『だから、わたしはキリストのためならば、弱さと、侮辱と、危機と、迫害と、行き詰まりとに甘んじよう。なぜなら、わたしが弱い時にこそ、わたしは強いからである』（２コリント１２章１０節）
ミデアン人の前に立った時、ギデオンは自分の弱さと侮辱と危機と迫害と行き詰まりに向き合ったことでしょう。しかし、彼が弱い時に、彼の神は強かったのです。言い方を変えれば、彼が自らを強いと思っていたのなら、彼は本当に弱かったということです。
「私はいつも強くなくてはならない」という呪縛を人生の目標に掲げて、かけがえのない人生の時間を、そのために費やすことがないように！「もっと、もっと」という底無しの沼に陥り、人生を後悔することがありませんように！このことに執着するあまり、時に私達は愛する伴侶や家族を失うことがあるということを肝に銘じましょう。
「わたしが弱い時にこそ、わたしは強いのだ」という経験を神様がこれからの私達の人生において見せてくださいますように！私達はこの生き方の上に自らの人生を築くようにと神に求められているのです。

ギデオン：数と力からの解放

今日はギデオンという人を見ていきたく願っております。ギデオンについては聖書の士師記がその生涯を記録しています。その彼が登場します士師記６章１節はこのような言葉で始まっています。
士師記６章１節「イスラエルの人々は、主の目に悪とされることを行った。主は彼らを七年間、ミディアン人の手に渡された」
聖書の中にはこれ以外にも「主の目に悪とされることが行われた」という言葉が多く出てきます。ここに記されている主の目に悪であったこととはいったい何なのでしょうか。
士師記を読むと、それはイスラエルがバアルという偶像の神に仕えていたことであったことが分かります（写真１）。彼らはこの写真にあるようなバアルの神を自らの手で作り、それを拝んだのです。そして、それが主の目にはなはだしい悪とされたのです。
バアルの神とは豊穣の神です。すなわち多産と豊作の神です。イスラエルの民はもともと、遊牧民族でした。彼らは土地をもたずに荒野を転々として生きていました。しかし、そんな彼らはカナンという約束の地に定住し始め、農耕を始めます。そうしますと彼らの関心は豊作と繁栄になり、その願いを叶えてくれる神々に自ずと、その心は惹かれていったのです。
彼らが不安定な移住を続けている時にはなかった問題が、彼らの生活が安定した時に、明らかになってきたのです。その彼らの心にあったことは「もっと多く！」、「もっと豊かに！」ということでした。１００束の麦では飽き足らず、彼らは１０００束を求め、それは際限のないものとなっていきました。
イスラエルの民は、エジプトの奴隷の身分から、神様が救い出してくださったことを忘れ、豊かさ、多さ、強さ、大きさというものに心が惹かれていったのです。主にある皆さん、この事は示唆に富んでいます。
１００束の麦に飽き足らず、それを１０００束にすることに心が奪われ、それを叶えることをアピールする神々を求める。私達は自分の願いを叶える、自分にとって都合のいい神を求めているのでしょうか？このことは私達が胸に手を置いて、自らに問うべき問いかけではないでしょうか。
このような状態に陥っていったイスラエルに神様は何をしたのでしょうか。神様はイスラエルを弱くし、彼らを貧しくしました。神様は彼らを危機的な状況に置いたのです。その具体的なこととして、イスラエルの民を異教徒、「ミディアン人の手に渡された」と聖書は記しています。
私たちが信じる神は天地万物を支配されるお方です。時にその神は異教徒をも用いて、私達に気づきを与えようとされます。このミディアン人はアマレク人と大挙して、イスラエルに襲いかかります。その彼らの様を聖書はこう記しています。
士師記６章３節-５節「イスラエル人が種をまいた時には、いつもミデアン人、アマレク人および東方の民が上ってきてイスラエル人を襲い、イスラエル人に向かって陣を取り、地の産物を荒してガザの付近にまでおよび、イスラエルのうちに命をつなぐべき物を残さず、羊も牛もロバも残さなかった。彼らが家畜と天幕を携えて、いなごのように多くのぼってきたからである。すなわち彼らとそのラクダは無数であって、彼らは国を荒すためにに入ってきたのであった」。
このようにおびただしい数の敵の脅威に取り囲まれたイスラエルについて、今、読みました士師記６章の続きにはこのように書かれています。
士師記６章６節「こうしてイスラエルはミデアン人のために非常に衰え、イスラエルの人々は主に呼ばわった」。
ここに神様が願っておられたことがあります。彼らはミディアン人によって悩まされることにより、主に目を向け始めたのです。
牧師になり２９年が経ちましたが、私が見てきた限り、その間、何もかもうまくいっている人が神を求めることは、ほとんどありませんでした。しかし、何かしら、自分ではどうすることもできないことに向き合う時に、人は「自分の何か」を見るのではなく、天を見上げます。
そして、その時に神様は私達に何かを気がつかせようとされます。そのことを通して与えられる気づきは、私達が困難を通して失ったものよりもはるかに大切なことだと私は信じています。「神に出会う。神を知る」ということ以上の恩恵は、私達の人生にはないからです。
神様はイスラエルに神を思い起こさせ、そこに立ち返えさせるために、異教徒ミディアン人を彼らのもとに送ったのです。イスラエルの民は、このことのために七年もの間、自分達の弱さ、貧しさというものを心に刻むことになったのです。
そして、その彼らに対して神様は彼らをその苦境に置き去りにはなさらずに、彼らの叫びに答え、一人のリーダーを選ばれました。そのリーダーの名前を私達はギデオンと呼びます。
大挙して襲いかかってくるミディアン人から民を守るべく選ばれたリーダーですから、さぞかし勇ましい人を神様は選ばれたのだろうと私達は思います。しかし、このギデオンはイスラエル民族が危急存亡の中にあった時、何をしていたかご存知でしょうか。士師記６章１１節にはこう書かれています。
士師記６章１１節「さて、主の御使いが来て、オフラにあるテレビンの木の下に座った。これはアビエゼルの人ヨアシュのものであった。その子ギデオンは、ミディアン人に奪われるのを免れるため、酒ぶねの中で小麦を打っていた」
この時の情景が想像できます。酒ぶねに隠れるようにして背を丸め、ミディアン人を恐れ、ビクビクと辺りを見回しながら小麦を打っている彼の姿を。この男に対して神様は御使いを用いて「大勇士よ！主はあなたと共におられます」と呼びかけたのです（士師記６章１２節）。そして彼に言われたのです。
士師記６章１４節「あなたはこのあなたの力をもって行って、ミデアン人の手からイスラエルを救いだしなさい。わたしがあなたをつかわすのではありませんか」。
しかし、ギデオンはその言葉に対してこういいました。
士師記６章１５節「ああ主よ、わたしはどうしてイスラエルを救うことができましょうか。わたしの氏族はマナセのうちで最も弱いものです。わたしはまたわたしの父の家族のうちで最も小さいものです」。
彼は自分の一族はマナセという部族の中で最も貧弱であり、その家族の中でも彼は最も取るに足らない者なのだというのです。御使いがそんなギデオンを「大勇士」と呼んだのは、彼が強いからでも勇敢であるからでもありません。大事なのは、その呼びかけの後の一言、「主はあなたと共におられます」なのです（士師記６章１２節）。
ギデオンは明らかに勇士ではありません。主が共におられるゆえに、彼は大勇士と呼ばれたのです。主にある皆さん、「神が共におられる」ということ以上の特権は、私達の人生にはないのです。１４節にありますように主は「わたしがあなたを遣わすのではないか」と語りかけていてくださるのです（士師記６章１４節）。
このような会話は、ギデオンに限ったことではありませんでした。かつて神様はあのモーセに語りかけました。
出エジプト記３章９節—１０節「わたしはエジプトにいる私の民の悩みを、つぶさに見、また追い使う者のゆえに彼らの叫ぶのを聞いた。わたしは彼らの苦しみを知っている・・・。・・・さあ、わたしは、あなたをパロにつかわして、わたしの民、イスラエルの人々をエジプトから導きださせよう」。
それに対してモーセはこたえました。
出エジプト記３章９節、１１節「わたしはいったい何者でしょう。わたしがパロのところへ行って、イスラエルの人々をエジプトから導き出すのでしょうか」。
神様はモーセに言われました。
「わたしはかならずあなたと共にいる」（出エジプト記３章１２節）。
しかし、まだモーセは神様に弱音をはきます。
出エジプト４章１０節「ああ主よ、わたしは以前にも、またあなたが僕に語られてから後も、言葉の人ではありません。わたしは口も重く、舌も重いのです」。
主は彼に言われました。
出エジプト４章１１節‐１２節「誰が人に口を授けたのか。話せず、聞こえず、また、見え、見えなくする者は誰か。主なるわたしではないか。それゆえ行きなさい。わたしはあなたの口と共にあって、あなたの言うべきことを教えるであろう」。
このことはギデオン、モーセに限ったことではありません。かつてエレミヤに主は臨み、言いました。
エレミヤ１章５節「わたしはあなたをまだ母の胎につくらない先に、あなたを知り、あなたがまだ生まれないさきに、あなたを聖別し、あなたを立てて万国の預言者とした」。
それに対してエレミヤは言ったのです。
エレミヤ１章６節「ああ、主なる神よ、わたしはただ若者にすぎず、どのように語ってよいか知りません」。
それに対して神様は言われるのです。
エレミヤ１章７節—８節「あなたはただ若者にすぎないと言ってはならない。誰にでも、すべてわたしがつかわす人へ行き、あなたに命じることをみな語らなければならない。彼らを恐れてはならない、わたしがあなたと共にいて、あなたを救うからである」。
先にお話ししました。イスラエルは定住することにより、もっと多く、もっと豊かに、もっと強くということに執着するようになりました。そして、そのことを叶えてくれる神々を自ら作り、それを拝んだのです。
彼らの脳裏にある、この彼らの願いを叶えることができるリーダー像は彼らを豊かにする力があり、強さを兼ね備えた、自信に満ちたリーダーでしょう。しかし神様はその彼らの願いを挫（くじ）くかのようにして、あえて最も弱く、力のない者を選んだのです。
今、お話ししたギデオン、モーセ、エレミヤは自分の力量を超えた使命を神様から与えられた人達です。そして、彼らはその語りかけに対してエクスキューズしました。はたして神様にとって、その彼らの返答は驚きであったでしょうか。
いいえ、神様は彼らがその使命にあたる力量がないことを十分に承知していました。それを承知で、彼らに神様は同じことを言われ、励ましているのです。それが「わたしがあなたと共にいる」という約束なのです。
もともと力量のある者が結果を残す時に人々は彼らの功績を褒め称えるでしょう。そして、彼らもそれは自分の力によったのだと思うようになるでしょう。ですから、神様の人選はいつもこうなのです。
旧約聖書、新約聖書を問わずに、聖書で思いつく人達を思い浮かべてください。その多くがこのような私達の意表をつく神の選びによって選ばれ、神様が彼らと共にいるゆえに彼らは驚くべきはたらきを成していくのです。
ギデオンは弱気でした。しかし、主が共にいるということを心に刻んで立ち上がりました。彼の前にはミデアン人、アマレク人が結束して、立ちはだかりました。
士師記８章１０節は、その総数たるや１３５０００人だったと記しています。その敵を前にギデオンは北から南から色々な部族をかき集め、どうにか３２０００人の兵力を集めました。
しかし、その数は相手の四分の一にもなりません。到底、太刀打ちできるような数ではありません。ギデオンの心臓の音は、恐れゆえに激しく鼓動していたに違いありません。そのような時に、耳を疑うような言葉が神様から彼に語られます。
士師記７章２節—３節「主はギデオンに言われた。『あなたと共にいる民はあまりにも多い。ゆえにわたしは彼らの手にミデアン人をわたさない。おそらくイスラエルはわたしに向かってみずから誇り、「わたしは自身の手で自分を救ったのだ」と言うであろう。それゆえ、民の耳に触れ示して「誰でも恐れおののく者は帰れ」と言いなさい。こうしてギデオンは彼らを試みたので、民のうちに帰った者は２２０００人あり、残った者は１００００人であった。
ギデオンが必死で集めた人達を神様はその三分の一以下の１００００人に減らしました。しかし、それだけではないのです。さらに主は驚くべきことを言われました。
士師記７章４節「民はまだ多い。彼らを導いて水ぎわに下りなさい。わたしはそこで、あなたのために彼らを試みよう」
神様はそこで何を試みたのでしょうか。
士師記７章５節−７節5 そこでギデオンが民を導いて水ぎわに下ると、主は彼に言われた、「すべて犬のなめるように舌をもって水をなめる者はそれを別にしておきなさい。またすべてひざを折り、かがんで水を飲む者もそうしなさい」。6 そして手を口にあてて水をなめた者の数は三百人であった。残りの民はみなひざを折り、かがんで水を飲んだ。7 主はギデオンに言われた、「わたしは水をなめた三百人の者をもって、あなたがたを救い、ミデアンびとをあなたの手にわたそう。残りの民はおのおのその家に帰らせなさい」。
神様は周りに注意を払いながら、手で水をすくって飲んだ者をそこに残しました。しかし、膝をついて無防備に顔を水につけて飲んだ者は家に帰らせるようにギデオンに命じたのです。
２０１１年、私はサバティカルを利用してイスラエルを旅していました。その時にこの事が起きた泉に立ち寄りました。
そこには、この泉はギデオンが兵士を３００人までに減らした泉だという看板がありました。もうお分かりでしょう、私がどんなポーズをして写真を撮ったかを！
誰もいないその泉で、ギデオンはここで何を考えていたのかとしばし一人、思い巡らしたことを今でも覚えています。
３００人はギデオンが最初に集めた兵士の数の１００分の一以下です。３００人で１３５０００人と戦うのですから、比率としては１人で４５０人を相手にすることになります。ギデオンは神様が自分の計画を滅茶苦茶にしてしまったと思ったかもしれません。「なんでこんなことをするのですか」と誰もが思うでしょう。
これらの常識を超えた出来事の理由はただ一つ。「もし、あなたががんばって人をかき集めて、武具を備えて、民の士気を挙げて、この戦いに勝利するのなら、あなたの心は驕り、自分の手でこの戦を勝ちとったと思うだろう」。
そして、結局のところ、あなたもイスラエルも、かつて彼らの心が引き寄せられた「力」や「数」に対する崇拝へと後戻りするだろう。すなわち、やっぱり最後にモノを言うのは数だ、富だ、力だ。それによって我々は勝ちを得たのだと彼らは思うだろう。それこそがバアルの神々を拝もうとするあなたたちの心にあるものなのだ。あなたは繁栄の神しか求めなくなるのだ。そして、その繁栄の神は決してあなたの心に平安を与えることはない。主にある皆さん、こよなく私達を愛しておられる私達の神は、私達が徒労に終わることが分かっていることを私達に願わないのです。
さて、この結末はどうなったのでしょうか。かの三百人はどうなったのでしょうか。士師記は彼らの前にいる敵は海辺の砂のように多くで数えきれなかったと記録しています。その敵を前に、かの３００人は三組に分けられ、手にラッパと松明（たいまつ）が入れられた空の壺をたずさえました。そして、雄叫びをあげ、ラッパを吹き、壺を打ち砕きました。そうしましたら敵は混乱し、同士討ちしながら、大声をあげて敗走したというのです。イスラエルはその彼らを追撃し、ことごとく彼らを打ち負かしたのです。I
主にある皆さん、今日、見てきましたことから私達は何を学ぶのでしょうか。事の始まりはイスラエルが豊穣の神、バアルを拝み始めたことでした。彼らの生活が安定しました時、彼らは数と量と力へ隷属するようになり、神様を忘れました。神様は彼らの生活の中に介入し、私たちが今一度、神様に目を向けるように導かれたのです。
主にある皆さん、このことを私達にも気がつかせるために、時に神様は私達に現代のミデアン人を送ることがあることを心に留めましょう。そのことにより、神様は私達の力をそぎ落とします。私達の願望が根こそぎ折られることがあるのです。
神様がこのことをイスラエルに示すために成した徹底ぶりに私達は驚きます。神様は弱気で自分には力量がないことを知るギデオンをあえて選んだのです。そして、イスラエルの軍隊は徹底的に減らされたのです。今日、私達は遊牧民ではありません。しかし、へブル１１章１３節、１４節にはこう記されています。
へブル１１章１３節—１４節 13 これらの人はみな、信仰をいだいて死んだ。まだ約束のものは受けていなかったが、はるかにそれを望み見て喜び、そして、地上では旅人であり寄留者であることを、自ら言いあらわした。14 そう言いあらわすことによって、彼らがふるさとを求めていることを示している。
確かに私達は今、一つところに定住しています。しかし、そうでありながら、この地上で私達は旅人なのだ、寄留者なのだという心構えをもって生きることにより、私達は様々な問題から守られることでしょう。
多くを得、豊かになる、それらを神様に喜ばれることのために用いることは悪いことではありません。しかし、そのような願望だけが私達の心を占め、それらが私達の崇拝の対象となるのなら、私達は決して幸いな人生を生きることができません。
私達の神はギデオンの神であることを心に刻みましょう。このことにおいて、同じページに立とうではありませんか。もしかしたら今、私はミデアン人と格闘していますという方がいるかもしれません。自分の力が全くそぎ落とされてしまいましたという方がいるかもしれません。
どうぞお忘れなく。神様はまず、私達の土台を堅固なものにするところから、事を始めるのです。あなたに力があるかどうか、そんなことは全知全能なるお方の前では無意味なことです。肝心なことはこの神が私達の側にいるのか否かなのです。
この度のロサンゼルスの火事の被害に心を痛めます。あの被災者の方達に起きたことは、いつでも私達の身にも降りかかることです。火事でなくとも、私達は一瞬にして全てを失ってしまう可能性の中に生きています。突然の病気の告知。突然の事故、突然の解雇・・・。これらが何もない時に、私達は勘違いを起こし、自分の力に過信してしまうのが私達なのです。イエス・キリストがかつて言われたことを心に刻みましょう。
ヨハネ１５章４節—５節4 わたしにつながっていなさい。そうすれば、わたしはあなたがたとつながっていよう。枝がぶどうの木につながっていなければ、自分だけでは実を結ぶことができないように、あなたがたもわたしにつながっていなければ実を結ぶことができない。5 わたしはぶどうの木、あなたがたはその枝である。もし人がわたしにつながっており、またわたしがその人とつながっておれば、その人は実を豊かに結ぶようになる。わたしから離れては、あなたがたは何一つできないからである。
「わたしから離れては、あなたがたは何一つできないからである」この言葉は私達の心にズシンと響きます。私達は弱いということを、私達は知っているでしょうか。
手のひらに刺さった小さな棘によって、私達は物事に集中できなくなります。誰かの一言が私達から睡眠を奪います。自分が成した約束を守り通すことができないような者です。起きていない心配事によって私達の心身は蝕まれていきます。
パウロはその自分の弱さを経験することにより、神の恵みの強さを明らかにし、２コリント１２章９節−１０節にこう書き残しました。
２コリント１２章９節−１０節9 ところが、主が言われた、「わたしの恵みはあなたに対して十分である。わたしの力は弱いところに完全にあらわれる」。それだから、キリストの力がわたしに宿るように、むしろ、喜んで自分の弱さを誇ろう。10 だから、わたしはキリストのためならば、弱さと、侮辱と、危機と、迫害と、行き詰まりとに甘んじよう。なぜなら、わたしが弱い時にこそ、わたしは強いからである。

Gideon: Set Free from Numbers and Power

Today we would like to take a look at a man named Gideon. Regarding Gideon, the Book of Judges in the Bible records his life. The sixth chapter of Judges, in which he appears, begins with these words.
Judges 6:1 The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord, and for seven years He gave them into the hands of the Midianites.
Besides here, the words “did evil in the eyes of the Lord” comes out many times in the Bible. What exactly was evil in the eyes of the Lord that is mentioned here?
When you read Judges, you come to understand that it was Israel serving an idol god called Baal.
They made the god Baal like the one in the picture with their own hands, and worshipped it. And that was a terrible evil in the eyes of the Lord.
The god Baal is the god of fertility. In other words, it is the god of many offsprings and good harvest. The Israelites were originally a nomadic people. They had no land and lived from place to place in the wilderness. But then they began to settle in the Promised land of Canaan and started farming. Their concern then became harvesting and prosperity, and their hearts were naturally drawn to the gods who would fulfill their wishes.
Problems that were not present when they continued their precarious migration became apparent when their lives became more stable. What was in their hearts was “More!”, “More abundance!” Not satisfied with a 100 sheaves of wheat, they sought a 1000 sheaves, and endless more.
The Israelites forgot that God had delivered them from slavery in Egypt, and their hearts were drawn to abundance, plenty, strength, and size. People in the Lord, this is highly suggestive.
Not satisfied with a 100 sheaves of wheat, and being controlled by the desire to make that a 1000, they sought gods who would fulfill their appeals. Are we looking for a god who grants our wishes and is convenient for us? This is a question we should ask ourselves with our hands upon our hearts.
What did God do to Israel as it fell into this state? God made Israel weak and made them poor. God put them in a critical situation. As a specific example of this, the Bible states “He gave them (the Israelites) into the hands of the Midianites (pagans)”.
The God we believe in is the One who rules over heaven and earth and all things. Sometimes that God uses pagans to bring awareness to us. These Midianites, in large numbers with the Amalekites, attack Israel. The Bible describes it in the following manner.
Judges 6:3-5 3 Whenever the Israelites planted their crops, the Midianites, Amalekites and other eastern peoples invaded the country. 4 They camped on the land and ruined the crops all the way to Gaza and did not spare a living thing for Israel, neither sheep nor cattle nor donkeys. 5 They came up with their livestock and their tents like swarms of locusts. It was impossible to count them or their camels; they invaded the land to ravage it.
Continuing on with what we just read in Judges 6, this is what it says about Israel being surrounded by the threat of such a great number of enemies.
Judges 6:6 Midian so impoverished the Israelites that they cried out to the Lord for help.
Here is what God desired. They began to look to the Lord because of being afflicted by the Midianites.
I have been a pastor for 29 years now, and as far as I have seen during that time, very few people who have everything going well for them have sought God. However, when faced with something that one cannot control, one does not look at “what is their own,” but looks up to the heavens.
And then God tries to make us realize something. I believe that the awareness given through that is far more important than what we have lost through our difficulties. For there is no greater benefit in our lives than to “Meet God. Know God.”
God sent the pagan Midianites to Israel to remind them of God and to turn them back to Him. For seven years the Israelites were to remember their weakness and poverty because of this.
And God did not leave them in their predicament, but answered their cry and chose a leader for them. The name of that leader we call Gideon.
Since the leader was chosen to protect the people from the large number of Midianites who attacked them, we think that God must have chosen a very brave man. But do you know what this Gideon was doing when the Israelites were in dire straits? This is what is written in Judges 6:11.
Judges 6:11 The angel of the Lord came and sat down under the oak in Ophrah that belonged to Joash the Abiezrite, where his son Gideon was threshing wheat in a winepress to keep it from the Midianites.
We can imagine the scene at the time. He is hiding in a winepress, hunched over, afraid of the Midianites, and looking around with trepidation, as he threshes the wheat.この男God used His angel to call out to this man, “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior.” (Judges 6:12) And said to him:
Judges 6:14 “Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian’s hand. Am I not sending you?”
But Gideon responded to those words by saying:
Judges 6:15 “Pardon me, my lord, but how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family.”
He says that his family is the weakest of the tribe of Manasseh and that he is the least important in his family. The angel called such a Gideon a “mighty warrior,” not because he is strong or brave. What is important, are the words before that: “The Lord is with you”.
Gideon is clearly not a warrior. Because the Lord was with him, he was called a great warrior. People in the Lord, there is no greater privilege in our lives than to have “God with us”. As we see in verse 14, the Lord says, “Am I not sending you?” (Judges 6:14)
These conversations were not limited to Gideon. God once spoke to Moses.
Exodus 3:9-109 And now the cry of the Israelites has reached me, and I have seen the way the Egyptians are oppressing them. 10 So now, go. I am sending you to Pharaoh to bring my people the Israelites out of Egypt.”
In response to this Moses answered:
Exodus 3:11 “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?”
God said to Moses.
“I will be with you.” (Exodus 3:12)
But still Moses shared his concerns to God.
Exodus 4:10 “Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.”
The Lord said to him.
Exodus 4:11-1211 “Who gave human beings their mouths? Who makes them deaf or mute? Who gives them sight or makes them blind? Is it not I, the Lord? 12 Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.”
This is not limited to Gideon and Moses. Once the Lord came to Jeremiah and said:
Jeremiah 1:5 “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”
To this, Jeremiah said:
Jeremiah 1:6 “Alas, Sovereign Lord, I do not know how to speak; I am too young.”
In response, God says:
Jeremiah 1:7-87 “Do not say, ‘I am too young.’ You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. 8 Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,” declares the Lord.
I said earlier, that by settling down, Israel became obsessed with having more and becoming richer and stronger. And they made their own gods that would fulfill that, and worshipped them.
In their minds, the image of a leader who can fulfill this wish of theirs would be a confident leader who has the power and strength to enrich them. However, God dared to choose the weakest and the least powerful, as if to frustrate their wishes.
Gideon, Moses, and Jeremiah, whom I just mentioned, were people given a mission by God that was beyond their ability. And they gave excuses in response to God’s calling. Were their responses really a surprise to God?
No, God was well aware that they did not have the competency to undertake the mission. Knowing that, God says the same thing to them and encourages them. That is the promise, “I am with you.”
When those who are naturally competent achieve results, people will praise them for their achievements. And they too will come to believe that it was in their own power that they did so. Therefore, God’s selection of people is always like this.
Think of people that come to mind in the Bible, whether Old Testament or New Testament. Many of them have been chosen by God in such a surprising way, and because God is with them, they do amazing things.
Gideon was weak. However, he answered the call with the knowledge in his heart that the Lord was with him. The Midianites and Amalekites united before him and stood in his way.
Judges 8:10 states that the total number of them was a hundred and thirty-five thousand. In the face of this enemy, Gideon gathered various tribes from the north and south and somehow managed to assemble a force of thirty-two thousand men.
However, that number is not even a quarter of their enemy. t is not a number that can ever compete. Gideon’s heart must have been beating wildly out of fear. At such a time, God speaks to him words that he might have doubted what he was hearing.
Judges 7:2-32 The Lord said to Gideon, “You have too many men. I cannot deliver Midian into their hands, or Israel would boast against Me, ‘My own strength has saved me.’ 3 Now announce to the army, ‘Anyone who trembles with fear may turn back and leave Mount Gilead.’” So twenty-two thousand men left, while ten thousand remained.
God reduced the number of people Gideon desperately gathered to less than a third of that number, that is ten thousand. But that is not all. Furthermore, the Lord said something remarkable.
Judges 7:4 “There are still too many men. Take them down to the water, and I will thin them out for you there.”
What did God try to do there?
Judges 7:5-7 5 So Gideon took the men down to the water. There the Lord told him, “Separate those who lap the water with their tongues as a dog laps from those who kneel down to drink.” 6 Three hundred of them drank from cupped hands, lapping like dogs. All the rest got down on their knees to drink. 7 The Lord said to Gideon, “With the three hundred men that lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hands. Let all the others go home.”
God left there those who drank water sipping it with their hands, paying attention to their surroundings. However, he ordered Gideon to send home anyone who knelt down and drank unprotected with his face in the water.
In 2011, I was traveling in Israel during my sabbatical. During that time, I stopped by the spring where this took place.There was a sign there saying that this was the spring where Gideon had reduced his soldiers to 300. By now you have probably figured out what pose I took for the photo! I still remember being alone by the spring, contemplating what Gideon was thinking.
Three hundred men is less than one-hundredth of the number of soldiers Gideon initially assembled. Three hundred men are to fight one hundred and thirty-five thousand men, so as a ratio, each man has to fight 450 men. Gideon might have thought that God had messed up his plan. Everyone would think, “Why are you doing this?”
There is only one reason for these out-of-the-ordinary events. “If you work hard to gather men, equip them with armor, and raise the morale of your people to win this battle, then your heart will be conceited and you will think that you have won this war with your own hands.”
And in the end, both you and Israel will fall back on the worship of “power” and “numbers” to which their hearts were once drawn. In other words, they will think it is numbers, wealth, and power that count at the end of the day, and that by these things we have gained victory. That is what is in the hearts of those of you who seek to worship the gods of Baal. You will seek only the god of prosperity. And that god of prosperity will never give you peace of mind. People in the Lord, our God, who loves us so much, does not wish for us what we know will end in futility.
Now, how did this end? What happened to the three hundred men? The Book of Judges records that the enemies before them could no more be counted than the sand on the seashore.
Before their enemies, the three hundred men were divided into three companies, and in their hands were placed trumpets and empty jars with torches inside. Then with a roar, they blew their trumpets, and smashed their jars. The enemy was then confused, fought amongst themselves, and ran away shouting loudly. Israel pursued them and completely defeated them.
People in the Lord, what do we learn from what we have seen today? It all started when Israel began to worship Baal, the god of fertility. When their lives became stable, they became enslaved to numbers, quantity, and power, and forgot God. God intervened in their lives and led them to look to Him once again.
People in the Lord, let us keep in mind, that sometimes God sends us modern-day Midianites to remind us of this as well. By doing so, God shrugs off our power. Our desires can be uprooted and broken.
We are amazed at the thoroughness in which God has done these things to show this to Israel. God dared to choose Gideon, who was weak and knew he was not capable. And Israel’s army was drastically reduced.
Today, we are not nomads. However, in Hebrews 11:13, 14 it is says:
Hebrews 11:13-14 13 All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance, admitting that they were foreigners and strangers on earth. 14 People who say such things show that they are looking for a country of their own.
Indeed, we are now settled in one place. But even so, by living with the mindset that we are foreigners and strangers on this earth, we will be protected from many problems.
There is nothing wrong with gaining much, becoming rich, and using them for what is pleasing to God. However, if only such desires occupy our minds and they become the object of our worship, we will never live a blessed life.
Let us keep in mind that our God is the God of Gideon. Let us be on the same page in this regard. Perhaps some of you may say that I am struggling with the Midianites right now. There may be those of you who may say that their power has been totally shorn away.
Please do not forget. God begins by making our foundation solid. Whether you have power or not, such things are meaningless before the Almighty One. The crucial question is whether this God is on our side or not.
I am heartbroken by the damage caused by the recent fires in Los Angeles. What happened to those victims can happen to us at any time. Even if it is not a fire, we live in the possibility of losing everything in an instant. Sudden announcement of an illness. Sudden accident, sudden dismissal from work . . . When these things are absent, we are the ones who make mistakes and become overconfident in our own power. Let us keep in mind what Jesus Christ once said.
John 15:4-5 4 Remain in Me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in Me. 5 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in Me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing.
“Apart from Me you can do nothing.” These words resonate deeply into our hearts. Do we know that we are weak?
A little thorn stuck in the palm of our hand keeps us from focusing on things. One word from someone deprives us of sleep. We are people who cannot keep the promises we have made. Our minds and bodies are being undermined by worries that haven’t taken place.
Paul’s experience of his own weakness revealed the strength of God’s grace, and he wrote about this in 2 Corinthians 12:9-10.
2 Corinthians 12:9-10 9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
Standing before the Midianites, Gideon would have faced his own weakness, insult, hardship, persecution, and difficulty. But when he was weak, his God was strong. In other words, if he thought himself strong, he was really weak.
Don’t let the curse of “I must always be strong” be your goal in life, and don’t spend your irreplaceable life time on that! May you never regret your life by falling into the bottomless swamp of “more, more!” Keep in mind that sometimes we can lose our beloved companion or family members by being so attached to these things.
「May God show us the experience of “when I am weak, then I am strong” in our lives from now on! We are asked by God to build our own lives on this way of life.
People in the Lord, we can always change the course of our lives. It is possible, even from today. Why not live your remaining life together with Gideon’s God?
