Andrew: Bringing People to Jesus
アンデレ：人々をイエスに導く

Last Sunday, Pastor Okura gave a message focused on Joseph. 先週の日曜日、大倉牧師はヨセフに焦点を当てたメッセージを語りました。
We learned of how Joseph, who became the earthly father of Jesus, although being inconspicuous was full of love and courage. イエス様の地上の父となったヨセフが、目立たない存在でありながらも愛と勇気に満ちていたことを学びました。
Indeed, of all of the men in the world, God chose this Joseph to be the earthly father of His only begotten Son Jesus. 確かに、この世のすべての男性の中から、神はこのヨセフを一人子イエス様の地上の父として選ばれたのです。
So far, we have looked at people in the New Testament that were a big part of Jesus’ birth and family. これまで、私たちは新約聖書に登場する、イエス様の誕生と家族に深く関わった人々を見てきました。
Zechariah and Elizabeth who in their old age were given a son John (a.k.a., John the Baptist), were related to Jesus through his mother Mary. 年老いてから息子ヨハネ（別名、洗礼者ヨハネ）を与えられたザカリヤとエリサベツは、母マリアを通じてイエス様と親族関係にありました。
Thus, John the Baptist would also have been a relative, something akin to being Jesus’ cousin. したがって、バプテスマのヨハネもまた親族、いわばイエス様のいとこのような存在だったのです。
And of course, we have already mentioned Joseph, who was instrumental to Jesus’ early upbringing in this world. そしてもちろん、この世でイエス様の幼少期の育成に重要な役割を果たしたヨセフについては、すでに触れました。
Over the next few weeks, we will turn our attention to some of Jesus’ disciples and other people who were close to Jesus 今後、数週間にわたり、イエス様の弟子たち、そしてイエス様に親しく接した人々、

Today, we will look at one of Jesus’ first disciples, Andrew. 今日はイエス様の最初の弟子の一人であるアンデレについて見ていきます。
For most people who have read the Bible, they would probably associate Andrew with his older brother Peter. 聖書を読んだことのあるほとんどの人は、アンデレを彼の兄であるペテロと関連づけるでしょう。
Peter kind of overshadowed his younger brother Andrew because of his outwardly expressive and leading-the-way nature. ペテロはその外向的で先導的な性格から、弟のアンデレを影のように覆い隠していました。
Andrew was a calm and behind-the-scenes kind of person. アンデレは穏やかで、裏方的な人物でした。
However, Andrew whose name means “manly” was also bold, decisive, and deliberate. しかし、「男らしい」という意味の名前を持つアンデレも、大胆で決断力があり、思慮深い人でした。
When you do a Bible search of “Peter”, you get 162 results in the New Testament. 聖書で「ペテロ」を検索すると、新約聖書で １６２ 件の結果が得られます。
However, when you do a search of “Andrew”, you get only 12 results in the New Testament. しかし、「アンデレ」を検索すると、新約聖書では １２件の結果しか得られません。
We will look together at Peter in a couple of weeks. 数週間後には、ペテロについて一緒に見ていきます。
Today, we will look at Peter’s brother, Andrew. 今日はペテロの兄弟であるアンデレについて見ていきます。
As was mentioned a couple of weeks ago, Andrew was a disciple of John the Baptist. 数週間前に述べたように、アンデレはバプテスマのヨハネの弟子でした。
A disciple is simply a “follower,” and Andrew was a follower of John the Baptist. 弟子とは、単に「追随者」のことですが、アンデレはバプテスマのヨハネの追随者でした。
I suppose, in today’s world, it would be sort of like “following” someone on social media.今日の世界では、ソーシャルメディアで誰かを「フォローする」と思います。
You usually do not follow someone you are not interested in or do not trust. 通常、興味のない人や信頼できない人をフォローすることはありません。
In Jesus’ time, those who were interested in someone and trusted that person, would literally follow that person. イエス様の時代、誰かに興味を持ち、その人を信頼した人々は、文字通りその人に従いました。
They would also tell others about that person and assist in spreading the teachings of that person to others. また、その人について他の人々に話し、その人の教えを他の人々に広める手助けもしました。
In today’s world, it would be kind of like re-posting what the person you are following said or did. 今日の世界では、それは、自分がフォローしている人の発言や行動を再投稿するようなものかもしれません。
Thus, Andrew followed John the Baptist and was his disciple and shared with others his teachings. こうして、アンデレはバプテスマのヨハネに従い、その弟子となり、その教えを他の人々に伝えました。
We first see Andrew with John the Baptist in the Gospel of John. ヨハネの福音書で、私たちは初めてアンデレがバプテスマのヨハネと一緒にいるのを見ます。
And it was through John the Baptist’s testimony regarding Jesus that Andrew began to follow Jesus. そして、バプテスマのヨハネのイエス様に関する証言を通して、アンデレはイエス様に従うようになったのです。

35 Again the next day John was standing with two of his disciples, 36 and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God!” 37 The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. 38 And Jesus turned and saw them following, and said to them, “What do you seek?” They said to Him, “Rabbi (which translated means Teacher), where are You staying?” 39 He said to them, “Come, and you will see.” So they came and saw where He was staying; and they stayed with Him that day, for it was about the tenth hour. 40 One of the two who heard John speak and followed Him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. 41 He found first his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which translated means Christ). 42 He brought him to Jesus. In this passage of Scripture, we see that not only Andrew, but the apostle John who recorded this in his Gospel, was also a disciple of John the Baptist. この聖書箇所では、アンデレだけでなく、この出来事を福音書に記した使徒ヨハネも、バプテスマのヨハネの弟子であったことが分かります。
And both of them began to follow Jesus based on John the Baptist’s testimony. そして、二人とも、バプテスマのヨハネの証言に基づいて、イエス様に従うようになったのです。
In this passage of Scripture, we also see that Andrew was the one who brought his brother Peter to Jesus. また、この聖書箇所では、アンデレが兄のペテロをイエス様のもとに連れてきた人物であったこともわかります。
This is a very important quality of Andrew. これは、アンデレの非常に重要な資質です。
It is that Andrew is someone who enables others to come to Jesus. アンデレは、他の人々がイエス様のもとに来ることを可能にする人物なのです。
He provides the opportunity for people to have access to Jesus. 彼は、人々がイエス様にアクセスする機会を提供しています。
We will get back to this a little later, この点については後ほど詳しく述べますが、
but I want us to first note that Andrew is recorded in all four Gospels as being one of the first disciples to be called by Jesus to follow Him. まず、アンデレは、イエス様に召されて弟子となった最初の弟子の一人として、四つの福音書すべてに記されていることに注目してください。
We have already seen this in the Gospel of John. ヨハネの福音書でも、このことはすでに確認しています。
We see this in the following Gospel accounts as well. このことは、以下の福音書でも確認できます。

Mark 1:14-18（マルコ１章１４節—１８節）
14 Now after John had been taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, 15 and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.” 16 As He was going along by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew, the brother of Simon, casting a net in the sea; for they were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” 18 Immediately they left their nets and followed Him. 14ヨハネが捕えられた後、イエスはガリラヤに行き、神の福音を宣べ伝えて言われた、15「時は満ちた、神の国は近づいた。悔い改めて福音を信ぜよ」。16さて、イエスはガリラヤの海べを歩いて行かれ、シモンとシモンの兄弟アンデレとが、海で網を打っているのをごらんになった。彼らは漁師であった。17イエスは彼らに言われた、「わたしについてきなさい。あなたがたを、人間をとる漁師にしてあげよう」。18すると、彼らはすぐに網を捨てて、イエスに従った。
It seems evident from these passages of Scripture that Andrew and Peter これらの聖書の箇所から、アンデレとペテロは、
did not become Jesus’ official (full time) disciples until Jesus called them away from their work as fishermen. イエス様が彼らを漁師の仕事から呼び出す時まで、イエ様の公式の（フルタイムの）弟子にはならなかったことが明らかであるようです。
Jesus called them away from going after fish to going after people, イエス様は、彼らを魚を追いかけることから人を追いかけることへと呼びかけ、
so that they may join Him in telling others to repent and believe in the gospel. 彼らがイエス様に加わって、悔い改め、福音を信じるよう人々に伝えることができるようにしたのです。
In the Gospel of Luke, we do not see the initial calling of Andrew by Jesus. ルカの福音書では、イエス様によるアンデレの最初の召しは描かれていません。
However, we see that in the choosing of the twelve apostles, Luke records Andrew along with, or next to Peter, and also with James and John, the sons of Zebedee. しかし、十二使徒の選出において、ルカはアンデレをペテロと並んで、またゼベダイの息子たちであるヤコブとヨハネとともに記録しています。
Thus, stressing the order in which these twelve became disciples of Jesus. このように、この十二人がイエスの弟子となった順番を強調しています。
Luke 6:12-16（ルカ６章１２節—１６節）
12 It was at this time that He went off to the mountain to pray, and He spent the whole night in prayer to God. 13 And when day came, He called His disciples to Him and chose twelve of them, whom He also named as apostles: 14 Simon, whom He also named Peter, and Andrew his brother; and James and John; and Philip and Bartholomew; 15 and Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot; 16 Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor. 12このころ、イエスは祈るために山へ行き、夜を徹して神に祈られた。13夜が明けると、弟子たちを呼び寄せ、その中から十二人を選び出し、これに使徒という名をお与えになった。14すなわち、ペテロとも呼ばれたシモンとその兄弟アンデレ、ヤコブとヨハネ、ピリポとバルトロマイ、15マタイとトマス、アルパヨの子ヤコブと、熱心党と呼ばれたシモン、 16ヤコブの子ユダ、それからイスカリオテのユダ。このユダが裏切者となったのである。
Although Andrew was not part of what we call Jesus’ three closest disciples—Peter and James and John—アンデレは、イエス様の最も親しい弟子たち、すなわちペテロ、ヤコブ、ヨハネの ３人には含まれていませんでしたが、
he is always listed right after them in any mention of the apostles. 使徒たちについて言及される際には、常にこの ３人の直後にその名が挙げられています。
We see this even in the book of Acts, after Jesus ascended back to heaven. これは、イエス様が天に昇られた後の『使徒行伝』にも見られることなのです。
Acts 1:13（使徒行伝１章１３節）
When they had entered the city, they went up to the upper room where they were staying; that is, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James. 彼らは、市内に行って、その泊まっていた屋上の間にあがった。その人たちは、ペテロ、ヨハネ、ヤコブ、アンデレ、ピリポとトマス、バルトロマイとマタイ、アルパヨの子ヤコブと熱心党のシモンとヤコブの子ユダとであった。
Being in such a position, Andrew got to hear Jesus’ teachings and see His miraculous works up close and personal. そのような立場にあったアンデレは、イエス様の教えを間近で聞き、その奇跡的な働きを間近で目にする機会がありました。
We see this in the following two incidences. これは、次の ２つの出来事からもわかります。
Mark 1:29-31（マルコ１章２９節—３１節）
29 And immediately after they came out of the synagogue, they came into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30 Now Simon’s mother-in-law was lying sick with a fever; and immediately they spoke to Jesus about her. 31 And He came to her and raised her up, taking her by the hand, and the fever left her, and she waited on them. 29それから会堂を出るとすぐ、ヤコブとヨハネとを連れて、シモンとアンデレとの家にはいって行かれた。30ところが、シモンのしゅうとめが熱病で床についていたので、人々はさっそく、そのことをイエスに知らせた。31イエスは近寄り、その手をとって起されると、熱が引き、女は彼らをもてなした。
Mark 13:1-6, 9, 33（マルコ１３章１節—６節、９節、３３節）
1 As He was going out of the temple, one of His disciples said to Him, “Teacher, behold what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings!” 2 And Jesus said to him, “Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left upon another which will not be torn down.” 3 As He was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew were questioning Him privately, 4 “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when all these things are going to be fulfilled?” 5 And Jesus began to say to them, “See to it that no one misleads you. 6 Many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He!’ and will mislead many. . . . 9 But be on your guard; for they will deliver you to the courts, and you will be flogged in the synagogues, and you will stand before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them. . . . 33 Take heed, keep on the alert; for you do not know when the appointed time will come.” 1イエスが宮から出て行かれるとき、弟子のひとりが言った、「先生、ごらんなさい。なんという見事な石、なんという立派な建物でしょう」。2イエスは言われた、「あなたは、これらの大きな建物をながめているのか。その石一つでもくずされないままで、他の石の上に残ることもなくなるであろう」。3またオリブ山で、宮にむかってすわっておられると、ペテロ、ヤコブ、ヨハネ、アンデレが、ひそかにお尋ねした。4「わたしたちにお話しください。いつ、そんなことが起るのでしょうか。またそんなことがことごとく成就するような場合には、どんな前兆がありますか」。5そこで、イエスは話しはじめられた、「人に惑わされないように気をつけなさい。6多くの者がわたしの名を名のって現れ、自分がそれだと言って、多くの人を惑わすであろう」。。。。9「あなたがたは自分で気をつけていなさい。あなたがたは、わたしのために、衆議所に引きわたされ、会堂で打たれ、長官たちや王たちの前に立たされ、彼らに対してあかしをさせられるであろう」。。。。33「気をつけて、目をさましていなさい。その時がいつであるか、あなたがたにはわからないからである」。
So, we can see that Andrew truly got a front row seat to witness what Jesus said and did. このように、アンデレは、イエス様の言葉や行いを最前列で目撃していたことがわかります。
As I mentioned earlier, Andrew was the one who brought Peter to Jesus. 先ほども述べたように、アンデレはペテロをイエス様のもとに連れてきた人物です。
He was indeed someone who enabled others to come to Jesus. 彼は、まさに他の人々をイエス様のもとに導く役割を果たした人物でした。
So, for the rest of this message, I would like to talk about this aspect of Andrew. そこで、このメッセージの残りの部分では、アンデレのこの側面についてお話したいと思います。
There are two particular incidences recorded in the Bible that we see Andrew serving as a bridge to connect people to Jesus. 聖書には、アンデレが人々をイエス様につなぐ架け橋としての役割を果たした、２つの具体的な出来事が記録されています。
The first incidence takes place during a well-known miracle that Jesus did. 最初の出来事は、イエス様が行ったよく知られた奇跡の最中に起こりました。
It is the feeding of the five thousand people with just five barley loaves and two fish. それは、わずか五つの大麦のパンと二匹の魚で五千人を養った奇跡です。
Some of us may remember that these barley loaves and fish were provided by a boy who had these things on him to eat for his lunch. この大麦のパンと魚は、昼食として持っていた少年が提供したものと覚えている人もいるでしょう。
However, the Gospel of John’s account of the incidence gives greater detail as to how the disciples served Jesus in this matter. しかし、ヨハネによる福音書はこの出来事について、弟子たちがこの件でイエス様にどのように仕えたかをより詳細に記しています。
As a large crowd followed Jesus to a remote area where food was not readily available, Jesus asked his disciples about how to provide food for these people. 大勢の群衆がイエス様に従って食糧の入手が困難な辺境の地へ来た時、イエス様は弟子たちに、この人々に食糧をどう提供すべきか尋ねました。
John 6:5-13（ヨハネ６章５節—１３節）
5 Therefore Jesus, lifting up His eyes and seeing that a large crowd was coming to Him, said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread, so that these may eat?” 6 This He was saying to test him, for He Himself knew what He was intending to do. 7 Philip answered Him, “Two hundred denarii worth of bread is not sufficient for them, for everyone to receive a little.” 8 One of His disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to Him, 9 “There is a lad here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are these for so many people?” 10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thousand. 11 Jesus then took the loaves, and having given thanks, He distributed to those who were seated; likewise also of the fish as much as they wanted. 12 When they were filled, He said to His disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments so that nothing will be lost.” 13 So they gathered them up, and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves which were left over by those who had eaten. 5イエスは目をあげ、大ぜいの群衆が自分の方に集まって来るのを見て、ピリポに言われた、「どこからパンを買ってきて、この人々に食べさせようか」。6これはピリポをためそうとして言われたのであって、ご自分ではしようとすることを、よくご承知であった。7すると、ピリポはイエスに答えた、「二百デナリのパンがあっても、めいめいが少しずついただくにも足りますまい」。8弟子のひとり、シモン・ペテロの兄弟アンデレがイエスに言った、9「ここに、大麦のパン五つと、さかな二ひきとを持っている子供がいます。しかし、こんなに大ぜいの人では、それが何になりましょう」。10イエスは「人々をすわらせなさい」と言われた。その場所には草が多かった。そこにすわった男の数は五千人ほどであった。11そこで、イエスはパンを取り、感謝してから、すわっている人々に分け与え、また、さかなをも同様にして、彼らの望むだけ分け与えられた。12人々がじゅうぶんに食べたのち、イエスは弟子たちに言われた、「少しでもむだにならないように、パンくずのあまりを集めなさい」。13そこで彼らが集めると、五つの大麦のパンを食べて残ったパンくずは、十二のかごにいっぱいになった。
Jesus made it clear that He wanted to feed the multitude. イエス様は、大勢の人々に食べ物を与えたいと明確に述べました。
He asked Philip where they might buy bread, but of course they were in a remote area. イエス様はピリポに、どこでパンを買うことができるかを尋ねましたが、もちろん、彼らは人里離れた場所にいました。
Philip and the other disciples were probably thinking only in logistical terms, ピリポや他の弟子たちは、おそらく現実的な問題だけを考えたのでしょう。
thus his reply of how much it would cost, more than six months’ worth of wages, to feed the multitude. そのため、群衆を養うには ６か月分の給料以上もの費用がかかるとピリポは答えたのです。
It was at this point that Andrew spoke up. その時点で、アンデレが口を開きました。
I am sure that even Andrew knew that five barley loaves and two small fish would not be enough to feed five thousand people. アンデレでさえ、５ 個の大麦のパンと ２匹の小さな魚では ５０００人の人々に食べさせるには十分ではないことを知っていたと思います。
However, as was his nature, he brought the boy to Jesus anyway. しかし、彼の性格通り、彼はとにかくその少年をイエス様のもとに連れてきました。
Jesus blessed the loaves of bread and the fish, and with it He fed the multitude and had 12 baskets full of leftovers. イエス様はパンと魚を祝福し、それをもって群衆に食べさせ、１２ の籠に余るほど残りました。
From the miracle that took place, we learn that it is not the greatness of the gift that counts, but rather the greatness of the God to whom it is given. 起こったこの奇跡から、大切なのは贈り物の大きさではなく、それを受けとる神様の偉大さであることを私達は学びます。
In this sense, Andrew set the stage for the miracle. この意味で、アンデレは奇跡の舞台を整えたのです。
It should be noted that all things are possible with God, so Jesus didn’t even need to have that boy’s lunch in order to serve the crowd. 神様にはすべてのことが可能であることに留意すべきであり、イエス様は群衆に食事を提供するために、その少年の弁当をさえ必要としなかったのです。
However, the way Jesus fed the five thousand shows us the way God works. しかし、イエス様が５０００人に食事を提供した方法は、神様の働き方を私たちに示しています。
He takes what we give to Him, no matter how insignificant it may seem, 神様は、私たちが神様に捧げるものを、それがどんなに取るに足らないものであっても受け取られ、
and He multiplies it to accomplish incredible things. それを何倍にも増やし、驚くべきことを成し遂げられるのです。
What are some things you can give to God for the spread of the Gospel and the advancement of His Kingdom? 福音の普及と神の御国の拡大のために、あなたが神様に捧げることができるものは何でしょうか？
We all have something that we can give to God. 私たちには皆、神様に捧げることができる何かがあります。
There is another incidence recorded for us, again in the Gospel of John, that shows how Andrew enabled others to come to Jesus. ヨハネの福音書には、アンデレがどのように他の人々をイエス様のもとに導いたかを示す、もう一つの出来事が記録されています。
John 12:20-23（ヨハネ１２章２０節—２３節）
20 Now there were some Greeks among those who were going up to worship at the feast; 21 these then came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida of Galilee, and began to ask him, saying, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” 22 Philip came and told Andrew; Andrew and Philip came and told Jesus. 23 And Jesus answered them, saying, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.” 20祭で礼拝するために上ってきた人々のうちに、数人のギリシヤ人がいた。21彼らはガリラヤのベツサイダ出であるピリポのところにきて、「君よ、イエスにお目にかかりたいのですが」と言って頼んだ。22ピリポはアンデレのところに行ってそのことを話し、アンデレとピリポは、イエスのもとに行って伝えた。23すると、イエスは答えて言われた、「人の子が栄光を受ける時がきた」。
Here, we see Philip and Andrew mentioned together again. ここでも、ピリポとアンデレが一緒に言及されています。
These Greeks who sought Jesus must have approached Philip because he had a Greek name. イエス様を慕ったギリシャ人たちは、ピリポがギリシャ系の名前だったことから、彼に近づいたのでしょう。
Maybe it was because of what he saw and experienced at the time of the feeding of the five thousand, that Philip brought the matter to Andrew. おそらく、ピリポは、五千人の給食で見たことや経験したことを思い出し、この件をアンデレに伝えたのでしょう。
Then, once again, we see Andrew bringing the matter to Jesus. そして、アンデレは、この件をイエス様に伝えたのです。

It is within this context that we understand Jesus’ answer to them. この文脈の中で、イエス様が彼らに与えた答えを私達は理解することができます。

Jesus’ ministry was primarily to the Jews. イエス様の宣教活動は主にユダヤ人を対象としていました。

Although the cross would be humiliating for Jesus, what would take place afterwards, that is His resurrection and ascension back to heaven would truly be to His glory. 十字架はイエス様にとって屈辱的なものではありましたが、その後に起こる、すなわちイエス様の復活と昇天は、まさにイエス様の栄光となるものでした。

In elementary schools, at least here in the U.S., children often have what is called a “show and tell” time. 少なくともここアメリカでは、小学校では、子供たちが「見せて話す」時間を持つことがよくあります。

In John MacArthur’s book titled Twelve Ordinary Men, he calls Andrew, “The Apostle of Small Things”. In his closing statements regarding Andrew, he writes: ジョン・マッカーサーの著書『１２人の普通の人たち』の中で、彼はアンデレを「小さなことの使徒」と呼んでいます。アンデレに関する締めくくりの言葉として、彼は次のように書いています。
