This morning, I want to talk about “Sharing Jesus’ Humble Heart”. 今朝は「イエスの謙虚な心を共有する」ということについてお話したいと思います。
As Christians, we are to live humbly together with our Lord Jesus Christ. クリスチャンとして、私達は主イエス・キリストと共に謙遜に生きます。
This is because Jesus our Lord is humble, and thus we too are to be humble. なぜなら私達の主であるイエス様が謙遜なお方ですから、私達も謙遜でなければならないからです。
This is one of the first and foremost things we must be in coming before God.このことは私達が神の前に出るにあたって、まず第一にしなければならないことの一つです。
And it is one of the first things Jesus addressed as part of what is called “The Beatitudes” found in Matthew 5:3-12. そして、これはマタイ５章３節−１２節にある「さいわい」と呼ばれるものの一つとして、イエス様が最初に取り上げたことです。
The Beatitudes deal with the characteristics of true righteousness that should be found in those who heed Jesus’ message to “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” (Matthew 4:17) このさいわいは「悔い改めよ、天国は近づいた」（マタイ４章１７節）というイエス様のメッセージを聞き入れた人々に見られるべき真の義の特徴を扱っています。
There are eight characteristics that Jesus lists that have to do with what we are as opposed to what we do. イエス様が挙げている八つの特性は、私達が何をするかということとは対照的に、私達が何であるかに関係しています。
These characteristics are all interrelated and progressive. これらの特性はすべて相互に関連し合い、進行するものです。
They are not natural characteristics, and they actually create a sharp distinction between the Christians and non-Christians in the things they admire and the things they seek. それらは自然な特性ではなく、実際にクリスチャンとノンクリスチャンの間で、賞賛されることと、求められるものとの間に明らかな区別を生み出します。
Over the next couple of months, Pastor Okura and I will take turns going over each of these Beatitudes. これから数ヶ月間、大倉牧師と私が交代で、このさいわいを一つ一つ見ていくことになります。
Let me read Matthew 5:1-12, and then focus on the first Beatitude. マタイによる福音書５章1１節～１２節を読んで、最初のさいわいに注目してみましょう。
Matthew 5:1-12（マタイ５章１‐１２節）
1 When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. 1イエスはこの群衆を見て、山に登り、座につかれると、弟子たちがみもとに近寄ってきた。2 He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying,3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 2そこで、イエスは口を開き、彼らに教えて言われた。3「こころの貧しい人たちは、さいわいである、天国は彼らのものである。4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.5 “Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth. 4悲しんでいる人たちは、さいわいである、彼らは慰められるであろう。5柔和な人たちは、さいわいである、彼らは地を受けつぐであろう。6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. 6義に飢えかわいている人たちは、さいわいである、彼らは飽き足りるようになるであろう。7あわれみ深い人たちは、さいわいである、彼らはあわれみを受けるであろう。 8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. 8心の清い人たちは、さいわいである、彼らは神を見るであろう。9平和をつくり出す人たちは、さいわいである、彼らは神の子と呼ばれるであろう。 10 “Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 10義のために迫害されてきた人たちは、さいわいである、天国は彼らのものである。11 “Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. 11わたしのために人々があなたがたをののしり、また迫害し、あなたがたに対し偽って様々の悪口を言う時には、あなたがたは、さいわいである。12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.12喜び、よろこべ、天においてあなたがたの受ける報いは大きい。あなたがたより前の預言者たちも、同じように迫害されたのである。
As you can see, these attitudes, which are righteous characteristics, are not readily found in or sought after by people in the world today. お分かりのように、これらの態度、すなわち義なる性質は、今の世の人々の中に探してもなかなか見つかりません。
This is because they are attitudes that can only be realized in relationship to Jesus Christ who makes us righteous. なぜなら、それらは私達を義としてくださるイエス・キリストとの関係の中でしか実現できない態度だからです。
Let us focus now on the first Beatitude that Jesus taught. ここで、イエス様が教えられた第一のさいわいに注目してみましょう。
Matthew 5:3（マタイ５章３節）
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
「こころの貧しい人たちは、さいわいである、天国は彼らのものである」。
Blessed! What a wonderful word for our ears to hear! 祝福された！ 私達にはなんと素晴らしく聞こえる言葉なのでしょう！
“Blessed” in the Greek means “Oh, how happy!” ギリシャ語で “Blessed “は「ああ、なんとさいわいな！」という意味です。
Yet, what follows seems counterintuitive to us. しかし、その後に続く言葉は、私達にとって常識に反するように思われます。
Blessed are the poor in spirit. 心の貧しい人達はさいわいである。
Not rich in spirit? Not those who are rich and have it all together? 心が豊かな人達ではない？ 豊かで全てを手に入れた人ではないのでしょうか？
Jesus who sees and knows the heart of all people, recognizes and proclaims the true condition of all of our hearts. すべての人の心を見て知っておられるイエス様は、私達すべての心の本当の状態を見分け、宣言しておられます。
The reality is that we are all poor in spirit. Yet, not all of us will admit to this.
現実、私達は皆、心が貧しいのです。 しかし、すべての人がこのことを認めるわけではありません。
To be poor in spirit literally means to be spiritually bankrupt. 精神的に貧しいというのは文字通り、精神的に破産しているということです。
You might say, “I am a truly spiritual person. I am a good and moral person.” 「私は本当に霊的な人間だ。私は善良で道徳的な人間です」とあなたは言うかもしれません。
Who are you comparing yourself with? あなたは誰と自分を比べているのでしょうか。
God’s standard is always Himself. 神様の基準は、いつも神様ご自身です。
The Bible records for us what God has declared of Himself in relationship to us: 聖書は、神様が私達との関係においてご自身について宣言されたことを、私達のために記録しています。
Isaiah 55:8-9（イザヤ５５章８—９節）
8 “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. 8わが思いは、あなたがたの思いとは異なり、わが道は、あなたがたの道とは異なっていると主は言われる。9 “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.” 9天が地よりも高いように、わが道は、あなたがたの道よりも高く、わが思いは、あなたがたの思いよりも高い。■Furthermore, the Bible declares:さらに聖書は宣言します。
Romans 3:10-12, 23（ローマ３章１０–１２、２３節）
“There is none righteous, not even one; 11 there is none who understands,
there is none who seeks for God; 「義人はいない、ひとりもいない。11悟りのある人はいない、神を求める人はいない。12 all have turned aside, together they have become useless; there is none who does good, there is not even one.” . . .
12すべての人は迷い出て、ことごとく無益なものになっている。善を行う者はいない、ひとりもいない。。。。23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 23すなわち、すべての人は罪を犯したため、神の栄光を受けられなくなっており、
Before God, we all far short of Him. 神の前では、私達は皆、神に遠く及ばないのです。
I have used this illustration before but I think it is appropriate once again. 以前にもこの例えを使ったことがありますが、今一度、それは適切な例えだと私は思います。
If our spiritual fitness before God were determined by how high we can jump, もし、神の前での私達の霊的な適性が、どれだけ高くジャンプできるかで決まるなら、then I can probably jump higher than some of you and others can jump higher than me. 私はおそらく皆さんの何人かの人より高くジャンプでき、他の人は私より高くジャンプできるはずです。
If I were to compare my jumping ability with an NBA player, I am sure I would lose.もし、私のジャンプ力をNBAの選手と比較したら、私は確かに負けるでしょう。
Yet, that is still a comparison between me and another person. しかし、それはただ私と他の人との比較にすぎません。
Yet, if we were to compare our spiritual fitness before God, it would be more like trying to jump from here to the moon! しかし、もし私達が神様の前で、自分の霊的な健康を比較するとしたら、それはここから月まで跳ぼうとしているようなものでしょう。
From that perspective, how high I jump and how high an NBA player jumps, does not seem that different. その観点からすれば、私がどれだけ高く跳ぼうが、NBAの選手がどれだけ高く跳ぼうが、それほど違いはないように思えます。
We all fall short of God’s standard of perfection of total goodness and righteousness.私たちは皆、神の完全な基準である完全な善と正義には及びません。
Let me give you another point of reference. もう一つ、参考になる点を挙げてみましょう。
Let me share with you what it is like to be spiritually rich. 霊的に豊かであることがどのようなものであるかをお話ししましょう。
Think of God the Holy Spirit. 聖霊である神様のことを考えましょう。
In Galatians 5:22-23, we are told of the fruit of the Spirit. ガラテヤ５章２２節−２３節に、御霊の実について書かれています。
Galatians 5:22-23（ガラテヤ５章２２—２３節）
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.22しかし、御霊の実は、愛、喜び、平和、寛容、慈愛、善意、忠実、23柔和、自制であって、これらを否定する律法はない。
In other words, these are characteristics that the Spirit at work in us will produce in us. 言い換えれば、これらは私達のうちに働いておられる御霊が、私達のうちに生み出す特徴なのです。
Now given what being spiritually rich looks like, that is having the fruit of the Spirit, what does the condition of your spirit look like? さて、霊的に豊かであること、つまり御霊の実を持つことがどのようなことであるかを考えると、あなたの霊の状態はどのようなものでしょうか？
What fills your heart, and how is that manifested in your daily living through your attitude and character? あなたの心は何で満たされていますか？そして、それはあなたの態度や性格を通して、日々の生活の中でどのように表れていますか？
Are you filled with love? How about joy and peace? あなたは愛で満たされていますか？ 喜びと平安はどうでしょうか？
What about patience, kindness, and goodness? 忍耐、親切、善意はどうですか？
How about faithfulness? Are you filled with gentleness? 誠実さはどうでしょうか？ あなたは優しさに満たされていますか？
Are you self-controlled? あなたは自制心がありますか？
Personally, my life before coming to Christ was void of the spiritually vibrant life described by the fruit of the Spirit. 個人的には、キリストのもとに来る前の私の人生には、御霊の実で表現されるような霊的に生き生きとした生活はありませんでした。
I had nothing to draw from my spiritual account. 私の霊的なアカウントから引き出せるものは何もなかったのです。
Even now, as a Christian saved by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ, イエス・キリストを信じる信仰によって神の恵みによって救われたクリスチャンである今でも、
I am humbled by my lack of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, when I rely on myself rather than on God. 神ではなく自分に頼っていると、愛、喜び、平和、忍耐、親切、善意、誠実、優しさ、自制心が欠けていることにより、謙虚にさせられます。
Indeed, if we are truly honest with ourselves, we are all spiritually bankrupt! We are all poor in spirit! 本当に自分に正直になれば、私達は皆、霊的に破産しているのです。 私達は皆、霊的に貧しいのです。
In relationship to God, we are spiritually in a state of total desperation. 神との関係において、私達は霊的に完全に絶望した状態にあるのです。
Again, this is the reality of our hearts. However, not all of us will admit to this. 繰り返しますが、これが私達の心の現実なのです。 しかし、全ての私達がこのことを認めるわけではありません。
Why? Because we are proud people. なぜか？ 私達は高慢な人間だからです。
To such people as us, Jesus declares: “Blessed are the poor in spirit!” そんな私達にイエス様は宣言します。「心の貧しい者は幸いである！」と。
Jesus is saying that those who know the true condition of their heart and can humbly come before God are truly blessed. イエス様は、自分の心の本当の状態を知り、謙虚に神の前に出ることができる人は、本当に祝福されると言っているのです。
Why? Because for them: “theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” なぜか？ なぜなら、彼らにはとって「天国は彼らのものだからです」。
Humility is at the core of Jesus’ heart. イエスの心の核心は「へりくだること」です。
All things begin here. すべてのことはここから始まるのです。
Jesus humbled Himself in coming into this world. イエスはこの世界に来るにあたって、ご自身を謙遜にされました。
The apostle Paul beautifully described Jesus’ humility in the following manner, and exhorts us to share that attitude with Jesus: 使徒パウロは、イエスの謙遜を次のように見事に表現し、私達にその姿勢をイエスと共有するよう勧めています。
Philippians 2:5-11（ピリピ２章５—１１節）
5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus, 5キリスト・イエスにあっていだいているのと同じ思いを、あなたがたの間でも互に生かしなさい。6 who, although He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped, 6キリストは、神のかたちであられたが、神と等しくあることを固守すべき事とは思わず、7 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men. 7かえって、おのれをむなしうして僕のかたちをとり、人間の姿になられた。その有様は人と異ならず、8 Being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 8おのれを低くして、死に至るまで、しかも十字架の死に至るまで従順であられた。9 For this reason also, God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, 9それゆえに、神は彼を高く引き上げ、すべての名にまさる名を彼に賜わった。10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 10それは、イエスの御名によって、天上のもの、地上のもの、地下のものなど、あらゆるものがひざをかがめ、11 and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.11また、あらゆる舌が、「イエス・キリストは主である」と告白して、栄光を父なる神に帰するためである。
There is no one who has walked on the face of this earth in all of history that was more humble than Jesus. すべての歴史の中で、この地球の表面を歩いた人の中で、イエス様ほど謙虚だった人はいません。
This is because there was no one more exalted as Jesus, who is the Son of God and who has left the glory of heaven, to live among us as one of us. なぜなら、神の子であり、天の栄光を離れて、私達の一人として私達の間で生きたイエス様ほど、高貴な方はいなかったからです。
James 4:10（ヤコブ４章１０節）
Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.
主のみまえにへりくだれ。そうすれば、主は、あなたがたを高くして下さるであろう。
We see the reality of this exhortation being manifested through Jesus: His humbling of Himself preceding His exaltation. 私達はこの勧めの現実を、高められる前に、自らを低くしているイエス様を通して見ることができます。
The Bible is full of people poor in spirit, who humbly came before God and received His grace. 聖書には謙虚に神の前に立ち、神の恵みを受けた心の貧しい人達がたくさん登場します。
Let us learn from the example of two of these people: David in the Old Testament and Peter in the New Testament.旧約聖書のダビデと新約聖書のペテロから学びましょう。
David was the king of Israel and he loved God. ダビデはイスラエルの王であり、神を愛していました。
Under his reign, God had blessed him with great power and riches.その治世において、神様は大きな力と富をもって彼を祝福されました。
Yet, in a moment of giving into the lust of the eye, the lust of the flesh, and the boastful pride of life, David committed adultery and murder and tried to hide the whole matter. しかし、ダビデは目の欲、肉の欲、そして人生の誇りに陥った瞬間、姦淫と殺人を犯し、そのすべてを隠蔽しようとしました。
Because God loved David, He did not let him be. 神様はダビデを愛しておられたので、そのままにはなさいませんでした。
He confronted David’s actions, and more specifically his heart, through the prophet Nathan. 預言者ナタンを通して、ダビデの行動、特にその心に立ちはだかったのです。
In Psalm 51, we see David’s response to God’s correction. 詩篇５１篇には、神の叱責に対するダビデの応答が記されています。
Psalm 51:1-4, 9-10, 16-17（詩篇５１篇１—４、９—１０，１６—１７節）
1 Be gracious to me, O God, according to Your lovingkindness; according to the greatness of Your compassion blot out my transgressions. 1神よ、あなたのいつくしみによって、わたしをあわれみ、あなたの豊かなあわれみによって、わたしのもろもろのとがをぬぐい去ってください。2 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin. 3 For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. 2わたしの不義をことごとく洗い去り、わたしの罪からわたしを清めてください。3わたしは自分のとがを知っています。わたしの罪はいつもわたしの前にあります。4 Against You, You only, I have sinned and done what is evil in Your sight, so that You are justified when You speak and blameless when You judge. . . . 4わたしはあなたにむかい、ただあなたに罪を犯し、あなたの前に悪い事を行いました。それゆえ、あなたが宣告をお与えになるときは正しく、あなたが人をさばかれるときは誤りがありません。。。。9 Hide Your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquities. 10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. . . . 9み顔をわたしの罪から隠し、わたしの不義をことごとくぬぐい去ってください。10神よ、わたしのために清い心をつくり、わたしのうちに新しい、正しい霊を与えてください。。。。16 For You do not delight in sacrifice, otherwise I would give it; You are not pleased with burnt offering. 16あなたはいけにえを好まれません。たといわたしが燔祭をささげてもあなたは喜ばれないでしょう。17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and a contrite heart, O God, You will not despise.17神の受けられるいけにえは砕けた魂です。神よ、あなたは砕けた悔いた心をかろしめられません。
David was humbled. He realized his spiritually bankrupt state, and confessed his sinfulness before God. ダビデはへりくだりました。 彼は自分の霊的な破産状態を悟り、神様の前で自分の罪深さを告白しました。
God in His mercy and grace toward David, forgave him, and although David still had to reap the consequences of his sinfulness, his loving relationship with God was restored. 神様はダビデに対する憐れみと恵みで彼を赦し、ダビデは自分の罪の結果を刈り取らなければなりませんでしたが、神との愛の関係は回復されたのです。
Peter was chosen by Jesus to be an apostle. ペテロは、イエス様によって使徒として選ばれました。
He was also given the responsibility by Jesus to lead the Church after Jesus’ death, resurrection, and ascension back to heaven. また、イエスの死と復活、そして昇天の後、教会を導く責任もイエス様から与えられました。
Peter was a strong fisherman before meeting Jesus. He also had strong leadership qualities. ペテロは、イエス様に出会う前は強い漁師でした。 また、強いリーダーシップの資質も持っていました。
How Peter was first called to follow Jesus is recorded for us in the Gospels. ペテロがどのようにしてイエス様に従うように召されたかは、福音書に記録されています。
Let us look at the account that is given in the Gospel of Luke. ルカによる福音書に書かれていることを見てみましょう。
Luke 5:1-11（ルカ５章１—１１節）
1 Now it happened that while the crowd was pressing around Him and listening to the word of God, He was standing by the lake of Gennesaret; 1さて、群衆が神の言を聞こうとして押し寄せてきたとき、イエスはゲネサレ湖畔に立っておられたが、2 and He saw two boats lying at the edge of the lake; but the fishermen had gotten out of them and were washing their nets. 2そこに二そうの小舟が寄せてあるのをごらんになった。漁師たちは、舟からおりて網を洗っていた。3 And He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little way from the land. And He sat down and began teaching the people from the boat. 3その一そうはシモンの舟であったが、イエスはそれに乗り込み、シモンに頼んで岸から少しこぎ出させ、そしてすわって、舟の中から群衆にお教えになった。4 When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” 4話がすむと、シモンに「沖へこぎ出し、網をおろして漁をしてみなさい」と言われた。5 Simon answered and said, “Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but I will do as You say and let down the nets.” 5シモンは答えて言った、「先生、わたしたちは夜通し働きましたが、何も取れませんでした。しかし、お言葉ですから、網をおろしてみましょう」。6 When they had done this, they enclosed a great quantity of fish, and their nets began to break; 6そしてそのとおりにしたところ、おびただしい魚の群れがはいって、網が破れそうになった。7 so they signaled to their partners in the other boat for them to come and help them. And they came and filled both of the boats, so that they began to sink. 7そこで、もう一そうの舟にいた仲間に、加勢に来るよう合図をしたので、彼らがきて魚を両方の舟いっぱいに入れた。そのために、舟が沈みそうになった。8 But when Simon Peter saw that, he fell down at Jesus’ feet, saying, “Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man!” 8これを見てシモン・ペテロは、イエスのひざもとにひれ伏して言った、「主よ、わたしから離れてください。わたしは罪深い者です」。9 For amazement had seized him and all his companions because of the catch of fish which they had taken; 9彼も一緒にいた者たちもみな、取れた魚がおびただしいのに驚いたからである。10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, 10シモンの仲間であったゼベダイの子ヤコブとヨハネも、同様であった。すると、イエスがシモンに言われた、“Do not fear, from now on you will be catching men.” 11 When they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed Him.「恐れることはない。今からあなたは人間をとる漁師になるのだ」。11そこで彼らは舟を陸に引き上げ、いっさいを捨ててイエスに従った。
Peter was humbled. He realized His true self, that he was a sinful man. ペテロは謙虚になりました。 彼は本当の自分、自分が罪深い人間であることを悟ったのです。
Jesus did not go away from Peter, but called him to change his ways and to follow Him. イエス様はペテロから離れることなく、ペテロに道を変え、イエス様に従うようにと呼びかけました。
Peter did so. He was blessed because he acknowledged he was poor in spirit. ペテロはその通りにしました。 彼は、自分が心の貧しい者であることを認めたので、祝福されたのです。
He became Jesus’ apostle, who as a recipient of the kingdom of heaven, declared on the Day of Pentecost filled with the Holy Spirit, 彼はイエス様の使徒となり、天の御国を受ける者として、ペンテコステの日に聖霊に満たされたことを宣言したのです。
Acts 2:38（使徒行伝２章３８節）
“Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; 「悔い改めなさい。そして、あなたがたひとりびとりが罪のゆるしを得るために、イエス・キリストの名によって、バプテスマを受けなさい。and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”そうすれば、あなたがたは聖霊の賜物を受けるであろう」。
When we repent and turn to Jesus Christ in faith, we receive the forgiveness of our sins, and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 私達が悔い改めて信仰をもってイエス・キリストに立ち返る時、私達は罪の赦しを受け、聖霊の賜物を受けます。
We are also exhorted to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, because that is a public profession of our faith in Him. またイエス・キリストへの信仰を公けに表明することになるので、イエス・キリストの名によってバプテスマを受けるようにと勧められます。
The riches of the Spirit of God will flow into our poor spirit, and we will be made fit for the kingdom of heaven. そうすれば、神の霊の豊かさが私達の貧しい霊に注がれ、私達は天の御国にふさわしい者とされるでしょう。
Many of us are familiar with the hymn “Amazing Grace”. 聖歌「アメイジング・グレイス」（おどろくばかりの）をご存知の方は多いと思います。
In fact, some may even consider it one of the most famous hymns of all time. 実際、最も有名な聖歌のひとつと考える人もいるかもしれません。
The lyrics to the hymn were written by John Newton (1725-1807). この聖歌の歌詞はジョン・ニュートン（1725-1807）が書きました。
Newton began his career as a sailor and slave trader, and even the captain of a slave trading ship. ニュートンは、船乗り、奴隷商人、さらには奴隷商船の船長としてキャリアをスタートしました。
However, after a dramatic conversion to faith in Jesus Christ, he became an Anglican minister and outspoken abolitionist. しかし、イエス・キリストへの信仰に劇的な変化を遂げた後、英国国教会の牧師となり、率直に奴隷廃止論を唱えたのです。
“Amazing Grace” was written by Newton as a heartfelt response to the amazing grace that God had shown to him. 「アメイジング・グレイス」は、ニュートンが、神が自分に示してくれた驚くべき恵みに対する心からの応答として書いたものです。
The first verse of that song speaks of him coming before God as one who was poor in spirit. その歌の最初の節では、彼が心の貧しい者として神の前に来られたことが語られています。

Newton has left behind many published works, but probably his most enduring legacy has been his penning of the lyrics to “Amazing Grace”. ニュートンは多くの著作を残しましたが、最も不滅の遺産は「アメイジング・グレイス」の歌詞を書き残したことでしょう。
Here is one of Newton’s notable quotes: “This is faith: a renouncing of everything we are apt to call our own and relying wholly upon the blood, righteousness, and intercession of Jesus.” ニュートンの名言の一つを紹介します。「信仰とは、自分のものと呼びがちなものをすべて捨て去り、イエスの血と義と執り成しにすべてを委ねることである。」
Newton truly understood that his salvation rested solely on God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ. ニュートンは、自分の救いは、イエス・キリストを信じる信仰による神の恵みだけにあることを、本当に理解していたのです。
Indeed, the apostle Paul confirmed this truth in his letter to the Ephesians. 実に、使徒パウロはエペソの信徒への手紙の中で、この真理を確認したのです。

I love Jesus’ kind words to us found in Matthew 11:28-30. マタイによる福音書１１章２８節～３０節にある、イエス様の私達への優しい言葉が好きです。
Matthew 11:28-30（マタイ１１章２８—３０節）
28 “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. 28すべて重荷を負うて苦労している者は、わたしのもとにきなさい。あなたがたを休ませてあげよう。29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 29わたしは柔和で心のへりくだった者であるから、わたしのくびきを負うて、わたしに学びなさい。そうすれば、あなたがたの魂に休みが与えられるであろう。30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”30わたしのくびきは負いやすく、わたしの荷は軽いからである」。
If you are someone who has been trying to be strong and good in your own strength, あなたが、自分の力で強くなろう、良くなろうと思っているのなら、or think you are so good that you do not need God, listen to Jesus’ invitation to you. あるいは、もし自分は優れているから神様は必要ないと思っているなら、イエス様の招きに耳を傾けてみてください。
There is nothing more freeing than to find rest in Jesus. イエス様に安息を見出すことほど、自由なことはありません。
Learn from Him true humility that will give you rest for your soul. あなたの魂を休ませる真の謙遜をイエスから学びましょう。
It is precisely what Jesus says: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs in the kingdom of heaven.” それはまさにイエスが言われるように「心の貧しい人達はさいわいである、天国は彼らのものである」ということです。
Kingdom hearted people are poor in spirit, who humbly seek the riches of heaven that God offers through His Son Jesus Christ. 御国の心を持つ人は、神が御子イエス・キリストを通して与えられる天の富を謙虚に求める、心の貧しい人達なのです。
If we are going to share the heart of Jesus, then we need to begin by sharing His humble heart. もし私達がイエス様の心を分かち合うつもりなら、イエス様の謙遜な心を分かち合うことから始める必要があります。
In Jesus’ time, the Pharisees did not seek Him because they were not humble. イエス様の時代、パリサイ人たちは謙遜でなかったので、イエス様を求めませんでした。
The Pharisees did not recognize their need for repentance since they felt themselves to be fully righteous. パリサイ人達は、自分達が完全に正しいと思っていたので、悔い改めの必要性を認識していなかったのです。
However, to be poor in spirit is to have a right and proper evaluation of oneself in relationship to God. しかし、心が貧しいということは、神との関係において、自分自身を正しく評価することです。
So, one who is poor in spirit is totally dependent upon God for mercy and salvation. ですから、心の貧しい人は、あわれみと救いを完全に神に依存しているのです。
Let me end with a parable Jesus told in regard to this. このことについてイエス様が語られたたとえ話をもって、今日のメッセージを終えたいと思います。
