彼らを悩みからあがない、3 もろもろの国から、東、西、北、南から彼らを集められた。4 彼らは人なき荒野にさまよい、住むべき町にいたる道を見いださなかった。5 彼らは飢え、またかわき、その魂は彼らのうちに衰えた（詩篇１０７篇２節－５節）。
この詩篇の言葉から分かることは、私達には歩くべき道があるのだということです。そうです、ここに「彼らは人なき荒野にさまよい、住むべき町にいたる道を見いださなかった」とあるように、私達には「住むべき町」があり、「そこにいたる道がある」とここには書かれています。どの道も結局、私達が住むべき道にいたるのだとは書かれていません。

イザヤ３０章２１節には「あなたが右に行き、あるいは左に行く時、そのうしろで「これは道だ、これに歩め」と、神様が私達に語られている私達が歩むべき道があるということを書いており、さらにイザヤ５３章６節などを見ますと「私達はみな、羊のようにさまよい、おのおの、自分勝手な道に向かっていった」と本来、私達が歩くべき道に対して、自分勝手な道というものがあり、私達はさ迷っているのだということが書かれています。そして、先の箴言にいたっては「人が見て自ら正しいとする道でも、その終りはついに死に至る道となるものがある」というようにとても厳粛な言葉です。そして、この言葉は明らかにその終わりが死に至らない道もあるということも語っており、あなたはその道を選びなさいと私達に語りかけてきます。
大抵、私達は自ら好んで災いや試練を選ぶことはありません。ですからそのような道は極力さけて、自ら進む道を選びます。しかしながら、自分には最善に見えた道、希望に思えた道が実はそうではなかったということがあります。いかがでしょうか、私達にもそのような経験がないでしょうか。残念ながら、私達は過去にさかのぼり、あの選択と決断の日をやり直すということはできません。私達ができることは、これからも私達の前に日々、ふた別れ、三つ別れになって表れるどの道を選んでいくかということです。
かつてイスラエルにはエレミヤという預言者がいました。彼は神様から離れて自分勝手な道を歩む人々に語りかけ、人々はその語りかけにこう答えたと記しています。エレミヤは言いました、16主はこう言われる、「あなたがたはわかれ道に立って、よく見、いにしえの道につき、良い道がどれかを尋ねて、その道に歩み、そしてあなたがたの魂のために、安息を得よ。しかし彼らは答えて、『われわれはその道に歩まない』と言った。17わたしはあなたがたの上に見張びとを立て、『ラッパの音に気をつけよ』と言った。しかし彼らは答えて、『われわれは気をつけることはしない』と言った。18それゆえ国々の民よ、聞け。会衆よ、彼らにどのようなことが起るかを知れ（エレミヤ６章１６節－１８節）。
エレミヤは神様の言葉を取り次ぎ語ります。分かれ道にたって、よくよく考えなさいと。そうです、分かれ道とは、まさしくその後の自分の生き方を大きく変える分岐点です。そのような所に私達が立つのなら、よき道を選びなさいと。しかし、ここには「彼らはそれに歩まない」と書かれています。神様は彼らに注意をうながします。しかし「彼らはそれに気をとめない」とも書いてあります。ゆえに、これらの民の心のかたくなさに対して、彼らにどんなことが起こるか知ることになるだろうと主は言われるのです。
ここで「いにしえの道」と書かれていることに私達は目を留めます。いにしえとは昔という意味です。古いという意味です。その昔からある道に目を留めなさいということです。
私達の手元には聖書があります。ここには古に起きた出来事が記録されています。その時代に生きた人たちが分かれ道に立って、どんな道を選んだのかが聖書を読むと分かります。その時に彼らがおのが目に良しと思われる道を選んだのか、神様が導かれた道を選んだのかということも、そのところに読み取ることができます。あのアブラハムと甥のロトがそれぞれに住み着く場所を選び取ったということが創世記１３章には書かれていますが、それなどはよい例でしょう。彼らがどのようにその道を選んだのかということだけではなく、その彼らの動機による決断と選択が彼らをどのような生涯へと導いていったのか、その導かれて行く先までも私達は古の書、聖書から知ることができます。
ということはどういうことかといいますと、私達はその人たちの正しい選択と誤った選択というものを今、この所で知ることができるということであり、そのところから私達がどんな道を選んだらいいのかということを考え、決めることができるということです。
人間の行動パターンはだいたい決まっています。限られた可能性の中で人間は考え、限られた感情の中で生きていますから、私達が今、考えていることやしようとしていることはほぼ全て過去に誰かが取り組んで、その結果を経験しています。その集大成が聖書なのです。ゆえに私達が日々、聖書を読み、そこから学ぶことはとても大切なことです。それは私達をエンターティンさせる書なのではなくて、まさしく私達が今日、何を決断していくのか、私達が歩むべき道はどのみちなのか、そのことの道しるべとなる書なのです。
二つ目のことをお話しましょう。それは「歩むべき道を選ぶ理由」ということです。
歩むべき道を選ぶ理由
ここまでお話してきましたように私達は自分の道は正しい、潔いと思います。ソロモンもそう書いています。しかし、それでこの言葉は終わりません。これらの言葉には続きがあります。『人の道は自分の目にことごとく潔しと見える。しかし主は人の魂をはかられる』（箴言１６章２節）。
潔いと思われる道に対して、神様は私達の魂をはかるといいます。どういうことなのでしょうか。そうです、潔いというのは自分でそう思うのであって、そう思っている私達の魂はどうなのかということを主ははかられるというのです。どんなに潔いと思っていても、その思いがある魂がおかしいのであるのなら、その潔さというのは自己満足に過ぎません。
先日「ノア」という映画を観てきました。創世記に記されているあのノアを題材とした映画です。その映画は聖書に記されていること以外の脚色が多くなされており、ある人にとっては受けつけられないかもしれませんが、私には勉強になることがありました。その映画でいいアプローチだなと思ったことの一つは、その映画の中で度々、アダムとイブが禁断の実を食べてしまったシーンを描写していることであり、その時から人間はどのようになっていったのか、その結末にノアの物語を位置づけているということでした。
すなわち、それはこういうことです。あの禁断の実を前にしてアダムとイブは「食べる」か「食べない」かを考え、自らそのことを決める自由が与えられていたということでした。まさしく、そのことこそが神が最初から人に託されていることで、アダム、イブの後の人間達も各々自分の歩む道を選び、その諸々の決断の行きついた先が、邪悪で満ちており、故に神様はこの世界に洪水を起こすにいたったということなのです。そして、それはすなわち私達も今、自ら歩く道を決める自由が与えられているということであり、そのことがまさしく今、私達の間に混乱を起こしているのです。
使徒行伝１４章にはバルナバとパウロがルステラという町において伝道をしていた時に、そこに住む人たちがこの二人を神として崇めようとしたということが書かれています。それに対して、この二人はその群集の中に飛び込んで行きこう叫びました。
１６神は過ぎ去った時代には、すべての国々の人が、それぞれの道を行くままにしておかれたが、１７それでも、ご自分のことをあかししないでおられたわけではない。すなわち、あなたがたのために天から雨を降らせ、実りの季節を与え、食物と喜びとで、あなたがたの心を満たすなど、いろいろのめぐみをお与えになっているのである」。
彼らは叫んだのです『神は過ぎ去った時代には、すべての国々の人が、それぞれの道を行くままにしておかれた』。
そうです、神様は今も私達がそれぞれの道を行くままにしておられます。しかし、ここに記されているように、その中においてもはたらかれており、私達に天来の多くの恵みをくださることによって、ご自身を私達に証ししておられます。しかし、私達はそのことに気がつくことなく生きているのです。
マルコ６章３４節にはイエス・キリストがある時、その話を聞こうとその行く先々に押しかけてくる群衆を見て「飼う者のない羊のようなその有様を深くあわれんだ」（マルコ６章３４節）と書かれています。私は羊飼いではありませんから、飼い主のいない羊がどのような状態なのかは分かりません。しかし、その毛は汚れ、彼らはどこに居ればいいのか、自らを守る安全な場所も見つけることができずに、ただ吹きざらしの風の中、各々が意味もなくあちこちに散っていたというような姿がそこにはあったのではないでしょうか。
またイエスのその生涯最後の時が近づいた時、イエスはエルサレムに近づき、その町を見た時に泣いてこう言われました「もしおまえも、この日に、平和をもたらす道を知ってさえいたら・・・しかし、それは今おまえの目に隠されている」（ルカ19章41節－４２節）。イエスが涙を流されたというこれは数少ない聖書の記録の一つです。イエスはエルサレムを見て泣かれたというのです。それはエルサレムという町の町並みを見たからではなく、その町に住む人達を見てイエスは泣いたというのです。こう泣いたのです「もしおまえが平和をもたらす道を知ってさえいたら」。この世界に今もある多くの内戦、殺戮、侵略、そして家庭、教育の現場、私達のはたらく場所、主がもし、それらを見るのならば、今もその口から同じ言葉が語られるのではないでしょうか。
今朝、既に取り上げていますようにソロモンは言いました「人が見て自ら正しいとする道でも、その終りはついに死に至る道となるものがある」（箴言１４章１２節）。これはとても緊迫した言葉です。私達の選択の中で、ここを歩むという道が実は死に至る道だというのですから。皆さん、ご自身の生涯を振り返った時に「これぞ、わが生きる道」と思われた道を歩き始めて、実際はその道が間違っていたのではないかと思われたことはありませんか。正しいと思われた道なのに、私の心は今、死んでいるという方いませんか。今までいつも人と衝突して、人を傷つけ、そればかりか自分を傷つけてきました。振り返れば、それが私がこれまで歩んできた道ですという方いませんか。イエスはそんな私達を見て、そのことに心揺さぶられるほどに悲しみ「もし、あなたが私が与える平和の道を歩いていたら」と語りかけているのです。
米国で車を運転する方なら、必ず経験するでしょう。運転すべきフリーウエイを間違えてしまうということが。フリーウエイ５をサンデイェゴから北上しますとそれはアーバインの手前で４０５に枝分かれします。そのまま５を行くのと、４０５を使うのとでは、その行き先が異なります。もしディズニーランドに向かっているのなら５にとどまるべきであり、ロサンゼルス空港に行くのなら４０５を使うべきでしょう。
私達の人生には、日々の生活には色々な問題が起こります。その問題が問題となっている原因を見出す人はさいわいです。そうです、その原因を見つけることができないと、その問題の解決にはならないことに私達は多くの時間とエネルギーを注ぎ、さらにそのような努力をしても、何ら問題の解決にいたらないということになります。そのまま人生も終盤、結局、その問題の原因すらも分からず、そこに手つかずにこの世の生涯を終えるとしたらなんとそれは悲しいでしょうか。
主が「この道を歩みなさい」と言われるのなら、自ら歩んでいる道を歩くことをやめ、主のおっしゃる道を歩み始めることです。歩んでいる道が違い、主の願う終着点に向かっていないということは、新しい車を買ったり、オイルをチェンジして解決できることではなく、その道を変える以外にないのです。
イザヤという預言者はその歩むべき道を知らずに各々、好き勝手な道を選んで歩んでいた者達にこういいました（イザヤ５５章6節－9節）
６あなたがたは主にお会いすることのできるうちに、主を尋ねよ。近くおられるうちに呼び求めよ。７悪しき者はその道を捨て、正しからぬ人はその思いを捨てて、主に帰れ。そうすれば、主は彼にあわれみを施される。われわれの神に帰れ、主は豊かにゆるしを与えられる。８わが思いは、あなたがたの思いとは異なり、わが道は、あなたがたの道とは異なっていると主は言われる。９天が地よりも高いように、わが道は、あなたがたの道よりも高く、わが思いは、あなたがたの思いよりも高い。
神は人に自由意志を与えられました。ですから、私達は自分の歩むべき道を選ぶことができます。これは大きな祝福です。私達がもし自分の歩いている道というものについて、「これで本当にいいのだろうか」「このままこの道を歩んでいったらどうなってしまうのだろうか」と言う思いがその心にあるのなら、あるいはもうこの道を歩むのは限界だという方がいるのなら、その悩みのただ中に主に呼ばわって神様に立ち帰ることをお勧めします。その時に「既に遅し」ということはありません。私達は今から私達の目に潔しと思われていた道、、私達の目に正しく思われていた道から方向を転換して、神がこの道に歩めと言われるこの道を歩み始めることができるのです。
詩篇３７篇５節－７節にはこう書かれています。あなたの道を主に委ねよ。主に信頼せよ、主はそれを成し遂げ、あなたの義を光のように明らかにし、あなたの正しいことを真昼のように明らかにされる。主の前にもだし、耐え忍びて主を待ち望め。おのが道を歩んで栄える者のゆえに、悪いはかりごとを遂げる人のゆえに心を悩ますな。
私達が神の道に立ち返り、その神の道に自らを委ねて、歩き始めるということについて誤解されている方達が大勢います。すなわちその時から私達は粛々と「あれもだめ、これもだめ」と浮世離れの生活するのではないだろうかと考えているということです。今も多くの方々はクリスチャンになるということは、人生の喜び楽しみを全て手放すことになると誤解しているということです。
しかし、聖書はそのようなことを記してはいません。先に取り上げました詩篇１０７篇において、住むべき町にいたる道を選んだ者達の幸いについて聖書はこう記しています。『どうか、彼らが主のいつくしみと、人の子らになされたくすしきみわざとのために、主に感謝するように』（詩篇１０７篇８節）。
私達がこの道を歩み始める時に、私達はとてもエキサイティングなことを経験することになります。なぜなら、それまでは目に見える世界だけで一喜一憂していた私達に、新しく主のいつくしみと、くすしきそのみわざを見出すようになるからです。私はこの特権を一つの人生の道中を二倍楽しむことなのだと受け止めています。詩篇１６篇を書いたダビデはそのこ醍醐味を知っていたのでしょう。彼は１１節においてこう歌ったのです「あなたは命の道を私に示される。あなたの前には満ち溢れる喜びがあり、あなたの右には、とこしえにもろもろの楽しみがある」。
私達が神の道を歩むということは、その道で神が成してくださる奇しきみわざ、すなわち私達には思いもつかない、想像もしない神のわざを信仰をもって見ることができるということなのです。どうでしょうか、皆さん、私達もこの道を歩もうではありませんか。イザヤが記しているように「あなたが右に行き、あるいは左に行く時、そのうしろで「これは道だ、これに歩め」（イザヤ３０章２１節）という御声を聞いている方はいますか。もし、そのささやきを聞いている方がいるのなら、もう一つのことが私達に求められています。そうです、その道を選ぶのは誰彼ではない、私達なのです。主の道を歩む、そのことを選び取った人の生涯はなんとさいわいなことでしょうか。お祈りしましょう。
About your way

Mr. Kazuo Inamori is a well-known individual in Japan. He is a founder of Kyocera Company. A US branch of it has been in operation in San Diego for many years. Perhaps some of you worked under him. He was also instrumental in re-building the troubled Japan Air Lines company. Perhaps he had some say about Japan Air Lines’ new direct flight to Tokyo from San Diego. This Mr. Inamori wrote: “There is no short cut or a magic carpet in life. One has to walk through that journey one step at a time. Such small steps build the foundation of our life.”
Many of us consider our life as a journey or a travel. We sing “Long and endless journey”, and some others like the song “My Way”. Yes, regardless of our religious background, many of us consider that we are traveling the journey of life. This journey is not as simplistic as putting on our shoes in the morning; finding lodging as the sun goes down; and resuming the trip the next morning after a morning stretch.
We begin this journey immediately after our birth, and will have to keep walking until the day we take our last breath. We walk through this trip every day of our life, in our childhood days, in youth, in middle age, even when we are sick in bed. The Bible seems to agree, too. The book of Hebrews tells us that we are ”foreigners and strangers on earth.” It tells us that we are temporary residents on this earth. We are essentially travelers, namely the travelers of our life’s journey .
We have been studying the book of Proverbs. The word “way” is mentioned there often. For example in Chapter 16 of Proverbs, the word “way” is mentioned five times. Here are some of them: “All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord.” (Proverbs 16:2) “There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.” (Proverbs 16:25)
This morning, I would like to consider the way we take through our life. Let us consider a first point, namely, “There is a way we should take.”
There is a way we should take
These two readings from the Proverbs say that the way we are walking on seems pure to us, and appears to be right. But, it points out that the way only seems to look that way to us. This is a rather subjective view.
In our life we make countless choices and decisions. One scholar said we make close to 300 decisions a day. We decide when to get up, what to wear, when to go to bed, and so forth. Our days are filled with series of decisions. And, it is said that 10 percent of such decisions could change our subsequent life.
We make such decisions every day for many decades. Our life is built on our decisions. One day, we faced a chance to go to USA. We decided to come to USA and we are here today. One day, we made a decision to come to church, and some of you decided to become a Christian, too. Psalms 107 says:
“2Let the redeemed of the Lord tell their story—those he redeemed from the hand of the foe, 3 those he gathered from the lands, from east and west, from north and south. 4 Some wandered in desert wastelands, finding no way to a city where they could settle. 5 They were hungry and thirsty, and their lives ebbed away.” (Psalms 107:2-5)
This scripture from Psalms points out that there is a way we should choose to take. This says that these people wandered in desert wastelands, finding no way to a city where they could settle. It says that there is a right way leading to a city where we could settle. Please note that it does not say that all roads would eventually take us to that city where we could settle.
Often people say that all religions take us to the top of the same mountain. They say we will end up at the same destination no what which way we take. This is a very comforting thought since we need not make conscious decisions about the way to take. It says we don’t have to worry where a particular road would take us. Isn’t it nice to hear that all roads would take us to the same place? But, the Bible does not say so. The Bible says that if there is such a thing as the truth, it cannot be obtained simply by doing nothing on our part.
Isaiah 30:21 says“21 Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’”That is God speaking to us. In Isaiah 53:6, it says:“We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way.” This says that there is a way we must choose and there is a way we actually decide to take on our own, and that many of us select a wrong way and we go astray. And the Proverbs says: “There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.” This is a very sobering word. It also tells that that there definitely is a road that does not lead us to death, and that we should choose that road.
None of us willingly choose trouble and tribulation. We try to avoid such roads when we choose our way. But, there is a chance that the way which looked to be the best and full of hope could turn out to be otherwise. Don’t we all have such experiences? Unfortunately, we cannot go back to the past decisions and correct them. What we can do, however, is to make sure that, from now on, we make correct decisions when we come to crossroads of our life.
There was a prophet in Israel by the name of Jeremiah. He said that God spoke to people who had selected wrong roads, and Jeremiah recorded how people reacted to God:
Jeremiah said:“16 This is what the Lord says: “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said, ‘We will not walk in it.’ 17 I appointed watchmen over you and said, ‘Listen to the sound of the trumpet!’ But you said, ‘We will not listen.’ 18 Therefore hear, you nations; you who are witnesses, observe what will happen to them. ” (Jeremiah 6:16-18)
Jeremiah conveyed the words of God. “Stand at the crossroads, and think carefully.” The crossroads are the crucial decision points which will change our life greatly. God says if people are at such crossroads, they should think carefully. But, people said they won’t walk in it. God said listen to the sound of the trumpet, but people said they would not listen. So, because they were so stubborn, God said people would know what would happen to them.
Here, it talks about the “ancient paths.” Ancient paths were there from old times. This scripture says to pay attention to these ancient paths.
We have a Bible in our hands. Many events of the old days are recorded here. We learn which paths these people took when they came to a fork of the roads. We can see whether they took a road which they thought to be good, or they chose the road which God told them to take. For example, Genesis 13 talks about Abraham and his nephew Lot. Each of them chose a place to live. We can learn not only which way they selected, but also what motivated them to do so, and the consequences of their choice. We can read all about this in the ancient book of the Bible.
This means we can learn from the Bible what the correct decision was and what was wrong. We can learn from their decisions. This is where we learn so that we can make correct decision when we find ourselves at a crossroad.
Human behavior patterns are similar. Available choices are limited, and our emotions are not too different. What we face, think and agonize over, are things that people had faced long ago, and we even know the consequences of such decisions. The Bible is a collection of human history. That is why it is very important for us to read the Bible daily so that we can learn from it. The Bible is not designed to entertain us. Bible provides us with guidelines on how to make correct decisions when we face the crossroads of our life journey.
Let me talk about the second point: “The reason for selecting the correct way.”
Reason for selecting the correct way
I said that we tend to believe that our way is right and pure. Solomon seems to agree. But, Solomon did not stop there. He continued to say: “All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord.” (Proverbs 16:2)
It says that the Lord weighs our motives. What does this mean? We tend to think that our way is pure. That is how we think. But the Lord questions our motive behind such opinion. We might think that our way is pure. But, if the motive behind is questionable, then we are cheating ourselves.
The other day, I saw a movie titled “Noah”. It is a move about that Noah, a famous character from the Genesis. This movie added some liberal interpretation to what is recorded in the Bible. So, some of you might not like it. But I found some scenes interesting. This movie shows scenes of Adam and Eve eating the forbidden fruits several times, and points out how such decisions impacted human history after that, and that the consequence of such action led to the story of the flood Noah had to face.
Let me elaborate. Adam and Eve were given a freedom to choose whether to eat or not eat the forbidden fruits. They were free to choose their action. This was the way God created us. Adam and Eve, and the people coming after them, were given power to choose their own way. But the consequence of their wrong decisions was filled with evil. That was why God decided to bring the flood to the world. This means that we too are given freedom to choose our way in which to walk. And, the confusion and conflict in our world are the consequences of our misguided decisions.
Acts chapter 14 records an incident when Barnabas and Paul were visiting a town of Lystra. It says that people there tried to worship Barnabas and Paul as gods. But Barnabas and Paul rushed out into the crowd and shouted:
16 In the past, he let all nations go their own way. 17 Yet he has not left himself without testimony: He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.”(Acts 14:16-17)
They shouted that “In the past, God let all nations go their own way.” Yes, this is true today also. God is letting us go our own way. But, at the same time, as was pointed out here, God is among us and we can see his work through generous blessing he is offering to us. But, we simply do not realize or are not aware of God’s presence among us.
In Mark chapter 6 verse 34, it is written that when Jesus Christ saw the large crowd coming to listen to him, “he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.” (Mark 6:34) Since I am not a shepherd, I do not know how sheep would look without the care of a shepherd. But I can imagine that these sheep were dirty, were at the mercy of blowing winds, did not know where to go, and were wandering around aimlessly with no safe place to live.
Luke 19 writes when Jesus was close to end of his life,41 As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it 42 and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. (Luke 19:41-42)
Bible does not record too many scenes in which Jesus cried. This section says that Jesus wept when he saw the city of Jerusalem. Jesus did not cry seeing the streets of Jerusalem. He wept seeing the people of Jerusalem. He wept saying: “If only you knew the correct road to peace…” Jesus would say the same thing today when Jesus sees civil conflicts, killings, invasions, and problems with our family, schools, and workplaces.
As I have pointed out earlier, Solomon said:“There is a way that appears to be right,but in the end it leads to death.” (Proverbs 14:12)
This statement has urgency. It says that there are ways, which we might choose, that will lead us to death. When you look back, have you had a moment when you realized that the way you had selected before turned out to be wrong? You thought it was the right decision, but your heart has become lifeless because of your choice? Have you collided with other people and hurt them as well as yourself? Do you feel that was how you have traveled thus far? When Jesus sees us in such a state, he is moved to tears and says “if only you have taken the way of the peace I have given you”.
Any of us driving a car in these USA experience choosing a wrong freeway at least once. When you travel north on I-5 freeway from San Diego, it splits into I-5 and I-405 before Irvine. If you are going to the Disney Land, you should stay on I-5. But if you are going to the Los Angeles International Airport, you should switch to I-405.
We face many challenges and problems in our daily life. Anyone who can identify and understand the cause for such problems is lucky. If we cannot identify the source of such problems, we would be wasting precious time and energy on fruitless efforts. Simply working harder would not lead to correct solution. It would be very sad if we had to face the end of our life without even realizing what caused such problems.
If the Lord says: “Take this road”, we should move from the current road we are walking and switch to the road the Lord told us to take. If we are on a wrong path and it does not take us to what the Lord wants us to reach, the only way to correct the situation is to listen to the Lord and switch over to what Jesus recommends.
Prophet Isaiah said to the people who did not know the correct way and were wandering aimlessly:
Seek the Lord while he may be found; call on him while he is near. 7 Let the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts. Let them turn to the Lord, and he will have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will freely pardon.
8 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. 9 “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
(Isaiah 55:6-9)
God granted us free will. That is why we are allowed to choose our own way. This is a great blessing. If some of you are wondering if the choice you had made was correct or wrong, or if it is OK to continue to travel on that way, or if you feel you are at your limit’s end, I would strongly urge you to turn back to the Lord and the God. The time to turn back to God is never too late. Any of us can walk away from the way we thought to be pure and correct, and begin to walk the way God has told us to walk in.
Psalm 37:5-7 says:
Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this: 6 He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn, your vindication like the noonday sun. 7 Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.
Many people seem to have a wrong impression when we talk about going back to God and walking his way. Namely, people think that when we turn to God’s way, we must give up everything in this world and live a “pure” life. Many people seem to wrongly assume that becoming a Christian is to give up all of the joy of life.
But, the Bible does not say anything like that. As I have mentioned earlier, Psalms 107 talks about the blessed life of people who decided to walk toward the city God has prepared for them :
“Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing loveand his wonderful deeds for mankind.” (Psalms 107:8)
The moment we start walking the way God has provided, we will begin to experience the most exciting life. We used to be pushed around by the events in the visible world. But, this new way will open our eyes to the love of the Lord and His powerful doings. I believe strongly that taking this way would allow us to more than double the excitement of life. David, who wrote Pslams Chapter 16, must have agreed. In Verse 11, he said:
“You make known to me the path of life;you will fill me with joy in your presence,with eternal pleasures at your right hand.” (Psalms 16:11)
When we choose the way of the Lord, our faith would open up our eyes and we begin to see the most amazing and unimaginable works of the Lord. Brothers and sisters, let us choose to walk this way also. Are you listening to the voice mentioned in Isaiah: “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’”?(Isaiah 30:21) If you do listen to that voice, there is an important decision we must make. Yes, we are given chance to choose the right way. It’s the way of the Lord. How happy would we be when we decide to choose that way! Let us pray.
