今日のメッセージタイトルは「エノク：６５歳からの生き方」としました。今日の私たちにとりまして６５歳という年齢はどんな年齢でしょうか。リタイアメントの前後かもしれません。それなりに人生の喜びや悲しみを一通り、経験した年齢。
人間の裏表を知り、世の中の厳しさも知り、子を送り出し、親を看取り、自分の最後もちらちらっと脳裏に思い浮かぶ。どのようにして、この人生を閉じていこうかというようなことも考えることでしょう。そのような時にエノクは決心したのです。これから私は神と共に歩み、神に喜ばれるように生きよう。
今日、お伝えしたいことは、私達はいつでも生き方を変えることができるということです。それは、私達は誰しも人生をやり直せるということを意味します。このことに遅い、早いはありません。神様は私達の人生にそのきっかけをくださっています。その語りかけはいつもあります。
それはエノクのように子供が誕生した時なのかもしれません。願っていた学校に入学できない時なのかもしれません。事業に失敗した時かもしれません。誰かの葬儀に出席しているときかもしれません。それがなんであれ、神様は「その時」、私達に語りかけるのです。その時に神様は私達に「私に立ち返れ」と語りかけます。神様は私達にチャンスを与えてくれているのです。このチャンスを逃さない人はさいわいだと思います（大倉）。

エノク：６５歳からの生き方
聖書の中には色々な人間が出てきます。その誕生から最期に息を引き取るまでの人生が、ほぼ全て描かれている人。一つの出来事に関わっているという理由で、その時だけ出てくる人。ただ名前だけが記録されている人と様々です。
その中で今日、私達が見ようとしているエノクという人はとてもユニークな人です。聖書中に彼がどんな人間であったかということを記している箇所は多くありません。今日は彼について書かれている三つの聖書の言葉を見ていきたいと思います。最初に創世記５章１８節、
「ヤレドは１６２歳になって、エノクを生んだ」
そして、その後の創世記５章２２節から２４節、
「エノクはメトセラを生んだ後、三百年、神と共に歩み、男子と女子を生んだ。エノクの年は合わせて３６５歳であった。エノクは神と共に歩み、神が彼を取られたので、いなくなった」という箇所。
さらに彼の名前は旧約聖書の創世記に続き、新約聖書のヘブル１１章５節、６節に再び、出てきます。
５信仰によって、エノクは死を見ないように天に移された。神がお移しになったので、彼は見えなくなった。彼が移される前に、神に喜ばれた者と、あかしされていたからである。 ６信仰がなくては、神に喜ばれることはできない。なぜなら、神に来る者は、神のいますことと、ご自分を求める者に報いて下さることとを、必ず信じるはずだからである。
このところから今日はエノクについて、三つのことを見ていきたいと思います。まず最初に「エノクの境遇」ということです。
「ヤレドは１６２歳になって、エノクを生んだ」（１８）
エノクについて聖書は多くを語りません。しかしながら、この一行の記録には私達が想像できる多くのことがあります。それはエノクにも父母がいたということであり、彼には家族がいたということです。
創世記はアダムとエバという男と女から始まったことを記録しています。すなわちその始まりは一組の夫婦であり、そこから家族、そしてそれがやがて民族となっていく、その変遷が記されています。
先週は一米先生がカインとアベルというアダムとエバの息子達について、お話しくださいました。人間は人類二代目にして、兄が同じ母から生まれた弟を殺すという絶望的なことをしました。そして、その人間の性質というものは、罪として私達にも受け継がれているのだということが聖書のいうところです。
その聖書、創世記において、ノア以前の人間の年齢を読みますと、皆さんはびっくりすると思います。創世記によりますと、エノクの父ヤレドは１６２歳でエノクを生み、その後９６２歳まで生きたというのです。この人間の寿命はノアの洪水まで続きます。
しかし、ノアの洪水による地球環境の激変により、それ以降の人の寿命は１２０年になると聖書は記しており（創世記６章３節）、この数字は今日、人が生きる寿命のほぼ限界となっています。
もし、私がこれからあと９００年生きなければならないということになりましたら、私はその長さに圧倒され、その先の長さを思う時に疲れてしまうのではないかと思います。
皆さん、いかがですか。これから今までの人生をあと１０回、繰り返すとしたら、このことを望む人はいますか？野球は９回までだから楽しいのであって、９０回まであるゲームは誰も見たくはありません。このように考えますなら、寿命が与えられていることにも神様の愛がこめられているようにさえ思えてきます。８０年ほどの寿命は、私達が経験する喜怒哀楽のほとんどをが含まれる、ほどよい年月だと思うのは私だけでしょうか。
この創世記の５章には「アダム以降に誰々が生まれ、何年生きて死んだ」というようなことが列挙されています。そして、それを計算すれば、エノクはアダムから数えて七代目の人であったことが分かります。
アダムは９３０歳で死んだと聖書は記していますから、計算していきます時に、エノクの時代には、まだアダムは生きていたと思われます。すなわち、七代の家族が互いに親族として生活していたことが、うかが知ることができます。
皆さん、想像してみてください。そこにはおじいちゃん、おばあちゃん、曾じいちゃん、曾ばあちゃんがいます。さらに、もはやなんと呼べばいいのかわからない、その先代の４、５組のおじいちゃん、おばあちゃんがおり、その兄弟がおり、おびただしい数の子供や孫がいる。以前、曾孫がいるご高齢の方と話していたのですが、「孫まではいいけど、その先は、もう誰が、誰なんだか分かりません」と言っておられました。
七代もの血族がいれば、もはや顔も名前も一致しないでしょう。さらに人間は七代もさかのぼれば、その中にはあらゆる人間が含まれているわけで、中には穏やかな人もいれば、問題ばかり起こす人もいたことでしょう。私達の先祖も、もし１０代もさかのぼれば、その中には人を殺めたような人もいるかもしれません。
とりわけ親族というのは互いの関係が近いがゆえに、起きてくる問題も深刻となります。実際に、創世記５０章に書かれている問題のほとんどは夫婦、親子、子供達、兄弟姉妹同士、親戚の間で起きた問題なのです。人間は人類二代にして兄が弟を撲殺しているのです。
そのような意味において、エノクも長い間、このおびただしい数の親族の間で揉まれて生きたに違いありません。私達は自分の父母の介護のことを考えますが、彼らは七代先の家族のことまで考えたことでしょう。いったいどんなやりとりがそこにあったことでしょうか。
エノクの父ヤレドは１６２歳でエノクを生み、９６２歳まで生きたと申し上げました。エノクはメトセラを６５歳で生み、その後、３００年生きたと言いますから、エノクは３６５年、生きました。
エノクは死を見ずに神のもとに行ったと創世記は記していますが、このことが実際にどのようなことだったのか、私達には想像する以外ありません。ただ確かなことはエノクの父ヤレドは、自分よりも先に息子エノクを失ったのです。
息子エノクを失った父ヤレドは、それからさらに４３５年を生きたのです。ヤレドは親よりも先に子がいなくなるという悲しみを知っていました。この親の悲しみは昔も今も変わらないでしょう。エノクはこのような「境遇」で育ち、人生を送ったということをまず心に留めましょう。
二つめのことを見ていきましょう。それは「エノクの生きた環境」ということです。創世記５章の系図によりますと、このエノクはメトセラを生み、メトセラはレメクを生み、レメクがノアを生んだと書いています。
そう、あのノアの箱舟を造ったノアです。ノアはエノクが天に移されてから６９年後に生まれました。ここから想像できますことは、エノクはノアが生きた時代とほぼ同じ光景を見ながら、生きたということです。
それでは、そのノアが生きた時代とはどんな時代だったのでしょうか。聖書はその時代について創世記６章に記しています。
５主は人の悪が地にはびこり、すべてその心に思いはかることが、いつも悪い事ばかりであるのを見られた。６主は地の上に人を造ったのを悔いて、心を痛め、７「わたしが創造した人を地のおもてからぬぐい去ろう。人も獣も、這うものも、空の鳥までも。わたしは、これらを造ったことを悔いる」と言われた（５－６）
そして、さらに１１節以降には、こう記されています。「時に世は神の前に乱れて、暴虐が地に満ちた。１２神が地を見られると、それは乱れていた。すべての人が地の上でその道を乱したからである。１３そこで神はノアに言われた、「わたしは、すべての人を絶やそうと決心した。彼らは地を暴虐で満たしたから、わたしは彼らを地とともに滅ぼそう」
この後にすぐ神様はノアに箱舟を作るようにと命じているのです。このことはエノクが生きた時代も、人が考えることは常に悪いことばかり、神の前に乱れ、暴虐が地に満ちた時代であったということです。当時の人間は一生の間、５００年も、６００年も悪いことをし続けたということになりましょう。神はその人間の姿を見て、この者達にはもはや長寿は必要ないと、大洪水によって地球環境を変え、人の寿命を大幅に減らしたのかもしれません。
その時代はまだ神の律法が人間に与えられていませんから、ある意味、無法の時代です。それこそ、自らの命は自分で守る、無防備では外も歩けない、あらゆる暴虐が昼夜問わずに起きていた時代だったのでしょう。
さらには誰かが邪悪なことをしても、それを罰とする定めはなく、邪悪なことがし放題の時代です。まさしく、同じように悪に染まり、悪いことをしなければ家族を養うことができないような、そんな暗黒の時代です。エノクはそのような「環境」の只中を生きたのです。最後のことを見ていきましょう。それは「境遇と環境を克服する信仰」ということです。創世記５章２２節、２３節はエノクについて不思議なことを書いています。
「エノクは６５歳になって、メトセラを生んだ。エノクはメトセラを生んだ後、三百年、神と共に歩み、男子と女子を生んだ。エノクの年は合わせて３６５歳であった。エノクは神と共に歩み、神が彼を取られたので、いなくなった」
この後、２４節はこのことについて、さらに簡単な説明を加えます。
「信仰によって、エノクは死を見ないように天に移された。神がお移しになったので、彼は見えなくなった。彼が移される前に、神に喜ばれた者と、あかしされていたからである」（ヘブル１１章５節）
ここまでエノクの生い立ちと環境についてお話ししました。神が救いようのない邪悪を見て、滅ぼすとまで言わせた人間世界の中でエノクは神と共に歩み、喜ばれた者とあかしされたというのです。
ここには私達が注意深く読まなければ読み過ごしてしまうことが書かれています。創世記は「エノクはメトセラを生んだ後に、３００年、神と共に歩んだ」（５章２２節）と記しているのです。
すなわち、彼は６５歳でメトセラを生んでいますから、それまでの６５年間、彼は普通の人となんら変わらず、生きていたということです。しかし、メトセラが生まれてから、彼は神と共に歩み、神に喜ばれる生き方をしたというのです。
彼が６５歳の時に何があったのかは分かりません。６５年といえば、今の人間の人生に換算すれば、長い年月です。私はまだその歳にさえ達していません。そのような長い年月、彼は神なき者として生きていたようです。
周りの環境がそうであったように、彼もそれなりに悪に手を染めて生きていたのかもしれません。しかし、彼がその最初の子、メトセラを授かった時から、彼は神と共に歩み始めたというのです。私達が分かること、そのことが彼に何かしらの決断をうながしたということです。
かつてサンディエゴにいらっしゃった日本人のご夫妻に初子が与えられました。その父親は博士号をもつ科学者でした。 彼は我が子の誕生が、自分が信仰をもつ大きなきっかけになったと証しました。
彼はとても優秀な学者ですが、その彼が、我が子が妻の胎に宿されたと知った時に、神様を信じたというのです。エノクも初めて、わが子を抱いた時に、自分の力を超えた神様を信じ、その時から神と人生を歩み始めたのかもしれません。
この子の目に私の悪を焼きつけてはならないという、悔い改めと回心があったのかもしれません。自分以外に頼りとなる者がいない、我が子の寝顔を見て、彼は自分の生き方を変えるべきだと決断したのかもしれません。
６５歳まで彼は「神と共に歩む人」ではなかったのです・・・。主にある皆さん、生まれつき「神と共に歩む人」はいません。６５歳まで彼の心に「神を喜ばそう」という思いはありませんでした。主にある皆さん、生まれつき「神を喜ばす人はいません」
しかし、彼はこの時から自分の生き方を変えることを自ら決断し、神と共に残りの人生を歩んだのです。その時から彼は神を喜ばす人生を歩み始めたのです。皆さん、このエノクの新たな生き方は私達に語りかけます。

その時に私達は神を信じるのです。そして、その信仰は私達の「境遇」と「環境」を超えるのです。私の育ちは良くなく、生きてきた環境はこうだったから、どうせ駄目だ。確かに、全てを自力でするのなら、これ以上は無理だということもあるでしょう。
しかし、私は今、私達の人生に介入してくださる、無から有を生み出す神についてお話ししているのです。今まで駄目だったから、これからも駄目だということではないのです。こんな自分が変わるはずはない。そのような諦めを超える力が信仰にはあるのです。
私は行けなかったのですが、先週、エンジェルス・スタジアムでハーベスト・クルセードという伝道集会がありました。その集会のスピーカーはハーベスト・クリスチャン・フェローシップの主任牧師であるグレッグ・ロリーでした。昨年７月にはグレッグ牧師の教会が南カリフォルニアのビーチで４５００人もの人たちへの洗礼式をもったと話題となりました。神様はグレッグ師を用いてくださっています。
その彼はどんな人生を生きてきたのでしょうか。その人生には色々なことがありました。彼の両親は彼が幼い時に離婚をしました。最初の離婚の後に彼の母親は再婚し、その後、彼女は離婚を繰り返し、グレッグ牧師には五人のステップ・ファザーがいました。彼が９歳の時、彼の母は既に何度か離婚をしていましたが、その時のステップ・ファザーはとても優しく、彼が長年待ち望んでいた安定した生活を送っていました。
しかし、ある秋の日、彼が外で遊んでいると、家の前にリムジンが止まりました。そして、家の中から荷物がそのリムジンに運び出されました。彼は母に聞きました。「どこに行くの？」「ハワイよ」。おそるおそる、母に聞きました。「お父さんは？」彼女は答えました。「お父さんは一緒に来ないの」。
ハワイまでの長いフライトの間、彼はお父さんだった人の顔を次々と思い浮かべていました。ホノルルの空港につくと次の父が待っており、ハワイでの生活が始まりました。結論から言いますと、結局、このハワイでの生活もこの男性の母への暴力によって破局します。それから母と彼は南カリフォルニアに帰ってきます。やがて彼は成長し、それまでの生活に対する反抗から、自暴自棄な生活をしていきます。あらゆるドラッグに手を染めていき、生活は荒れすさんでいきます。
自分ではそんなところから抜け出したい、そんな生活はうんざりだと思いながらも、その生活を抜け出すことができないのです。彼はそのままの生活を続ければ彼は命を失うかもしれないような人生を送ります。しかし、そのような彼が色々なところを通りながら、イエス・キリストに出会うのです。
イエス・キリストに出会うと言ったって、彼は２０００年前の人でしょう。どうやって会うの？と思われるかもしれません。全くその通りです。
グレッグは２０００年前に起きた、キリストの十字架を信じることによって、彼は人生の主をイエス・キリストにして生きていく決断をしたのです。実にグレッグ・ローリー牧師は自分の境遇と環境を信仰によって乗り越えたのです。彼は神様と共に人生を歩み、神様は彼の歩みを喜ばれました。
６５歳周辺の皆さん、ティーンの皆さん、私達の人生において本当にフォーカスすべきことは多くありません。いや、この二つに尽きるのです。神と共に人生を歩み、神に喜ばれるように生きる。
このように生きたエノクに対して、神様は彼を、死を見ないまま、天に引き上げたのです。このことは人類において極めて稀なケースです。しかし、それほどまでにこのエノクの生き方を神様は喜ばれたのです。私達がこの二つに徹して生きるのなら、私達の人生に何が起きるのでしょうか。
私は皆さんお一人お一人の歩んでこられた人生を知りませんが、私達が育った境遇に関して言えば、不可抗力なものがたくさんあったことでしょう。グレッグの幼児期の出来事は彼がどうこうできるようなものではありません。その日々を経て、彼が人を信頼して、真っ直ぐに生きることは至難の業です。しかし、彼はイエス・キリストに出会いました。人にはできない、しかし、主イエスは私達の人生を変えることができます。
エノクは６５歳になって、神と共に歩み始め、神に喜ばれる者となり、天に携え上げられたということを心に留めましょう！私達の信仰は、私達の境遇と環境を乗り越えさせるものであるということを知りましょう！
もし、この世界に神がいるのなら、私達人間に与えられている最善の生き方はこの二つ以外、何がありますでしょうか。神と共に人生を歩み、神に喜ばれる日々を送る。とてもシンプルな生き方です。
自分の欲するままに歩む人生、自分を喜ばせようと必死な人生。聞こえはいい、しかし、なぜ、こんなにまでその人生の歯車は狂ってしまうのか。私達はその道で見聞きしてきたことを知っているはず。この道の先に待ち受けている諸々の問題を知っているはず。
なぜ、私達は自分だけを喜ばせようとして日々を送るのか。私達はその先に待ち受けている虚しさを知っているはず。エノクのように、グレッグ牧師のように、その日、その時から私達は新しい人生を歩み出すことができるのです。
今日、私達はこのことの決断をしようではありませんか。その決断が昔のものであり、それが既に埃をかぶっているような決断となっているのなら、その埃りを払い、もう一度、決断しようではありませんか。このことを自分のみならず、家族の決断とし、掲げようではありませんか。
神様はあなたと共にはたらいて、あなたの人生をお導きになります。神様はあなたが新しい人生を歩むことに対して、いつも備えがあります。アダムの呪いの鎖を、私達の所で打ち砕き、キリストに連なる鎖を次の世代に繋いでいこうではありませんか。そのために神様が待ち望まれていること、それは私達の決断なのです。
ヘブル３章７節、８節、
7だから、聖霊が言っているように、「きょう、あなたがたがみ声を聞いたなら、8荒野における試錬の日に、神にそむいた時のように、あなたがたの心を、かたくなにしてはいけない。お祈りしましょう。
Enoch: How to live from age 65

There are many different kinds of people in the Bible. People whose lives are described almost entirely from their birth to their last breath. Some appear only because they are involved in a single event. And there are even people who only have their names recorded.
Among them, the man we are going to look at today, Enoch, is a very unique person. There are not many places in the Bible that describe what kind of person he was. Today I would like to look at three Bible verses about him. First, Genesis 5:18,
18 When Jared had lived 162 years, he became the father of Enoch.
And then Genesis 5:22-24,
22 After he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked faithfully with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters. 23 Altogether, Enoch lived a total of 365 years. 24 Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.
Furthermore, after his name appears in the Old Testament in Genesis, it comes out again in the New Testament in Hebrews 11:5, 6.
5 By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: “He could not be found, because God had taken him away.” For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God. 6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
From these verses, I would like to look at three things about Enoch today. The first one is “Enoch’s Circumstances”.
When Jared had lived 162 years, he became the father of Enoch. (Genesis 5:18)
The Bible does not say much about Enoch. However, there is much we can imagine in this recorded verse. That is that Enoch also had parents, and that he had a family.
Genesis records the beginning with a man and a woman, Adam and Eve. In other words, the beginning was a couple, and from there it became a family, which eventually became a nation, and that transition is recorded.
Last week, Pastor Ichibei preached about Cain and Abel, the sons of Adam and Eve. Just in the second generation of mankind, the elder brother out of desperation killed his younger brother, who was born of the same mother. The Bible says that human nature is inherited by us as sin.
In the book of Genesis, you may be surprised to read the ages of people before Noah. According to Genesis, Jared, Enoch’s father, became the father of Enoch at the age of 162 and lived to be 962 years old. This human lifespan lasted until the Flood at the time of Noah.
However, due to the drastic changes in the earth’s environment caused by that Flood, the Bible states that the human lifespan after that will be 120 years (Genesis 6:3), which is almost the limit of the human lifespan we live today.
If I have to live another 900 years, I would be overwhelmed by the length of my life, and I would become weary at the thought of the length of time ahead of me.
How about you all? If you were to repeat your life until now, 10 more times, who would want this? Baseball is fun because it lasts until the 9th inning, and no one wants to watch a game that lasts until the 90th inning. If you think about it in this way, it even seems that God’s love can be found in the fact that we are given a life span. Am I the only one who thinks that a life span of about 80 years is a reasonable amount of time that includes most of the joys, sorrows, and happiness we experience?
Here in Genesis chapter 5, there is a list of things like “who was born after Adam, how many years did he live and die”. And if we calculate it, we find that Enoch was the seventh generation counting from Adam.
Since the Bible says that Adam died at the age of 930, it is likely that Adam was still alive at the time of Enoch. In other words, we can see that seven generations of the family lived as kin to each other.
Please imagine. There is Grandpa, Grandma, Great Grandpa, and Great Grandma. Then there are the four or five sets of grandparents who preceded them, who we no longer know what to call them, their siblings, and a great number of children and grandchildren. I was once talking with an elderly person who had great-grandchildren, and he said, “Up to the grandchildren is fine, but beyond that, I don’t know who or what they are anymore.”
With seven generations of blood relatives, it would be difficult to match faces and names. Furthermore, if we go back seven generations of human beings, we will find all kinds of people among them, some of whom may have been gentle and some of whom may have caused nothing but trouble. Our ancestors, if we go back 10 generations, there may have been someone who had killed a person.
Especially in the case of relatives, problems can be serious because of the close relationship between people. In fact, most of the problems described in the 50 chapters of Genesis are problems that occurred between husband and wife, parents and children, children, brothers and sisters, and relatives. In two generations of human beings, an elder brother beat his younger brother to death.
In this sense, Enoch must have struggled for a long time among this great number of relatives. We think about caring for our own parents, but they must have thought about their families seven generations before them. What kind of interactions must have taken place there?
I mentioned that Jared, Enoch’s father, became the father of Enoch at the age of 162 and lived to be 962 years old. Enoch became the father of Methuselah at the age of 65 and lived 300 years after that, so Enoch lived 365 years.
Genesis tells us that Enoch went to be with God without seeing death, but we can only imagine what this was really like. What is certain is that Jared, Enoch’s father, lost his son Enoch before he died.
After losing his son Enoch, the father Jared lived another 435 years. Jared knew the sorrow of losing a child before a parent. This parental grief was and probably still is the same today. Let us first keep in mind that Enoch grew up and lived his life in these “circumstances”.
Let us look at the second thing. It is “the environment in which Enoch lived”. According to the genealogy in Genesis 5, Enoch became the father of Methuselah, who became the father of Lemech, who became the father of Noah.
Yes, Noah, the builder of Noah’s ark. Noah was born 69 years after Enoch was transferred to heaven. We can imagine from this, that while Enoch lived he saw almost the same scene as Noah lived. Then, what was the era in which Noah lived? The Bible describes it in Genesis 6.
5 The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. 6 The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. 7 So the Lord said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.”
And then, after verse 11, it goes on to say.
11 Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence. 12 God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways. 13 So God said to Noah, “I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth.”
Immediately after this, God commands Noah to build an ark. This means that the time in which Enoch lived was also a time when people’s thoughts were always evil, when they were corrupt before God, and violence filled the earth. It could be said that people at that time had been doing evil things for 500 or 600 years of their life. Perhaps God saw the state of mankind and decided that these people no longer needed longevity, so He changed the earth’s environment with the Flood and greatly reduced the human lifespan.
In a sense, it was a time of lawlessness, because God’s law had not yet been given to man. That is to say, it was a time when one had to protect one’s own life, one could not walk outside unprotected, and violence of all kinds was probably going on day and night.
It was also a time when there was no stipulation of punishment if someone did something wicked, and evil could be done as much as they pleased. It was truly a time of such darkness that one could not provide for one’s family without being equally tainted with evil and doing evil. Enoch lived in the midst of such an “environment”.
Let us look at the last thing. It is “faith that overcomes circumstances and environment.” Genesis 5:22, 23 says something curious about Enoch.
22 After he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked faithfully with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters. 23 Altogether, Enoch lived a total of 365 years. 24 Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.
After this, verse 24 adds a more brief explanation of this.
5 By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: “He could not be found, because God had taken him away.” For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God.
We have discussed Enoch’s upbringing and environment. In the midst of a human world that God saw irredeemable wickedness and even said that He would destroy, Enoch walked with God and was commended as one who pleased God.
There are things here that we will miss if we don’t read carefully. Genesis tells us that “After he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked faithfully with God 300 years” (5:22).
In other words, he became the father of Methuselah at the age of 65, which means that for the previous 65 years he had lived no differently from an ordinary person. But after Methuselah was born, he walked with God and lived a life pleasing to God.
We do not know what happened when he was 65 years old. Sixty-five years is a long time in terms of human life today. I have not even reached that age yet. For such a long time, he seems to have lived as a godless person.
He may have been living in his own way with evil, just as his surroundings were. But from the time he became the father to his first child, Methuselah, he began to walk with God. What we do know is that it prompted him to make some kind of decision.
A Japanese couple in San Diego once had their first child. The father was a scientist with a PhD degree. He testified that the birth of his child was a great catalyst for his faith.
He is a brilliant scientist, but when he learned that his child was conceived in his wife’s womb, he believed in God. Perhaps Enoch, too, believed in God who was mightier than him, when he held his child in his arms for the first time, and from that moment on began to walk with God in his life.
Perhaps there was a repentance and a turning of the heart that he did not want his own evil to be burned into the eyes of the child. With no one to rely on but himself, and seeing his own child sleeping, he may have decided that he should change his way of life.
He was not a “man walking with God” until he was 65 years old…. Dear people in the Lord, no one is born “walking with God”. There was no desire in his heart to please God until he was 65 years old. Dear people in the Lord, there is no one “who pleases God” by nature.
But from that time on, he made the decision to change his way of life, and he lived the rest of his life with God. From that moment on, he began to live a life that pleased God. This new way of life of Enoch speaks to us all.
The title of today’s message is “Enoch: How to Live from Age 65.” What age is 65 for us today? It may be around retirement. It is an age when we have experienced the joys and sorrows of life in our own way.
We know the ins and outs of human nature, we know the harshness of the world, we have sent off our children, we have taken care of our parents, and we have a glimpse of our own final days in our minds. You may be thinking about how to close out your life.
It was at such a time that Enoch made up his mind. From now on I will walk with God and live to please Him.
Dear people in the Lord, this message is not intended for those who are 65 years old, or even older. It does not matter if it is 65 or 28 years old.
What I want to share with you today is that we can change our way of life at any time. That means that we all can start our lives over. There is no slow or fast way to do this. God is giving us the opportunity to do this in our lives. He is always speaking to us.
Maybe it is when a child is born, just like Enoch. It may be when we fail to enroll in the school we had hoped for. It may be when we fail in business. Maybe it is when you are attending someone’s funeral.
Whatever it is, God speaks to us “at that moment”. God speaks to us at that moment, “Turn to me”. God is giving us a chance. Blessed are those who do not miss this chance.
At that time, we believe in God. And that faith goes beyond our “circumstances” and “environment”. My upbringing was not good, and the environment in which I lived was like this, so it’s hopeless. Certainly, if we were to do everything on our own, we would not be able to do any more.
However, I am now talking about God who intervenes in our lives, who creates something out of nothing. It does not mean that because it was hopeless until now, it will be hopeless going forward. Someone like me cannot change. Faith has the power to transcend such resignation.
I was not able to go, but there was an evangelistic gathering last week at Angels Stadium called Harvest Crusade. The speaker at that gathering was Greg Lorie, lead pastor of Harvest Christian Fellowship. Last July, Pastor Greg’s church baptized 4,500 people on a beach in Southern California. God is using Pastor Greg.
What kind of life has he lived? There have been many things in his life. His parents divorced when he was very young. After the first divorce, his mother remarried, and she went through a series of divorces. Pastor Greg has five stepfathers. When he was nine years old, his mother had already been divorced several times, and his step-father at that time was very kind to him and provided him with the stability he had been waiting for so long.
But one fall day, while he was playing outside, a limousine stopped in front of his house. And his belongings were taken out of the house into the limousine. He asked his mother, “Where are we going?” She said “Hawaii”. He asked his mother timidly, “Where is dad?” She responded, “Dad is not coming with us”.
During the long flight to Hawaii, he thought of the faces of those who had been his father, one after another. When he arrived at the Honolulu airport, his next father was waiting for him and he began his life in Hawaii. As it turns out, this life in Hawaii was eventually ruined by this man’s violence against his mother.
Then his mother and he returned to Southern California. Eventually, he grows up and lives a life of desperation due to his rebellion against his previous lifestyle. He started to get involved in all kinds of drugs, and his life became rough.
He wanted to get out of such a place, he was fed up with that kind of life, but he couldn’t get out of it. He lived his life in such a way that he may lose his life if he continued living that way. However, he went through many places, and meets Jesus Christ.
You say he met Jesus Christ, but isn’t He a person from 2000 years ago? You may ask, how does he meet Him? You are absolutely right.
By believing in the cross of Christ, which happened 2000 years ago, Greg made the decision to make Jesus Christ the Lord of his life. Indeed, Pastor Greg Laurie overcame his circumstances and environment by faith. He walked his life with God, and God was pleased with his walk.
To all of you around 65 years old, as well as those who are in your teens, there are not many things in our lives that we really need to focus on. No, it comes down to these two things. Walking through life with God and living to please Him.
For Enoch, who lived in this way, God raised him up to heaven without him seeing death. This is an extremely rare case among human beings. But God was so pleased with Enoch’s way of life. If we live with these two things in mind, what will happen to our lives?
I do not what kind of life each of you have lived, but I do know that there were many things that were irresistible when it came to the circumstances in which we grew up. The events of Greg’s early childhood were not something he had any control over. It was extremely difficult for him to trust people and live uprightly after those days. But then he met Jesus Christ. No person can do it, but the Lord Jesus can change our lives.
Let us keep in mind that at the age of 65, Enoch began his walk with God, became pleasing to God, and was carried up to heaven! Know that our faith is what makes us overcome our circumstances and environment!
If there is a God in this world, what better way is there for us human beings to live our lives other than these two? To live life with God and to live each day pleasing to God. It is a very simple way of life.
A life where we walk according to our own desires, a life where we struggle to please ourselves. Sounds good, but why do the wheels of that life go haywire to such an extent? We should know what we have seen and heard along such a road. We should know the problems that await us on this road.
Why do we spend our days trying to please only ourselves? We should know the emptiness that lies ahead. Like Enoch, like Pastor Greg, we can start a new life from such a day and time.
Let us make a decision about this today. If that decision was made a long time ago and has already become covered with dust, let us dust it off and make that decision once again. Let us make it a decision not only for ourselves but also for our families.
God will work with you and guide your life. God is always ready for your new life. Let us break the chains of Adam’s curse, where we are, and pass along the chains of Christ to the next generation. For that purpose, what God is expectantly waiting for is our decision.
